In recent years, optical and electronic properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have increasingly shifted into the focus of interest of the scientific community. Here, we discuss a strategy for conveniently tuning these properties through electrostatic design. More specifically, based on quantum-mechanical simulations, we suggest an approach for creating a gradient of the electrostatic potential within a MOF thin film exploiting collective electrostatic effects. With a suitable orientation of the polar apical linkers, the resulting non-centrosymmetric packing results in an energy staircase of the frontier electronic states reminiscent of the situation in a pin-photodiode. This 1-D gradient of the electrostatic potential causes a closure of the global energy gap and also shifts core-level energies by an energy equaling the size of the original band gap. The realization of such assemblies could be based on so-called pillared layer MOFs, grown in an oriented fashion on a solid substrate employing layer by layer growth techniques. In this context, the simulations provide guidelines regarding the design of the polar apical linker molecules that would allow the realization of MOF thin films with the (vast majority of the) molecular dipole moments pointing in the same direction.
We compute the electronic structure of two-dimensional (2D) materials decorated with self-assembled organic monolayers using density functional theory. We find that 2D materials are strongly impacted by near-field electrostatic effects resulting from high multipoles of the organic layer electronic density. We show that this effect can lead to significant (~0.5V) modulation of the in-plane potential experienced by electrons in 2D materials within ~4Åfrom the molecular layer, with a transition between near- and far-field depending on the lateral extent of the molecules. We develop a theory of th…
We study the physisorption of organic oligomers on the ZnO($10\bar{1}0$) surface using first-principles density-functional theory and non-empirical embedding methods. We find that both in-plane location and orientation of the molecules are completely determined by the coupling of their quadrupole moments to the periodic dipolar electric field present at the semiconductor surface. The adsorption is associated with the formation of a molecular dipole moment perpendicular to the surface, which bears an unexpected linear relation to the molecule-substrate interaction energy. Long oligomers such as…
First-principles simulations of electronic properties of hybrid inorganic/organic interfaces are challenging, as common density-functional theory (DFT) approximations target specific material classes like bulk semiconductors or gas-phase molecules. Taking as a prototypical example anthracene physisorbed on monolayer MoS$_2$, we assess the ability of different \textit{ab initio} schemes to describe the electronic structure using semi-local and hybrid DFT. For the latter, an unconstrained three-parameter range-separation scheme is employed. Comparisons against many-body perturbation theory resul…
In the last years, important non-linear optical results on sol-gel and polymeric materials have been reported, with values comparable to those found in crystals. These new materials contain push-pull chromophores either incorporated as guest in a high Tg polymeric matrix (doped polymers) or grafted onto the polymeric matrix. These systems present several advantages; however they require significant improvement at the molecular level - by designing optimized chromophores with very large molecular figure of merit, specific to each application targeted. Besides, it was recently stated in polymers…
The physics of organic semiconductors is dominated by the effects of energetic disorder. We show that image forces reduce the electrostatic component of the total energetic disorder near an interface with a metal electrode. Typically, the variance of energetic disorder is dramatically reduced at the first few layers of organic semiconductor molecules adjacent to the metal electrode. Implications for charge injection into organic semiconductors are discussed.
The amplitude of the roughness-induced energetic disorder at the metal/organic interface is calculated. It was found that for moderately rough electrodes, the correction to the electrostatic image potential at the charge location is small. For this reason, roughness-induced energetic disorder cannot noticeably affect charge carrier injection, contrary to the recent reports.
