One of the cornerstones of general relativity is the equivalence principle. However, the validity of the equivalence principle has only been established on solar system scales for standard matter fields; this result cannot be assumed to hold for the non-standard matter fields that dominate the gravitational dynamics on cosmological scales. Here we show how the equivalence principle may be tested on cosmological scales for non-standard matter fields using the odd multipoles of the galaxy cross-power spectrum and bispectrum. This test makes use of the imprint on the galaxy cross-power spectrum and bispectrum by the parity-violating general relativistic deformations of the past-light cone, and assumes that galaxies can be treated as test particles that are made of baryons and cold dark matter. This assumption leads to a non-zero galaxy-baryon relative velocity if the equivalence principle does not hold between baryons and dark matter. We show that the relative velocity can be constrained to be less than 28% of the galaxy velocity using the cross-power spectrum of the HI intensity mapping/H$α$ galaxy survey and the bispectrum of the H$α$ galaxy survey.
Above the equality scale the galaxy bispectrum will be a key probe for measuring primordial non-Gaussianity which can help differentiate between different inflationary models and other theories of the early universe. On these scales a variety of relativistic effects come into play once the galaxy number-count fluctuation is projected onto our past lightcone. By decomposing the Fourier-space bispectrum into invariant multipoles about the observer's line of sight we examine in detail how the relativistic effects contribute to these. We show how to perform this decomposition analytically, which i…
The redshift space anisotropy of the bispectrum is generally quantified using multipole moments. The possibility of measuring these multipoles in any survey depends on the level of statistical fluctuations. We present a formalism to compute the statistical fluctuations in the measurement of bispectrum multipoles for galaxy surveys. We consider specifications of a {\it Euclid} like galaxy survey and present two quantities: the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) which quantifies the detectability of a multipole, and the rank correlation which quantifies the correlation in measurement errors between any…
As a generalization of our previous work [Phys. Rev. D 95 043528 (2017)], in which an analytic model for the galaxy bispectrum in redshift space was developed on the basis of the halo approach, we here investigate its higher multipoles that have not been known so far. The redshift-space bispectrum includes the two variables $ω$ and $ϕ$ for the line-of-sight direction, and the higher multipole bispectra are defined by the coefficients in the expansion of the redshift-space bispectrum using the spherical harmonics. We find 6 new nonvanishing components out of $25$ total components up to $\ell=4$…

We present an analytic formula for the galaxy bispectrum in redshift space on the basis of the halo approach description with the halo occupation distribution of central galaxies and satellite galaxies. This work is an extension of a previous work on the galaxy power spectrum, which illuminated the significant contribution of satellite galaxies to the higher multipole spectrum through the non-linear redshift space distortions of their random motions. Behaviors of the multipoles of the bispectrum are compared with results of numerical simulations assuming a halo occupation distribution of the L…
The redshift-space bispectrum (three point statistics) of galaxies depends on the expansion rate, the growth rate, and geometry of the Universe, and hence can be used to measure key cosmological parameters. In a homogeneous Universe the bispectrum is a function of five variables and unlike its two point statistics counterpart -- the power spectrum, which is a function of only two variables -- is difficult to analyse unless the information is somehow reduced. The most commonly considered reduction schemes rely on computing angular integrals over possible orientations of the bispectrum triangle,…
The anisotropy of the redshift space bispectrum contains a wealth of cosmological information. This anisotropy depends on the orientation of three vectors ${\bf k_1,k_2,k_3}$ with respect to the line of sight. Here we have decomposed the redshift space bispectrum in spherical harmonics which completely quantify this anisotropy. To illustrate this we consider linear redshift space distortion of the bispectrum arising from primordial non-Gaussianity. In the plane parallel approximation only the first four even $\ell$ multipoles have non-zero values, and we present explicit analytical expressions…
