In this paper, we prove the equality between the transcendental degree of the field generated by the v-adic periods of a t-motive M and the dimension of the Tannakian Galois group for M, where v is a "finite" place of the rational function field over a finite field. As an application, we prove the algebraic independence of certain "formal" polylogarithms.
The purpose of this article is to give an overview of the series of papers [BK1], [BK2] concerning the $p$-adic Beilinson conjecture of motives associated to Hecke characters of an imaginary quadratic field $K$, for a prime $p$ which splits in $K$.
We describe some new general constructions of $p$-adic $L$-functions attached to certain arithmetically defined complex $L$-functions coming from motives over $\bold Q$ with coefficiens in a number field $T$, with $[T:\bold Q]<\infty$. These constructions are equivalent to proving some generalized Kummer congruences for critical special values of these complex $L$-functions.
We conjecture that special elements associated with rank-one motives are obtained $p$-adically from Rubin-Stark elements by means of a precise `higher-rank Soulé twist' construction. We show this conjecture incorporates a variety of known results and existing predictions and also gives rise to a concrete strategy for proving the equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture for rank-one motives. We then use this approach to obtain new evidence in support of the equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture in the setting of CM abelian varieties.
Drinfeld-modules and $A$-motives are the function field analogous of elliptic curves and abelian varieties. For the latter one can construct the $l$-adic Galois representation and can ask if its image is open. For Drinfeld-modules this question was answered by Pink and his coauthors. We clarify the rank one case for $A$-motives and show that the image of Galois is open if and only if the virtual dimension is prime to the characteristic of the ground field.
In a previous paper we constructed a new class of Iwasawa modules as $\ell$--adic realizations of what we called abstract $\ell$--adic $1$--motives in the number field setting. We proved in loc. cit. that the new Iwasawa modules satisfy an equivariant main conjecture. In this paper we link the new modules to the $\ell$--adified Tate canonical class, defined by Tate in 1960 and give an explicit construction of (the minus part of) $\ell$--adic Tate sequences for any Galois CM extension $K/k$ of an arbitrary totally real number field $k$. These explicit constructions are significant and useful in…
We develop a framework to investigate conjectures on congruences between the algebraic part of special values of $L$-functions of congruent motives. We show that algebraic local Euler factors satisfy precise interpolation properties in $p$-adic families of motives and that algebraic $p$-adic $L$-functions exist in quite large generality for $p$-adic families of automorphic motives. We formulate two conjectures refining (and correcting) the currently existing formulation of the Equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture with coefficients in Hecke algebras and pointing out the links between conjectu…
We discuss the deep relationship between $\infty$-categorical functional analysis and the anticipated theory of $p$-adic motives. The motivation fundamentally comes from applications essentially in arithmetics from very broad perspectives. The $\infty$-categorical homotopical aspects we considered here come mainly from Bambozzi-Ben-Bassat-Kremnizer, Ben-Bassat-Mukherjee, Bambozzi-Kremnizer, Clausen-Scholze and Kelly-Kremnizer-Mukherjee, based on deep robust foundation of $\infty$-categorical solids and $\infty$-categorical ind-Banach or bornological modules over general Banach rings.
We define the height of a motive over a number field. We show that if we assume the finiteness of motives of bounded height, Tate conjecture for the $p$-adic Tate module can be proved for motives with good reduction at $p$.
We discuss the formalism of Iwasawa theory descent in the setting of the localized K_1-groups of Fukaya and Kato. We then prove interpolation formulas for the `leading terms' of the global Zeta isomorphisms that are associated to certain Tate motives and of the p-adic L-functions that are associated to certain critical motives.
We show that the l-adic realizations of certain Picard 1-motives associated to a G-Galois cover of smooth, projective curves defined over an algebraically closed field are G-cohomologically trivial, for all primes l. In the process, we generalize a well-known theorem of Nakajima on the Galois module structure of certain spaces of Kahler differentials associated to the top curve of the cover, assuming that the field of definition is of characteristic p. If the cover and the Picard 1-motive are defined over a finite field and if G is abelian, we compute the first Fitting ideal of each l-adic rea…
We use the $p$-divisible group attached to a 1-motive to generalize the conjugate $p$-adic uniformization of Iovita--Morrow--Zaharescu to arbitrary $p$-adic formal semi-abelian schemes or $p$-divisible groups over the ring of integers in a $p$-adic field. This mirrors a mixed Hodge theory construction of the inverse uniformization map for complex semi-abelian varieties. We also highlight the geometric structure of the target of the conjugate uniformization map, which is an étale cover of a negative Banach--Colmez space in the sense of Fargues--Scholze.
