In General Relativity, the average velocity field of dark matter around galaxy clusters is uniquely determined by the mass profile. The latter can be measured through weak lensing. We propose a new method of measuring the velocity field (phase space density) by stacking redshifts of surrounding galaxies from a spectroscopic sample. In combination with lensing, this yields a direct test of gravity on scales of 1-30 Mpc. Using N-body simulations, we show that this method can improve upon current constraints on f(R) and DGP model parameters by several orders of magnitude when applied to upcoming imaging and redshift surveys.

The Vainshtein mechanism, present in many models of gravity, is very effective at screening dark matter halos such that the fifth force is negligible and general relativity is recovered within their Vainshtein radii. Vainshtein screening is independent of halo mass and environment, in contrast to e.g. chameleon screening, making it difficult to test. However, our previous studies have found that the dark matter particles in filaments, walls, and voids are not screened by the Vainshtein mechanism. We therefore investigate whether cosmic voids, identified as local density minima using a watershe…
We consider different observational effects to test modified gravity approach involving the cosmological constant in the common description of the dark matter and the dark energy. We obtain upper limits for the cosmological constant by studying the scaling relations for 12 nearby galaxy clusters, the radiated power from gravitational waves and the Tully-Fisher relation for super spiral galaxies. Our estimations reveal that, for all these cases the upper limits for $Λ$ are consistent with its actual value predicted by the cosmological observations.
We present a complete derivation of the observationally motivated definition of the modified gravity statistic $E_G$. Using this expression, we investigate how variations to theory and survey parameters may introduce uncertainty in the general relativistic prediction of $E_G$. We forecast errors on $E_G$ for measurements using two combinations of upcoming surveys, and find that theoretical uncertainties may dominate for a futuristic measurement. Finally, we compute predictions of $E_G$ under modifications to general relativity in the quasistatic regime, and comment on the pros and cons of usin…
In theories of modified gravity with the chameleon screening mechanism, the strength of the fifth force depends on environment. This induces an environment dependence of structure formation, which differs from $Λ$CDM. We show that these differences can be captured by the marked correlation function. With the galaxy correlation functions and number densities calibrated to match between $f(R)$ and $Λ$CDM models in simulations, we show that the marked correlation functions from using either the local density or halo mass as the marks encode extra information, which can be used to test these theor…
We investigate the possibility of testing Einstein's general theory of relativity (GR) and the standard cosmological model via the $E_{\rm G}$ statistic using neutral hydrogen (HI) intensity mapping. We generalise the Fourier space estimator for $E_{\rm G}$ to include HI as a biased tracer of matter and forecast statistical errors using HI clustering and lensing surveys that can be performed in the near future, in combination with ongoing and forthcoming optical galaxy and Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) surveys. We find that fractional errors $< 1\%$ in the $E_{\rm G}$ measurement can be ac…
Flexion is the weak lensing effect responsible for the weakly skewed and arc-like appearance of lensed galaxies. The flexion signal-to-noise ratio can be an order of magnitude larger than that of shear. For the first time, we show how this makes flexion an invaluable tool for discriminating among alternative cosmological models. We analyse a scalar field model of unified dark matter and dark energy, a brane-world cosmology and two f(R) modified-action theories. We show that these models can be distinguished from LCDM at several standard deviations by measuring the power spectrum of cosmic flex…
Peculiar-velocity surveys of the low-redshift universe have significant leverage to constrain the growth rate of cosmic structure and test gravity. Wide-field imaging surveys combined with multi-object spectrographs (e.g. ZTF2, LSST, DESI, 4MOST) can use Type Ia supernovae as informative tracers of the velocity field, reaching few percent constraints on the growth rate $fσ_8$ at $z\lesssim0.2$ where density tracers cannot do better than $\sim10\%$. Combining the high-redshift DESI survey mapping redshift space distortions with a low-redshift supernova peculiar velocity survey using LSST and DE…
The theoretical basis of dark energy remains unknown and could signify a need to modify the laws of gravity on cosmological scales. In this study we investigate how the clustering and motions of galaxies can be used as probes of modified gravity theories, using galaxy and direct peculiar velocity auto- and cross-correlation functions. We measure and fit these correlation functions in simulations of $Λ$CDM, DGP, and $f(R)$ cosmologies and, by extracting the characteristic parameters of each model, we show that these theories can be distinguished from General Relativity using these measurements.…
