We prove exponential stability theorems of Nekhoroshev type for motion in the neighbourhood of an elliptic fixed point in Hamiltonian systems having an additional transverse component of arbitrary dimension.
Revising Nekhoroshev's geometry of resonances, we provide a fully constructive and quantitative proof of Nekhoroshev's theorem for steep Hamiltonian systems proving, in particular, that the exponential stability exponent can be taken to be $1/ (2n α_1\cdotsα_{n-2}$) ($α_i$'s being Nekhoroshev's steepness indices and $n\ge 3$ the number of degrees of freedom).
Under ceratin conditions, generalized action-angle coordinates can be introduced near non-compact invariant manifolds of completely and partially integrable Hamiltonian systems.
We give a proof of a theorem by N.N. Nekhoroshev concerning Hamiltonian systems with $n$ degrees of freedom and $s$ integrals of motion in involution, where $1 \le s \le n$. Such a theorem ensures persistence of $s$-dimensional invariant tori under suitable nondegeneracy conditions generalizing Poincaré's condition on the Floquet multipliers.
We prove a $C^\infty$ version of the Nekhoroshev's estimate on the stability times of the actions in close to integrable Hamiltonian systems. The proof we give is a variant of the original Nekhoroshev's proof and it consists in first conjugating, globally in the phase space, and up to a small remainder, the system to a normal form. Then we perform the geometric part of the proof in the normalized variables. As a result, we obtain a proof which is simpler than the usual ones.
We give a detailed and mainly geometric proof of a theorem by N.N. Nekhoroshev for hamiltonian systems in $n$ degrees of freedom with $k$ constants of motion in involution, where $1 \le k \le n$. This states persistence of $k$-dimensional invariant tori, and local existence of partial action-angle coordinates, under suitable nondegeneracy conditions. Thus it admits as special cases the Poincaré-Lyapounov theorem (corresponding to $k=1$) and the Liouville-Arnold one (corresponding to $k = n$), and interpolates between them. The crucial tool for the proof is a generalization of the Poincaré map,…
A major result concerning perturbations of integrable Hamiltonian systems is given by Nekhoroshev estimates, which ensures exponential stability of all solutions provided the system is analytic and the integrable Hamiltonian not too degenerate. In the particular but important case where the latter is quasi-convex, these exponential estimates have been generalized by Marco and Sauzin if the Hamiltonian is Gevrey regular, using a method introduced by Lochak in the analytic case. In this paper, using the same approach we will investigate the situation where the Hamiltonian is assumed to be only f…
In this article, we present a new approach of Nekhoroshev theory for a generic unperturbed Hamiltonian which completely avoids small divisors problems. The proof is an extension of a method introduced by P. Lochak which combines averaging along periodic orbits with simultaneous Diophantine approximation and uses geometric arguments designed by the second author to handle generic integrable Hamiltonians. This method allows to deal with generic non-analytic Hamiltonians and to obtain new results of generic stability around linearly stable tori.
The aim of this paper is to extend the results of Giorgilli and Zehnder for aperiodic time dependent systems to a case of general nearly-integrable convex analytic Hamiltonians. The existence of a normal form and then a stability result are shown in the case of a slow aperiodic time dependence that, under some smallness conditions, is independent on the size of the perturbation.
In this paper we prove the first result of Nekhoroshev stability for steep Hamiltonians in Hölder class. Our new approach combines the classical theory of normal forms in analytic category with an improved smoothing procedure to approximate an Hölder Hamiltonian with an analytic one. It is only for the sake of clarity that we consider the (difficult) case of Hölder perturbations of an analytic integrable Hamiltonian, but our method is flexible enough to work in many other functional classes, including the Gevrey one. The stability exponents can be taken to be $(\ell-1)/(2n{\mathbfα}_1...{\math…
The periodic Toda lattice with $N$ sites is globally symplectomorphic to a two parameter family of $N-1$ coupled harmonic oscillators. The action variables fill out the whole positive quadrant of $\R^{N-1}$. We prove that in the interior of the positive quadrant as well as in a neighborhood of the origin, the Toda Hamiltonian is strictly convex and therefore Nekhoroshev's theorem applies on (almost) all parts of phase space.