We study the long-time self-diffusion of a single conjugated organic para-sexiphenyl (p-6P) molecule physisorbed on the inorganic ZnO $\left(10\overline{1}0\right)$ surface by means of all-atom molecular dynamics computer simulations. We find strongly anisotropic diffusion processes in which the diffusive motion along the polar [0001] direction of the surface can be many orders of magnitudes slower at relevant experimental temperatures than in the perpendicular direction. The observation can be rationalized by the underlying charge pattern of the electrostatically heterogeneous surface which i…
Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have attracted significant attention due to their chemical versatility combined with a significant number of potential applications. Of particular interest are two-dimensional COFs, where the organic building units are linked by covalent bonds within a plane. Most properties of these COFs are determined by the relative arrangement of neighboring layers. These are typically found to be laterally displaced, which, for example, reduces the electronic coupling between the layers. In the present contribution, we use dispersion-corrected density-functional theory t…
In organic solar cells, photogenerated singlet excitons form charge transfer (CT) complexes, which subsequently split into free charge carriers. Here, we consider the contributions of excess energy and molecular quadrupole moments to the charge separation process. We investigate charge photogeneration in two separate bulk heterojunction systems consisting of the polymer donor PTB7-Th and two non-fullerene acceptors, ITIC and h-ITIC. CT state dissociation in these donor-acceptor systems is monitored by charge density decay dynamics obtained from transient absorption experiments. We study the el…
The separation of liquid mixture has been studied for a long time. Separation proceeds based on the difference in physical properties including pore size and electrostatic interaction. Therefore, there are many difficulties in separation of materials having similar size or polarities in physical properties such as ethanol-water and 1,4-dioxane-water mixtures. While we still lack a universal generalization of these ideas to the separation, pervaporation based on a difference in transport rates by permeability through a membrane by the permeate was early suggested. Yet there is an existing techn…
Although ferroelectric compounds containing hydrogen bonds were among the first to be discovered, organic ferroelectrics are relatively rare. The discovery of high polarization at room temperature in croconic acid [Nature \textbf{463}, 789 (2010)] has led to a renewed interest in organic ferroelectrics. We present an ab-initio study of two ferroelectric organic molecular crystals, 1-cyclobutene-1,2-dicarboxylic acid (CBDC) and 2-phenylmalondialdehyde (PhMDA). By using a distortion-mode analysis we shed light on the microscopic mechanisms contributing to the polarization, which we find to be as…

We study the influence of polarity on the binding and diffusion of single conjugated organic molecules on the inorganic (10-10) zinc oxide surface by means of all-atom molecular dynamics simulations at room temperature and above. In particular, we consider the effects of partial fluorination of the para-sexiphenyl (p-6P) molecule with chemical modifications of one head group (p-6PF2) or both (symmetric) head and tail (p-6PF4). Quantum-mechanical and classical simulations both result in consistent and highly distinct dipole moments and densities of the fluorinated molecules, which interestingly…
Self assembled films of organic azobenzene dye chicago sky blue 6B (CSB) have been fabricated onto solid substarte by electrostatic alternate adsorption of polycation ploy(allyl amine hydrochloride) (PAH) and CSB. UV-Vis absorption spectroscopic studies reveal the successful incorporation of CSB molecules into LbL films and consequent formation of aggregates. This view is supported by FTIR spectroscopic studies. Scanning electron microscope picture confirms the formation of nano crystalline aggregates in the LbL films. About 15 minute is required to complete the electrostatic interaction betwe…
Ferromagnetic metal-organic semiconductor (FM-OSC) hybrid interfaces have shown to play an important role for spin injection in organic spintronics. Here, 11,11,12,12-tetracyanonaptho-2,6-quinodimethane (TNAP) is introduced as an interfacial layer in Co-OSCs heterojunction with an aim to tune the spin injection. The Co/TNAP interface is investigated by use of X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS/UPS), near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). Hybrid interface states (HIS) are observed at Co/TNAP interface resulting from ch…
