We present predicted Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) properties of known X-ray clusters of galaxies for which gas temperature measurements are available. The reference sample was compiled from the BAX database for X-ray clusters. The Sunyaev-Zeldovich signal is predicted according to two different scaling laws for the mass-temperature relation in clusters: a standard relation and an evolving relation that reproduces well the evolution of the X-ray temperature distribution function in a concordance cosmology. Using a Markov Chain Mote Carlo (MCMC) analysis we examine the values of the recovered parameters and their uncertainties. The evolving case can be clearly distinguished from the non-evolving case, showing that SZ measurements will indeed be efficient in constraining the thermal history of the intra-cluster gas. However, significant bias appears in the measured values of the evolution parameter for high SZ threshold owing to selection effects.
We consider different observational effects to test modified gravity approach involving the cosmological constant in the common description of the dark matter and the dark energy. We obtain upper limits for the cosmological constant by studying the scaling relations for 12 nearby galaxy clusters, the radiated power from gravitational waves and the Tully-Fisher relation for super spiral galaxies. Our estimations reveal that, for all these cases the upper limits for $Λ$ are consistent with its actual value predicted by the cosmological observations.
We analyze a set of volume limited sample of galaxies from the SDSS to study the issue of cosmic homogeneity. We use the Renyi entropy of different order to probe the inhomogeneties present in the galaxy distributions. We also calculate the Renyi diveregence to quantify the deviations of the galaxy distribution from a homogeneous Poisson distribution on different length scales. We separately carry out the analysis using the overlapping spheres and the independent voxels. Our analysis suggests that the scale of homogeneity is underestimated in the smaller galaxy samples due to the suppression o…
We present \textsc{MG-MAMPOSSt}, a license-free code to constrain modified gravity models by reconstructing the mass profile of galaxy clusters with the kinematics of the cluster's member galaxies. We describe the main features of the code and we show the capability of the method when the kinematic information is combined with lensing data. We discuss recent results and forecasts on two classes of models currently implemented in the code, characterized by different screening mechanisms, namely, chameleon and Vainshtein screening. We further explore the impact of possible systematics in view of…
One of the cornerstones of general relativity is the equivalence principle. However, the validity of the equivalence principle has only been established on solar system scales for standard matter fields; this result cannot be assumed to hold for the non-standard matter fields that dominate the gravitational dynamics on cosmological scales. Here we show how the equivalence principle may be tested on cosmological scales for non-standard matter fields using the odd multipoles of the galaxy cross-power spectrum and bispectrum. This test makes use of the imprint on the galaxy cross-power spectrum a…
The physics of gravity on cosmological scales affects both the rate of assembly of large-scale structure, and the gravitational lensing of background light through this cosmic web. By comparing the amplitude of these different observational signatures, we can construct tests that can distinguish general relativity from its potential modifications. We used the latest weak gravitational lensing dataset from the Kilo-Degree Survey, KiDS-1000, in conjunction with overlapping galaxy spectroscopic redshift surveys BOSS and 2dFLenS, to perform the most precise existing amplitude-ratio test. We measur…
We test the predictions of Emergent Gravity using matter densities of relaxed, massive clusters of galaxies using observations from optical and X-ray wavebands. We improve upon previous work in this area by including the baryon mass contribution of the brightest cluster galaxy in each system, in addition to total mass profiles from gravitational lensing and mass profiles of the X-ray emitting gas from Chandra. We use this data in the context of Emergent Gravity to predict the "apparent" dark matter distribution from the observed baryon distribution, and vice-versa. We find that although the in…
Several semi-analytic models (SAMs) try to explain how galaxies form, evolve and interact inside the dark matter large-scale structure. These SAMs can be tested by comparing their predictions for galaxy-galaxy-galaxy-lensing (G3L), which is weak gravitational lensing around galaxy pairs, with observations. We evaluate the SAMs by Henriques et al. (2015; H15) and by Lagos et al. (2012; L12), implemented in the Millennium Run, by comparing their predictions for G3L to observations at smaller scales than previous studies and also for pairs of lens galaxies from different populations. We compare t…
