The $^{11}$Be neutron halo nucleus appears to decay into $^{10}$Be with a rate that exceeds expectations. Neutron disappearance into dark matter, beta decay of a halo neutron, or beta-delayed proton decay have been offered as explanations. In this work we study the latter option; we carry out shell model calculations and sequential decay analysis examining the beta-delayed proton decay going through a resonance in $^{11}$B. The narrow energy window, lack of states with sufficient spectroscopic strength, overwhelming alpha decay branch, all make reconciling the observed rate with beta-delayed proton decay difficult.
The beta+ decay of very neutron deficient 43Cr has been studied by means of an imaging time projection chamber which allowed recording tracks of charged particles. Events of beta-delayed emission of one-, two-, and three protons were clearly identified. The absolute branching ratios for these channels were determined to be 81(4)%, 7.1(4)%, and 0.08(3)%, respectively. The 43Cr is thus established as the second case in which the beta-3p decay occurs. Although the feeding to the proton-bound states in 43V is expected to be negligible, the large branching ratio of 12(4)% for decays without proton …
Beta-delayed neutron emission and $β$-delayed fission ($β$df) probabilities were calculated for heavy, neutron-rich nuclei using the Los Alamos coupled Quasi-Particle Random Phase Approximation plus Hauser-Feshbach (QRPA+HF) approach. In this model, the compound nucleus is initially populated by $β$-decay and is followed through subsequent statistical decays taking into account competition between neutrons, $γ$-rays and fission. The primary output of these calculations includes branching ratios along with neutron and $γ$-ray spectra. We find a relatively large region of heavy nuclides where th…
Background: The process of beta-delayed fission (bDF) provides a versatile tool to study low-energy fission in nuclei far away from the beta-stability line, especially for nuclei which do not fission spontaneously. Purpose: The aim of this paper is to investigate systematic trends in bDF partial half-lives. Method: A semi-phenomenological framework was developed to systematically account for the behavior of bDF partial half-lives. Results: The bDF partial half-life appears to exponentially depend on the difference between the Q value for beta decay of the parent nucleus and the fission-barrier…
The beta delayed deuteron emission from $^6$He is studied in a dynamical microscopic cluster model. This model gives a reasonably good description for all the subsystems of $^6$He and $^6$Li in a coherent way, without any free parameter. The beta decay transition probability to the $^6$Li ground state is underestimated by a few percents. The theoretical beta delayed deuteron spectrum is close to experiment but it is also underestimated by about a factor 1.7. We argue that, in spite of their different magnitudes, both underestimations might have a common origin. The model confirms that the neut…
We measured the beta-delayed alpha-particle emission spectrum of 16N with a sensitivity for beta-decay branching ratios of the order of 10-10. The 16N nuclei were produced using the d(15N,16N)p reaction with 70 MeV 15N beams and a deuterium gas target 7.5 cm long at a pressure of 1250 torr. The 16N nuclei were collected (over 10 s) using a thin aluminum foil with an areal density of 180 mu g/cm2 tilted at 7 Deg with respect to the beam. The activity was transferred to the counting area by means of a stepping motor in less than 3 s with the counting carried out over 8 s. The beta-delayed alpha-…
Some one-neutron halo nuclei can emit a proton in a beta decay of the halo neutron. The branching ratio towards this rare decay mode is calculated within a two-body potential model of the initial core+neutron bound state and final core+proton scattering states. The decay probability per second is evaluated for the $^{11}$Be, $^{19}$C and $^{31}$Ne one-neutron halo nuclei. It is very sensitive to the neutron separation energy.
