The so-called decoupling and scaling solutions of functional equations of Landau gauge Yang-Mills theory are briefly reviewed. In both types of solutions the positivity violation seen in the gluon propagator is taken as an indication of gluon confinement. In the scaling solution the resulting infrared singularities of the quark-gluon vertex are responsible for the linear potential between static quarks and are therefore signaling quark confinement. A corresponding description of the UA(1) anomaly in functional approaches is only known for the scaling solution. Nevertheless, it seems puzzling at first sight that quark confinement is related to the dynamical and anomalous breaking of chiral symmetry in a self-consistent manner: One obtains either all these phenomena or none. For the scaling solution also fundamental scalar fields are confined. This provides evidence that within functional approaches static confinement is an universal property of the gauge sector even though it is formally represented in the functional equations of the matter sector.
We study relation between Chiral Separation Effect (CSE) and Chiral Anomaly, and argue that CSE does not inherit the immutability of Chiral Anomaly. For QED in the leading order in electric charge, with point-splitting regularization in real-time formalism, we demontrate, in regularization-dependent way though, that CSE is an infrared (IR) effect, while the Anomaly is an ultra-violet (UV) phenomena. Thus, CSE in general is sensitive to non-perturbative interactions that alter the theory IR properties, while the Anomaly is fixed by Lorentz symmetry. The simplest example of such an interaction i…
A self-consistent holographic QCD model is proposed which can realize both chiral symmetry breaking and confinement, two most important phenomena of QCD. It is pointed out that the model can accommodate both Regge spectra of hadrons and the linear potential between quarks. The model is formulated in the framework of graviton-dilaton-scalar system, where the dilaton field is dual to the dimension-2 gluon condensate and can lead to the linear confinement, while the scalar field corresponds to the quark anti-quark condensate and can explain the property of chiral dynamics.
The chiral anomaly in the context of an extended standard model with minimal Lorentz invariance violation is studied. Taking into account bounds from measurements of the speed of light, we argue that the chiral anomaly and its consequences are general results valid even beyond the relativistic symmetry.
We demonstrate that $SO(N_{c})$ gauge theories with matter fields in the vector representation confine due to monopole condensation and break the $SU(N_{F})$ chiral symmetry to $SO(N_{F})$ via the quark bilinear. Our results are obtained by perturbing the ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric theory with anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking.
We study the Schwinger model at finite temperature and show that a temperature dependent chiral anomaly may arise from the long distance behavior of the electric field. At high temperature this anomaly depends linearly on the temperature $T$ and is present not only in the two point function, but also in all even point amplitudes.
It is known that in the zeta function regularization and in the Fujikawa method chiral anomaly is defined through a coefficient in the heat kernel expansion for the Dirac operator. In this paper we apply the heat kernel methods to calculate boundary contributions to the chiral anomaly for local (bag) boundary conditions. As a by-product some new results on the heat trace asymptotics are also obtained.
Through more detailed calculations on QED$_{1+1}$ and QED$_{3+1}$ emplying a new treatment of Feynman Amplitudes, we attribute the regularization independent and hence definite origin of chiral anomaly in perturbation theory to an unambiguous term which is a rational function in momentum space. Some relevant remarks are presented.

We analytically study the relation between quark confinement and spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking in QCD. In terms of the Dirac eigenmodes, we derive some formulae for the Polyakov loop, its fluctuations, and the string tension from the Wilson loop. We also investigate the Polyakov loop in terms of the eigenmodes of the Wilson, the clover and the domain wall fermion kernels, respectively. For the confinement quantities, the low-lying Dirac/fermion eigenmodes are found to give negligible contribution, while they are essential for chiral symmetry breaking. These relations indicate no direct …
Monopole operators play a central role in 3 dimensional supersymmetric dualities: a careful understanding of their spectrum is necessary to match chiral operators on either sides of a conjectured duality. In Chern-Simons theories ($k\neq0$), monopole operators acquire an electric charge, thus they need to be "dressed" by chiral matter superfields to be made gauge-invariant. Here we present strong evidence that "dressed" monopoles appear in $SU(N)$ chiral theories even for $k=0$ because of mixed CS terms generated along certain Coulomb branch directions. Our analysis is based on the dimensional…
We utilize Coleman's theorem and show that quantum chromodynamics based on asymptotic freedom and confinement must have chiral symmetry realized as a spontaneously broken symmetry.
