We study the crossover from the ordinary to the normal surface universality class in the three-dimensional Ising universality class. This crossover is relevant for the behavior of films of binary mixtures near the demixing point and a weak adsorption at one or both surfaces. We perform Monte Carlo simulations of the improved Blume-Capel model on the simple cubic lattice. We consider systems with film geometry, where various boundary conditions are applied. We discuss corrections to scaling that are caused by the surfaces and their relation with the so called extrapolation length. To this end we analyze the behavior of the magnetization profile near the surfaces of films. We obtain an accurate estimate of the renormalization group exponent y_{h_1}=0.7249(6) for the ordinary surface universality class. Next we study the thermodynamic Casimir force in the crossover region from the ordinary to the normal surface universality class. To this end, we compute the Taylor-expansion of the crossover finite size scaling function up to the second order in h_1 around h_1=0, where h_1 is the external field at one of the surfaces. We check the range of applicability of the Taylor-expansion by simulating at finite values of h_1. Finally we study the approach to the strong adsorption limit h_1 \rightarrow \infty. Our results confirm the qualitative picture that emerges from exact calculations for stripes of the two-dimensional Ising model, [D. B. Abraham and A. Maciolek, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 055701 (2010)], mean-field calculations and preliminary Monte Carlo simulations of the 3D Ising model, [T. F. Mohry et al, Phys. Rev. E 81, 061117 (2010)]: For certain choices of h_1 and the thickness of the film, the thermodynamic Casimir force changes sign as a function of the temperature and for certain choices of the temperature and h_1, it also changes sign as a function of the thickness of the film.
In confined systems near a continuous phase transition the long-ranged fluctuations of the corresponding order parameter are subject to boundary conditions. These constraints result in so-called critical Casimir forces acting as effective forces on the confining surfaces. For systems belonging to the Ising bulk universality class corresponding to a scalar order parameter the critical Casimir force is studied for the film geometry in the crossover regime characterized by different surface fields at the two surfaces. The scaling function of the critical Casimir force is calculated within mean fi…
We study the crossover between thermodynamic Casimir forces arising from long-range fluctuations due to Goldstone modes and those arising from critical fluctuations. Both types of forces exist in the low-temperature phase of O$(n)$ symmetric systems for $n>1$ in a $d$-dimensional ${L_\parallel^{d-1} \times L}$ slab geometry with a finite aspect ratio $ρ= L/L_\parallel$. Our finite-size renormalization-group treatment for periodic boundary conditions describes the entire crossover from the Goldstone regime with a nonvanishing constant tail of the finite-size scaling function far below $T_c$ up …
We study the thermodynamic Casimir force for films in the three-dimensional Ising universality class with symmetry breaking boundary conditions. We focus on the effect of corrections to scaling and probe numerically the universality of our results. In particular we check our hypothesis that corrections are well described by an effective thickness L_{0,eff}=L_0+c (L_0+L_s)^{1-ω} +L_s, where c and L_s are system specific parameters and ω\approx 0.8 is the exponent of the leading bulk correction. We simulate the improved Blume-Capel model and the Ising model on the simple cubic lattice. First we …
We consider the dynamics of an isolated quantum many-body system after a sudden change of one control parameter, focusing on the statistics of the work done. We establish a connection between the generating function of the distribution of the work and the partition function of a classical system in a film geometry. Using this connection, we first show that the scaling of the fidelity susceptibilities close to a quantum phase transition can be understood in terms of the critical behavior of the excess entropy and specific heat in the classical model. Remarkably, we show that the statistics of t…
To study the critical Casimir force between chemically structured boundaries immersed in a binary mixture at its demixing transition, we consider a strip of Ising spins subject to alternating fixed spin boundary conditions. The system exhibits a boundary induced phase transition as function of the relative amount of up and down boundary spins. This transition is associated with a sign change of the asymptotic force and a diverging correlation length that sets the scale for the crossover between different universal force amplitudes. Using conformal field theory and a mapping to Majorana fermion…
The finite-size renormalization-group approach for isotropic O$(n)$-symmetric systems introduced previously [V. Dohm, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 110}, 107207 (2013)] is extended to weakly anisotropic O$(n)$-symmetric systems. Our theory is formulated within the $φ^4$ model with lattice anisotropy in a $d$-dimensional block geometry with periodic boundary conditions. It describes the crossover from low- to high-temperature fluctuations including Goldstone-dominated and critical fluctuations for $1\leq n \leq \infty$ in $2<d<4$ dimensions. An exact representation is derived for the large-distance beh…
