Let $G$ be a finite group and let $cd(G)$ be the set of all irreducible complex character degrees of $G$. It was conjectured by Huppert in Illinois J. Math. 44 (2000) that, for every non-abelian finite simple group $H$, if $cd(G)=cd(H)$ then $G\cong H\times A$ for some abelian group $A$. In this paper, we confirm the conjecture for the family of projective special linear groups $\textrm{PSL}_4(q)$ with $q\geq 13$.
For $O$ an imaginary quadratic ring, we compute a fundamental polyhedron of $\text{PE}_2(O)$, the projective elementary subgroup of $\text{PSL}_2(O)$. This allows for new, simplified proofs of theorems of Cohn, Nica, Fine, and Frohman. Namely, we obtain a presentation for $\text{PE}_2(O)$, show that it has infinite-index and is its own normalizer in $\text{PSL}_2(O)$, and split $\text{PSL}_2(O)$ into a free product with amalgamation that has $\text{PE}_2(O)$ as one of its factors.
In 2014, Benjamin Nachman showed that when $p\equiv$1 mod 8, the 2-dimensional projective linear group over the field of $p$ elements fails the replacement property if the maximal length $m$ of an irredundant generating sequence for the group is 3. In addition, if $m=4$, the group satisfies the property for any prime $p$. In this paper, we will extend such classification for PSL$(2,q)$ where $q$ is $p$ and $p^2$ with conditions of modulo 8 and 10 on $p$.
We reduce a case of the hidden subgroup problem (HSP) in SL(2; q), PSL(2; q), and PGL(2; q), three related families of finite groups of Lie type, to efficiently solvable HSPs in the affine group AGL(1; q). These groups act on projective space in an almost 3-transitive way, and we use this fact in each group to distinguish conjugates of its Borel (upper triangular) subgroup, which is also the stabilizer subgroup of an element of projective space. Our observation is mainly group-theoretic, and as such breaks little new ground in quantum algorithms. Nonetheless, these appear to be the first posit…
It is already known that the automorphism group of a chiral polyhedron is never isomorphic to $PSL(2,q)$ or $PGL(2,q)$ for any prime power $q$. In this paper, we show that $PSL(2,q)$ and $PGL(2,q)$ are never automorphism groups of chiral polytopes of rank at least $5$. Moreover, we show that $PGL(2,q)$ is the automorphism group of at least one chiral polytope of rank $4$ for every $q\geq5$. Finally, we determine for which values of $q$ the group $PSL(2,q)$ is the automorphism group of a chiral polytope of rank $4$, except when $q=p^d\equiv3\pmod{4}$ where $d>1$ is not a prime power, in which c…
The Bianchi groups ${\rm Bi}(d)={\rm PSL}(2,\mathcal{O}_d) < {\rm PSL}(2,\C)$ (where $\mathcal{O}_d$ denotes the ring of integers of $\Q (i\sqrt{d})$, with $d \geqslant 1$ squarefree) can be viewed as subgroups of ${\rm SO}(3,1)$ under the isomorphism ${\rm PSL}(2,\C) \simeq {\rm SO}^0(3,1)$. We study the deformations of these groups into the larger Lie groups ${\rm SU}(3,1)$ and ${\rm SL}(4,\R)$ for small values of $d$. In particular we show that ${\rm Bi}(3)$, which is rigid in ${\rm SO}(3,1)$, admits a 1-dimensional deformation space into ${\rm SU}(3,1)$ and ${\rm SL}(4,\R)$, whereas any de…
While lattices in semi-simple Lie groups are studied very well, only little is known about discrete subgroups of infinite covolume. The main class of examples are Schottky groups. Here we investigate some new examples. We consider subgroups $Γ$ of arithmetic groups in $PSL(2,C)^q \times PSL(2,R)^r$ with $q+r>1$ and their limit set. We prove that the projective limit set of a nonelementary finitely generated $Γ$ consists of exactly one point if and only if one and hence all projections of $Γ$ to the simple factors of $PSL(2,C)^q \times PSL(2,R)^r$ are subgroups of arithmetic Fuchsian or Kleinia…
We show that Nichols algebras of most simple Yetter-Drinfeld modules over the projective special linear group over a finite field, corresponding to non-semisimple orbits, have infinite dimension. We spell out a new criterium to show that a rack collapses.
