Synchrotron-based x-ray reflectivity is increasingly employed as an \textit{in situ} probe of surface morphology during thin film growth, but complete interpretation of the results requires modeling the growth process. Many models have been developed and employed for this purpose, yet no detailed, comparative studies of their scope and accuracy exists in the literature. Using experimental data obtained from hyperthermal deposition of pentane and diindenoperylene (DIP) on SiO$_2$, we compare and contrast three such models, both with each other and with detailed characterization of the surface morphology using ex-situ atomic force microscopy (AFM). These two systems each exhibit particular phenomena of broader interest: pentacene/SiO$_2$ exhibits a rapid transition from rough to smooth growth. DIP/SiO$_2$, under the conditions employed here, exhibits growth rate acceleration due to a different sticking probability between the substrate and film. In general, \textit{independent of which model is used}, we find good agreement between the surface morphology obtained from fits to the \insitu x-ray data with the actual morphology at early times. This agreement deteriorates at later time, once the root-mean squared (rms) film roughness exceeds about 1 ML. A second observation is that, because layer coverages are under-determined by the evolution of a single point on the reflectivity curve, we find that the best fits to reflectivity data --- corresponding to the lowest values of $χ_ν^2$ --- do not necessarily yield the best agreement between simulated and measured surface morphologies. Instead, it appears critical that the model reproduce all local extrema in the data. In addition to showing that layer morphologies can be extracted from a minimal set of data, the methodology established here provides a basis for improving models of multilayer growth by comparison to real systems.
We present the frequency-dependant (dynamic) dielectric response of a group of topical polycrystalline zeolitic imidazolate-based metal-organic framework (MOF) materials in the extended infrared spectral region. Using synchrotron-based FTIR spectroscopy in specular reflectance, in conjunction with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we have revealed detailed structure-property trends linking the THz region dielectric response to framework porosity and structural density. The work demonstrates that MOFs are promising candidate materials not only for low-\k{appa} electronics applicatio…
During layer-by-layer homoepitaxial growth, both the Reflection High-Energy Electron Diffraction (RHEED) intensity and the x-ray reflection intensity will oscillate, and each complete oscillation indicates the addition of one monolayer of material. However, it is well documented, but not well understood, that the phase of the RHEED oscillations is not constant and thus the maxima in the RHEED intensity oscillations do not necessarily occur at the completion of a layer. We demonstrate this using simultaneous in situ x-ray reflectivity and RHEED during layer-by-layer growth of SrTiO$_3$. We show…
We study the growth of the Fe films on GaAs(100) at a low temperature, 140 K, by $in$-$situ$ UHV x-ray reflectivity using synchrotron radiation. We find rough surface with the growth exponent, $β_S$ = 0.51$\pm$0.04. This indicates that the growth of the Fe film proceeds via the restrictive relaxation due to insufficient thermal diffusion of the adatoms. The XRR curves are nicely fit by a model with a uniform Fe film, implying that the surface segregation and interface alloying of both Ga and As are negligible. When the Fe film is annealed to 300 K, however, the corresponding XRR can be fit onl…
Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy has been utilized during high rate E-beam evaporation/deposition of YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO). The results demonstrate the great utility of FTIR as an in situ monitor of YBCO deposition and processing. We detect different (amorphous/fine polycrystalline) insulating pre-existing phases to the high Tc superconducting phase which appear to have distinct reflectivity fingerprints dominated by thin film interference effects, as a function of temperature and oxygen pressure. These fingerprints reveal some of the kinetic and thermodynamic pathways during the grow…
We elucidate the crystalline nature and the three-dimensional orientation of isolated organic nanocrystals embedded in a sol-gel matrix, using a polarized nonlinear microscopy technique that combines two-photon fluorescence and second harmonic generation. This technique allows the distinction between mono-crystalline structures and nano-scale poly-crystalline aggregates responsible for incoherent second harmonic signals.
