Microscopic calculation of inelastic proton scattering off $^{18}$O, $^{10}$Be, $^{12}$Be, and $^{16}$C for study of neutron excitation in neutron-rich nuclei
The microscopic coupled-channel calculation of inelastic proton scattering is performed for the study of neutron excitations in $2^+_1$ states of $^{18}$O, $^{10}$Be, $^{12}$Be, and $^{16}$C. Proton-nucleus potentials in the coupled-channel calculation are microscopically derived by folding the Melbourne $g$-matrix $NN$ interaction with matter and transition densities of target nuclei obtained by the structure model calculation of antisymmetrized molecular dynamics. The calculated result reasonably reproduces the elastic and inelastic proton scattering cross sections, and supports the dominant contribution of neutron in the $2^+_1$ excitation of $^{12}$Be and $^{16}$C as well as $^{18}$O. Sensitivity of the inelastic scattering cross sections to the neutron transition density is discussed. The exotic feature of the neutron transition density with the amplitude in the outer region in $^{12}$Be and $^{16}$C is focused.
The $α$ inelastic scattering on $^{16}$O is investigated with the coupled-channel calculation using the $α$-nucleus coupled-channel potentials, which are microscopically derived by folding the the Melbourne $g$-matrix $NN$ interaction with the $^{16}$O and $α$ densities. The matter and transition densities of $^{16}$O are calculated by a microscopic structure model of the variation after the spin-parity projections combined with the generator coordinate method of $^{12}$C+$α$ in the framework of the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics. The calculation reproduces the observed elastic and inelast…
In order to test the $^{16}$C internal wave function, we perform microscopic coupled-channels (MCC) calculations of the $^{16}$C($0_1^+ \to 2_1^+$) inelastic scattering by $^{208}$Pb target at $E/A$=52.7 MeV using the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) wave functions of $^{16}$C, and compare the calculated differential cross sections with the measured ones. The MCC calculations with AMD wave functions reproduce the experimental data fairly well, although they slightly underestimate the magnitude of the cross sections. The absolute magnitude of calculated differential cross sections is fo…
The inclusive pion double charge exchange process on nuclei is considered in the framework of the Gribov-Glauber approach. It is shown that inelastic rescatterings related to production of two (and more) pions in the intermediate state give an important contribution to the process of double charge exchange at kinetic energies above ~ 0.5 GeV. This mechanism dominates at energies greater or about 1 GeV and allows to explain the weak energy dependence of the double charge exchange cross section observed experimentally.
In the density distribution of a deformed target-nucleus, the spherical $λ= 0$ and the deformed $λ= 2$ parts were considered. On this basis, the corresponding potential parts $U_0$ and $U^{(2)}_{int}$ of a double -folding microscopic nucleus-nucleus optical potential are obtained. Then, for these potentials and by using the coupled-channel technique (ECIS), the elastic and inelastic amplitudes are calculated for $^{17}O$ heavy ion scattering on $2^{+}$ collective excited state of various target nuclei. Besides, the same cross-sections are calculated in the frame of an adiabatic approach of the…
Information on the equation of state (EOS) of neutron matter may be gained from studies of 208Pb. Descriptions of 208Pb require credible models of structure, taking particular note also of the spectrum. Such may be tested by analyses of scattering data. Herein, we report on such analyses using an RPA model for 208Pb in a folding model of the scattering. No a posteriori adjustment of parameters are needed to obtain excellent agreement with data. From those analyses, the skin thickness of 208Pb is constrained to lie in the range 0.13-0.17 fm.
