It is widely believed that the leading secular loop corrections from quantum gravity can be subsumed into a coordinate redefinition. Hence the apparent infrared logarithm corrections to any quantity would be just the result of taking the expectation value of the tree order quantity at the transformed coordinates in the graviton vacuum. We term this the Transformation Ansatz and we compare its predictions against explicit one loop computations in Maxwell + Einstein and Dirac + Einstein on de Sitter background. In each case the ansatz fails.
We investigate the initial state of the inflationary universe. In our recent publications, we showed that requesting the gauge invariance in the local observable universe to the initial state guarantees the infrared (IR) regularity of loop corrections in a general single clock inflation. Following this study, in this paper, we show that choosing the Euclidean vacuum ensures the gauge invariance in the local universe and hence the IR regularity of loop corrections. It has been suggested that loop corrections to inflationary perturbations may yield the secular growth, which can lead to the break…
In this paper we revisit and extend a previous analysis where the possible relevance of quantum gravity effects in a cosmological setup was studied. The object of interest are non-local (logarithmic) terms generated in the effective action of gravity due to the exchange in loops of massless modes (such as photons or the gravitons themselves). We correct one mistake existing in the previous work and discuss the issue in a more general setting in different cosmological scenarios. We obtain the one-loop quantum-corrected evolution equations for the cosmological scale factor up to a given order in…
We study the dynamics of a homogeneous, isotropic, and positively curved universe in the presence of a SU(2) gauge field or a triplet of mutually orthogonal vector fields. In the SU(2) case we use the previously known ansatz for the gauge-field configuration, but the case without non-abelian symmetries is more nontrivial and we develop a new ansatz. We in particular consider axion-SU(2) inflation and inflation with vector fields having U(1)$\times$U(1)$\times$U(1) symmetry, and analyze their dynamics in detail numerically. Novel effects of the spatial curvature come into play through vector fi…
It has been claimed that the super Hubble modes of the graviton generated during inflation can make loop corrections diverge. Even if we introduce an infrared (IR) cutoff at a comoving scale as an ad hoc but a practical way for the regularization, we encounter the secular growth, which may lead to the breakdown of perturbative expansion for a sufficiently long lasting inflation. In this paper, we show that the IR pathology concerning the graviton can be attributed to the presence of residual gauge degrees of freedom in the local observable universe as in the case of the adiabatic curvature per…
We use dimensional regularization in pure quantum gravity on de Sitter background to evaluate the one loop expectation value of an invariant operator which gives the local expansion rate. We show that the renormalization of this nonlocal composite operator can be accomplished using the counterterms of a simple local theory of gravity plus matter, at least at one loop order. This renormalization completely absorbs the one loop correction, which accords with the prediction that the lowest secular back-reaction should be a 2-loop effect.
We compute the graviton one-loop correction to the expectation value of the local expansion rate in slow-roll inflation, with both slow-roll parameters finite. The calculation is based on a recent method to explicitly construct gauge-invariant observables in perturbative quantum gravity at all orders in perturbation theory, and it is particularly suited in cases of highly-symmetrical space-time backgrounds. Our analysis adds to recent calculations of that correction in de Sitter space-time and in single-field inflation with constant deceleration. In the former case a vanishing one-loop correct…
The possibility that quantum corrections break the conservation of superhorizon adiabatic perturbations in single field inflation is examined. I consider the lowest order corrections from massless matter fields in the Hamiltonian formalism. Particular emphasis is therefore laid on the renormalization. The counterterms are the same as in the Lagrangian formalism. The renormalized value of the tadpole is zero. I find a possible secular dependence of the power spectrum at one loop due to the trace anomaly, but this result depends on the approximation of the modes and is inconclusive. The symmetry…
We employ a fully renormalized computation of the one loop contribution to the self-mass-squared of the conformally coupled (CC) scalar interacting with gravitons during inflation to study how inflationary produced gravitons affect the CC scalar evolution equation. The quantum corrected scalar mode functions turn out to get a secular growth effect, proportional to a logarithm of the scale factor at late times.
We consider five-dimensional, vacuum Einstein equations with negative cosmological constant within cohomogenity-two biaxial Bianchi IX ansatz. This model allows to investigate the stability of AdS without adding any matter to the energy-momentum tensor, thus analyzing instability of genuine gravtational degrees of freedom. We derive the resonant system and identify vanishing secular terms. The results resemble those obtained for Einstein equations coupled to a spherically-symmetric, massless scalar field, backing the evidence that the scalar field model captures well the relevant features of A…
We use dimensional regularization to compute the one loop quantum gravitational contribution to the vacuum polarization on de Sitter background. Adding the appropriate BPHZ counterterms gives a fully renormalized result which can be used to quantum correct Maxwell's equations. We use the Hartree approximation to argue that the electric field strengths of photons experience a secular suppression during inflation.
