We develop a general approach to finding combinatorial models for cluster algebras. The approach is to construct a labeled graph called a framework. When a framework is constructed with certain properties, the result is a model incorporating information about exchange matrices, principal coefficients, g-vectors, and g-vector fans. The idea behind frameworks arises from Cambrian combinatorics and sortable elements, and in this paper, we use sortable elements to construct a framework for any cluster algebra with an acyclic initial exchange matrix. This Cambrian framework yields a model of the entire exchange graph when the cluster algebra is of finite type. Outside of finite type, the Cambrian framework models only part of the exchange graph. In a forthcoming paper, we extend the Cambrian construction to produce a complete framework for a cluster algebra whose associated Cartan matrix is of affine type.
Lots of research focuses on the combinatorics behind various bases of cluster algebras. This paper studies the natural basis of a type A cluster algebra, which consists of all cluster monomials. We introduce a new kind of combinatorial formulas for the cluster monomials in terms of the so-called globally compatible collections. We give bijective proofs of these formulas by comparing with the well-known combinatorial models of the T-paths and of the perfect matchings in a snake diagram. For cluster variables of a type A cluster algebra, we give a bijection that relates our new formula with the …
We show that the # product of binary trees introduced by Aval and Viennot [arXiv:0912.0798] is in fact defined at the level of the free associative algebra, and can be extended to most of the classical combinatorial Hopf algebras.
We construct explicit polynomial realizations of some combinatorial Hopf algebras based on various kind of trees or forests, and some more general classes of graphs, ranging from the Connes-Kreimer algebra to an algebra of labelled forests isomorphic to the Hopf algebra of parking functions, and to a new noncommutative algebra based on endofunctions admitting many interesting subalgebras and quotients.
Partial multivariate Bell polynomials have been defined by E.T. Bell in 1934. These polynomials have numerous applications in Combinatorics, Analysis, Algebra, Probabilities, etc. Many of the formulae on Bell polynomials involve combinatorial objects (set partitions, set partitions in lists, permutations, etc.). So it seems natural to investigate analogous formulae in some combinatorial Hopf algebras with bases indexed by these objects. The algebra of symmetric functions is the most famous example of a combinatorial Hopf algebra. In a first time, we show that most of the results on Bell polyno…
There is a very natural and well-behaved Hopf algebra morphism from quasisymmetric functions to peak algebra, which we call it Theta map. This paper focuses on generalizing the peak algebra by constructing generalized Theta maps for an arbitrary combinatorial Hopf algebra. The image of Theta maps lies in the odd Hopf subalgebras, so we present a strategy to find odd Hopf subalgebra of any combinatorial Hopf algebra. We also give a combinatorial description of a family of Theta maps for Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations $\operatorname{\mathsf{\mathfrak{S}Sym}}$ whose images are …
One of the main virtues of trees is to represent formal solutions of various functional equations which can be cast in the form of fixed point problems. Basic examples include differential equations and functional (Lagrange) inversion in power series rings. When analyzed in terms of combinatorial Hopf algebras, the simplest examples yield interesting algebraic identities or enumerative results.
We present two hypermatrix formulations of the Cayley Hamilton theorem. One of the proposed formulation naturally extends to hypermatrices the combinatorial interpretations of the classical Cayley Hamilton theorem. We conclude by discussing an application of the theorem to computing graph invariants which distinguish some non-isomorphic graphs with isospectral adjacency matrices.
