The electronic properties of multilayers of strongly correlated models for cuprate superconductors are investigated using cluster dynamical mean-field techniques. We focus on combinations of underdoped and overdoped layers and find that the superconducting order parameter in the overdoped layers is enhanced by the proximity effect of the strong pairing scale originating from the underdoped layers. The enhanced order parameter can even exceed the maximum value in uniform systems. This behavior is well reproduced in slave-boson mean-field calculations which also find higher transition temperatures than in the uniform system.
The electronic structure of interfaces between YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_6$ and SrTiO$_3$ is studied using local spin density approximation (LSDA) with intra-atomic Coulomb repulsion (LSDA+U). We find a metallic state in cuprate/titanate heterostructures with the hole carriers concentrated substantially in the CuO$_2$-layers and in the first interface TiO$_2$ and SrO planes. This effective interface doping appears due to the polarity of interfaces, caused by the first incomplete copper oxide unit cell. We analyze the superconducting state and the c-axis charge dynamics of cuprates using a charged ordered bilayer superlattice model in which pairing is supported by inter-layer Coulomb energy gain. The superlattice nature of high temperature superconductivity is experimentally suggested by the smallness of the coherent length ξ= 10 to 30 A which is comparable with a width of a 4X4 to 8X8 square supercell lattice layer. We investigate magnetic and superconducting properties of layered $f$-electron superlattices within the fluctuation exchange approximation (FLEX). We show that spin fluctuations, which are characterized by the maximum value of the spin susceptibility in the 3-dimensional (3D) Brillouin zone, are strongly suppressed in $f$-electron superlattices. However, effective 2D spin fluctuations can be increased due to the spatial confinement of the $f$-electrons. The disclosure of spinon superconductivity and superconductivity mediated by spin-waves in hole-doped Bi2212 cuprate raises the question about the origin of the superconductivity in other cuprates and specially in an electron-doped NCCO cuprate.
The competition of superconductivity and magnetism in superlattices composed of alternating YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-d}$ and La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ thin films is investigated using low-energy optical spectroscopy. The thickness of the superconducting YBCO layers is varied from 30 nm to 20 nm while the thickness of the magnetic LCMO layers is kept constant at 20 nm. Unconventional superconductivity and magnetism are intertwined on a microscopic level in a wide class of materials, including high-$T_c$ cuprates, iron pnictides, and heavy-fermion compounds. A new approach to this most fundamental and hotly debated subject focuses on the role of interactions between superconducting electrons and bosonic fluctuations at the interface between adjacent layers in heterostructures. The possibility of kinetic energy driven superconductivity in cuprates as was recently found in the $tJ$ model is discussed. We argue that the violation of the virial theorem implied by this result is serious and means that the description of superconductivity within the $tJ$ model is pathological.
We utilize a 1d Hubbard model to show that the superconductivity in cuprate superconductors likely arises due to the orbital entanglement between holes in the copper oxide plane mediated by orbitally-selective charge hopping. The main role of doping required to achieve superconductivity in cuprates is to suppress the Mott correlations and orbital ordering. The proposed mechanism explains superconductivity in other unconventional superconductors, and provides guidance in the search for new high-temperature superconductors.
A fundamental connection between superconductivity and quantum spin fluctuations in underdoped cuprates, is revealed. A variational calculation shows that {\em Cooper pair hopping} strongly reduces the local magnetization $m_0$. This effect pertains to recent neutron scattering and muon spin rotation measurements in which $m_0$ varies weakly with hole doping in the poorly conducting regime, but drops precipitously above the onset of superconductivity.
The relevance of magnetism for the mechanism responsible for high-temperature superconductivity remains an open and still interesting issue. The observation by inelastic neutron scattering of strong antiferromagnetic dynamical correlations in superconducting cuprates is discussed in relation to the unusual physical properties of the cuprates as well as in relation to the superconducting pairing.
Within the t-t'-J model, the charge asymmetry in superconductivity of hole- and electron-doped cuprates is studied based on the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism. It is shown that superconductivity appears over a narrow range of doping in electron-doped cuprates, and the superconducting transition temperature displays the same kind of the doping controlled behavior that is observed in the hole-doped case. The phase diagram of order parameters for pairing and phase coherence in hole-doped cuprates is discussed. By examining carefully some recent inelastic neutron scattering data obtained on hole-doped cuprates and heavy fermion compound UPd2Al3 in which the superconductivity is mediated by spin fluctuations, we conclude that the coherent gap in hole-doped cuprates has most likely the magnetic origin and scales with Tc, on average, as 2Dc/kBTc = 5.4. We discuss a model of the superconductivity in hole-doped cuprates and the symmetries of two order parameters.