The neutron-rich $^{11}$Li halo nucleus is unique among nuclei with known separation energies by its ability to emit a proton and a neutron in a $β$ decay process. The branching ratio towards this rare decay mode is evaluated within a three-body model for the initial bound state and with Coulomb three-body final scattering states. The branching ratio should be comprised between two extreme cases, i.e.\ a lower bound $6 \times 10^{-12}$ obtained with a pure Coulomb wave and an upper bound $5 \times 10^{-10}$ obtained with a plane wave. A simple model with modified Coulomb waves provides plausib…
We dispute the alteration by Azuma et al. of the energy calibration of the Mainz('71) data on the beta-delayed alpha-particle emission of $^{16}N$ as well as the very justification of the recalibration. We use the unaltered data to observe a pronounced disagreement between the TRIUMF('94) and Mainz('71) data sets on both the high and low energy sides of the primary peak (at 2.36 MeV) of the $^{16}N$ alpha-spectrum. We cannot support the dismissal of the Mainz('71) spectrum by the TRIUMF collaboration and emphasize the need to include it in R-matrix fits. We discuss the need for new improved da…
A systematic study of the total $β$-decay half-lives and $β$-delayed neutron emission probabilities is performed. The $β$-strength function is treated within the self-consistent density-functional + continuum-QRPA framework including the Gamow-Teller and first-forbidden transitions. The experimental total $β$-decay half-lives for the Ni isotopes with $A\leq$76 are described satisfactorily. The half-lives predicted from $A$=70 up to $A$=86 reveal fairly regular $A$-behaviour which results from simultaneous account for the Gamow-Teller and first-forbidden transitions. For $Z\approx$ 28 nuclei, a…
The beta-strength in beta-delayed particle decays has up to now been defined in a somewhat ad hoc manner that depends on the decay mechanism. A simple, consistent definition is presented that fulfils the beta strength sum rules. Special consideration is given to the modifications needed when employing R-matrix fits to data. As an example the 11Be(beta-p) decay is investigated through simple models.

Incident neutron energy dependence of delayed neutron yields of uranium and plutonium isotopes is investigated. A summation calculation of decay and fission yield data is employed, and the energy dependence of the latter part is considered in a phenomenological way. Our calculation systematically reproduces the energy dependence of delayed neutron yields by introducing an energy dependence of the most probable charge and the odd-even effect. The calculated fission yields are assessed by comparison with JENDL/FPY-2011, delayed neutron activities, and decay heats. Although the fission yields in …
Beta decay is a well-established and efficient probe of nuclear structure and provides important information also for halo nuclei. Detailed decay studies of near-dripline nuclei are challenging, but are now feasible due to the technical progress during the last decades in isotope production as well as detection capabilities. The halo structure can change the dynamics of the decay process, most noticably when decays proceed directly to continuum states as seems to be the case in beta-delayed deuteron emission, a process only observed until now for the halo nuclei $^6$He and $^{11}$Li. The prono…
Contrary to claims that the problem has been solved, the astrophysical E1 S-factor of \c12ag is not yet well known. R-Matrix analyses of elastic scattering data,\c12ag data, and data on the beta-delayed alpha-particle emission of N16 are not consistent and a small S-factor solution SE1(300) cannot be ruled out. In particular, data on the beta- delayed alpha-particle emission of N16 do not agree. The unaltered Mainz data do not agree with TRIUMF, but agree with both Seattle and Yale-UConn. The TRIUMF col- laboration has recalibratedthe Mainz('71) data; however, we dispute both the alteration of…
We review the status of the 12C(a,g)16O reaction rate, of importance for stellar processes in a progenitor star prior to a super-nova collapse. Several attempts to constrain the p-wave S-factor of the 12C(a,g)16O reaction at Helium burning temperatures (200 MK) using the beta-delayed alpha-particle emission of 16N have been made, and it is claimed that this S-factor is known, as quoted by the TRIUMF collaboration. In contrast reanalyses (by G.M. hale) of all thus far available data (including the 16N data) does not rule out a small S-factor solution. Furthermore, we improved our previous Yale-…
Gamow-Teller strength distributions, beta-decay half-lives, and beta-delayed neutron emission are investigated in neutron-rich Zr and Mo isotopes within a deformed quasiparticle random-phase approximation. The approach is based on a self-consistent Skyrme Hartree-Fock mean field with pairing correlations and residual separable particle-hole and particle-particle forces. Comparison with recent measurements of half-lives stresses the important role that nuclear deformation plays in the description of beta-decay properties in this mass region.
