We study an equivariant co-assembly map that is dual to the usual Baum-Connes assembly map and closely related to coarse geometry, equivariant Kasparov theory, and the existence of dual Dirac morphisms. As applications, we prove the existence of dual Dirac morphisms for groups with suitable compactifications, that is, satisfying the Carlsson-Pedersen condition, and we study a K-theoretic counterpart to the proper Lipschitz cohomology of Connes, Gromov and Moscovici.
The equivariant coarse Baum-Connes conjecture interpolates between the Baum-Connes conjecture for a discrete group and the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture for a proper metric space. In this paper, we study this conjecture under certain assumptions. More precisely, assume that a countable discrete group $Γ$ acts properly and isometrically on a discrete metric space $X$ with bounded geometry, not necessarily cocompact. We show that if the quotient space $X/Γ$ admits a coarse embedding into Hilbert space and $Γ$ is amenable, and that the $Γ$-orbits in $X$ are uniformly equivariantly coarsely equiva…
In this article we show that a general notion of descent in coarse geometry can be applied to the study of injectivity of the $KH$-assembly map. We also show that the coarse assembly map is injective in general for finite coarse $CW$-complexes.
The equivariant coarse Novikov conjecture provides an algorithm for determining nonvanishing of equivariant higher index of elliptic differential operators on noncompact manifolds. In this article, we prove the equivariant coarse Novikov conjecture under certain coarse embeddability conditions. More precisely, if a discrete group $Γ$ acts on a bounded geometric space $X$ properly, isometrically, and with bounded distortion, $X/Γ$ and $Γ$ admit coarse embeddings into Hilbert space, then the $Γ$-equivariant coarse Novikov conjecture holds for $X$. Here bounded distortion means that for any $γ\in…
In this paper, we construct an equivariant coarse homology theory with values in the category of non-commutative motives of Blumberg, Gepner and Tabuada, with coefficients in any small additive category. Equivariant coarse K-theory is obtained from the latter by passing to global sections. The present construction extends joint work of the first named author with Engel, Kasprowski and Winges by promoting codomain of the equivariant coarse K-homology functor to non-commutative motives.
We formulate and study a new coarse (co-)assembly map. It involves a modification of the Higson corona construction and produces a map dual in an appropriate sense to the standard coarse assembly map. The new assembly map is shown to be an isomorphism in many cases. For the underlying metric space of a group, the coarse co-assembly map is closely related to the existence of a dual Dirac morphism and thus to the Dirac dual Dirac method of attacking the Novikov conjecture.
For every strong coarse homology theory we construct a coarse assembly map as a natural transformation between coarse homology theories. We provide various conditions implying that this assembly map is an equivalence. These results generalize known results for the analytic coarse assembly map for K-homology to general coarse homology theories. Furthermore, we calculate the domain of the coarse assembly map explicitly in terms of locally finite homology theory.
The $K$-theory of the stable Higson corona of a coarse space carries a canonical ring structure. This ring is the domain of an unreduced version of the coarse co-assembly map of Emerson and Meyer. We show that the target also carries a ring structure and co-assembly is a ring homomorphism, provided that the given coarse space is contractible in a coarse sense.
We enlarge the category of bornological coarse spaces by adding transfer morphisms and introduce the notion of an equivariant coarse homology theory with transfers. We then show that equivariant coarse algebraic $K$-homology and equivariant coarse ordinary homology can be extended to equivariant coarse homology theories with transfers. In the case of a finite group we observe that equivariant coarse homology theories with transfers provide Mackey functors. We express standard constructions with Mackey functors in terms of coarse geometry, and we demonstrate the usage of transfers in order to p…
We redefine the Baum-Connes assembly map using simplicial approximation in the equivariant Kasparov category. This new interpretation is ideal for studying functorial properties and gives analogues of the assembly maps for all equivariant homology theories, not just for the K-theory of the crossed product. We extend many of the known techniques for proving the Baum-Connes conjecture to this more general setting.