We test the predictions of Emergent Gravity using matter densities of relaxed, massive clusters of galaxies using observations from optical and X-ray wavebands. We improve upon previous work in this area by including the baryon mass contribution of the brightest cluster galaxy in each system, in addition to total mass profiles from gravitational lensing and mass profiles of the X-ray emitting gas from Chandra. We use this data in the context of Emergent Gravity to predict the "apparent" dark matter distribution from the observed baryon distribution, and vice-versa. We find that although the in…
Numerical simulations in modified gravity have commonly been performed under the quasi-static approximation -- that is, by neglecting the effect of time derivatives in the equation of motion of the scalar field that governs the fifth force in a given modified gravity theory. To test the validity of this approximation, we analyse the case of $f(R)$ gravity beyond this quasi-static limit, by considering effects, if any, these terms have in the matter and velocity divergence cosmic fields. To this end, we use the adaptive mesh refinement code ECOSMOG to study three variants ($|f_{R}|= 10^{-4}[$F4…
A new effect is described by which primordial gravity waves leave a permanent signature in the large scale structure of the Universe. The effect occurs at second order in perturbation theory and is sensitive to the order in which perturbations on different scales are generated. We derive general forecasts for the detectability of the effect with future experiments, and consider observations of the pre-reionization gas through the 21 cm line. It is found that the Square Kilometre Array will not be competitive with current cosmic microwave background constraints on primordial gravity waves from …
We use a range of cosmological data to constrain phenomenological modifications to general relativity on cosmological scales, through modifications to the Poisson and lensing equations. We include cosmic microwave background anisotropy measurements from the Planck satellite, cosmic shear from CFHTLenS and DES-SV, and redshift-space distortions from BOSS data release 12 and the 6dF galaxy survey. We find no evidence of departures from general relativity, with the modified gravity parameters constrained to $Σ_0 = 0.05^{+0.05}_{-0.07}$ and $μ_0 = -0.10^{+0.20}_{-0.16}$, where $Σ_0$ and $μ_0$ refe…
We provide a cosmological test of modified gravity with two tensorial degrees of freedom and no extra propagating scalar mode. The theory of gravity we consider admits a cosmological model that is indistinguishable from the $Λ$CDM model at the level of the background evolution. The model has a single modified-gravity parameter $β$, the effect of which can be seen in linear perturbations, though no extra scalar mode is propagating. Using the Boltzmann code modified to incorporate the present model, we derive the constraints $-0.047 < β< -0.028$ at 68$\%$ confidence from Planck CMB data. Since o…
The direct detection of gravitational waves (GW) from merging binary black holes and neutron stars mark the beginning of a new era in gravitational physics, and it brings forth new opportunities to test theories of gravity. To this end, it is crucial to search for anomalous deviations from general relativity in a model-independent way, irrespective of gravity theories, GW sources, and background spacetimes. In this paper, we propose a new universal framework for testing gravity with GW, based on the generalized propagation of a GW in an effective field theory that describes modification of gra…
A Bayesian statistical analysis using redshift space distortions data is performed to test a model of Symmetric Teleparallel Gravity where gravity is non-metrical. The cosmological background mimics a $Λ$CDM evolution but differences arise in the perturbations. The linear matter fluctuations are numerically evolved and the study of the growth rate of structures is analysed in this cosmological setting. The best fit parameters reveal that the $σ_8$ tension between Planck and Large Scale Structure data can be alleviated within this framework.
Among the available quantum gravity proposals, string theory, loop quantum gravity, non-commutative geometry, group field theory, causal sets, asymptotic safety, causal dynamical triangulation, emergent gravity are among the best motivated models. As an introductory summary to this special issue of Comptes Rendus Physique, I explain how those different theories can be tested or constrained by cosmological observations.
It is widely believed that the leading secular loop corrections from quantum gravity can be subsumed into a coordinate redefinition. Hence the apparent infrared logarithm corrections to any quantity would be just the result of taking the expectation value of the tree order quantity at the transformed coordinates in the graviton vacuum. We term this the Transformation Ansatz and we compare its predictions against explicit one loop computations in Maxwell + Einstein and Dirac + Einstein on de Sitter background. In each case the ansatz fails.