In this work we prove the so-called "torsion congruences" between abelian $p$-adic $L$-functions that are related to automorphic representations of definite unitary groups. These congruences play a central role in the non-commutative Iwasawa theory as it became clear in the works of Kakde, Ritter and Weiss on the non-abelian Main Conjecture for the Tate motive. We tackle these congruences for a general definite unitary group of $n$ variables and we obtain more explicit results in the special cases of $n=1$ and $n=2$. In both of these cases we also explain their implications for some particular…
In this dissertation, we discuss mainly the corresponding geometric and representation theoretic aspects of relative $p$-adic Hodge theory and $p$-adic motives. To be more precise, we study the corresponding analytic geometry of the corresponding spaces over and attached to period rings in the relative $p$-adic Hodge theory, including derived topological de Rham complexes and derived topological logarithmic de Rham complexes after Bhatt, Gabber, Guo and Illusie which is in some sense equivalent to the derived prismatic cohomology of Bhatt-Scholze as shown in the work of Li-Liu, $\mathcal{O}\ma…
Assuming specific instances of two general conjectures in arithmetic algebraic geometry (bijectivity of $p$-adic regulator maps, injectivity of $p$-adic Abel-Jacobi maps), we prove several cases of the $p$-part of the Tamagawa number conjecture ($p$-TNC) of Bloch-Kato and Fontaine-Perrin-Riou for (homological) motives of modular forms of even weight $\geq4$ in analytic rank $1$. More precisely, we prove our results for a large class of newforms $f$ and prime numbers $p$ that are ordinary for $f$ and such that the weight of $f$ is congruent to $2$ modulo $2(p-1)$. Inspired by work of W. Zhang i…
Let $p$ be an odd prime. We prove the cyclotomic Iwasawa Main Conjecture of K.Kato for the motive attached to an eigencuspform $f\in S_{k}(Γ_{0}(N))$ with arbitrary reduction type at $p$ under mild assumptions on the residual Galois representation $\barρ_{f}$. Under the same hypotheses, we also prove the generalized Iwasawa Main Conjecture for $p$-adic families of modular forms. The Iwasawa Main Conjecture for $f$ is deduced by a limit argument involving fundamental lines from a universal Iwasawa Main Conjecture over the universal deformation space of $\barρ_{f}$, which itself follows from the…
We formulate a conjectural p-adic analogue of Borel's theorem relating regulators for higher K-groups of number fields to special values of the corresponding zeta-functions, using syntomic regulators and p-adic L-functions. We also formulate a corresponding conjecture for Artin motives, and state a conjecture about the precise relation between the p-adic and classical situations. Parts of he conjectures are proved when the number field (or Artin motive) is Abelian over the rationals, and all conjectures are verified numerically in some other cases.
In this paper, we prove that for suitably chosen Dwork motives, the local Galois representation arising from middle cohomology of fibers over a point with $p$-adic valuation $<0$ on the base is regular and ordinary. The result will be crucial in the forthcoming work Potential Automorphy for $GL_n$. The proof consists of the construction of a semistable blowup and a use of Hyodo-Kato's log crystalline cohomology theory.
The primary goal of this article is to study $p$-adic Beilinson conjectures in the presence of exceptional zeros for Artin motives over CM fields. In more precise terms, we address a question raised by Hida and Tilouine on the order of vanishing of Katz $p$-adic $L$-functions associated to CM fields, by means of a leading term formula we prove in terms of Rubin-Stark elements. In the particular case when the CM field in question is imaginary quadratic, our leading term formula and its consequences we record herein are unconditional.
