Neutron and x-ray scattering experiments have provided mounting evidence for spin and charge ordering phenomena in underdoped cuprates. These range from early work on stripe correlations in Nd-LSCO to the latest discovery of charge-density-waves in YBCO. Both phenomena are characterized by a pronounced dependence on doping, temperature, and an externally applied magnetic field. Here we show that these electron-lattice instabilities exhibit also a previously unrecognized bulk-surface dichotomy. Surface-sensitive electronic and structural probes uncover a temperature-dependent evolution of the CuO2 plane band dispersion and apparent Fermi pockets in underdoped Bi2201, which is directly associated with an hitherto-undetected strong temperature dependence of the incommensurate superstructure periodicity below 130K. In stark contrast, the structural modulation revealed by bulk-sensitive probes is temperature independent. These findings point to a surface-enhanced incipient charge-density-wave instability, driven by Fermi surface nesting. This discovery is of critical importance in the interpretation of single-particle spectroscopy data and establishes the surface of cuprates and other complex oxides as a rich playground for the study of electronically soft phases.
The Josephson coupling between optimally cuprate superconductors separated by a spacer with a finite energy cooperon excitation which contributes to the Josephson coupling strength, is examined. For an underdoped cuprate barrier in its normal state, the YRZ model gives a good description of the temperature dependent enhanced Josephson coupling. A detailed examination of origin of the enhancement shows a significant contribution from the cooperon excitation which is comparable to that from nodal quasiparticles.
Fermi surface models applied to the underdoped cuprates predict the small pocket area to be strongly dependent on doping whereas quantum oscillations in YBa2Cu3O6+x find precisely the opposite to be true; seemingly at odds with the Luttinger volume. We show that such behavior can be explained by an incommensurate antinodal Fermi surface nesting-type instability; further explaining the doping-dependent superstructures seen in cuprates using scanning tunneling microscopy. We develop a Fermi surface reconstruction scheme involving orthogonal density waves in two-dimensions and show that their inc…
Metals interacting via short-range antiferromagnetic fluctuations are unstable to sign-changing superconductivity at low temperatures. For the cuprates, this leading instability leads to the well known $d-$wave superconducting state. However, there is also a secondary instability to an incommensurate charge density wave, with a predominantly $d-$wave form factor, arising from the same antiferromagnetic fluctuations. Recent experiments in the pseudogap regime of the hole-doped cuprates have found strong evidence for such a charge density wave order and, in particular, the predicted $d-$wave for…
We present a neutron-scattering study of the static and dynamic spin correlations in the underdoped high-temperature superconductor YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6.45) in magnetic fields up to 15 T. The field strongly enhances static incommensurate magnetic order at low temperatures and induces a spectral-weight shift in the magnetic-excitation spectrum. A reconstruction of the Fermi surface driven by the field-enhanced magnetic superstructure may thus be responsible for the unusual Fermi surface topology revealed by recent quantum-oscillation experiments.
Using neutron scattering, we investigate the effect of a magnetic field on the static and dynamic spin response in heavily underdoped superconducting YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+x}$ (YBCO$_{6+x}$) with x=0.33 (T$_{c}$=8 K) and 0.35 (T$_{c}$=18 K). In contrast to the heavily doped and superconducting monolayer cuprates, the elastic central peak characterizing static spin correlations does not respond observably to a magnetic field which suppresses superconductivity. Instead, we find a magnetic field induced resonant enhancement of the spin fluctuations. The energy scale of the enhanced fluctuations …
We argue that the pseudogap phase may be an attribute of the non-BCS pairing of quantum-critical, diffusive fermions near the antiferromagnetic quantum critical point. We derive and solve a set of three coupled Eliashberg-type equations for spin-mediated pairing and show that in some $T$ range below the pairing instability, there is no feedback from superconductivity on fermionic excitations, and fermions remain diffusive despite of the pairing. We conject that in this regime, fluctuations of the pairing gap destroy the superconducting condensate but preserve the leading edge gap in the fermio…
The electronic properties of multilayers of strongly correlated models for cuprate superconductors are investigated using cluster dynamical mean-field techniques. We focus on combinations of underdoped and overdoped layers and find that the superconducting order parameter in the overdoped layers is enhanced by the proximity effect of the strong pairing scale originating from the underdoped layers. The enhanced order parameter can even exceed the maximum value in uniform systems. This behavior is well reproduced in slave-boson mean-field calculations which also find higher transition temperatur…
We present a comparative study of Nernst effect and resistivity in underdoped samples of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$ and La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$. The Nernst effect presents a peak in a region of the H-T diagram where resistivity shows a non-metallic temperature dependence. Our results illustrate that the mechanism of dissipation in the mixed state of underdoped cuprates is poorly understood. Large quantum superconducting fluctuations and vanishing vortex viscosity are among suggested explanations for an enhanced Nernst signal close to the superconductor-insulator boundary.