We review the recent progress regarding the loop corrections to the correlation functions in the inflationary universe. A naive perturbation theory predicts that loop corrections generated during inflation suffer from various infrared (IR) pathologies. Introducing an IR cutoff by hand is not only unsatisfactory but also does not fix the problem of secular growth, which may ruin the predictive power of inflation models if the inflation lasts sufficiently long. We discuss the origin of the IR divergences and explore the regularity conditions of loop corrections for the adiabatic perturbation, th…
In this paper we consider the cosmological inflation within scalar-tensor gravity and compare it with standard inflation based on general relativity. The difference is determined by the value of the parameter $Δ$. This approach is associated with using the special ansatz which links a function that defines a type of gravity with a scale factor of the universe.
We study the possibility that inflation is driven by a massive vector field with SO(3) global symmetry nonminimally coupled to gravity. From an E^3-invariant Robertson-Walker metric we propose an Ansatz for the vector field, allowing us to study the evolution of the system. We study the behaviour of the equations of motion using the methods of the theory of dynamical systems and find exponential inflationary regimes.
We investigate a (super-)renormalizable and ghost-free theory of gravity, showing that under a natural (exponential) ansatz of the form factor and a suitable truncation it can give rise to the Starobinsky inflationary theory in cosmological frameworks, and thus offering a theoretical justification of its origin. We study the corresponding inflationary evolution and we examine the generation of curvature perturbations, adapting the $f(R)$-like equations in a symmetry-reduced FLRW metric. Furthermore, we analyze how the ultraviolet regime of a simply renormalizable and unitary theory of gravity …
A naive computation of the correlation functions of fluctuations generated during inflation suffers from logarithmic divergences in the infrared (IR) limit. In this paper, we propose one way to solve this IR divergence problem in the single-field inflation model. The key observation is that the variables that are commonly used in describing fluctuations are influenced by what we cannot observe. Introducing a new perturbation variable which mimics what we actually observe, we propose a new prescription to solve the time evolution of perturbation in which this leakage of information from the uno…
We demonstrate the existence of a secular back-reaction on inflation using a simple scalar model. The model consists of a massless, minimally coupled scalar with a quartic self-interaction which is a spectator to $Λ$-driven inflation. To avoid problems with coincident propagators, and to make the scalars interact more like gravitons, we impose a covariant normal ordering prescription which has the effect of removing tadpole graphs. This version of the theory exhibits a secular slowing at three loop order due to interactions between virtual infrared scalars which are ripped apart by the inflati…
We consider the quantum gravitational back-reaction on an initially inflating, homogeneous and isotropic universe whose topology is $T^3 \times \Re$. Although there is no secular effect at one loop, an explicit calculation shows that two-loop processes act to slow the rate of expansion by an amount which becomes non-perturbatively large at late times. By exploiting Feynman's tree theorem we show that all higher loops act in the same sense.
We consider a universe in which inflation commences because of a positive cosmological constant, the effect of which is progressively screened by the interaction between virtual gravitons that become trapped in the expansion of spacetime. Perturbative calculations have shown that screening becomes non-perturbatively large at late times. In this paper we consider effective field equations which can be evolved numerically to provide a non-perturbative description of the process. The induced stress tensor is that of an effective scalar field which is a non-local functional of the metric. We use t…
From a general ansatz for the effective potential of cosmological perturbations we find new, exact solutions in single-scalar-field inflation: a three parameter family of exact inflationary solutions that encompasses all exact solutions that have been known previously (power-law inflation, Easther's model, and a generalised version of Starobinsky's solution). The main feature of this new family is that the spectral indices are scale dependent.
During inflation explicit perturbative computations of quantum field theories which contain massless, non-conformal fields exhibit secular effects that grow as powers of the logarithm of the inflationary scale factor. Starobinski\uı's technique of stochastic inflation not only reproduces the leading infrared logarithms at each order in perturbation theory, it can sometimes be summed to reveal what happens when inflation has proceeded so long that the large logarithms overwhelm even very small coupling constants. It is thus a cosmological analogue of what the renormalization group does for the …
We consider the spatially flat Friedmann model. For a(t) = t^p, especially, if p is larger or equal to 1, this is called power-law inflation. For the Lagrangian L = R^m with p = - (m - 1)(2m - 1)/(m - 2), power-law inflation is an exact solution, as it is for Einstein gravity with a minimally coupled scalar field Phi in an exponential potential V(Phi) = exp(mu Phi) and also for the higher-dimensional Einstein equation with a special Kaluza-Klein ansatz. The synchronized coordinates are not adapted to allow a closed-form solution, so we use another gauge. Finally, special solutions for the clos…

Though simple inflationary models describe the CMB well, their corrections are often plagued by infrared effects that obstruct a reliable calculation of late-time behaviour. We adapt to cosmology tools designed to address similar issues in other physical systems with the goal of making reliable late-time inflationary predictions. The main such tool is Open EFTs which reduce in the inflationary case to Stochastic Inflation plus calculable corrections. We apply this to a simple inflationary model that is complicated enough to have dangerous IR behaviour yet simple enough to allow the inference o…