We present the analysis of the halo bispectrum in redshift-space in terms of its multipoles, monopole, quadrupole and hexadecapole, measured from a large set of simulations. We fit such measurements with a tree-level model in perturbation theory that depends on linear and nonlinear bias parameters as well as on the growth rate $f$ of density fluctuations. The likelihood analysis takes advantage of a very large set of mock catalogs, enabling a robust estimation of the covariance properties for all multipoles. We compare the numerical estimate of the covariance matrix to its Gaussian prediction …
Interacting dark energy models have been suggested as alternatives to the standard cosmological model, $Λ$CDM. We focus on a phenomenologically interesting class of dark scattering models that is characterised by pure momentum exchange between dark energy and dark matter. This model extends the parameter space with respect to $Λ$CDM by two parameters, $w$ and $A$, which define the dark energy equation of state and the strength of the coupling between dark energy and dark matter, respectively. In order to test non-standard cosmologies with Stage-IV galaxy clustering surveys, it is crucial to mo…
We forecast the benefits induced by adding the bispectrum anisotropic signal to the standard, two- and three-point, clustering statistics analysis. In particular, we forecast cosmological parameter constraints including the bispectrum higher multipoles terms together with the galaxy power spectrum (monopole plus quadrupole) and isotropic bispectrum (monopole) data vectors. To do so, an analytical covariance matrix model is presented. This template is carefully calibrated on well-known terms of a numerical covariance matrix estimated from a set of simulated galaxy catalogues. After testing the …
The anisotrpy of the redshift space bispectrum $B^s(\mathbf{k_1},\mathbf{k_2},\mathbf{k_3})$, which contains a wealth of cosmological information, is completely quantified using multipole moments $\bar{B}^m_{\ell}(k_1,μ,t)$ where $k_1$, the length of the largest side, and $(μ,t)$ respectively quantify the size and shape of the triangle $(\mathbf{k_1},\mathbf{k_2},\mathbf{k_3})$. We present analytical expressions for all the multipoles which are predicted to be non-zero ($\ell \le 8, m \le 6$ ) at second order perturbation theory. The multipoles also depend on $β_1,b_1$ and $γ_2$, which quantif…
The galaxy bispectrum contains a wealth of information about the early universe, gravity, as well as astrophysics such as galaxy bias. In this paper, we study the parity-odd part of the galaxy bispectrum which is hitherto unexplored. In the standard cosmological model, the odd-parity bispectrum is generated by galaxy velocities through redshift-space distortions. While small in the case of General Relativity coupled with smooth dark energy, the signal could be larger in modified gravity scenarios. Thus, apart from being a very useful consistency test of measurements of galaxy clustering, the o…
In order to best improve constraints on cosmological parameters and on models of modified gravity using current and future galaxy surveys it is necessary maximally exploit the available data. As redshift-space distortions mean statistical translation invariance is broken for galaxy observations, this will require measurement of the monopole, quadrupole and hexadecapole of not just the galaxy power spectrum, but also the galaxy bispectrum. A recent (2015) paper by Scoccimarro demonstrated how the standard bispectrum estimator may be expressed in terms of Fast Fourier Transforms (FFTs) to afford…
Measurement of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) bispectrum, or three-point correlation function, has now become one of the principle efforts in early-Universe cosmology. Here we show that there is a odd-parity component of the CMB bispectrum that has been hitherto unexplored. We argue that odd-parity temperature-polarization bispectra can arise, in principle, through weak lensing of the CMB by chiral gravitational waves or through cosmological birefringence, although the signals will be small even in the best-case scenarios. Measurement of these bispectra requires only modest modification…
We develop a methodology for estimating parity-odd bispectra in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). This is achieved through the extension of the original separable modal methodology to parity-odd bispectrum domains ($\ell_1 + \ell_2 + \ell_3 = {\rm odd}$). Through numerical tests of the parity-odd modal decomposition with some theoretical bispectrum templates, we verify that the parity-odd modal methodology can successfully reproduce the CMB bispectrum, without numerical instabilities. We also present simulated non-Gaussian maps produced by modal-decomposed parity-odd bispectra, and show t…
We compare the statistics of parity even and odd multipoles of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) sky from PLANCK full mission temperature measurements. An excess power in odd multipoles compared to even multipoles has previously been found on large angular scales. Motivated by this apparent parity asymmetry, we evaluate directional statistics associated with even compared to odd multipoles, along with their significances. Primary tools are the \emph{Power Tensor} and \emph{Alignment Tensor} statistics. We limit our analysis to the first sixty multipoles i.e., $l=[2,61]$. We find no evidenc…
