In this work we investigate the existence of weak solutions for steady flows of generalized incompressible and homogeneous viscous fluids. The problem is modeled by the steady case of the generalized Navier-Stokes equations, where the exponent $q$ that characterizes the flow depends on the space variable: $q=q(\mathbf{x})$. For the associated boundary-value problem we prove the existence of weak solutions for any variable exponent $q\geqα>\frac{2N}{N+2}$, where $α=\mathrm{ess}\inf q$. This work improves all the known existence results in the sense that the lowest possible bound of $q$ is attained and no other assumption on the regularity of $q$ is required.
We consider the barotropic Navier-Stokes system describing the motion of a compressible viscous fluid confined to a bounded domain driven by time periodic inflow/outflow boundary conditions. We show that the problem admits a time periodic solution in the class of weak solutions satisfying the energy inequality.
In the analysis of the long-time behaviour of two-dimensional incompressible viscous fluids, Oseen vortices play a major role as attractors of any homogeneous solution with integrable initial vorticity. As a first step in the study of the density-dependent case, the present paper establishes the asymptotic stability of Oseen vortices for slighty inhomogeneous fluids with respect to localized regular perturbations.
We consider a class of viscous fluids with a general monotone dependence of the viscous stress on the symmetric velocity gradient. We introduce the concept of dissipative solution to the associated initial boundary value problem inspired by the measure-valued solutions for the inviscid (Euler) system. We show the existence as well as the weak-strong uniqueness property in the class of dissipative solutions. Finally, the dissipative solution enjoying certain extra regularity coincides with a strong solution of the same problem.
We study an initial-boundary-value problem for time-dependent flows of heat-conducting viscous incompressible fluids in channel-like domains on a time interval $(0,T)$. For the parabolic system with strong nonlinearities and including the artificial (the so called "do nothing") boundary conditions, we prove the local in time existence, global uniqueness and smoothness of the solution on a time interval $(0,T^*)$, where $0< T^* \leq T$.
In this article, we study the long-time behavior of solutions of the two-dimensional fluid-rigid disk problem. The motion of the fluid is modeled by the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations, and the disk moves under the influence of the forces exerted by the viscous fluid. We first derive $L^p$-$L^q$ decay estimates for the linearized equations and compute the first term in the asymptotic expansion of the solutions of the linearized equations. We then apply these computations to derive time-decay estimates for the solutions to the full Navier-Stokes fluid-rigid disk system.
We consider the abstract initial value problem for the system of evolution equations which describe motion of incompressible viscous and heat-conductive fluids in a bounded domain. It is difficulty of our problem that we do not neglect the viscous dissipation function in contrast to the Boussinesq approximation. This problem has uniquely a mild solution locally in time for general initial data, and globally in time for small initial data. Moreover, a mild solution of this problem can be a strong or classical solution under appropriate assumptions for initial data. We prove the above properties…
We consider a boundary-value problem describing the steady motion of a two-component mixture of viscous compressible heat-conducting fluids in a bounded domain. We make no simplifying assumptions except for postulating the coincidence of phase temperatures (which is physically justified in certain situations), that is, we retain all summands in equations that are a natural generalization of the Navier-Stokes-Fourier model of the motion of a one-component medium. We prove the existence of weak generalized solutions of the problem.
The Navier-Stokes equations for compressible barotropic flow in the stationary three dimensional case are considered. It is assumed that a fluid occupies a bounded domain and satisfies the no-slip boundary condition. The existence of a weak solution under the assumption that the adiabatic exponent satisfies $γ>1$ is proved. These results cover the cases of monoatomic, diatomic, and polyatomic gases.