We study inelastic neutrino scattering off hot nuclei for temperatures relevant under supernova conditions. The method we use is based on the quasiparticle random phase approximation extended to finite temperatures within the thermo field dynamics (TQRPA). The method allows a transparent treatment of upward and downward transitions in hot nuclei, avoiding the application of Brink's hypothesis. For the sample nuclei $^{56}$Fe and $^{82}$Ge we perform a detailed analysis of thermal effects on the strength distributions of allowed Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions which dominate the scattering proces…
The proton inelastic scattering of $^{24}$O($p,p'$) at 62 MeV/nucleon is described by a self-consistent microscopic calculation with the continuum particle-vibration coupling (cPVC) method. The SLy5, SkM*, and SGII parameters are adopted as an effective nucleon-nucleon interaction. For all the parameters, the cPVC calculation reproduces very well the first peak at 4.65 MeV in the $^{24}$O excitation energy spectrum as well as its angular distribution. The role of the cPVC self-energy strongly depends on the effective interactions. The higher-lying strength around 7.3 MeV is suggested to be a s…
The structure of the light proton and neutron rich nuclei is studied in a microscopic multicluster model using the stochastic variational method. This approach enables us to describe the weakly bound nature of these nuclei in a consistent way. Applications for various nuclei $^{6-9}$Li, $^7$Be, $^8$B, $^9$C, $^{9-10}$Be, $^{9-10}$B presented. The paper discusses the relation of this model to other models as well as the possible extension for p and sd shell nuclei.
A theory of nucleus-nucleus collisions has been developed for kinetic energies substantially in excess of the binding energy. The very high pressure produced in the compound system as a result of the fusion of the two colliding nuclei is the reason for the subsequent hydrodynamic expansion of the nuclear medium. The energy and angular distributions of the reaction products are investigated. The charge distribution is also determined in the case where the nucleon and ion components of the reaction products are predominant. A solution is found for the expansion into vacuum of a sphere in which t…
Electron scattering is a tool that can provide relatively clean view of the nuclear structure in both ground and excited states, as it depends on the well-known electromagnetic interaction. But since the common expressions for its cross section were derived with certain assumptions, in this paper we describe several nontrivial steps necessary for a proper theoretical calculation within the current density-functional framework, namely with Skyrme QRPA for axial nuclei, with aim to enable comparison of the theoretically predicted low-lying $1^-$ toroidal modes with future (e,e') experiments.
The microscopic approach of fission rates and neutron emission rates in compound nuclei have been applied to $^{258}$No and $^{286}$Cn. The microscopic framework is based on the finite-temperature Skyrme-Hartree-Fock+BCS calculations, in which the fission barriers and mass parameters are self-consistently temperature dependent. The fission rates from low to high temperatures can be obtained based on the imaginary free energy method. The neutron emission rates are obtained with neutron gases at surfaces. Finally the survival probabilities of superheavy nuclei can be calculated microscopically. …

The Topical Review `The Future of Nuclear Structure' aims at summarizing the current state-of-the-art microscopic calculations in Nuclear Theory and to give a useful reference for young researches who wish to learn more about this exciting discipline.
Background: The triaxial and hexadecapole deformations of the K=0+ and K=2+ bands of 24Mg have been investigated by the inelastic scatterings of various probes, including electrons, protons, and alpha particles, for a prolonged time. However, it has been challenging to explain the unique properties of the scatterings observed for the $4^+_1$ state through reaction calculations. Purpose: To investigate the structure and transition properties of the K=0+ and K=2+ bands of 24Mg employing the microscopic structure and reaction calculations via inelastic proton and alpha-scattering. Particularly, t…
We review recent developments in the study of deep inelastic scattering from light nuclei, focusing in particular on deuterium, helium, and lithium. Understanding the nuclear effects in these systems is essential for the extraction of information on the neutron structure function.
The elastic and inelastic proton scattering on $^{18,20,22}$O nuclei are studied in a folding model formalism of nucleon-nucleus optical potential and inelastic form factor. The DDM3Y effective interaction is used and the ground state densities are obtained in continuum Skyrme-HFB approach. A semi-microscopic approach of collective form factors is done to extract the deformation parameters from inelastic scattering analysis while the microscopic approach uses the continuum QRPA form factors. Implications of the values of the deformation parameters, neutron and proton transition moments for the…
We study nuclear effect in the $F^A_3(x)$ structure function in the deep inelastic neutrino reactions on iron by taking into account Fermi motion, binding, target mass correction, shadowing and anti-shadowing corrections. Calculations have been done in a local density approximation using relativistic nuclear spectral functions which include nucleon correlations for nuclear matter. Results for $F^A_3(x)$ have been compared with the results reported at NuTeV and also with some of the older experiments reported in the literature.