Let $G$ denote the projective special linear group $\text{PSL}(2,q)$, for a prime power $q$. It is shown that a finite 2-subgroup of the group $V(\mathbb{Z}G)$ of augmentation 1 units in the integral group ring $\mathbb{Z}G$ of $G$ is isomorphic to a subgroup of $G$. Furthermore, it is shown that a composition factor of a finite subgroup of $V(\mathbb{Z}G)$ is isomorphic to a subgroup of $G$.
We describe the centralizer of irreducible representations from a finitely generated group $Γ$ to $PSL(p,\mathbb{C})$ where $p$ is a prime number. This leads to a description of the singular locus (the set of conjugacy classes of representations whose centralizer strictly contains the center of the ambient group) of the irreducible part of the character variety $χ^i(Γ,PSL(p,\mathbb{C}))$. When $Γ$ is a free group of rank $l\geq 2$ or the fundamental group of a closed Riemann surface of genus $g\geq 2$, we give a complete description of this locus and prove that this locus is exactly the set of…
We show that Nichols algebras of most simple Yetter-Drinfeld modules over the projective special linear group over a finite field, corresponding to semisimple orbits, have infinite dimension. We introduce a new criterium to determine when a conjugacy class collapses and prove that for infinitely many pairs (n,q), any finite-dimensional pointed Hopf algebra H with G(H) = PSL(n,q) or SL(n,q) is isomorphic to a group algebra.
In this short note we prove that the finite non-abelian simple groups PSL(2,q), where q = 5,7, are determined by their posets of classes of isomorphic subgroups. In particular, this disproves the conjecture in the end of [5].
We classify the nonsplit extensions of elementary abelian $p$-groups by $PSL_2(q)$, with odd $p$ dividing $q-1$, for an irreducible induced action, calculate the relevant low-dimensional cohomology groups, and describe the automorphism groups of such extensions.
Let $q$ be a nontrivial odd prime power, and let $n \ge 2$ be a natural number with $(n,q) \ne (2,3)$. We characterize the groups $PSL_n(q)$ and $PSU_n(q)$ by their $2$-fusion systems. This contributes to a programme of Aschbacher aiming at a simplified proof of the classification of finite simple groups.
In this paper, we classify conjugacy classes of centralizers of irreducible subgroups in $PSL(n,\mathbb{C})$ using alternate modules a.k.a. finite abelian groups with an alternate bilinear form. When $n$ is squarefree, we prove that these conjugacy classes are classified by their isomorphism classes. More generally, we define a finite graph related to this classification whose combinatorial properties are expected to help us describe the stratification of the singular (orbifold) locus in some character varieties.
Let $w = [[x^k, y^l], [x^m, y^n]]$ be a non-trivial double commutator word. We show that $w$ is surjective on $\mathrm{PSL}_2(K)$, where $K$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$.
