We prove that any countable discrete and torsion free subgroup of a general linear group over an arbitrary field or a similar subgroup of an almost connected Lie group satisfies the integral algebraic K-theoretic (split) Novikov conjecture over \cpt and §, where \cpt denotes the C^*-algebra of compact operators and §denotes the algebra of Schatten class operators. We introduce assembly maps with finite coefficients and under an additional hypothesis, we prove that such a group also satisfies the algebraic K-theoretic Novikov conjecture over \bar{\mathbb{Q}} and \mathbb{C} with finite coefficients. For all torsion free Gromov hyperbolic groups G, we demonstrate that the canonical algebra homomorphism \cpt[G]\map C^*_r(G)\hat{\otimes}\cpt induces an isomorphism between their algebraic K-theory groups.
We study Chern characters and the assembly mapping for free actions using the framework of geometric $K$-homology. The focus is on the relative groups associated with a group homomorphism $ϕ:Γ_1\to Γ_2$ along with applications to Novikov type properties. In particular, we prove a relative strong Novikov property for homomorphisms of hyperbolic groups and a relative strong $\ell^1$-Novikov property for polynomially bounded homomorphisms of groups with polynomially bounded cohomology in $\C$. As a corollary, relative higher signatures on a manifold with boundary $W$, with $π_1(\partial W)\to π_1…
We show that the Strong Novikov Conjecture for the maximal C*-algebra C*(G) of a discrete group G is equivalent to a statement in topological K-theory for which the corresponding statement in algebraic K-theory is always true. We also show that for any group G, rational injectivity of the full assembly map for the topological K-theory of C*(G) follows from rational injectivity of the restricted assembly map.
We formulate and prove a Bott periodicity theorem for an $\ell^p$-space ($1\leq p<\infty$). For a proper metric space $X$ with bounded geometry, we introduce a version of $K$-homology at infinity, denoted by $K_*^{\infty}(X)$, and the Roe algebra at infinity, denoted by $C^*_{\infty}(X)$. Then the coarse assembly map descents to a map from $\lim_{d\to\infty}K_*^{\infty}(P_d(X))$ to $K_*(C^*_{\infty}(X))$, called the coarse assembly map at infinity. We show that to prove the coarse Novikov conjecture, it suffices to prove the coarse assembly map at infinity is an injection. As a result, we show…
Using techniques developed for studying polynomially bounded cohomology, we show that the assembly map for $K_*^t(\ell^1(G))$ is rationally injective for all finitely presented discrete groups $G$. This verifies the $\ell^1$-analogue of the Strong Novikov Conjecture for such groups.
Decomposition complexity for metric spaces was recently introduced by Guentner, Tessera, and Yu as a natural generalization of asymptotic dimension. We prove a vanishing result for the continuously controlled algebraic K-theory of bounded geometry metric spaces with finite decomposition complexity. This leads to a proof of the integral K-theoretic Novikov conjecture, regarding split injectivity of the K-theoretic assembly map, for groups with finite decomposition complexity and finite CW models for their classifying spaces. By work of Guentner, Tessera, and Yu, this includes all (geometrically…
We prove the Novikov conjecture on oriented Cheeger spaces whose fundamental group satisfies the strong Novikov conjecture. A Cheeger space is a stratified pseudomanifold admitting, through a choice of ideal boundary conditions, an L2-de Rham cohomology theory satisfying Poincare duality. We prove that this cohomology theory is invariant under stratified homotopy equivalences and that its signature is invariant under Cheeger space cobordism. Analogous results, after coupling with a Mishchenko bundle associated to any Galois covering, allow us to carry out the analytic approach to the Novikov c…
We show that for each discrete group G, the rational assembly map K_*(BG) \otimes Q \to K_*(C*_{max} G) \otimes \Q is injective on classes dual to the subring generated by cohomology classes of degree at most 2 (identifying rational K-homology and homology via the Chern character). Our result implies homotopy invariance of higher signatures associated to these cohomology classes. This consequence was first established by Connes-Gromov-Moscovici and Mathai. Our approach is based on the construction of flat twisting bundles out of sequences of almost flat bundles as first described in our previo…
In this article we use existing machinery to define connective $K$-theory spectra associated to topological ringoids. Algebraic $K$-theory of discrete ringoids, and the analytic $K$-theory of Banach categories are obtained as special cases. As an application, we show how the analytic assembly maps featuring in the Novikov and Baum-Connes conjectures can be factorised into composites of assembly maps resembling those appearing in algebraic $K$-theory and maps coming from completions of certain topological ringoids into Banach categories. These factorisations are proved by using existing charact…
We prove that for every finitely generated subgroup of a virtually connected Lie group which admits a finite dimensional model for the classifying space for proper actions the assembly map in algebraic K-theory is split injective. We also prove a similar statement for algebraic L-theory, which in particular implies the integral Novikov conjecture for such groups.
