We present evidence for the existence of a spontaneous instability towards an orbital loop-current phase in a multiorbital Hubbard model for the CuO$_2$ planes in cuprates. Contrary to the previously proposed $θ_{II}$ phase with intra-unit cell currents, the identified instability is towards a staggered pattern of intertwined current loops. The orbitally resolved current pattern thereby shares its staggered character with the proposal of d-density wave order. The current pattern will cause a Fermi surface reconstruction and the opening of a pseudogap. We argue that the pseudogap phase with time-reversal symmetry breaking currents is susceptible to further phase transitions and therefore offers a route to account for axial incommensurate charge order and a polar Kerr effect in underdoped cuprates.
Using muon spin rotation we determine the zero temperature staggered antiferromagnetic order parameter M0 versus hole doping measured from optimum Dp_m, in the (Ca_{x}La_{1-x})(Ba_{1.75-x}La_{0.25+x})Cu_{3}O_{y} system. In this system the maximum Tc and the superexchange J vary by 30% between families (x). M0(x,Dp_m) is found to be x-independent. Using neutron diffraction we also determine the lattice parameters variations for all x and doping. The oxygen buckling angle is found to change with x, implying a change in the holes kinetic energy. We discuss the surprising insensitivity of M0(x,Dp_…
In underdoped cuprates the normal state is highly anomalous and is characterized as a pseudogap phase. The question of how to describe the ``normal'' core of a superconducting vortex is an outstanding open problem. We show that the SU(2) formulation of the t-J model provides a description of the normal state as well as the vortex core. Interestingly, the pseudogap persists inside the core. We also found that it is likely that the core consists of a state which breaks translational symmetry due to the existence of staggered current which generate staggered magnetic field with very slow dynamics…
Based on the SU(2) lattice gauge theory formulation of the t-J model, we discuss possible signature of the unit cell doubling associated with the staggered flux (SF) state in the lightly doped spin liquid. Although the SF state appears only dynamically in a uniform d-wave superconducting (SC) state, a topological defect [SU(2) vortex] freezes the SF state inside the vortex core. Consequently, the unit cell doubling shows up in the hopping ($χ_{ij}$) and pairing ($Δ_{ij}$) order parameters of physical electrons. We find that whereas the center in the vortex core is a SF state, as one moves away…
In the context of t-J model we show that in underdoped regime, beside the usual long wave length gauge field fluctuation, an additional low energy fluctuation, staggered gauge field fluctuation plays a crucial role in the evolution of Fermi surface(FS) as well as the line shape of spectral function for the cuprates. By including the staggered gauge field fluctuation we calculate the spectral function of the electrons by RPA(random phase approximation). The line shape of the spectral function near $(π,0)$ is very broad in underdoped case and is quite sharp in overdoped case. For the spectral fun…
We report a new multi-nuclei based NMR method which allows us to image the staggered polarization induced by nonmagnetic Li impurities in underdoped O6.6 and slightly overdoped O7 YBa2Cu3O6+y above T_C. The spatial extension of the polarization xi_imp approximately follows a Curie law, increasing up to six lattice constants at T=80K at O6.6 in the pseudogap regime. Near optimal doping, the staggered magnetization has the same shape, with xi_imp reduced by a factor 2. xi_imp is argued to reveal the intrinsic magnetic correlation length of the pure system. It is found to display a smooth evoluti…
We study the emergence of charge ordered phases within a pi-loop current (piLC) model for the pseudogap based on a three-band model for underdoped cuprate superconductors. Loop currents and charge ordering are driven by distinct components of the short-range Coulomb interactions: loop currents result from the repulsion between nearest-neighbor copper and oxygen orbitals, while charge order results from repulsion between neighboring oxygen orbitals. We find that the leading piLC phase has an antiferromagnetic pattern similar to previously discovered staggered flux phases, and that it emerges ab…
A system of self-consistent integral equations for the superconducting gap is formulated and solved taking account of the instability of the normal phase of bilayered cuprates against charge-density waves. The critical parameters are calculated as a function of the wave vector, temperature, and doping index. It is found that the region in which superconductivity coexists with d-type charge-density waves depends strongly on the doping index. The effective energy-gap parameter, determined as the interval between the peaks of the density of states, can have a local minimum at temperatures T$<$T$_…