We study the vectorial length compactification of the space of conjugacy classes of maximal representations of the fundamental group $Γ$ of a closed hyperbolic surface $Σ$ in ${\rm PSL}(2,\mathbb R)^n$. We identify the boundary with the sphere $\mathbb P((\mathcal{ML})^n)$, where $\mathcal{ML}$ is the space of measured geodesic laminations on $Σ$. In the case $n=2$, we give a geometric interpretation of the boundary as the space of homothety classes of $\mathbb R^2$-mixed structures on $Σ$. We associate to such a structure a dual tree-graded space endowed with an $\mathbb R_+^2$-valued metric,…
We study a particular class of representations from the fundamental groups of punctured spheres $Σ_{0,n}$ to the group $\text{PSL} (2,\mathbb R)$ (and their moduli spaces), that we call \emph{super-maximal}. Super-maximal representations are shown to be \emph{totally non hyperbolic}, in the sense that every simple closed curve is mapped to a non hyperbolic element. They are also shown to be \emph{geometrizable} (appart from the reducible super-maximal ones) in the following very strong sense : for any element of the Teichmüller space $\mathcal T_{0,n}$, there is a unique holomorphic equivarian…
The Tarski number of a non amenable group is the smallest number of pieces needed for a paradoxical decomposition of the group. Non amenable groups of piecewise projective homeomorphisms were introduced by Monod, and non amenable finitely presented groups of piecewise projective homeomorphisms were introduced by the author in joint work with Justin Moore. These groups do not contain non abelian free subgroups. In this article we prove that the Tarski number of all groups in both families is at most 25. In particular we demonstrate the existence of a paradoxical decomposition with 25 pieces. Ou…
In this paper we characterize the elements of PSL(2,Z), as a subgroup of Thompson group T, in the language of reduced tree pair diagrams and in terms of piecewise linear maps as well. Actually, we construct the reduced tree pair diagram for every element of PSL(2,Z) in normal form. This allows us to estimate the length of the elements of PSL(2,Z) through the number of carets of their reduced tree pair diagrams and, as a consequence, to prove that PSL(2,Z) is a non distorted subgroup of T. In particular, we find non-distorted free non abelian subgroups of T.
We prove that PSL(2,Z[1/p]) gives the first example of groups which are not quasi-isometric to each other but have the same quasi-isometry group. Namely, PSL(2,Z[1/p]) and PSL(2,Z[1/q]) are not quasi-isometric unless p=q, and, independent of p, the quasi-isometry group of PSL(2,Z[1/p]) is PSL(2,Q). In addition, we characterize PSL(2,Z[1/p]) uniquely among all finitely generated groups by its quasi-isometry type.
We find a criterion for the embedding of a nonsplit central extension of $PSL_n(q)$ with kernel of prime order into the permutation wreath product that corresponds to the action on the projective space.
Let $\boldsymbol{G}$ be an algebraic group of exceptional Lie type in characteristic $p$, $G=\boldsymbol{G}^σ$ its fixed-point subgroup under the action of a Steinberg endomorphism $σ$, and $\overline{G}$ an almost simple group with socle $G$. A maximal subgroup $M<\overline{G}$ is called non-generic if it is almost simple and its socle is not isomorphic to a group of Lie type in characteristic $p$. A finite subgroup $H$ of $\boldsymbol{G}$ is Lie primitive if it does not lie in any proper closed positive-dimensional subgroup of $\boldsymbol{G}$; it is Lie imprimitive if it lies in a positive-…
We analyze the group structures of two groups of order 1344 which are respectively non-split and split extensions of the elementary Abelian group of order 8 by its automorphism group PSL_2(7).They share the same character table. The group 2^3.PSL_2(7) is a finite subgroup of the Lie Group G_2 preserving the set of octonions \pm e_i , (i=1,2,...,7) representing a 7-dimensional octahedron. Its three maximal subgroups 2^3:7:3, 2^3.S_4 and 4.S_4:2 correspond to the finite subgroups of the Lie groups G_2, SO(4) and SU(3) respectively. The group 2^3:PSL_2(7) representing the split extension possesses…
Let $G$ be a finite group, and write ${\rm cd}(G)$ for the degree set of the complex irreducible characters of $G$. The group $G$ is said to satisfy the {\it two-prime hypothesis} if, for any distinct degrees $a, b \in {\rm cd}(G)$, the total number of (not necessarily different) primes of the greatest common divisor ${\rm gcd}(a, b)$ is at most $2$. In this paper, we prove an upper bound on the number of irreducible character degrees of a nonsolvable group that has a composition factor isomorphic to ${\rm PSL}_2 (q)$ for $q \geq 7$.
We characterize Beauville surfaces of unmixed type with group either PSL(2,p^e) or PGL(2,p^e), thus extending previous results of Bauer, Catanese and Grunewald, Fuertes and Jones, and Penegini and the author.