We present experimental data obtained by different techniques. Some of them are not easy to explain by any theoretical model presented in the literature. However, a MCS model of the superconductivity in hole-doped cuprates, proposed in our previous work, is capable to explain them. Thus, we present an evidence in favor of the MCS model.
On the basis of an analysis of theoretical and numerical studies of model systems, and of experiments on superconductivity in doped C$_{60}$, polyacenes, and the cuprate high temperature superconductors, we propose that a purely electronic mechanism of superconductivity requires structures at an intermediate or mesoscale. Specifically, we address the crucial question of how high temperature superconducting pairing on the mesoscale can arise from purely repulsive electronic interactions.
A simple microscopic principle of `Valence bond (nearest neighbor singlet) amplitude maximization '(VBAM) is shown to be present in undoped and optimally doped cuprates and unify the very different orderings such as antiferromagnetism in the Mott insulator and the robust superconductivity accompanied by an enhanced charge and stripe correlations in the optimally doped cuprates. VBAM is nearly synonymous with the energy minimization principle. It is implicit in the RVB theory and thereby makes the predictions of RVB mean field theory of superconductivity qualitatively correct.
A hypothetical layered oxide La_2NiMO_6 where NiO_2 and MO_2 planes alternate along the c-axis of ABO_3 perovskite lattice is considered theoretically. Here, M denotes a trivalent cation Al, Ga,... such that MO_2 planes are insulating and suppress the c-axis charge transfer. We predict that correlated e_g electrons in the NiO_2 planes develop a planar x^2-y^2 orbital order driven by the reduced dimensionality and further supported by epitaxial strain from the substrate. The main purpose of this brief review is to present a sketch of the mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity based mainly on tunneling measurements in cuprates. In the review, we shall mostly discuss tunneling spectroscopy in Bi2212. Analysis of the data shows that the Cooper pairs in cuprates are topological excitations (e.g. quasi-one dimensional bisolitons, discrete breathers etc.), and the phase coherence among the Cooper pairs appears due to spin fluctuations.
Within the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism, the effect of the pressure on superconductivity in doped two-leg ladder cuprates is studied. It is shown that the superconducting transition temperature in doped two-leg ladder cuprate superconductors increases with increasing pressure in the underpressure regime, and reaches a maximum in the optimal pressure, then decreases in the overpressure regime. The theory of hole superconductivity proposes that MgB_2, and the high Tc cuprates, and the 'conventional superconductors', and all other superconductors, are driven by the same physical mechanism, which is not the electron-phonon interaction. That mechanism, hole undressing, evidence supporting it, and predictions for MgB_2, are briefly reviewed.
We make use of the S=1 pseudospin formalism to describe the charge degree of freedom in a model high-$T_c$ cuprate with the on-site Hilbert space reduced to the three effective valence centers, nominally Cu$^{1+,\,2+,\,3+}$. Starting with a parent cuprate as an analogue of the quantum paramagnet ground state and using the Schwinger boson technique we found the pseudospin spectrum and conditions for the pseudomagnon condensation with phase transition to a superconducting state.
The nature of the normal state and the mechanism of superconductivity in two families of high-temperature superconductors, cuprates and pnictides, remain a matter of intense discussions. According to band-structure calculations, confirmed by ARPES data, the electronic structure of pnictides differs considerably from that of cuprates. We report a tunneling study between Pr_2-xCe_xCuO_{4-delta} (PCCO) and Lead as a function of doping, temperature and magnetic field. The temperature dependence of the gap follows the BCS prediction. Our data fits a nonmonotonic d-wave order parameter for the whole doping range studied. From our data we are able to conclude that the electron-doped cuprate PCCO is a weak coupling, BCS, dirty superconductor.
We develop Ginzburg-Landau approach to the problem of superconducting pairing with large momentum under screened Coulomb repulsion (eta_K-pairing). Two-component order parameter arising in this scheme can be associated with charge and orbital current degrees of freedom of the relative motion of eta_K-pair corresponding to superconducting and orbital antiferromagnetic ordered states, respectively. All basic features of the phase diagram of cuprate superconductors result directly from the eta_K-pairing concept.
