The t-J model is a paradigmatic model for the study of strongly correlated electron systems. In particular, it has been argued that it is an appropriate model to describe the cuprate high-Tc superconductors. It turns out that a comprehensive understanding of the gamut of physics encoded by the t-J model is still an open problem. In recent years some remarkable experiments on the cuprates, for example, discovery of nodeless superconductivity in underdoped samples (PNAS 109, 18332 (2012)), discovery of s-wave like gap in the pseudogap phase (Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 107001 (2013)), and observation of polar Kerr effect (PKE) (Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 047003 (2014)), have thrown up new challenges for this model. Here, we present results demonstrating that, within the slave-particle formulation of the t-J model, the d-wave superconductor is unstable at low doping to its own anti-symmetric phase mode fluctuations when the effect of fluctuations is treated self-consistently. We then show that this instability gives way to a time reversal symmetry broken d + is-SC in the underdoped region which has superfluid stiffness consistent with Uemura relation, even with a large pair amplitude. We show that our results are consistent with existing experiments on cuprates and suggest that Josephson (SQUID interferometry) experiments can clearly distinguish the d+is-SC from a host of other possibilities alluded to be contributing to the physics of underdoped cuprates. We also comment on other theoretical studies vis-a-vis ours.
Superlattice of spin vortices has been proposed in an earlier article as an alternative to the stripe interpretation of spin modulations in 1/8-doped lanthanum cuprates. The present article addresses several additional characteristics of the spin vortex lattice, namely: (i) the nature of extended charge states; (ii) the position of neutron spin peaks as a function of doping; and (iii) the absence of higher order spin harmonics. All these characteristics afford straightforward connection to the experimental results produced by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, resistivity measurements,…
One of the most intriguing aspects of cuprates is a large pseudogap coexisting with a high superconducting transition temperature. Here, we study pairing in the cuprates from electron-electron interactions by constructing the pair vertex using spectral functions derived from angle resolved photoemission data for a near optimal doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ sample that has a pronounced pseudogap. Assuming that that the pseudogap is {\it not} due to pairing, we find that the superconducting instability is strongly suppressed, in stark contrast to what is actually observed. Using an analyti…
Irrespective of the class they belong to, all the hole doped high-Tc cuprate superconductors show an anti-correlation between the superconducting transition temperature and the characteristic pseudogap energy in the underdoped region. The doping dependent pseudogap in the quasiparticle spectral density is believed to remove low-energy electronic states and thereby reduce the superconducting condensate. Impurities within the CuO2 plane, on the other hand, break Cooper pairs in the unitarity limit and diminish superfluid density. Both pseudogap in pure cuprates and impurity scattering in disorde…
There are two commonly discussed points of view in theoretical description of cuprate superconductors, (i) Cuprates can be described by the modified t-J model. (ii) Overdoped cuprates are close to the regime of normal Fermi liquid (NFL). We argue that recent resonant inelastic X-ray scattering data challenge both points. While the modified t-J model describes well the strongly underdoped regime, it fails to describe high energy magnetic excitations when approaching optimal doping. This probably indicates failure of the Zhang-Rice singlet picture. In the overdoped regime the momentum-integrated…
We discuss the evolution of high-order Van Hove singularities (hoVHSs) that carry faster-than logarithmic divergences over a wide range of parameters in cuprate-like electronic band dispersions. Numerical analysis gives insight into the quantization of the VHS power-law-exponent pV and into transitions between hoVHSs with different values of pV. The cuprates are found to lie in the parameter regime where the amplitude of the hoVHS is not too large. Our study indicates that the occurrence of high-temperature superconductivity requires simultaneous tuning of two different competing orders (antif…
The theory of electron-phonon interaction in the presence of strong correlation has been investigated in the present work. Due to the so called spin-charge separation, it is argued that the electron-phonon interaction in the strongly interacting systems is fundamentally different from the weakly interacting counterparts. Both spinons and holons are shown to carry electric charge and couple to the electromagnetic field and consequently to phonons. A systematic approach to calculate the dynamical charge of spinons and holons is presented, followed by a discussion of implications of this model fo…
