In this work we report two designs of subwavelength fibers packaged for practical terahertz wave guiding. We describe fabrication, modeling and characterization of microstructured polymer fibers featuring a subwavelength-size core suspended in the middle of a large porous outer cladding. This design allows convenient handling of the subwavelength fibers without distorting their modal profile. Additionally, the air-tight porous cladding serves as a natural enclosure for the fiber core, thus avoiding the need for a bulky external enclosure for humidity-purged atmosphere. Fibers of 5 mm and 3 mm in outer diameters with a 150 μm suspended solid core and a 900 μm suspended porous core respectively, were obtained by utilizing a combination of drilling and stacking techniques. Characterization of the fiber optical properties and the near-field imaging of the guided modes were performed using a terahertz near-field microscopy setup. Near-field imaging of the modal profiles at the fiber output confirmed the effectively single-mode behavior of such waveguides. The suspended core fibers exhibit broadband transmission from 0.10 THz to 0.27 THz (larger core), and from 0.25 THz to 0.51 THz (smaller core). Due to the large fraction of power that is guided in the holey cladding, fiber propagation losses as low as 0.02 cm-1 are demonstrated. Low-loss guidance combined with the core isolated from environmental perturbations make these all-dielectric fibers suitable for practical terahertz imaging and sensing applications.
We demonstrate first- and second-order spatial differentiation of an optical beam transverse profile using thin suspended subwavelength gratings. Highly reflective one-dimensional gratings are patterned on suspended 200 nm-thick silicon nitride membranes using Electron Beam Lithography and plasma etching. The optical transmission of these gratings, designed for illumination with either TM or TE polarized light, are experimentally measured under normal and oblique incidence and found to be in excellent agreement with the predictions of an analytical coupled-mode model as well as Rigorous Couple…
Transmission of a normally incident plane wave through a metasurface with bicontrollable subwavelength scattering elements was simulated using a commercial software. Some pixels comprising the $H-shaped scattering elements were made of a magnetostatically controllable material whereas the remaining pixels were made of a thermally controllable material, the metasurface designed to operate in the terahertz spectral regime. The co-polarized transmission coefficients were found to exhibit stopbands that shift when either a magnetostatic field is applied or the temperature is increased or both. Dep…
We present a metamaterial-based terahertz (THz) sensor for thickness measurements of subwavelength-thin materials and refractometry of liquids and liquid mixtures. The sensor operates in reflection geometry and exploits the frequency shift of a sharp Fano resonance minimum in the presence of dielectric materials. We obtained a minimum thickness resolution of 12.5 nm (1/16000 times the wavelength of the THz radiation) and a refractive index sensitivity of 0.43 THz per refractive index unit. We support the experimental results by an analytical model that describes the dependence of the resonance…
Transmission through a subwavelength terahertz fiber, which is positioned in parallel to a frequency selective surface, is studied using several finite element tools. Both the band diagram technique and the port-based scattering matrix technique are used to explain the nature of various resonances in the fiber transmission spectrum. First, we observe that spectral positions of most of the transmission peaks in the port-based simulation can be related to the positions of Van Hove singularities in the band diagram of a corresponding infinite periodic system. Moreover, spectral shape of most of t…
We designed a cut-wire-pair metasurface that works as a transparent terahertz half-wave plate, by matching the electric and magnetic resonances of the structure. Due to the impedance matching nature of the resonances, a large transmission phase shift between the orthogonal polarizations was achieved, while permitting a high transmission. The electric and magnetic responses of the proposed structure were confirmed by evaluating the electric admittance and magnetic impedance. The structure was fabricated on a flexible film and its helicity-conversion function in the terahertz frequency range was…
Terahertz spectral range (frequencies of 0.1-1 THz) has recently emerged as the next frontier for non-destructive imaging, industrial sensing and ultra-fast wireless communications. Here, we review several classes of materials such as simple metals, semiconductors, high-k dielectrics, polar materials, zero gap materials, as well as structured materials that can support strongly localised electromagnetic modes at material interfaces in the Terahertz spectral range. We present the basic theory of surface waves, detail the requirement of strong modal confinement and low loss for the surface waves…
We investigate the optical properties of microcavities with suspended subwavelength structured mirrors, such as high-contrast gratings or two-dimensional photonic crystals slabs, and focus in particular on the regime in which the microcavity free-spectral range is larger than the width of a Fano resonance of the highly reflecting structured mirror. In this unusual regime, the transmission spectrum of the microcavity essentially consists in a single mode, whose linewidth can be significantly narrower than both the Fano resonance linewidth and the linewidth of an equally short cavity without str…