We systematically derive a length scale characterizing the size of a low-lying, beta stable nucleus from empirical data for the diffraction peak angle in the proton inelastic differential cross section of incident energy of \sim 1 GeV. In doing so, we assume that the target nucleus in the ground state is a completely absorptive "black" sphere of radius a. The cross section πa^2, where a is determined in such a way as to reproduce the empirical proton diffraction peak angle in the elastic channel, is known to agree with empirical total reaction cross sections for incident protons to within erro…
The basic version of the semi-microscopic particle-hole dispersive optical model is implemented to describe main properties of the Gamow-Teller and charge-exchange giant spin-monopole resonances in medium-heavy closed-shell parent nuclei. Calculation results obtained for $^{48}Ca$, $^{90}Zr$, $^{132}Sn$, and $^{208}Pb$ are compared with available experimental data.
γ-softness in atomic nuclei is investigated in the framework of energy density functionals. By mapping constrained microscopic energy surfaces for a set of representative non-axial medium-heavy and heavy nuclei to a Hamiltonian of the proton-neutron interacting boson model (IBM-2) containing up to three-body interactions, low-lying collective spectra and transition rates are calculated. Observables are analyzed that distinguish between the two limiting geometrical pictures of non-axial nuclei: the rigid-triaxial rotor and the γ-unstable rotor. It is shown that neither of these pictures is real…
Recent calculations of the effects of hadronization and final state interaction (FSI) in semi-exclusive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) $A(e,e'(A-1))X$ processes are reviewed. The basic ingredient underlying these calculations, {\it viz} the time-dependent effective debris-nucleon cross section is illustrated, and some relevant results on complex nuclei and the deuteron are presented. In the latter case, particular attention is paid to the choice of the kinematics, for such a choice would in principle allow one to investigate both the structure function of a bound nucleon as well as the hadron…
For a better understanding of the dynamics of exotic nuclei it is of crucial importance to develop a practical microscopic theory easy to be applied to a wide range of masses. Theoretically the basic task consists in formulating an easy solvable theory able to reproduce structures and transitions of known nuclei which should be then used to calculate the sparely known properties of proton- or neutron-rich nuclei. In this paper we start by calculating energies and distributions of A\leq4 nuclei withing a unitary correlation model restricted to include only two-body correlations. The structure o…
The effect of inelastic excitation of exotic light projectiles (proton- as well as neutron-rich) $^{17}$F and $^{11}$Be on fusion with heavy target has been studied at near-barrier energies. The calculations have been performed in the coupled channels approach where, in addition to the normal coupling of the ground state of the projectile to the continuum, inelastic excitation of the projectile to the bound excited state and its coupling to the continuum have also been taken into consideration. The inclusion of these additional couplings has been found to have significant effect on the fusion …
We have carried out a unified microscopic study of electric monopole, quadrupole and magnetic dipole excitations in fast rotating nuclei undergoing backbending, with special attention at the magnetic excitations. We found, among other results, that the strength of the orbital magnetic dipole excitations (scissors mode) gets enhanced by more than a factor four at high rotational frequency, above the backbending region. We provide a physical explanation for such an enhancement.
The nuclear enhancement observed in inelastic photoproduction of $J/Ψ$ should not be interpreted as evidence for an increased gluon density in nuclei. The nuclear suppression of the production rate due to initial and final state interactions is calculated and a novel two-step color exchange process is proposed, which is able to explain the data.
A microscopic and consistent description of both nuclear structure and reactions is instrumental to extend the predictivity of models calculating scattering observables. In particular, this is crucial in the case of exotic nuclei not yet discovered. In this manuscript, we will present the plan of the Lund effort for a symmetry breaking description of bound and scattering observables using a generator coordinate method model based on an effective Hamiltonian constrained with a (Skyrme) functional. Following this, we will illustrate the steps to construct an optical potential for deformed nuclei…
The process of alpha disintegration has been studied theoretically in the framework of a microscopic superasymmetric fission model (MSAFM). The nuclear interaction potential required for the alpha decay process has been calculated by folding in the density distribution functions of the alpha nucleus and the daughter nucleus with a realistic effective interaction. The nuclear microscopic alpha-nucleus potential thus obtained has been used along with the Coulomb interaction potential to calculate the action integral within the WKB approximation. This subsequently results in a parameter free calc…
Correlation between B($E1, 1^-_1 \to 0^+_{g.s.}$) and B($E1, 3^-_1 \to 2^+_{1}$) values are considered within microscopic QRPA approach. General arguments for a dependence of a ratio between these values on a collectivity of the $2^+_1$ and $3^-_1$ phonons and ground state correlations are provided.
