We employ an isospin dependent version of the QMD transport model to study the influence of the isospin dependent part of the nuclear matter equation of state and in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross-sections on the dynamics of heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies. We find that the extraction of useful information on the isospin-dependent part of the equation of state of nuclear matter from proton or neutron elliptic flows is obstructed by their sensitivity to model parameters and in-medium values of nucleon-nucleon cross-sections. Opposite to that, neutron-proton elliptic flow difference shows little dependence on those variables while its dependence on the isospin asymmetric EoS is enhanced. Comparison with experimental neutron-hydrogen FOPI-LAND data excludes the extreme super-soft scenarios for the high density dependence of asy-EoS. Existing neutron-proton elliptic flow difference experimental data are poised with uncertainties and cannot constrain the asy-EoS any further.
We present predictions for proton skins based on isospin-asymmetric equations of state derived microscopically from high-precision chiral few-nucleon interactions. Moreover, we investigate the relation between the neutron skin of a nucleus and the difference between the proton radii of the corresponding mirror nuclei.
We show that fully aligned neutron-proton pairs play a crucial role in the low-energy spectroscopy of nuclei. with valence nucleons in a high-j orbital. Their dominance is valid in nuclei with valence neutrons and protons in different high-j orbitals as well as in N = Z nuclei, where all nucleons occupy the same orbital. We demonstrate analytically this generic feature of the neutron-proton interaction for a variety of systems with four valence nucleons interacting through realistic, effective forces. The dominance of fully aligned neutron-proton pairs results from the combined effect of (i) a…
Several phenomena occurring in neutron stars are affected by the elementary excitations that characterize the stellar matter. In particular, low-energy excitations can play a major role in the emission and propagation of neutrinos, neutron star cooling and transport processes. In this paper, we consider the elementary modes in the star region where both proton and neutron components are superfluid. We study the overall spectral functions of protons, neutrons and electrons on the basis of the Coulomb and nuclear interactions. This study is performed in the framework of the Random Phase Approxim…
Using the multiphase transport (AMPT) model, we study the relative neutron density fluctuation and neutron-proton correlation in matter produced by Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\text{NN}} = $7.7-200 GeV. The rapidity, centrality, and energy dependence of these two observations are also discussed. The light nuclei yield ratio of proton, deuteron, and triton $N_tN_p/N_d^2$ calculated directly from the relative neutron density fluctuation and neutron-proton correlation, decreases with rapidity coverage and increases with collision centrality. Our study also found that the ratio does not exhibit a…
The long standing problem of neutron-proton pairing correlations is revisited by employing the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov formalism with neutron-proton mixing in both the particle-hole and particle-hole channels. We compare numerical calculations performed within this method with an exact pairing model based on the $SO(8)$ algebra. The neutron-proton mixing is included in our calculations by performing rotations in the isospin space using the isocranking technique.
We use a relativistic model of meson-exchange currents to compute the proton-neutron and proton-proton yields in $(e,e')$ scattering from $^{12}$C in the 2p-2h channel. We compute the response functions and cross section with the relativistic Fermi gas model for a range of kinematics from intermediate to high momentum transfers. We find a large contribution of neutron-proton configurations in the initial state, as compared to proton-proton pairs. The different emission probabilities of distinct species of nucleon pairs are produced in our model only by meson-exchange currents, mainly by the $Δ…
The thermal evolution of Neutron Stars is affected by the elementary excitations that characterize the stellar matter. In particular, the low-energy excitations, with a spectrum linear in momentum, can play a major role in the emission and propagation of neutrinos. In this paper, we focus on the elementary modes in the region of proton superfluidity, where the neutron component is expected to have a very small or zero pairing gap. We study the overall spectral functions of protons, neutrons and electrons on the basis of the Coulomb and nuclear interactions. This study is performed in the frame…
The onset of 1S0 proton spin-singlet pairing in neutron-star matter is studied in the framework of the BCS theory including medium polarization effects. The strong three-body coupling of the diproton pairs with the dense neutron environment and the self-energy effects severely reduce the gap magnitude, so to reshape the scenario of the proton superfluid phase inside the star. The vertex corrections due to the medium polarization are attractive in all isospin-asymmetry range at low density and tend to favor the pairing in that channel. However quantitative estimates of their effect on the energ…
We utilize a nuclear shell model Hamiltonian with only two adjustable parameters to generate, for the first time, exact solutions for pairing correlations for light to medium-mass nuclei, including the challenging proton-neutron pairs, while also identifying the primary physics involved. In addition to single-particle energy and Coulomb potential terms, the shell model Hamiltonian consists of an isovector $T=1$ pairing interaction and an average proton-neutron isoscalar $T=0$ interaction, where the $T=0$ term describes the average interaction between non-paired protons and neutrons. This Hamil…
We treat proton-neutron pairing amplitudes, in addition to the nuclear deformation, as generator coordinates in a calculation of the neutrinoless double-beta decay of 76Ge. We work in two oscillator shells, with a Hamiltonian that includes separable terms in the quadrupole, spin-isospin, and pairing (isovector and isoscalar) channels. Our approach allows larger single-particle spaces than the shell model and includes the important physics of the proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) without instabilities near phase transitions. After comparing the results of a simplifi…
The time evolution of both proton and anti-proton $v_2$ flows from Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=7.7 GeV are examined by using both pure cascade and mean-field potential versions of the UrQMD model. Due to a stronger repulsion at the early stage introduced by the repulsive potentials and hence much less annihilation probabilities, anti-protons are frozen out earlier with smaller $v_2$ values. Therefore, the experimental data of anti-proton $v_2$ as well as the flow difference between proton and anti-proton can be reasonably described with the potential version of UrQMD.