Parity-odd non-Gaussianities create a variety of temperature bispectra in the cosmic microwave background (CMB), defined in the domain: $\ell_1 + \ell_2 + \ell_3 = {\rm odd}$. These models are yet unconstrained in the literature, that so far focused exclusively on the more common parity-even scenarios. In this work, we provide the first experimental constraints on parity-odd bispectrum signals in WMAP 9-year temperature data, using a separable modal parity-odd estimator. Comparing theoretical bispectrum templates to the observed bispectrum, we place constraints on the so-called nonlineality pa…
We develop a possibility of generating tensor non-Gaussianity in a kind of anisotropic inflation, where a $U(1)$ gauge field is kinetically coupled to a spectator scalar field. Owing to this coupling, the coherent mode of the electric field appears and softly breaks the isotropy of the Universe. We compute the bispectrum of linearly-polarized tensor perturbations sourced by the gauge field and find that it is strongly red-tilted and has distinctive statistical anisotropies including higher-order multipole moments. Interestingly, the tensor bispectra with the specific combinations of linear pol…
There exist power contrast in even and odd multipoles of WMAP power spectrum at low and intermediate multipole range. This anomaly is explicitly associated with the angular power spectrum, which are heavily used for cosmological model fitting. Having noted this, we have investigated whether even(odd) multipole data set is consistent with the WMAP concordance model. Our investigation shows WMAP concordance model does not make a good fit for even(odd) multipole data set, and there exist tension between two data subsets. Noting tension is highest in primordial power spectrum parameters, we have a…

We extend the modal decomposition method, previously applied to compress the information in the real-space bispectrum, to the anisotropic redshift-space galaxy bispectrum. In the modal method approach, the bispectrum is expanded on a basis of smooth functions of triangles and their orientations, such that a set of modal expansion coefficients can capture the information in the bispectrum. We assume a reference survey and compute Fisher forecasts for the compressed modal bispectrum and two other basis decompositions of the redshift-space bispectrum in the literature, one based on (single) spher…
We propose an (optimal) estimator for a CMB bispectrum containing logarithmically spaced oscillations. There is tremendous theoretical interest in such bispectra, and they are predicted by a plethora of models, including axion monodromy models of inflation and initial state modifications. The number of resolved logarithmical oscillations in the bispectrum is limited due to the discrete resolution of the multipole bispectrum. We derive a simple relation between the maximum number of resolved oscillations and the frequency. We investigate several ways to factorize the primordial bispectrum, and …
We use the full bispectrum of spherical needlets applied to the WMAP data of the cosmic microwave background as an estimator for the primordial non-Gaussianity parameter f_NL. We use needlet scales up to l_max=1000 and the KQ75 galactic cut and find f_NL=84 +/- 40 corrected for point source bias. We also introduce a set of consistency tests to validate our results against the possible influence of foreground residuals or systematic errors. In particular, fluctuations in the value of f_NL obtained from different frequency channels, different masks and different multipoles are tested against sim…
We study two key issues militating against the use of the anisotropic three-point correlation function (3PCF) for cosmological parameter inference: difficulties with its computational estimation and high-dimensionality. We show how high-dimensionality may be reduced significantly by multipole decompositions of all angular dependence. This allows deriving the full expression for the multipole moments of the anisotropic 3PCF and its covariance matrix in a basis where the dimensionality reduces from nine to two at each multipole in the plane-parallel limit. We use 2D FFTLog formalism to show how …
We address the amount of information in the non-Gaussian regime of weak lensing surveys by modelling all relevant covariances of the power spectra and bispectra, using 1000 ray-tracing simulation realizations for a Lambda-CDM model and an analytical halo model. We develop a formalism to describe the covariance matrices of power spectra and bispectra of all triangle configurations. In addition to the known contributions which extend up to six-point correlation functions, we propose a new contribution `the halo sample variance (HSV)' arising from the coupling of the lensing Fourier modes with la…
