We study 2-monads and their algebras using a Cat-enriched version of Quillen model categories, emphasizing the parallels between the homotopical and 2-categorical points of view. Every 2-category with finite limits and colimits has a canonical model structure in which the weak equivalences are the equivalences; we use these to construct more interesting model structures on 2-categories, including a model structure on the 2-category of algebras for a 2-monad T, and a model structure on a 2-category of 2-monads on a fixed 2-category K.
We study the existence and left properness of transferred model structures for "monoid-like" objects in monoidal model categories. These include genuine monoids, but also all kinds of operads as for instance symmetric, cyclic, modular, higher operads, properads and PROP's. All these structures can be realised as algebras over polynomial monads. We give a general condition for a polynomial monad which ensures the existence and (relative) left properness of a transferred model structure for its algebras. This condition is of a combinatorial nature and singles out a special class of polynomial mo…
In this paper, we introduce a cofibrant simplicial category that we call the free homotopy coherent adjunction and characterize its n-arrows using a graphical calculus that we develop here. The hom-spaces are appropriately fibrant, indeed are nerves of categories, which indicates that all of the expected coherence equations in each dimension are present. To justify our terminology, we prove that any adjunction of quasi-categories extends to a homotopy coherent adjunction and furthermore that these extensions are homotopically unique in the sense that the relevant spaces of extensions are contr…
Lada introduced strong homotopy algebras to describe the structures on a deformation retract of an algebra in topological spaces. However, there is no satisfactory general definition of a morphism of strong homotopy (s.h.) algebras. Given a monad T on a simplicial category C, we instead show how s.h. T-algebras over C naturally form a Segal space. Given a distributive monad-comonad pair (T, S), the same is true for s.h. (T, S)-bialgebras over C; in particular this yields the homotopy theory of s.h. sheaves of s.h. rings. There are similar statements for quasi-monads and quasi-comonads. We also…
Many homotopy-coherent algebraic structures can be described by Segal-type limit conditions determined by an "algebraic pattern", bywhich we mean an $\infty$-category equipped with a factorization system and a collection of "elementary" objects. Examples of structures that occur as such "Segal $\mathcal{O}$-spaces" for an algebraic pattern $\mathcal{O}$ include $\infty$-categories, $(\infty,n)$-categories, $\infty$-operads, $\infty$-properads, and algebras for an $\infty$-operad in spaces. In the first part of this paper we set up a general frameworkn for algebraic patterns and their Segal obj…
Consider a diagram of quasi-categories that admit and functors that preserve limits or colimits of a fixed shape. We show that any weighted limit whose weight is a projective cofibrant simplicial functor is again a quasi-category admitting these (co)limits and that they are preserved by the functors in the limit cone. In particular, the Bousfield-Kan homotopy limit of a diagram of quasi-categories admit any limits or colimits existing in and preserved by the functors in that diagram. In previous work, we demonstrated that the quasi-category of algebras for a homotopy coherent monad could be de…
Consider a monad on an idempotent complete triangulated category with the property that its Eilenberg-Moore category of modules inherits a triangulation. We show that any other triangulated adjunction realizing this monad is 'essentially monadic', i.e. becomes monadic after performing the two evident necessary operations of taking the Verdier quotient by the kernel of the right adjoint and idempotent completion. In this sense, the monad itself is 'intrinsically monadic'. It follows that for any highly structured ring spectrum, its category of homotopy (a.k.a. naive) modules is triangulated if …
We develop a Gabriel-Morita theory for strong monads on pointed monoidal model categories. Assuming that the model category is excisive, i.e. the derived suspension functor is conservative, we show that if the monad T preserves cofibre sequences up to homotopy and has a weakly invertible strength, then the category of T-algebras is Quillen equivalent to the category of T(I)-modules where I is the monoidal unit. This recovers Schwede's theorem on connective stable homotopy over a pointed Lawvere theory as special case.