Let G be a locally compact group acting smoothly and properly by isometries on a complete Riemannian manifold M, with compact quotient. There is an assembly map which associates to any G-equivariant K-homology class on M, an element of the topological K-theory of a suitable Banach completion B of the convolution algebra of continuous compactly supported functions on G. The aim of this paper is to calculate the composition of the assembly map with the Chern character in the entire cyclic homology of B. We prove an index theorem reducing this computation to a cup-product in bivariant entire cycl…
We study the behavior of the Nil-subgroups of K-groups under localization. As a consequence we obtain that the relative assembly map from the family of finite subgroups to the family of virtually cyclic subgroups is rationally an isomorphism. Combined with the equivariant Chern character we obtain a complete computation of the rationalized source of the K-theoretic assembly map in terms of group homology and the K-groups of finite cyclic subgroups.
We present an Eilenberg-Steenrod-like axiomatic framework for equivariant coarse homology and cohomology theories. We also discuss a general construction of such coarse theories from topological ones and the associated transgression maps. A large part of this paper is devoted to showing how some well-established coarse (co-)homology theories, whose equivariant versions are either already known or will be introduced in this paper, fit into this setup. Furthermore, a new and more flexible notion of coarse homotopy is given which is more in the spirit of topological homotopies. Some, but not all,…
We document some versions, in real K-theory, of well-known properties of the coarse assembly map in complex K-theory. These results are well-known, but difficult to find in the literature.
We construct a corona of a relatively hyperbolic group by blowing-up all parabolic points of its Bowditch boundary. We relate the $K$-homology of the corona with the $K$-theory of the Roe algebra, via the coarse assembly map. We also establish a dual theory, that is, we relate the $K$-theory of the corona with the $K$-theory of the reduced stable Higson corona via the coarse co-assembly map. For that purpose, we formulate generalized coarse cohomology theories. As an application, we give an explicit computation of the $K$-theory of the Roe-algebra and that of the reduced stable Higson corona o…
In this article we give a characterisation of the Baum-Connes assembly map with coefficients. The technical tools needed are the K-theory of C*-categories, and equivariant KK-theory in the world of groupoids.
In this paper we study the index theoretic interpretation of the analytical assembly map that appears in the Baum-Connes conjecture. In its general form it may be constructed using Kasparov's equivariant KK-theory. In the special case of a torsionfree group the domain simplifies to the usual K-homology of the classifying space BG of G and it is frequently used that in this case the analytical assembly map is given by assigning to an operator an equivariant index. We give a precise formulation of this statement and prove it.
We consider a invariant Dirac operator D on a manifold with a proper and cocompact action of a discrete group G. It gives rise to an equivariant K-homology class [D]. We show how the index of the induced orbifold Dirac operator can be calculated from [D] via the assembly map. We further derive a formula for this index in terms of the contributions of finite cyclic subgroups of G. According to results of W. Lueck, the equivariant K-homology can rationally be decomposed as a direct sum of contributions of finite cyclic subgroups of G. Our index formula thus leads to an explicit decomposition of …
The equivariant coarse index is well-understood and widely used for actions by discrete groups. We extend the definition of this index to general locally compact groups. We use a suitable notion of admissible modules over $C^*$-algebras of continuous functions to obtain a meaningful index. Inspired by work by Roe, we then develop a localised variant, with values in the $K$-theory of a group $C^*$-algebra. This generalises the Baum-Connes assembly map to non-cocompact actions. We show that an equivariant index for Callias-type operators is a special case of this localised index, obtain results …
In this note we set a configuration space description of the equivariant connective K-homology groups with coefficients in a unital C*-algebra for proper actions. Over this model we define a connective assembly map and prove that in this setting is possible to recover the analytic assembly map.
We prove that the coarse assembly maps for proper metric spaces which are non-positively curved in the sense of Busemann are isomorphisms, where we do not assume that the spaces are with bounded coarse geometry. Also it is shown that we can calculate the coarse K-homology and the K-theory of the Roe algebra by using the visual boundaries.