Using a simple and well-motivated modification of the stress-energy tensor for a viscous fluid proposed by Lichnerowicz, we prove that Einstein's equations coupled to a relativistic version of the Navier-Stokes equations are well-posed in a suitable Gevrey class if the fluid is incompressible and irrotational. These last two conditions are given an appropriate relativistic interpretation. The solutions enjoy the domain of dependence or finite propagation speed property. We also derive a full set of equations, describing a relativistic fluid that is not necessarily incompressible or irrotationa…
We investigate the instability and stability of some steady-states of a three-dimensional nonhomogeneous incompressible viscous flow driven by gravity in a bounded domain $Ω$ of class $C^2$. When the steady density is heavier with increasing height (i.e., the Rayleigh-Taylor steady-state), we show that the steady-state is linear unstable (i.e., the linear solution grows in time in $H^2$) by constructing a (standard) energy functional and exploiting the modified variational method. Then, by introducing a new energy functional and using a careful bootstrap argument, we further show that the stea…
We study the system of equations which describes barotropic (isentropic) flows of viscous compressible multi-fluids (mixtures of fluids). We study the relations between pressure, densities, concentrations, viscosities and other parameters of the flow and of the medium.
We introduce a new concept of dissipative varifold solution to models of two phase compressible viscous fluids. In contrast with the existing approach based on the Young measure description, the new formulation is variational combining the energy and momentum balance in a single inequality. We show the existence of dissipative varifold solutions for a large class of general viscous fluids with non--linear dependence of the viscous stress on the symmetric velocity gradient.
We extend the weak-strong uniqueness principle to general models of compressible viscous fluids near/on the vacuum. In particular, the physically relevant case of positive density with polynomial decay at infinity is considered.
In this work we will study the dynamics of a thin layer of a viscous fluid which is embedded in the interior of another viscous fluid. The resulting flow can be approximated by means of the solutions of a free boundary problem for the Stokes equation in which one of the unknowns is the shape of a curve which approximates the geometry of the thin layer of fluid. We also derive the equation yielding the thickness of this fluid. This model, that will be termed as the Geometric Free Boundary Problem, will be derived using matched asymptotic expansions. We will prove that the Geometric Free Boundar…
In this paper we consider the motion of a rigid body in a viscous incompressible fluid when some Navier slip conditions are prescribed on the body's boundary. The whole `viscous incompressible fluid + rigid body' system is assumed to occupy the full plane $\R^{2}$. We prove the existence of global-in-time weak solutions with constant non-zero circulation at infinity.
We consider the model of viscous compressible homogeneous multi-fluids with multiple velocities. We review different formulations of the model and the existence results for boundary value problems. We analyze crucial mathematical difficulties which arise during the proof of the existence theorems.
We study the problem of coupling Einstein's equations to a relativistic and physically well-motivated version of the Navier-Stokes equations. Under a natural evolution condition for the vorticity, we prove existence and uniqueness in a suitable Gevrey class if the fluid is incompressible, where this condition is given an appropriate relativistic interpretation, and show that the solutions enjoy the finite propagation speed property.
We consider the model of viscous compressible multi-fluids with multiple velocities. We review different formulations of the model and the existence results for boundary value problems. We analyze crucial mathematical difficulties which arise during the proof of the global existence theorems in 1D case.
We consider a boundary value problem for the system of equations describing the stationary motion of a viscous nonhomogeneous asymmetric fluid in a bounded planar domain having a $C^2$ boundary. We use a stream-function formulation after the manner of N. N. Frolov [Math. Notes, \textbf{53}(5-6), 650--656, 1993] in which the fluid density depends on the stream-function by means of another function determined by the boundary conditions. This allows for dropping some of the equations, most notably the continuity equation. With a fixed point argument we show the existence of solutions to the resul…
In this article we derive rigorously a nonlinear, steady, bifurcation through spectral bifurcation (i.e., eigenvalues of the linearized equation crossing the imaginary axis) for a class of hyperbolic-parabolic model in a strip. This is related to "cellular instabilities" occuring in detonation and MHD. Our results extend to multiple dimensions the results of Franz Achleitner and Peter Szmolyan (Saddle-node bifurcation of viscous profiles) on 1D steady bifurcation of viscous shock profiles; en passant, changing to an appropriate moving coordinate frame, we recover and somewhat sharpen results o…
We prove the existence of a semiflow selection with range the space of càglàd, i.e. left--continuous and having right--hand limits functions defined on $[0,\infty)$ and taking values in a Hilbert space. Afterwards, we apply this abstract result to the system arising from a compressible viscous fluid with a barotropic pressure of the type $a\varrho^γ$, $γ\geq 1$, with a viscous stress tensor being a nonlinear function of the symmetric velocity gradient.