Silicon carbide (SiC) displays a unique combination of optical and spin-related properties that make it interesting for photonics and quantum technologies. However, guiding light by total internal reflection can be difficult to achieve, especially when SiC is grown as thin films on higher index substrates, like Silicon. Fabricating suspended, subwavelength waveguides requires a single lithography step and offers a solution to the confinement problem, while preserving the design flexibility required for a scalable and complete photonic platform. Here we present a design for such platform, that …
We report extensive enhancement in the refractive index of artificially designed metamaterials by exploiting the deep subwavelength coupling in a free-standing, thin-film metal-dielectric-metal checkboard structure. A record high refractive index of 77.02+43.22i is obtained at terahertz frequencies. The detailed investigations reveal that the enhancement of the effective refractive index of the structure via deep subwavelength coupling in a bilayer design is governed by a power law, which is an effective and simpler approach to design high index metamaterial. The approach relies on deep subwav…
We describe the electronic control of extraordinary terahertz transmission through subwavelength metal hole arrays fabricated on doped semiconductor substrates. The hybrid metal-semiconductor forms a Schottky diode structure, where the active depletion region modifies the substrate conductivity in real-time by applying an external voltage bias. This enables effective control of the resonance enhanced terahertz transmission. Our proof of principle device achieves an intensity modulation depth of 52% by changing the voltage bias between 0 and 16 volts. Further optimization may result in improvem…
A new approach for the spatial and temporal modulation of electromagnetic fields at terahertz frequencies is presented. The waveguiding elements are based on plasmonic and metamaterial notions and consist of an easy-to-manufacture periodic chain of metallic box-shaped elements protruding out of a metallic surface. It is shown that the dispersion relation of the corresponding electromagnetic modes is rather insensitive to the waveguide width, preserving tight confinement and reasonable absorption loss even when the waveguide transverse dimensions are well in the subwavelength regime. This prope…
The recent development of the terahertz waveguide makes it an excellent platform for integrating many intriguing functionalities, which offers tremendous potential to build compact and robust terahertz systems. In the context of next-generation high-speed communication links at the terahertz band, engineering the dispersion and birefringence of terahertz waves is essential. Here, we experimentally demonstrate subwavelength birefringent waveguide gratings based on the low-loss cyclic olefin copolymer exploiting micro-machining fabrication techniques. Asymmetric cross-section and periodic-struct…
Inspired by the capability of structured illumination microscopy in subwavelength imaging, many researchers devoted themselves to investigating this methodology. However, due to the free propagating feature of the traditional structured illumination fields, the resolution can be only improved up to double times compared with the diffractied limited microscopy. Besides, most of the previous studies, relying on incoherent illumination sources, are restricted to fluorescent samples. In this work, a subwavelength nonfluorescent imaging method is proposed based on the terahertz traveling wave and p…
Plasmonic bowtie antennas made of doped silicon can operate as plasmonic resonators at terahertz (THz) frequencies and provide large field enhancement close to their gap. We demonstrate both experimentally and theoretically that the field confinement close to the surface of the antenna enables the detection of ultrathin (100 nm) inorganic films, about 3750 times thinner than the free space wavelength. Based on model calculations, we conclude that the detection sensitivity and its variation with the thickness of the deposited layer are related to both the decay of the local THz field profile ar…
In this work, we present an in-depth experimental and numerical study of the short-range THz communications links that use subwavelength dielectric fibers for information transmission and define main challenges and tradeoffs in the link implementation. Particularly, we use air or foam-cladded polypropylene-core subwavelength dielectric THz fibers of various diameters (0.57-1.75 mm) to study link performance as a function of the link length of up to ~10 m, and data bitrates of up to 6 Gbps at the carrier frequency of 128 GHz (2.34 mm wavelength). We find that depending on the fiber diameter, th…
In this Letter, we theoretically propose for the first time that graphene monolayers can be used for superscatterer designs. We show that the scattering cross section of the bare deep-subwavelength dielectric cylinder is markedly enhanced by six orders of magnitude due to the excitation of the first-order resonance of graphene plamons. By utilizing the tunability of the plasmonic resonance through tuning graphene's chemical potential, the graphene superscatterer works in a wide range of frequencies from several terahertz to tens of terahertz.