A calculation of the chiral anomaly on a finite lattice without fermion doubling is presented . The lattice gauge field is defined in the spirit of noncommutative geometry. Standard formulas for the continuum anomaly are obtained as a limit.
Using the eigen-mode of the QCD Dirac operator $\Slash D=γ^μD^μ$, we develop a manifestly gauge-covariant expansion and projection of the QCD operators such as the Wilson loop and the Polyakov loop. With this method, we perform a direct analysis of the correlation between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in lattice QCD Monte Carlo calculations. Even after removing the low-lying Dirac modes, which are responsible to chiral symmetry breaking, we find that the Wilson loop obeys the area law, and the string tension or the confinement force is almost unchanged. We find also that the Polyako…
We develop a manifestly gauge-covariant expansion and projection using the eigen-mode of the QCD Dirac operator. Applying this method to the Wilson loop and the Polyakov loop, we perform a direct analysis of the correlation between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in SU(3) lattice QCD calculation on 6^4 at beta=5.6 at the quenched level. Notably, the Wilson loop is found to obey the area law, and the slope parameter corresponding to the string tension or the confinement force is almost unchanged, even after removing the low-lying Dirac modes, which are responsible to chiral symmetry br…

We construct an effective Lagrangian which illustrates why color deconfines when chiral symmetry is restored in hot gauge theories with quarks in the fundamental representation. For quarks in the adjoint representation we show that while deconfinement and the chiral transition do not need to coincide, entanglement between them is still present. Extension to the chemical potential driven transition is discussed.
In this paper we study the properties of QCD at nonzero chiral density $ρ_5$, which is introduced through chiral chemical potential $μ_5$. The study is performed within lattice simulation of QCD with dynamical rooted staggered fermions. We first check that $ρ_5$ is generated at nonzero $μ_5$ and in the chiral limit observe $ρ_5 \sim Λ_{QCD}^2 μ_5$. We also test the possible connection between confinement and topological fluctuations. To this end, we measured the topological susceptibility $χ_{\mbox{\footnotesize top}}$ and string tension $σ$ for various values of $μ_5$. We observed that both s…
We identify two distinct, complementary gauge field configurations for QCD with SU(2) gauge group, one (instanton-like configurations) having to do with chiral symmetry breaking but not with confinement, the other (regularized Wu-Yang monopoles) very likely responsible for confinement but unrelated to chiral symmetry breaking. Our argument is based on a semiclassical analysis of fermion zero modes in these backgrounds, made by use of a gauge field decomposition recently introduced by Faddeev and Niemi. Our result suggests that the two principal dynamical phenomena in QCD, confinement and chira…
We revisit the chiral anomaly in the quantum kinetic theory in the Wigner function formalism under the background field approximation. Our results show that the chiral anomaly is actually from the Dirac sea or the vacuum contribution in the un-normal-ordered Wigner function. We also demonstrate that this contribution modifies the chiral kinetic equation for antiparticles.

We study the relation between quark confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD. Using lattice QCD formalism, we analytically express the various "confinement indicators", such as the Polyakov loop, its fluctuations, the Wilson loop, the inter-quark potential and the string tension, in terms of the Dirac eigenmodes. In the Dirac spectral representation, there appears a power of the Dirac eigenvalue $λ_n$ such as $λ_n^{N_t-1}$, which behaves as a reduction factor for small $λ_n$. Consequently, since this reduction factor cannot be cancelled, the low-lying Dirac eigenmodes give negligibly sm…
We analyze the vacuum structure of SU(2) QCD with multiple massless adjoint representation fermions formulated on a small spatial $S^1 \times \R^3$. The absence of thermal fluctuations, and the fact that quantum fluctuations favoring the vacuum with unbroken center symmetry in a weakly coupled regime renders the interesting dynamics of these theories analytically calculable. Confinement, the area law behavior for large Wilson loops, and the generation of the mass gap in the gluonic sector are shown analytically. By abelian duality transformation, the long distance effective theory of QCD is ma…
Two-dimensional QED with $N$ flavor fermions is solved at zero and finite temperature with arbitrary fermion masses to explore QCD physics such as chiral condensate and string tension. The problem is reduced to solving a Schrödinger equation for $N$ degrees of freedom with a specific potential determined by the ground state of the Schrödinger problem itself.