We explore the possibility of testing modified gravity exhibiting the Vainshtein mechanism against observations of cluster lensing. We work in the most general scalar-tensor theory with second-order field equations (Horndeski's theory), and derive static and spherically symmetric solutions, for which the scalar field is screened below a certain radius. It is found that the essential structure of the problem in the most general case can be captured by the program of classifying Vainshtein solutions out of different solutions to a quintic equation, as has been performed in the context of massive…
A violation of the distance-duality relation is directly linked with a temporal variation of the electromagnetic fine-structure constant. We consider a number of well-studied $f(T)$ gravity models and we revise the theoretical prediction of their corresponding induced violation of the distance-duality relationship. We further extract constraints on the involved model parameters through fine-structure constant variation data, alongside with supernovae data, and Hubble parameter measurements. Moreover, we constrain the evolution of the effective $f(T)$ gravitational constant. Finally, we compare…
Long range scalar fields with a coupling to matter appear to violate known bounds on gravitation in the solar system and the laboratory. This is evaded thanks to screening mechanisms. In this short review, we shall present the various screening mechanisms from an effective field theory point of view. We then investigate how they can and will be tested in the laboratory and on astrophysical and cosmological scales.
The Brans-Dicke theory of gravity is one of the oldest ideas to extend general relativity by introducing a non-minimal coupling between the scalar field and gravity. The Solar System tests put tight constraints on the theory. In order to evade these constraints, various screening mechanisms have been proposed. These screening mechanisms allow the scalar field to couple to matter as strongly as gravity in low density environments while suppressing it in the Solar System. The Vainshtein mechanism, which is found in various modified gravity models such as massive gravity, braneworld models and sc…
One of the main objectives of stage IV galaxy surveys is to constrain gravity on cosmological scales. To this end, it is crucial to make accurate theoretical predictions in the nonlinear regime of structure formation in order to maximise the scientific return. This is possible at a relatively low computational cost thanks to COLA simulations, an approximate and much faster alternative to full $N$-body simulations. In this thesis, we focus on two modified gravity theories, $f(R)$ and nDGP, and present an analysis of how COLA simulations can be combined with empirical models for the galaxy-halo …
We discuss the emergence of scalar gravitational waves in metric-affine f(R)-gravity. Such a component allows to discriminate between metric and metric-affine theories The intrinsic meaning of this result is that the geodesic structure of the theory can be discriminated. We extend the formalism of cross correlation analysis, including the additional polarization mode, and calculate the detectable energy density of the spectrum for cosmological relic gravitons. The possible detection of the signal is discussed against sensitivities of VIRGO, LIGO and LISA interferometers.
Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) offers one of the most strict evidences for the Lambda-CDM cosmology at present, as well as the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation. In this work, our main aim is to present the outcomes of our calculations related to primordial abundances of light elements, in the context of higher dimensional steady-state universe model in the dilaton gravity. Our results show that abundances of light elements (primordial D, 3He, 4He, T, 7Li) are significantly different for some cases, and a comparison is given between a particular dilaton gravity model and Lambda-CDM i…
Modified Gravity (MOG) and Non-Local Gravity (NLG) are two alternative theories to General Relativity. They are able to explain the rotation curves of spiral galaxies and clusters of galaxies without including dark matter (Moffat & Rahvar 2013, 2014; Rahvar & Mashhoon 2014). In the weak-field approximation these two theories have similar forms, with an effective gravitational potential that has two components: (i) Newtonian gravity with the gravitational constant enhanced by a factor $(1+α)$ and (ii) a Yukawa type potential that produces a repulsive force with length scale $1/μ$. In this work …
Various approaches to quantum gravity such as string theory, loop quantum gravity and Horava-Lifshitz gravity predict modifications of the energy-momentum dispersion relation. Magueijo and Smolin incorporated the modified dispersion relation (MDR) with the general theory of relativity to yield a theory of gravity's rainbow. In this paper, we investigate the Schwarzschild metric in the context of gravity's rainbow. We investigate rainbow functions from three known modified dispersion relations that were introduced by Amelino-Camelia, et el. in [arXiv:hep-th/9605211, arXiv:0806.0339v2, arXiv:ast…