The negative-muon capture reaction (MCR) on the enriched $^{100}Mo$ isotope was studied for the first time to investigate neutrino nuclear response for neutrino-less double beta decays and supernova neutrino nuclear interactions. MCR on $^{100}Mo$ proceeds mainly as $^{100}Mo(mu,xn)^{100-x}Nb$ with $x$ being the number of neutrons emitted from MCR. The Nb isotope mass distribution was obtained by measuring delayed gamma-rays from radioactive $^{100-x}Nb$. By using the neutron emission model after MCR, the neutrino response (the strength distribution) for MCR was derived. Giant resonance (GR)-l…
The beta decay of molecular tritium currently provides the highest sensitivity in laboratory-based neutrino mass measurements. The upcoming Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment will improve the sensitivity to 0.2 eV, making a percent-level quantitative understanding of molecular effects essential. The modern theoretical calculations available for neutrino-mass experiments agree with spectroscopic data. Moreover, when neutrino-mass experiments performed in the 1980s with gaseous tritium are re-evaluated using these modern calculations, the extracted neutrino mass-squared values are co…
Beta-delayed proton emission from the neutron halo ground state of $^{11}$Be raised much attention due to the unusually high decay rate. It was argued that this may be due to the existence of a resonance just above the proton decay threshold. In this Letter, we use the lenses of real-energy continuum shell model to describe several observables including the Gamow-Teller rates for the $β^-$-delayed $α$ and proton decays, and argue that, within our model, the large $β^-{\rm p}$ branching ratio cannot be reconciled with other data.
We review progress in studying two central problems in Nuclear Astrophysics: The \be7pg reaction is one of the major source of uncertainties in estimating the \b8 solar neutrino flux and is critical for the Solar Neutrino Problem. We discuss a newly emerging method to extract this cross section from the Coulomb dissociation of the radioactive beam of \b8. The Coulomb dissociation appears to provide a viable alternative method for measuring the \be7pg reaction rate. Several attempts to constrain the p-wave S-factor of the \c12ag reaction at Helium burning temperatures (200 MK) using the beta-de…
We argue that conclusions of [PRL 123, 082501 (2019)] are incorrect. The authors present the direct observation of beta-delayed proton emission in the beta decay of 11Be. From the determined branching ratio for this process and from the energy spectrum of emitted protons the existence of a so far unobserved narrow resonance in 11Be was deduced. The given beta strength for the transition to this state is however wrong. In addition, we show that the combination of peak position and branching ratio is in strong disagreement with models considered by the authors. Furthermore, we identify several d…
In this work, the large-scale shell-model calculations for $β$-decay properties have been done. The $β$-delayed $γ$-ray spectroscopy has been performed recently at ILL, Grenoble [M. Si \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. C {\bf 106}, 014302 (2022)] to study $β$-decay properties corresponding to $^{137}$Te (($7/2^-))$ $\rightarrow$ $^{137}$I ($J_f$) transitions. We have done a systematic shell-model study for nuclear structure properties and compared the obtained results with the experimental data. Finally, the $β$-decay properties such as the $\log ft$ values and average shape factors have been report…
We calculate the rate of the rare decay $^{11}\text{Be}$ into $^{10}\text{Be} + p +e^- + \barν_e$ using Halo effective field theory, thereby describing the process of beta-delayed proton emission. We assume a shallow $1/2^+$ resonance in the $^{10}\text{Be}-p$ system with an energy consistent with a recent experiment by Ayyad et al. and obtain $b_p = 4.9_{-2.9}^{+5.6}\text{(exp.)}_{-0.8}^{+4.0}\text{(theo.)} \times 10^{-6}$ for the branching ratio of this decay, predicting a resonance width of $Γ_R = (9.0^{+4.8}_{-3.3}\text{(exp.)}^{+5.3}_{-2.2}\text{(theo.)})~\text{keV}$. Our calculation show…
Beta-decay properties of neutron-rich Ca, Ti, and Cr isotopes are studied within a deformed proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation. The underlying mean field is described self-consistently from deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock calculations with pairing correlations. Residual spin-isospin interactions in the particle-hole and particle-particle channels are also included in the formalism. The energy distributions of the Gamow-Teller strength, the beta-decay feedings, the beta-decay half-lives, and the beta-delayed neutron emission probabilities are discussed and compared with other …
In this paper, beta-decay properties of even-even neutron-rich isotopes in the rare-earth mass region are studied within a microscopic theoretical approach based on a proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation. The underlying mean field is constructed selfconsistently from a deformed Hartree-Fock calculation with Skyrme interactions and pairing correlations to which particle-hole and particle-particle residual interactions are added. Nuclei in this mass region participate in the astrophysical rapid neutron capture process and are directly involved in the generation of the rare-ear…

Single-particle level diagrams and other quantities are also prese…
