Some one-neutron halo nuclei can emit a proton in a beta decay of the halo neutron. The branching ratio towards this rare decay mode is calculated within a two-body potential model of the initial core+neutron bound state and final core+proton scattering states. The decay probability per second is evaluated for the $^{11}$Be, $^{19}$C and $^{31}$Ne one-neutron halo nuclei. It is very sensitive to the neutron separation energy.
The beta delayed deuteron emission from $^6$He is studied in a dynamical microscopic cluster model. This model gives a reasonably good description for all the subsystems of $^6$He and $^6$Li in a coherent way, without any free parameter. The beta decay transition probability to the $^6$Li ground state is underestimated by a few percents. The theoretical beta delayed deuteron spectrum is close to experiment but it is also underestimated by about a factor 1.7. We argue that, in spite of their different magnitudes, both underestimations might have a common origin. The model confirms that the neut…
The $^{11}$Be neutron halo nucleus appears to decay into $^{10}$Be with a rate that exceeds expectations. Neutron disappearance into dark matter, beta decay of a halo neutron, or beta-delayed proton decay have been offered as explanations. In this work we study the latter option; we carry out shell model calculations and sequential decay analysis examining the beta-delayed proton decay going through a resonance in $^{11}$B. The narrow energy window, lack of states with sufficient spectroscopic strength, overwhelming alpha decay branch, all make reconciling the observed rate with beta-delayed p…
A systematic study of the total $β$-decay half-lives and $β$-delayed neutron emission probabilities is performed. The $β$-strength function is treated within the self-consistent density-functional + continuum-QRPA framework including the Gamow-Teller and first-forbidden transitions. The experimental total $β$-decay half-lives for the Ni isotopes with $A\leq$76 are described satisfactorily. The half-lives predicted from $A$=70 up to $A$=86 reveal fairly regular $A$-behaviour which results from simultaneous account for the Gamow-Teller and first-forbidden transitions. For $Z\approx$ 28 nuclei, a…
The beta+ decay of very neutron deficient 43Cr has been studied by means of an imaging time projection chamber which allowed recording tracks of charged particles. Events of beta-delayed emission of one-, two-, and three protons were clearly identified. The absolute branching ratios for these channels were determined to be 81(4)%, 7.1(4)%, and 0.08(3)%, respectively. The 43Cr is thus established as the second case in which the beta-3p decay occurs. Although the feeding to the proton-bound states in 43V is expected to be negligible, the large branching ratio of 12(4)% for decays without proton …
Beta-delayed neutron emission and $β$-delayed fission ($β$df) probabilities were calculated for heavy, neutron-rich nuclei using the Los Alamos coupled Quasi-Particle Random Phase Approximation plus Hauser-Feshbach (QRPA+HF) approach. In this model, the compound nucleus is initially populated by $β$-decay and is followed through subsequent statistical decays taking into account competition between neutrons, $γ$-rays and fission. The primary output of these calculations includes branching ratios along with neutron and $γ$-ray spectra. We find a relatively large region of heavy nuclides where th…
We compute nuclear matrix elements of neutrinoless double-beta decay mediated by light Majorana-neutrino exchange in the A = 6 system. The goal is to benchmark two many-body approaches, the No-Core Shell Model and the Multi-Reference In-Medium Similarity Renormalization Group. We use the SRG-evolved chiral N3LO-EM500 potential for the nuclear interaction, and make the approximation that isospin is conserved. We compare the results of the two approaches as a function of the cutoff on the many-body basis space. Although differences are seen in the predicted nuclear radii, the ground-state energi…
Background: The process of beta-delayed fission (bDF) provides a versatile tool to study low-energy fission in nuclei far away from the beta-stability line, especially for nuclei which do not fission spontaneously. Purpose: The aim of this paper is to investigate systematic trends in bDF partial half-lives. Method: A semi-phenomenological framework was developed to systematically account for the behavior of bDF partial half-lives. Results: The bDF partial half-life appears to exponentially depend on the difference between the Q value for beta decay of the parent nucleus and the fission-barrier…
We decompose the neutrinoless double-beta decay matrix elements into sums of products over the intermediate nucleus with two less nucleons. We find that the sum is dominated by the J^pi=0^+ ground state of this intermediate nucleus for both the light and heavy neutrino decay processes. This provides a new theoretical tool for comparing and improving nuclear structure models. It also provides the connection to two-nucleon transfer experiments.