Model-independent parametrisations of modified gravity have attracted a lot of attention over the past few years and numerous combinations of experiments and observables have been suggested to constrain the parameters used in these models. Galaxy clusters have been mentioned, but not looked at as extensively in the literature as some other probes. Here we look at adding galaxy clusters into the mix of observables and examine how they could improve the constraints on the modified gravity parameters. In particular, we forecast the constraints from combining Planck satellite Cosmic Microwave Back…
We show that modified gravity presents distinctive nonlinear features on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies comparing with General Relativity (GR). We calculate the contribution to the CMB non-Gaussianity from nonlinear Sachs-Wolfe effect in $f(R)$ gravity and show that, contrary to GR's contribution which is typically $\lesssim \mathcal{O}(1)$, the contribution in $f(R)$ gravity is sensitive to the nonlinear structure of $f(R)$ and can be large in principle. Optimistically, this gives an alternative origin for the possibly observed large CMB non-Gaussianities besides the primo…
We introduce a patch to the commonly used public codes CAMB and CosmoMC that allows the user to implement a general modification of the equations describing the growth of cosmological perturbations, while preserving the covariant conservation of the energy-momentum. This patch replaces the previously publicly released code MGCAMB, while also extending it in several ways. The new version removes the limitation of late-time-only modifications to the perturbed Einstein equations, and includes several parametrization introduced in the literature. To demonstrate the use of the patch, we obtain join…
We test Einstein gravity using cosmological observations of both expansion and structure growth, including the latest data from supernovae (Union2.1), CMB (WMAP7), weak lensing (CFHTLS) and peculiar velocity of galaxies (WiggleZ). We fit modified gravity parameters of the generalized Poisson equations simultaneously with the effective equation of state for the background evolution, exploring the covariances and model dependence. The results show that general relativity is a good fit to the combined data. Using a Pad{é} approximant form for the gravity deviations accurately captures the time an…
We study the impact of the limit on $|\dot{G}|/G$ from Lunar Laser Ranging on "nonlocal gravity", i.e. on models of the quantum effective action of gravity that include nonlocal terms relevant in the infrared, such as the "RR" and "RT" models proposed by our group, and the Deser-Woodard (DW) model. We elaborate on the analysis of Barreira et al. [1] and we confirm their findings that (under plausible assumptions such as the absence of strong backreaction from non-linear structures), the RR model is ruled out. We also show that the mechanism of "perfect screening for free" suggested for the DW …
Modified gravity has garnered interest as a backstop against dark matter and dark energy (DE). As one possible modification, the graviton can become massive, which introduces a new scalar field - here with a Galileon-type symmetry. The field can lead to a nontrivial equation of state (EOS) of DE which is density-and-scale-dependent. Tension between Type Ia supernovae and Planck could be reduced. In voids the scalar field dramatically alters the EOS of DE, induces a soon-observable gravitational slip between the two metric potentials, and develops a topological defect (domain wall) due to a non…
We examine the viability of Weyl conformal gravity as an alternative to the general theory of relativity. By using the extended rotation curve of the Milky Way and velocity dispersions of four globular clusters, we show that Weyl gravity predictions without resorting to dark matter comply with observations at the galactic scale. For the Milky Way, we demonstrate that the uncertainty in baryonic modelling results a bracket of possible rotational velocities which well encompasses the diversity in rotation curve construction. Such diversity generally arises from differences in measurements of vel…
Modifications to GR generically predict time and scale-dependent effects which may be probed by observations of strong lensing by galaxies. Measurements of the stellar velocity dispersion determine the dynamical mass whereas measurements of the Einstein radius determine the lensing mass. In GR these two masses are equal; in alternative gravity theories they may not be. Using measurements of the stellar velocity dispersion and strong lensing around galaxies from the Sloan Lens ACS (SLACS) survey we place constraints on lensing in modified gravity theories and extend previous studies by applying…
We analyse the MOdified Gravity (MOG) theory, proposed by Moffat, in a cosmological context. We use data from Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia), Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and Cosmic Chronometers (CC) to test MOG predictions. For this, we perform $χ^2$ tests considering fixed values of $H_0$ and $V_G$, the self-interaction potential of one of the scalar fields in the theory. Our results show that the MOG theory is in agreement with all data sets for some particular values of $H_0$ and $V_G$, being the BAO data set the most powerful tool to test MOG predictions, due to its constraining power.