Near-field imaging with terahertz (THz) waves is emerging as a powerful technique for fundamental research in photonics and across physical and life sciences. Spatial resolution beyond the diffraction limit can be achieved by collecting THz waves from an object through a small aperture placed in the near-field. However, light transmission through a sub-wavelength size aperture is fundamentally limited by the wave nature of light. Here, we conceive a novel architecture that exploits inherently strong evanescent THz field arising within the aperture to mitigate the problem of vanishing transmiss…
Terahertz subwavelength imaging aims at developing THz microscopes able to resolve deeply subwavelength features. To improve the spatial resolution beyond the diffraction limit, a current trend is to use various subwavelength probes to convert the near-field to the far-field. These techniques, while offering significant gains in spatial resolution, inherently lack the ability to rapidly obtain THz images due to the necessity of slow pixel-by-pixel raster scan and often suffer from low light throughput. In parallel, in the visible spectral range, several super-resolution imaging techniques were…
We propose for the first time an E. coli bacteria sensor based on the evanescent field of the fundamental mode of a suspended-core terahertz fiber. The sensor is capable of E. coli detection at concentrations in the range of 104-109 cfu/ml. The polyethylene fiber features a 150 μm core suspended by three deeply sub-wavelength bridges in the center of a 5.1 mm-diameter cladding tube. The fiber core is biofunctionalized with T4 bacteriophages which bind and eventually destroy (lyse) their bacterial target. Using environmental SEM we demonstrate that E. coli is first captured by the phages on the…
Random orientation of liquid-suspended magnetic nanoparticles (Ferrofluid) gives rise to zero net magnetic orientation. An external magnetic field tends to align them into clusters, leading to a strong linear dichroism on a propagating wave. Using 10 nm-sized Fe3O4, we experimentally realize a polarization-sensitive magnetic modulator operating at terahertz wavelengths. We reached a modulation depth of 66% using a field of 35 mT. The proposed concept offers a solution towards fundamental terahertz magnetic modulators.
In the field of cavity nano-optomechanics, the nanoresonator-in-the-middle approach consists in inserting a sub-wavelength sized deformable resonator, here a nanowire, in the small mode volume of a fiber microcavity. Internal resonances in the nanowire enhance the light nanowire interaction which provide giant coupling strengthes -- sufficient to enter the single photon regime of cavity optomechanics -- at the condition to precisely position the nanowire within the cavity field. Here we expose a theoretical description that combines an analytical formulation of the Mie-scattering of the intrac…
In this paper we report suspended silicon waveguides operating at a wavelength of 7.67 mm with a propagation loss of 3.1 ? 0.3 dB/cm. To our knowledge this is the first demonstration of low loss silicon waveguides at such a long wavelength, with loss comparable to other platforms that use more exotic materials. The suspended Si waveguide core is supported by a subwavelength grating that provides lateral optical confinement, while also allowing access to the buried oxide layer so that it can be wet etched using hydrofluoric acid. We also demonstrate low loss waveguide bends and s-bends.