By applying Monte Carlo simulations we found that the extraction of bound polaron pairs (PP) at the electrodes is an important loss factor limiting the efficiency of organic optoelectronic and photovoltaic devices. Based upon this finding, we developed a unified analytic model consisting of exact Onsager theory, describing the dissociation of PP in organic donor-acceptor heterojunctions, the Sokel-Hughes model for the extraction of free polarons at the electrodes, as well as of PP diffusion leading to the aforementioned loss mechanism, which was not considered previously. Our approach allows t…
We use spectrally-resolved magneto-electroluminescence (EL) measurements to study the energy dependence of hyperfine interactions between polaron and nuclear spins in organic LEDs. Using layered devices based on Bphen/MTDATA -- a well-known exciplex emitter -- we show that the increase in EL emission intensity $I$ due to small applied magnetic fields of order 100 mT is markedly larger at the high-energy blue end of the EL spectrum (dI/I ~11%) than at the low-energy red end (~4%). Concurrently, the widths of the magneto-EL curves increase monotonically from blue to red, revealing an increasing …
General properties of the transport of charge carriers (electrons and holes) in disordered organic materials are discussed. It was demonstrated that the dominant part of the total energetic disorder in organic material is usually provided by the electrostatic disorder, generated by randomly located and oriented dipoles and quadrupoles. For this reason this disorder is strongly spatially correlated. Spatial correlation directly governs the field dependence of the carrier drift mobility. Shape of the current transients, which is of primary importance for a correct determination of the carrier mo…
We report on the optical characterization of non-polar a-plane InGaN quantum dots (QDs) grown by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy using a short nitrogen anneal treatment at the growth temperature. Spatial and spectral mapping of sub-surface QDs have been achieved by cathodoluminescence at 8 K. Microphotoluminescence studies of the QDs reveal resolution limited sharp peaks with typical linewidth of 1 meV at 4.2 K. Time-resolved photoluminescence studies suggest the excitons in these QDs have a typical lifetime of 538 ps, much shorter than that of the c-plane QDs, which is strong evidence of th…
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess a hybrid nature, combining the inorganic properties from the metal ions and the organic properties from the molecular linkers. Stroppa, \textit{et al.}, showed that the perovskite-type MOF [C(NH$_2$)$_3$]M[(HCOO)$_3$] (M = Cr, Cu) exhibits the magneto-electric coupled multiferroicity [Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 50, 5847 (2011) and Adv. Mater. 25, 2284 (2013)]. Moreover, their ferroelectricity arises from the hybrid improper mechanism, which also explains the magneto-electric coupling. In this work, we further examine the electric and magnetic properties of [C…
Owing to prospective energy-efficient and environmentally benign applications, organic ferroelectric materials are useful and necessary alternative to inorganic ferroelectrics. Although the first discovered ferroelectric, Rochelle salt, was a salt of an organic compound, organic ferroelectrics have not been as abundant as the inorganic ones. Further, the small polarization values in the organic systems discovered so far have been a demotivating factor for their applications. However, scientific interest and activities surrounding such materials, for the purpose of fundamental understanding and…
Perovskite metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently emerged as potential candidates for multiferroicity. However, the compounds synthesized so far possess only weak ferromagnetism and low polarization. Additionally, the very low magnetic transition temperatures ($T_c$) also pose a challenge to the application of the materials. We have computationally designed a mixed metal perovskite MOF -[C(NH2)3][(Cu0.5Mn0.5)(HCOO)3]- that is predicted to have magnetization two orders of magnitude larger than its parent ([C(NH2)3][Cu(HCOO)3]), a significantly larger polarization (9.9 μC/cm2), and an enh…
Superconductivity and polar charge fluctuation are studied in an organic conductor with the dimer-molecule degree of freedom. The extended Hubbard models, where the intra-dimer electronic structure and the inter-dimer Coulomb interactions are taken into account, are analyzed by the random-phase approximation and the fluctuation-exchange approximation. Superconductivity appears in a vicinity of the charge-density wave (CDW) phase where the electronic charge distributions are polarized inside of dimers. The extended s-wave type paring is favored and its competitive relations with the superconduc…
We present a simple model of the bimolecular charge carrier recombination in polar amorphous organic semiconductors where the dominant part of the energetic disorder is provided by permanent dipoles and show that the recombination rate constant could be much smaller than the corresponding Langevin rate constant. The reason for the strong decrease of the rate constant is the long range spatial correlation of the random energy landscape in amorphous dipolar materials, without spatial correlation even strong disorder does not modify the Langevin rate constant. Our study shows that the significant…
