Multiorbital systems away from global half-filling host intriguing physical properties promoted by Hund's coupling. Despite increasing awareness of this regime dubbed Hund's metal, effect of nonlocal interaction is still elusive. Here we study a three-orbital model with $1/3$ filling (two electrons per site) including the intersite Coulomb interaction ($V$). Using the $GW$ plus extended dynamical mean-field theory, the valence-skipping charge order transition is shown to be driven by $V$. Most interestingly, the instability to this transition is significantly enhanced in the spin-freezing crossover regime, thereby lowering the critical $V$ to the formation of charge order. This behavior is found to be closely related to the population profile of the atomic multiplet states in the spin-freezing regime. In this regime, maximum spin states are dominant in each total charge subspace with substantial amount of one- and three-electron occupations, which leads to almost equal population of one- and the maximum spin three-electron state. Our finding unveils another feature of the Hund's metal, and has potential implications for the broad range of multiorbital systems as well as the recently discovered charge order in iron-pnictides.
We show that repulsive local Coulomb interaction alone can drive valence-skipping charge disproportionation in the degenerate d-band, resulting in effective negative-U. This effect is shown to originate from anisotropic orbital-multipole scattering, and occurs only for $d^1$, $d^4$, $d^6$ and $d^9$ fillings (and their immediate surroundings). Explicit boundaries for valence-skipping are derived and the paramagnetic phase diagram for $d^4$ and $d^6$ is calculated. We also establish that the valence-skipping metal is very different, in terms of its local valence distribution, compared to the ato…
Several elements show valence skip fluctuation, for instance, Tl forms the compounds in valence states +1 and +3, and Bi forms in +3 and +5 states. This kind of fluctuation gives rise to a negative effective attractive interaction and the Kondo effect. In the compounds of valence skipping elements, the carrier doping will induce superconductivity with high critical temperature. For example, Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$BiO$_3$ shows high $T_c$ which is unlikely from the conventional electron-phonon mechanism. The reason for the missing of some valence states in such valence skip compounds remains a mystery.…
We present a computational study of PbCoO$_3$ at ambient and elevated pressure. We employ the static and dynamic treatment of local correlation in form of density functional theory + $U$ (DFT+$U$) and + dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT). Our results capture the experimentally observed crystal structures and identify the unsaturated Pb $6s$ - O $2p$ bonds as the driving force beyond the complex physics of PbCoO$_3$. We provide a geometrical analysis of the structural distortions and we discuss their implications, in particular, the internal doping, which triggers transition between phases …
Motivated by the colossal negative thermal expansion recently found in BiNiO$_3$, the valence transition accompanied by the charge transfer between the Bi and Ni sites is theoretically studied. We introduce an effective model for Bi-$6s$ and Ni-$3d$ orbitals with taking into account the valence skipping of Bi cations, and investigate the ground-state and finite-temperature phase diagrams within the mean-field approximation. We find that the valence transition is caused by commensurate locking of the electron filling in each orbital associated with charge and magnetic orderings, and the critica…
We consider the effects of doping the S = 1/2 kagome lattice with static impurities. We demonstrate that impurities lower the number of low-lying singlet states, induce dimer-dimer correlations of considerable spatial extent, and do not generate free spin degrees of freedom. Most importantly, they experience a highly unconventional mutual repulsion as a direct consequence of the strong spin frustration. These properties are illustrated by exact diagonalization, and reproduced to semi-quantitative accuracy within a dimer resonating-valence-bond description which affords access to longer length …
We report on the unconventional magnetism in the cubic B-site ordered double perovskite Ba2YMoO6, using AC and DC magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and muSR. No magnetic order is observed down to 2 K while the Weiss temperature is ~ -160 K. This is ascribed to the geometric frustration in the lattice of edge-sharing tetrahedra with orbitally degenerate Mo5+ s=1/2 spins. Our experimental results point to a gradual freezing of the spins into a disordered pattern of spin-singlets, quenching the orbital degeneracy while leaving the global cubic symmetry unaffected, and providing a rare exampl…
We investigate the behavior of the periodic Anderson model in the presence of $d$-$f$ Coulomb interaction ($U_{df}$) using mean-field theory, variational calculation, and exact diagonalization of finite chains. The variational approach based on the Gutzwiller trial wave function gives a critical value of $U_{df}$ and two quantum critical points (QCPs), where the valence susceptibility diverges. We derive the critical exponent for the valence susceptibility and investigate how the position of the QCP depends on the other parameters of the Hamiltonian. For larger values of $U_{df}$, the Kondo re…