We provide stability estimates, obtained by implementing the Nekhoroshev theorem, in reference to the orbital motion of a small body (satellite or space debris) around the Earth. We consider a Hamiltonian model, averaged over fast angles, including the $J_2$ geopotential term as well as third-body perturbations due to Sun and Moon. We discuss how to bring the Hamiltonian into a form suitable for the implementation of the Nekhoroshev theorem in the version given by Pöschel(1993) for the `non-resonant' regime. The manipulation of the Hamiltonian includes i) averaging over fast angles, ii) a suit…
In this paper, we consider a Diophantine quasi-periodic time-dependent analytic perturbation of a convex integrable Hamiltonian system, and we prove a result of stability of the action variables for an exponentially long interval of time. This extends known results for periodic time-dependent perturbations, and partly solves a long standing conjecture of Chirikov and Lochak. We also obtain improved stability estimates close to resonances or far away from resonances, and a more general result without any Diophantine condition.

In this paper, we investigate perturbations of linear integrable Hamiltonian systems, with the aim of establishing results in the spirit of the KAM theorem (preservation of invariant tori), the Nekhoroshev theorem (stability of the action variables for a finite but long interval of time) and Arnold diffusion (instability of the action variables). Whether the frequency of the integrable system is resonant or not, it is known that the KAM theorem does not hold true for all perturbations; when the frequency is resonant, it is the Nekhoroshev theorem which does not hold true for all perturbations.…
In the presence of noncompact symmetry, the stability of relative equilibria under momentum-preserving perturbations does not generally imply robust stability under momentum-changing perturbations. For axisymmetric relative equilibria of Hamiltonian systems with Euclidean symmetry, we investigate different mechanisms of stability: stability by energy-momentum confinement, KAM, and Nekhoroshev stability, and we explain the transitions between these. We apply our results to the Kirchhoff model for the motion of an axisymmetric underwater vehicle, and we numerically study dissipation induced inst…
We study the ellipticity and the ``Nekhoroshev stability'' (stability properties for finite, but very long, time scales) of the Riemann ellipsoids. We provide numerical evidence that the regions of ellipticity of the ellipsoids of types II and III are larger than those found by Chandrasekhar in the 60's and that all Riemann ellipsoids, except a finite number of codimension one subfamilies, are Nekhoroshev--stable. We base our analysis on a Hamiltonian formulation of the problem on a covering space, using recent results from Hamiltonian perturbation theory.
In this article, we consider solutions starting close to some linearly stable invariant tori in an analytic Hamiltonian system and we prove results of stability for a super-exponentially long interval of time, under generic conditions. The proof combines classical Birkhoff normal forms and a new method to obtain generic Nekhoroshev estimates developed by the author and L. Niederman in another paper. We will mainly focus on the neighbourhood of elliptic fixed points, the other cases being completely similar.
We show that, given a certain transversality condition, the set of relative equilibria $\mcl E$ near $p_e\in\mcl E$ of a Hamiltonian system with symmetry is locally Whitney-stratified by the conjugacy classes of the isotropy subgroups (under the product of the coadjoint and adjoint actions) of the momentum-generator pairs $(μ,ξ)$ of the relative equilibria. The dimension of the stratum of the conjugacy class (K) is $\dim G+2\dim Z(K)-\dim K$, where Z(K) is the center of K, and transverse to this stratum $\mcl E$ is locally diffeomorphic to the commuting pairs of the Lie algebra of $K/Z(K)$. Th…
We improve the global Nekhoroshev stability for analytic quasi-convex nearly integrable Hamiltonian systems. The new stability result is optimal, as it matches the fastest speed of Arnold diffusion.