We propose an interpretation for the hump observed in the optical conductivity at or below a few hundreds of cm$^{-1}$, in overdoped cuprates like the electron-doped Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_{4-y} at x\gtrsim 0.15 and the hole-doped Bi_2Sr_2CuO_6 and La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4. This interpretation is based on the direct excitation of charge collective modes, which become nearly critical in the proximity to a charge-ordering instability. The nearly critical character of these excitations entails a peculiar temperature dependence and a pseudo-scaling form of the lineshapes, which are in agreement with the experim…
We propose that cuprate superconductors are in the vicinity of a spontaneous d-wave type Fermi surface symmetry breaking, often called a d-wave Pomeranchuk instability. This idea is explored by means of a comprehensive study of magnetic excitations within the slave-boson mean-field theory of the t-J model. We can naturally understand the pronounced xy anisotropy of magnetic excitations in untwinned YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y} and the sizable change of incommensurability of magnetic excitations at the transition temperature to the low-temperature tetragonal lattice structure in La_{2-x}Ba_{x}CuO_{4}. In…
Motivated by the observation of inhomogeneous patterns in some high-T$_c$ cuprate compounds, several variational Gutzwiller-projected wave-functions with built-in charge and bond order parameters are proposed for the extended $t-J-V$ model on the square lattice at low doping. First, following a recent Gutzwiller-projected mean-field approach by one of us (Phys. Rev. B. {\bf 72}, 060508(R) (2005)), we investigate, as a function of doping and Coulomb repulsion, the stability of the staggered flux phase with respect to small spontaneous modulations of squared unit cells ranging from $2\times 2$ t…
On the basis of the Hubbard model, we extend the fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approach to investigating the properties of antiferromagnetic (AF) phase in electron-doped cuprate superconductors. Furthermore, by incorporating the effect of scatterings due to the disordered dopant-atoms into the FLEX formalism, our numerical results show that the antiferromagnetic transition temperature, the onset temperature of pseudogap due to spin fluctuations, the spectral density of the single particle near the Fermi surface, and the staggered magnetization in the AF phase as a function of electron doping can…
An ordered $d$-density wave (DDW) state has been proposed as an explanation of the pseudogap phase in underdoped high-temperature superconductors. The staggered currents associated with this order have signatures which are qualitatively different from those of ordered spins. We apply the order parameter theory to an orthorhombic bilayer system and show that the expected magnitude as well as the momentum, energy, and polarization dependence of the consequent neutron scattering is consistent with the findings of a recent experiment.
The pseudogap phase of the cuprate superconductors is argued to be characterized by a hidden broken symmetry of d-wave character in the particle-hole channel that leads to staggered orbital magnetism. This proposal has many striking phenomenological consequences, but the most direct signature of this order should be visible in the neutron scattering experiments. The theoretical underpinning of these experiments is discussed.
Metals interacting via short-range antiferromagnetic fluctuations are unstable to sign-changing superconductivity at low temperatures. For the cuprates, this leading instability leads to the well known $d-$wave superconducting state. However, there is also a secondary instability to an incommensurate charge density wave, with a predominantly $d-$wave form factor, arising from the same antiferromagnetic fluctuations. Recent experiments in the pseudogap regime of the hole-doped cuprates have found strong evidence for such a charge density wave order and, in particular, the predicted $d-$wave for…
The doping and temperature dependences of the Fermi arc in the staggered-flux, or the d-density wave, ordered phase of the t-J model are analyzed by the U(1) slave boson theory. Nontrivial behavior is revealed by the self-consistent calculation. At low doped and finite-temperature region, both the length of the Fermi arc and the width of the Fermi pocket are proportional to $δ$ and the area of the Fermi pocket is proportional to $δ^2$. This behavior is completely different from that at the zero temperature, where the area of the Fermi pocket becomes $π^2 δ$. This behavior should be observed by…
We study the electronic structure of the vortex core in the cuprates using the U(1) slave-boson mean-field wavefunctions and their Gutzwiller projection. We conclude that there exists local orbital antiferromagnetic order in the core near optimal doping. We compare the results with that of BCS theory and analyze the spatial dependence of the local tunneling density of states.