The microscopic coupled-channel calculation of inelastic proton scattering is performed for the study of neutron excitations in $2^+_1$ states of $^{18}$O, $^{10}$Be, $^{12}$Be, and $^{16}$C. Proton-nucleus potentials in the coupled-channel calculation are microscopically derived by folding the Melbourne $g$-matrix $NN$ interaction with matter and transition densities of target nuclei obtained by the structure model calculation of antisymmetrized molecular dynamics. The calculated result reasonably reproduces the elastic and inelastic proton scattering cross sections, and supports the dominant…
The analysis of self-consistency and proton-neutron interaction effects in the buildup of differential charge radii has been carried out in covariant density functional theoretical calculations without pairing interaction. Two configurations of the $^{218}$Pb nucleus, generated by the occupation of the neutron $1i_{11/2}$ and $2g_{9/2}$ subshells, are compared with the ground state configuration in $^{208}$Pb. The interaction of added neutron(s) and the protons forming the $Z=82$ proton core is responsible for a major contribution to the buildup of differential charge radii. It depends on the …
Photon from neutron-proton bremsstrahlung in p+Pb reactions is examined as a potential probe of the neutron-skin thickness in different centralities and at different proton incident energies. It is shown that the best choice of reaction environment is about 140MeV for the incident proton and the 95\%-100\% centrality for the reaction system since the incident proton mainly interacts with neutrons inside the skin of the target and thus leads to different photon production to maximal extent. Moreover, considering two main uncertainties from both photon production probability and nucleon-nucleon …
We show that the symmetry-restored paired mean-field states (quasiparticle vacua) properly account for isoscalar versus isovector nuclear pairing properties. Full particle-number, spin, and isospin symmetries are restored in a simple SO(8) proton-neutron pairing model, and prospects to implement a similar approach in a realistic setting are delineated. Our results show that, provided all symmetries are restored, the pictures based on pair-condensate and quartet-condensate wave functions represent equivalent ways of looking at the physics of nuclear proton-neutron pairing.
The formal implications of a quartet coherent state ansatz for proton-neutron pairing are analyzed. Its nonlinear annihilation operators, which generalize the BCS linear quasiparticle operators, are computed in the quartetting case. Their structure is found to generate nontrivial relationships between the many body correlation functions. The intrinsic structure of the quartet coherent state is detailed, as it hints to the precise correspondence between the quartetting picture and the symmetry restored pair condensate picture for the proton-neutron pairing correlations.
We study the proton-neutron RPA with an extended Lipikin-Meshkov-Glick model. We pay attention to the effect of correlated ground state and the case in which neutron and proton numbers are different. The effect of the correlated ground state are tested on the basis of quasi-boson approximation. We obtain the result that RPA excitation energies and transition strengths are in a good agreement with the exact solution up to a certain strength of the particle-particle interaction. However, the transition strength becomes worse if we consider the case in which neutron and proton numbers are differe…
Previous studies have shown that the ground state of systems of nucleons composed by an equal number of protons and neutrons interacting via proton-neutron pairing forces can be described accurately by a condensate of $α$-like quartets. Here we extend these studies to the low-lowing excited states of these systems and show that these states can be accurately described by breaking a quartet from the ground state condensate and replacing it with an "excited" quartet. This approach, which is analogous to the one-broken-pair approximation employed for like-particle pairing, is analysed for various…
We report results of the first systematic simulation of proton and neutron density distributions in central heavy-ion collisions within the beam energy range of $ E_{\rm beam} \leq 800 \, \text{MeV/nucl}$ using pBUU and TDHF models. The symmetric $^\text{40}$Ca +$^\text{40}$Ca, $^\text{48}$Ca +$^\text{48}$Ca, $^\text{100}$Sn +$^\text{100}$Sn and $^\text{120}$Sn + $^\text{120}$Sn and asymmetric $^\text{40}$Ca +$^\text{48}$Ca and $^\text{100}$Sn +$^\text{120}$Sn systems were chosen for the simulations. We find limits on the maximum proton and neutron densities and the related proton-neutron asym…