The combination of Galaxy-Galaxy Lensing (GGL) and Redshift Space Distortion of galaxy clustering (RSD) is a privileged technique to test General Relativity predictions, and break degeneracies between the growth rate of structure parameter $f$ and the amplitude of the linear power-spectrum $σ_8$. We perform a joint GGL and RSD analysis on 250 sq. degrees using shape catalogues from CFHTLenS and CFHT-Stripe 82, and spectroscopic redshifts from the BOSS CMASS sample. We adjust a model that includes non-linear biasing, RSD and Alcock-Paczynski effects. We find $f(z=0.57) =0.95\pm0.23$, $σ_8(z=0.5…
We test the regime of validity of one-loop galaxy bias for a wide variety of biased tracers. Our most stringent test asks the bias model to simultaneously match the galaxy-galaxy and galaxy-mass spectrum, using the measured nonlinear matter spectrum from the simulations to test one-loop effects from the bias expansion alone. In addition, we investigate the relevance of short-range nonlocality and halo exclusion through higher-derivative and scale-dependent noise terms, as well as the impact of using co-evolution relations to reduce the number of free fitting parameters. From comparing validity…
A Parametrized Galaxy Catalog Simulator For Testing Cluster Finding, Mass Estimation and Photometric Redshift Estimation in Optical and Near Infrared Surveys
The $Λ$CDM model of structure formation makes strong predictions on concentration and shape of DM (dark matter) halos, which are determined by mass accretion processes. Comparison between predicted shapes and observations provides a geometric test of the $Λ$CDM model. Accurate and precise measurements needs a full three-dimensional analysis of the cluster mass distribution. We accomplish this with a multi-probe 3D analysis of the X-ray regular CLASH (Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble) clusters combining strong and weak lensing, X-ray photometry and spectroscopy, and the Sunyaev-…
We investigate the impact of different assumptions in the modeling of one-loop galaxy bias on the recovery of cosmological parameters, as a follow up of the analysis done in the first paper of the series at fixed cosmology. We use three different synthetic galaxy samples whose clustering properties match the ones of the CMASS and LOWZ catalogues of BOSS and the SDSS Main Galaxy Sample. We investigate the relevance of allowing for either short range non-locality or scale-dependent stochasticity by fitting the real-space galaxy auto power spectrum or the combination of galaxy-galaxy and galaxy-m…
Testing cosmic homogeneity and isotropy using galaxy correlations
We analyze two volume limited galaxy samples from the SDSS photometric and spectroscopic data to test the isotropy in the local Universe. We use information entropy to quantify the global anisotropy in the galaxy distribution at different length scales and find that the galaxy distribution is highly anisotropic on small scales. The observed anisotropy diminishes with increasing length scales and nearly plateaus out beyond a length scale of 200 Mpc/h in both the datasets. We compare these anisotropies with those predicted by the mock catalogues from the N-body simulations of the Lambda CDM mode…
SZ scaling relations have been used to test the self-similar prediction for massive galaxy clusters, but little attention has been given to individual galaxy groups. We investigate the scaling relations of galaxy groups and clusters near the North Ecliptic Pole using X-ray and SZ observations. This region of the sky is where both the ROSAT and Planck satellites achieved their deepest observations, permitting the investigation of lower mass systems. Our sample consists of 62 X-ray detected groups and clusters, spanning a mass range of $10^{13.4}M_{\odot}<~M_{500}<10^{15}M_{\odot}$ and redshifts…
We test two methods, including one that is newly proposed in this work, for correcting for the effects of chameleon $f(R)$ gravity on the scaling relations between the galaxy cluster mass and four observable proxies. Using the first suite of cosmological simulations that simultaneously incorporate both full physics of galaxy formation and Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ gravity, we find that these rescaling methods work with a very high accuracy for the gas temperature, the Compton $Y$-parameter of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect and the X-ray analogue of the $Y$-parameter. This allows the scaling relati…
Galaxy cluster centring is a key issue for precision cosmology studies using galaxy surveys. Mis-identification of central galaxies causes systematics in various studies such as cluster lensing, satellite kinematics, and galaxy clustering. The red-sequence Matched-filter Probabilistic Percolation (redMaPPer) estimates the probability that each member galaxy is central from photometric information rather than specifying one central galaxy. The redMaPPer estimates can be used for calibrating the off-centring effect, however, the centring algorithm has not previously been well-tested. We test the…