We develop a theory for light-induced superconductivity in underdoped cuprates in which the competing bond-density wave order is suppressed by driving phonons with light. Close to a bond-density wave instability in a system with a small Fermi surface, such as a fractionalized Fermi liquid, we show that the coupling of electrons to phonons is strongly enhanced at the bond-density wave ordering wavevectors, leading to a strong softening of phonons at these wavevectors. For a model of classical phonons with anharmonic couplings, we show that the combination of strong softening and driving can lea…
We study 2+1 dimensional massless Dirac fermions and bosons coupled to a U(1) gauge field as a model for underdoped cuprates. We find that the uniform susceptibility and the specific heat coefficient are logarithmically enhanced (compared to linear-in-T behavior) due to the fluctuation of transverse gauge field which is the only massless mode at finite boson density. We analyze existing data, and find good agreement in the spin gap phase. Within our picture, the drop of the susceptibility below the superconducting T_c arises from the suppression of gauge fluctuations.
Measurements of thermal conductivity versus temperature over a broad range of doping in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ and HgBa$_2$Ca$_{n-1}$Cu$_n$O$_{2n+2+δ}$ ($n$=1,2,3) suggest that small domains of localized holes develop for hole concentrations near $p$=1/8. The data imply a mechanism for localization that is intrinsic to the CuO$_2$-planes and is enhanced via pinning associated with oxygen-vacancy clusters.
The superconducting transition temperature, Tc, of bilayers comprising underdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 films capped by a thin heavily overdoped metallic La1.65Sr0.35CuO4 layer, is found to increase with respect to Tc of the bare underdoped films. The highest Tc is achieved for x = 0.12, close to the 'anomalous' 1/8 doping level, and exceeds that of the optimally-doped bare film. Our data suggest that the enhanced superconductivity is confined to the interface between the layers. We attribute the effect to a combination of the high pairing scale in the underdoped layer with an enhanced phase stiffness …
The Fermi surface in underdoped cuprates is reconstructed by the charge density wave (CDW) order in the pseudogap phase. Theoretical proposals can be divided into two classes: one assumes the underlying Fermi surface without CDW as a conventional large surface; the other assumes small hole-like Fermi pockets. In both scenarios, we theoretically study the quantum oscillation and find three evenly spaced peaks in the oscillation spectra. The central dominant peak is induced by the CDW order. Its effective mass is strongly enhanced as the CDW vanishes in agreement with experiments. But the two sc…
Recent experimental and theoretical studies have highlighted the possible role of a electronic nematic liquid in underdoped cuprate superconductors. We calculate, within a model of d-wave superconductor with Hubbard correlations, the spin susceptibility in the case of a small explicitly broken rotational symmetry of the underlying lattice. We then exhibit how the induced spin response asymmetry is strongly enhanced by correlations as one approaches the instability to stripe order. In the disorder-induced stripe phase, impurities become spin nematogens with a C_2 symmetric impurity resonance st…
We study the static charge correlation function in an one-band model on a square lattice. The Hamiltonian consist of effective hoppings of the electrons between the lattice sites and the Heisenberg Hamiltonian. Approximating the irreducible charge correlation function by a single bubble yields the ladder approximation for the charge correlation function. In this approximation one finds in general three charge instabilities, two of them are due to nesting, the third one is the flux phase instability. Since these instabilities cannot explain the experiments in hole-doped cuprates we have include…
Recent inelastic neutron scattering measurements found that the spin susceptibility of detwinned and highly ordered ortho-II YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.5} exhibits, in both the normal and superconducting states, one-dimensional incommensurate modulations at low energies which were interpreted as a signature of dynamic stripes. We propose an alternative model based on quasiparticle transitions between the arcs of a truncated Fermi surface. Such transitions are resonantly enhanced by scattering to the triplet spin resonance. We show that the anisotropy in the experimental spin response is consistent with thi…
