Let F be a finite field and l a prime not equal to the characteristic of F. Let K be the function field of a surface over F. Assume that K contains a primitive lth root of unity. In the paper we prove a certain local-global principle for elements of H^3(K, μ_l) in terms of symbols in H^2(K, μ_l) with respect to discrete valuations of K. We also show that this local global principle is equivalent to the vanishing of certain unramified cohomology groups of 3-folds over finite fields. Using this local-global principle we show that every element in H^3(F, μ_l) is a symbol. The vanishing of the unramified cohomology groups has consequences in the study of integral Tate conjecture and Brauer-Manin obstruction for existence of zero-cycles.
We prove a version of Ihara's Lemma for degree q=1,2 cuspidal cohomology of the symmetric space attached to automorphic forms of arbitrary weight (k\geq 2) over an imaginary quadratic field with torsion (prime power) coefficients. This extends an earlier result of the author which concerned the case k=2, q=1. Our method here is different and uses results of Diamond and Blasius-Franke-Grunewald. We discuss the relationship of our main theorem to the problem of the existence of level-raising congruences.
We give an explicit description of the inner cohomology of an adelic locally symmetric space of a given level structure attached to the general linear group of prime rank $n$, with coefficients in a locally constant sheaf of complex vector spaces. We show that for all prime $n$ the inner cohomology vanishes in all degrees for nonconstant sheaves, otherwise the quotient module of the inner cohomology classes that are not cuspidal is trivial in all degrees for primes $n = 2,3$, and for all primes $n \geq 5$ it is trivial in all but finitely many degrees where it has a `simple' description in ter…
Let Gamma be a congruence subgroup of the Picard modular group of an imaginary number field k, and let D be the associated symmetric space. We describe a method to compute the integral cohomology of the locally symmetric space Gamma\D. The method is implemented for the case k=Q(i) and k=Q(sqrt(-3)), and the cohomology is computed for various Gamma.
We compute the cohomology with compact supports of a Picard modular surface as a virtual module over the product of the appropriate Galois group and the appropriate Hecke algebra. We use the method developed by Ihara, Langlands, and Kottwitz: comparison of the Grothendieck-Lefschetz formula and the Arthur-Selberg trace formula. Our implementation of this method takes as its starting point the works of Laumon and Morel.
The aim of this article is to give a concise algebraic treatment of the modular symbols formalism, generalised from modular curves to Hecke triangle surfaces. A sketch is included of how the modular symbols formalism gives rise to the standard algorithms for the computation of holomorphic modular forms. Precise and explicit connections are established to the cohomology of Hecke triangle surfaces and group cohomology. In all the note a general commutative ring is used as coefficient ring in view of applications to the computation of modular forms over rings different from the complex numbers. T…
We prove asymptotic upper bounds for the $L^2$ Betti numbers of the locally symmetric spaces associated to a quasi-split $U(4)$. These manifolds are 8-dimensional, and we prove bounds in degrees 2 and 3, with the behaviour in the other degrees being well understood. In degree 3, we conjecture that these bounds are sharp. Our main tool is the endoscopic classification of automorphic representations of U(N) by Mok.
In this article, we use deformation theory of Galois representations valued in the symplectic group of degree four to prove a freeness result for the cohomology of certain quaternionic unitary Shimura variety over the universal deformation ring for certain type of residual representation satisfying a property called rigidity. This result plays an important role in the proof of the arithmetic level raising theorem for the symplectic similitude group of degree four over the field of rational numbers by the author.
The cohomology $H^*(Γ, E) $ of a torsion-free arithmetic subgroup $Γ$ of the special linear $\mathbb{Q}$-group $\mathsf{G} = SL_n$ may be interpreted in terms of the automorphic spectrum of $Γ$. Within this framework, there is a decomposition of the cohomology into the cuspidal cohomology and the Eisenstein cohomology. The latter space is decomposed according to the classes $\{\mathsf{P}\}$ of associate proper parabolic $\mathbb{Q}$-subgroups of $\mathsf{G}$. Each summand $H^*_{\mathrm{\{P\}}}(Γ, E)$ is built up by Eisenstein series (or residues of such) attached to cuspidal automorphic forms …
Let p>2 be prime, and let n,m be positive integers. For cyclic field extensions E/F of degree p^n that contain a primitive pth root of unity, we show that the associated F_p[Gal(E/F)]-modules H^m(G_E,mu_p) have a sparse decomposition. When E/F is additionally a subextension of a cyclic, degree p^{n+1} extension E'/F, we give a more refined F_p[Gal(E/F)]-decomposition of H^m(G_E,mu_p).
We compute the rational cohomology of the universal family of smooth cubic surfaces using Vassiliev's method of simplicial resolution. Modulo embedding, the universal family has cohomology isomorphic to that of $\mathbb{P}^2$. A consequence of our theorem is that over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, away from finitely many characteristics, the average number of points on a smooth cubic surface is $q^2 + q + 1$.
In this paper, we give an approach to the zeta values of a (proper regular) arithmetic scheme X at the integers r>=d:=dim(X), using étale cohomology of X with Q_p(r) and Z_p(r)-coefficients.
We prove that the completed cohomology groups of SL_N(Z) in fixed degree stabilize as N goes to infinity. We also prove that the action of Hecke operators on stable cohomology is trivial, in a precisely defined sense.
We consider the loci of d-elliptic curves in $M_2$, and corresponding loci of d-elliptic surfaces in $A_2$. We show how a description of these loci as quotients of a product of modular curves can be used to calculate cohomology of natural local systems on them, both as mixed Hodge structures and $\ell$-adic Galois representations. We study in particular the case d=2, and compute the Euler characteristic of the moduli space of n-pointed bi-elliptic genus 2 curves in the Grothendieck group of Hodge structures.
We compute the rational Betti cohomology groups of the coarse moduli spaces of geometrically marked Del Pezzo surfaces of degree three and four as representations of the Weyl groups of the corresponding root systems. The proof uses a blend of methods from point counting over finite fields and techniques from arrangement complements.
We formulate a detailed conjectural Eichler-Shimura type formula for the cohomology of local systems on a Picard modular surface associated to the group of unitary similitudes $\mathrm{GU}(2,1,\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3}))$. The formula is based on counting points over finite fields on curves of genus three which are cyclic triple covers of the projective line. Assuming the conjecture we are able to calculate traces of Hecke operators on spaces of Picard modular forms. We provide ample evidence for the conjectural formula. Along the way we prove new results on characteristic polynomials of Frobenius …