Motivated by work of Buch on set-valued tableaux in relation to the K-theory of the Grassmannian, Lam and Pylyavskyy studied six combinatorial Hopf algebras that can be thought of as K-theoretic analogues of the Hopf algebras of symmetric functions, quasisymmetric functions, noncommutative symmetric functions, and of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations. They described the bialgebra structure in all cases that were not yet known but left open the question of finding explicit formulas for the antipode maps. We give combinatorial formulas for the antipode map for the K-theoretic…
We give a new construction of a Hopf subalgebra of the Hopf algebra of Free quasi-symmetric functions whose bases are indexed by objects belonging to the Baxter combinatorial family (i.e. Baxter permutations, pairs of twin binary trees, etc.). This construction relies on the definition of the Baxter monoid, analog of the plactic monoid and the sylvester monoid, and on a Robinson-Schensted-like insertion algorithm. The algebraic properties of this Hopf algebra are studied. This Hopf algebra appeared for the first time in the work of Reading [Lattice congruences, fans and Hopf algebras, Journal …
We propose several constructions of commutative or cocommutative Hopf algebras based on various combinatorial structures, and investigate the relations between them. A commutative Hopf algebra of permutations is obtained by a general construction based on graphs, and its non-commutative dual is realized in three different ways, in particular as the Grossman-Larson algebra of heap ordered trees. Extensions to endofunctions, parking functions, set compositions, set partitions, planar binary trees and rooted forests are discussed. Finally, we introduce one-parameter families interpolating between…
We consider two families of polynomials that play the same role in the Temperley Lieb algebra of a Coxeter group as the Kazhdan Lusztig and R polynomials play in the Hecke algebra of the group. We study these polynomials from a combinatorial point of view. More precisely we obtain recursions, non recursive formulas, symmetry properties, and expressions for the constant terms, of these polynomials.
In a first part, we formalize the construction of combinatorial Hopf algebras from plactic-like monoids using polynomial realizations. Thank to this construction we reveal a lattice structure on those combinatorial Hopf algebras. As an application, we construct a new combinatorial Hopf algebra on binary trees with multiplicities and use it to prove a hook length formula for those trees. Dans une première partie, nous formalisons la construction d'algèbres de Hopf combinatoires à partir d'une réalisation polynomiale et de monoïdes de type monoïde plaxique. Grâce à cette construction, nous metto…
We consider a Hopf algebra of simplicial complexes and provide a cancellation-free formula for its antipode. We then obtain a family of combinatorial Hopf algebras by defining a family of characters on this Hopf algebra. The characters of these combinatorial Hopf algebras give rise to symmetric functions that encode information about colorings of simplicial complexes and their $f$-vectors. We also use characters to give a generalization of Stanley's $(-1)$-color theorem. A $q$-analog version of this family of characters is also studied.
Let X be an ordered alphabet. Lie_2(n) (and P_2(n) respectively) are the multilinear parts of the free Lie algebra (and the free Poisson algebra respectively) on X with a pair of compatible Lie brackets. In this paper, we prove the dimension formulas for these two algebras conjectured by B. Feigin by constructing bases for Lie_2(n) (and P_2(n)) from combinatorial objects. We also define a complementary space Eil_2(n) to Lie_2(n), give a pairing between Lie_2(n) and Eil_2(n), and show that the pairing is perfect.
Mayer's theory of cluster integrals allows one to write the partition function of a gas model as a generating function of weighted graphs. Recently, Labelle, Leroux and Ducharme have studied the graph weights arising from the one-dimensional hard-core gas model and noticed that the sum of the weights over all connected graphs with $n$ vertices is $(-n)^{n-1}$. This is, up to sign, the number of rooted Cayley trees on $n$ vertices and the authors asked for a combinatorial explanation. The main goal of this article is to provide such an explanation.