We prove the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to the steady isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with inflow boundary conditions for density and mixed boundary conditions for the velocity around a shear flow. In particular, the Dirichlet boundary condition on inflow and outflow part of the boundary while the full Navier boundary conditions on the wall $Γ_{0}$ for the velocity filed are considered. For our result, there are no restrictions on the amplitude of friction coefficients $α$, and the appropriately large hypothesis for the viscous coefficients $μ$ is enough. One …
The existence of weak solutions to the "viscous incompressible fluid + rigid body" system with Navier slip-with-friction conditions in a 3D bounded domain has been recently proved by Gérard-Varet and Hillairet in \cite{exi:GeH}. In 2D for a fluid alone (without any rigid body) it is well-known since Leray that weak solutions are unique, continuous in time with $ L^{2} $ regularity in space and satisfy the energy equality. In this paper we prove that these properties also hold for the 2D "viscous incompressible fluid + rigid body" system.
In this work we will focus on the existence of weak solutions for a system describing a general compressible viscous fluid in the case of the pressure being a linear function of the density and the viscous stress tensor being a non-linear function of the symmetric velocity gradient. More precisely, we will first prove the existence of dissipative solutions and study under which conditions it is possible to guarantee the existence of weak solutions.
We show that a steady-state solution ${\bf U}$ to the system of equations of a Navier-Stokes flow past a rotating body is nonlinearly unstable if the associated linear operator $\cal L$ has a part of the spectrum in the half-plane $\{λ\in\mathbb C;\ {\rm Re}\, λ>0\}$. Our result does not follow from known methods, %on spectral instability, mainly because the basic nonlinear operator is not bounded in the same space in which the instability is studied. As an auxiliary result of independent interest, we also show that the uniform growth bound of the $C_0$--semigroup ${\rm e}^{{\cal L} t}$ is equ…
In this article, we consider Leray solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in the exterior of one obstacle in 3D and we study the asymptotic behavior of these solutions when the obstacle shrinks to a curve or to a surface. In particular, we will prove that a solid curve has no effect on the motion of a viscous fluid, so it is a removable singularity for these equations.
This paper considers the dynamical behavior of solutions of constitutive systems for 1D compressible viscous and heat-conducting micropolar fluids. With proper constraints on initial data, we prove the existence of global attractors in generalized Sobolev spaces $H^{(1)}_δ$ and $H^{(2)}_δ$.
We propose a new approach to models of general compressible viscous fluids based on the concept of dissipative solutions. These are weak solutions satisfying the underlying equations modulo a defect measure. A dissipative solution coincides with the strong solution as long as the latter exists (weak-strong uniqueness) and they solve the problem in the classical sense as soon as they are smooth (compatibility). We consider general models of compressible viscous fluids with non-linear viscosity tensor and non-homogeneous boundary conditions, for which the problem of existence of global-in-time w…
We consider a stress-energy tensor describing a pure radiation viscous fluid with conformal symmetry introduced in arXiv:1708.06255. We show that the corresponding equations of motions are causal in Minkowski background and also when coupled to Einstein's equations, and solve the associated initial-value problem.
We consider the initial boundary value problem for a model system of one-dimensional equations which describe unsteady polytropic motions of a mixture of viscous compressible fluids. We prove the global existence and uniqueness theorem for the strong solution without restrictions on the structure of the viscosity matrix except standard properties of symmetry and positiveness.
