Extended de Gennes-Fisher (EdGF) local-functional method has been applied to the thermodynamic Casimir effect {\it away} from the critical point for systems in the Ising universality class confined between parallel plane plates with symmetric boundary conditions (denoted $(ab)=(++)$). Results on the universal scaling functions of the Casimir force $W_{++}(y)$ ($y$ is a temperature-dependant scaling variable) and Gibbs adsorption $\tilde G(y)$ are presented in spatial dimension $d=3$. Also, the mean-field form of the universal scaling function of the Gibbs adsorption $\tilde G(y)$ is derived within the local functional theory. Asymptotic behavior of $W_{++}(y)$ for very large values of the scaling variable $y$ is analyzed in {\it general} dimension $d$.
We study the Casimir effect for the perfect Bose-gase in the slab geometry for various boundary conditions. We show that the grand canonical potential per unit area at the bulk critical chemical potential $μ=0$ has the standard asymptotic form with universal Casimir terms.
We study the Bose-Einstein condensation for a 3-d system of ideal Bose gas which is harmonically trapped along two perpendicular directions and is confined in between two slabs along the other perpendicular direction. We calculate the Casimir force between the two slabs for this system of trapped Bose gas. At finite temperatures this force for thermalized photons in between two plates has a classical expression which is independent of $\hbar$. At finite temperatures the Casimir force for our system depends on $\hbar$. For the calculation of Casimir force we consider only the Dirichlet boundary…
We study the Casimir effect for a 3-d system of ideal Bose gas in a slab geometry with Dirichlet boundary condition. We calculate the temperature($T$) dependence of the Casimir force below and above the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature($T_c$). At $T\le T_c$ the Casimir force vanishes as $[\frac{T}{T_c}]^{3/2}$. For $T\gtrsim T_c$ it weakly depends on temperature. For $T\gg T_c$ it vanishes exponentially. At finite temperatures this force for thermalized photons in between two plates has a classical expression which is independent of $\hbar$. At finite temperatures the Casimir force for o…
We present a field-theoretic study of the critical Casimir force of the Ising universality class in a $d$-dimensional ${L_\parallel^{d-1} \times L}$ slab geometry with a finite aspect ratio $ρ= L/L_\parallel$ above, at, and below $T_c$. The result of a perturbation approach at fixed dimension $d=3$ is presented that describes the dependence on the aspect ratio in the range $ρ\gtrsim 1/4$. Our analytic result for the Casimir force scaling function for $ρ= 1/4$ agrees well with recent Monte Carlo data for the three-dimensional Ising model in slab geometry with periodic boundary conditions above,…
We study the electrostatic Casimir effect and related phenomena in equilibrium statistical mechanics of classical (non-quantum) charged fluids. The prototype model consists of two identical dielectric slabs in empty space (the pure Casimir effect) or in the presence of an electrolyte between the slabs. In the latter case, it is generally believed that the long-ranged Casimir force due to thermal fluctuations in the slabs is screened by the electrolyte into some residual short-ranged force. The screening mechanism is based on a "separation hypothesis": thermal fluctuations of the electrostatic …
In a recent letter, Martin and Zagrebnov [Europhys. Lett., 73 (2006) 1] discussed the thermodynamic Casimir effect for the ideal Bose gas confined in a thin film. We point out that their findings can be expressed in terms of previous general results for the Casimir effect induced by confined critical fluctuations. This highlights the links between the Casimir effect in the contexts of critical phenomena and Bose-Einstein condensation.
Finite size effect in critical systems can be interpreted as universal Casimir forces. Here we compare the Casimir force for free, periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions in the exactly calculable case of the Ising model in one and two dimensions. We employ a new procedure which allows us to calculate the Casimir force with periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions analytically in a transparent manner. Quite interestingly, we find an attractive Casimir force for the case of periodic boundary condition but a repulsive Casimir force for the anti-periodic one.
An exact statistical mechanical derivation is given of the critical Casimir forces for Ising strips with arbitrary surface fields applied to edges. Our results show that the strength as well as the sign of the force can be controled by varying the temperature or the fields. An interpretation of the results is given in terms of a linked cluster expansion. This suggests a systematic approach for deriving the critical Casimir force which can be used in more general models.