Improvement of the photovoltaic efficiency (from 1.2% to 3%) via exposure of organic poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) + phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) devices to solvent vapor at room temperature is reported. In situ photoluminescence (PL) and Raman spectroscopies, in conjunction with optical absorption data, have been used to provide insight into the nanoscale morphological changes occurring during solvent vapor annealing. We found that in P3HT:PCBM, suppression of PL and the decrease in line-width of the 1442 cm-1 P3HT Raman peak are accompanied by strong modifications in the optic…
We describe and demonstrate a new technique for parallel collection of x-ray reflectivity data, compatible with monochromatic synchrotron radiation and flat substrates, and apply it to the in-situ observation of thin-film growth. The method employs a polycapillary x-ray optic to produce a converging fan of radiation incident onto a sample surface, and an area detector to simultaneously collect the XRR signal over an angular range matching that of the incident fan. Factors determining the range and instrumental resolution of the technique in reciprocal space, in addition to the signal-to-backgr…
We present a comparative study of the growth of the technologically highly relevant gate dielectric and encapsulation material aluminum oxide in inorganic and also organic heterostructures. Atomic force microscopy studies indicate strong similarities in the surface morphology of aluminum oxide films grown on these chemically different substrates. In addition, from X-ray reflectivity measurements we extract the roughness exponent βof aluminum oxide growth on both substrates. By renormalising the aluminum oxide roughness by the roughness of the underlying organic film we find good agreement with…
The conductivity of organic semiconductors is measured {\it in-situ} and continuously with a bottom contact configuration, as a function of film thickness at various gate voltages. The depletion layer thickness can be directly determined as a shift of the threshold thickness at which electric current began to flow. The {\it in-situ} and continuous measurement can also determine qualitatively the accumulation layer thickness together with the distribution function of injected carriers. The accumulation layer thickness is a few mono layers, and it does not depend on gate voltages, rather depends…
This article is withdrawn since it is published in a journal We report on the first reduction methodology, compatible with flexible, temperature sensitive substrates, for the production of reduced spin coated graphene oxide (GO) electrodes. It is based on the use of a laser beam for the in-situ, non-thermal, reduction of spin coated GO films on flexible substrates over a large area. The photoreduction process is one-step, facile and is rapidly carried out at room temperature in air without affecting the integrity of the graphene lattice as well as the flexibility of the underlying substrate. C…
We report the successful fabrication of lateral organic spin valves with a channel length in the sub $100\,nm$ regime. The fabication process is based on in-situ shadow evaporation under UHV conditions and therefore yields clean and oxygen-free interfaces between the ferromagnetic metallic electrodes and the organic semiconductor. The spin valve devices consist of Nickel and Cobalt-iron electrodes and the high mobility \emph{n}-type organic semiconductor $N,N'$-bis(heptafluorobutyl)-$3,4:9,10$-perylene diimide. Our studies comprise fundamental investigations of the process' and materials' suit…
Metal--organic frameworks (MOFs) are a family of chemically diverse materials, with applications in a wide range of fields covering engineering, physics, chemistry, biology and medicine. Research so far has focused almost entirely on crystalline structures, yet a clear trend has emerged shifting the emphasis onto disordered states of MOFs, including "defective by design" crystals, as well as amorphous phases such as glasses and gels. Here we introduce a MOF liquid, a strongly associated liquid obtained by melting a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF), with retention of chemical configuration,…
Understanding of the complex mechanical behavior of metal-organic frameworks (MOF) beyond their elastic limit will allow the design of real-world applications in chemical engineering, optoelectronics, energy conversion apparatus, and sensing devices. Through in situ compression of micropillars, the uniaxial stress-strain curves of a copper paddlewheel MOF (HKUST-1) were determined along two unique crystallographic directions, namely the (100) and (111) facets. We show strongly anisotropic elastic response where the ratio of the Young's moduli are E(111) ~ 3.6 x E(100), followed by extensive pl…
High-quality dielectric-semiconductor interfaces are critical for reliable high-performance transistors. We report the in-situ metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) of Al$_2$O$_3$ on $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ as a potentially better alternative to the most commonly used atomic layer deposition (ALD). The growth of Al$_2$O$_3$ is performed in the same reactor as Ga$_2$O$_3$ using trimethylaluminum and O$_2$ as precursors without breaking the vacuum at a growth temperature of 600 $^0$C. The fast and slow near interface traps at the Al$_2$O$_3$/ $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ interface are identified and quantif…
Metal-organic framework (MOF) thin-films show unmatched promise as smart membranes and photo-catalytic coatings. However, their nucleation and growth resulting from intricate molecular assembly processes are not well understood, yet crucial to control the thin-film properties. Here, we directly observe the nucleation and growth behaviour of HKUST-1 thin-films by real-time in-situ AFM at different temperatures in the Cu-BTC solution. In combination with ex-situ infrared (nano-)spectroscopy, synthesis at 25°C reveals initial nucleation of rapidly growing HKUST-1 islands surrounded by a continuou…
We present a simple but powerful method to determine the thicknesses of the accumulation and depletion layers and the distribution curve of injected carriers in organic field effect transistors. The conductivity of organic semiconductors in thin film transistors was measured in-situ and continuously with a bottom contact configuration, as a function of film thickness at various gate voltages. Using this method, the thicknesses of the accumulation and depletion layers of pentacene were determined to be 0.9 nm (VG=-15 V) and 5 nm (VG=15 V).
