We present \textsc{MG-MAMPOSSt}, a license-free code to constrain modified gravity models by reconstructing the mass profile of galaxy clusters with the kinematics of the cluster's member galaxies. We describe the main features of the code and we show the capability of the method when the kinematic information is combined with lensing data. We discuss recent results and forecasts on two classes of models currently implemented in the code, characterized by different screening mechanisms, namely, chameleon and Vainshtein screening. We further explore the impact of possible systematics in view of application to the data from upcoming surveys. This proceedings summarizes the results presented at the ALTECOSMOFUN workshop in September 2021.
The Brans-Dicke theory of gravity is one of the oldest ideas to extend general relativity by introducing a non-minimal coupling between the scalar field and gravity. The Solar System tests put tight constraints on the theory. In order to evade these constraints, various screening mechanisms have been proposed. These screening mechanisms allow the scalar field to couple to matter as strongly as gravity in low density environments while suppressing it in the Solar System. The Vainshtein mechanism, which is found in various modified gravity models such as massive gravity, braneworld models and sc…
We use high-precision combined strong/weak lensing and kinematics measurements of the total mass profiles of the observed galaxy clusters MACS~J1206.2-0847 and Abell~S1063, to constrain the relativistic sector of the general DHOST dark energy theories, which exhibit a partial breaking of the so called Vainsthein screening mechanism, on the linear level of scalar fluctuations around a cosmological background. In particular, by using the \textsc{MG-MAMMPOSSt} framework developed in Pizzuti et al. 2021, for the kinematics analysis of member galaxies in clusters along with lensing mass profile rec…
In this work, we illustrate through a simple example the possibility of testing the chameleon screening mechanism in the Solar System using the forthcoming LISA Pathfinder mission around gravitational saddle points. We find distinctive tidal stress signatures for such models and consider the potential for constraints.
Long range scalar fields with a coupling to matter appear to violate known bounds on gravitation in the solar system and the laboratory. This is evaded thanks to screening mechanisms. In this short review, we shall present the various screening mechanisms from an effective field theory point of view. We then investigate how they can and will be tested in the laboratory and on astrophysical and cosmological scales.
We use the stacked gravitational lensing mass profile of four high-mass (M >~10^{15}Msun) galaxy clusters around z ~ 0.3 from Umetsu et al. to fit density profiles of phenomenological [Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW), Einasto, Sérsic, Stadel, Baltz-Marshall-Oguri (BMO) and Hernquist] and theoretical (non-singular Isothermal Sphere, DARKexp and Kang & He) models of the dark matter distribution. We account for large-scale structure effects, including a 2-halo term in the analysis. We find that the BMO model provides the best fit to the data as measured by the reduced chi^2. It is followed by the Stade…
In this paper, assuming the validity of distance duality relation, $η=D_L(z)(1+z)^{-2}/D_A(z)=1$, where $D_A(z)$ and $D_L(z)$ are the angular and the luminosity distance respectively, we explore two kinds of gas mass density profiles of clusters: the isothermal $β$ model and the non-isothermal double-$β$ model. In our analysis, performed on 38 massive galaxy clusters observed by \textit{Chandra} (within the redshift range of $0.14<z<0.89$), we use two types of cluster gas mass fraction data corresponding to different mass density profiles fitted to the X-ray data. Using two general parameteriz…
We use a sample of 23 galaxy clusters to test the predictions of emergent gravity (EG) as alternative to dark matter. Our sample has both weak-lensing inferred total mass profiles as well as x-ray inferred baryonic gas mass profiles. Using nominal assumptions about the weak-lensing and x-ray mass profiles, we find that the EG predictions (based on no dark matter) are acceptable fits only near the virial radius. In the cores and in the outskirts, the mass profile shape differences allow us to confirm previous results that the EG model can be ruled out at $>5σ$. However, when we account for syst…
We investigate void properties in $f(R)$ models using N-body simulations, focusing on their differences from General Relativity (GR) and their detectability. In the Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ modified gravity (MG) models, the halo number density profiles of voids are not distinguishable from GR. In contrast, the same $f(R)$ voids are more empty of dark matter, and their profiles are steeper. This can in principle be observed by weak gravitational lensing of voids, for which the combination of a spectroscopic redshift and a lensing photometric redshift survey over the same sky is required. Neglecting th…
We present a new method of constraining the mass and velocity anisotropy profiles of galaxy clusters from kinematic data. The method is based on a model of the phase space density which allows the anisotropy to vary with radius between two asymptotic values. The characteristic scale of transition between these asymptotes is fixed and tuned to a typical anisotropy profile resulting from cosmological simulations. The model is parametrized by two values of anisotropy, at the centre of the cluster and at infinity, and two parameters of the NFW density profile, the scale radius and the scale mass. …
We study the impact of cosmological scale modifications to General Relativity on the dynamics of halos within voids by comparing N-body simulations incorporating Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ gravity, with $|f_{R0}|=10^{-6}$ and $10^{-5}$, to those of $Λ$CDM. By examining the radial velocity statistics within voids classified based on their size and density-profile, as "rising" ($R$-type) or "shell" ($S$-type), we find that halo motions in small $R$-type voids, with effective radius $<15 Mpc/h$, reveal distinctive differences between $f(R)$ and $Λ$CDM cosmologies. To understand this observed effect, we st…
Interaction between dark energy and dark matter is probed through deviation from the virial equilibrium for two relaxed clusters: A586 and A1689. The evaluation of the virial equilibrium is performed using realistic density profiles. The virial ratios found for the more realistic density profiles are consistent with the absence of interaction.