We use analytic calculations of the post-recombination gravitational effects of cosmic strings to estimate the resulting CMB power spectrum, bispectrum and trispectrum. We place a particular emphasis on multipole regimes relevant for forthcoming CMB experiments, notably the Planck satellite. These calculations use a flat sky approximation, generalising previous work by integrating string contributions from last scattering to the present day, finding the dominant contributions to the correlators for multipoles l > 50. We find a well-behaved shape for the string bispectrum (without divergences) …
We re-examine a genuine power of weak lensing bispectrum tomography for constraining cosmological parameters, when combined with the power spectrum tomography, based on the Fisher information matrix formalism. To account for the full information at two- and three-point levels, we include all the power spectrum and bispectrum information built from all-available combinations of tomographic redshift bins, multipole bins and different triangle configurations over a range of angular scales (up to lmax=2000 as our fiducial choice). For the parameter forecast, we use the halo model approach in Kayo,…
We use a separable mode expansion estimator with WMAP data to estimate the bispectrum for all the primary families of non-Gaussian models. We review the late-time mode expansion estimator methodology which can be applied to any non-separable primordial and CMB bispectrum model, and we demonstrate how the method can be used to reconstruct the CMB bispectrum from an observational map. We extend the previous validation of the general estimator using local map simulations. We apply the estimator to the coadded WMAP 5-year data, reconstructing the WMAP bispectrum using $l<500$ multipoles and $n=31$…
Lensing of the CMB generates a significant bispectrum, which should be detected by the Planck satellite at the 5-sigma level and is potentially a non-negligible source of bias for f_NL estimators of local non-Gaussianity. We extend current understanding of the lensing bispectrum in several directions: (1) we perform a non-perturbative calculation of the lensing bispectrum which is ~10% more accurate than previous, first-order calculations; (2) we demonstrate how to incorporate the signal variance of the lensing bispectrum into estimates of its amplitude, providing a good analytical explanation…
Cross-correlating the lensing signals of galaxies and comic microwave background (CMB) fluctuations is expected to provide valuable cosmological information. In particular it may help tighten constraints on parameters describing the properties of intrinsically aligned galaxies at high redshift. To access the information conveyed by the cross-correlation signal its accurate theoretical description is required. We compute the bias to CMB lensing-galaxy shape cross-correlation measurements induced by nonlinear structure growth. Using tree-level perturbation theory for the large-scale structure bi…
We present a method that allows us for the first time to estimate the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the harmonic-space galaxy bispectrum induced by gravity, a complementary probe to already well established Fourier-space clustering analyses. We show how to do it considering only $\sim1000$ triangle configurations in multipole space, corresponding to a computational speedup of a factor $\mathcal{O}(10^2)-\mathcal{O}(10^3)$, depending on the redshift bin, when including mildly non-linear scales. Assuming observational specifications consistent with forthcoming spectroscopic and photometric gala…

We study cosmological perturbations by solving the governing Boltzmann and Einstein Field equations up to second order, and calculate the corresponding CMB bispectrum during recombination. We include all the second-order Liouville and collision terms, truncating the multipole hierarchy at $l=10$, consistently including all $m\neq 0$ terms when calculating the bispectrum in the flat-sky limit. At this stage, we focus on contributions at recombination and we neglect 2nd-order vector and tensor terms, lensing effects, and late time non-linear ISW. We find that the signal-to-noise for the bispectr…
The temperature fluctuations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) are supposed to be distributed randomly in both magnitude and phase, following to the simplest model of inflation. In this paper, we look at the odd and even multipoles of the spherical harmonic decomposition of the CMB, and the different characteristics of these, giving rise to a parity asymmetry. We compare the even and odd multipoles in the CMB power spectrum, and also the even and odd mean angles. We find for the multipoles of the power spectrum, that there is power excess in odd multipoles, compared to even ones, meanin…
At linear order the only expected source of a curl-like, B mode, polarization pattern in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is primordial gravitational waves. At second-order B modes are also produced from purely scalar, density, initial conditions. Unlike B modes from primordial gravitational waves, these B modes are expected to be non-Gaussian and not independent from the temperature and gradient-like polarization, E mode, CMB anisotropies. We find that the three point function between a second-order B mode and two first-order T/E modes is a powerful probe of second-order B modes and shou…