Surface-pressure isotherms, X-ray reflectivity and X-ray near-total reflection fluorescence were used to study the properties of 1-(3-methoxycarbonyl)propyl-1-phenyl[6,6]C$_{61}$ (PCBM) that was pre-mixed with cesium carbonate and spread as a film at the air-water interface. The pre-mixed PCBM with cesium carbonate demonstrated a strikingly strong effect on the organization of the film. Whereas films formed from pure PCBM solution were rough due to strong inter-molecular interactions, the films formed from the mixture were much smoother. This indicates that the cesium carbonate moderates the i…
We describe an instrument that exploits the ongoing revolution in synchrotron sources, optics, and detectors to enable in situ studies of metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) growth of III-nitride materials using coherent x-ray methods. The system includes high-resolution positioning of the sample and detector including full rotations, an x-ray transparent chamber wall for incident and diffracted beam access over a wide angular range, and minimal thermal sample motion, giving the sub-micron positional stability and reproducibility needed for coherent x-ray studies. The instrument enables …
Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) of homoepitaxial SrTiO3 <001> was studied with in-situ x-ray specular reflectivity and surface diffuse x-ray scattering. Unlike prior reflectivity-based studies, these measurements access both the time- and the length-scales of the evolution of the surface morphology during growth. In particular, we show that this technique allows direct measurements of the diffusivity for both inter- and intra-layer transport. Our results explicitly limit the possible role of island break-up, demonstrate the key roles played by nucleation and coarsening in PLD, and place an upper…
Non-fullerene acceptors based on perylenediimides (PDIs) have garnered significant interest as an alternative to fullerene acceptors in organic photovoltaics (OPVs), but their charge transport phenomena are not well understood, especially in bulk heterojunctions (BHJs). Here, we investigate charge transport and current fluctuations by performing correlated low-frequency noise and impedance spectroscopy measurements on two BHJ OPV systems, one employing a fullerene acceptor and the other employing a dimeric PDI acceptor. In the dark, these measurements reveal that PDI-based OPVs have a greater …
We show that the thermal stability of thin films of the organic semiconductor diindenoperylene (DIP) can be strongly enhanced by aluminum oxide capping layers. By thermal desorption spectroscopy and in-situ X-ray diffraction we demonstrate that organic films do not only stay on the substrate, but even remain crystalline up to 460C, i.e. 270 deg. above their desorption point for uncapped films (190C). We argue that this strong enhancement of the thermal stability compared to uncapped and also metal-capped organic layers is related to the very weak diffusion of aluminum oxide and the structurall…
The analysis of x-ray reflectivity data from artificial heterostructures usually relies on the homogeneity of optical properties of the constituent materials. However, when the x-ray energy is tuned to an absorption edge, this homogeneity no longer exists. Within the same material, spatial regions containing elements at resonance will have optical properties very different from regions without resonating sites. In this situation, models assuming homogeneous optical properties throughout the material can fail to describe the reflectivity adequately. As we show here, resonant soft x-ray reflecti…
Crystallization is a key for ferroelectricity which is a collective behavior of microscopic electric dipoles. On the other hand, uncontrolled crystallization leads to uneven morphology and random crystal orientations, which undermines the application potential of ferroelectric thin films. In this work, we introduce a film fabrication method of low-temperature physical vapor deposition followed by restrained crystallization, with electrical properties monitored in real-time by in situ measurements. This method was adopted to fabricate films of 2-methylbenzimidazole (MBI), whose molecule crystal…
We report an in-situ microbeam grazing incidence X-ray scattering study of 2,7-dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (C$_8$-BTBT) organic semiconductor thin film deposition by hollow pen writing. Multiple transient phases are observed during the crystallization for substrate temperatures up to $\approx$93$^\circ$C. The layered smectic liquid-crystalline phase of C$_8$-BTBT initially forms and preceedes inter-layer ordering, followed by a transient crystalline phase for temperature $>$60$^\circ$C, and ultimately the stable phase. Based on these results, we demonstrate a method to produc…