We describe a method for constructing characters of combinatorial Hopf algebras by means of integrals over certain polyhedral cones. This is based on ideas from resurgence theory, in particular on the construction of well-behaved averages induced by diffusion processes on the real line. We give several interpretations and proofs of the main result in terms of noncommutative symmetric and quasisymmetric functions, as well as generalizations involving matrix quasi-symmetric functions. The interpretation of noncommutative symmetric functions as alien operators in resurgence theory is also discuss…
We give a new construction of a Hopf algebra defined first by Reading whose bases are indexed by objects belonging to the Baxter combinatorial family (i.e., Baxter permutations, pairs of twin binary trees, etc.). Our construction relies on the definition of the Baxter monoid, analog of the plactic monoid and the sylvester monoid, and on a Robinson-Schensted-like correspondence and insertion algorithm. Indeed, the Baxter monoid leads to the definition of a lattice structure over pairs of twin binary trees and the definition of a Hopf algebra. The algebraic properties of this Hopf algebra are st…
A general lattice theoretic construction of Reading constructs Hopf subalgebras of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra (MR) of permutations. The products and coproducts of these Hopf subalgebras are defined extrinsically in terms of the embedding in MR. The goal of this paper is to find an intrinsic combinatorial description of a particular one of these Hopf subalgebras. This Hopf algebra has a natural basis given by permutations that we call Pell permutations. The Pell permutations are in bijection with combinatorial objects that we call sashes, that is, tilings of a 1 by n rectangle with t…
We generalize Bruned et.al.'s notion of translation in geometric and branched rough paths to a notion of translation in rough paths over any combinatorial Hopf algebra. We show that this notion of translation is equivalent to two bialgebras being in cointeraction, subject to certain additional conditions. We argue that reformulating translations in terms of substitutions, provides simpler conditions for the cointeraction formulation. For the special case where the translation can be obtained from a product, we show how to obtain a description of the dual coaction. As a concrete example, we des…
We extend to several combinatorial Hopf algebras the endomorphism of symmetric functions sending the first power-sum to zero and leaving the other ones invariant. As a transformation of alphabets, this is the (1-E)-transform, where E is the exponential alphabet, whose elementary symmetric functions are e_n=1/n!. In the case of noncommutative symmetric functions, we recover Schocker's idempotents for derangement numbers [Discr. Math. 269 (2003), 239]. From these idempotents, we construct subalgebras of the descent algebras analogous to the peak algebras and study their representation theory. Th…
This is a detailed survey -- with rigorous and self-contained proofs -- of some of the basics of elementary combinatorics and algebra, including the properties of finite sums, binomial coefficients, permutations and determinants. It is entirely expository (and written to a large extent as a repository for folklore proofs); no new results (and few, if any, new proofs) appear.
We construct a new bigraded Hopf algebra whose bases are indexed by square matrices with entries in the alphabet $\{0, 1, ..., k\}$, $k \geq 1$, without null rows or columns. This Hopf algebra generalizes the one of permutations of Malvenuto and Reutenauer, the one of $k$-colored permutations of Novelli and Thibon, and the one of uniform block permutations of Aguiar and Orellana. We study the algebraic structure of our Hopf algebra and show, by exhibiting multiplicative bases, that it is free. We moreover show that it is self-dual and admits a bidendriform bialgebra structure. Besides, as a Ho…
We briefly review the rôle played by algebraic structures like combinatorial Hopf algebras in the renormalizability of (noncommutative) quantum field theory. After sketching the commutative case, we analyze the noncommutative Grosse-Wulkenhaar model.
We introduce a new family of noncommutative analogues of the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. Our construction relies upon Tevlin's bases and simple q-deformations of the classical combinatorial Hopf algebras. We connect our new Hall-Littlewood functions to permutation tableaux, and also give an exact formula for the q-enumeration of permutation tableaux of a fixed shape. This gives an explicit formula for: the steady state probability of each state in the partially asymmetric exclusion process (PASEP); the polynomial enumerating permutations with a fixed set of weak excedances according t…
Fomin and Zelevinsky show that a certain two-parameter family of rational recurrence relations, here called the (b,c) family, possesses the Laurentness property: for all b,c, each term of the (b,c) sequence can be expressed as a Laurent polynomial in the two initial terms. In the case where the positive integers b,c satisfy bc<4, the recurrence is related to the root systems of finite-dimensional rank 2 Lie algebras; when bc>4, the recurrence is related to Kac-Moody rank 2 Lie algebras of hyperbolic type. Here we investigate the borderline cases bc=4, corresponding to Kac-Moody Lie algebras of…
We construct Hopf algebras whose elements are representations of combinatorial automorphism groups, by generalising a theorem of Zelevinsky on Hopf algebras of representations of wreath products. As an application we attach symmetric functions to representations of graph automorphism groups, generalising and refining Stanley's chromatic symmetric function.