We show that several apparently unrelated formulas involving left or right Bousfield localizations in homotopy theory are induced by comparison maps associated with pairs of adjoint functors. Such comparison maps are used in the article to discuss the existence of functorial liftings of homotopical localizations and cellularizations to categories of algebras over monads acting on model categories, with emphasis on the cases of module spectra and algebras over simplicial operads. Some of our results hold for algebras up to homotopy as well; for example, if $T$ is the reduced monad associated wi…
We study Quillen model categories equipped with a monoidal skew closed structure that descends to a genuine monoidal closed structure on the homotopy category. Our examples are 2-categorical and include permutative categories and bicategories. Using the skew framework, we adapt Eilenberg and Kelly's theorem relating monoidal and closed structure to the homotopical setting. This is applied to the construction of monoidal bicategories arising from the pseudo-commutative 2-monads of Hyland and Power.
It is known that factorisation systems in categories can be viewed as unitary pseudo algebras for the "squaring" monad in Cat. We show in this note that an analogous fact holds for proper (i.e., epi-mono) factorisation systems and a suitable quotient of the former monad, deriving from a construct introduced by P. Freyd for stable homotopy. Structural similarities of the previous monad with the path endofunctor of topological spaces are considered.
We extend Homotopy Type Theory with a novel modality that is simultaneously a monad and a comonad. Because this modality induces a non-trivial endomap on every type, it requires a more intricate judgemental structure than previous modal extensions of Homotopy Type Theory. We use this theory to develop an synthetic approach to spectra, where spectra are represented by certain types, and constructions on them by type structure: maps of spectra by ordinary functions, loop spaces by the identity type, and so on. We augment the type theory with a pair of axioms, one which implies that the spectra a…
In this article, we interconnect two different aspects of higher category theory, in one hand the theory of infinity categories and on an other hand the theory of 2-categories.We construct an explicit functorial path objet in the model category of topological categories. We discuss some properties and consequences of such path object. We also explain the construction of a 2-monad which algebras are (symmetric) monoidal topological categories. Finally, we explain the relationship with the eventual model structure on the category of T-algebras.
We compute the Bousfield localizations and Bousfield colocalizations of discrete model categories, including the homotopy categories and the algebraic $K$-groups of these localizations and colocalizations. We prove necessary and sufficient conditions for a subcategory of a category to appear as the subcategory of fibrant objects for some such model structure. We also prove necessary and sufficient conditions for a monad to be the fibrant replacement monad of some such model structure.
Let $\mathscr{M}$ be a monoidal model category that is also combinatorial and left proper. If $\mathscr{O}$ is a monad, operad, properad, or a PROP; following Segal's ideas we develop a theory of Quillen-Segal $\mathscr{O}$-algebras and show that we have a Quillen equivalence between usual $\mathscr{O}$-algebras and Quillen-Segal algebras. We use this theory to get the stable homotopy category by a similar method as Hovey.
The hammock localization provides a model for a homotopy function complex in any Quillen model category. We prove that a homotopy between a pair of morphisms induces a homotopy between the maps induced by taking the hammock localization. We describe applications of this fact to the study of homotopy algebras over monads and homotopy idempotent functors. Among other things, we prove that, under Vopěnka's principle, every homotopy idempotent functor in a cofibrantly generated model category is determined by simplicial orthogonality with respect to a set of morphisms. We also give a new proof of …
Generalizing the approach to pseudo monoidal DG-categories as certain colored non-symmetric DG-operads, we introduce a certain relaxed notion of a category enriched in DG-categories. We construct model structures on the category of colored non-symmetric DG-operads and on the category of DGCat-enriched categories with a fixed set of objects. This allows us to talk about strong homotopy maps in both settings. We discuss the notion of a strong homotopy monad in a DG-category and a notion of strong homotopy adjunction data for two DG-functors.