The magnetization probability density in d=2 and 3 dimensional Ising models in slab geometry of volume $L_{\parallel}^{d-1} \times L_{\perp}$ is computed through Monte-Carlo simulation at the critical temperature and zero magnetic field. The finite-size scaling of this distribution and its dependence on the system aspect-ratio $ρ=\frac{L_{\perp}}{L_{\parallel}}$ and boundary conditions is discussed. In the limiting case $ρ\to 0$ of a macroscopically large slab ($L_{\parallel} \gg L_{\perp}$) the distribution is found to scale as a Gaussian function for all tested system sizes and boundary cond…
Monte Carlo simulations based on an integration scheme for free energy differences is used to compute critical Casimir forces for three-dimensional Ising films with various boundary fields. We study the scaling behavior of the critical Casimir force, including the scaling variable related to the boundary fields. Finite size corrections to scaling are taken into account. We pay special attention to that range of surface field strengths within which the force changes from repulsive to attractive upon increasing the temperature. Our data are compared with other results available in the literature…
This work is aimed at studying the influence of critical Casimir effects on energetic properties of curved defect lines in the frame of 2D Ising model. Two types of defect curves were investigated. We start with a simple task of globule formation from four-defect line. It was proved that an exothermic reaction of collapse occurs and the dependence of energy release on temperature was observed. Critical Casimir energy of extensive line of constant curvature was also examined. It was shown that its critical Casimir energy is proportional to curvature that leads to the tendency to radius decreasi…
We study the field theoretical model of a scalar field in presence of spacial inhomogeneities in form of one and two finite width mirrors (material slabs). The interaction of the scalar field with the defect is described with position-dependent mass term. For the single layer system we develop a rigorous calculation method and derive explicitly the propagator of the theory, S-matrix elements and the Casimir self-energy of the slab. Detailed investigation of particular limits of self-energy is presented, and connection to know cases is discussed. The calculation method is found applicable to th…
An exact statistical mechanical derivation is given of the critical Casimir interactions between two defects in a planar lattice-gas Ising model. Each defect is a group of nearest-neighbor spins with modified coupling constants. Such a system can be regarded as a model of a binary liquid mixture with the molecules confined to a membrane and the defects mimicking protein inclusions embedded into the membrane. As suggested by recent experiments, certain cellular membranes appear to be tuned to the proximity of a critical demixing point belonging to the two-dimensional Ising universality class. T…
We study systems in which both long-ranged van der Waals and critical Casimir interactions are present. We study the interplay between these forces, as well as the {\it total} force (TF) between a spherical colloid particle and a thick planar slab, and between two spherical colloid particles. We do that using general scaling arguments and mean-field type calculations utilizing the Derjaguin and the surface integration approaches. They both are based on data of the forces between two parallel slabs separated at a distance $L$ from each other, confining the fluctuating fluid medium characterized…
We consider an ideal Bose gas enclosed in a $d$-dimensional slab of thickness $D$. Using the grand canonical ensemble we calculate the variance of the thermal Casimir force acting on the slab's walls. The variance evaluated per unit wall area is shown to decay like $ Δ_{var}/D$ for large $D$. The amplitude $ Δ_{var}$ is a non-universal function of two scaling variables $λ/ ξ$ and $D/ ξ$, where $λ$ is the thermal de Broglie wavelength and $ξ$ is the bulk correlation length. It can be expressed via the bulk pressure, the Casimir force per unit wall area, and its derivative with respect to chemic…
We consider systems with slab geometry of finite thickness L that undergo second order phase transitions in the bulk limit and belong to the universality class of O(n)-symmetric systems with short-range interactions. In these systems the critical fluctuations at the bulk critical temperature T_c induce a long-range effective force called the "thermodynamic Casimir force". We describe the systems in the framework of the O(n)-symmetric phi^4-model, restricting us to the large-n limit n->infty. In this limit the physically relevant case of three space dimensions d=3 can be treated analytically in…
We study the behavior of the critical Casimir force and its interplay with the van der Waals force acting between two parallel slabs separated at a distance $L$ from each other confining a non-polar simple fluid or a binary liquid mixture. The surfaces of the slabs are coated by thin layers exerting strong preference to the liquid phase of the fluid, or one of the components of the mixture. The slabs influence the fluid by long-range competing dispersion potentials. Under such conditions one usually expects {\it attractive} Casimir force governed by universal scaling function to which the disp…
