This article discusses the classical problem of how to calculate $r_n(m)$, the number of ways to represent an integer $m$ by a sum of $n$ squares from a computational efficiency viewpoint. Although this problem has been studied in great detail, there are very few formulas given for the purpose of computing $r_n(m)$ quickly. More precisely, for fixed $n$, we want a formula for $r_n(m)$ that computes in log-polynomial time (with respect to $m$) when the prime factorization of $m$ is given. Restricting to even $n$, we can view $θ_n(q)$, the theta function associated to sums of $n$ squares, as a modular form of weight $n/2$ on $Γ_1(4)$. In particular, we show that for only a small finite list of $n$ can $θ_n$ be written as a linear combination consisting entirely of Eisenstein series and cusp forms with complex multiplication. These are the only $n$ that give rise to "elementary" formulas for $r_n(m)$, i.e. formulas such that for a prime $p$, $r_n(p)$ can be calculated in $\cO(\log(p))$-time. Viewing $θ_n(q)$ as one of the simpler examples of modular forms that are not strictly Eisenstein, this result motivates the necessity of a log-polynomial time algorithm that directly calculates the Fourier coefficients of modular forms in the generic situation when there is no such formula, as described in Couveignes and Edixhoven's forthcoming book (for level 1 cases) and Peter Bruin's Ph.D. thesis (for higher level, including 4).
By developing a connection between partial theta functions and Appell-Lerch sums, we find and prove a formula which expresses Hecke-type double sums in terms of Appell-Lerch sums and theta functions. Not only does our formula prove classical Hecke-type double sum identities such as those found in work Kac and Peterson on affine Lie Algebras and Hecke modular forms, but once we have the Hecke-type forms for Ramanujan's mock theta functions our formula gives straightforward proofs of many of the classical mock theta function identities. In particular, we obtain a new proof of the mock theta conj…
Two classes of finite trigonometric sums, each involving only $\sin$'s, are evaluated in closed form. The previous and original proofs arise from Ramanujan's theta functions and modular equations.
We evaluate some finite and infinite sums involving $q$-trigonometric and $q$-digamma functions. Upon letting $q$ approach $1$, one obtains corresponding sums for the classical trigonometric and the digamma functions. Our key argument is a theta product formula of Jacobi and Gosper's $q$-trigonometric identities.
We develop a setting in which one can evaluate certain Hecke-Rogers series in terms of false theta functions. We apply our setting to recent false theta function identities of Chan and Kim as well as Andrews and Warnaar.
We obtain four Hecke-type double sums for three of Ramanujan's third order mock theta functions. We discuss how these four are related to the new mock theta functions of Andrews' work on $q$-orthogonal polynomials and Bringmann, Hikami, and Lovejoy's work on unified Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants of certain Seifert manifolds. We then prove identities between these new mock theta functions by first expressing them in terms of the universal mock theta function.
In this paper, we obtain some behaviours of theta sums of higher index for the Schroedinger-Weil representation of the Jacobi group associated with a positive definite symmetric real matrix of degree m.
In recent work, Hickerson and the author demonstrated that it is useful to think of Appell--Lerch sums as partial theta functions. This notion can be used to relate identities involving partial theta functions with identities involving Appell--Lerch sums. In this sense, Appell--Lerch sums and partial theta functions appear to be dual to each other. This duality theory is not unlike that found by Andrews between various sets of identities of Rogers-Ramanujan type with respect to Baxter's solution to the hard hexagon model of statistical mechanics. As an application we construct bilateral $q$-se…

We offer some further applications of some Bailey pairs related to some mock theta functions which were established in a recent study. We discuss and offer some double-sum $q$-series, with new relationships among mock theta functions. We also offer a new relationship between the Bailey pair of Bringmann and Kane with that of Andrews.
On a product of three theta functions and the number of representations of integers as mixed ternary sums involving squares, triangular, pentagonal and octagonal numbers
In the first part, we consider generalized quadratic Gauss sums as finite analogues of the Jacobi theta function, and the reciprocity law for Gauss sums as their transformation formula. We attach finite Dirichlet series to Gauss sums using a Möbius transform, and show they have a functional equation, Euler product factorization, and roots only on the critical line. In the second part, we prove a general reciprocity law for sums of exponentials of rational quadratic forms in any number of variables, using the transformation formula of the Riemann theta function on the Siegel upper half-space.
Assuming the Generalised Riemann Hypothesis, we prove a sharp upper bound on moments of shifted Dirichlet $L$-functions. We use this to obtain conditional upper bounds on high moments of theta functions. Both of these results strengthen theorems of Munsch, who proved almost sharp upper bounds for these quantities. The main new ingredient of our proof comes from a paper of Harper, who showed the related result $\int_{0}^T |ζ(1/2+it)|^{2k} \ll_k T(\log T)^{k^2} $ for all $k\geq 0$ under the Riemann Hypothesis. Finally, we obtain a sharp conditional upper bound on high moments of character sums o…
Theta sums are finite exponential sums with a quadratic form in the oscillatory phase. This paper establishes new upper bounds for theta sums in the case of smooth and box truncations. This generalises a classic 1977 result of Fiedler, Jurkat and Körner for one-variable theta sums and, in the multi-variable case, improves previous estimates obtained by Cosentino and Flaminio in 2015. Key steps in our approach are the automorphic representation of theta functions and their growth in the cusps of the underlying homogeneous space.
