We study metric-compatible Poisson structures in the semi-classical limit of noncommutative emergent gravity. Space-time is realized as quantized symplectic submanifold embedded in R^D, whose effective metric depends on the embedding as well as on the Poisson structure. We study solutions of the equations of motion for the Poisson structure, focusing on a natural class of solutions such that the effective metric coincides with the embedding metric. This leads to i-(anti-) self-dual complexified Poisson structures in four space-time dimensions with Lorentzian signature. Solutions on manifolds with conformally flat metric are obtained and tools are developed which allow to systematically re-derive previous results, e.g. for the Schwarzschild metric. It turns out that the effective gauge coupling is related to the symplectic volume density, and may vary significantly over space-time. To avoid this problem, we consider in a second part space-time manifolds with compactified extra dimensions and split noncommutativity, where solutions with constant gauge coupling are obtained for several physically relevant geometries.
We investigate a relation of the contravariant geometry to the emergent gravity from noncommutative gauge theories. We give a refined formulation of the contravariant gravity and provide solutions to the contravariant Einstein equation. We linearize the equation around background solutions, including curved ones. A noncommutative gauge theory on the Moyal plane can be rewritten as an ordinary gauge theory on a curved background via the Seiberg-Witten map, which is known as the emergent gravity. We show that this phenomenon also occurs for a gauge theory on a noncommutative homogeneous Kähler b…
With the bare essentials of noncommutative geometry (defined by a spectral triple), we first describe how it naturally gives rise to gauge theories. Then, we quickly review the notion of twisting (in particular, minimally) noncommutative geometries and how it induces a Wick rotation, that is, a transition of the metric signature from euclidean to Lorentzian. We focus on comparatively more tractable examples of spectral triples; such as the ones corresponding to a closed Riemannian spin manifold, $U(1)$ gauge theory, and electrodynamics. By minimally twisting these examples and computing their …
We present an analytic proof of the existence of phase transition in the large $N$ limit of certain random noncommutaitve geometries. These geometries can be expressed as ensembles of Dirac operators. When they reduce to single matrix ensembles, one can apply the Coulomb gas method to find the empirical spectral distribution. We elaborate on the nature of the large $N$ spectral distribution of the Dirac operator itself. Furthermore, we show that these models exhibit both a single and double cut region for certain values of the order parameter and find the exact value where the transition occur…
Noncommutative geometries generalize standard smooth geometries, parametrizing the noncommutativity of dimensions with a fundamental quantity with the dimensions of area. The question arises then of whether the concept of a region smaller than the scale - and ultimately the concept of a point - makes sense in such a theory. We argue that it does not, in two interrelated ways. In the context of Connes' spectral triple approach, we show that arbitrarily small regions are not definable in the formal sense. While in the scalar field Moyal-Weyl approach, we show that they cannot be given an operati…
We use genus zero free energy functions of Hermitian matrix models to define spectral curves and their special deformations. They are special plane curves defined by formal power series with integral coefficients generalizing the Catalan numbers. This is done in two different versions, depending on two different genus expansions, and these two versions are in some sense dual to each other.
A fuzzy geometry is a certain type of spectral triple whose Dirac operator crucially turns out to be a finite matrix. This notion was introduced in [J. Barrett, J. Math. Phys. 56, 082301 (2015)] and accommodates familiar fuzzy spaces like spheres and tori. In the framework of random noncommutative geometry, we use Barrett's characterization of Dirac operators of fuzzy geometries in order to systematically compute the spectral action $S(D)= \mathrm{Tr} f(D)$ for $2n$-dimensional fuzzy geometries. In contrast to the original Chamseddine-Connes spectral action, we take a polynomial $f$ with $f(x)…
Given a six-dimensional symplectic manifold $(M, B)$, a nondegenerate, co-closed four-form $C$ introduces a dual symplectic structure $\widetilde{B} = *C $ independent of $B$ via the Hodge duality $*$. We show that the doubling of symplectic structures due to the Hodge duality results in two independent classes of noncommutative U(1) gauge fields by considering the Seiberg-Witten map for each symplectic structure. As a result, emergent gravity suggests a beautiful picture that the variety of six-dimensional manifolds emergent from noncommutative U(1) gauge fields is doubled. In particular, the…
We emphasize that noncommutative (NC) spacetime necessarily implies emergent spacetime if spacetime at microscopic scales should be viewed as NC. In order to understand NC spacetime correctly, we need to deactivate the thought patterns that we have installed in our brains and taken for granted for so many years. Emergent spacetime allows a background-independent formulation of quantum gravity that will open a new perspective to resolve the notorious problems in theoretical physics such as the cosmological constant problem, hierarchy problem, dark energy, dark matter, and cosmic inflation.
It is known that connected translation invariant $n$-dimensional noncommutative differentials $d x^i$ on the algebra $k[x^1,\cdots,x^n]$ of polynomials in $n$-variables over a field $k$ are classified by commutative algebras $V$ on the vector space spanned by the coordinates. This data also applies to construct differentials on the Heisenberg algebra `spacetime' with relations $[x^μ,x^ν]=λΘ^{μν}$ where $ Θ$ is an antisymmetric matrix as well as to Lie algebras with pre-Lie algebra structures. We specialise the general theory to the field $k={\ \mathbb{F}}_2$ of two elements, in which case tran…
This is a review of explicit computations of Connes distance in noncommutative geometry, covering finite dimensional spectral triples, almost-commutative geometries, and spectral triples on the algebra of compact operators. Several applications to physics are covered, like the metric interpretation of the Higgs field, and the comparison of Connes distance with the minimal length that emerges in various models of quantum spacetime. Links with other areas of mathematics are studied, in particular the horizontal distance in sub-Riemannian geometry. The interpretation of Connes distance as a nonco…
We analyze the leading terms of the spectral action for a model of noncommutative geometry, which is a product of $4$-dimensional Riemannian manifold with a two-point space exploring the previously neglected case when the metrics over each sheet are different. Assuming the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker type of the metric for both sheets we obtain the action, which in addition to the the usual cosmological constant terms and the Einstein-Hilbert term involves a nonlinear interaction term. We study qualitative picture of potential consequences of such term in the basic cosmological models.