We observe a strong polarization dependent optical loss of in-plane light propagation in silicon waveguide due to the presence of graphene. Both transverse-electric (TE) and transverse-magnetic (TM) modes are efficiently (~3 dB) coupled to the graphene on suspended membrane waveguides using an apodized focusing subwavelength grating. The TE mode has 7.7 dB less excess optical loss than the TM mode at 1.5 μm for a 150 μm long waveguide in good agreement with a theoretical model. All-optical modulation of light is demonstrated. There is also a large thermally induced change in waveguide effectiv…
Electromagnetic resonators, which are based on optical cavities or electronic circuits, are key elements to enhance and control light-matter interaction. In the THz range, current optical cavities exhibit very high-quality factors with $(λ/2)^3$ mode volumes limited by diffraction, whereas resonant electronic circuits show low quality factor but provide strong subwavelength effective volume ($10^{-6} λ^3$). To overcome the limitations of each type of resonator, great efforts are being devoted to improving the performances of current methods or to the emergence of original approaches. Here, we …
The canalization of terahertz surface plasmon polaritons using a modulated graphene monolayer is investigated for subwavelength imaging. An anisotropic surface conductivity formed by a set of parallel nanoribbons with alternating positive and negative imaginary conductivities is used to realize the canalization regime required for hyperlensing. The ribbons are narrow compared to the wavelength, and are created electronically by gating a graphene layer over a corrugated ground plane. Good quality canalization of surface plasmon polaritons is shown in the terahertz even in the presence of realis…
Subwavelength-slotted parallel plate waveguides exhibit a localized electromagnetic resonance bound to the slits at a frequency slightly below the transverse electric cutoff [R. Merlin, Phys. Rev. X 2, 031015 (2012)]. The resonance is long-lived and, as opposed to the vanishingly small transmission shown by a single sub-wavelength aperture, it gives perfect transmission for perfectly-conducting plates. We show that the aperture-supported resonances of a pair of slotted copper plates have long lifetimes at THz frequencies. Finite element method calculations show that these bound resonances can …
The design of a self-complementary metallic checkerboard pattern achieves broadband, dispersion-less, and maximized absorption, concentrating in the deep subwavelength resistive connections between squares, without any theoretical limitation on the energy absorbing area. Here, we experimentally and numerically investigate the electromagnetic response in the limit of extremely small connections. We show that finite conductivity and randomness in a near-self-complementary checkerboard pattern plays a crucial role in producing a frequency-independent energy loss in the terahertz frequency region.…
Single-layer graphene exhibits exceptional mechanical properties attractive for optomechanics: it combines low mass density, large tensile modulus, and low bending stiffness. However, at visible wavelengths, graphene absorbs weakly and reflects even less, thereby inadequate to generate large optical forces needed in optomechanics. Here, we numerically show that a single-layer graphene sheet is sufficient to produce strong optical forces under terahertz or infrared illumination. For a system as simple as graphene suspended atop a uniform substrate, high reflectivity from the substrate is crucia…
The effectiveness of self-mixing interferometry has been demonstrated across the electromagnetic spectrum, from visible to microwave frequencies, in a plethora of sensing applications, ranging from distance measurement to material analysis, microscopy and coherent imaging. Owing to their intrinsic stability to optical feedback, quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) represent a source that offers unique and versatile characteristics to further improve the self-mixing functionality at mid infrared and terahertz (THz) frequencies. Here, we show the feasibility of detecting with nanometer precision deeply…
Fingerprint spectral response of several materials with terahertz electromagnetic radiation indicates that terahertz technology is an effective tool for sensing applications. However, sensing few nanometer thin-film of dielectrics with much longer terahertz waves (1 THz = 0.3 mm) is challenging. Here, we demonstrate a quasi-bound state in the continuum (BIC) resonance for sensing of nanometer scale thin analyte deposited on a flexible metasurface. The large sensitivity originates from strong local field confinement of the quasi-BIC Fano resonance state and extremely low absorption loss of a lo…
We propose using THz frequency selective surfaces interrogated with THz subwavelength optical fibers as sensors for monitoring of the optical properties of thick films that are brought in contact with such surfaces. Changes in the test film thickness and absorption losses can be measured simultaneously by interpreting variations in the spectral resonant features in the fiber transmission and reflection spectra. Particularly, changes in the film thickness induce strong shifts in the fiber transmission peaks, while changes in the film absorption induce notable amplitude variations in the fiber r…