In [F. Jiang, S. Jiang, On instability and stability of three-dimensional gravity driven viscous flows in a bounded domain, Adv. Math., 264 (2014) 831--863], Jiang et.al. investigated the instability of Rayleigh--Taylor steady-state of a three-dimensional nonhomogeneous incompressible viscous flow driven by gravity in a bounded domain $Ω$ of class $C^2$. In particular, they proved the steady-state is nonlinearly unstable under a restrictive condition of that the derivative function of steady density possesses a positive lower bound. In this article, by exploiting a standard energy functional a…
In this note, we show the existence of regular solutions to the stationary version of the Navier-Stokes system for compressible fluids with a density dependent viscosity, known as the shallow water equations. For arbitrary large forcing we are able to construct a solution, provided the total mass is sufficiently large. The main mathematical part is located in the construction of solutions. Uniqueness is impossible to obtain, since the gradient of the velocity is of magnitude of the force. The investigation is connected to the corresponding singular limit as Mach number goes to zero and methods…
We consider the motion of a compressible viscous fluid containing a moving rigid body confined to a planar domain $Ω\subset R^2$. The main result states that the influence of the body on the fluid is negligible if (i) the diameter of the body is small and (ii) the fluid is nearly incompressible (the low Mach number regime). The specific shape of the body as well as the boundary conditions on the fluid--body interface are irrelevant and collisions with the boundary $\partial Ω$ are allowed. The rigid body motion may be enforced externally or governed solely by its interaction with the fluid.
This paper considers the Cauchy problem of equations for the viscous compressible and heat-conductive fluids in the two-dimensional(2D) space. We establish the local existence theory of unique strong solution under some initial layer compatibility conditions. The initial data can be arbitrarily large, the initial density is allowed to vanish in any set and the far field state is assumed to be vacuum.
In this paper, we consider the three dimensional Cauchy problem of the compressible micropolar viscous flows, we prove the existence of unique global classical solution for smooth initial data with small initial energy but possibly large oscillations, the initial density may allowed to contain vacuum states. Furthermore, the large-time behavior of the solution is obtained.
We consider the barotropic Navier--Stokes system describing the motion of a compressible Newtonian fluid in a bounded domain with in and out flux boundary conditions. We show that if the boundary velocity coincides with that of a rigid motion, all solutions converge to an equilibrium state for large times.
In this paper we study the evolution of a small rigid body in a viscous incompressible fluid, in particular we show that a small particle is not accelerated by the fluid in the limit when its size converges to zero under a lower bound on its mass. This result is based on a new a priori estimate on the velocities of the centers of mass of rigid bodies that holds in the case when their masses are also allowed to decrease to zero.
We study the shape differentiability of a general functional depending on the solution of a bidimensional stationary Stokes-Elasticity system, with respect to the reference domain of the elastic structure immersed in a viscous fluid. The differentiability with respect to reference elastic domain variations are considered under shape perturbations with diffeomorphisms. The shape-derivative is then calculated with the use of the velocity method. This derivative involves the material derivatives of the solution of this Fluid-Structure Interaction problem. The adjoint method is used to obtain a si…
A probabilistic representation formula for general systems of linear parabolic equations, coupled only through the zero-order term, is given. On this basis, an implicit probabilistic representation for the vorticity in a 3D viscous fluid (described by the Navier-Stokes equations) is carefully analysed, and a theorem of local existence and uniqueness is proved.
We consider a fluid-structure interaction system composed by a rigid ball immersed into a viscous incompressible fluid. The motion of the structure satisfies the Newton laws and the fluid equations are the standard Navier-Stokes system. At the boundary of the fluid domain, we use the Tresca boundary conditions, that permit the fluid to slip tangentially on the boundary under some conditions on the stress tensor. More precisely, there is a threshold determining if the fluid can slip or not and there is a friction force acting on the part where the fluid can slip. Our main result is the existenc…
In this paper we study the dynamics of a small rigid body in a viscous incompressible fluid in dimension two and three. More precisely we investigate the trajectory of the rigid body in the limit when the its mass and its size tend to zero. We show that the velocity of the center of mass of the rigid body coincides with the background fluid velocity in the limit. We are able to consider the case where the density of the small rigid body is uniformly bounded respect to its size.