Angular statistics of cosmological observables are hard to compute. The main difficulty is due to the presence of highly-oscillatory Bessel functions which need to be integrated over. In this paper, we provide a simple and fast method to compute the angular power spectrum and bispectrum of any observable. The method is based on using an FFTlog algorithm to decompose the momentum-space statistics onto a basis of power-law functions. For each power law, the integrals over Bessel functions have a simple analytical solution. This allows us to efficiently evaluate these integrals, independently of …
We consider a non-inflationary early Universe scenario in which relevant scalar perturbations get frozen out at some point, but then are defrosted and follow a long nearly Minkowskian evolution before the hot era. This intermediate stage leaves specific imprint on the CMB 3-point function, largely independent of details of microscopic physics. In particular, the CMB bispectrum undergoes oscillations in the multipole l space with roughly constant amplitude. The latter is in contrast to the oscillatory bispectrum enhanced in the flattened triangle limit, as predicted by inflation with non-Bunch-…
To fully extract cosmological information from nonlinear galaxy distribution in redshift space, it is essential to include higher-order statistics beyond the two-point correlation function. In this paper, we propose a new decomposition formalism for computing the anisotropic bispectrum in redshift space and for measuring it from galaxy samples. Our formalism uses tri-polar spherical harmonic decomposition with zero total angular momentum to compress the 3D modes distribution in the redshift-space bispectrum. This approach preserves three fundamental properties of the Universe: statistical homo…

We have investigated non-Gaussianity of our early Universe by comparing the parity asymmetry of the WMAP power spectrum with simulations. We find that odd-parity preference of the WMAP data (2<= l <=18) is anomalous at 4-in-1000 level. We find it likely that low quadrupole power is part of this parity asymmetry rather than an isolated anomaly. Futher investigation is required to find out whether the origin of this anomaly is cosmological or systematic effect. The data from Planck surveyor, which has systematics distinct from the WMAP, will help us to resolve the origin of the anomalous odd-par…
We study the effects of instrumental systematics on the estimation of primordial non-Gaussianity using the cosmic microwave background (CMB) bispectrum from both the temperature and the polarization anisotropies. For temperature systematics we consider gain fluctuation and beam distortions. For polarization we consider effects related to known instrumental systematics: calibration, pixel rotation, differential gain, pointing, and ellipticity of the instrument beam. We consider these effects at next to leading order, which we refer to as non-linear systematic effects. We find that if the instru…
We present a measurement of the angular bispectrum of the millimeter-wave sky in observing bands centered at roughly 95, 150, and 220 GHz, on angular scales of $1^\prime \lesssim θ\lesssim 10^\prime$ (multipole number $1000 \lesssim l \lesssim 10000$). At these frequencies and angular scales, the main contributions to the bispectrum are expected to be the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect and emission from extragalactic sources, predominantly dusty, star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) and active galactic nuclei. We measure the bispectrum in 800 $\mathrm{deg}^2$ of three-band South Pole Telesco…
We describe a fast, optimal estimator for measuring angular bispectra between two correlated weakly non-Gaussian fields ($Y$ and $Z$) from observational datasets, based on a separable modal bispectrum expansion. Our methodology is applicable to (1) any shape of the input theoretical bispectrum templates (factorizable or not), (2) both even and odd $\ell_1 + \ell_2 + \ell_3$ multipole domains and (3) both amplitude ($f_{\rm NL})$ bispectrum estimation and full bispectrum reconstruction, considering either joint estimation of ($YYY$, $ZZZ$, $YYZ$ and $ZZY$) shapes, or independent estimation of a…
This study, using publicly available simulations, focuses on the characterisation of the non-Gaussianity produced by radio point sources and by infrared (IR) sources in the frequency range of the cosmic microwave background from 30 to 350 GHz. We propose a simple prescription to infer the angular bispectrum from the power spectrum of point sources considering independent populations of sources, with or without clustering. We test the accuracy of our prediction using publicly available all-sky simulations of radio and IR sources and find very good agreement. We further characterise the configur…