We define a genuine $\mathbb{Z}/2$-equivariant real algebraic $K$-theory spectrum $KR(A)$, for every genuine $\mathbb{Z}/2$-equivariant spectrum $A$ equipped with a compatible multiplicative structure. This construction extends the real $K$-theory of Hesselholt-Madsen for discrete rings and the Hermitian $K$-theory of Burghelea-Fiedorowicz for simplicial rings. We construct a natural trace map of $\mathbb{Z}/2$-spectra $tr\colon KR(A)\to THR(A)$ to the real topological Hochschild homology spectrum, which extends the $K$-theoretic trace of Bökstedt-Hsiang-Madsen. The trace provides a splitting …
Let G be a group, Fin the family of its finite subgroups, and E(G,Fin) the classifying space. Let L^1 be the algebra of trace-class operators in an infinite dimensional, separable Hilbert space over the complex numbers. Consider the rational assembly map in homotopy algebraic K-theory H_p^G(E(G,Fin),KH(L^1))\otimes\Q \to KH_p(L^1[G])\otimes\Q. The rational KH-isomorphism conjecture predicts that the map above is an isomorphism; it follows from a theorem of Yu (see arXiv:1106.3796, arXiv:1202.4999) that it is always injective. In the current article we prove the following. Theorem: Assume that …
We construct a Baum--Connes assembly map localised at the unit element of a discrete group $Γ$. This morphism, called $μ_τ$, is defined in $KK$-theory with coefficients in $\mathbb{R}$ by means of the action of the projection $[τ]\in KK_{\mathbb{R}}^Γ(\mathbb{C},\mathbb{C})$ canonically associated to the group trace of $Γ$. We show that the corresponding $τ$-Baum--Connes conjecture is weaker then the classical one but still implies the strong Novikov conjecture. The right hand side of $μ_τ$ is functorial with respect to the group $Γ$.
The Baum-Connes conjecture predicts that a certain assembly map is an isomorphism. We identify the homotopy theoretical construction of the assembly map by Davis and Lück with the category theoretical construction by Meyer and Nest. This extends the result of Hambleton and Pedersen to arbitrary coefficients. Our approach uses abstract properties rather than explicit constructions and is formally similar to Meyer's and Nest's identification of their assembly map with the original construction of the assembly map by Baum, Connes and Higson.
In this paper we study the index theoretic interpretation of the analytical assembly map that appears in the Baum-Connes conjecture. In its general form it may be constructed using Kasparov's equivariant KK-theory. In the special case of a torsionfree group the domain simplifies to the usual K-homology of the classifying space BG of G and it is frequently used that in this case the analytical assembly map is given by assigning to an operator an equivariant index. We give a precise formulation of this statement and prove it.
We construct a higher Whitehead torsion map, using algebraic K-theory of spaces, and show that it satisfies the usual properties of the classical Whitehead torsion. This is used to describe a "geometric assembly map" defined on stabilized structure spaces in purely homotopy theoretic terms.
We introduce and analyze the concept of an assembly map from the original homotopy theoretic point of view. We give also interpretations in terms of surgery theory, controlled topology and index theory. The motivation is that prominent conjectures of Farrell-Jones and Baum-Connes about K- and L-theory of group rings and group C^*-algebras predict that certain assembly maps are weak homotopy equivalences.
We study the behavior of the Nil-subgroups of K-groups under localization. As a consequence we obtain that the relative assembly map from the family of finite subgroups to the family of virtually cyclic subgroups is rationally an isomorphism. Combined with the equivariant Chern character we obtain a complete computation of the rationalized source of the K-theoretic assembly map in terms of group homology and the K-groups of finite cyclic subgroups.
We study an equivariant co-assembly map that is dual to the usual Baum-Connes assembly map and closely related to coarse geometry, equivariant Kasparov theory, and the existence of dual Dirac morphisms. As applications, we prove the existence of dual Dirac morphisms for groups with suitable compactifications, that is, satisfying the Carlsson-Pedersen condition, and we study a K-theoretic counterpart to the proper Lipschitz cohomology of Connes, Gromov and Moscovici.
