We investigate the proposed experimental setup for measuring the topological charge in a an Ising anyon system by means of Fabry-Pérot interferometry with a chiral edge state. We show that such an interferometer has the unintended but not necessarily unwelcome effect of stabilizing the state of the system being measured (i.e., a topological qubit). We show further that interactions between the edge mode and the localized bulk quasiparticles can have the effect of polarizing the qubit, stabilizing its state. We discuss the these results in the context of recent interferometer experiments in the 5/2 fractional quantum Hall state, where the first of these effects is small, but the second may be relevant to the observed phenomena.
Anyon models can be symmetric under some permutations of their topological charges. One can then conceive topological defects that, under monodromy, transform anyons according to a symmetry. We study the realization of such defects in the toric code model, showing that a process where defects are braided and fused has the same outcome as if they were Ising anyons. These ideas can also be applied in the context of topological codes.
The anyonic excitations of topological two-body color code model are used to implement a set of gates. Because of two-body interactions, the model can be simulated in optical lattices. The excitations have nontrivial mutual statistics, and are coupled to nontrivial gauge fields. The underlying lattice structure provides various opportunities for encoding the states of a logical qubit in anyonic states. The interactions make the transition between different anyonic states, so being logical operation in the computational bases of the encoded qubit. Two-qubit gates can be performed in a topologic…
Ising-type non-Abelian anyons are likely to occur in a number of physical systems, including quantum Hall systems, where recent experiments support their existence. In general, non-Abelian anyons may be utilized to provide a topologically error-protected medium for quantum information processing. However, the topologically protected operations that may be obtained by braiding and measuring topological charge of Ising anyons are precisely the Clifford gates, which are not computationally universal. The Clifford gate set can be made universal by supplementing it with single-qubit pi/8-phase gate…
Topological quantum computation is an implementation of a quantum computer in a way that radically reduces decoherence. Topological qubits are encoded in the topological evolution of two-dimensional quasi-particles called anyons and universal set of quantum gates can be constructed by braiding these anyons yielding to a topologically protected circuit model. In the present study we remind the basics of this emerging quantum computation scheme and illustrate how a topological qubit built with three Fibonacci anyons might be adopted to achieve leakage free braiding gate by exchanging the anyons …
We consider two-dimensional lattice models that support Ising anyonic excitations and are coupled to a thermal bath. We propose a phenomenological model for the resulting short-time dynamics that includes pair-creation, hopping, braiding, and fusion of anyons. By explicitly constructing topological quantum error-correcting codes for this class of system, we use our thermalization model to estimate the lifetime of the quantum information stored in the encoded spaces. To decode and correct errors in these codes, we adapt several existing topological decoders to the non-Abelian setting. We perfor…
We consider the string-net model on the honeycomb lattice for Ising anyons in the presence of a string tension. This competing term induces a nontrivial dynamics of the non-Abelian anyonic quasiparticles and may lead to a breakdown of the topological phase. Using high-order series expansions and exact diagonalizations, we determine the robustness of this doubled Ising phase which is found to be separated from two gapped phases. An effective quantum dimer model emerges in the large tension limit giving rise to two different translation symmetry-broken phases. Consequently, we obtain four transi…
We study a quantum double model whose degrees of freedom are Ising anyons. The terms of the Hamiltonian of this system give rise to a competition between single and double topologies. By studying the energy spectra of the Hamiltonian at different values of the coupling constants, we find extended gapless regions which include a large number of critical points described by conformal field theories with central charge c=1. These theories are part of the Z_2 orbifold of the bosonic theory compactified on a circle. We observe that the Hilbert space of our anyonic model can be associated with exten…
We show that spin-spin correlations in a non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid are associated with a characteristic inhomogeneous charge density distribution in the vicinity of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ vortices. This density profile and the corresponding local electric fields are observable, e.g., by means of surface probe techniques. Conversely, by applying bias voltages to several probe tips, one can stabilize Ising anyons ($\mathbb{Z}_2$ vortices harboring a Majorana zero mode) at designated positions, where we predict a clear Majorana signature in energy absorption spectroscopy.
We study a microscopic model of interacting fermions in a ladder setup, where the total number of particles is conserved. At a special point, the ground state is known and gives rise to a topological state of matter with edge modes obeying the statistics of Ising anyons. Using a combination of bosonization as well as full scale numerical density-matrix renormalization group analysis, we map out the full phase diagram. We nd that the topological phase survives in an extended parameter regime. Remarkably, an additional symmetry is required to protect the topological phase.