We measured the beta-delayed alpha-particle emission spectrum of 16N with a sensitivity for beta-decay branching ratios of the order of 10-10. The 16N nuclei were produced using the d(15N,16N)p reaction with 70 MeV 15N beams and a deuterium gas target 7.5 cm long at a pressure of 1250 torr. The 16N nuclei were collected (over 10 s) using a thin aluminum foil with an areal density of 180 mu g/cm2 tilted at 7 Deg with respect to the beam. The activity was transferred to the counting area by means of a stepping motor in less than 3 s with the counting carried out over 8 s. The beta-delayed alpha-…
We propose to use charged-current neutrino-nucleus interactions as a probe of the many virtual transitions involved in neutrinoless double-beta decay. By performing neutrino and anti-neutrino interaction studies on the initial and final nucleus respectively, one can get information on the two branches involved in the double-beta decay process. The measurement of such reactions could help to further constrain double-beta decay predictions on the half-lives.
Consideration of memory of spin and parity in the fissioning compound nucleus by applying the Hauser-Feshbach fission fragment decay model to photonuclear reactions
We dispute the alteration by Azuma et al. of the energy calibration of the Mainz('71) data on the beta-delayed alpha-particle emission of $^{16}N$ as well as the very justification of the recalibration. We use the unaltered data to observe a pronounced disagreement between the TRIUMF('94) and Mainz('71) data sets on both the high and low energy sides of the primary peak (at 2.36 MeV) of the $^{16}N$ alpha-spectrum. We cannot support the dismissal of the Mainz('71) spectrum by the TRIUMF collaboration and emphasize the need to include it in R-matrix fits. We discuss the need for new improved da…
The neutron-rich $^{11}$Li halo nucleus is unique among nuclei with known separation energies by its ability to emit a proton and a neutron in a $β$ decay process. The branching ratio towards this rare decay mode is evaluated within a three-body model for the initial bound state and with Coulomb three-body final scattering states. The branching ratio should be comprised between two extreme cases, i.e.\ a lower bound $6 \times 10^{-12}$ obtained with a pure Coulomb wave and an upper bound $5 \times 10^{-10}$ obtained with a plane wave. A simple model with modified Coulomb waves provides plausib…
We compute the neutrino detection rates to be expected at a low-energy beta-beam facility. We consider various nuclei as neutrino detectors and compare the case of a small versus large storage ring.
We examine time reversal invariance in the beta-decays of 8B(2+) and 8Li(2+) to 8Be(2+) in detail, with particular attention to final state interactions of the two alpha particles from the decay of 8Be, and of the electron (positron) with the daughter nucleus. A R-matrix formulation is used, with the initial state described by a shell model. The R-matrix parameters are obtained by fitting the alpha-αscattering phase shifts and allowed beta-decay rates. Because the nuclear final state interaction effects on the time reversal test come from second forbidden beta-decays, they are small and can be…
Two new facilities have recently been proposed to measure low energy neutrino-nucleus cross sections, the nu-SNS (Spallation Neutron Source) and low energy beta beams. The former produces neutrinos by pion decay at rest, while the latter produces neutrinos from the beta decays of accelerated ions. One of the uses of neutrino-nucleus cross section measurements is for supernova studies, where typical neutrino energies are 10s of MeV. In this energy range there are many different components to the nuclear response and this makes the theoretical interpretation of the results of such an experiment …
Gamow-Teller strength distributions, beta-decay half-lives, and beta-delayed neutron emission are investigated in neutron-rich Zr and Mo isotopes within a deformed quasiparticle random-phase approximation. The approach is based on a self-consistent Skyrme Hartree-Fock mean field with pairing correlations and residual separable particle-hole and particle-particle forces. Comparison with recent measurements of half-lives stresses the important role that nuclear deformation plays in the description of beta-decay properties in this mass region.
As shown in Ref. \cite{Rod09}, the Fermi part $M_{F}^{0ν}$ of the total $0νββ$-decay nuclear matrix element $M^{0ν}$ can be related to the single Fermi transition matrix element between the isobaric analog state (IAS) of the ground state of the initial nucleus and the ground state of the final nucleus. The latter matrix element could be measured in charge-exchange reactions. Here we discuss a possibility of such a measurement for $^{48}$Ca and estimate the cross-section of the reaction $^{48}$Ti(n,p)$^{48}$Sc(IAS).