Let $f$ be a cuspidal newform (holomorphic or Maass) of arbitrary level and nebentypus and denote by $λ_f(n)$ its $n$-th Hecke eigenvalue. Let $$ r(n)=\#\left\{(n_1,n_2)\in \mathbb{Z}^2:n_1^2+n_2^2=n\right\}. $$ In this paper, we study the shifted convolution sum $$ \mathcal{S}_h(X)=\sum_{n\leq X}λ_f(n+h)r(n), \qquad 1\leq h\leq X, $$ and establish uniform bounds with respect to the shift $h$ for $\mathcal{S}_h(X)$.
Recently, Bringmann and Kane established two new Bailey pairs and used them to relate certain q-hypergeometric series to real quadratic fields. We show how these pairs give rise to new mock theta functions in the form of q-hypergeometric double sums. Additionally, we prove an identity between one of these sums and two classical mock theta functions introduced by Gordon and McIntosh.
We give a complete and elementary proofs of "Jordan's sums" and study Euler's types sums. In particular we give a formula for the sum of series with same weight, which is similar to this one of classical 2-Euler's sums.
We prove a general result on Bailey pairs and show that two Bailey pairs of Bringmann and Kane are special cases. We also show how to use a change of base formula to pass from the pairs of Bringmann and Kane to pairs used by Andrews in his study of Ramanujan's seventh order mock theta functions. We derive several more Bailey pairs of a similar type and use these to construct a number of new q-hypergeometric double sums which are mock theta functions. Finally, we prove identities between some of these mock theta double sums and classical mock theta functions.
Let $\Bbb Z$ and $\Bbb N$ be the set of integers and the set of positive integers, respectively. For $a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_k,n\in\Bbb N$ let $N(a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_k;n)$ be the number of representations of $n$ by $a_1x_1^2+a_2x_2^2+\cdots+a_kx_k^2$, and let $t(a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_k;n)$ be the number of representations of $n$ by $a_1\frac{x_1(x_1-1)}2+a_2\frac{x_2(x_2-1)}2+\cdots+a_k\frac{x_k(x_k-1)}2$ $(x_1,\ldots,x_k\in\Bbb Z$). In this paper, by using Ramanujan's theta functions $φ(q)$ and $ψ(q)$ we reveal many relations between $t(a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_k;n)$ and $N(a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_k;8n+a_1+\cdots+a_k)$ f…
In recent years the question of maximizing GCD sums regained interest due to its firm link with large values of $L$-functions. In the present paper we initiate the study of minimizing for positive weights~$w$ of normalized $L^1$- norm the sum $\sum_{m_1 , m_2 \leqslant N} w({m_1})w({m_2})\frac{(m_1,m_2)}{\sqrt{m_1m_2}} $. We consider as well the intertwined question of minimizing a weighted version of the usual multiplicative energy. We give three applications of our results. Firstly we obtain a logarithmic refinement of Burgess' bound on character sums $\displaystyle{\sum_{M<n\leqslant M+N}χ(…
Let $p$ be an odd prime. Using I. M. Vinogradov's bilinear estimate, we present an elementary approach to estimate nontrivially the character sum $$ \sum_{x\in H}χ(x+a),\qquad a\in\Bbb F_p^*, $$ where $H<\Bbb F_p^*$ is a multiplicative subgroup in finite prime field $\Bbb F_p$. Some interesting mean-value estimates are also provided.
An elementary approach is shown which derives the value of the Gauss sum of a cubic character over a finite field $\mathbb F_{2^s}$ without using Davenport-Hasse's theorem (namely, if $s$ is odd the Gauss sum is -1, and if $s$ is even its value is $-(-2)^{s/2}$).
We obtain optimal lower bounds for moments of theta functions. On the other hand, we also get new upper bounds on individual theta values and moments of theta functions on average over primes. The upper bounds are based on bounds of character sums and in particular on a modification of some recent results of M. Z. Garaev.
We use a specialization of Ramanujan's ${}_1ψ_1$ summation to give a new proof of a recent formula of Hickerson and Mortenson which expands a special family of Hecke-type double sums in terms of Appell-Lerch sums and theta functions.