The underdoped cuprates have a number of interesting and unusual properties that often seem hard to reconcile with one another. In this paper we show how many of these diverse phenomena can be synthesized into a single coherent theoretical picture. Specifically we present a description where a pseudogap and gapless Fermi arcs exist in the normal state above the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$), but give way to the observed quantum oscillations and other phenomena at low temperature when the superconductivity is suppressed by a magnetic field. We show the consistency between these…
The minimal theory of spin of gapless quasiparticles coupled to fluctuating vortex defects in the phase of the d-wave superconducting order parameter at T=0 is studied. With the proliferation of the vortex loops the theory reduces to the previuosly studied QED3, with its concomitant spin-density-wave (chiral) instability. We find a single superconductor-insulator phase transition, which may be fluctuation induced first-order, at which vortices condense and the chiral symmetry for fermions dynamically breaks. We compute the spin-spin correlation function deep in the fluctuating superconducting …
We studied Zn-substitution effect on the high-T_c superconductors, underdoped La_{2-x}Sr_xCu_{1-y}Zn_yO_4 (x=0.10; y=0, 0.01, 0.02), optimally doped (x=0.15; y=0, 0.02), and overdoped (x=0.20; y=0, 0.03, 0.06) in a temperature range of T=4.2-300 K, using Cu nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spin-echo technique. We found full disappearance of the Cu NQR signals for the Zn-substituted, Sr-underdoped x=0.10 samples below about 40 K, partial disappearance for the Sr-optimally doped ones below about 50 K, but not for the overdoped x=0.20 ones. From the Zn-doping, the Sr-doping and the temperature …
The extended $t-J$ model is theoretically studied, in the context of hole underdoped cuprates. Based on results obtained by recent numerical studies, we identify the mean field state having both the antiferromagnetic and staggered flux resonating valence bond orders. The random-phase approximation is employed to analyze all the possible collective modes in this mean field state. In the static (Bardeen Cooper Schrieffer) limit justified in the weak coupling regime, we obtain the effective superconducting interaction between the doped holes at the small pockets located around $\bm{k}= (\pm π/2, …
We report magnetic force microscopy (MFM) measurements on underdoped $BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2$ ($x=0.26$) that show enhanced superconductivity along stripes parallel to twin boundaries. These stripes of enhanced diamagnetic response repel vortices when we cool in a finite magnetic field and act as barriers when we drag vortices with the magnetic MFM tip. The stripes disappear when we warm the sample towards the superconducting transition temperature. We show that stripes can move when we warm the sample and comment on the relationship between the stripes and similar stripes observed previously i…
We present a numerical study of the isotope effect on the angle resolved photoemission spectra (ARPES) in the undoped cuprates. By the systematic-error-free Diagrammatic Monte Carlo method, the Lehman spectral function of a single hole in the tt't''-J model in the regime of intermediate and strong couplings to optical phonons is calculated for normal and isotope substituted systems. We found that the isotope effect is strongly energy-momentum dependent, and is anomalously enhanced in the intermediate coupling regime while it approaches to that of the localized hole model in the strong coupling…
To investigate the origin of the enhanced Tc ({\approx} 110 K) of the trilayer cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ (Bi-2223), its underdoped single crystals are a critical requirement. Here, we demonstrate the first successful in-plane resistivity measurements of heavily underdoped Bi-2223 (zero-resistivity temperatures {\approx} 20~35 K). Detailed crystal growth methods, the annealing process, as well as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and magnetic susceptibility measurement results are also reported.