This paper studies higher index theory for a random sequence of bounded degree, finite graphs with diameter tending to infinity. We show that in a natural model for such random sequences the following hold almost surely: the coarse Baum-Connes assembly map is injective; the coarse Baum-Connes assembly map is not surjective; the maximal coarse Baum-Connes assembly map is an isomorphism. These results are closely tied to issues of expansion in graphs: in particular, we also show that such random sequences almost surely do not have geometric property (T), a strong form of expansion. The key geome…
For a proper, cocompact action by a locally compact group of the form $H \times G$, with $H$ compact, we define an $H \times G$-equivariant index of $H$-transversally elliptic operators, which takes values in $KK_*(C^*H, C^*G)$. This simultaneously generalises the Baum--Connes analytic assembly map, Atiyah's index of transversally elliptic operators, and Kawasaki's orbifold index. This index also generalises the assembly map to elliptic operators on orbifolds. In the special case where the manifold in question is a real semisimple Lie group, $G$ is a cocompact lattice and $H$ is a maximal comp…
We formulate and prove a Bott periodicity theorem for an $\ell^p$-space ($1\leq p<\infty$). For a proper metric space $X$ with bounded geometry, we introduce a version of $K$-homology at infinity, denoted by $K_*^{\infty}(X)$, and the Roe algebra at infinity, denoted by $C^*_{\infty}(X)$. Then the coarse assembly map descents to a map from $\lim_{d\to\infty}K_*^{\infty}(P_d(X))$ to $K_*(C^*_{\infty}(X))$, called the coarse assembly map at infinity. We show that to prove the coarse Novikov conjecture, it suffices to prove the coarse assembly map at infinity is an injection. As a result, we show…
We develop a generalization of quantitative $K$-theory, which we call controlled $K$-theory. It is powerful enough to study the $K$-theory of crossed product of $C^*$-algebras by action of étale groupoids and discrete quantum groups. In this article, we will use it to study groupoids crossed products. We define controlled assembly maps, which factorize the Baum-Connes assembly maps, and define the controlled Baum-Connes conjecture. We relate the controlled conjecture for groupoids to the classical conjecture, and to the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture. This allows to give applications to Coarse …
We construct the geometric Baum-Connes assembly map for twisted Lie groupoids, that means for Lie groupoids together with a given groupoid equivariant $PU(H)-$principle bundle. The construction is based on the use of geometric deformation groupoids, these objects allow in particular to give a geometric construction of the associated pushforward maps and to establish the functoriality. The main results in this paper are to define the geometric twisted K-homology groups and to construct the assembly map. Even in the untwisted case the fact that the geometric twisted K-homology groups and the geo…
Given a (not necessarily discrete) proper metric space $M$ with bounded geometry, we define a groupoid $G(M)$. We show that the coarse Baum--Connes conjecture with coefficients, which states that the assembly map with coefficients for G(M) is an isomorphism, is hereditary by taking closed subspaces.
Let G be a discrete, torsion free group with a finite dimensional classifying space BG. We show that the existence of a gamma-element for such G is a metric, that is, coarse, invariant of G. We also obtain results for groups with torsion. The method of proof involves showing that a group G possesses a gamma-element if and only if a certain coarse (co)-assembly map is an isomorphism.