For a finite nonabelian group $G$ let $\rat(G)$ be the largest ratio of degrees of two nonlinear irreducible characters of $G$. We show that nonabelian composition factors of $G$ are controlled by $\rat(G)$ in some sense. Specifically, if $S$ different from the simple linear groups $\PSL_2(q)$ is a nonabelian composition factor of $G$, then the order of $S$ and the number of composition factors of $G$ isomorphic to $S$ are both bounded in terms of $\rat(G)$. Furthermore, when the groups $\PSL_2(q)$ are not composition factors of $G$, we prove that $|G:\Oinfty(G)|\leq \rat(G)^{21}$ where $\Oinf…
We discuss recent progress on the problem of classifying point-primitive generalised polygons. In the case of generalised hexagons and generalised octagons, this has reduced the problem to primitive actions of almost simple groups of Lie type. To illustrate how the natural geometry of these groups may be used in this study, we show that if $\mathcal{S}$ is a finite thick generalised hexagon or octagon with $G \leqslant{\rm Aut}(\mathcal{S})$ acting point-primitively and the socle of $G$ isomorphic to ${\rm PSL}_n(q)$ where $n \geqslant 2$, then the stabiliser of a point acts irreducibly on the…
This paper is devoted to the classification of flag-transitive 2-(v,k,2) designs. We show that apart from two known symmetric 2-(16,6,2) designs, every flag-transitive subgroup G of the automorphism group of a nontrivial 2-(v,k,2) design is primitive of affine or almost simple type. Moreover, we classify the 2-(v,k,2) designs admitting a flag transitive almost simple group G with socle PSL(n,q) for some n \geq 3. Alongside this analysis, we give a construction for a flag-transitive 2-(v,k-1,k-2) design from a given flag-transitive 2-(v,k,1) design which induces a 2-transitive action on a line.…
Let $G$ be the simple group ${\rm PSL}(3,2^p)$, where $p$ is a prime number. For any subgroup $H$ of $G$, we compute the Möbius function of $H$ in the subgroup lattice of $G$. To this aim, we describe the intersections of maximal subgroups of $G$. We point out some connections of the Möbius function with other combinatorial objects, and, in this context, we compute the reduced Euler characteristic of the order complex of the subposet of $r$-subgroups of ${\rm PGL}(3,q)$, for any prime $r$ and any prime power $q$.
Given a finite group $G$. The generating pair $(H,a)$ of $G$, that is, $H<G$ and $a\in G$ such that $\langle a,H\rangle=G$. In this paper, we introduce the definition of FF-subgroup to characterize the generating pairs of the symmetric groups, alternating groups and projective groups $PSL(2,q)$. This gives a partial answer to an open problem of J. André and J. Araújo and P. J. Cameron.
We show that for a wide class of groups of finite Morley rank the presence of a split $BN$-pair of Tits rank $1$ forces the group to be of the form $\operatorname{PSL}_2$ and the $BN$-pair to be standard. Our approach is via the theory of Moufang sets. Specifically, we investigate infinite and so-called hereditarily proper Moufang sets of finite Morley rank in the case where the little projective group has no infinite elementary abelian $2$-subgroups and show that all such Moufang sets are standard (and thus associated to $\operatorname{PSL}_2(F)$ for $F$ an algebraically closed field of chara…
In the paper we consider images of finite simple projective special linear and unitary groups under power words. In particular, we show that if $G\simeq \PSL_n^\varepsilon (q)$, then for every power words of type $x^M$ there exist constant $c$ and $N$ such that $\vert ω(G)\vert >c\frac{\vert G\vert }{n}$ whenether $\vert G\vert >N$.