Recently, the author proposed an alternative vector theory of gravity. To the best of our knowledge, vector gravity also passes available tests of gravity, and, in addition, predicts the correct value of the cosmological constant without free parameters. It is important to find a new feasible test which can distinguish between vector gravity and general relativity and determine whether gravity has a vector or a tensor origin. Here we propose such an experiment based on measurement of propagation direction of gravitational waves relative to the perpendicular arms of a laser interferometer. We s…
Verlinde's theory of Emergent Gravity (EG) describes gravity as an emergent phenomenon rather than a fundamental force. Applying this reasoning in de Sitter space leads to gravity behaving differently on galaxy and galaxy cluster scales; this excess gravity might offer an alternative to dark matter. Here we test these ideas using the data from the Coma cluster and from 58 stacked galaxy clusters. The X-ray surface brightness measurements of the clusters at $0.1 < z < 1.2$ along with the weak lensing data are used to test the theory. We find that the simultaneous EG fits of the X-ray and weak l…
The properties of gravitational-wave (GW) propagation are modified in alternative theories of gravity and are crucial observables to test gravity at cosmological distance. The propagation speed has already been measured from GW170817 so precisely and pinned down to the speed of light, while other properties of GW propagation have not constrained tightly yet. In this paper, we investigate the measurement precisions of the amplitude damping rate (equivalently, the time variation of the gravitational coupling for GWs) and graviton mass in the generalized framework of GW propagation with the futur…
Verlinde (2016) has proposed a new modified theory of gravity, Emergent Gravity (EG), as an alternative to dark matter. EG reproduces the Tully-Fisher relationship with no free parameters and agrees with the velocity curves of most massive, spiral galaxies well. In its current form, the theory only applies to isolated, spherically symmetric systems in a dark energy-dominated Universe, and thus can only be tested fairly with such systems. This paper presents a framework for rotation curve tests of EG using isolated dwarf galaxies. Here I extend the EG equations to axisymmetric distributions for…
Gravitational waves (GW) are generally affected by modification of a gravity theory during propagation in cosmological distance. We numerically perform a quantitative analysis on Horndeski theory at cosmological scale to constrain the Horndeski theory by GW observations in model-independent way. We formulate a parameterization for a numerical simulation based on the Monte Carlo method and obtain the classification of the models that agrees with cosmic accelerating expansion within observational errors of the Hubble parameter. As a result, we find that a large group of the models in the Horndes…
The strong equivalence principle is violated by gravity theories of Milgromian dynamics (MOND) through the action of the external field effect. We test two different Lagrangian theories AQUAL and QUMOND based on their numerical solutions of the external field effect, by comparing two independent estimates of the mean external field strength of the nearby universe: a theory-deduced value from fitting the outer rotation curves of 114 galaxies and an empirical value from the large-scale distribution of cosmic baryons. The AQUAL-deduced external field strength from rotation curves agrees with that…
This thesis introduces a set of methods for testing models of modified gravity using galaxy clusters. In particular, a technique for constraining models with a chameleon screening is introduced. In addition, the outlined technique is expanded to test a wider class of models, such as the theory of emergent gravity. Finally, the first part of the thesis is concluded by adapting the mentioned tests for model independent constraints. The obtained results indicate that galaxy clusters can be used to obtain some of the most powerful constraints on cosmological scales. The second part of the thesis i…
We present a new test of the modified gravity endowed with the Vainshtein mechanism with the density profile of a galaxy cluster halo observed through gravitational lensing. A scalar degree of freedom in the galileon modified gravity is screened by the Vainshtein mechanism to recover Newtonian gravity in high-density regions, however it might not be completely hidden on the outer side of a cluster of galaxies. Then the modified gravity might yield an observational signature in a surface mass density of a cluster of galaxies measured through gravitational lensing, since the scalar field could c…
The weak field limit for a pointlike source of a $f(R) \propto R^{3/2}$-gravity model is studied. We aim to show the viability of such a model as a valid alternative to GR + dark matter at Galactic and local scales. Without considering dark matter, within the weak field approximation, we find general exact solutions for gravity with standard matter, and apply them to some astrophysical scales, recovering the consistency of the same $f(R)$-gravity model with cosmological results.}{In particular, we show that it is possible to obtain flat rotation curves for galaxies, [and consistency with] Sola…