The effects of a non-magnetic Zn impurity substituting an in-plane Cu are studied by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation self-consistently which is derived from the \ttju Hamiltonian with all the allowed order parameters included. The Zn impurity, modeled in terms of a potential scatterer in unitary limit, induces local staggered magnetic moments around itself, and the calculated NMR shifts from the induced moments are in agreement with the experimental Cu NMR spectra. We also note that the experimentally observed negative slope of the tunneling conductance can result from the next-neare…
Two recent quantum oscillation studies find contradictory results concerning the existence of spin zeros - zeros of the oscillatory signal induced by Zeeman splitting of the Landau levels. We discuss these experiments in light of calculations of the oscillations assuming a spin density wave state. We find that the lack of spin zeros reported in one of the experiments is consistent with either hole or electron pockets in such a state, if the staggered moment is perpendicular to the external field. An analysis for field directions near the planes might be able to differentiate between the two. O…
The electronic nematic order characterized by broken rotational symmetry has been suggested to play an important role in the phase diagram of the high temperature cuprates. We study the interplay between the electronic nematic order and a spin density wave order in the presence of a magnetic field. We show that a cooperation of the nematicity and the magnetic field induces a finite coupling between the spin density wave and spin-triplet staggered flux orders. As a consequence of such a coupling, the magnon gap decreases as the magnetic field increases, and it eventually condenses beyond a crit…
The understanding of the origin of superconductivity in cuprates has been hindered by the apparent diversity of intertwining electronic orders in these materials. We combined resonant x-ray scattering (REXS), scanning-tunneling microscopy (STM), and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to observe a charge order that appears consistently in surface and bulk, and in momentum and real space within one cuprate family, Bi2201. The observed wave vectors rule out simple antinodal nesting in the single-particle limit but match well with a phenomenological model of a many-body instability …
We use an SU(2) mean-field theory approach with input from variational wavefunctions of the t-J model to study the electronic spectra in the pseudogap phase of cuprates. In our model, the high-temperature state of underdoped cuprates is realized by classical fluctuations of the order parameter between the d-wave superconductor and the staggered-flux state. Spectral functions of the intermediate and the averaged states are computed and analyzed. Our model predicts a photoemission spectrum with an asymmetric gap structure interpolating between the superconducting gap centered at the Fermi energy…
The SU(2) slave-boson mean-field theory for the tt'J model is analyzed. The role of next-nearest-neighbor hopping t' on the phase-diagram is studied. We find a pseudogap phase in hole-doped materials (where t'<0). The pseudo-gap phase is a U(1) spin liquid (the staggered-flux phase) with a U(1) gauge interaction and no fractionalization. This agrees with experiments on hole doped samples. The same calculation also indicates that a positive t' favors a Z2 state with true spin-charge separation. The Z2 state that exists when t' > 0.5J can be a candidate for the pseudo-gap phase of electron-doped…
Based on the analysis of the measurement data of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and optics, we show that the charge transfer gap is significantly smaller than the optical one and is reduced by doping in electron doped cuprate superconductors. This leads to a strong charge fluctuation between the Zhang-Rice singlet and the upper Hubbard bands. The basic model for describing this system is a hybridized two-band $t$-$J$ model. In the symmetric limit where the corresponding intra- and inter-band hopping integrals are equal to each other, this two-band model is equivalent to the …
We study the properties of a class of two-dimensional interacting critical states -- dubbed algebraic spin liquids -- that can arise in two-dimensional quantum magnets. A particular example that we focus on is the staggered flux spin liquid, which plays a key role in some theories of underdoped cuprate superconductors. We show that the low-energy theory of such states has much higher symmetry than the underlying microscopic spin system. This symmetry has remarkable consequences, leading in particular to the unification of a number of seemingly unrelated competing orders. The correlations of th…