Terahertz (THz) imaging has the ability to see through otherwise opaque materials. However, due to the long wavelengths of THz radiation (λ=300μm at 1THz), far-field THz imaging techniques are heavily outperformed by optical imaging in regards to the obtained resolution. In this work we demonstrate near-field THz imaging with a single-pixel detector. We project a time-varying optical mask onto a silicon wafer which is used to spatially modulate a pulse of THz radiation. The far-field transmission corresponding to each mask is recorded by a single element detector and this data is used to recon…
We demonstrate a high temperature performance quantum detector of Terahertz (THz) radiation based on three-dimensional metamaterial. The metamaterial unit cell consists of an inductor-capacitor (LC) resonator laterally coupled with antenna elements. The absorbing region, consisting of semiconductor quantum wells is contained in the strongly ultra-subwavelength capacitors of the LC structure. The high radiation loss of the antenna allows strongly increased collection efficiency for the incident THz radiation, while the small effective volume of the LC resonator allows intense light-matter coupl…
Terahertz (THz) waves have been significantly developed in the last fifteen years because of their great potential for applications in industrial and scientific communities1,2. The unique properties of THz waves as transparency for numerous materials and strong absorption for water-based materials are expected to broadly impact biosensing3 such as medical imaging4, chemical identifications5, and DNA recognition6. In particular, for accessing information within a scale comparable to the cell size where interactions between cell membrane and other organelle structures occur, micron size spatial …
We study a polarizer-analyzer mounting for the terahertz regime with perfectly conducting metallic polarizers made of a periodic subwavelength pattern. We analytically investigate the influence on the transmission response of the multiple reflections which occur between polarizer and analyzer with a renewed Jones formalism. We demonstrate that this interaction leads to a modified transmission response: the extended Malus' Law. In addition, we show that the transmission response can be controlled by the distance between polarizer and analyzer. For particular set-ups, the mounting exhibits extre…
High input intensities are usually required to efficiently excite optical nonlinear effects in ultrathin structures. This problem is particularly critical at terahertz (THz) frequencies because high input power THz sources are not available. The demonstration of enhanced nonlinear effects at THz frequencies is particularly important since these nonlinear mechanisms promise to play a significant role in the development and design of new reconfigurable planar THz nonlinear devices. In this work, we present a novel class of ultrathin nonlinear hybrid planar THz devices based on graphene-covered p…
Terahertz chiral sensing and polarization-multiplexing communication demand subwavelength devices that dynamically invert polarization helicity. Metasurfaces can enhance anisotropy and fine tunability at subwavelength scales for this purpose. Although metasurfaces enabling deep modulation between orthogonal polarizations have been designed, they suffer from low conversion efficiencies. In this study, it is shown that the efficiency of conversion from linear to circular polarization by conventional single-layer transmissive metasurfaces cannot exceed a fundamental limit. A dynamic reflective me…
We report on the design and experimental characterization of a suspended silicon nitride subwavelength grating possessing a polarization-independent guided-mode resonance at oblique incidence. At this resonant wavelength we observe that the transverse intensity profile of the transmitted beam is consistent with a first-order spatial differentiation of the incident beam profile in the direction of the grating periodicity, regardless of the incident light polarization. These observations are corroborated by full numerical simulations. The simple one-dimensional and symmetric design, combined wit…
Modern scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) has become an indispensable tool in material research. However, as the s-SNOM technique marches into the far-infrared (IR) and terahertz (THz) regimes, emerging experiments sometimes produce puzzling results. For example, anomalies in the near-field optical contrast have been widely reported. In this Letter, we systematically investigate a series of extreme subwavelength metallic nanostructures via s-SNOM near-field imaging in the GHz to THz frequency range. We find that the near-field material contrast is greatly impacted …

In this work, a novel infinity 3D printing technique is explored to fabricate continuous multi-meter-long low-loss near-zero dispersion suspended-core polypropylene fibers for application in terahertz (THz) communications. Particular attention is paid to process parameter optimization for 3D printing with low-loss polypropylene plastic. Three microstructured THz fibers were 3D printed using the standard and infinity 3D printers, and an in-depth theoretical and experimental comparison between the fibers were carried out. Transmission losses (by power) of 4.79 dB/m, 17.34 dB/m and 11.13 dB/m are…