A major obstacle in understanding the mechanism of Cooper pairing in the cuprates is the existence of various intertwined orders associated with spin, charge, and Cooper pairs. Of particular importance is the ubiquitous charge order features that have been observed in a variety of cuprates, especially in the underdoped regime of the phase diagram. To explain the origin of the charge order and its implication to the superconducting phase, many theoretical models have been proposed, such as charge stripes, electronic nematicity, and Fermi surface instability. A highly appealing physical picture …

We consider the effective 2+1 dimensional electrodynamics (QED_3) of low-energy quasiparticles coupled to fluctuating vortex loops in the d-wave superconductor, with the velocity anisotropy: v_F not equal to v_Delta. This theory should be relevant to the quantum superconductor-insulator transition in underdoped cuprates. Working in the customary large-N approximation, we find that weak anisotropy is a marginally irrelevant perturbation to the Lorentz invariant QED_3, and that the critical number N_c of Dirac fields below which the theory suffers the antiferromagnetic (chiral) instability stays…
We present evidence for the existence of a spontaneous instability towards an orbital loop-current phase in a multiorbital Hubbard model for the CuO$_2$ planes in cuprates. Contrary to the previously proposed $θ_{II}$ phase with intra-unit cell currents, the identified instability is towards a staggered pattern of intertwined current loops. The orbitally resolved current pattern thereby shares its staggered character with the proposal of d-density wave order. The current pattern will cause a Fermi surface reconstruction and the opening of a pseudogap. We argue that the pseudogap phase with tim…
Motivated by recent transport and neutron scattering experiments suggesting an orientational symmetry breaking in underdoped cuprates we present a theoretical study of Raman scattering near a d-wave Pomeranchuk instability (PI). The d-wave component of Raman scattering from electrons and phonons allows to study directly order parameter fluctuations associated with the PI. Approaching the PI from the normal state by lowering the temperature a central peak emerges both in electronic and, as an additional low-frequency feature, in phononic scattering. Approaching the PI in the superconducting sta…
The pseudogap phase of high-$T_c$ cuprates is controversially attributed to preformed pairs or to a phase which coexists and competes with superconductivity. One of the challenges is to develop theoretical and experimental studies in order to distinguish between both proposals. Very recently, researchers at Stanford have reported [M. Hashimoto {\it et al.}, Nat. Phys. {\bf 6}, 414 (2010); R.-H. He {\it et al.}, Science {\bf 331}, 1579 (2011)] angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments on Pb-Bi2201 supporting the point of view that the pseudogap is distinct from superconductivity and…
The role of antiferromagnetic spin correlations in high-temperature superconductors remains a matter of debate. We present inelastic neutron scattering evidence that gapless spin fluctuations coexist with superconductivity in La$_{1.905}$Ba$_{0.095}$CuO$_4$. Furthermore, we observe that both the low-energy magnetic spectral weight and the spin incommensurability are enhanced by the onset of superconducting correlations. We propose that the coexistence occurs through intertwining of spatial modulations of the pair wave function and the antiferromagnetic correlations. This proposal is also direc…
We consider the magnetic properties of high Tc cuprates from a gauge theory point of view, with emphasis on the underdoped regime. Underdoped cuprates possess certain antiferromagnetic correlations, as evidenced, for example, by different temperature dependence of the Cu and O site NMR relaxation rates, that are not captured well by slave boson mean field theories of the t-J model. We show that the inclusion of gauge fluctuations will remedy the deficiencies of the mean field theories. As a concrete illustration of the gauge-fluctuation restoration of the antiferromangetic correlation and the …
The understanding of the origin of superconductivity in cuprates has been hindered by the apparent diversity of intertwining electronic orders in these materials. We combined resonant x-ray scattering (REXS), scanning-tunneling microscopy (STM), and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to observe a charge order that appears consistently in surface and bulk, and in momentum and real space within one cuprate family, Bi2201. The observed wave vectors rule out simple antinodal nesting in the single-particle limit but match well with a phenomenological model of a many-body instability …