The one-dimensional pair contact process with diffusion (PCPD), an interacting particle system with diffusion, pair annihilation, and creation by pairs, has defied a consensus about the universality class that it belongs to. An argument by Hinrichsen [H. Hinrichsen, Physica A {\bf 361}, 457 (2006)] claims that freely diffusing particles in the PCPD should play the same role as frozen particles, when it comes to the critical behavior. Therefore, the PCPD is claimed to have the same critical phenomena as a model with infinitely many absorbing states that belongs to the directed percolation (DP) …
We study the kinetic roughening of the single-step (SS) growth model with a tunable parameter $p$ in $1+1$ and $2+1$ dimensions by performing extensive numerical simulations. We show that there exists a very slow crossover from an intermediate regime dominated by the Edwards-Wilkinson class to an asymptotic regime dominated by the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) class for any $p <\frac{1}{2}$. We also identify the crossover time, the nonlinear coupling constant, and some nonuniversal parameters in the KPZ equation as a function $p$. The effective nonuniversal parameters are continuously decreasing w…
The pair contact process with diffusion (PCPD) with modulo 2 conservation (\pcpdt) [$2A\to 4A$, $2A\to 0$] is studied in one dimension, focused on the crossover to other well established universality classes: the directed Ising (DI) and the directed percolation (DP). First, we show that the \pcpdt shares the critical behaviors with the PCPD, both with and without directional bias. Second, the crossover from the \pcpdt to the DI is studied by including a parity-conserving single-particle process ($A \to 3A$). We find the crossover exponent $1/ϕ_1 = 0.57(3)$, which is argued to be identical to t…
For thermal transport in one-dimensional (1D) systems, recent studies have suggested that employing different theoretical models and different numerical simulations under different system's parameter regimes might lead to different universality classes of the scaling exponents. In order to well understand the universality class(es), here we perform a direct dynamics simulation for two archetype 1D oscillator systems with quite different phonon dispersions under various system's parameters and find that there is a crossover between the different universality classes. We show that by varying anh…
We consider the Bose gas on a $d$-dimensional anisotropic lattice employing the imperfect (mean-field) gas as a prototype example. We study the dimensional crossover arising as a result of varying the dispersion relation at finite temperature $T$. We analyze in particular situations where one of the relevant effective dimensionalities is located at or below the lower critical dimension, so that the Bose-Einstein condensate becomes expelled from the system by anisotropically modifying the lattice parameters controlling the kinetic term in the Hamiltonian. We clarify the mechanism governing this…
In the rotational sandpile model, either the clockwise or the anti-clockwise toppling rule is assigned to all the lattice sites. It has all the features of a stochastic sandpile model but belongs to a different universality class than the Manna class. A crossover from rotational to Manna universality class is studied by constructing a random rotational sandpile model and assigning randomly clockwise and anti-clockwise rotational toppling rules to the lattice sites. The steady state and the respective critical behaviour of the present model are found to have a strong and continuous dependence o…
We study through Monte Carlo simulations and finite-size scaling analysis the nonequilibrium phase transitions of the majority-vote model taking place on spatially embedded networks. These structures are built from an underlying regular lattice over which long-range connections are randomly added according to the probability, $P_{ij}\sim{r^{-α}}$, where $r_{ij}$ is the Manhattan distance between nodes $i$ and $j$, and the exponent $α$ is a controlling parameter [J. M. Kleinberg, Nature 406, 845 (2000)]. Our results show that the collective behavior of this system exhibits a continuous order-di…
We study the crossover from low- to high-temperature fluctuations including critical fluctuations in confined isotropic O$(n)$-symmetric systems on the basis of a finite-size renormalization-group approach at fixed dimension $d$ introduced previously [V. Dohm, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 110}, 107207 (2013)]. Our theory is formulated within the $φ^4$ lattice model in a $d$-dimensional block geometry with periodic boundary conditions. We derive the finite-size scaling functions $F^{\text ex}$ and $X$ of the excess free energy density and of the thermodynamic Casimir force, respectively, for $1\leq n …
Thermodynamic Casimir forces of film systems in the O$(n)$ universality classes with Dirichlet boundary conditions are studied below bulk criticality. Substantial progress is achieved in resolving the long-standing problem of describing analytically the pronounced minimum of the scaling function observed experimentally in $^4$He films $(n=2)$ by R. Garcia and M.H.W. Chan, Phys. Rev. Lett. ${\bf 83}, 1187 \;(1999)$ and in Monte Carlo simulations for the three-dimensional Ising model ($n=1$) by O. Vasilyev et al., EPL ${\bf 80}, 60009 \;(2007)$. Our finite-size renormalization-group approach yie…