We develop an elementary formula for certain non-trivial elements of upper cluster algebras. These elements have positive coefficients. We show that when the cluster algebra is acyclic these elements form a basis. Using this formula, we show that each non-acyclic skew-symmetric cluster algebra of rank 3 is properly contained in its upper cluster algebra.
In this note, we find a combinatorial identity which is closely related to the multi-dimensional integral $γ_{m}$ in the study of divisor functions. As an application, we determine the finite dual of the group algebra of infinite dihedral group.
We suggest the point of view that the Schubert classes of the affine Grassmannian of a simple algebraic group should be considered as Schur-positive symmetric functions. In particular, we give a geometric explanation of the Schur positivity of k-Schur functions (at t = 1). We also put this in the context of the theory of combinatorial Hopf algebras.
A combinatorial study discloses two surjective morphisms between generalized shuffle algebras and algebras generated by the colored Hurwitz polyzêtas. The combinatorial aspects of the products and co-products involved in these algebras will be examined.
Richard Stanley played a crucial role, through his work and his students, in the development of the relatively new area known as combinatorial representation theory. In the early stages, he has the merit to have pointed out to combinatorialists the potential that representation theory has for applications of combinatorial methods. Throughout his distinguished career, he wrote significant articles which touch upon various combinatorial aspects related to representation theory (of Lie algebras, the symmetric group, etc.). I describe some of Richard's contributions involving Lie algebras, as well…
We develop a theory of multigraded (i.e., $N^l$-graded) combinatorial Hopf algebras modeled on the theory of graded combinatorial Hopf algebras developed by Aguiar, Bergeron, and Sottile [Compos. Math. 142 (2006), 1--30]. In particular we introduce the notion of canonical $k$-odd and $k$-even subalgebras associated with any multigraded combinatorial Hopf algebra, extending simultaneously the work of Aguiar et al. and Ehrenborg. Among our results are specific categorical results for higher level quasisymmetric functions, several basis change formulas, and a generalization of the descents-to-pea…
We present an algebraic framework for the analysis of combinatorial games. This framework embraces the classical theory of partizan games as well as a number of misere games, comply-constrain games, and card games that have been studied more recently. It focuses on the construction of the quotient monoid of a game, an idea that has been successively applied to several classes of games.
We revisit the geometric description of cluster categories in type E in terms of colored diagonals in a polygon and generalize it to the case of m-cluster categories. As an application, we relate colored diagonals in a polygon to semi-standard Young tableaux, in type E_6,E_7,E_8. This provides a new compatibility description of semi--standard Young tableaux in Grassmannian cluster algebras in type E_6, E_8 and in a sub-cluster algebra of type E_7.
In this work a combinatorial description is provided of a Faa di Bruno type Hopf algebra which naturally appears in the context of Fliess operators in nonlinear feedback control theory. It is a connected graded commutative and non-cocommutative Hopf algebra defined on rooted circle trees. A cancellation free forest formula for its antipode is given.
We study the algebraic rank of a divisor on a graph, an invariant defined using divisors on algebraic curves dual to the graph. We prove it satisfies the Riemann-Roch formula, a specialization property, and the Clifford inequality. We prove that it is at most equal to the (usual) combinatorial rank, and that equality holds in many cases, though not in general.
We extend a classical construction on symmetric functions, the superization process, to several combinatorial Hopf algebras, and obtain analogs of the hook-content formula for the (q,t)-specializations of various bases. Exploiting the dendriform structures yields in particular (q,t)-analogs of the Bjorner-Wachs q-hook-length formulas for binary trees, and similar formulas for plane trees.
Let I=(x^{v_1},...,x^{v_q} be a square-free monomial ideal of a polynomial ring K[x_1,...,x_n] over an arbitrary field K and let A be the incidence matrix with column vectors {v_1},...,{v_q}. We will establish some connections between algebraic properties of certain graded algebras associated to I and combinatorial optimization properties of certain polyhedrons and clutters associated to A and I respectively. Some applications to Rees algebras and combinatorial optimization are presented. We study a conjecture of Conforti and Cornuéjols using an algebraic approach.