The interaction Hamiltonian for a system of polarons a la Feynman in the presence of long range Coulomb interaction is derived and the dielectric function is computed in mean field. For large enough concentration a liquid of such particles becomes unstable. The onset of the instability is signaled by the softening of a collective optical mode in which all electrons oscillate in phase in their respective self-trapping potential. We associate the instability with a metallization of the system. Optical experiments in slightly doped cuprates and doped nickelates are analyzed within this theory. We…
On the basis of the Hubbard model, we present the formulation of antiferromagnetism in electron-doped cuprates using the fluctuation-exchange approach. Taking into account the spin fluctuations in combination with the impurity scattering effect due to the randomly distributed dopant-atoms, we investigate the magnetic properties of the system. It is shown that the antiferromagnetic transition temperature, the onset temperature of the pseudogap formation, the single particle spectral density, and the staggered magnetization obtained by the present approach are in very good agreement with the exp…
We develop a slave-boson theory for the t-J model at finite doping which respect a SU(2) symmetry -- a symmetry previously known to be important at half filling. The mean field phase diagram is found to be consistent with the phases observed in the cuprate superconductors, which contains d-wave superconductor, spin gap, strange metal, and Fermi liquid phases. The spin gap phase is best understood as the staggered flux phase, which is nevertheless translationally invariant for physical quantities. The physical electron spectral function shows small Fermi segments at low doping which continuousl…
The concept of topological excitations and the related ground state degeneracy are employed to establish an effective theory of the superconducting state evolving from the Mott insulator for high-Tc cuprates. Casting the Coulomb interaction in terms of composite-fermions via the gauge flux attachment facility, we show that instanton events in the Matsubara "imaginary time," labeled by topological winding numbers, are essential configurations of the phase field dual to the charge. In analogy to the usual phase transition that is characterized by a sudden change of the symmetry, the topological …
In the framework of the slave-boson approach to the $t-t'-t''-J$ model, it is found that for electron-doped high-$T_c$ cuprates, the staggered antiferromagnetic (AF) order coexists with superconducting (SC) order in a wide doping level ranged from underdoped to nearly optimal doping at the mean-field level. In the coexisting phase, it is revealed that the spin response is commensurate in a substantial frequency range below a crossover frequency $ω_{c}$ for all dopings considered, and it switches to the incommensurate structure when the frequency is higher than $ω_{c}$. This result is in agreem…
We study the thermally fluctuating state of a bi-layer cuprate superconductor under the periodic action of a staggered field oscillating at optical frequencies. This analysis distills essential elements of the recently discovered phenomenon of light enhanced coherence in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$, which was achieved by periodically driving infrared active apical oxygen distortions. The effect of a staggered periodic perturbation is studied using a Langevin and Fokker-Planck description of driven, coupled Josephson junctions, which represent two neighboring pairs of layers and their two plasmons. …
We solve the problem of $N$ non magnetic impurities in the staggered flux phase of the Heisenberg model which we assume to be a good mean-field approximation for the spin-gap phase of the cuprates. The density of states is evaluated exactly in the unitary limit and is porportional to $1/\left (ω\ln^2(|ω|/D))$, in analogy with the 1D case of doped spin-Peierls and two-leg ladders compounds. We argue that the system exhibits a quasi long-range order at T=0 with instantaneous spin-spin correlations decreasing as $n_i/ \ln^2\left (n_i R_{ij})$ for large distances $R_{ij}$ and we predict enhanced l…
The extended $t-J$ model is theoretically studied, in the context of hole underdoped cuprates. Based on results obtained by recent numerical studies, we identify the mean field state having both the antiferromagnetic and staggered flux resonating valence bond orders. The random-phase approximation is employed to analyze all the possible collective modes in this mean field state. In the static (Bardeen Cooper Schrieffer) limit justified in the weak coupling regime, we obtain the effective superconducting interaction between the doped holes at the small pockets located around $\bm{k}= (\pm π/2, …