We consider a holographic quark model where the confinement is a consequence of the quark condensate. Surprisingly, the equation of motion of our holographic model can be mapped to the old spin-less bag model. Both models correctly reproduce the linear Regge trajectory of hadrons for zero quark mass. For the case of non-zero quark mass, the model lead us to Heun's equation. The mass term is precisely the origin of the higher singularity, which changes the system behavior drastically. Our result can shed some light on why the chiral transition is so close to the confinement transition. In the m…
We analyze, in the framework of AdS/CFT correspondence, the gauge theory phase structure that are supposed to be dual to the recently found non-supersymmetric dilatonic deformations to AdS_5 X S^5 in type IIB string theory. Analyzing the probe D7-brane dynamics in the backgrounds of our interest, which corresponds to the fundamental N=2 hypermultiplet, we show that the chiral bi-fermion condensation responsible for spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking is not logically related to the phenomenon of confinement.
We show that the anomaly of nonlocal symmetry can be canceled by the well-known Wess-Zumino acton which cancels the gauge anomaly in the two-dimensional chiral electrodynamics.
A representation for the phase of a chiral determinant in terms of a path integral of a local action is constructed. This representation is used to modify the action of chiral SU(2) fermions removing the global anomaly.
We use strongly coupled lattice QED with two flavors of massless staggered fermions to model the physics of pions in two-flavor massless QCD. Our model has the right chiral symmetries and can be studied efficiently with cluster algorithms. In particular we can tune the strength of the QCD anomaly and thus study its effects on the chiral phase transition. Our study confirms the widely accepted view point that the chiral phase transition is first order in the absence of the anomaly. Turning on the anomaly weakens the transition and turns it second order at a critical anomaly strength. The anomal…
Axial anomaly and nesting is elucidated in the context of the inhomogeneous chiral phase. Using the Gross-Neveu models in 1+1 dimensions, we shall discuss axial anomaly and nesting from two different points of view: one is homogeneous chiral transition and the other is the Ferrel-Fulde-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state in superconductivity, which are closely related to each other by way of duality. It is shown that axial anomaly leads to a particular kind of the FFLO state within the two dimensional Nambu-Jona Lasinio model, where axial anomaly is manifested in a different mode. Nesting is a dri…
We consider the field renormalization group (RG) of two coupled one-spatial dimension (1D) spinless fermion chains under intraforward, interforward, interbackscattering and interumklapp interactions until two-loops order. Up to this order, we demonstrate the quantum confinement in the RG flow, where the interband chiral Fermi points reduce to single chiral Fermi points and the renormalized interaction couplings have Luttinger liquid fixed points. We show that this quasi-1D system is equivalently described in terms of one and two-color interactions and address the problem of quantum anomaly, in…
We construct a wave-functional whose argument couples to boundary fermion currents in the AdS/CFT correspondence. Using this we calculate the contributions from bulk fermions to the chiral anomaly that give the subleading order term in the exact $N$-dependence of the chiral anomaly of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM. The result agrees with the calculation of Bilal & Chu.
By completing the old discussion of K.~Wilson, we express the chiral anomaly in terms of a double integral of a three-point function of chiral currents over an arbitrarily small region in the coordinate space. An integrability condition provides an important finite local counterterm to the integral.