As shown in Ref.\cite{Rod09}, the Fermi nuclear matrix element $M^{0ν}_F$ of neutrinoless double beta ($0νββ$) decay can be reconstructed if one is able to measure the isospin-forbidden single Fermi transition matrix element from the ground state of the final nucleus to the isobaric analog state (IAS) of the initial nucleus, for instance by means of charge-exchange reactions of the $(n,p)$-type. Here, simple estimates for $^{82}$Se are made which show that indeed the tiny cross section $σ_{np}(0_f^+\to IAS)$ is dominated by the admixture of the double IAS in the ground state of the final nucle…
The systematic study of (anti-)neutrino accompanied beta^-beta^-, beta^+beta^+ decays and beta^+/EC, EC/EC electron captures is performed under the assumption of single intermediate nuclear state dominance. The corresponding half-lives are evaluated both for transitions to the ground state as well as to the 0^+ and 2^+ excited states of final nucleus. It is stressed that the hypothesis of single state dominance can be confirmed or ruled out by the precision measurements of the differential characteristics of the 2nbb-decays of 100Mo and 116Cd as well as beta^+/EC electron capture in 106Cd, 130…
By making use of the isospin conservation by strong interaction, the Fermi $0νββ$ nuclear matrix element $M_{F}^{0ν}$ is transformed to acquire the form of an energy-weighted double Fermi transition matrix element. This useful representation allows reconstruction of the total $M_{F}^{0ν}$ provided a small isospin-breaking Fermi matrix element between the isobaric analog state in the intermediate nucleus and the ground state of the daughter nucleus could be measured, e.g. by charge-exchange reactions. Such a measurement could set a scale for the $0νββ$ nuclear matrix elements and help much to d…
We propose a consistent prescription for the derivation of the particle number and angular momentum projected QRPA (PQRPA) equation in the Generator Coordinate Method (GCM) framework for calculation of NME's of double-beta decay of axially deformed nuclei. We derive closed formulae for the calculation of excitation energies and wave functions of the intermediate nucleus.
The beta decay process of the 11Li halo nucleus into 9Li and d is studied in a three-body model. The 11Li nucleus is described as a 9Li+n+n system in hyperspherical coordinates on a Lagrange mesh. Various 9Li+d potentials are compared involving a forbidden state, a physical bound state, and a resonance near 0.25 MeV in the s-wave. With an added surface absorption, they are compatible with elastic scattering data. The transition probability per time unit is quite sensitive to the location of the resonance. For a fixed resonance location, it does not depend much on the potential choice at varian…
Beta-decay properties of neutron-rich Ca, Ti, and Cr isotopes are studied within a deformed proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation. The underlying mean field is described self-consistently from deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock calculations with pairing correlations. Residual spin-isospin interactions in the particle-hole and particle-particle channels are also included in the formalism. The energy distributions of the Gamow-Teller strength, the beta-decay feedings, the beta-decay half-lives, and the beta-delayed neutron emission probabilities are discussed and compared with other …
The Gamow-Teller transition operator is written as a polynomial in the dipole proton-neutron and quadrupole charge conserving QRPA boson operators, using the prescription of the boson expansion technique of Belyaev-Zelevinski type. Then, the $2νββ$ process ending on the first $2^+$ state in the daughter nucleus is allowed via one, two and three boson states describing the odd-odd intermediate nucleus. The approach uses a single particle basis which is obtained by projecting out the good angular momentum from an orthogonal set of deformed functions. The basis for mother and daughter nuclei have…
The beta-strength in beta-delayed particle decays has up to now been defined in a somewhat ad hoc manner that depends on the decay mechanism. A simple, consistent definition is presented that fulfils the beta strength sum rules. Special consideration is given to the modifications needed when employing R-matrix fits to data. As an example the 11Be(beta-p) decay is investigated through simple models.