We apply the spin-fermion model to study the normal state and pairing instability in electron-doped cuprates near the antiferromagnetic QCP. Peculiar frequency dependencies of the normal state properties are shown to emerge from the self-consistent equations on the fermionic and bosonic self-energies, and are in agreement with experimentally observed ones. We argue that the pairing instability is in the $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ channel, as in hole-doped cuprates, but theoretical $T_{c}$ is much lower than in the hole-doped case. For the same hopping integrals and the interaction strength as in hole-d…
IIn the pseudogap regime of the cuprates, charge order breaks a $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ symmetry. Therefore, the interaction of charge order and quenched disorder due to potential scattering, can, in principle, be treated as a random field Ising model. A numerical analysis of the ground state of such a random field Ising model reveals local, glassy dynamics in both $2D$ and $3D$. The glassy dynamics are treated as a heat bath which couple to the itinerant electrons, leading to an unusual electronic non-Fermi liquid. If the dynamics are strong enough, the electron spectral function has no quasiparticl…
The recently discovered charge order is a generic feature of cuprate superconductors, however, its microscopic origin remains debated. Within the framework of the fermion-spin theory, the nature of charge order in the pseudogap phase and its evolution with doping are studied by taking into account the electron self-energy (then the pseudogap) effect. It is shown that the antinodal region of the electron Fermi surface is suppressed by the electron self-energy, and then the low-energy electron excitations occupy the disconnected Fermi arcs located around the nodal region. In particular, the char…
Motivated by recent transport and neutron scattering experiments suggesting an orientational symmetry breaking in underdoped cuprates we present a theoretical study of Raman scattering near a d-wave Pomeranchuk instability (PI). The d-wave component of Raman scattering from electrons and phonons allows to study directly order parameter fluctuations associated with the PI. Approaching the PI from the normal state by lowering the temperature a central peak emerges both in electronic and, as an additional low-frequency feature, in phononic scattering. Approaching the PI in the superconducting sta…
To understand the origin of unconventional charge-density-wave (CDW) states in cuprate superconductors, we establish the self-consistent CDW equation, and analyze the CDW instabilities based on the realistic Hubbard model, without assuming any $q$-dependence and the form factor. Many higher-order many-body processes, which are called the vertex corrections, are systematically generated by solving the CDW equation. When the spin fluctuations are strong, the uniform $q=0$ nematic CDW with $d$-form factor shows the leading instability. The axial nematic CDW instability at $q = Q_a = (δ,0)$ ($δ\ap…
We present a coherent scenario for the physics of cuprate superconductors, which is based on a charge-driven inhomogeneity, i.e. the ``stripe phase''. We show that spin and charge critical fluctuations near the stripe instability of strongly correlated electron systems provide an effective interaction between the quasiparticles, which is strongly momentum, frequency, temperature and doping dependent. This accounts for the various phenomena occurring in the overdoped, optimally and underdoped regimes both for the normal and the superconductive phase.
At a (110) surface of a $d_{x^2-y-2}$-wave superconductor, superconducting order is strongly suppressed. In such a situation, ordered states that are forbidden in the bulk may arise. This problem is studied for high-$T_C$ cuprate superconductors by treating the $t-J$ model with extended transfer integrals using the Bogoliubov de Gennes method. It is found that a flux phase with staggered currents along the surface, or an antiferromagnetic state can occur near the surface. Stability of the emergent surface states is different from system to system depending on the shapes of their Fermi surfaces…
Bulk magnetic order in two dimensional La4Ni3O8 nickelate with Ni1+/Ni2+ (d9/d8), isoelectronic with superconducting cuprates is demonstrated experimentally and theoretically. Magnetization, specific heat and 139La NMR evidence a transition at 105 K to an antiferromagnetic state. Theoretical calculations by DFT relate the transition to a nesting instability of the Fermi surface with ordering wave-vector Q = [1/3, 1/3, 0].
A d-wave superconductor, its phase coherence progressively destroyed by unbinding of vortex-antivortex pairs, suffers an instability related to chiral symmetry breaking in two-flavor QED$_3$. The chiral manifold exhibits large degeneracy spanned by physical states acting as inherent ``competitors'' of d-wave superconductivity. Two of these states are associated with antiferromagnetic insulator and ``stripe'' phases, known to be stable in the pseudogap regime of cuprates near half-filling. The theory also predicts additional, yet unobserved state: a d+ip phase-incoherent superconductor.
