It is known that factorisation systems in categories can be viewed as unitary pseudo algebras for the "squaring" monad in Cat.
We show in this note that an analogous fact holds for proper (i.e., epi-mono) factorisation systems and a suitable quotient of the former monad, deriving from a construct introduced by P. Freyd for stable homotopy.
Structural similarities of the previous monad with the path endofunctor of topological spaces are considered.
In 1966, John Isbell introduced a construction on categories which he termed the "couple category" but which has since come to be known as the Isbell envelope. The Isbell envelope, which combines the ideas of contravariant and covariant presheaves, has found applications in category theory, logic, and differential geometry. We clarify its meaning by exhibiting the assignation sending a locally small category to its Isbell envelope as the action on objects of a pseudomonad on the 2-category of locally small categories; this is the Isbell monad of the title. We characterise the pseudoalgebras of…
This paper introduces lax orthogonal algebraic weak factorisation systems on 2-categories and describes a method of constructing them. This method rests in the notion of simple 2-monad, that is a generalisation of the simple reflections studied by Cassidy, Hébert and Kelly. Each simple 2-monad on a finitely complete 2-category gives rise to a lax orthogonal algebraic weak factorisation system, and an example of a simple 2-monad is given by completion under a class of colimits. The notions of KZ lifting operation, lax natural lifting operation and lax orthogonality between morphisms are studied…
In this work we discuss a new type of factorisation systems for \textbf{Ord}-enriched categories. We start by defining the new notion of lax weak orthogonality, which involves the existence of lax diagonal morphisms for lax squares. Using the usual theory of factorisation systems as a blueprint, we introduce a lax version of weak and functorial factorisation systems. We provide a characterisation of lax functorial weak factorisation systems, namely lax weak factorisation systems such that their factorisations are lax functorial. Then, we present a particular case of such lax functorial weak fa…
We construct an iterative method for factorising small strict n-categories into a unique (up to isomorphism) collection of small 1- categories. Following this we develop the theory to include a large class of $\infty$-categories. We use this factorisation to define cohomology theory for higher categories. Finally, we discuss some concrete examples of factorisations of low dimensional categories.
We study the action of monads on categories equipped with several monoidal structures. We identify the structure and conditions that guarantee that the higher monoidal structure is inherited by the category of algebras over the monad. Monoidal monads and comonoidal monads appear as the base cases in this hierarchy. Monads acting on duoidal categories constitute the next case. We cover the general case of $n$-monoidal categories and discuss several naturally occurring examples in which $n\leq 3$.
In this paper we define Gabriel monads as the idempotent monads associated to exact reflective localizations in Abelian categories and characterize them by a simple set of properties. The coimage of a Gabriel monad is a Serre quotient category. The Gabriel monad induces an equivalence between its coimage and its image, the localizing subcategory of local objects.
We extend the basic concepts of Street's formal theory of monads from the setting of 2-categories to that of double categories. In particular, we introduce the double category Mnd(C) of monads in a double category C and define what it means for a double category to admit the construction of free monads. Our main theorem shows that, under some mild conditions, a double category that is a framed bicategory admits the construction of free monads if its horizontal 2-category does. We apply this result to obtain double adjunctions which extend the adjunction between graphs and categories and the ad…
We associate, in a functorial way, a monoidal bicategory $\mathsf{Span}| \mathcal V$ to any monoidal bicategory $\mathcal V$. Two examples of this construction are of particular interest: Hopf polyads (due to Bruguières) can be seen as Hopf monads in $\mathsf{Span}| \mathsf{Cat}$ while Hopf group monoids in a braided monoidal category $V$ (in the spirit of Turaev and Zunino), and Hopf categories over $V$ (by Batista, Caenepeel and Vercruysse) both turn out to be Hopf monads in $\mathsf{Span}| V$. Hopf group monoids and Hopf categories are Hopf monads on a distinguished type of monoidales fitti…
In this paper we unify previous developments on higher operads and multitensors into a single framework in which the interplay between multitensors on a category V, and monads on the category of graphs enriched in V, is taken as fundamental. The material presented here is the conceptual background for subsequent work in which the Gray tensor product of 2-categories and the Crans tensor product of Gray categories are exhibited as existing within our framework, and in an explicit construction of the funny tensor product of categories is generalised to a large class of Batanin operads.