In this paper we study the interaction of a small rigid body in a viscous compressible fluid. The system occupies a bounded three dimensional domain. The object it allowed to freely move and its dynamics follows the Newton's laws. We show that as the size of the object converges to zero the system fluid plus rigid body converges to the compressible Navier-Stokes system under some mild lower bound on the mass and the inertia momentum. It is a first result of homogenization in the case of fluid-structure interaction in the compressible situation. As a corollary we slightly improved the result on…
We consider a single disk moving under the influence of a 2D viscous fluid and we study the asymptotic as the size of the solid tends to zero.If the density of the solid is independent of $\varepsilon$, the energy equality is not sufficient to obtain a uniform estimate for the solid velocity. This will be achieved thanks to the optimal $L^p-L^q$ decay estimates of the semigroup associated to the fluid-rigid body system and to a fixed point argument. Next, we will deduce the convergence to the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations in $\R^2$.
In this paper we study the interaction problem between a nonlinear thermoelastic plate and a compressible viscous fluid with the adiabatic constant $γ>12/7$. The existence of a weak solution for this problem is obtained by constructing a time-continuous operator splitting scheme that decouples the fluid and the structure. The fluid sub-problem is given on a fixed reference domain in the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation, and the continuity equation is damped on this domain as well. This allows the majority of the analysis to be performed on the fixed reference domain, while the c…
In this paper, we prove the existence of global weak solutions to the compressible two-fluid Navier-Stokes equations in three dimensional space. The pressure depends on two different variables from the continuity equations. We develop an argument of variable reduction for the pressure law. This yields to the strong convergence of the densities, and provides the existence of global solutions in time, for the compressible two-fluid Navier-Stokes equations, with large data in three dimensional space.
In this paper, we study the problem concerning the approximation of a rigid obstacle for flows governed by the stationary Navier-Stokes equations in the two-dimensional case. The idea is to consider a highly viscous fluid in the place of the obstacle. Formally, as the fluid viscosity goes to infinity inside the region occupied by the obstacle, we obtain the original problem in the limit. The main goal is to establish a better regularity of approximate solutions. In particular, the pointwise estimate for the gradient of the velocity is proved. We give numerical evidence that the penalized solut…
This paper concerns the dynamics of two layers of compressible, barotropic, viscous fluid lying atop one another. The lower fluid is bounded below by a rigid bottom, and the upper fluid is bounded above by a trivial fluid of constant pressure. This is a free boundary problem: the interfaces between the fluids and above the upper fluid are free to move. The fluids are acted on by gravity in the bulk, and at the free interfaces we consider both the case of surface tension and the case of no surface forces. We are concerned with the Rayleigh-Taylor instability when the upper fluid is heavier than…

We investigate global well-posedness to the Cauchy problem of three-dimensional compressible viscous and heat-conducting micropolar fluid equations with zero density at infinity. By delicate energy estimates, we establish global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions under some smallness condition depending only on the parameters appeared in the system and the initial mass. In particular, the initial mass can be arbitrarily large. This improves our previous work [23]. Moreover, we also generalize the result [13] to the case that vacuum is allowed at infinity.
We study low regularity behavior of the nonlinear wave equation in $\mathbb{R}^2$ augmented by the viscous dissipative effects described by the Dirichlet-Neumann operator. Problems of this type arise in fluid-structure interaction where the Dirichlet-Neumann operator models the coupling between a viscous, incompressible fluid and an elastic structure. We show that despite the viscous regularization, the Cauchy problem with initial data $(u,u_t)$ in $H^s(\mathbb{R}^2)\times H^{s-1}(\mathbb{R}^2)$, is ill-posed whenever ${0 < s < s_{cr}}$, where the critical exponent $s_{cr}$ depends on the degr…