Two dimensional systems with U(1) symmetry exhibit a peculiar phase, i.e., the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase. In particular situations, the BKT phase exists as an intermediate temperature phase. There have been scenarios for the phase transitions at the two endpoints of the intermediate BKT phase, i.e., the phase transition at the low-temperature endpoint is a BKT transition and that at the high-temperature endpoint is either a BKT transition or a first-order transition. The present study gives a novel scenario, i.e., a second-order transition with a new critical universality and…
We study the crossover scaling behavior of the height-height correlation function in interface depinning in random media. We analyze experimental data from a fracture experiment and simulate an elastic line model with non-linear couplings and disorder. Both exhibit a crossover between two different universality classes. For the experiment, we fit a functional form to the universal crossover scaling function. For the model, we vary the system size and the strength of the non-linear term, and describe the crossover between the two universality classes with a multiparameter scaling function. Our …
We consider the statistical properties of arrival times and balls on first-passage percolation (FPP) $2D$ square lattices with strong disorder in the link-times. A previous work showed a crossover in the weak disorder regime, between Gaussian and Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality, with the crossover length decreasing as the noise amplitude grows. On the other hand, this work presents a very different behavior in the strong-disorder regime. A new crossover length appears below which the model is described by bond-percolation universality class. This characteristic length scale grows with t…
We study critical Casimir forces (CCF) $f_{\mathrm C}$ for films of thickness $L$ which in the three-dimensional bulk belong to the Ising universality class and which are exposed to random surface fields (RSF) on both surfaces. We consider the case that, in the absence of RSF, the surfaces of the film belong to the surface universality class of the so-called ordinary transition. We carry out a finite-size scaling analysis and show that for weak disorder CCF still exhibit scaling, acquiring a random field scaling variable $w$ which is zero for pure systems. We confirm these analytic predictions…
We study universality classes and crossover behaviors in non-Abelian directed sandpile models, in terms of the metastable pattern analysis. The non-Abelian property induces spatially correlated metastable patterns, characterized by the algebraic decay of the grain density along the propagation direction of an avalanche. Crossover scaling behaviors are observed in the grain density due to the interplay between the toppling randomness and the parity of the threshold value. In the presence of such crossovers, we show that the broadness of the grain distribution plays a crucial role in resolving t…
The confinement of long-ranged critical fluctuations in the vicinity of second-order phase transitions in fluids generates critical Casimir forces acting on confining surfaces or among particles immersed in a critical solvent. This is realized in binary liquid mixtures close to their consolute point $T_{c}$ which belong to the universality class of the Ising model. The deviation of the difference of the chemical potentials of the two species of the mixture from its value at criticality corresponds to the bulk magnetic filed of the Ising model. By using Monte Carlo simulations for this latter r…
The exact critical Casimir amplitude is derived for anisotropic systems within the $d=2$ Ising universality class by combining conformal field theory (CFT) with anisotropic $φ^4$ theory. Explicit results are presented for the general anisotropic scalar $φ^4$ model and for the fully anisotropic triangular-lattice Ising model in finite rectangular and infinite strip geometries with periodic boundary conditions (PBC). These results demonstrate the validity of multiparameter universality for confined anisotropic systems and the nonuniversality of the critical Casimir amplitude. We find an unexpect…
We numerically test an experimentally realizable method for the extraction of the critical Casimir force based on its thermodynamic definition as the derivative of the excess free energy with respect to system size. Free energy differences are estimated for different system sizes by integrating the order parameter along an isotherm. The method could be developed for experiments on magnetic systems and could give access to the critical Casimir force for any universality class. By choosing an applied field that opposes magnetic ordering at the boundaries, the Casimir force is found to increase b…
We study the dynamics of head-to-head domain walls separating in-plane domains in a disordered ferromagnetic thin film. The competition between the domain wall surface tension and dipolar interactions induces a crossover between a rough domain wall phase at short length-scales and a large-scale phase where the walls display a zigzag morphology. The two phases are characterized by different critical exponents for Barkhausen avalanche dynamics that are in quantitative agreement with experimental measurements on MnAs thin films.