The cuprates exhibit a prominent charge-density-wave (CDW) instability with wavevector along [100], i.e., the Cu-O bond direction. Whereas CDW order is most prominent at moderate doping and low temperature, there exists increasing evidence for dynamic charge correlations throughout a large portion of the temperature-doping phase diagram. In particular, signatures of incipient charge order have been observed as phonon softening and/or broadening near the CDW wavevector approximately half-way through the Brillouin zone. Most of this work has focused on moderately-doped cuprates, for which the CD…
The evolution of low-energy spin dynamics in the iron-based superconductor LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ was studied over a broad doping, temperature, and magnetic field range (x = 0 - 0.15, T up to 480K, H up to 30T) by means of As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). An enhanced spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature, 1/T1T, in underdoped superconducting samples (x = 0.045, 0.05 and 0.075) suggests the presence of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, which are strongly reduced in optimally-doped (x = 0.10) and completely absent in overdoped (x = 0.15) samples. In contrast to previous analys…
Recent ARPES experiments show a narrow quasiparticle peak at the gap edge along the antinodal [1,0]-direction for the overdoped cuprate superconductors. We show that within weak coupling BCS theory for a d-wave superconductor the s-wave single-impurity scattering cross section vanishes for energies of the gap edge. This coherence effect occurs through multiple scattering off the impurity. For small impurity concentrations the spectral function has a pronounced increase of the (scattering) lifetime for antinodal quasiparticles but shows a very broad peak in the nodal direction, in qualitative a…
We report quantum oscillations in the underdoped high Tc YBCO over a wide range in magnetic field 28<B<85 T corresponding to ~12 oscillations, enabling the Fermi surface topology to be mapped to high resolution. As earlier reported by Sebastian et al., we find a Fermi surface comprising multiple pockets, as revealed by the additional distinct quantum oscillation frequencies and harmonics reported in this work. We find the originally reported broad low frequency Fourier peak at 535 T to be clearly resolved into three separate peaks at 460 T, 532 T and 602 T. Our increased resolution and angle-r…
Recent Scanning Tunneling Spectra(STS) measurement on underdoped cuprate discovers the increase of the maximum superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ when the size of charge transfer gap (CTG) is reduced. Applying pressure is another well known method to increase maximum $T_c$. However, these pressure experiments also found another puzzle that $T_c$ is enhanced in underdoped and optimal doped samples but suppressed in overdoped. Here we present a possible mechanism based on the charge fluctuation to explain both these two effects simultaneously. Starting from 3-band Hubbard model, we ret…
The t-J model is a paradigmatic model for the study of strongly correlated electron systems. In particular, it has been argued that it is an appropriate model to describe the cuprate high-Tc superconductors. It turns out that a comprehensive understanding of the gamut of physics encoded by the t-J model is still an open problem. In recent years some remarkable experiments on the cuprates, for example, discovery of nodeless superconductivity in underdoped samples (PNAS 109, 18332 (2012)), discovery of s-wave like gap in the pseudogap phase (Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 107001 (2013)), and observation …
Superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) microscopy shows stripes of increased diamagnetic susceptibility in underdoped, but not overdoped, single crystals of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. These stripes of increased diamagnetic susceptibility are consistent with enhanced superfluid density on twin boundaries. Individual vortices avoid pinning on or crossing the stripes, and prefer to travel parallel to them. These results indicate a relationship between superfluid density, local strain, and frustrated magnetism, and demonstrate two mechanisms for enhancing critical currents.