We construct an anomaly-preserving compactification of 4d gauge theories, including $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory, $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, and QCD, down to 2d by turning on 't Hooft flux through $T^2$. It provides a new framework to analytically calculate nonperturbative properties such as confinement, chiral symmetry breaking, and multi-branch structure of vacua. We give the semiclassical description of these phenomena based on the center vortex and show that it enjoys the same anomaly matching condition with the original $4$d gauge theory. We conjecture that the weak-co…
Inspired by the construction of the Gribov-Zwanziger action in the Landau gauge, we introduce a quark model exhibiting both confinement and chiral symmetry aspects. An important feature is the incorporation of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in a renormalizable fashion. The quark propagator in the condensed vacuum turns out to be of a confining type. Besides a real pole, it exhibits complex conjugate poles. The resulting spectral form is explicitly shown to violate positivity, indicative of its unphysical character. Moreover, the ensuing quark mass function fits well to existing lattice d…
The bulk quantization method is used for regularizing a conventional four dimensional theory of massless fermions coupled to an external non-Abelian gauge field and for subsequently evaluating the associated Ward identity. As a result one obtains the well-known chiral anomaly.
The CPT anomaly, which was first seen in perturbation theory for certain four-dimensional chiral gauge theories, is also present in the exact result for a class of two-dimensional chiral U(1) gauge theories on the torus. Specifically, the chiral determinant for periodic fermion fields changes sign under a CPT transformation of the background gauge field. There is, in fact, an anomaly of Lorentz invariance, which allows for the CPT theorem to be circumvented.
We recalculate the chiral anomaly in the Abelian gauge model in which a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ field is directly coupled to a Rarita-Schwinger spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ field, using the extended theory in which there is an exact fermionic gauge invariance. Since the standard gauge fixing and ghost analysis applies to this theory, the ghost contribution to the chiral anomaly is $-1$ times the standard chiral anomaly for spin-$\frac{1}{2}$. Calculation of the fermion loop Feynman diagrams contributing to the coupled model anomaly gives a result of $6$ times the standard anomaly, so the total anomaly is $5$…
An elementary derivation of the chiral gauge anomaly in all even dimensions is given in terms of noncommutative traces of pseudo-differential operators.
We consider chiral fermions interacting minimally with abelian and non-abelian gauge fields. Using a path integral approach and exploring the consequences of a mechanism of symmetry restoration, we show that the gauge anomaly has null expectation value in the vacuum for both cases (abelian and non-abelian). We argue that the same mechanism has no possibility to cancel the chiral anomaly, what eliminates competition between chiral and gauge symmetry at full quantum level. We also show that the insertion of the gauge anomaly in arbitrary gauge invariant correlators gives a null result, which poi…
Using the heat kernel regularization we show that the Abelian chiral anomaly in the limit of infinite temperature it is not a well defined quantity, contrary to what happens at any finite temperature. We show that there is an ambiguity in the ordering of the limits of infinite temperature and removal of the cut-off so that changing this ordering we find different results for the chiral anomaly. We discuss these cases and their possible interpretation.
We study low-energy dynamics of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ $SU(N)$ "chiral" gauge theories with $F$ fundamental and $\bar{F}$ anti-fundamental matters without a Chern-Simons term. Compared to a naive semi-classical analysis of the Coulomb branch, its quantum structure is highly richer than expected due to so-called "dressed" Coulomb branch (monopole) operators. We propose dualities and confinement phases for the "chiral" $SU(N)$ theories. The theories with $N>F > \bar{F}$ exhibit spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. The very many Coulomb branch operators generally remain exactly massless…
We studied the Adler-Bardeen-Bell-Jackiw anomaly in the context of a finite chiral quark model known as the Spectral Quark Model. Within this model, we obtain the general non-local form of the axial vertex compatible with a non vanishing axial coupling, in the chiral limit. The triangle anomaly is computed and we show that the obtained dependence of the axial vertex with the spectral mass is necessary to ensure both finiteness and the correct violation of the chiral Ward-Takahashi identity.
It is pointed out that the chiral anomaly in 1+1 dimensions should be observed in toroidal carbon nanotubes on a planar geometry with varying magnetic field. We show that the chiral anomaly is closely connected with the persistent current in a one-dimensional metallic ring.