Kinematic constraint arising in the case of superconducting pairing with large momentum results in a cutoff of the screened Coulomb potential excluding large momentum transfers. This leads to a pairing potential oscillating in the real space that ensures a rise of bound singlet pairs. Recent experiments in the cuprates have seen evidence of a transient superconducting state upon optical excitation polarized along the c-axis [R. Mankowsky et al., Nature 516, 71 (2014)]. Motivated by these experiments we propose an extension of the single-layer $t-J-V$ model of cuprates to three dimensions in order to study the effects of inter-plane tunneling on the competition between superconductivity and bond density wave order. We find that an optical pump can suppress the charge order and simultaneously enhance superconductivity, due to the inherent competition between the two. We also …
The properties of the superconducting ferromagnets RuSr2(Gd/Eu)Cu2O8 and RuSr2(Ln/Ce)2Cu2O10 are reviewed. The problem of coexistence and competition between magnetic and superconducting states is discussed. A model of phase separation into ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic structures is proposed.
Superlattices of the repeated structure La(1.56)Sr(0.44)CuO(4)/La(2)CuO(4) (LSCO-LCO), where none of the constituents is superconducting, show a superconducting transition of T_c \simeq 25 K. In order to elucidate the nature of the superconducting state we have performed a low-energy muSR study. By applying a magnetic field parallel (Meissner state) and perpendicular (vortex state) to the film planes, we could show that superconductivity is sheet like, resulting in a very anisotropic superconducting state. The theory of hole superconductivity explains high temperature superconductivity in cuprates as driven by pairing of hole carriers in oxygen $pπ$ orbitals in the highly negatively charged $Cu-O$ planes. We argue that the Fermi arc observed in angle resolved photoemission measurements in underdoped cuprates can be understood as a consequence of inelastic scattering in a d-wave superconductor. We analyze this phenomenon in the context of strong coupling Eliashberg theory, deriving a `single lifetime' model for describing the temperature evolution of the spectral gap as measured by single particle probes such as photoemission and tunneling.
We discuss the possibility that the electron may be fractionalized in some quantum phases of matter in two or higher dimensions. We review the theory of such phases, and show that their effective theory is a $Z_2$ gauge theory. These phases may be characterized theoretically through the notion of topological order. We discuss the appeal of fractionalization ideas for building theories of the cuprates, and possible ways of testing these ideas.
Motivated by the energetic advantage of achieving coherent enhancement of effective spin-dependent interactions through approximate nesting, we propose specific forms of spin ordering, whose form varies over the Fermi surface, for the cuprate superconductors. Competing "spin-orbit" orderings involving order parameters in spatial $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{xy}$ waves at commensurate and incommensurate wavevectors, phase separated in momentum space, support behavior suggestive of observed phenomena. Using a dynamical cluster quantum Monte Carlo approximation, we investigate the effect of local disorder on the stability of d-wave superconductivity including the effect of electronic correlations in both particle-particle and particle-hole channels. With increasing impurity potential, we find an initial rise of the critical temperature due to an enhancement of anti-ferromagnetic spin correlations, followed by a decrease of Tc due to scattering from impurity-induced moments and ordinary pairbreaking. Strong electron-phonon interactions in cuprates and other high-temperature superconductors have gathered support over the last decade in a large number of experiments. Here I briefly introduce the Froehlich-Coulomb multi-polaron model of high-temperature superconductivity, which includes strong on-site repulsive correlations and the long-range Coulomb and electron-phonon (e-ph) interactions. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and high resolution X-ray diffraction are combined to study the interplay between electronic and lattice structures in controlling the superconductivity in cuprates with a model charge-compensated CaxLa1-xBa1.75-xLa0.25+xCu3Oy (0<x<0.5, y=7.13) system. In spite of a large change in Tc, the doped holes, determined by the Cu L and O K XAS, hardly show any variation with the x. A mechanism of d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductivity is proposed for the high-T_c cuprates based on a spin texture with non-zero topological density induced by doped holes through Zhang-Rice singlet formation. The pairing interaction arises from the magnetic Lorentz force like interaction between the holes and the spin textures. The stability of the pairing state against the vortex-vortex interaction and the Coulomb repulsion is examined. The mechanism suggests appearance of a p-wave pairing component by introducing anisotropy in the CuO_2 plane.