We consider the equivalence of Lawvere theories and finitary monads on Set from the perspective of Endf(Set)-enriched category theory, where Endf(Set) is the category of finitary endofunctors of Set. We identify finitary monads with one-object Endf(Set)-categories, and ordinary categories admitting finite powers (i.e., n-fold products of each object with itself) with Endf(Set)-categories admitting a certain class Phi of absolute colimits; we then show that, from this perspective, the passage from a finitary monad to the associated Lawvere theory is given by completion under Phi-colimits. We al…
We show how to "interleave" the monad for operads and the monad for contractions on the category \coll of collections, to construct the monad for the operads-with-contraction of Leinster. We first decompose the adjunction for operads and the adjunction for contractions into a chain of adjunctions each of which acts on only one dimension of the underlying globular sets at a time. We then exhibit mutual stability conditions that enable us to alternate the dimension-by-dimension free functors. Hence we give an explicit construction of a left adjoint for the forgetful functor $\owc \lra \coll$, fr…
We characterize double adjunctions in terms of presheaves and universal squares, and then apply these characterizations to free monads and Eilenberg--Moore objects in double categories. We improve upon our earlier result in "Monads in Double Categories", JPAA 215:6, pages 1174-1197, 2011, to conclude: if a double category with cofolding admits the construction of free monads in its horizontal 2-category, then it also admits the construction of free monads as a double category. We also prove that a double category admits Eilenberg--Moore objects if and only if a certain parameterized presheaf i…
We introduce a framework for universal algebra in categories of relational structures given by finitary relational signatures and finitary or infinitary Horn theories, with the arity $λ$ of a Horn theory understood as a strict upper bound on the number of premisses in its axioms; key examples include partial orders ($λ=ω$) or metric spaces ($λ=ω_1$). We establish a bijective correspondence between $λ$-accessible enriched monads on the given category of relational structures and a notion of $λ$-ary algebraic theories (i.e. with operations of arity $<λ$), with the syntax of algebraic theories in…
This paper focus on the presheaf monad and its submonads on the realm of $V$-categories, for a quantale $V$. First we present two characterisations of presheaf submonads, both using $V$-distributors: one based on admissible classes of $V$-distributors, and other using Beck-Chevalley conditions on $V$-distributors. Then we focus on the study of the corresponding Eilenberg-Moore categories of algebras, having as main examples the formal ball monad and the so-called Lawvere monad.
We give an abstract categorical treatment of Plonka sums and products using lax and oplax morphisms of monads. Plonka sums were originally defined as operations on algebras of regular theories. Their arities are sup-semilattices. It turns out that even more general operations are available on the categories of algebras of semi-analytic monads. Their arities are the categories of the regular polynomials over any sup-semilattice, i.e. any algebra for the terminal semi-analytic monad. We also show that similar operations can be defined on any category of algebras of any analytic monad. This time …
For a generalisation of the classical theory of Hopf algebra over fields, A. Bruguières and A. Virelizier study opmonoidal monads on monoidal categories (which they called {\em bimonads}). In a recent joint paper with S. Lack the same authors define the notion of a {\em pre-Hopf monad} by requiring only a special form of the fusion operator to be invertible. In previous papers it was observed by the present authors that bimonads yield a special case %Hopf monads may be considered as a special case of an entwining of a pair of functors (on arbitrary categories). The purpose of this note is to s…
We define the category of tidy symmetric multicategories. We construct for each tidy symmetric multicategory Q a cartesian monad (E_Q,T_Q) and extend this assignation to a functor. We exhibit a relationship between the slice construction on symmetric multicategories, and the `free operad' monad construction on suitable monads. We use this to give an explicit description of the relationship between Baez-Dolan and Leinster opetopes.
For a number of locally finitely presentable categories K we describe the codensity monad of the full embedding of all finitely presentable objects into K. We introduce the concept of D-ultrafilter on an object, where D is a "nice" cogenerator of K. We prove that the codensity monad assigns to every object an object representing all D-ultrafilters on it. Our result covers e.g. categories of sets, vector spaces, posets, semilattices, graphs and M-sets for finite commutative monoids M.