Differential cross sections and analyzing powers for elastic scattering from, and for inelastic proton scattering to a set of $2^+_1$ states in, ${}^{12}$C, ${}^{20}$Ne, ${}^{24}$Mg, ${}^{28}$Si and ${}^{40}$Ca, and for a set of energies between 35 to 250 MeV, have been analyzed. A $g$-folding model has been used to determine optical potentials and a microscopic distorted wave approximation taken to analyze the inelastic data. The effective nucleon-nucleon interactions used to specify the optical potentials have also been used as the transition operators in the inelastic scattering processes. …
Half-lives of beta+ decay and electron capture are studied in some selected superheavy nuclei produced in hot fusion reactions, namely, 290Fl, 293Mc, 294Lv, and 295Ts. The nuclear structure is described microscopically from deformed self-consistent Skyrme Hartree-Fock mean-field calculations that include pairing correlations. The sensitivity of the half-lives to deformation and to the QEC energies, which are still not determined experimentally, are studied. The results are compared with phenomenological alpha-decay half-lives, showing that the latter decay mode is dominant in this mass region.
Starting from successful self-consistent mean-field models, this paper discusses why and how to go beyond the mean field approximation. To include long-range correlations from fluctuations in collective degrees of freedom, one has to consider symmetry restoration and configuration mixing, which give access to ground-state correlations and spectroscopy.
Total Ordinary Muon Capture (OMC) rates are calculated on the basis of the Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation for several spherical nuclei from 90^Zr to 208^Pb. It is shown that total OMC rates calculated with the free value of the axial-vector coupling constant g_A agree well with the experimental data for medium-size nuclei and exceed considerably the experimental rates for heavy nuclei. The sensitivity of theoretical OMC rates to the nuclear residual interactions is discussed.
We investigate the use of elastic and inelastic scatterings with secondary beams of radioactive nuclei as a mean to obtain information on ground state properties and transition matrix elements to continuum states. An eikonal model is developed for this purpose by using the folding potential. In particular we discuss possible signatures of halo wavefunctions in elastic and inelastic scattering experiments.
Radiative capture reactions for low energy protons have been theoretically studied for Ni and Cu isotopes using the microscopic optical model. The optical potential has been obtained in the folding model using different microscopic interactions with the nuclear densities from Relativistic Mean Field calculations. The calculated total cross sections as well as the cross sections for individually low lying levels have been compared with measurements involving stable nuclear targets. Rates for the rapid proton capture process have been evaluated for astrophysically important reactions.
The yrast states of nuclei that are spherical or weakly deformed in their ground states are described as quadrupole waves running over the nuclear surface, which we call "tidal waves". The energies and E2 transition probabilities of the yrast states in nuclides with $Z$= 44, 46, 48 and $N=56, ~58,..., 66$ are calculated by means of the cranking model in a microscopic way. The nonlinear response of the nucleonic orbitals results in a strong coupling between shape and single particle degrees of freedom.
A microscopic formalism for describing observed cross sections for deuteron breakup by three-nucleon nuclei was developed on the basis of the diffraction nuclear model. A general formula that describes the amplitude for the reaction d+3He->3He+p+n and which involves only one adjustable parameter was obtained by using expansions of the integrands involved in terms of a Gaussian basis. This formula was used to analyze experimental data on the exclusive cross sections for deuteron breakup by He-3 nuclei at the projectile energy of 89.4 MeV. The importance of employing, in calculations, a deuteron…
A covariant formulation of spin-dependent deep-inelastic scattering from nuclei is presented. In the relativistic impulse approximation the inclusive nuclear cross section is described in terms of the amplitude for forward, virtual-photon scattering from an off-mass-shell nucleon. The general structure of the off-shell nucleon hadronic tensor is derived, and the leading behavior of the off-shell nucleon structure functions computed in the Bjorken limit. The formalism, which is valid for nucleons bound inside nuclei with spin 1/2 or 1, is applied to the case of the deuteron.