Besides superconductivity, copper-oxide high temperature superconductors are susceptible to other types of ordering. We use scanning tunneling microscopy and resonant elastic x-ray scattering measurements to establish the formation of charge ordering in the high-temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x. Depending on the hole concentration, the charge ordering in this system occurs with the same period as those found in Y-based or La-based cuprates, and displays the analogous competition with superconductivity. The recently discovered structural reconstruction in the cuprate superlattice (SrCuO$_2$)$_n$/(SrTiO$_3$)$_2$ has been investigated across the critical value of $n=5$ using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). We find that at the critical value of $n$, the cuprate layer remains largely in the bulk-like two-dimensional structure with a minority of Cu plaquettes being reconstructed. Using variational cluster perturbation theory we study the competition between d-wave superconductivity (dSC) and antiferromagnetism (AF) in the the t-t'-t''-U Hubbard model. Large scale computer calculations reproduce the overall ground state phase diagram of the high-temperature superconductors as well as the one-particle excitation spectra for both hole- and electron-doping. We identify clear signatures of the Mott gap as well as of AF and of dSC that should be observable in photoemission experiments.
Using high resolution angle-resolved photoemission data in conjunction with that from neutron and other probes, we show that electron-phonon (el-ph) coupling is strong in cuprates superconductors and it plays an important role in pairing. We explain the effects of superconductivity on the incommensurate magnetic response $χ''(q,ω)$ observed in inelastic neutron scattering measurements on La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$. We show that a spin-fermion model correctly describes the frequency and momentum dependent changes of $χ''$ in the superconducting phase. We find these changes are generic features of an incommensurate spin structure and the d-wave symmetry of the superconducting gap and are thus expected for all cuprates with an incommensurate magnetic response. The third moment frequency sum rule for the density-density correlation function is rederived in the presence of Umklapp processes. Upper and lower bounds on the electron-electron Coulomb energy are derived in two-dimensional and three-dimensional media, and the Umklapp processes are shown to be crucial in determining the spectrum of the density fluctuations (especially for the two-dimensional systems). We present a comparative study of magnetic excitations in the first two Ruddlesden-Popper members of the Hg-family of high-temperature superconducting cuprates, which are chemically nearly identical and have the highest critical temperature ($T_\mathrm{c}$) among all cuprate families. Our inelastic photon scattering experiments reveal that the two compounds' paramagnon spectra are nearly identical apart from an energy scale factor of $\sim130\%$ that matches the ratio of $T_\mathrm{c}$'s, as expected in magnetic Cooper pairing theories. We suggest that the high temperature superconductivity in cuprate compounds may emerge due to interaction between copper-oxygen layers mediated by in-plane plasmons. The strength of the interaction is determined by the c-axis geometry and by the ab-plane optical properties. Without making reference to any particular in-plane mechanism of superconductivity, we show that the interlayer interaction favors spontaneous appearance of the superconductivity in the layers. We present a phenomenological model of high-Tc superconductivity in hole-doped cuprates: a Magnetic Coupling between Stripes (MCS) model. The MCS model is based upon experimental facts, namely, the presence of (i) stripes, (ii) spin fluctuations, and (iii) two order parameters (for pairing and long-range phase coherence) in hole-doped cuprates. We discuss also the superconductivity in electron-doped cuprates.
Based on recent magnetic-quantum-oscillation, ARPES, neutron-scattering and other data, we propose that superconductivity in the cuprates occurs via a convenient matching of the spatial distribution of incommensurate spin fluctuations to the amplitude and phase of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ Cooper-pair wavefunction; this establishes a robust causal relationship between the lengthscale of the fluctuations and the superconducting coherence length. We propose a phenomenological understanding of the recently discovered weak Mott insulator in the moiré superlattice of twisted bilayer graphene, especially the emergent superconductivity at low temperature within the weak Mott insulator phase, namely while lowering temperature, the longitudinal resistivity first grows below temperature $T_m$, but then rapidly drops to zero at even lower temperature $T_c$. One type of order that has been observed to compete with superconductivity in cuprates involves alternating charge and antiferromagnetic stripes. Recent neutron scattering studies indicate that the magnetic excitation spectrum of a stripe-ordered sample is very similar to that observed in superconducting samples. We argue that the pseudogap phase may be an attribute of the non-BCS pairing of quantum-critical, diffusive fermions near the antiferromagnetic quantum critical point. We derive and solve a set of three coupled Eliashberg-type equations for spin-mediated pairing and show that in some $T$ range below the pairing instability, there is no feedback from superconductivity on fermionic excitations, and fermions remain diffusive despite of the pairing. The Kohn-Luttinger mechanism for superconductivity is investigated in a model for the electron doped cuprates. The symmetry of the order parameter of the superconducting phase is determined as a function of the geometry of the Fermi surface together with the structure of the electron-hole susceptibility. It is found to remain d_{x^2-y^2} wave within a large doping range. The shape of the gap anisotropy evolves with doping, with the maximum gap moving away from (pi ,0), in good agreement with recent experiments. As the shift of the maximum increases, a crossover to d_{xy}-symmetry is found.