We consider the ensemble of curves $\{γ_{α,N}:α\in(0,1],N\in\N\}$ obtained by linearly interpolating the values of the normalized theta sum $N^{-1/2}\sum_{n=0}^{N'-1}\exp(πi n^2α)$, $0\leq N'<N$. We prove the existence of limiting finite-dimensional distributions for such curves as $N\to\infty$, with respect to an absolutely continuous probability measure $μ_R$ on $(0,1]$. Our Main Theorem generalizes a result by Marklof and Jurkat and van Horne. Our proof relies on the analysis of the geometric structure of such curves, which exhibit spiral-like patterns (curlicues) at different scales. We ex…
A new transformation involving the error function $\textup{erf}(z)$, the imaginary error function $\textup{erfi}(z)$, and an integral analogue of a partial theta function is given along with its character analogues. Another complementary error function transformation is also obtained which when combined with the first explains a transformation in Ramanujan's Lost Notebook termed by Berndt and Xu as the one for an integral analogue of theta functions. These transformations are used to obtain a variety of exact and approximate evaluations of some non-elementary integrals involving hypergeometric…
We give closed form evaluations for many families of integrals, whose integrands contain algebraic functions of the complete elliptic integrals $K$ and $E$. Our methods exploit the rich structures connecting complete elliptic integrals, Jacobi theta functions, lattice sums, and Eisenstein series. Various examples are given, and along the way new (including 10-dimensional) lattice sum evaluations are produced.
We prove several old and new theorems about finite sums involving characters and trigonometric functions. These sums can be traced back to theta function identities from Ramanujan's notebooks and were systematically first studied by Berndt and Zaharescu; their proofs involved complex contour integration. We show how to prove most of Berndt-Zaharescu's and some new identities by elementary methods of discrete Fourier Analysis.
We use some elementary arguments to obtain a new bound on bilinear sums with weighted Kloosterman sums which complements those recently obtained by E. Kowalski, P. Michel and W. Sawin (2020).
Let p be a prime = 3 (mod 4). A number of elegant number-theoretical properties of the sums T(p) = \sqrt{p}sum_{n=1}^{(p-1)/2} tan(n^2π/p) and C(p) = \sqrt{p}sum_{n=1}^{(p-1)/2} cot(n^2π/p) are proved. For example, T(p) equals p times the excess of the odd quadratic residues over the even ones in the set {1,2,...,p-1}; this number is positive if p = 3 (mod 8) and negative if p = 7 (mod 8). In this revised version the connection of these sums with the class-number h(-p) is also discussed. For example, a very simple formula expressing h(-p) by means of the aforementioned excess is proved. The bi…
We solve an elementary number theory problem on sums of fractional parts, using methods from group theory. We apply our result to deduce the finiteness of certain monodromy representations.
We discuss an elementary method for the evaluation of the convolution sums $\underset{\substack{ {(l,m)\in\mathbb{N}_{0}^{2}} \\ {α\,l+β\,m=n} } }{\sum}σ(l)σ(m)$ for those $α,β\in\mathbb{N}$ for which $\gcd{(α,β)}=1$ and $αβ=2^ν\mho$, where $ν\in\{0,1,2,3\}$ and $\mho$ is a finite product of distinct odd primes. Modular forms are used to achieve this result. We also generalize the extraction of the convolution sum to all natural numbers. Formulae for the number of representations of a positive integer $n$ by octonary quadratic forms using convolution sums belonging to this class are then deter…
Unary theta functions have played a significant role in the theory of holomorphic modular forms and modular $L$-functions. A partial theta functions is defined analogously, but the sum is over part of the integer lattice. Such sums fail to have modular properties. We give a construction which unifies these partial theta functions with the mock theta function introduced by Ramanujan. The modularity of Ramanujan's mock theta functions has only recently been understood by the work of Sander Zwegers.
We express a family of Hecke--Appell-type sums of Hikami and Lovejoy in terms of mixed mock modular forms; in particular, we express the sums in terms of Appell functions and theta functions. Hikami and Lovejoy's family of Hecke--Appell-type sums was obtained by considering certain duals of generalized quantum modular forms.
In recent years, maximizing Gál sums regained interest due to a firm link with large values of $L$-functions. In the present paper, we initiate an investigation of small sums of Gál type, with respect to the $L^1$-norm. We also consider the intertwined question of minimizing weighted versions of the usual multiplicative energy. We apply our estimates to: (i) a logarithmic refinement of Burgess' bound on character sums, improving previous results of Kerr, Shparlinski and Yau; (ii) an improvement on earlier lower bounds by Louboutin and the second author for the number of non vanishing theta fun…
We extend the results obtained by E. Ntienjem to all positive integers. Let $\EuFrak{N}$ be the subset of $\mathbb{N}$ consisting of $\,2^ν\mho$, where $ν$ is in $\{0,1,2,3\}$ and $\mho$ is a squarefree finite product of distinct odd primes. We discuss the evaluation of the convolution sum, $\underset{\substack{ {(l,m)\in\mathbb{N}^{2}} {α\,l+β\,m=n} } }{\sum}σ(l)σ(m)$, when $αβ$ is in $\mathbb{N}\setminus\EuFrak{N}$. The evaluation of convolution sums belonging to this class is achieved by applying modular forms and primitive Dirichlet characters. In addition, we revisit the evaluation of the…
We use an elementary argument to prove some finite sums involving expressions of the forms $(q)_n$ and $(a;q)_n$ along with inductive formulas for some sequences.