We develop a homotopy theoretical version of classical Morita theory using the notion of a strong monad. It was Anders Kock who proved that a monad T in a monoidal category E is strong if and only if T is enriched in E. We prove that this correspondence between strength and enrichment follows from a 2-isomorphism of 2-categories. Under certain conditions on T, we prove that the category of T-algebras is Quillen equivalent to the category of modules over the endomorphism monoid of the T-algebra T(I) freely generated by the unit I of E. In the special case where E is the category of Gamma-spaces…
Inspired by recent work of Batanin and Berger on the homotopy theory of operads, a general monad-theoretic context for speaking about structures within structures is presented, and the problem of constructing the universal ambient structure containing the prescribed internal structure is studied. Following the work of Lack, these universal objects must be constructed from simplicial objects arising from our monad-theoretic framework, as certain 2-categorical colimits called codescent objects. We isolate the extra structure present on these simplicial objects which enable their codescent object…
An algebraic left Kan extension is a left Kan extension which interacts well with the algebraic structure present in the given situation, and these appear in various subjects such as the homotopy theory of operads and in the study of conformal field theories. In the most interesting examples, the functor along which we left Kan extend goes between categories that enjoy universal properties which express the meaning of the calculation we are trying to understand. These universal properties say that the categories in question are universal examples of some categorical structure possessing some k…
We investigate the categories of weak maps associated to an algebraic weak factorisation system (AWFS) in the sense of Grandis-Tholen. For any AWFS on a category with an initial object, cofibrant replacement forms a comonad, and the category of (left) weak maps associated to the AWFS is by definition the Kleisli category of this comonad. We exhibit categories of weak maps as a kind of "homotopy category", that freely adjoins a section for every "acyclic fibration" (=right map) of the AWFS; and using this characterisation, we give an alternate description of categories of weak maps in terms of …
We investigate the extent to which the weak equivalences in a model category can be equipped with algebraic structure. We prove, for instance, that there exists a monad T such that a morphism of topological spaces admits T-algebra structure if and only it is a weak homotopy equivalence. Likewise for quasi-isomorphisms and many other examples. The basic trick is to consider injectivity in arrow categories. Using algebraic injectivity and cone injectivity we obtain general results about the extent to which the weak equivalences in a combinatorial model category can be equipped with algebraic str…
We give a commutative valuations monad Z on the category DCPO of dcpo's and Scott-continuous functions. Compared to the commutative valuations monads given in [Jia et al., 2021], our new monad Z is larger and it contains all push-forward images of valuations on the unit interval [0,1] along lower semi-continuous maps. We believe that this new monad will be useful in giving domain-theoretic denotational semantics for statistical programming languages with continuous probabilistic choice.
We explain how any cofibrantly generated weak factorisation system on a category may be equipped with a universally and canonically determined choice of cofibrant replacement. We then apply this to the theory of weak omega-categories, showing that the universal and canonical cofibrant replacement of the operad for strict omega-categories is precisely Leinster's operad for weak omega-categories.
Building on a previous definition of homotopy limit of model categories, we give a definition of homotopy colimit of model categories. Using the complete Segal space model for homotopy theories, we verify that this definition corresponds to the model-category-theoretic definition in that setting.
This paper presents a novel connection between homotopical algebra and mathematical logic. It is shown that a form of intensional type theory is valid in any Quillen model category, generalizing the Hofmann-Streicher groupoid model of Martin-Loef type theory.
The concept of_refinement_ in type theory is a way of reconciling the "intrinsic" and the "extrinsic" meanings of types. We begin with a rigorous analysis of this concept, settling on the simple conclusion that the type-theoretic notion of "type refinement system" may be identified with the category-theoretic notion of "functor". We then use this correspondence to give an equivalent type-theoretic formulation of Grothendieck's definition of (bi)fibration, and extend this to a definition of_monoidal closed bifibrations_, which we see as a natural space in which to study the properties of proofs…
We investigate the foundations of a theory of algebraic data types with variable binding inside classical universal algebra. In the first part, a category-theoretic study of monads over the nominal sets of Gabbay and Pitts leads us to introduce new notions of finitary based monads and uniform monads. In a second part we spell out these notions in the language of universal algebra, show how to recover the logics of Gabbay-Mathijssen and Clouston-Pitts, and apply classical results from universal algebra.