We study the thermodynamic Casimir force for films with various types of boundary conditions and the bulk universality class of the three-dimensional Ising model. To this end we perform Monte Carlo simulations of the improved Blume-Capel model on the simple cubic lattice. In particular, we employ the exchange or geometric cluster cluster algorithm [J.R. Heringa and H. W. J. Blöte, Phys. Rev. E 57, 4976 (1998)]. In a previous work we demonstrated that this algorithm allows to compute the thermodynamic Casimir force for the plate-sphere geometry efficiently. It turns out that also for the film g…
We consider the decay of the thermodynamic Casimir force in phases with a finite correlation length. For the case of the strip, we use properties of low energy two-dimensional field theory to show that the decay depends on the symmetry properties of the boundary conditions, in distinctive ways that we determine exactly. Features characteristic of the bulk universality class may induce modifications that we also discuss. Symmetry breaking and symmetry preserving boundary conditions exchange their role with respect to the decay of the force when exchanging spontaneously broken with disordered ph…
We study the thermodynamic Casimir force for films in the three-dimensional Ising universality class with symmetry breaking boundary conditions. To this end we simulate the improved Blume-Capel model on the simple cubic lattice. We study the two cases ++, where all spins at the boundary are fixed to +1 and +-, where the spins at one boundary are fixed to +1 while those at the other boundary are fixed to -1. An important issue in analyzing Monte Carlo and experimental data are corrections to scaling. Since we simulate an improved model, leading corrections to scaling, which are proportional to …
We consider systems with slab geometry of finite thickness L that undergo second order phase transitions in the bulk limit and belong to the universality class of O(n)-symmetric systems with short-range interactions. In these systems the critical fluctuations at the bulk critical temperature T_c induce a long-range effective force called the "thermodynamic Casimir force". We describe the systems in the framework of the O(n)-symmetric phi^4-model, restricting us to the large-n limit n->infty. In this limit the physically relevant case of three space dimensions d=3 can be treated analytically in…
Using quasi-exact numerical density-matrix renormalization-group techniques we calculate the critical Casimir force for a two-dimensional (2D) Ising strip with equal strong surface fields, along the thermodynamic paths corresponding to the fixed nonzero bulk field h<>0. Using the Derjaguin approximation we also determine the critical Casimir force and its potential for two discs. We find that varying the temperature along the iso-fields lying between the bulk coexistence and the capillary condensation critical point leads to a dramatic increase of the critical Casimir interactions with a quali…
We report on the growth dynamic of CdTe thin films for deposition temperatures ($T$) in the range of $150\,^{\circ}\mathrm{C}$ to $300\,^{\circ}\mathrm{C}$. A relation between mound evolution and large-wavelength fluctuations at CdTe surface has been established. One finds that short-length scales are dictated by an interplay between the effects of the formation of defects at boundaries of neighbouring grains and a relaxation process which stems from the diffusion and deposition of particles (CdTe molecules) torward these regions. A Kinetic Monte Carlo model corroborates these reasonings. As $…
Recent exact $n\to\infty$ results for critical Casimir forces of the $O(n)$ $ϕ^4$ model on a three-dimensional strip bounded by two planar free surfaces at a distance $L$ are surveyed. This model has long-range order below the bulk critical temperature $T_c$ if $L=\infty$, but remains disordered for all $T>0$ when $L<\infty$. A proper analysis of its scaling behavior near $T_c$ is quite challenging: Besides with bulk, boundary, and finite-size critical behaviors, one must deal with a nontrivial dimensional crossover. The model can be solved exactly in the limit $n\to\infty$ in terms of the eig…