The magnetic properties of a nanoscale system are inextricably linked to its local environment. In ad-atoms on surfaces and inorganic layered structures the exchange interactions result from the relative lattice positions, layer thicknesses and other environmental parameters. Here, we report on a sample-dependent sign inversion of the magnetic exchange coupling between the three unpaired spins of an organic triradical molecule embedded in a three-terminal device. This ferro-to-antiferromagnetic transition is due to structural distortions and results in a high-to-low spin ground state change in…
Thin epitaxial films of Tb metal were grown on a clean W(110) substrate in ultra-high vacuum and studied in-situ by low-energy electron microscopy. Annealed films present magnetic contrast in spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy. The energy dependence of the electron reflectivity was determined and a maximum value of its spin asymmetry of about 1\% was measured. The magnetization direction of the Tb films is in-plane. Upon raising the temperature, no change in the domain distribution is observed, while the asymmetry in the electron reflectivity decreases when approaching the critical …
High quality epitaxial thin-films of EuTiO3 have been grown on the (001) surface of SrTiO3 using pulsed laser deposition. In situ x-ray reflectivity measurements reveal that the growth is two-dimensional and enable real-time monitoring of the film thickness and roughness during growth. The film thickness, surface mosaic, surface roughness, and strain were characterized in detail using ex situ x-ray diffraction. The thicnkess and composition were confirmed with Rutherford Backscattering. The EuTiO3 films grow two-dimensionally, epitaxially, pseudomorphically, with no measurable in-plane lattice…
Nanoporous thin-films are an important class of materials, offering a way to observe fundamental surface and bulk processes with particles larger than individual atoms, but small enough to interact significantly with each other through mechanisms such as stress and surface mobility. In-Situ X-ray Reflectivity and Grazing Incidence Small Angle X-Ray Scattering (GISAXS) were used to monitor thin-films grown from Tungsten Disilicide (WSi$_2$) and Copper (Cu) nanoclusters. The nanoclusters ranged in size from 2 nm to 6 nm diameter and were made by high-pressure magnetron sputtering via plasma-gas …
We report on structural and optical properties of InGaN/GaN thin films, with a 0.46o misalignment between the surface and the (0001) plane, which were grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) on 0.34o miscut sapphire substrates. X-ray diffraction and X-ray reflectivity were used to precisely measure the degree of miscut. Reciprocal space mapping was employed to determine the lattice parameters and strain state of the InGaN layers. Rutherford backscattering spectrometry with channeling was employed to measure their composition and crystalline quality with depth resolution. No st…
In recent years, optical and electronic properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have increasingly shifted into the focus of interest of the scientific community. Here, we discuss a strategy for conveniently tuning these properties through electrostatic design. More specifically, based on quantum-mechanical simulations, we suggest an approach for creating a gradient of the electrostatic potential within a MOF thin film exploiting collective electrostatic effects. With a suitable orientation of the polar apical linkers, the resulting non-centrosymmetric packing results in an energy stairca…
Sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) provides a successful route to grow inorganic materials into polymeric films by penetrating of gaseous precursors into the polymer, both in order to enhance the functional properties of the polymer creating an organic-inorganic hybrid material, and to fabricate inorganic nanostructures when infiltrating in patterned polymer films or in selfassembled block copolymers. A SIS process consists in a controlled sequence of metal organic precursor and co-reactant vapor exposure cycles of the polymer films in an atomic layer deposition (ALD) reactor. In this wor…
The discovery of stable room temperature ferroelectricity in Croconic Acid, an organic ferroelectric material, with polarization values on par with those found in inorganic ferroelectric materials and highest among organic ferroelectric materials, has opened up possibilities to realize myriads of nano-electronic and spintronic devices based on organic ferroelectrics. Such possibilities require an adequate understanding of the ferroelectric properties of Croconic Acid grown on surfaces that are commonly employed in device fabrication. While several macroscopic studies on relatively larger cryst…
Gold nanoclusters encapsulated with organic molecules are of great interest for its possible applications in the fields of molecular electronics, catalysis and medical science. Here we demonstrate that monolayer and bilayer films of thiol-capped gold nanoclusters can exhibit diode-like properties provided controlled spatial asymmetry exist between two tunnel junctions used to connect a thiol capped gold nanoclusters. Current-voltage characteristics of this rectifier were obtained from conducting probe atomic force microscopy measurements and also from conventional two probe resistance measurem…