In this work we present solutions to Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov (KZ) equations corresponding to conformal block wavefunctions of non-Abelian Ising- and Fibonacci-Anyons. We solve these equations around regular singular points in configuration space in terms of hypergeometric functions and derive explicit monodromy representations of the braid group action. This confirms the correct non-Abelian statistics of the solutions. One novelty of our approach is that we explicitly keep track of spin basis states and identify conformal blocks uniquely with such states at relevant points in moduli space.
An exotic feature of the fractional quantum Hall effect is the emergence of anyons, which are quasiparticle excitations with fractional statistics. In the presence of a symmetry, such as $U(1)$ charge conservation, it is well known that anyons can carry fractional symmetry quantum numbers. In this work we reveal a different class of symmetry realizations: i.e. anyons can "breed" in multiples under symmetry operation. We focus on the global Ising ($Z_2$) symmetry and show examples of these unconventional symmetry realizations in Laughlin-type fractional quantum Hall states. One remarkable conse…
Dimer models have long been a fruitful playground for understanding topological physics. Here we introduce a new class - termed Majorana-dimer models - wherein bosonic dimers are decorated with pairs of Majorana modes. We find that the simplest examples of such systems realize an intriguing, intrinsically fermionic phase of matter that can be viewed as the product of a chiral Ising theory, which hosts deconfined non-Abelian quasiparticles, and a topological $p_x - ip_y$ superconductor. While the bulk anyons are described by a single copy of the Ising theory, the edge remains fully gapped. Cons…
We study and generalize the class of qubit topological stabilizer codes that arise in the Abelian phase of the honeycomb lattice model. The resulting family of codes, which we call `matching codes' realize the same anyon model as the surface codes, and so may be similarly used in proposals for quantum computation. We show that these codes are particularly well suited to engineering twist defects that behave as Majorana modes. A proof of principle system that demonstrates the braiding properties of the Majoranas is discussed that requires only three qubits.
Defects in topologically ordered models have interesting properties that are reminiscent of the anyonic excitations of the models themselves. For example, dislocations in the toric code model are known as twists and possess properties that are analogous to Ising anyons. We strengthen this analogy by using the topological entanglement entropy as a diagnostic tool to identify properties of both defects and excitations in the toric code. Specifically, we show, through explicit calculation, that the toric code model including twists and dyon excitations has the same quantum dimensions, the same to…
We discuss generalizations of quantum spin Hamiltonians using anyonic degrees of freedom. The simplest model for interacting anyons energetically favors neighboring anyons to fuse into the trivial (`identity') channel, similar to the quantum Heisenberg model favoring neighboring spins to form spin singlets. Numerical simulations of a chain of Fibonacci anyons show that the model is critical with a dynamical critical exponent z=1, and described by a two-dimensional conformal field theory with central charge c=7/10. An exact mapping of the anyonic chain onto the two-dimensional tricritical Ising…
We introduce and study a class of anyon models that are a natural generalization of Ising anyons and Majorana fermion zero modes. These models combine an Ising anyon sector with a sector associated with $SO(m)_2$ Chern-Simons theory. We show how they can arise in a simple scenario for electron fractionalization and give a complete account of their quasiparticles types, fusion rules, and braiding. We show that the image of the braid group is finite for a collection of $2n$ fundamental quasiparticles and is a proper subgroup of the metaplectic representation of $Sp(2n-2,\mathbb{F}_m)\ltimes H(2n…
We consider the effect of quenched spatial disorder on systems of interacting, pinned non-Abelian anyons as might arise in disordered Hall samples at filling fractions ν=5/2 or ν=12/5. In one spatial dimension, such disordered anyon models have previously been shown to exhibit a hierarchy of infinite randomness phases. Here, we address systems in two spatial dimensions and report on the behavior of Ising and Fibonacci anyons under the numerical strong-disorder renormalization group (SDRG). In order to manage the topology-dependent interactions generated during the flow, we introduce a planar a…