The following problem was originally posed by B.H. Neumann and H. Neumann. Suppose that a group $G$ can be generated by $n$ elements and that $H$ is a homomorphic image of $G$. Does there exist, for every generating $n$-tuple $(h_1,\ldots, h_n)$ of $H$, a homomorphism $\vartheta \colon G \to H$ and a generating $n$-tuple $(g_1,\ldots,g_n)$ of $G$ such that $(g_1^\vartheta,\ldots,g_n^\vartheta) = (h_1,\ldots,h_n)$? M.J. Dunwoody gave a negative answer to this question, by means of a carefully engineered construction of an explicit pair of soluble groups. Via a new approach we produce, for $n = …
Given a black box group $\mathsf{Y}$ encrypting $\rm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{F})$ over an unknown field $\mathbb{F}$ of unknown odd characteristic $p$ and a global exponent $E$ for $\mathsf{Y}$ (that is, an integer $E$ such that $\mathsf{y}^E=1$ for all $\mathsf{y} \in \mathsf{Y}$), we present a Las Vegas algorithm which constructs a unipotent element in $\mathsf{Y}$. The running time of our algorithm is polynomial in $\log E$. This answers the question posed by Babai and Beals in 1999. We also find the characteristic of the underlying field in time polynomial in $\log E$ and linear in $p$. Furthermore…
Suzuki classified all Zassenhaus groups of finite odd degree. He showed that such a group is either isomorphic to a Suzuki group or to $\PSL(2,q)$ with $q$ a power of $2$. In this paper we give another proof of this result using the language of Moufang sets. More precisely, we show that every Zassenhaus Moufang set having root groups of finite even order is either special and thus isomorphic to the projective line over a finite field of even order or is isomorphic to a Suzuki Moufang set.

Denote by $ω(G)$ the number of orbits of the action of $Aut(G)$ on the finite group $G$. We prove that if $G$ is a finite nonsolvable group in which $ω(G) \leqslant 5$, then $G$ is isomorphic to one of the groups $A_5,A_6,PSL(2,7)$ or $PSL(2,8)$. We also consider the case when $ω(G) = 6$ and show that if $G$ is a nonsolvable finite group with $ω(G) = 6$, then either $G \simeq PSL(3,4)$ or there exists a characteristic elementary abelian $2$-subgroup $N$ of $G$ such that $G/N \simeq A_5$.
We give a topological description of the quotient space $Ω(G)/G$ in the case $G \subset PSL(3, \mathbb{C})$ is a discrete subgroup acting on $\mathbb{P}^2_\mathbb{C}$ and the maximum number of complex projective lines in general position contained in Kulkarni's limit set, $Λ(G)$, is 4. We also give a topological description of the quotient space $Ω(G)/G$ in the case $G$ a lattice of Heisenberg's group.
Let A be a locally compact group topologically generated by d elements and let k>d. Consider the action, by pre-composition, of Aut(F_k) on the set of marked, k-generated, dense subgroups D_{k,A} := {h:F_k --> A | h(F_k) is dense in A}. We prove the ergodicity of this action for two families of simple, totally disconnected locally compact groups. (i) A = PSL(2,K) where K is a non-Archimedean local field (of characteristic not equal to 2), (ii) A = Aut^{0}(T) - the group of orientation preserving automorphisms of a (q+1)-regular tree, for q > 1. In contrast, a recent result of Minsky's shows th…
The problems of square root from group element existing in $SL_2(F_p)$, $PSL_2(F_p)$ and $GL_2(F_p)$ were solved. The similar goal of root finding was reached in the GM algorithm adjoining an $n$-th root of a generator results in a discrete group for group $PSL(2,R)$, but we consider this question over finite field $F_p$. Well known the Cayley-Hamilton method \cite{Pell} for computing the square roots of the matrix $M^n$ can give answer of square roots existing over finite field only after computation of $det M^n$ and some real Pell-Lucas numbers by using Bine formula. Over method gives answer…
We prove that if $G$ is a finite simple group which is the unit group of a ring, then $G$ is isomorphic to either (a) a cyclic group of order 2; (b) a cyclic group of prime order $2^k -1$ for some $k$; or (c) a projective special linear group $PSL_n(\mathbb{F}_2)$ for some $n \geq 3$. Moreover, these groups do (trivially) all occur as unit groups. We deduce this classification from a more general result, which holds for groups $G$ with no non-trivial normal 2-subgroup.
We show that the Bianchi group $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathcal{O}_d)$, where $\mathcal{O}_d$ is the ring of integers in $\Q(\sqrt{d})$, $d<0$, has a free quotient of rank $\geq |d|^{1/4-ε}$, as $|d|\to\infty$.