We investigate the influence of the range of interactions in the two-dimensional bond percolation model, by means of Monte Carlo simulations. We locate the phase transitions for several interaction ranges, as expressed by the number $z$ of equivalent neighbors. We also consider the $z \to \infty$ limit, i.e., the complete graph case, where percolation bonds are allowed between each pair of sites, and the model becomes mean-field-like. All investigated models with finite $z$ are found to belong to the short-range universality class. There is no evidence of a tricritical point separating the sho…
An exact statistical mechanical derivation is given of the critical Casimir interactions between two defects in a planar lattice-gas Ising model. Each defect is a group of nearest-neighbor spins with modified coupling constants. Such a system can be regarded as a model of a binary liquid mixture with the molecules confined to a membrane and the defects mimicking protein inclusions embedded into the membrane. As suggested by recent experiments, certain cellular membranes appear to be tuned to the proximity of a critical demixing point belonging to the two-dimensional Ising universality class. T…
We study the crossover between equilibrium and off-equilibrium dynamical universality classes in the Vicsek model near its ordering transition. Starting from the incompressible hydrodynamic theory of Chen et al \cite{chen2015critical}, we show that increasing the activity leads to a renormalization group (RG) crossover between the equilibrium ferromagnetic fixed point, with dynamical critical exponent $z = 2$, and the off-equilibrium active fixed point, with $z = 1.7$ (in $d=3$). We run simulations of the classic Vicsek model in the near-ordering regime and find that critical slowing down inde…
We study the thermodynamic Casimir force between a spherical object and a plate. We consider the bulk universality class of the three-dimensional Ising model, which is relevant for experiments on binary mixtures. To this end, we simulate the improved Blume-Capel model. Following Hucht, we compute the force by integrating energy differences over the inverse temperature. We demonstrate that these energy differences can be computed efficiently by using a particular cluster algorithm. Our numerical results for strongly symmetry breaking boundary conditions are compared with the Derjaguin approxima…
We consider the d-dimensional imperfect (mean-field) Bose gas confined in a slit-like geometry and subject to periodic boundary conditions. Within an exact analytical treatment we first extract the bulk critical properties of the system at Bose-Einstein condensation and identify the bulk universality class to be the one of the classical d-dimensional spherical model. Subsequently we consider finite slit width D and analyze the excess surface free energy and the related Casimir force acting between the slit boundaries. Above the bulk condensation temperature (T>T_c) the Casimir force decays exp…
We calculate the Casimir interaction between two parallel wires and between a wire and a metall plate. The dielectric properties of the objects are described by the plasma, Drude and perfect metal models. We find that at asymptotically large separation interactions involving plasma wires and/or plates are independent of the material properties, but depend on the dc conductivity $σ$ for Drude wires. Counterintuitively, at intermediate separations the interaction involving Drude wires can become independent of $σ$. At smaller separations, we compute the interaction numerically and observe an app…
Recently, it has been proposed that the adsorption transition for a single polymer in dilute solution, modeled by lattice walks in three dimensions, is not universal with respect to inter-monomer interactions. It has also been conjectured that key critical exponents $ϕ$, measuring the growth of the contacts with the surface at the adsorption point, and $1/δ$, which measures the finite-size shift of the critical temperature, are not the same. However, applying standard scaling arguments the two key critical exponents should be identical, thus pointing to a potential breakdown of these standard …
The spatial suppression of order parameter fluctuations in a critical media produces Critical Casimir forces acting on confining surfaces. This scenario is realized in a critical binary mixture near the demixing transition point that corresponds to the second order phase transition of the Ising universality class. Due to these critical interactions similar colloids, immersed in a critical binary mixture near the consolute point, exhibit attraction. The numerical method for computation of the interaction potential between two spherical particles using Monte Carlo simulations for the Ising model…