Motivated by the presence of Ising transitions that take place entirely in the singlet sector of frustrated spin-1/2 ladders and spin-1 chains, we study two types of effective dimer models on ladders, a quantum dimer model and a quantum loop model. Building on the constraints imposed on the dimers, we develop a Density Matrix Renormalization Group algorithm that takes full advantage of the relatively small Hilbert space that only grows as Fibonacci number. We further show that both models can be mapped rigorously onto a hard-boson model first studied by Fendley, Sengupta and Sachdev [Phys. Rev…

Recent theoretical studies inspired by experiments on the Kitaev magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ highlight the nontrivial impact of phonons on the thermal Hall conductivity of chiral topological phases. Here we introduce mixed mesoscopic-macroscopic devices that allow refined thermal-transport probes of non-Abelian spin liquids with Ising topological order. These devices feature a quantum-coherent mesoscopic region with negligible phonon conductance, flanked by macroscopic lobes that facilitate efficient thermalization between chiral Majorana edge modes and bulk phonons. We show that our devices enable $(…
Boundary conformal field theory is brought to bear on the study of topological insulating phases of non-abelian anyonic chains. These topologically non-trivial phases display protected anyonic end modes. We consider antiferromagnetically coupled spin-1/2 su(2)$_k$ chains at any level $k$, focusing on the most prominent examples; the case $k = 2$ describes Ising anyons (equivalent to Majorana fermions) and $k = 3$ corresponds to Fibonacci anyons. We prove that the braiding of these emergent anyons exhibits the same braiding behavior as the physical quasiparticles. These results suggest a `solid…
We propose and analyze the effect of anyonic interferometers that are designed such that the probe anyons traveling in a given path through the interferometer twist or braid around each other. These "twisted" interferometers are found to provide operational utility that may not be available from anyon braiding operations and standard (untwisted) anyonic interferometry measurements. In particular, it enables Ising anyons to generate "magic states," which can be used to implement pi/8-phase gates. We consider the possible implementations of such twisted interferometers in quantum Hall systems, 2…
Three manifold topology is used to analyze the effect of anyonic interferometers in which the probe anyons' path along an arm crosses itself, leading to a "twisted" or braided space-time trajectory for the probe anyons. In the case of Ising non-Abelian anyons, twisted interferometry is shown to be able to generate a topologically protected $π/8$-phase gate, which cannot be generated from quasiparticle braiding.
We report experiments on temperature and Hall voltage bias dependence of the superperiodic conductance oscillations in the novel Laughlin quasiparticle interferometer, where quasiparticles of the 1/3 fractional quantum Hall fluid execute a closed path around an island of the 2/5 fluid. The amplitude of the oscillations fits well the quantum-coherent thermal dephasing dependence predicted for a two point-contact chiral edge channel interferometer in the full experimental temperature range 10.2<T<141 mK. The temperature dependence observed in the interferometer is clearly distinct from the behav…
We review the general strategy of topologically protected quantum information processing based on non-Abelian anyons, in which quantum information is encoded into the fusion channels of pairs of anyons and in fusion paths for multi-anyon states, realized in two-dimensional fractional quantum Hall systems. The quantum gates which are needed for the quantum information processing in these multi-qubit registers are implemented by exchange or braiding of the non-Abelian anyons that are at fixed positions in two-dimensional coordinate space. As an example we consider the Pfaffian topological quantu…
Quantum computation provides a unique opportunity to explore new regimes of physical systems through the creation of non-trivial quantum states far outside of the classical limit. However, such computation is remarkably sensitive to noise and undergoes rapid dephasing in most cases. One potential solution to these prosaic concerns is to encode and process the information using topological manipulations of so-called anyons, particles in two dimensions with non-Abelian statistics. Unfortunately, practical implementation of such a topological system remains far from complete, both in terms of phy…
I examine, in general, how tunable interactions may be used to perform anyonic teleportation and generate braiding transformations for non-Abelian anyons. I explain how these methods are encompassed by the "measurement-only" approach to topological quantum computation. The physically most relevant example of Ising anyons or Majorana zero-modes is considered in detail, particularly in the context of Majorana nanowires.