R-process nucleosynthesis models rely, by necessity, on nuclear structure models for input. Particularly important are beta-decay half-lives of neutron rich nuclei. At present only a single systematic calculation exists that provides values for all relevant nuclei making it difficult to test the sensitivity of nucleosynthesis models to this input. Additionally, even though there are indications that their contribution may be significant, the impact of first-forbidden transitions on decay rates has not been systematically studied within a consistent model. We use a fully self-consistent covaria…
The beta decay process of the 11Li halo nucleus into 9Li and d is studied in a three-body model. The 11Li nucleus is described as a 9Li+n+n system in hyperspherical coordinates on a Lagrange mesh. Various 9Li+d potentials are compared involving a forbidden state, a physical bound state, and a resonance near 0.25 MeV in the s-wave. With an added surface absorption, they are compatible with elastic scattering data. The transition probability per time unit is quite sensitive to the location of the resonance. For a fixed resonance location, it does not depend much on the potential choice at varian…
We evaluate the impact of using sets of fission yields given by the GEF code for spontaneous (sf), neutron-induced ((n,f)), and beta-delayed (betadf) fission processes which take into account the approximate initial excitation energy of the fissioning compound nucleus. We further explore energy-dependent fission dynamics in the r process by considering the sensitivity of our results to the treatment of the energy sharing and de-excitation of the fission fragments using the FREYA code. We show that the asymmetric-to-symmetric yield trends predicted by GEF can reproduce the high-mass edge of the…

The underlying mean field is described self-consistently from deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock calculations with pairing correlations. Residual separable particle-hole and particle-particle forces are also included in the formalism. Nuclear matrix elements of the neutrinoless double beta decays of 96Zr, 100Mo, 116Cd, 128Te, 130Te and 136Xe are calculated for the light-neutrino exchange mechanism by using the proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pnQRPA) with a realistic nucleon-nucleon force. The g_pp parameter of the pnQRPA is fixed by the data on the two-neutrino double beta decays and single beta decays. The finite size of a nucleon, the higher-order terms of nucleonic weak currents, and the nucleon-nucleon short-range correlations (s.r.c) are taken into account. The s.r.c. are computed by the tradit…
Beta-delayed proton emission may occur at very low rates in the decays of the light nuclei $^{11}$Be and $^8$B. This paper explores the potential physical significance of such decays, estimates their rates and reports on first attempts to detect them: an experiment at ISOLDE/CERN gives a branching ratio for $^{11}$Be of $(2.5 \pm 2.5) \cdot 10^{-6}$ and an experiment at JYFL a 95% confidence upper limit of $2.6 \cdot 10^{-5}$ for $^8$B.
The creation of transuranium nuclides under pulsed neutron fluxes of thermonuclear explosions is investigated within the kinetic model of the astrophysical r process, taking into account the time dependence of the external parameters and the processes accompanying the beta decay of neutron-rich nuclei. Time-dependent neutron fluxes in the interval ~ 10e-6 s were modeled within the framework of the developed adiabatic binary model. The probabilities of beta-delayed processes were calculated on the base of the microscopic theory of finite Fermi systems. Calculations of transuranium nuclides yiel…
Current models for the $r$ process are summarized with an emphasis on the key constraints from both nuclear physics measurements and astronomical observations. In particular, we analyze the importance of nuclear physics input such as beta-decay rates; nuclear masses; neutron-capture cross sections; beta-delayed neutron emission; probability of spontaneous fission, beta- and neutron-induced fission, fission fragment mass distributions; neutrino-induced reaction cross sections, etc. We highlight the effects on models for $r$-process nucleosynthesis of newly measured $β$-decay half-lives, masses,…
The spherical QRPA method is used for the calculations of the $β$-decay properties of the neutron-rich nuclei in the region near the neutron magic numbers N=82 and N=126 which are important for determination of the r-process path. Our calculations differ from previous works by the use of realistic forces for the proton-neutron interaction. Both the allowed and first-forbidden $β$-decays are included. Detailed comparisons with the experimental measurements and the previous shell-model calculations are performed. The results for half-lives and beta-delayed neutron emission probabilities will ser…
The nuclear matrix elements $M^{0ν}$ of the neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$) of most nuclei with known $2νββ$-decay rates are systematically evaluated using the Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA) and Renormalized QRPA (RQRPA). The experimental $2νββ$-decay rate is used to adjust the most relevant parameter, the strength of the particle-particle interaction. New results confirm that with such procedure the $M^{0ν}$ values become essentially independent on the size of the single-particle basis. Furthermore, the matrix elements are shown to be also rather stable with respect t…