The nucleation mechanisms during solution deposition of organic semiconductor thin films determine the grain morphology and may influence the crystalline packing in some cases. Here, in-situ optical spectromicroscopy in reflection mode is used to study the growth mechanisms and thermal stability of 6,13-bis(trisopropylsilylethynyl)-pentacene thin films. The results show that the films form in a supersaturated state before transforming to a solid film. Molecular aggregates corresponding to subcritical nuclei in the crystallization process are inferred from optical spectroscopy measurements of t…

本研究制备不同 ODA 壳厚的 Cu2O 纳米催化剂,结合表征、DFT 与原位光谱揭示壳层排列及中间体稳定机制,实现乙醇和乙烯总法拉第效率超 73%。
Electroactive polymer thin films undergo repeated reversible structural change during operation in electrochemical applications. While synchrotron X-ray scattering is powerful for the characterization of stand-alone and ex-situ organic thin films, in situ structural characterization has been underutilized--in large part due to complications arising from supporting electrolyte scattering. This has greatly hampered the development of application relevant structure property relationships. Therefore, we have developed a new methodology for in situ and operando X-ray characterization that separates…
Exciton-polaritons in organic materials are hybrid states that result from the strong interaction of photons and the bound excitons that these materials host. Organic polaritons hold great interest for optoelectronic applications, however progress towards this end has been impeded by the lack of a first principles approach that quantifies light-matter interactions in these systems, and which would allow the formulation of molecular design rules. Here we develop such a first principles approach, quantifying light-matter interactions. We exemplify our approach by studying variants of the conjuga…
An application of the radiolysis method using X-ray synchrotron beam is developed as a novel approach to the synthesis of metal-organic films with controlled shapes and thickness. We demonstrate that a Langmuir monolayer deposited onto a silver ion-containing subphase, irradiated by an incident beam impinging below the critical angle for total reflection, induces the synthesis of a stable nanostructured silver-organic ultrathin film at the air-water interface. The X-ray scattering is also used to monitor in situ the structure of the silver layer during the synthesis process. The layer is obser…
Films of close-packed Au nanoparticles are coupled electrodynamically through their collective plasmon resonances. This collective optical response results in enhanced light-matter interactions, which can be exploited in various applications. Here, we demonstrate their application in sensing volatile organic compounds, using methanol as a test-case. Ordered films over several cm2 were obtained by interfacial self-assembly of colloidal Au nanoparticles (~10 nm diameter) through controlled evaporation of the solvent. Even though isolated nanoparticles of this size are inherently non-scattering, …
Ab initio simulations are combined with in situ infrared spectroscopy to unveil the molecular transport of H$_2$, CO$_2$, and H$_2$O in the metal organic framework MOF-74-Mg. Our study uncovers---at the atomistic level---the major factors governing the transport mechanism of these small molecules. In particular, we identify four key diffusion mechanisms and calculate the corresponding diffusion barriers, which are nicely confirmed by time-resolved infrared experiments. We also answer a long-standing question about the existence of secondary adsorption sites for the guest molecules, and we show…
The interface between organic semiconductor [OSC]/ferromagnetic [FM] material can exhibit ferromagnetism due to their orbital hybridization. Charge/spin transfer may occur from FM to OSC layer leading to the formation of `spinterface' i.e. the interface exhibiting a finite magnetic moment. In this work, the magnetic properties of Co/C$_{60}$ bilayer thin film have been studied to probe the interface between Co and C$_{60}$ layer. Polarized neutron reflectivity [PNR] measurement indicates that the thickness and moment of the spinterface are $\sim$ 2 $\pm$ 0.18 nm and 0.8 $\pm$ 0.2 $μ_B$/cage, r…
Water dissociation represents one of the most important reactions in catalysis, essential to the surface and nano sciences [e.g., Hass et al., Science, 1998, 282, 265-268; Brown et al., Science 2001, 294, 67-69; Bikondoa et al., Nature 2005, 5, 189-192]. However, the dissociation mechanism on most oxide surfaces is not well understood due to the experimental challenges of preparing surface structures and characterizing reaction pathways. To remedy this problem, we propose the metal organic framework MOF-74 as an ideal model system to study water reactions. Its crystalline structure is well cha…
The LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (001) thin film materials system was studied using in situ, simultaneous x-ray diffuse scattering and specular reflectivity during pulsed laser deposition. Using this method, we are able to measure the time dependence of the characteristic surface length scale and the characteristic time for both in-plane and downhill diffusion. These data allow for the determination of the activation energy for various diffusion processes as a function of LaAlO3 thickness. Additionally, we show that the downhill diffusion rate of the first monolayer is distinctly different than subsequent la…
Methanol occupies a central role in chemical synthesis and is considered an ideal candidate for cleaner fuel storage and transportation. It can be catalyzed from water and volatile organic compounds such as carbon dioxide, thereby offering an attractive solution for reducing carbon emissions. However molecular-level experimental observations of the catalytic process are scarce, and most existing catalysts tend to rely on empirically optimized, expensive and complex nano- composite materials. This lack of molecular-level insights has precluded the development of simpler, more cost-effective alt…
The performance of organic solar cells strongly depends on the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) morphology of the photoactive layer. This BHJ forms during the drying of the wet-deposited solution, because of physical processes such as crystallization and/or liquid liquid phase separation (LLPS). However, the process-structure relationship remains insufficiently understood. In this work, a recently developed, coupled phase field fluid mechanics framework is used to simulate the BHJ formation upon drying. For the first time, this allows to investigate the interplay between all the relevant physical pro…
Blended organic thin films have been studied during the last decades due to their applicability in organic solar cells. Although their optical and electronic features have been examined intensively, there is still lack of detailed knowledge about their growth processes and resulting morphologies, which play a key role for the efficiency of optoelectronic devices such as organic solar cells. In this study, pure and blended thin films of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and the Buckminster fullerene (C60) were grown by vacuum deposition onto a native silicon oxide substrate at two different substrat…
Ferromagnetic semiconductor europium monoxide (EuO) is believed to be an effective spin injector when directly integrated with silicon. Injection through spin-selective ohmic contact requires superb structural quality of the interface EuO/Si. Recent breakthrough in manufacturing free-of-buffer-layer EuO/Si junctions calls for structural studies of the interface between the semiconductors. Ex situ high-resolution X-ray diffraction and reflectivity accompanied by in situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction reveal direct coupling at the interface. A combined analysis of XRD and XRR data p…
2D quantum confined hybrid materials are of great interest from a solid state physics standpoint because of the rich multibody phenomena hosted, their tunability and easy synthesis allowing to create material libraries. In addition, from a technological standpoint, 2D hybrids are promising candidates for efficient, tunable, low cost materials impacting a broad range of optoelectronic devices. Different approaches and materials have therefore been investigated, with the notable example of 2D metal halide hybrid perovskites. Despite the remarkable properties of such materials, the presence of to…
Organic-inorganic nanohybrids have been synthesized by in-situ coating of self-assembled, nanotubular J-aggregates with helically wound silica ribbons. The J-aggregates retain their outstanding optical properties in the nanohybrids, but with higher mechanical stiffness, better processability, and an improved stability against photo-bleaching and chemical ambients.
We demonstrate a novel in situ polymerization technique to develop localized polymer coatings on the surface of dispersed pristine graphene sheets. Graphene sheets show great promise as strong, conductive fillers in polymer nanocomposites; however, difficulties in dispersion quality and interfacial strength between filler and matrix have been a persistent problem for graphene-based nanocomposites, particularly for pristine graphene. To address this problem, a physisorbed polymer layer is used to stabilize graphene sheets in solution. To form this protective layer, an organic microenvironment i…
The electronic wavefunctions of an atom or molecule are affected by its interactions with its environment. These interactions dictate electronic and optical processes at interfaces, and is especially relevant in the case of thin film optoelectronic devices such as organic solar cells. In these devices, charge transport and interfaces between multiple layers occur along the thickness or vertical direction, and thus such electronic interactions are crucial in determining the device properties. Here, we introduce a new in-situ spectroscopic ellipsometry data analysis method called DART with the a…