We develop two new amphiphilic molecules that are shown to act as efficient surfactants for carbon nanotubes in non-polar organic solvents. The active conjugated groups, which are highly attracted to graphene nanotube surface, are based on pyrene and porphyrin. We show that relatively short (C18) carbon tails are insufficient to provide stabilization. As our ultimate aim is to disperse and stabilize nanotubes in siloxane matrix (polymer and crosslinked elastomer), both surfactant molecules were made with long siloxane tails to facilitate solubility and steric stabilization. We show that pyrene…
The organic spinterface describes the spin-polarized properties that develop, due to charge transfer, at the interface between a ferromagnetic metal (FM) and the molecules of an organic semiconductor. Yet, if the latter is also magnetic (e.g. molecular spin chains), the interfacial magnetic coupling can generate complexity within magnetotransport experiments. Also, assembling this interface may degrade the properties of its constituents (e.g. spin crossover or non-sublimable molecules). To circumvent these issues, one can separate the molecular and FM films using a less reactive nonmagnetic me…
Polymer fibers are currently exploited in tremendously important technologies. Their innovative properties are mainly determined by the behavior of the polymer macromolecules under the elongation induced by external mechanical or electrostatic forces, characterizing the fiber drawing process. Although enhanced physical properties were observed in polymer fibers produced under strong stretching conditions, studies of the process-induced nanoscale organization of the polymer molecules are not available, and most of fiber properties are still obtained on an empirical basis. Here we reveal the ori…
An appropriate model for the random energy landscape in organic glasses is a spatially correlated Gaussian field, generated by randomly located and oriented dipoles and quadrupoles. Correlation properties of energetic disorder directly dictates the mobility dependence on the applied electric field. Electrostatic disorder is significantly modified in the vicinity of the electrode that affects injection properties. Correlated Gaussian field forms clusters. We suggest a simple method to estimate an asymptotics of the cluster distribution on size for deep clusters where a value of the field on eac…
It was discovered in 2010 that Croconic Acid, in its crystal form, has the highest polarization among organic ferroelectrics. In the context of eliminating toxic substances from electronic devices, Croconic Acid has a great potential as a sublimable lead-free ferroelectric. However, studies on ferroelectric properties of its thin films are only in their early stages and its capability to be incorporated in nanoscale devices is unknown. In this work, we demonstrate, upon ferroelectric switching at the nanoscale, stable and enduring room temperature polarization with no leakage current in Crocon…
The processability and optoelectronic properties of organic semiconductors can be tuned and manipulated via chemical design. The substitution of the alkyl side chains by oligoethers has recently been successful for applications such as bioelectronic sensors and photocatalytic water-splitting. The carbon-oxygen bond in oligoethers is likely to render the system softer and more prone to dynamical disorder that can be detrimental to charge transport for example. We use neutron spectroscopy, X-Ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy to study …
We examine the possibility of observing Bose condensation of a confined two-dimensional polariton gas in an organic quantum well. We deduce a suitable parameterization of a model Hamiltonian based upon the cavity geometry, the biexciton binding energy, and similar spectroscopic and structural data. By converting the sum-over-states to a semiclassical integration over $d$-dimensional phase space, we show that while an ideal 2-D Bose gas will not undergo condensation, an interacting gas with the Bogoliubov dispersion $H(p)\approx s p$ close to $p=0$ will undergo Bose condensation at a given crit…
The combined effect of bulk and interface electron-phonon couplings on the transport properties is investigated in a model for organic semiconductors gated with polarizable dielectrics. While the bulk electron-phonon interaction affects the behavior of mobility in the coherent regime below room temperature, the interface coupling is dominant for the activated high $T$ contribution of localized polarons. In order to improve the description of the transport properties, the presence of disorder is needed in addition to electron-phonon couplings. The effects of a weak disorder largely enhance the …