Where the doped holes reside in cuprate superconductors has crucial implications for the understanding of the mechanism responsible for their high temperature superconductivity. It has been generally assumed that doped holes reside in hybridized Cu $d_{x^2-y^2}$ - O $pσ$ orbitals in the $CuO_2$ planes, based on results of density functional band structure calculations. Instead, we propose that doped holes in the cuprates reside in O $pπ$ orbitals in the plane, perpendicular to the $Cu-O$ bond, that are raised to the Fermi energy through local orbital relaxation, that is not taken into account …
We have revisited the electronic structure of infinite-layer RNiO$_2$ (R= La, Nd) in light of the recent discovery of superconductivity in Sr-doped NdNiO$_2$. From a comparison to their cuprate counterpart CaCuO$_2$, we derive essential facts related to their electronic structures, in particular the values for various hopping parameters and energy splittings, and the influence of the spacer cation. From this detailed comparison, we comment on expectations in regards to superconductivity. In particular, both materials exhibit a large ratio of longer-range hopping to near-neighbor hopping which …
We derive the fermionic contribution to the longitudinal and Hall conductivities within a Kubo formalism, using a phenomenological Greens function which has been previously developed to describe photoemission data in the pseudogap phase of the cuprates. We find that the in-plane electrical and thermal conductivities are metallic-like, showing a universal limit behavior characteristic of a d-wave spectrum as the scattering rate goes to zero. In contrast, the c-axis resistivity and the Hall number are insulating-like, being divergent in the same limit. The relation of these results to transport …
We report on results of our analysis of published experimental data of the in-plane infrared response of two representative underdoped high-$T_{\mathrm{c}}$ cuprate superconductors, focusing on a characteristic gap feature in the spectra of the real part of the conductivity and the corresponding structures of the memory function, that develop below a temperature $T^{\mathrm{ons}}$ considerably higher than $T_{\mathrm{c}}$. Several arguments based on comparisons of the data with results of our calculations are provided indicating that the features are due to superconductivity and that $T^{\math…
We study the diamagnetism of the 6-vertex model with the arrows as directed bond currents. To our knowledge, this is the first study of the diamagnetism of this model. A special version of this model, called F model, describes the thermal disordering transition of an orbital antiferromagnet, known as d-density wave (DDW), a proposed state for the pseudogap phase of the high-Tc cuprates. We find that the F model is strongly diamagnetic and the susceptibility may diverge in the high temperature critical phase with power law arrow correlations. These results may explain the surprising recent obse…
Recent development in the physics of high-temperature cuprate superconductivity is reviewed, with special emphasis on the phenomena of unconventional and non-universal low-energy excitations of hole- and electron-type cuprate superconductors and the possible physical origin. A phenomenology based on coexisting competing orders with cuprate superconductivity in the ground state appears to provide consistent account for a wide range of experimental findings, including the presence (absence) of pseudogaps and Fermi arcs above the superconducting transition $T_c$ in hole-type (electron-type) cupra…
We addressed the issue of the absence of the far-infrared signatures pertaining to charge ordering in the published far-infrared reflectivity data of La2-xSrxCuO4 single crystals while other experimental probes unravel that charge ordering is a hallmark of the superconducting cuprates. Through direct comparison of the far-infrared data reported by various groups side by side and also with the Raman scattering data, we found that the inconsistencies stem from the failure in capturing delicate spectral features embedded in the close-to-perfect ab-plane far-infrared reflectivity of La2-xSrxCuO4 s…
We compare the position of an ordering transition in a metal to that in a superconductor. For the spin density wave (SDW) transition, we find that the quantum critical point shifts by order |Delta|, where Delta is pairing amplitude, so that the region of SDW order is smaller in the superconductor than in the metal. This shift is larger than the ~ |Delta|^2 shift predicted by theories of competing orders which ignore Fermi surface effects. For Ising-nematic order, the shift from Fermi surface effects remains of order |Delta|^2. We discuss implications of these results for the phase diagrams of …