This is my habilitation thesis. As the tradition wants, I tried to give an introduction of my field of research. I post it on the ArXiv with the hope it can be useful to young researchers looking for a short and friendly text on cohomologies of algebraic varieties, periods, algebraic cycles and motives. I might one day find the energy to expand these notes and maybe translate them in English. In the meantime, please feel free to ask questions. The first sections of this text propose an introduction to the theory, I tried to present points of view and examples which are not always stressed in t…
In 2006, Fukaya and Kato formulated a general conjecture about $p$-adic $L$-functions for a large class of motives and derived a precise conjectural interpolation formula from the ETNC. We study this conjectural $p$-adic $L$-function in the setting of Hida families and compare it to the $p$-adic $L$-function constructed by Kitagawa. A priori it is not clear whether the interpolation formulas coincide, mainly because of the rather inexplicit definition of periods (via comparison isomorphisms) that appear in the general formula. Using $p$-adic Eichler-Shimura isomorphisms and their interpolation…
We prove a unicity result for the $L$-functions appearing in the non-commutative Iwasawa main conjecture over totally real fields. We then consider continuous representations $ρ$ of the absolute Galois group of a totally real field $F$ on adic rings in the sense of Fukaya and Kato. Using our unicity result, we show that there exists a unique sensible definition of a non-commutative $L$-function for any such $ρ$ that factors through the Galois group of a possibly infinite totally real extension. We also consider the case of CM-extensions and discuss the relation with the equivariant main conjec…
In this paper we develop a new method to study Iwasawa theory and Eisenstein families for unitary groups $\mathrm{U}(r,s)$ of general signature over a totally real field $F$. As a consequence we prove that for a motive corresponding to a regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic representation $π$ on $\mathrm{U}(r,s)_{/F}$ which is ordinary at $p$, twisted by a Hecke character, if its Selmer group has rank $0$, then the corresponding central $L$-value is nonzero. This generalizes a result of Skinner-Urban in their ICM 2006 report in the special case when $F=\mathbb{Q}$ and the motive is conjugate…
We construct motivic $\ell$-adic representations of $\GQ$ into exceptional groups of type $E_7,E_8$ and $G_2$ whose image is Zariski dense. This answers a question of Serre. The construction is uniform for these groups and uses the Langlands correspondence for function fields. As an application, we solve new cases of the inverse Galois problem: the finite simple groups $E_{8}(\FF_{\ell})$ are Galois groups over $\QQ$ for large enough primes $\ell$.
This is the Part II of our paper "Height functions for motives". We consider more general period domains and the height functions on more general sets of motives. We also consider the corresponding Hodge theoretic variant of Nevanlinna theory.
A theorem of Grothendieck tells us that if the Galois action on the Tate module of an abelian variety factors through a smaller field, then the abelian variety, up to isogeny and finite extension of the base, is itself defined over the smaller field. Inspired by this, we give a Galois descent datum for a motive $H$ over a field by asking that the Galois action on an $\ell$-adic realisation factor through a smaller field. We conjecture that this descent datum is effective, that is if a motive $H$ satisfies the above criterion, then it must itself descend to the smaller field. We prove this conj…
We provide a period interpretation for multizeta values (in the function field context) in terms of explicit iterated extensions of tensor powers of Carlitz motives (mixed Carlitz-Tate t-motives). We give examples of combinatorially involved relations that these multizeta values satisfy.
In this mostly expository note we explain how Nori's theory of motives achieves the aim of establishing a Galois theory of periods, at least under the period conjecture. We explain and compare different notions periods, different versions of the period conjecture and view the evidence by explaining the examples of Artin motive, mixed Tate motives and 1-motives.
We show that the spectrum of Kontsevich's algebra of formal periods is a torsor under the motivic Galois group for mixed motives over the rational numbers. This assertion is stated without proof by Kontsevich and originally due to Nori. In a series of appendices, we also provide the necessary details on Nori's category of motives.
We prove a variant of Oesterlé's conjecture about $p$-adic periods of the modular curve $X_0(p)$, with an additional $Γ(2)$-structure. We use de Shalit's techniques and $p$-adic uniformization of curves whose reduction is semi-stable.