We characterize the equational theories and Lawvere theories that correspond to the categories of analytic and polynomial monads on Set, and hence also the categories of the symmetric and rigid operads in Set. We show that the category of analytic monads is equivalent to the category of regular-linear theories. The category of polynomial monads is equivalent to the category of rigid theories, i.e. regular-linear theories satisfying an additional global condition. This solves a problem A. Carboni and P. T. Johnstone. The Lawvere theories corresponding to these monads are identified via some fac…
This chapter describes interrelations between: (1) algebraic structure on sets of scalars, (2) properties of monads associated with such sets of scalars, and (3) structure in categories (esp. Lawvere theories) associated with these monads. These interrelations will be expressed in terms of "triangles of adjunctions", involving for instance various kinds of monoids (non-commutative, commutative, involutive) and semirings as scalars. It will be shown to which kind of monads and categories these algebraic structures correspond via adjunctions.
A general result relating skew monoidal structures and monads is proved. This is applied to quantum categories and bialgebroids. Ordinary categories are monads in the bicategory whose morphisms are spans between sets. Quantum categories were originally defined as monoidal comonads on endomorphism objects in a particular monoidal bicategory M. Then they were shown also to be skew monoidal structures (with an appropriate unit) on objects in M. Now we see in what kind of M quantum categories are merely monads.
We use the basic expected properties of the Gray tensor product of $(\infty,2)$-categories to study (co)lax natural transformations. Using results of Riehl-Verity and Zaganidis we identify lax transformations between adjunctions and monads with commutative squares of (monadic) right adjoints. We also identify the colax transformations whose components are equivalences (generalizing the "icons" of Lack) with the 2-morphisms that arise from viewing $(\infty,2)$-categories as simplicial $\infty$-categories. Using this characterization we identify the $\infty$-category of monads on a fixed object …
State monads in cartesian closed categories are those defined by the familiar adjunction between product and exponential. We investigate the structure of their algebras, and show that the exponential functor is monadic provided the base category is sufficiently regular, and the exponent is a non-empty object.
We investigate the categories of weak maps associated to an algebraic weak factorisation system (AWFS) in the sense of Grandis-Tholen. For any AWFS on a category with an initial object, cofibrant replacement forms a comonad, and the category of (left) weak maps associated to the AWFS is by definition the Kleisli category of this comonad. We exhibit categories of weak maps as a kind of "homotopy category", that freely adjoins a section for every "acyclic fibration" (=right map) of the AWFS; and using this characterisation, we give an alternate description of categories of weak maps in terms of …
We establish a correspondence between consistent comprehension schemes and complete orthogonal factorisation systems. The comprehensive factorisation of a functor between small categories arises in this way. Similar factorisation systems exist for the categories of topological spaces, simplicial sets, small multicategories and Feynman categories. In each case comprehensive factorisation induces a natural notion of universal covering, leading to a Galois-type definition of fundamental group for based objects of the category.
We define Frobenius-Eilenberg-Moore objects for a dagger Frobenius monad in an arbitrary dagger 2-category, and extend to the dagger context a well-known universal property of the formal theory of monads. We show that the free completion of a 2-category under Eilenberg-Moore objects extends to the dagger context, provided one is willing to work with such dagger Frobenius monads whose endofunctor part suitably commutes with their unit. Finally, we define dagger lax functors and dagger lax-limits of such functors, and show that Frobenius-Eilenberg-Moore objects are examples of such limits.
Recently, Dotsenko and Tamaroff have shown that a morphism of $T\longrightarrow S$ of monads over a category $\mathscr C$ satisfies the PBW-property if and only if it makes $S$ into a free right $T$-module. We consider an adjunction $Ψ=(G,F)$ between categories $\mathscr C$, $\mathscr D$, a monad $S$ on $\mathscr C$ and a monad $T$ on $\mathscr D$. We show that a morphism $ϕ:(\mathscr C,S)\longrightarrow (\mathscr D,T)$ that is well behaved with respect to the adjunction $Ψ$ has a PBW-property if and only if it makes $S$ satisfy a certain freeness condition with respect to $T$-modules with val…
We explain the sense in which a warping on a monoidal category is the same as a pseudomonad on the corresponding one-object bicategory, and we describe extensions of this to the setting of skew monoidal categories: these are a generalization of monoidal categories in which the associativity and unit maps are not required to be invertible. Our analysis leads us to describe a normalization process for skew monoidal categories, which produces a universal skew monoidal category for which the right unit map is invertible.