By using a model Hamiltonian with d-wave superconductivity and competing antiferromagnetic (AF) orders, the local staggered magnetization distribution due to nonmagnetic impurities in cuprate superconductors is investigated. From this, the net magnetic moment induced by a single or double impurities can be obtained. We show that the net moment induced by a single impurity corresponds to a local spin with S_z=0, or 1/2 depending on the strength of the AF interaction and the impurity scattering. When two impurities are placed at the nearest neighboring sites, the net moment is always zero. For t…
We explain qualitatively why the staggered flux state plays a central role in the SU(2) formulation of the t-J model, which we use to model the pseudogap state in underdoped cuprates. This point of view is supported by studies of projected wavefunctions. In addition to staggered orbital current correlations, we present here for the first time results of correlations involving hole and spin chirality and show that the two are closely related. The staggered flux state allows us to construct cheap and fast vortices, which may hold the key to explaining the many anomalous properties of the normal …
Experiments carried over the last years on the underdoped cuprates have revealed a variety of symmetry-breaking phenomena in the pseudogap state. Charge-density waves, breaking of $C_{4}$ rotational symmetry as well as time-reversal symmetry breaking have all been observed in several cuprate families. In this regard, theoretical models where multiple non-superconducting orders emerge are of particular interest. We consider the recently introduced (Phys. Rev. B 93, 085131 (2016)) spin-fermion model with overlapping 'hot spots' on the Fermi surface. Focusing on the particle-hole instabilities we…
Recently a new phenomenological Hamiltonian has been proposed to describe the superconducting cuprates. This so-called Gossamer Hamiltonian is an apt model for a superconductor with strong on-site Coulomb repulsion betweenthe electrons. It is shown that as one approaches half-filling the Gossamer superconductor, and hence the superconducting state, with strong repulsion is unstable toward an antiferromagnetic insulator an can undergo a quantum phase transition to such an insulator if one increases the on-site Coulomb repulsion.
Fermi surface models applied to the underdoped cuprates predict the small pocket area to be strongly dependent on doping whereas quantum oscillations in YBa2Cu3O6+x find precisely the opposite to be true; seemingly at odds with the Luttinger volume. We show that such behavior can be explained by an incommensurate antinodal Fermi surface nesting-type instability; further explaining the doping-dependent superstructures seen in cuprates using scanning tunneling microscopy. We develop a Fermi surface reconstruction scheme involving orthogonal density waves in two-dimensions and show that their inc…
We present a microscopic derivation of the nematic charge-density-wave (CDW) formation in cuprate superconductors based on the three-orbital d-p Hubbard model, by introducing the vertex correction (VC) into the charge susceptibility. The CDW instability at $q=(Δ_{FS},0)$, $(0,Δ_{FS})$ appears when the spin fluctuations are strong, due to the strong charge-spin interference represented by the VC. Here, $Δ_{FS}$ is the wavenumber between the neighboring hot spots. The obtained spin-fluctuation-driven CDW is expressed as the "intra-unit-cell orbital order" accompanied by the charge transfer betwe…
The representative cuprate, La$_{2-x}$M$_x$CuO$_4$, with M = Sr and $x = 1/8$ is studied via first-principles calculations in the high-temperature tetragonal (HTT), low-temperature orthorhombic (LTO), and low-temperature less-orthorhombic (LTLO) structures. By suppressing the magnetism and superconductivity, the LTLO phase, which has rarely been observed in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, is found to be the ground state, where the structural phase transitions, HTT$\rightarrow$LTO$\rightarrow$LTLO, can be understood via phonon instability. While the La-O composition is identified to be responsible for…
We study bond-order parameters for generalized $t$-$J$ models on a square lattice. Using the plane-wave limit the considered order parameters form basis functions for irreducible representations of the symmetry transformations of the point group and of time reversal. We show that for instability wave vectors along the diagonals all possible basis functions are either fine-tuned (i.e., obey restrictions beyond the requirements of symmetry) or break time reversal symmetry and thus describe flux states. For instability wave vectors along the crystalline axes, corresponding to the observed case in…