We present new results for the phase space factors involved in double beta decay for beta-beta- transitions to ground states and excited 0+1 states, for isotopes of experimental interest. The Coulomb distortion of the electron wave functions is treated by solving numerically the Dirac equation with inclusion of the finite nuclear size and electron screening effects, and using a Coulomb potential derived from a realistic proton density distribution in the daughter nucleus. Our results are compared with other results from literature, obtained in different approximations, and possible causes that…
We present a coupled Quasi-particle Random Phase Approximation and Hauser-Feshbach (QRPA+HF) model for calculating delayed particle emission. This approach uses microscopic nuclear structure information which starts with Gamow-Teller strength distributions in the daughter nucleus, and then follows the statistical decay until the initial available excitation energy is exhausted. Explicitly included at each particle emission stage is $γ$-ray competition. We explore this model in the context of neutron emission of neutron-rich nuclei and find that neutron-gamma competition can lead to both increa…
The nuclear matrix element for the two neutrino double beta decay (DBD) of 136Xe was evaluated by FSQP (Fermi Surface Quasi Particle model), where experimental GT strengths measured by the charge exchange reaction and those by the beta decay rates were used. The 2 neutrino DBD matrix element is given by the sum of products of the single beta matrix elements via low-lying (Fermi Surface) quasi-particle states in the intermediate nucleus. 136Xe is the semi-magic nucleus with the closed neutron-shell, and the beta + transitions are almost blocked. Thus the 2 neutrino DBD is much suppressed. The e…

In this paper, beta-decay properties of even-even neutron-rich isotopes in the rare-earth mass region are studied within a microscopic theoretical approach based on a proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation. The underlying mean field is constructed selfconsistently from a deformed Hartree-Fock calculation with Skyrme interactions and pairing correlations to which particle-hole and particle-particle residual interactions are added. Nuclei in this mass region participate in the astrophysical rapid neutron capture process and are directly involved in the generation of the rare-ear…
Contrary to claims that the problem has been solved, the astrophysical E1 S-factor of \c12ag is not yet well known. R-Matrix analyses of elastic scattering data,\c12ag data, and data on the beta-delayed alpha-particle emission of N16 are not consistent and a small S-factor solution SE1(300) cannot be ruled out. In particular, data on the beta- delayed alpha-particle emission of N16 do not agree. The unaltered Mainz data do not agree with TRIUMF, but agree with both Seattle and Yale-UConn. The TRIUMF col- laboration has recalibratedthe Mainz('71) data; however, we dispute both the alteration of…
The beta-decay of a tritium nucleus produces an entangled quantum system, a beta electron, a helium nucleus, and an antineutrino. For finite collapse times, the post-collapse beta electron energy can originate from a range of pre-collapse energies due to the uncertainty principle. Long collapse times give negligible uncertainty, so the pre-collapse spectrum must approach that of isolated nuclei. We calculate the post-collapse electron spectrum which shows a collapse-dependent pileup near the endpoint. Comparison with observation shows that a collapse time of 1 x 10^-17 s explains the observed …
Beta decay is a well-established and efficient probe of nuclear structure and provides important information also for halo nuclei. Detailed decay studies of near-dripline nuclei are challenging, but are now feasible due to the technical progress during the last decades in isotope production as well as detection capabilities. The halo structure can change the dynamics of the decay process, most noticably when decays proceed directly to continuum states as seems to be the case in beta-delayed deuteron emission, a process only observed until now for the halo nuclei $^6$He and $^{11}$Li. The prono…
We review the status of the 12C(a,g)16O reaction rate, of importance for stellar processes in a progenitor star prior to a super-nova collapse. Several attempts to constrain the p-wave S-factor of the 12C(a,g)16O reaction at Helium burning temperatures (200 MK) using the beta-delayed alpha-particle emission of 16N have been made, and it is claimed that this S-factor is known, as quoted by the TRIUMF collaboration. In contrast reanalyses (by G.M. hale) of all thus far available data (including the 16N data) does not rule out a small S-factor solution. Furthermore, we improved our previous Yale-…
Half-lives $T_{1/2}^{2ν}$ for two neutrino positron double beta decay modes $β^{+}$EC/ECEC are calculated for $^{74}$Se, a nucleus of current experimental interest, using deformed shell model based on Hartree-Fock states employing a modified Kuo interaction in ($^{2}p_{3/2}$, $^{1}f_{5/2}$, $^{2}p_{1/2}$, $^{1}g_{9/2}$) space. The calculated half-life for the ECEC mode is $\sim 10^{26}$yr and it may be possible to observe this in the near future with improved sensitivity of experiments.