Let G be a group, Fin the family of its finite subgroups, and E(G,Fin) the classifying space. Let L^1 be the algebra of trace-class operators in an infinite dimensional, separable Hilbert space over the complex numbers. Consider the rational assembly map in homotopy algebraic K-theory H_p^G(E(G,Fin),KH(L^1))\otimes\Q \to KH_p(L^1[G])\otimes\Q. The rational KH-isomorphism conjecture predicts that the map above is an isomorphism; it follows from a theorem of Yu (see arXiv:1106.3796, arXiv:1202.4999) that it is always injective. In the current article we prove the following. Theorem: Assume that …
For a countable discrete group $G$, we construct a new and concrete model for the equivariant topological $K$-homology theory of $G$, which is defined for all $G$-actions, not just for proper $G$-actions. The construction of our model combines some of the ideas from the localization algebra approach to the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture and the controlled algebra approach to the Farrell-Jones conjecture. It brings new ideas into the study of the Baum-Connes conjecture. First, as the model is defined for all $G$-actions, we are able to define relative assembly maps. We prove, by using an inducti…
Let $\cB$ be the ring of bounded operators in a complex, separable Hilbert space. For $p>0$ consider the Schatten ideal $\cL^p$ consisting of those operators whose sequence of singular values is $p$-summable; put $\cS=\bigcup_p\cL^p$. Let $G$ be a group and $\vcyc$ the family of virtually cyclic subgroups. Guoliang Yu proved that the $K$-theory assembly map \[ H_*^G(\cE(G,\vcyc),K(\cS))\to K_*(\cS[G]) \] is rationally injective. His proof involves the construction of a certain Chern character tailored to work with coefficients $\cS$ and the use of some results about algebraic $K$-theory of ope…
The goal of this article is to provide a bridge between the gamma element method for the Baum--Connes conjecture (the Dirac dual-Dirac method) and the controlled algebraic approach of Roe and Yu (localization algebras). For any second countable, locally compact group G, we study the reduced crossed product algebras of the representable localization algebras for proper G-spaces. We show that the naturally defined forget-control map is equivalent to the Baum--Connes assembly map for any locally compact group G and for any coefficient G-C*-algebra B. We describe the gamma element method for the B…
Consider a proper, isometric action by a unimodular, locally compact group $G$ on a complete Riemannian manifold $M$. For equivariant elliptic operators that are invertible outside a cocompact subset of $M$, we show that a localised index in the $K$-theory of the maximal group $C^*$-algebra of $G$ is well-defined. The approach is based on the use of maximal versions of equivariant localised Roe algebras, and many of the technical arguments in this paper are used to handle the ways in which they differ from their reduced versions. By using the maximal group $C^*$-algebra instead of its reduced …
We study in this paper the maximal version of the coarse Baum-Connes assembly map for families of expanding graphs arising from residually finite groups. Unlike for the usual Roe algebra, we show that this assembly map is closely related to the (maximal) Baum-Connes assembly map for the group and is an isomorphism for a class of expanders. We also introduce a quantitative Baum-Connes assembly map and discuss its connections to K-theory of (maximal) Roe algebras.
In this paper, the first of a series of two, we continue the study of higher index theory for expanders. We prove that if a sequence of graphs is an expander and the girth of the graphs tends to infinity, then the coarse Baum-Connes assembly map is injective, but not surjective, for the associated metric space $X$. Expanders with this girth property are a necessary ingredient in the construction of the so-called `Gromov monster' groups that (coarsely) contain expanders in their Cayley graphs. We use this connection to show that the Baum-Connes assembly map with certain coefficients is injectiv…
In the first part of this series, we defined an equivariant index without assuming the group acting or the orbit space of the action to be compact. This allowed us to generalise an index of deformed Dirac operators, defined for compact groups by Braverman. In this paper, we investigate properties and applications of this index. We prove that it has an induction property that can be used to deduce various other properties of the index. In the case of compact orbit spaces, we show how it is related to the analytic assembly map from the Baum-Connes conjecture, and an index used by Mathai and Zhan…
We study the $K$-theory and Swan theory of the group ring $R[G]$, when $G$ is a finite group and $R$ is any ring or ring spectrum. In this setting, the well-known assembly map for $K(R[G])$ has a companion called the coassembly map. We prove that their composite is the equivariant norm of $K(R)$. This gives a splitting of both assembly and coassembly after $K(n)$-localization, a new map between Whitehead torsion and Tate cohomology, and a partial computation of $K$-theory of representations in the category of spectra.
Given an action of a discrete quantum group (in the sense of Van Daele, Kustermans and Effros-Ruan) ${\cal A}$ on a $C^*$-algebra ${\cal C}$, satisfying some regularity assumptions resembling the proper $Γ$-compact action for a classical discrete group $Γ$ on some space, we are able to construct canonical maps $μ^i_r$ (\$μ_i$ respectively) ($i=0,1$) from the ${\cal A}$-equivariant K-homology groups $KK_i^{\cal A}({\cal C}, C |)$ to the K-theory groups $K_i(\hat{{\cal A}_r})$ ($K_i(\hat{\cal A})$ respectively), where $\hat{{\cal A}_r}$ and $\hat{\cal A}$ stand for the quantum analogues of the r…