The Bloom-Gilman local duality of the inelastic structure function of the proton, the deuteron and light complex nuclei is investigated using available experimental data in the squared four-momentum transfer range from 0.3 to 5 (GeV/c)**2. The results of our analysis suggest that the onset of the Bloom-Gilman local duality is anticipated in complex nuclei with respect to the case of the protonand the deuteron. A possible interpretation of this result in terms of a rescaling effect is discussed with particular emphasis to the possibility of reproducing the damping of the nucleon-resonance trans…
One of the most striking findings in the recent high-spin spectroscopy is the discovery of one-phonon, and possibly double-phonon, excitation of the nuclear wobbling rotational bands. In this talk, we first review the properties of observed wobbling motions, and discuss the failure and success of the possible interpretation in terms of the simple rotor model. Then, we further present results of our microscopic study in Hf and Lu nuclei by means of the theoretical framework, the cranked mean-field and the random phase approximation.
The (semi-)microscopic double-folding nucleus-nucleus optical potentials are suggested for consideration of inelastic scattering with excitation of collective nuclear states by using the adiabatic approach and the elastic scattering amplitude in the high-energy approximation. The analytical expression for inelastic scattering amplitude is obtained keeping the first order terms in the deformation parameter of a potential. Calculations of inelastic cross sections for the $^{17}$O heavy ions scattered on different nuclei at about hundred Mev/nucleon are made, and the acceptable qualitative agreem…
The generalized density matrix (GDM) method is used to calculate microscopically the parameters of the collective Hamiltonian. Higher order anharmonicities are obtained consistently with the lowest order results, the mean field [Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) equation] and the harmonic potential [quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA)]. The method is applied to soft spherical nuclei, where the anharmonicities are essential for restoring the stability of the system, as the harmonic potential becomes small or negative. The approach is tested in three models of increasing complexity: the …
Systematic calculations of ground-state spin and parity of odd-mass nuclei have been performed within the Hartree--Fock--BCS (HFBCS) approach and the Finite-Range Droplet Model for nuclei for which experimental data are available. The unpaired nucleon has been treated perturbatively, and axial and left-right reflection symmetries have been assumed. As for the HFBCS approach, three different Skyrme forces have been used in the particle-hole channel, whereas the particle-particle matrix elements have been approximated by a seniority force. The calculations have been done for the 621 nuclei for w…
Developed earlier concept of quasielastic knock out of pions from nucleons by high-energy electrons is propounded as a tool for checking microscopical model ($^3P_0$ - fluctuation) for decay of N to different channels $π+B$ and Preparata model of nucleus structure.
I develop a microscopic three-cluster model for exotic light nuclei. I use the hyperspherical formalism, associated with the Generator Coordinate Method. This model is well adapted to halo nuclei, since the long-range part of the radial wave functions is accurately reproduced. The core wave functions are described in the shell model, including excited states. This technique provides large bases, expressed in terms of projected Slater determinants. Matrix elements involve seven-dimension integrals, and therefore require long calculation times. I apply the model to 11Li, 14Be, 15B, and 17N descr…
Accurate estimates of the binding energy of nuclei far from stability that cannot be produced in the laboratory are crucial to our understanding of nuclear processes in astrophysical scenarios. Models based on energy density functionals have shown that they are capable of reproducing all known masses with root-mean-square error better than 800 keV, while retaining a firm microscopic foundation. However, it was recently pointed out in [M. Hukkanen et al., arXiv:2210.10674] that the recent BSkG1 model fails to account for a contribution to the binding energy that is specific to odd-odd nuclei, a…
The neutron emission rates in thermal excited nuclei are conventionally described by statistical models with a phenomenological level density parameter that depends on excitation energies, deformations and mass regions. In the microscopic view of hot nuclei, the neutron emission rates can be determined by the external neutron gas densities without any free parameters. Therefore the microscopic description of thermal neutron emissions is desirable that can impact several understandings such as survival probabilities of superheavy compound nuclei and neutron emissivity in reactors. To describe t…