The hypothesis of the single state dominance (SSD) in the calculation of the two-neutrino double beta decay of Mo100 is tested by exact consideration of the energy denominators of the perturbation theory. Both transitions to the ground state as well as to the 0+ and 2+ excited states of the final nucleus Ru100 are considered. We demonstrate, that by experimental investigation of the single electron energy distribution and the angular correlation of the outgoing electrons, the SSD hypothesis can be confirmed or ruled out by a precise two-neutrino double beta decay measurement (e.g. by NEMO III …
We tabulate the ground-state odd-proton and odd-neutron spins and parities, proton and neutron pairing gaps, binding energy, one- and two-neutron separation energies, quantities related to beta-delayed one- and two-neutron emission probabilities, beta-decay energy release and half-life with respect to Gamow-Teller decay, one- and two-proton separation energies, and alpha-decay energy release and half-life for 8979 nuclei ranging from oxygen-16 to Z = 136, A = 339 and extending from the proton drip line to the neutron drip line. Single-particle level diagrams and other quantities are also prese…
The interpretation of nuclear observables in the laboratory frame in terms of the intrinsic deformation parameters beta and gamma is a classical theme in nuclear structure. Here we use the quadrupole invariants (Kumar), calculated within the framework of the configuration-interaction shell model, to clarify the meaning and limitations of nuclear shapes. We introduce a novel method that enables us to calculate accurately higher-order invariants and, therefore, the fluctuations in both beta and gamma. We find that the shape parameter beta often has a non-negligible degree of softness, and that t…
An exactly solvable model for a description of the two-neutrino double beta decay transition of the Fermi type is considered. By using perturbation theory an explicit dependence of the two-neutrino double beta decay matrix element on the like-nucleon pairing, particle-particle and particle-hole proton-neutron interactions by assuming a weak violation of isospin symmetry of Hamiltonian expressed with generators of the SO(5) group. It is found that there is a dominance of double beta decay transition through a single state of the intermediate nucleus. Then, an energy weighted sum rule connecting…
We give a complete, up-date list of the phase space factors (PSF) for beta-beta-, beta+beta+, EC beta+ and ECEC double beta decay (DBD) modes, in all nuclei of interest and possible transitions to final states. In calculation, the Coulomb distortion of the electron wave functions is treated by solving numerically the Dirac equation with inclusion of the finite nuclear size and electron screening effects. In addition to the previous calculations we use a Coulomb potential derived from a realistic proton density distribution in nucleus, improve the precision of the numerical routines used to sol…
An earlier publication "The implication of the atomic effects in neutrinoless double beta (0$νββ$) decay" written by Mei and Wei has motivated us to compare the decay Q value ($Q_{ββ}$) derived from the decay of the parent nucleus to the daughter nucleus with the two ejected beta particles in the final state to the $Q_{ββ}$ directly derived from the decay of the initial neutral atom to the final state of double-ionized daughter ion with the two ejected beta particles in the final state. We show that the results are the same, which is the mass-energy difference ($ΔMc^2$) subtracted by the total…
Recently an alpha-cluster model based on the pn-pair interactions with using the isospin invariance of nuclear force has been proposed. According to the model the excess neutron pairs fill out the free space in the core determined by the difference in the charge and matter radii of the alpha-clusters. Then the number of excess neutrons in beta-stable nuclei depends on the number of the core alpha-clusters. In such a representation the specific density of binding energy of core is the only parameter to fit the experimental binding energies of beta-stable nuclei and it turned out to be a constan…
Beta-decay properties of proton-rich odd-A and even-even Krypton isotopes are studied in the framework of a deformed selfconsistent Hartree-Fock calculation with density-dependent Skyrme forces, including pairing correlations between like nucleons in BCS approximation. Residual spin-isospin interactions are consistently included in the particle-hole and particle-particle channels and treated in Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation. The similarities and differences in the treatment of even-even and odd-A nuclei are stressed. Comparison to available experimental information is done for Gamow…
A theoretical analysis of the single-state dominance hypothesis for the two-neutrino double-beta decay rates is performed on the examples of the double-beta decays of 100Mo, 116Cd, and 128Te. We also test the validity of an extended low-lying-state dominance that takes into account the contributions of the low-lying excited states in the intermediate nucleus to the double-beta decay rates. This study has been accomplished for all the double-beta emitters for which we have experimental information on their half-lives. The theoretical framework is a proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase appr…
