We show that some recent constructions in the literature, named `weak' generalizations, can be systematically treated by passing from 2-categories to categories enriched in the Cartesian monoidal category of Cauchy complete categories.
We develop a general framework for studying signatures, presentations, and algebraic colimits of enriched monads for a subcategory of arities, even when the base of enrichment $\mathcal{V}$ is not locally presentable. When $\mathcal{V}$ satisfies the weaker requirement of local boundedness, the resulting framework is sufficiently general to apply to the $Φ$-accessible monads of Lack and Rosický and the $\mathcal{J}$-ary monads of the first author, while even without local boundedness our framework captures in full generality the presentations of strongly finitary monads of Lack and Kelly as we…
We define and study a probability monad on the category of complete metric spaces and short maps. It assigns to each space the space of Radon probability measures on it with finite first moment, equipped with the Kantorovich-Wasserstein distance. This monad is analogous to the Giry monad on the category of Polish spaces, and it extends a construction due to van Breugel for compact and for 1-bounded complete metric spaces. We prove that this Kantorovich monad arises from a colimit construction on finite power-like constructions, which formalizes the intuition that probability measures are limit…
We introduce a general construction on 2-monads. We develop background on maps of 2-monads, their left semi-algebras, and colimits in 2-category. Then, we introduce the construction of a colimit induced by a map of 2-monads, show that we obtain the structure of a 2-monad and give a characterisation of its algebras. Finally, we apply the construction to the map of 2-monads between free symmetric monoidal and the free cartesian 2-monads and combine them into a linear-non-linear 2-monad.
An object $P$ in a monoidal category $\mathcal{C}$ is called pivotal if its left dual and right dual objects are isomorphic. Given such an object and a choice of dual $Q$, we construct the category $\mathcal{C}(P,Q)$, of objects which intertwine with $P$ and $Q$ in a compatible manner. We show that this category lifts the monoidal structure of $\mathcal{C}$ and the closed structure of $\mathcal{C}$, when $\mathcal{C}$ is closed. If $\mathcal{C}$ has suitable colimits we show that $\mathcal{C}(P,Q)$ is monadic and thereby construct a family of Hopf monads on arbitrary closed monoidal categories…
Consider a monad on an idempotent complete triangulated category with the property that its Eilenberg-Moore category of modules inherits a triangulation. We show that any other triangulated adjunction realizing this monad is 'essentially monadic', i.e. becomes monadic after performing the two evident necessary operations of taking the Verdier quotient by the kernel of the right adjoint and idempotent completion. In this sense, the monad itself is 'intrinsically monadic'. It follows that for any highly structured ring spectrum, its category of homotopy (a.k.a. naive) modules is triangulated if …
Although the notion of crossed groups was originally introduced only in the simplicial case, the definition makes sense in the other categories. For instance, Batanin and Markl studied crossed interval groups to investigate symmetries on the Hochschild cohomology in view of operads. The aim of this paper is to make a comprehensive understanding of crossed groups for arbitrary base categories. In particular, we focus on the local presentability of the category of crossed groups, monadicity, and the basechange theorem along certain sorts of functors. The paper also contains the classification of…
Based on a study of the 2-category of weak distributive laws, we describe a method of iterating Street's weak wreath product construction. That is, for any 2-category K and for any non- negative integer n, we introduce 2-categories Wdl^{(n)}(K), of (n+1)-tuples of monads in K pairwise related by weak distributive laws obeying the Yang-Baxter equation . The first instance Wdl^{(0)}(K) coincides with Mnd(K), the usual 2-category of monads in K, and for other values of n, Wdl^{(n)}(K) contains Mnd^{n+1}(K) as a full 2-subcategory. For the local idempotent closure K^ of K, extending the multiplica…
A dagger category is a category equipped with a functorial way of reversing morphisms, i.e. a contravariant involutive identity-on-objects endofunctor. Dagger categories with additional structure have been studied under different names e.g. in categorical quantum mechanics and algebraic field theory. In this thesis we study the dagger in its own right and show how basic category theory adapts to dagger categories. We develop a notion of a dagger limit that we show is suitable in the following ways: it subsumes special cases known from the literature; dagger limits are unique up to unitary isom…
We outline the theory of reflections for prederivators, derivators and stable derivators. In order to parallel the classical theory valid for categories, we outline how reflections can be equivalently described as categories of fractions, reflective factorization systems, and categories of algebras for idempotent monads. This is a further development of the theory of monads and factorization systems for derivators.
While any infimum in a poset can also be computed as a supremum, and vice versa, categorical limits and colimits do not always approximate each other. If I approach a point from below, and you approach it from above, then we will surely meet if we live in a poset, but we may miss each other in a category. Can we characterize the limits and the colimits that approximate each other, and guarantee that we will meet? Such limits and colimits are called *tight*. Some critically important network applications depend on them. This paper characterizes tight limits and colimits, and describes tight com…
Probability theory can be studied synthetically as the computational effect embodied by a commutative monad. In the recently proposed Markov categories, one works with an abstraction of the Kleisli category and then defines deterministic morphisms equationally in terms of copying and discarding. The resulting difference between 'pure' and 'deterministic' leads us to investigate the 'sober' objects for a probability monad, for which the two concepts coincide. We propose natural conditions on a probability monad which allow us to identify the sober objects and define an idempotent sobrification …
We determine the existential completion of a primary doctrine, and we prove that the 2-monad obtained from it is lax-idempotent, and that the 2-category of existential doctrines is isomorphic to the 2-category of algebras for this 2-monad. We also show that the existential completion of an elementary doctrine is again elementary. Finally we extend the notion of exact completion of an elementary existential doctrine to an arbitrary elementary doctrine.
We introduce and study the Scott adjunction, relating accessible categories with directed colimits to topoi. Our focus is twofold, we study both its applications to formal model theory and its geometric interpretation. From the geometric point of view, we introduce the categorified Isbell duality, relating bounded (possibly large) ionads to topoi. The categorified Isbell duality interacts with the Scott adjunction offering a categorification of the Scott topology over a poset (hence the name). We show that the categorified Isbell duality is idempotent, similarly to its uncategorified version. …
The category of Hilbert modules may be interpreted as a naive quantum field theory over a base space. Open subsets of the base space are recovered as idempotent subunits, which form a meet-semilattice in any firm braided monoidal category. There is an operation of restriction to an idempotent subunit: it is a graded monad on the category, and has the universal property of algebraic localisation. Spacetime structure on the base space induces a closure operator on the idempotent subunits. Restriction is then interpreted as spacetime propagation. This lets us study relativistic quantum informatio…