There are many category-theoretic notions of algebraic theory, including Lawvere theories, monads, PROPs and operads. The first central notion of this thesis is a common generalisation of these, which we call a proto-theory. In order to define models of a proto-theory in a category, we need a way of relating the arities of the proto-theory with the objects of the category. This leads to our second central notion, that of an interpretation of arities, or aritation for short. We show that every aritation gives rise to a semantics functor sending proto-theories to models. In fact this functor alw…
In this paper we define Martin-Löf complexes to be algebras for monads on the category of (reflexive) globular sets which freely add cells in accordance with the rules of intensional Martin-Löf type theory. We then study the resulting categories of algebras for several theories. Our principal result is that there exists a cofibrantly generated Quillen model structure on the category of 1-truncated Martin-Löf complexes and that this category is Quillen equivalent to the category of groupoids. In particular, 1-truncated Martin-Löf complexes are a model of homotopy 1-types.
This is the second part of a work initiated in \cite{GaHa}, where we constructed a model category, $\Qt$, for set theory. In the present paper we use this model category to introduce homotopy-theoretic intuitions to set theory. Our main observation is that the homotopy invariant version of cardinality is the covering number of Shelah's PCF theory, and that other combinatorial objects, such as Shelah's revised power function - the cardinal function featuring in Shelah's revised GCH theorem - can be obtained using similar tools. We include a small "dictionary" for set theory in $\QtNaamen$, hopi…
We study the problem of existence and uniqueness of homotopy colimits in stable representation theory, where one typically does not have model category structures to guarantee that these homotopy colimits exist or have good properties. We get both negative results (homotopy cofibers fail to exist if there exist any objects of positive finite projective dimension!) and positive results (reasonable conditions under which homotopy colimits exist and are unique, even when model category structures fail to exist). Along the way, we obtain relative-homological-algebraic generalizations of classical …
We investigate inductive types in type theory, using the insights provided by homotopy type theory and univalent foundations of mathematics. We do so by introducing the new notion of a homotopy-initial algebra. This notion is defined by a purely type-theoretic contractibility condition which replaces the standard, category-theoretic universal property involving the existence and uniqueness of appropriate morphisms. Our main result characterises the types that are equivalent to W-types as homotopy-initial algebras.
We present a way of constructing a Quillen model structure on a full subcategory of an elementary topos, starting with an interval object with connections and a certain dominance. The advantage of this method is that it does not require the underlying topos to be cocomplete. The resulting model category structure gives rise to a model of homotopy type theory with identity types, $Σ$- and $Π$-types, and functional extensionality. We apply the method to the effective topos with the interval object $\nabla 2$. In the resulting model structure we identify uniform inhabited objects as contractible …
This is an introduction to type theory, synthetic topology, and homotopy type theory from a category-theoretic and topological point of view, written as a chapter for the book "New Spaces for Mathematics and Physics" (ed. Gabriel Catren and Mathieu Anel).
C*-algebras form rather general and rich mathematical structures that can be studied with different morphisms (preserving multiplication, or not), and with different properties (commutative, or not). These various options can be used to incorporate various styles of computation (set-theoretic, probabilistic, quantum) inside categories of C*-algebras. At first, this paper concentrates on the commutative case and shows that there are functors from several Kleisli categories, of monads that are relevant to model probabilistic computations, to categories of C*-algebras. This yields a new probabili…
We use a category-theoretic formulation of Aczel's Fullness Axiom from Constructive Set Theory to derive the local cartesian closure of an exact completion. As an application, we prove that such a formulation is valid in the homotopy category of any model category satisfying mild requirements, thus obtaining in particular the local cartesian closure of the exact completion of topological spaces and homotopy classes of maps. Under a type-theoretic reading, these results provide a general motivation for the local cartesian closure of the category of setoids. However, results and proofs are formu…
For a quantale $\V$, first a closure-theoretic approach to completeness and separation in $\V$-categories is presented. This approach is then generalized to $\Tth$-categories, where $\Tth$ is a topological theory that entails a set monad $\mT$ and a compatible $\mT$-algebra structure on $\V$.
Homotopy Type Theory is a new field of mathematics based on the surprising and elegant correspondence between Martin-Lofs constructive type theory and abstract homotopy theory. We have a powerful interplay between these disciplines - we can use geometric intuition to formulate new concepts in type theory and, conversely, use type-theoretic machinery to verify and often simplify existing mathematical proofs. A crucial ingredient in this new system are higher inductive types, which allow us to represent objects such as spheres, tori, pushouts, and quotients. We investigate a variant of higher in…