Aims. We investigate the gravitational redshift in clusters of galaxies in the symmetron and Hu-Sawicky $f(R)$ models. The characteristic feature of both models is the screening mechanism that hides the fifth force in dense environments recovering general relativity. Methods. We use $N$-body simulations that were run using the code \texttt{Isis}, which includes scalar fields, to analyse the deviation of observables in modified gravity models with respect to $Λ$CDM. Results. We find that due to the presence of the screening, the deviation is highly dependent on the halo mass. For instance, the …
We use high-precision kinematic and lensing measurements of the total mass profile of the dynamically relaxed galaxy cluster MACS J1206.2-0847 at $z=0.44$ to estimate the value of the ratio $η=Ψ/Φ$ between the two scalar potentials in the linear perturbed Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker metric.[...] Complementary kinematic and lensing mass profiles were derived from exhaustive analyses using the data from the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) and the spectroscopic follow-up with the Very Large Telescope (CLASH-VLT). Whereas the kinematic mass profile tracks only the …
This work uses observed galaxy surface brightness profiles at high redshifts to determine the cosmological model best suited to interpret these observations. Theoretical predictions of galactic surface brightness profiles are compared to observational data in two cosmological models, $Λ$CDM and Einstein-de Sitter, to calculate the evolutionary effects of different spacetime geometries in these profiles in order to try to find out if the available data is capable of indicating the cosmology that best represents actual galactic brightness profiles observations. Starting from the connection betwe…
In this work we will test an alternative model of gravity belonging to the large family of galileon models. It is characterized by an intrinsic breaking of the Vainshtein mechanism inside large astrophysical objects, thus having possibly detectable observational signatures. We will compare theoretical predictions from this model with the observed total mass profile for a sample of clusters of galaxies. The profiles are derived using two complementary tools: X-ray hot intra-cluster gas dynamics, and strong and weak gravitational lensing. We find that a dependence with the dynamical internal sta…
A key goal in cosmology in the upcoming decade will be to form a better understanding of the accelerated expansion of the Universe. Upcoming surveys, such as the Vera C. Rubin Observatory's 10-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), Euclid and the Square Killometer Array (SKA) will deliver key datasets required to tackle this and other puzzles in contemporary cosmology. With this data, constraints of unprecedented power will be put on different models of dark energy and modified gravity. In this context it is crucial to understand how screening mechanisms, which hide the deviations of the…

Using a Monte Carlo random walks of a log-normal distribution, we show how to qualitatively study void properties for non-standard cosmologies. We apply this method to an f(R) modified gravity model and recover the N-body simulation results of (Achitouv et al. 2016) for the void profiles and their deviation from GR. This method can potentially be extended to study other properties of the large scale structures such as the abundance of voids or overdense environments. We also introduce a new way to identify voids in the cosmic web, using only a few measurements of the density fluctuations aroun…
We discuss the possibility that the cold dark matter mass profiles contain information on the cosmological constant, and that such information constrains the nature of cold dark matter (CDM). We call this approach Modified Dark Matter (MDM). In particular, we examine the ability of MDM to explain the observed mass profiles of 13 galaxy clusters. Using general arguments from gravitational thermodynamics, we provide a theoretical justification for our MDM mass profile and successfully compare it to the NFW mass profiles both on cluster and galactic scales. Our results suggest that indeed the CDM…
We present a new test of the modified gravity endowed with the Vainshtein mechanism with the density profile of a galaxy cluster halo observed through gravitational lensing. A scalar degree of freedom in the galileon modified gravity is screened by the Vainshtein mechanism to recover Newtonian gravity in high-density regions, however it might not be completely hidden on the outer side of a cluster of galaxies. Then the modified gravity might yield an observational signature in a surface mass density of a cluster of galaxies measured through gravitational lensing, since the scalar field could c…
Modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) provides a paradigm alternative to dark matter that has been successful in fitting and predicting the rich phenomenology of rotating disc galaxies. There have also been attempts to test MOND in dispersion-supported early-type galaxies, but it remains unclear whether MOND can fit the various empirical properties of early-type galaxies. As a way of rigorously testing MOND in elliptical galaxies we calculate the MOND-predicted velocity dispersion profiles (VDPs) in the inner regions of $\sim 2000$ nearly round SDSS elliptical galaxies under a variety of assumpti…
The Beyond Horndeski class of alternative gravity theories allow for Self-accelerating de-Sitter cosmologies with no need for a cosmological constant. This makes them viable alternatives to $Λ$CDM and so testing their small-scale predictions against General Relativity is of paramount importance. These theories generically predict deviations in both the Newtonian force law and the gravitational lensing of light inside extended objects. Therefore, by simultaneously fitting the X-ray and lensing profiles of galaxy clusters new constraints can be obtained. In this work, we apply this methodology t…
The hot ($>10^6$ K) phase of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) contains a large fraction of baryons in galaxies. It also retains signatures of the processes that shaped the galaxies, such as feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and supernovae, and offers a uniquely powerful way to constrain theoretical models of feedback. It is, however, notoriously difficult to detect. By stacking 2643 optically selected galaxies in the eROSITA Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS), we present spatially resolved properties of the extended CGM in both star-forming and quiescent galaxies spanning an order …