We present our theoretical results on the electronic state in vanadium spinel oxide AlV$_2$O$_4$. The material is a mixed-valent system with the average valence V$^{2.5+}$, and V cations constitute a frustrated pyrochlore structure. It shows a structural transition at $\sim 700$ K, leading to the formation of seven V-sites clusters -- heptamers. We study the electronic state of the heptamer by explicitly taking account of orbital degree of freedom as well as electron correlations. We show that the ground state of the heptamer for realistic parameters becomes spin-singlet because of strong $σ$-…
We report on ground state phases of a doped one-dimensional Hubbard model, which for large onsite interactions is governed by the $t$-$J$ Hamiltonian, where the extant entanglement is immutable under perturbative or sudden changes of system parameters, a phenomenon termed as adiabatic freezing. We observe that in the metallic Luttinger liquid phase of the model bipartite entanglement decays polynomially and is adiabatically frozen, in contrast to the variable, exponential decay in the phase-separation and superconducting spin-gap phases. Significantly, at low fixed electron densities, the spin…
Using thermodynamic measurements, neutron diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance, and muon spin relaxation, we establish putative quantum spin-liquid behavior in Ba$_3$InIr$_2$O$_9$, where unpaired electrons are localized on mixed-valence Ir$_2$O$_9$ dimers with Ir$^{4.5+}$ ions. Despite the antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature on the order of 10 K, neither long-range magnetic order nor spin freezing are observed down to at least 20 mK, such that spins are short-range correlated and dynamic over nearly three decades in temperature. Quadratic power-law behavior of both the spin-lattice re…
Motivated by the recent discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates RE$_{1-δ}$Sr$_δ$NiO$_2$ (RE$=$Nd, Pr), we study the role of Hund's coupling $J$ in a quarter-filled two-orbital Hubbard model which has been on the periphery of the attention. A region of negative effective Coulomb interaction of this model is revealed to be differentiated from three- and five-orbital models in their typical Hund's metal active fillings. We identify distinctive regimes including four different correlated metals, one of which stems from the proximity to a Mott insulator while the other three, wh…
The presence of a quantum critical point separating two distinct zero-temperature phases is thought to underlie the `strange' metal state of many high-temperature superconductors. The nature of this quantum critical point, as well as a description of the resulting strange metal, are central open problems in condensed matter physics. In large part, the controversy stems from the lack of a clear broken symmetry to characterize the critical phase transition, and this challenge is no clearer than in the example of the unconventional superconductor CeCoIn$_5$. Through Hall effect and Fermi surface …
$B$-site ordered 4$d^1$ and 5$d^1$ double perovskites have a number of potential novel ground states including multipolar order, quantum spin liquids and valence bond glass states. These arise from the complex interactions of spin-orbital entangled $J_{eff}$ = 3/2 pseudospins on the geometrically frustrated fcc lattice. The 4$d^1$ Mo$^{5+}$ perovskite Ba$_2$YMoO$_6$ has been suggested to have a valence bond glass ground state. Here we report on the low temperature properties of powder samples of isostructural Ba$_2$LuMoO$_6$: the only other known cubic 4$d^1$ perovskite with one magnetic catio…
DC-magnetization data measured down to 40 mK speak against conventional freezing and reinstate YbMgGaO$_4$ as a triangular spin-liquid candidate. Magnetic susceptibility measured parallel and perpendicular to the $c$-axis reaches constant values below 0.1 and 0.2 K, respectively, thus indicating the presence of gapless low-energy spin excitations. We elucidate their nature in the triple-axis inelastic neutron scattering experiment that pinpoints the low-energy ($E$ $\leq$ $J_0$ $\sim$ 0.2 meV) part of the excitation continuum present at low temperatures ($T$ $<$ $J_0$/$k_B$), but \emph{complet…
We develop an extension of the Gutzwiller Approximation (GA) formalism that includes the effects of Coulomb interactions of arbitrary range (including density density, exchange, pair hopping and Coulomb assisted hopping terms). This formalism reduces to the ordinary GA formalism for the multi-band Hubbard models in the presence of only local interactions. This is accomplished by combining the 1/z expansion -- where z is the coordination number and only the leading order terms contribute in the limit of infinite dimensions -- with a P^2-I expansion, where P is the Gutzwiller projector. The meth…
We carried out AC magnetic susceptibility measurements and muon spin relaxation spectroscopy on the cubic double perovskite Ba2YMoO6, down to 50 mK. Below ~1 K the muon relaxation is typical of a magnetic insulator with a spin-liquid type ground state, i.e. without broken symmetries or frozen moments. However, the AC susceptibility revealed a dilute-spin-glass like transition below ~ 1 K. Antiferromagnetically coupled Mo5+ 4d1 electrons in triply degenerate t2g orbitals are in this material arranged in a geometrically frustrated fcc lattice. Bulk magnetic susceptibility data has previously bee…
We study the electronic structure, magnetic state, and phase stability of paramagnetic BiNiO$_3$ near a pressure-induced Mott insulator-to-metal transition (MIT) by employing a combination of density functional and dynamical mean-field theory. We obtain that BiNiO$_3$ exhibits an anomalous negative-charge-transfer insulating state, characterized by charge disproportionation of the Bi $6s$ states, with Ni$^{2+}$ ions. Upon a compression of the lattice volume by $\sim$4.8\%, BiNiO$_3$ is found to make a Mott MIT, accompanied by the change of crystal structure from triclinic $P\bar{1}$ to orthorh…