In a frame of the $t-J-G$ model we derive the microscopical expression for the circulating orbital currents in layered cuprates using the anomalous correlation functions. In agreement with $μ$-on spin relaxation ($μ$SR), nuclear quadrupolar resonance (NQR) and inelastic neutron scattering(INS) experiments in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ we successfully explain the order of magnitude and the monotonous increase of the {\it internal} magnetic fields resulting from these currents upon cooling. However, the jump in the intensity of the magnetic fields at T$_c$ reported recently seems to indicate a non-m…
We develop a theory for light-induced superconductivity in underdoped cuprates in which the competing bond-density wave order is suppressed by driving phonons with light. Close to a bond-density wave instability in a system with a small Fermi surface, such as a fractionalized Fermi liquid, we show that the coupling of electrons to phonons is strongly enhanced at the bond-density wave ordering wavevectors, leading to a strong softening of phonons at these wavevectors. For a model of classical phonons with anharmonic couplings, we show that the combination of strong softening and driving can lea…
Establishing the presence and the nature of a quantum critical point in their phase diagram is a central enigma of the high-temperature superconducting cuprates. It could explain their pseudogap and strange metal phases, and ultimately their high superconducting temperatures. Yet, while solid evidences exist in several unconventional superconductors of ubiquitous critical fluctuations associated to a quantum critical point, in the cuprates they remain undetected until now. Here using symmetry-resolved electronic Raman scattering in the cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$, we report the obser…
It is shown that the electric charge of vortices can result in a helical instability of straight vortex lines in layered superconductors, particularly Bi-based cuprates or organic superconductors. This instability may result in a phase transition to a uniformly twisted vortex state, which could be detected by torque magnetometry, neutron diffraction, electromagnetic or calorimetric measurements.
Hole doped cuprates show a superconducting critical temperature $T_c$ which follows an universal dome-shaped behavior as function of doping. It is believed that the origin of superconductivity in cuprates is entangled with the physics of the pseudogap phase. An open discussion is whether the source of superconductivity is the same that causes the pseudogap properties. The $t$-$J$ model treated in large-N expansion shows $d$-wave superconductivity triggered by non-retarded interactions, and an instability of the paramagnetic state to a flux phase or $d$-wave charge density wave ($d$-CDW) state.…
It is now well established that Zn doping of high-$T_C$ cuprates reduces their $T_C$ and triggers the appearence of a spin glass phase. In this context, we have solved exactly the problem of N non magnetic impurities in the staggered flux phase of the Heisenberg model which we assume to be a good mean-field approximation for the spin-gap phase of the cuprates. In this model, the quasiparticule spectrum has four nodes on the Fermi surface, and linearization of the spectrum in the neighbourhood of these nodes leads to a system of 2D Dirac fermions. In the presence of a macroscopic number of (non…
Recently, complex phase transitions accompanied by the rotational symmetry breaking have been discovered experimentally in cuprate superconductors. To find the realized order parameters, we study various charge susceptibilities in an unbiased way, by applying the functional-renormalization-group method to the realistic $d$-$p$ Hubbard model. Without assuming the wavevector of the order parameter, we reveal that the most dominant instability is the uniform ($q = 0$) charge modulation on the $p_x$ and $p_y$ orbitals, which possesses the d-symmetry. This uniform nematic order triggers another nem…
We study the static charge correlation function in an one-band model on a square lattice. The Hamiltonian consist of effective hoppings of the electrons between the lattice sites and the Heisenberg Hamiltonian. Approximating the irreducible charge correlation function by a single bubble yields the ladder approximation for the charge correlation function. In this approximation one finds in general three charge instabilities, two of them are due to nesting, the third one is the flux phase instability. Since these instabilities cannot explain the experiments in hole-doped cuprates we have include…
A d-wave superconductor, subject to strong phase fluctuations, is known to suffer an antiferromagnetic instability closely related to the chiral symmetry breaking in (2+1)-dimensional quantum electrodynamics (QED3). On the basis of this idea we formulate a "QED3 in a box" theory of local instabilities of a d-wave superconductor in the vicinity of a single pinned vortex undergoing quantum fluctuations around its equilibrium position. As a generic outcome we find an incommensurate 2D spin density wave forming in the neighborhood of a vortex with a concomitant "checkerboard" pattern in the local …