In the Schwinger model at finite temperature, we derive a closed form result for the chiral anomaly which arises from the long distance behavior of the electric field \cite{frenkel}. We discuss the general properties associated with this thermal anomaly as well as its relation with the "index" of the Dirac operator. We further show that the thermal anomaly, like the zero temperature anomaly which arises from the ultraviolet behavior of the theory, does not receive any contribution from higher loops. Finally, we determine the complete effective action as well as the anomaly functional on both t…
The topological structure of the Nieh-Yan form in 4-dimensional manifold is given by making use of the decomposition of spin connection. The case of the generalized Nieh-Yan form on $2^d$-dimensional manifold is discussed with an example of 8-dimensional case studied in detail. The chiral anomaly with nonvanishing torsion is studied also. The further contributions from torsional part to chiral anomaly are found coming from the zeroes of some fields under pure gauge condition.
We investigate the trace anomaly of a chiral fermion in dimensional regularization, considering in detail the simplest case of coupling to an abelian gauge field. We apply the Breitenlohner-Maison/'t Hooft-Veltman prescription for dealing with the chiral matrix $γ^5$ and verify that no parity-odd term arises in the trace anomaly. The issue treated here is analogous to that of a chiral fermion in curved spacetime, discussed in recent literature. The advantage of having a simplified background minimizes the amount of algebraic calculations and allows pinpointing better the subtle points carried …
The chiral U(1) anomalies associated with a fermion of spin 1/2 interacting with nonabelian vector and axial-vector fields in four- and six-dimensional curved space are given in tensorial form.
We study effects associated with the chiral anomaly for a cascading $SU(N+M)\times SU(N)$ gauge theory using gauge/gravity duality. In the gravity dual the anomaly is a classical feature of the supergravity solution, and the breaking of the U(1) R-symmetry down to ${\bf Z}_{2M}$ proceeds via the Higgs mechanism.
We study chiral SU(N) supersymmetric gauge theories with matter in the antifundamental and antisymmetric representations. For SU(5) with two families, we show how to reproduce the non-perturbatively generated superpotential, and we discuss dynamical supersymmetry breaking purely in terms of the Konishi anomaly. We apply the same technique in general to SU(N) with one family. We also briefly comment on the chiral ring for these theories.
The quantization of the chiral Schwinger model $(χQED_{2})$ with one-parameter class Faddeevian regularization is hampered by the chiral anomaly, i.e., the Gauss law commutator exhibits Faddeev's anomaly. To overcome this kind of problem, we propose to eliminate this anomaly by embedding the theory through a new gauge-invariant formalism based on the enlargement of the phase space with the introduction of Wess-Zumino(WZ) fields and the symplectic approach. This process opens up a possibility to formulate different, but dynamically equivalent, gauge invariant versions for the model and also giv…
We show that the chiral anomaly of quantum field theories with Dirac fermions subject to an axial background field is an inherent property of kinematics of a perfect classical fluid. Celebrated Beltrami flows (stationary solutions of Euler equations with extensive helicity) exhibit the chiral anomaly equivalent to that known for Dirac fermions. A prominent effect of the chiral anomaly is the transport electric current at equilibrium. We show that it is also a property of Beltrami flows.
The two-dimensional chiral anomaly is calculated using differential regularization. It is shown that the anomaly emerges naturally in the vector and axial Ward identities on the same footing as the four-dimensional case. The vector gauge symmetry can be achieved by an appropriate choice of the mass scales without introducing the seagull term. We have analyzed the reason why such a universal result can be obtained in differential regularization.
We evaluate the Polyakov loop and string tension at zero and finite temperature in $QED_2.$ Using bozonization the problem is reduced to solving the Schrödinger equation with a particular potential determined by the ground state. In the presence of two sources of opposite charges the vacuum angle parameter $θ$ changes by $2π(q/e)$, independent of the number of flavors. This, in turn, alters the chiral condensate. Particularly, in the one flavor case through a simple computer algorithm, we explore the chiral dynamics of a heavy fermion.
I recall my collaboration with David Gross. A result about descendants of the chiral anomaly is presented: Chern-Simons terms can be written as total derivatives.