We present a coherent scenario for the physics of cuprate superconductors, which is based on a charge-driven inhomogeneity, i.e. the ``stripe phase''. We show that spin and charge critical fluctuations near the stripe instability of strongly correlated electron systems provide an effective interaction between the quasiparticles, which is strongly momentum, frequency, temperature and doping dependent. This accounts for the various phenomena occurring in the overdoped, optimally and underdoped regimes both for the normal and the superconductive phase.
Motivated by the widespread experimental observations of nematicity in strongly underdoped cuprate superconductors, we investigate the possibility of enhanced nematic fluctuations in the vicinity of a Mott insulator that displays Néel-type antiferromagnetic order. By performing a strong-coupling expansion of an effective model that contains both Cu-$d$ and O-$p$ orbitals on the square lattice, we demonstrate that quadrupolar fluctuations in the $p$-orbitals inevitably generate a biquadratic coupling between the spins of the $d$-orbitals. The key point revealed by our classical Monte Carlo simu…
The application of large magnetic fields ($B \sim B_{c2}$) to layered cuprates suppresses their high temperature superconducting behaviour and reveals competing ground states. In the widely-studied material YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ (YBCO), underdoped ($p \sim 1/8$) samples show signatures of field-induced electronic and structural changes at low temperatures. However, the microscopic nature of the field-induced reconstruction and the high-field state are unclear. Here we report an x-ray study of the high-field charge density wave (CDW) in YBCO, for doping, $0.1 \lesssim p \lesssim 0.13$. For $p …
In underdoped cuprate superconductors, a rich competition occurs between superconductivity and charge density wave (CDW) order. Whether rotational symmetry breaking (nematicity) occurs intrinsically and generically or as a consequence of other orders is under debate. Here we employ resonant x-ray scattering in stripe-ordered (La,M)_2CuO_4 to probe the relationship between electronic nematicity of the Cu 3d orbitals, structure of the (La,M)_2O_2 layers, and CDW order. We find distinct temperature dependences for the structure of the (La,M)_2O_2 layers and the electronic nematicity of the CuO_2 …
We have investigated the optimally doped tri-layer cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$ (Bi2223) by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and observed energy bands and Fermi surfaces originated from the outer and inner CuO$_2$ planes (OP and IP) separately. The OP band is overdoped (hole density $\sim$ 0.26/Cu) with a large d-wave gap of $Δ_0$ $\sim$ 43 meV while the IP is underdoped ($\sim$ 0.06/Cu) with an even large gap of $Δ_0$ $\sim$ 60 meV. We propose that the enhancement of the $Δ_0$ of IP is due to the minimal influence of out-of-plane disorder and that the OP gap is then en…
Here, we present a de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect1 study on the newly discovered LaFeAsO1-xFx compounds2,3 in order to unveil the topography of the Fermi surface associated with their antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases, which is essential for understanding their magnetism, pairing symmetry and superconducting mechanism. Calculations 4 and surface-sensitive measurements 5,6,7 provided early guidance, but lead to contradictory results, generating a need for a direct experimental probe of their bulk Fermi surface. In antiferromagnetic LaFeAsO1-xFx 8,9 we observe a complex pattern in t…
The intrinsic instability of underdoped copper oxides towards inhomogeneous states is one of the central puzzles of the physics of correlated materials. The influence of the Mott physics on the doping-temperature phase diagram of copper oxides represents a major issue that is subject of intense theoretical and experimental effort. Here, we investigate the ultrafast electron dynamics in prototypical single-layer Bi-based cuprates at the energy scale of the O-2p$\rightarrow$Cu-3d charge-transfer (CT) process. We demonstrate a clear evolution of the CT excitations from incoherent and localized, a…