We generalize to some PDEs a theorem by Nekhoroshev on the persistence of invariant tori in Hamiltonian systems with $r$ integrals of motion and $n$ degrees of freedom, $r\leq n$. The result we get ensures the persistence of an $r$-parameter family of $r$-dimensional invariant tori. The parameters belong to a Cantor-like set. The proof is based on the Lyapunof-Schmidt decomposition and on the standard implicit function theorem. Some of the persistent tori are resonant. We also give an application to the nonlinear wave equation with periodic boundary conditions on a segment and to a system of c…
For perturbations of integrable Hamiltonians systems, the Nekhoroshev theorem shows that all solutions are stable for an exponentially long interval of time, provided the integrable part satisfies a steepness condition and the system is analytic. This fundamental result has been extended in two distinct directions. The first one is due to Niederman, who showed that under the analyticity assumption, the result holds true for a prevalent class of integrable systems which is much wider than the steep systems. The second one is due to Marco-Sauzin but it is limited to quasi-convex integrable syste…

We consider linearly stable elliptic fixed points for a symplectic vector field and prove generic results of super-exponential stability for nearby solutions. Morbidelli and Giorgilli have proved a theorem of stability over super-exponentially long times if one consider an analytic lagrangian torus, invariant for an analytic hamiltonian system, with a diophantine translation vector which admit a sign definite torsion. Then, the solutions of the system move very little over times which are super-exponentially long with respect to the inverse of the distance to the invariant torus. The proof is …
Normal form stability estimates are a basic tool of Celestial Mechanics for characterizing the long-term stability of the orbits of natural and artificial bodies. Using high-order normal form constructions, we provide three different estimates for the orbital stability of point-mass satellites orbiting around the Earth. i) We demonstrate the long term stability of the semimajor axis within the framework of the $J_2$ problem, by a normal form construction eliminating the fast angle in the corresponding Hamiltonian and obtaining $H_{J_2}$ . ii) We demonstrate the stability of the eccentricity an…
A longstanding belief has been that the semimajor axes, in the Newtonian planetary problem, are stable. In the course of the XIX century, Laplace, Lagrange and others gave stronger and stronger arguments in this direction, thus culminating in what has commonly been referred to as the first Laplace-Lagrange stability theorem. In the problem with 3 planets, we prove the existence of orbits along which the semimajor axis of the outer planet undergoes large random variations thus disproving the theorem of Laplace-Lagrange. The time of instability varies as a negative power of the masses of the pla…
We prove the transversality result necessary for defining local Morse chain complexes with finite cyclic group symmetry. Our arguments use special regularized distance functions constructed using classical covering lemmas, and an inductive perturbation process indexed by the strata of the isotropy set. A global existence theorem for symmetric Morse-Smale pairs is also proved. Regarding applications, we focus on Hamiltonian dynamics and rigorously establish a local contact homology package based on discrete action functionals. We prove a persistence theorem, analogous to the classical shifting …
We consider a ground state (soliton) of a Hamiltonian PDE. We prove that if the soliton is orbitally stable, then it is also asymptotically stable. The main assumptions are transversal nondegeneracy of the manifold of the ground states, linear dispersion (in the form of Strichartz estimates) and nonlinear Fermi Golden Rule. We allow the linearization of the equation at the soliton to have an arbitrary number of eigenvalues. The theory is tailor made for the application to the translational invariant NLS in space dimension 3. The proof is based on the extension of some tools of the theory of Ha…
Some scales of spaces of ultra-differentiable functions are introduced, having good stability properties with respect to infinitely many derivatives and compositions. They are well-suited for solving non-linear functional equations by means of hard implicit function theorems. They comprise Gevrey functions and thus, as a limiting case, analytic functions. Using majorizing series, we manage to characterize them in terms of a real sequence M bounding the growth of derivatives. In this functional setting, we prove two fundamental results of Hamiltonian perturbation theory: the invariant torus the…
We show that an analytic invariant torus $\cT_0$ with Diophantine frequency $ø_0$ is never isolated due to the following alternative. If the Birkhoff normal form of the Hamiltonian at $\cT_0$ satisfies a Rüssmann transversality condition, the torus $\cT_0$ is accumulated by KAM tori of positive total measure. If the Birkhoff normal form is degenerate, there exists a subvariety of dimension at least $d+1$ that is foliated by analytic invariant tori with frequency $ø_0$. For frequency vectors $ø_0$ having a finite uniform Diophantine exponent (this includes a residual set of Liouville vectors), …
