We introduce a general notion of covering property, of which many classical definitions are particular instances. Notions of closure under various sorts of convergence, or, more generally, under taking kinds of accumulation points, are shown to be equivalent to a covering property in the sense considered here (Theorem 3.9). Conversely, every covering property is equivalent to the existence of appropriate kinds of accumulation points for arbitrary sequences on some fixed index set (Corollary 3.5).
We discuss corresponding notions related to sequential compactness, and to pseudocompactness, or, more generally, properties connected with the existence of limit points of sequences of subsets. In spite of the great generality of our treatment, many results here appear to be new even in very special cases, such as $D$-compactness and $D$-pseudocompactness, for $D$ an ultrafilter, and weak (quasi) $M$-(pseudo)-compactness, for $M$ a set of ultrafilters, as well as for $[β, α]$-compactness, with $β$ and $α$ ordinals.
In this paper, we continue to investigate topological properties of $\mathcal{I}H$ and its two star versions namely $SS \mathcal{I} H$ and $S \mathcal{I} H$. We characterized $\mathcal{I}$-Hurewicz property by $\mathcal{I}$-Hurewicz Basis property and $\mathcal{I}$-Hurewicz measure zero property for metrizable spaces. We also characterized $\mathcal{I}$-Hurewicz property, star-$\mathcal{I}$-Hurewicz property and strongly star-$\mathcal{I}$-Hurewicz property using selection principles.
The Borel covering property, introduced a century ago by E. Borel, is intimately connected with Ramsey theory, initiated ninety years ago in an influential paper of F.P. Ramsey. The current state of knowledge about the connection between the Borel covering property and Ramsey theory is outlined in this paper. Initially the connection is established for the situation when the set with the Borel covering property is a proper subset of a $σ$-compact uniform space. Then the connection is explored for a stronger covering property introduced by Rothberger. After establishing the fact that in this ca…
In this paper, we introduced the mildly version of the Hurewicz basis covering property, studied by Babinkostova, Kočinac, and Scheepers. A space $X$ is said to have mildly-Hurewicz property if for each sequence $\langle \mathcal{U}_n : n\in ω\rangle$ of clopen covers of $X$ there is a sequence $\langle \mathcal{V}_n : n\in ω\rangle$ such that for each $n$, $\mathcal{V}_n$ is a finite subset of $\mathcal{U}_n$ and for each $x\in X$, $x$ belongs to $\bigcup\mathcal{V}_n$ for all but finitely many $n$. Then we characterized mildly-Hurewicz property by mildly-Hurewicz Basis property and mildly-Hu…
We prove that if X is a separable metric space with the Hurewicz covering property, then the Banach-Mazur game played on X is determined. The implication is not true when "Hurewicz covering property" is replaced with "Menger covering property".
Let $(X,τ)$ be a Hausdorff space and $n\inω$. We prove that if $X$ admits a continuous selection over $\mathcal{F}_{n}(X)$ (nonempty subsets of $X$ of cardinality at most $n$), then for every $n\leq m\leq 2n$ such that $m$ is not a prime number, $X$ admits a continuous selection over $[X]^m$ (subsets of $X$ of cardinality $m$). As a consequence of this, a space $X$ admits a continuous selection for every natural number if and only if the same is true for every prime number. For Hausdorff spaces $(X,τ)$ which admit continuous selections over $[X]^2$, we characterize the existence of continuous …
We prove that under certain set-theoretic assumptions every productively Lindelöf space has the Hurewicz covering property, thus improving upon some earlier results of Aurichi and Tall.
A subset of the Cantor cube is null-additive if its algebraic sum with any null set is null. We construct a set of cardinality continuum such that: all continuous images of the set into the Cantor cube are null-additive, it contains a homeomorphic copy of a set that is not null-additive, and it has the property $γ$, a strong combinatorial covering property. We also construct a nontrivial subset of the Cantor cube with the property $γ$ that is not null additive. Set-theoretic assumptions used in our constructions are far milder than used earlier by Galvin--Miller and Bartoszyński--Recław, to ob…
We establish a surprising connection between Menger's classical covering property and Blass's modern combinatorial notion of groupwise density. This connection implies a short proof of the groupwise density bound on the additivity number for Menger's property.
In this paper, we prove the following Theorems 1. An extremally disconnected space $X$ has the semi-Menger property if and only if One does not have a winning strategy in the game $G_{fin}(sO,sO)$. 2. An extremally disconnected space $X$ has the semi-Rothberger property if and only if One does not have a winning strategy in the game $G_1(sO,sO)$.
The main results of this note are: It is consistent that every subparacompact space $X$ of size $ω_1$ is a $D$-space; If there exists a Michael space, then all productively Lindelöf spaces have the Menger property, and, therefore, are $D$-spaces; and Every locally $D$-space which admits a $σ$-locally finite cover by Lindelöf spaces is a $D$-space.
In this note we present a ZFC construction of a non-meager filter which fails to be countable dense homogeneous. This answers a question of Hernández-Gutiérrez and Hrušák. The method of the proof also allows us to obtain a metrizable Baire topological group which is strongly locally homogeneous but not countable dense homogeneous.
No convenient internal characterization of spaces that are productively Lindelof is known. Perhaps the best general result known is Alster's internal characterization, under the Continuum Hypothesis, of productively Lindelof spaces which have a basis of cardinality at most $\aleph_1$. It turns out that topological spaces having Alster's property are also productively weakly Lindelof. The weakly Lindelof spaces form a much larger class of spaces than the Lindelof spaces. In many instances spaces having Alster's property satisfy a seemingly stronger version of Alster's property and consequently …
This article is a continuation of the study of bornological open covers and related selection principles in metric spaces done in (Chandra et al. 2020) using the idea of strong uniform convergence (Beer and Levi, 2009) on bornology. Here we explore further ramifications, presenting characterizations of various selection principles related to certain classes of bornological covers using the Ramseyan partition relations, interactive results between the cardinalities of bornological bases and certain selection principles involving bornological covers, producing new observations on the $\mathfrak{…
Iwasa investigated the preservation of various covering properties of opological spaces under Cohen forcing. By improving the argument in Iwasa's paper, we prove that the Rothberger property, the Menger property and selective screenability are also preserved under Cohen forcing and forcing with the measure algebra.
We characterize the Hurewicz covering property in metrizable spaces in terms of properties of the metrics of the space. Then we show that a weak version of selective screenability, when combined with the Hurewicz property, implies selective screenability.
According to a result of Kocinac and Scheepers, the Hurewicz covering property is equivalent to a somewhat simpler selection property: For each sequence of large open covers of the space one can choose finitely many elements from each cover to obtain a groupable cover of the space. We simplify the characterization further by omitting the need to consider sequences of covers: A set of reals $X$ satisfies the Hurewicz property if, and only if, each large open cover of $X$ contains a groupable subcover. This solves in the affirmative a problem of Scheepers. The proof uses a rigorously justified a…
The_additivity_number_ of a topological property (relative to a given space) is the minimal number of subspaces with this property whose union does not have the property. The most well-known case is where this number is greater than Aleph_0, i.e. the property is sigma-additive. We give a rather complete survey of the known results about the additivity numbers of a variety of topological covering properties, including those appearing in the Scheepers diagram (which contains, among others, the classical properties of Menger, Hurewicz, Rothberger, and Gerlits-Nagy). Some of the results proved her…
We prove that the Hurewicz property is not preserved by finite products in the Miller model. This is a consequence of the fact that Miller forcing preserves ground model $γ$-spaces.