Within the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism, the interplay between the single particle coherence and superconducting instability in doped cuprates is studied. The superconducting transition temperature increases with increasing doping in the underdoped regime, and reaches a maximum in the optimal doping, then decreases in the overdoped regime, however, the values of this superconducting transition temperature in the whole superconducting range are suppressed to low temperature due to the single particle coherence. Within this superconducting mechanism, we calculate the dynamical…
Strong evidence for charge-density correlation in the underdoped phase of the cuprate YBa2Cu3Oy was obtained by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and resonant x-ray scatter- ing. The fluctuations were found to be enhanced in strong magnetic fields. Recently, 3D (three dimensional) charge-density wave (CDW) formation with long-range order (LRO) was observed by x-ray diffraction in H >15 T. To elucidate how the CDW transition impacts the pair condensate, we have used torque magnetization to 45 T and thermal conductivity $κ_{xx}$ to construct the magnetic phase diagram in untwinned crystals with h…
The pseudogap regime of the cuprate high-temperature superconductors is characterized by a variety of competing orders, the nature of which are still widely debated. Recent experiments have provided evidence for electron nematic order, in which the electron fluid breaks rotational symmetry while preserving translational invariance. Raman spectroscopy, with its ability to symmetry resolve low energy excitations, is a unique tool that can be used to assess nematic fluctuations and nematic ordering tendencies. Here, we compare results from determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the Hubbar…
To elucidate how the temperature dependence of the resistivity anisotropy of the cuprate superconductors changes with hole doping, both the in-plane and the out-of-plane resistivities (ρ_{ab} and ρ_{c}) are measured in a series of high-quality Bi_{2}Sr_{2-x}La_{x}CuO_{6+δ} (BSLCO) single crystals for a wide range of x (x = 0.23 - 1.02), which corresponds to the hole doping per Cu, p, of 0.03 - 0.18. The anisotropy ratio, ρ_{c}/ρ_{ab}, shows a systematic increase with decreasing p at moderate temperatures, except for the most underdoped composition where the localization effect enhances ρ_{ab} …
Experiments on underdoped cuprate superconductors suggest an intricate relation between the normal-state Nernst effect and stripe order: The Nernst signal appears enhanced near 1/8 hole doping and its onset temperature scales with the stripe-ordering temperature over some range of doping. Here, we employ a phenomenological quasiparticle model to calculate the normal state Nernst signal in the presence of stripe order. We find that Fermi pockets caused by translational symmetry breaking lead to a strongly enhanced Nernst signal with a sign depending on the modulation period of the ordered state…
We propose a theory for the underdoped hole-doped cuprates, focusing on the "nodal-anti-nodal dichotomy" observed in recent experiments. Our theory begins with an ordered antiferromagnetic Fermi liquid with electron and hole pockets. We argue that it is useful to consider a quantum transition at which the loss of antiferromagnetic order leads to a hypothetical metallic "algebraic charge liquid" (ACL) with pockets of charge -e and +e fermions, and an emergent U(1) gauge field; the instabilities of the ACL lead to the low temperature phases of the underdoped cuprates. The pairing instability lea…
We formulate the exact Wilsonian renormalization group for a system of interacting fermions on a lattice. The flow equations for all vertices of the Wilson effective action are expressed in form of the Polchinski equation. We apply this method to the Hubbard model on a square lattice using both zero- and finite- temperature methods. Truncating the effective action at the sixth term in fermionic variables we obtain the one-loop functional renormalization equations for the effective interaction. We find the temperature of the instability Tc^{RG} as function of doping. We calculate furthermore th…
We use femtosecond resonant soft x-ray diffraction to measure the optically stimulated ultrafast changes of charge density wave correlations in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.6. We find that when coherent interlayer transport is enhanced by optical excitation of the apical oxygen distortions, at least 50% of the in-plane charge density wave order is melted. These results indicate that charge ordering and superconductivity may be competing up to the charge ordering transition temperature, with the latter becoming a hidden phase that is accessible only by nonlinear phonon excitation.