Modified theories of gravity have received a renewed interest due to their ability to account for the cosmic acceleration. In order to satisfy the solar system tests of gravity, these theories need to include a screening mechanism that hides the modifications on small scales. One popular and well-studied theory is chameleon gravity. Our own galaxy is necessarily screened, but less dense dwarf galaxies may be unscreened and their constituent stars can exhibit novel features. In particular, unscreened stars are brighter, hotter and more ephemeral than screened stars in our own galaxy. They also …
Inspired by quantum gravitational physics, the approach of non-commutative (NC) phase space leads to a modified dispersion relation of gravitational waves. This feature, if applied to the very early universe, gives rise to a modified power spectrum of primordial tensor perturbations with a suppression of power on large scales. We confront this phenomenon with the BICEP2 and Planck experiments, and show that inflation with the modified dispersion relation can simultaneously fit the observations better than the standard inflationary paradigm. In particular, the numerical result implies that with…
The dynamics of globular clusters has been studied in great detail in the context of general relativity as well as with modifications of gravity that strongly depart from the standard paradigm such as MOND. However, at present there are no studies that aim to test the impact that less extreme modifications of gravity (e.g. models constructed as alternatives to dark energy) have on the behaviour of globular clusters. This Letter presents fits to the velocity dispersion profile of the cluster NGC 2419 under the symmetron modified gravity model. The data shows an increase in the velocity dispersi…
Extreme-Mass-Ratio Inspirals (EMRIs) are one of the most promising sources of gravitational waves (GWs) for space-based detectors like the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). EMRIs consist of a compact stellar object orbiting around a massive black hole (MBH). Since EMRI signals are expected to be long lasting (containing of the order of hundred thousand cycles), they will encode the structure of the MBH gravitational potential in a precise way such that features depending on the theory of gravity governing the system may be distinguished. That is, EMRI signals may be used to test gravi…
Generic scalar-tensor theories of gravity predict deviations from Newtonian physics inside astrophysical bodies. In this paper, we point out that low mass stellar objects, red and brown dwarf stars, are excellent probes of these theories. We calculate two important and potentially observable quantities: the radius of brown dwarfs and the minimum mass for hydrogen burning in red dwarfs. The brown dwarf radius can differ significantly from the GR prediction and upcoming surveys that probe the mass-radius relation for stars with masses $<\mathcal{O}(0.1M_\odot)$ have the potential to place new co…
Verlinde (2016) has recently proposed that spacetime and gravity may emerge from an underlying microscopic theory. In a de Sitter spacetime, such emergent gravity (EG) contains an additional gravitational force due to dark energy, which may explain the mass discrepancies observed in galactic systems without the need of dark matter. For a point mass, EG is equivalent to Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND). We show that this equivalence does not hold for finite-size galaxies: there are significant differences between EG and MOND in the inner regions of galaxies. We confront theoretical prediction…
We present the first analysis of extended stellar kinematics of elliptical galaxies where a Yukawa--like correction to the Newtonian gravitational potential derived from f(R)-gravity is considered as an alternative to dark matter. In this framework, we model long-slit data and planetary nebulae data out to 7 Re of three galaxies with either decreasing or flat dispersion profiles. We use the corrected Newtonian potential in a dispersion-kurtosis Jeans analysis to account for the mass-anisotropy degeneracy. We find that these modified potentials are able to fit nicely all three elliptical galaxi…
Extended theories of gravity have been extensively investigated during the last thirty years, aiming at fixing infrared and ultraviolet shortcomings of General Relativity and of the associated $Λ$CDM cosmological model. Recently, non-local theories of gravity have drawn increasing attention due to their potential to ameliorate both the ultraviolet and infrared behavior of gravitational interaction. In particular, Integral Kernel theories of Gravity provide a viable mechanism to explain the late time cosmic acceleration so as to avoid the introduction of any form of unknown dark energy. On the …
We study the cosmic microwave background (CMB) in the framework of the degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theory to test gravity theories. This theoretical framework includes the wide class of dark energy models such as the Horndeski theory and its extensions as certain limits, and the general relativity can be also recovered. In this study, to test gravity theories with CMB, we formulate the linear perturbations of gravity and matter in the theory and their effective description parameterised by time-dependent effective field theory (EFT) parameters, $α_i$ $(i=B,K,T,M,H,L)$ and $β_…