We study the power spectrum of super-Hubble fluctuations of an inflaton-like scalar field, the "system", coupled to another scalar field, the "environment" during de Sitter inflation. We obtain the reduced density matrix for the inflaton fluctuations by integrating out the environmental degrees of freedom. These are considered to be massless and conformally coupled to gravity as a \emph{proxy} to describe degrees of freedom that remain sub-Hubble all throughout inflation. The time evolution of the density matrix is described by a quantum master equation, which describes the decay of the vacuum…
We use an invariant operator to study the quantum gravitational back-reaction to scalar perturbations during chaotic inflation. Our operator is the inverse covariant d'Alembertian expressed as a function of the local value of the inflaton. In the slow roll approximation this observable gives $-1/(2 H^2)$ for an arbitrary homogeneous and isotropic geometry, hence it is a good candidate for measuring the local expansion rate even when the spacetime is not perfectly homogeneous and isotropic. Corrections quadratic in the scalar creation and annihilation operators of the initial value surface are …
We consider the presence and evolution of primordial density perturbations in a cosmological model based on a simple ansatz which captures -- by providing a set of effective gravitational field equations -- the strength of the enhanced quantum loop effects that can arise during inflation. After deriving the general equations that perturbations obey, we concentrate on scalar perturbations and show that their evolution is quite different than that of conventional inflationary models but still phenomenologically acceptable. The main reason for this novel evolution is the presence of an oscillatin…
We compute the one- and two-loop corrected mode function of a massless minimally coupled scalar endowed with a quartic self-interaction in the locally de Sitter background of an inflating universe for a state which is released in Bunch-Davies vacuum at time $t=0$. We then employ it to correct the scalar's tree-order scale invariant power spectrum $Δ^2_φ$. The corrections are secular, and have scale dependent part that can be expanded in even powers of $k/(Ha)$, where $k$ is the comoving wave number, $H$ is the expansion rate and $a$ is the cosmic scale factor. At one-loop, the scale invariant …
The anisotropic Bianchi type I in multi-scalar field cosmology is studied with a particular potential of the form $\rm V= V_0 e^{-\left[λ_1 ϕ_1 + \cdots + λ_n ϕ_n \right]}\,,$ which emerges as a condition between the time derivatives of their corresponding momenta. Using the Hamiltonian formalism for the inflation epoch with a quintessence framework we find the exact solutions for the Einstein-Klein-Gordon (EKG) system with different scenarios specified by the parameter $\rm λ^2= \sum_{i=1}^n λ_i^2$. For the quantum scheme of this model, the corresponding Wheeler-DeWitt (WDW) equation is solve…
Scalar and tensor cosmological perturbations during an inflationary universe scenario in the context of the a generalized gravity theory are studied. This analyze is carried out considering an ansatz on the variables associated to scalar and tensor perturbation ($z_s$ and $z_t$) in the Jordan frame. In this context, we analyze two different Ansatze for the ratio $z_s/z_t$, and we study in great detail the analytical and exact solutions for the cosmological perturbations together with the corresponding reconstruction of the background variables. Recent observational data from the Planck 2018 re…
We obtain the non-equilibrium effective action of an inflaton like scalar field --the system-- by tracing over sub Hubble degrees of freedom of "environmental" light scalar fields. The effective action is stochastic leading to effective Langevin equations of motion for the fluctuations of the inflaton-like field, with self-energy corrections and stochastic noise correlators that obey a de Sitter space-time analog of a fluctuation dissipation relation. We solve the Langevin equation implementing a dynamical renormalization group resummation of the leading secular terms and obtain the correction…
Energy Momentum Squared Gravity (EMSG) is a cosmological model where the scale factor is non vanishing at all times and hence does not favor big bang cosmology. However, the profile of density in the radiation dominated universe shows that EMSG supports inflationary cosmology. Inflationary cosmological models are successful in providing convincing answers to major cosmological issues like horizon problem, flatness problem and small value of cosmological constant but hitherto no model of inflation has been observationally confirmed. Owing to this, Varying Speed of Light (VSL) were introduced wh…
Light scalars in inflationary spacetimes suffer from logarithmic infrared divergences at every order in perturbation theory. This corresponds to the scalar field values in different Hubble patches undergoing a random walk of quantum fluctuations, leading to a simple toy "landscape" on superhorizon scales, in which we can explore questions relevant to eternal inflation. However, for a sufficiently long period of inflation, the infrared divergences appear to spoil computability. Some form of renormalization group approach is thus motivated to resum the log divergences of conformal time. Such a r…
The Einstein static (ES) state is a good candidate for describing the very early universe in terms of a regular cosmological model in which the Big Bang singularity is avoided. In the present study we propose an ES solution in the framework of generalized Rastall gravity (GRG), a modified version of original Rastall theory in which the coupling parameter is allowed to vary with respect to the spacetime coordinates. Introducing an ansatz for the Rastall parameter, existence and the corresponding stability of the solutions are investigated. We show that the GRG is capable of describing a stable …