There is a multiplicity of charge ordered, pairing-based or pair density wave theories of the cuprate pseudogap, albeit arising from different microscopic mechanisms. For mean field schemes (of which there are many) we demonstrate here that they have precise implications for two body physics in the same way that they are able to address the one body physics of photoemission spectroscopy. This follows because the full vertex can be obtained exactly from the Ward-Takahashi identity. As an illustration, we present the spin response functions, finding that a recently proposed pair density wave (Am…
Superconductivity in the cuprates emerges from an enigmatic metallic state. There remain profound open questions regarding the universality of observed phenomena and the character of precursor fluctuations above the superconducting (SC) transition temperature (T_c). For single-CuO_2-layer La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 (LSCO) and Bi_2(Sr,La)_2CuO_{6+δ} (Bi2201), some experiments seem to indicate an onset of SC fluctuations at very high temperatures (2-3 times T_c^{max}, the T_c value at optimal hole concentration p), whereas other measurements suggest that fluctuations are confined to the immediate vicinit…
The electronic nematic order characterized by broken rotational symmetry has been suggested to play an important role in the phase diagram of the high temperature cuprates. We study the interplay between the electronic nematic order and a spin density wave order in the presence of a magnetic field. We show that a cooperation of the nematicity and the magnetic field induces a finite coupling between the spin density wave and spin-triplet staggered flux orders. As a consequence of such a coupling, the magnon gap decreases as the magnetic field increases, and it eventually condenses beyond a crit…
The Fermi-liquid-like (FL) resistivity recently observed in clean HgBa2CuO4 below the pseudogap temperature was related to carriers at the nodal points on the Fermi surface [4]. We show that this necessitates important implications for the electronic spectrum of underdoped (UD) cuprates in whole. Photoemission experiments picture the spectrum as of metallic arcs separated from each other by regions with large energy gaps. We solved the kinetic equation in such model rigorously. The Fermi arcs carriers contribute to FL resistivity, if scattering between the opposite nodal points admits the Umkl…
We review the recent developments in the field of cuprate superconductors with the special focus on the recently observed charge order in the underdoped compounds. We introduce new theoretical developments following the study of the antiferromagnetic (AF) quantum critical point (QCP) in two dimensions, in which preemptive orders in the charge and superconducting (SC) sectors emerged, that are in turn related by an SU(2) symmetry. We consider the implications of this proliferation of orders in the underdoped region, and provide a study of the type of fluctuations which characterize the SU(2) sy…
Bardeen-Schrieffer-Cooper (BCS) and Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) occur at opposite limits of a continuum of pairing interaction strength between fermions. A crossover between these limits is readily observed in a cold atomic Fermi gas. Whether it occurs in other systems such as the high temperature superconducting cuprates has remained an open question. We uncover here unambiguous evidence for a BCS-BEC crossover in the cuprates by identifying a universal magic gap ratio 2Δ/k_BT_c ~ 6.5 (where Δis the pairing gap and Tc is the transition temperature) at which paired fermion condensates bec…
Short Coherence Length Superconductivity: A Generalization of BCS Theory for the Underdoped Cuprates
Constant effective mass across the phase diagram of high-T$_{c}$ cuprates
The possibility of driving phase transitions in low-density condensates through the loss of phase coherence alone has far-reaching implications for the study of quantum phases of matter. This has inspired the development of tools to control and explore the collective properties of condensate phases via phase fluctuations. Electrically-gated oxide interfaces, ultracold Fermi atoms, and cuprate superconductors, which are characterized by an intrinsically small phase-stiffness, are paradigmatic examples where these tools are having a dramatic impact. Here we use light pulses shorter than the inte…
We investigate the strong influence of the $Θ_{II}$-loop-current order on both unidirectional and bidirectional d-wave charge-density-wave/pair-density-wave (CDW/PDW) composite orders along axial momenta $(\pm Q_0,0)$ and $(0,\pm Q_0)$ that emerge in an effective hot spot model departing from the three-band Emery model relevant to the phenomenology of the cuprate superconductors. This study is motivated by the compelling evidence that the $Θ_{II}$-loop-current order described by this model may explain groundbreaking experiments such as spin-polarized neutron scattering performed in these mater…

Effects of $τ_1$ Scattering on Fourier-Transformed Inelastic Tunneling Spectra in High-$T_c$ Cuprates with Bosonic Modes