We proposed an entangled multi-knot lattice model to explore the exotic statistics of anyon. This knot lattice model bears abelian and non-abelian anyons as well as integral and fractional filling states that is similar to quantum Hall system. The fusion rules of anyon are explicitly demonstrated by braiding on crossing states of the multi-knot lattice. The statistical character of anyon is quantified by topological linking number of multi-knot link. Long-range coupling interaction is a fundamental character of this knot lattice model. The short range coupling models, such as Ising model, ferm…
We demonstrate that a thermal metal of Majorana fermions forms in a two-dimensional system of interacting non-Abelian (Ising) anyons in the presence of moderate disorder. This bulk metallic phase arises in the $ν=5/2$ quantum Hall state when disorder pins the anyonic quasiparticles. More generally, it naturally occurs for various proposed systems supporting Majorana fermion zero modes when disorder induces the random pinning of a finite density of vortices. This includes all two-dimensional topological superconductors in so-called symmetry class D. A distinct experimental signature of the ther…
We propose the platform of a Yang-Lee anyon system which is constructed from Majorana bound states in topological superconductors. Yang-Lee anyons, described by the non-unitary conformal field theory with the central charge $c=-22/5$, are non-unitary counterparts of Fibonacci anyons, obeying the same fusion rule, but exhibiting non-unitary non-Abelian braiding statistics. We consider a topological superconductor junction system coupled with dissipative electron baths, which realizes a non-Hermitian interacting Majorana system. Numerically estimating the central charge, we examine the condition…
We show that the resistance of the v=5/2 quantum Hall state, confined to an interferometer, oscillates with magnetic field consistent with an Ising-type non-Abelian state. In three quantum Hall interferometers of different sizes, resistance oscillations at v=7/3 and integer filling factors have the magnetic field period expected if the number of quasiparticles contained within the interferometer changes so as to keep the area and the total charge within the interferometer constant. Under these conditions, an Abelian state such as the (3,3,1) state would show oscillations with the same period a…
Non-Abelian anyons promise to reveal spectacular features of quantum mechanics that could ultimately provide the foundation for a decoherence-free quantum computer. A key breakthrough in the pursuit of these exotic particles originated from Read and Green's observation that the Moore-Read quantum Hall state and a (relatively simple) two-dimensional p+ip superconductor both support so-called Ising non-Abelian anyons. Here we establish a similar correspondence between the Z_3 Read-Rezayi quantum Hall state and a novel two-dimensional superconductor in which charge-2e Cooper pairs are built from …
It is well-known that many topological phase transitions of intrinsic Abelian topological phases are accompanied by condensation and confinement of anyons. However, for non-Abelian topological phases, more intricate phenomena can occur at their phase transitions, because the multiple degenerate degrees of freedom of a non-Abelian anyon can change in different ways after phase transitions. In this paper, we study these new phenomena, including partial condensation, partial deconfinement and especially anyon splitting (a non-Abelian anyon splits into different kinds of the new anyon species) usi…
Most quantum entanglement investigations are focused on two qubits or some finite (small) chain structure, since the infinite chain structure is a considerably cumbersome task. Therefore, the quantum entanglement properties involving an infinite chain structure is quite important, not only because the mathematical calculation is cumbersome but also because real materials are well represented by an infinite chain. Thus, in this paper we consider an entangled diamond chain with Ising and anisotropic Heisenberg (Ising-XXZ) coupling. Two interstitial particles are coupled through Heisenberg coupli…
We find a series of possible continuous quantum phase transitions between fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states at the same filling fraction in two-component quantum Hall systems. These can be driven by tuning the interlayer tunneling and/or interlayer repulsion. One side of the transition is the Halperin (p,p,p-3) Abelian two-component state while the other side is the non-Abelian Z4 parafermion (Read-Rezayi) state. We predict that the transition is a continuous transition in the 3D Ising class. The critical point is described by a Z2 gauged Ginzburg-Landau theory. These results have implicati…
Anyonic interferometry probes the braiding phases of excitations in topologically ordered matter. This technique is well established for charged quasiparticles in the fractional quantum Hall effect. We propose to extend it to neutral anyons, such as Ising anyons in Kitaev magnets and quasiparticles in other neutral spin liquids. We find that the thermal current through an interferometer is sensitive to the statistics of tunneling quasiparticles. We present a systematic investigation of signatures of various Abelian and non-Abelian topological orders in Fabry-Pérot and Mach-Zehnder interferomet…
Quantum entanglement is one of the most fascinating types of correlation that can be shared only among quantum systems. The Heisenberg chain is one of the simplest quantum chains which exhibits a reach entanglement feature, due to the Heisenberg interaction is quantum coupling in the spin system. The two particles were coupled trough XYZ coupling or simply called as two-qubit XYZ spin, which are the responsible for the emergence of thermal entanglement. These two-qubit operators are bonded to two nodal Ising spins, and this process is repeated infinitely resulting in a diamond chain structure.…