Quasi-triangular Hopf algebras were introduced by Drinfel'd in his construction of solutions to the Yang--Baxter Equation. This algebra is built upon $\mathcal{U}_h(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$, the quantized universal enveloping algebra of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_2$. In this paper, combinatorial structure in $\mathcal{U}_h(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ is elicited, and used to assist in highly intricate calculations in this algebra. To this end, a combinatorial methodology is formulated for straightening algebraic expressions to a canonical form in the case $n=1$. We apply this formalism to the quasi-triangu…
Motivated by work of Buch on set-valued tableaux in relation to the K-theory of the Grassmannian, we study six combinatorial Hopf algebras. These Hopf algebras can be thought of as K-theoretic analogues of the by now classical ``square'' of Hopf algebras consisting of symmetric functions, quasisymmetric functions, noncommutative symmetric functions and the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations. In addition, we develop a theory of set-valued P-partitions and study three new families of symmetric functions which are weight generating functions of reverse plane partitions, weak set-va…
Enomoto showed for finite dimensional algebras that the classification of exact structures on the category of finitely generated projective modules can be reduced to the classification of 2-regular simple modules. In this article, we give a combinatorial classification of 2-regular simple modules for Nakayama algebras and we use this classification to answer several natural questions such as when there is a unique exact structure on the category of finitely generated projective modules for Nakayama algebras. We also classify 1-regular simple modules, quasi-hereditary Nakayama algebras and Naka…
Hecke algebras are beautiful q-extensions of Coxeter groups. In this paper, we prove several results on their characters, with an emphasis on characters induced from trivial and sign representations of parabolic subalgebras. While most of the results in type A are known, our proofs are of a combinatorial nature, and generalize to (partial) results in types B and C. We also present complete descriptions of such characters for type I.
We generalize the Hopf algebras of free quasisymmetric functions, quasisymmetric functions, noncommutative symmetric functions, and symmetric functions to certain representations of the category of all finite Coxeter systems and its dual category. We investigate their connections with the representation theory of 0-Hecke algebras of finite Coxeter systems. Restricted to type B and D we obtain dual graded modules and comodules over the corresponding Hopf algebras in type A.
We introduce partial $r$-Bell polynomials in three combinatorial Hopf algebras. We prove a factorization formula for the generating functions which is a consequence of the Zassenhauss formula.
We develop a simple and unified approach to investigate several aspects of the cluster statistics of random expansive (multi-)sets. In particular, we determine the limiting distribution of the size of the smallest and largest clusters, we establish all moments of the distribution of the number of clusters, and we prove a local limit theorem for that distribution. Our proofs combine effectively two simple ingredients: an application of the saddle-point method through the well-known framework of $H$-admissibility, and an ingenious idea by Erdős and Lehner that utilizes the elementary inclusion/e…
We define in this paper several Hopf algebras describing the combinatorics of the so-called multi-scale renormalization in quantum field theory. After a brief recall of the main mathematical features of multi-scale renormalization, we define assigned graphs, that are graphs with appropriate decorations for the multi-scale framework. We then define Hopf algebras on these assigned graphs and on the Gallavotti-Nicolò trees, particular class of trees encoding the supplementary informations of the assigned graphs. Several morphisms between these combinatorial Hopf algebras and the Connes-Kreimer al…
We present a simple combinatorial model for the characters of the irreducible integrable highest weight modules for complex symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebras. This model can be viewed as a discrete counterpart to the Littelmann path model. We describe crystal graphs and give a Littlewood-Richardson rule for decomposing tensor products of irreducible representations. The new model is based on the notion of a lambda-chain, which is a chain of positive roots defined by certain interlacing conditions.
The word problem for an arbitrary associative Rota-Baxter algebra is solved. This leads to a noncommutative generalization of the classical Spitzer identities. Links to other combinatorial aspects, particularly of interest in physics, are indicated.