The effect of deformation on the two-neutrino double decay (2nbb-decay) for ground state transition 76Ge -> 76Se is studied in the framework of the deformed QRPA with separable Gamow-Teller residual interaction. A new suppression mechanism of the 2nbb-decay matrix element based on the difference in deformations of the initial and final nuclei is included. An advantage of this suppression mechanism in comparison with that associated with ground state correlations is that it allows a simultaneous description of the single beta and the 2nbb-decay. By performing a detail calculation of the 2nbb-de…
We evaluate the impact of using sets of fission yields given by the GEF code for spontaneous (sf), neutron-induced ((n,f)), and beta-delayed (betadf) fission processes which take into account the approximate initial excitation energy of the fissioning compound nucleus. We further explore energy-dependent fission dynamics in the r process by considering the sensitivity of our results to the treatment of the energy sharing and de-excitation of the fission fragments using the FREYA code. We show that the asymmetric-to-symmetric yield trends predicted by GEF can reproduce the high-mass edge of the…
Beta-decay properties of neutron-rich Zr and Mo isotopes are investigated within a microscopic theoretical approach based on the proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation. The underlying mean field is described self-consistently from deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock calculations with pairing correlations. Residual separable particle-hole and particle-particle forces are also included in the formalism. The structural evolution in these isotopic chains including both even and odd isotopes is analyzed in terms of the equilibrium deformed shapes. Gamow-Teller strength distributions, beta…
The effects of the phonon-phonon coupling on the beta-decay rates of neutron-rich nuclei are studied in a microscopic model based on Skyrme-type interactions. The approach uses a finite-rank separable approximation of the Skyrme-type particle-hole (p-h) residual interaction. Very large two-quasiparticle spaces can thus be treated. A redistribution of the Gamow-Teller (G-T) strength is found due to the tensor correlations and the 2p-2h fragmentation of G-T states. As a result, the beta-decay half-lives are decreased significantly. Using the Skyrme interaction SGII together with a volume-type pa…
After application of an analytical transformation, a new exact representation for the nuclear isospin-symmetry breaking correction $δ_C$ to superallowed beta decay is obtained. The correction is shown to be essentially the reciprocal of the square of an energy parameter $Ω_M$ which characterizes the charge-exchange monopole strength distribution. The proportionality coefficient in this relation is determined by basic properties of the ground state of the even-even parent nucleus, and should be reliably calculable in any realistic nuclear model. Therefore, the single parameter $Ω_M$ contains al…
The time evolution of a neutrino is dependent on its initial properties at creation including flavor, energy, and wavepacket size. There exists no solid theoretical prediction for the latter property in the context of nuclear beta decay, despite the importance of this process for the past, present, and future of neutrino experimentation. In this paper, we provide a quantitative prediction for the size of a beta-decay-induced electron antineutrino wavepacket by treating the parent nucleus decaying to an entangled antineutrino-recoil system using the formalism of open quantum systems. Of central…
Self-consistent random phase approximation (RPA) approaches in the relativistic framework are applied to calculate the isospin symmetry-breaking corrections $δ_c$ for the $0^+\to0^+$ superallowed transitions. It is found that the corrections $δ_c$ are sensitive to the proper treatments of the Coulomb mean field, but not so much to specific effective interactions. With these corrections $δ_c$, the nucleus-independent $\mathcal{F}t$ values are obtained in combination with the experimental $ft$ values in the most recent survey and the improved radiative corrections. It is found that the constancy…
In previous work it was shown that the radius of nucleus R is determined by the alpha-cluster structure and can be estimated on the number of alpha-clusters disregarding to the number of excess neutrons. A hypothesis also was made that the radius R_m of a beta-stable isotope, which is actually measured at electron scattering experiments, is determined by the volume occupied by the matter of the core plus the volume occupied by the peripheral alpha-clusters. In this paper it is shown that the condition R_m = R restricts the number of excess neutrons filling the core to provide the beta-stabilit…
Starting from chiral nuclear interactions, we evaluate the contribution of the leading-order contact transition operator to the nuclear matrix element (NME) of neutrinoless double-beta decay, assuming a light Majorana neutrino-exchange mechanism. The corresponding low-energy constant (LEC) is determined by fitting the transition amplitude of the $nn\to ppe^-e^-$ process to a recently proposed synthetic datum. We examine the dependence of the amplitude on similarity renormalization group (SRG) scale and chiral expansion order of the nuclear interaction, finding that both dependences can be comp…