As the result of synthesis of nuclei with large proton numbers a new region of investigations of the structure of nuclei has been discovered. Due to the recent significant increase in the yield of superheavy nuclei their gamma-spectroscopic studies became possible. The purpose of paper is to predict the excitation energies of the $2^+_1$ states of nuclei with Z$\ge 100$ using the microscopic variant of the Grodzins relation derived based on the geometrical collective model. The excitation energies of the $2^+_1$ states of the even-even nuclei from $^{256}$Fm to $^{296}_{120}$X which differ fro…
On the base of potential theory of light nuclei cluster photodisintegration the characteristics of Lithium nuclei cluster photodisintegration reactions are considered in the range of low and intermediate energies. For the inverse reaction the interference has an opposite character: in forward semisphere it is deconstructive, and in backward semisphere it is constructive. In the energy range above several MeV the E2-multipole becomes dominating. The effect of appearance of the node structure of the wave function of relative motion has been considered in the characteristics of Li cluster photodi…
We have made a thorough investigation of the nuclear structure function W_2A in the region of 0.8 < x < 1.5 and Q^2 < 20 GeV^2, separating the quasielastic and inelastic plus deep inelastic contributions. The agreement with present experimental data is good giving support to the results for both channels. Predictions are made in yet unexplored regions of x and Q^2 to assert the weight of the quasielastic or inelastic channels. We find that at Q^2 < 4 GeV^2 the structure function is dominated by the quasielastic contributions for x < 1.5, while for values of Q^2 > 15 GeV^2 and the range of x st…
The concept of fission barrier - a parameter which enters in quantitative estimates of various observables related to nuclear fission - is presented from the point of view of theory based on the picture of nuclear deformation and energy dependent on it. We describe the macroscopic-microscopic method of calculating energy landscapes which is simpler than the selfconsistent mean field approach, and, due to its two-component nature, seems to be easier to adjust to experimental data. We present some models and methods used to find the fission saddles. For the purpose of illustration, we present re…
In two previous papers, the Kerman-Klein-Donau-Frauendorf (KKDF) model was used to study rotational bands of odd deformed nuclei. Here we describe backbending for odd nuclei using the same model. The backbending in the neighboring even nuclei is described by a phenomenological two band model, and this core is then coupled to a large single-particle space, as in our previous work. The results obtained for energies and M1 transition rates are compared with experimental data for 165Lu and for energies alone to the experimental data for 179W. For the case of 165Lu comparison is also made with prev…
We investigate resonances in light halo nuclei using a fully microscopic cluster model and the complex scaling method. We make use of the hermitian representation of the complex scaling method. The general structure of the cluster model is that of a correlation operator acting on a starting function that describes a number of neutrons relative to an alpha-particle. The correlation operator is expanded in terms of a small non-orthogonal set of Gaussian basis states and we make use of a simplified, central but state-dependent, interaction. The many-body integrals required for the computation are…
We propose simple Monte Carlo method for calculating parton distribution in nuclei. The EMC effect is automatically included by means of two parameters, which characterize the change of nuclear pion field. Good agreement with experimental data in the broad range of variable x is obtained.
[Background] Predictions of spectroscopic properties of low-lying states are critical for nuclear structure studies. Theoretical methods can be particularly involved for odd-mass nuclei because of the interplay between the unpaired nucleon and collective degrees of freedom. Only a few models have been developed for systems in which octupole collective degrees of freedom play a role. [Purpose] We aim to predict spectroscopic properties of odd-mass nuclei characterized by octupole shape deformation, employing a model that describes single-particle and collective degrees of freedom within the sam…
Two systematic sources of error in most current microscopic evaluations of fission-barrier heights are studied. They are concerned with an approximate treatment of the Coulomb exchange terms (known as the Slater approximation) in the self-consistent mean fields and the projection on good parity states (e.g., of positive parity for the spontaneous fission of an even-even nucleus) of left-right reflection asymmetric intrinsic solutions (e.g., around the second barrier). Approximate or unprojected solutions are shown to lead each to an underestimation of the barrier heights by a few hundred keV.