Presenting p-adic numbers as {\em deformations} of finite fields allows a better understanding of Frobenius lifts and their connection with p-derivations in the sense of Buium \cite{Buium-Main}. In this way "numbers {\em are} functions", as recognized before \cite{Manin:Numbers}, allowing to view initial structure deformation problems as arithmetic differential equations as in \cite{Buium-Manin}, and providing a cohomological interpretation to Buium calculus via Hochschild cohomology which controls deformations of algebraic structures. Applications to p-adic periods are considered, including t…
Following Apery's proof of the irrationality of zeta(3), Beukers found an elegant reinterpretation of Apery's arguments using modular forms. We show how Beukers arguments can be adapted to a p-adic setting. In this context, certain functional equations arising from Eichler integrals are replaced by the notion of overconvergent p-adic modular forms, and the periods themselves arise not as coefficients of period polynomials but as constant terms of p-adic Eisenstein series. We prove that the analogue of zeta(3) is irrational for p = 2 and 3, as well as the 2-adic analogue of Catalan's constant.
We define motivic multiple polylogarithms and prove the double shuffle relations for them. We use this to study the motivic fundamental group of the multiplicative group - {N-th roots of unity} and relate it to geometry of modular varieties. In particular we get new information about the actionof the Galois group on the pro-l completion of the above fundamental group. This paper is the second part of "Multiple polylogarithms and mixed Tate motives" math.AG/0103059
In this article we prove some period relations for the ratio of Deligne's periods for certain tensor product motives. These period relations give a motivic interpretation for certain algebraicity results for ratios of successive critical values for Rankin-Selberg L-functions for ${\rm GL}_n \times {\rm GL}_{n'}$ proved by Günter Harder and the second author.
The present paper is devoted to the relations between Deligne's conjecture on critical values of motivic $L$-functions and the multiplicative relations between periods of arithmetically normalized automorphic forms on unitary groups. In the first place, we combine the Ichino--Ikeda--Neal-Harris (IINH) formula -- which is now a theorem -- with an analysis of cup products of coherent cohomological automorphic forms on Shimura varieties to establish relations between certain automorphic periods and critical values of Rankin-Selberg and Asai $L$-functions of ${\rm GL}(n)\times{\rm GL}(m)$ over CM …
In this paper, we give a description of Deligne's periods $c^\pm$ for tensor product of pure motives $M \otimes M'$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ in terms of the period invariants attached to $M$ and $M'$ by Yoshida. The period relations proved by the author and Raghuram in an earlier paper follow from the results of this paper.
We prove that the existence of an automorphism of finite order on a (defined over a number field) variety X implies the existence of algebraic linear relations between the logarithm of certain periods of X and the logarithm of special values of the Gamma-function. This implies that a slight variation of results by Anderson, Colmez and Gross on the periods of CM abelian varieties is valid for a larger class of CM motives. In particular, we prove a weak form of the period conjecture of Gross-Deligne. Our proof relies on the arithmetic fixed point formula (equivariant arithmetic Riemann-Roch theo…
Michael HARRIS defined the arithmetic automorphic periods for certain cuspidal representations of $GL_{n}$ over quadratic imaginary fields in his Crelle paper 1997. He also showed that critical values of automorphic L-functions for $GL_{n}\times GL_{1}$ can be interpreted in terms of these arithmetic automorphic periods. In the thesis, we generalize his results in two ways. Firstly, the arithmetic automorphic periods have been defined over general CM fields. We also prove that these periods factorize as products of local periods over infinity places. Secondly, we show that critical values of a…
As an example of relative p-adic Hodge theory, we sketch the construction of the universal admissible filtration of an isocrystal (ϕ$-module) over the completion of the maximal unramified extension of Q_p, together with the associated universal crystalline local system.
We construct the anticyclotomic $p$-adic $L$-function that interpolates a square root of central values of twisted spinor $L$-functions of a quadratic base change of a Siegel cusp form of genus $2$ with respect to a paramodular group of square-free level, assuming the Böcherer conjecture for the central $L$-values with anticyclotomic twists.
We prove potential automorphy results for a single Galois representation $G_F \rightarrow GL_n(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_l)$ where $F$ is a CM number field. The strategy is to use the $p,q$ switch trick and modify the Dwork motives employed in \cite{HSBT} to break self-duality of the motives, but not the Hodge-Tate weights. Another key result to prove is the ordinarity of certain $p$-adic representations, which follows from log geometry techniques. One input is the automorphy lifting theorem in \cite{tap}.