Consider a monad on an idempotent complete triangulated category with the property that its Eilenberg-Moore category of modules inherits a triangulation. We show that any other triangulated adjunction realizing this monad is 'essentially monadic', i.e. becomes monadic after performing the two evident necessary operations of taking the Verdier quotient by the kernel of the right adjoint and idempotent completion. In this sense, the monad itself is 'intrinsically monadic'. It follows that for any highly structured ring spectrum, its category of homotopy (a.k.a. naive) modules is triangulated if …
We introduce and study Hopf monads on autonomous categories (i.e., monoidal categories with duals). Hopf monads generalize Hopf algebras to a non-braided (and non-linear) setting. Indeed, any monoidal adjunction between autonomous categories gives rise to a Hopf monad. We extend many fundamental results of the theory of Hopf algebras (such as the decomposition of Hopf modules, the existence of integrals, Maschke's criterium of semisimplicity, etc...) to Hopf monads. We also introduce and study quasitriangular and ribbon Hopf monads (again defined in a non-braided setting).
Orbits of automorphism groups of partially ordered sets are not necessarily congruence classes, i.e. images of an order homomorphism. Based on so-called orbit categories a framework of factorisations and unfoldings is developed that preserves the antisymmetry of the order Relation. Finally some suggestions are given, how the orbit categories can be represented by simple directed and annotated graphs and annotated binary relations. These relations are reflexive, and, in many cases, they can be chosen to be antisymmetric. From these constructions arise different suggestions for fundamental syste…
Given a torsion theory (Y,X) in an abelian category C, the reflector I from C to the torsion-free subcategory X induces a reflective factorisation system (E, M) on C. It was shown by A. Carboni, G.M. Kelly, G. Janelidze and R. Paré that (E, M) induces a monotone-light factorisation system (E',M*) by simultaneously stabilising E and localising M, whenever the torsion theory is hereditary and any object in C is a quotient of an object in X. We extend this result to arbitrary normal categories, and improve it also in the abelian case, where the heredity assumption on the torsion theory turns out …
We outline the theory of reflections for prederivators, derivators and stable derivators. In order to parallel the classical theory valid for categories, we outline how reflections can be equivalently described as categories of fractions, reflective factorization systems, and categories of algebras for idempotent monads. This is a further development of the theory of monads and factorization systems for derivators.
We define Hopf monads on an arbitrary monoidal category, extending the definition given previously for monoidal categories with duals. A Hopf monad is a bimonad (or opmonoidal monad) whose fusion operators are invertible. This definition can be formulated in terms of Hopf adjunctions, which are comonoidal adjunctions with an invertibility condition. On a monoidal category with internal Homs, a Hopf monad is a bimonad admitting a left and a right antipode. Hopf monads generalize Hopf algebras to the non-braided setting. They also generalize Hopf algebroids (which are linear Hopf monads on a cat…
For a quantaloid $\mathcal{Q}$, considered as a bicategory, Walters introduced categories enriched in $\mathcal{Q}$. Here we extend the study of monad-quantale-enriched categories of the past fifteen years by introducing monad-quantaloid-enriched categories. We do so by making lax distributive laws of a monad $\mathbb{T}$ over the discrete presheaf monad of the small quantaloid $\mathcal{Q}$ the primary data of the theory, rather than the lax monad extensions of $\mathbb{T}$ to the category of $\mathcal{Q}$-relations that they equivalently describe. The central piece of the paper establishes a…

For finitary regular monads T on locally finitely presentable categories we characterize the finitely presentable objects in the category of T-algebras in the style known from general algebra: they are precisely the algebras presentable by finitely many generators and finitely many relations.
The theory of commutative monads on cartesian closed categories provides a framework where aspects of the theory of distributions and other extensive quantities can be formulated and some results proved. We make explicit a link between our theory and the theory of Schwartz distributions of compact support. We also discuss probability distributions.
An object $P$ in a monoidal category $\mathcal{C}$ is called pivotal if its left dual and right dual objects are isomorphic. Given such an object and a choice of dual $Q$, we construct the category $\mathcal{C}(P,Q)$, of objects which intertwine with $P$ and $Q$ in a compatible manner. We show that this category lifts the monoidal structure of $\mathcal{C}$ and the closed structure of $\mathcal{C}$, when $\mathcal{C}$ is closed. If $\mathcal{C}$ has suitable colimits we show that $\mathcal{C}(P,Q)$ is monadic and thereby construct a family of Hopf monads on arbitrary closed monoidal categories…