Some properties of an ideal gas of massive bosons in a mean field potential and, confined between two infinite parallel slabs in a d-dimensional configuration space are investigated systematically. Here, one particle density of states approach is employed to study the critical temperature, shift of density, Casimir effects and critical exponents, starting from the evaluation of the grand canonical free energy in d-dimension. We have found that, the shift of density, Casimir force and the critical temperature depend on the space dimensionality. But the Casimir force decays as an inverse power l…
We investigate the competition between the dipolar and the exchange interaction in a ferromagnetic slab with finite thickness and finite width. From an analytical approximate expression for the Ginzburg-Landau effective Hamiltonian, it is shown that, within a self-consistent Hartree approach, a stable modulated configuration arises. We study the transition between the disordered phase and two kinds of modulated configurations, namely, striped and bubble phases. Such transitions are of the first-order kind and the striped phase is shown to have lower energy and a higher spinodal limit than the …
We consider two-dimensional Ising strip bounded by two planar, inhomogeneous walls. The inhomogeneity of each wall is modeled by a magnetic field acting on surface spins. It is equal to $+h_1$ except for a group of $N_1$ sites where it is equal to $-h_1$. The inhomogeneities of the upper and lower wall are shifted with respect to each other by a lateral distance $L$. Using exact diagonalization of the transfer matrix, we study both the lateral and normal critical Casimir forces as well as magnetization profiles for a wide range of temperatures and system parameters. The lateral critical Casimi…
Casimir forces in a critical media are produced by spatial suppression of order parameter fluctuations. In this paper we address the question how fluctuations of a critical media relates the magnitude of critical Casimir interactions. Namely, for the Ising model we express the potential of critical Casimir interactions in terms of Fortuin-Kasteleyn site-bond correlated percolation clusters. These clusters are quantitative representation of fluctuations in the media. New Monte Carlo method for the computation of the Casimir force potential which is based on this relation is proposed. We verify …
The Casimir effect of an ideal Bose gas trapped in a generic power-law potential and confined between two slabs with Dirichlet, Neumann, and periodic boundary conditions is investigated systematically, based on the grand potential of the ideal Bose gas, the Casimir potential and force are calculated. The scaling function is obtained and discussed. The special cases of free and harmonic potentials are also discussed. It is found that when T<Tc (where Tc is the critical temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation), the Casimir force is a power-law decay function; when T>Tc, the Casimir force is an…
The classical $n$-vector $ϕ^4$ model with $O(n)$ symmetrical Hamiltonian ${\cal H}$ is considered in a $\infty^2\times L$ slab geometry bounded by a pair of parallel free surface planes at separation $L$. The temperature-dependent scaling functions of the excess free energy and the thermodynamic Casimir force are computed in the large-$n$ limit for temperatures $T$ at, above, and below the bulk critical temperature $T_{\rm c}$. Their $n=\infty$ limits can be expressed exactly in terms of the eigensystem of a self-consistent one-dimensional Schrödinger equation. This equation is solved by numer…
Using quasi-exact numerical density-matrix renormalization-group techniques we calculate the critical Casimir force for a two-dimensional (2D) Ising strip with equal strong surface fields, along the thermodynamic paths corresponding to the fixed nonzero bulk field h<>0. Using the Derjaguin approximation we also determine the critical Casimir force and its potential for two discs. We find that varying the temperature along the iso-fields lying between the bulk coexistence and the capillary condensation critical point leads to a dramatic increase of the critical Casimir interactions with a quali…
We analyze the lateral critical Casimir force acting between two planar, chemically inhomogeneous walls confining an infinite 2D Ising strip of width $M$. The inhomogeneity of each of the walls has size $N_1$; they are shifted by the distance $L$ along the strip. Using the exact diagonalization of the transfer matrix, we calculate the lateral critical Casimir force and discuss its properties, in particular its scaling close to the 2D bulk critical point, as a function of temperature, surface magnetic field, and the geometric parameters $M$, $N_1$, $L$. We determine the magnetization profiles w…
We study the thermodynamic Casimir force for films in the three-dimensional Ising universality class with symmetry breaking boundary conditions. We focus on the effect of corrections to scaling and probe numerically the universality of our results. In particular we check our hypothesis that corrections are well described by an effective thickness L_{0,eff}=L_0+c (L_0+L_s)^{1-ω} +L_s, where c and L_s are system specific parameters and ω\approx 0.8 is the exponent of the leading bulk correction. We simulate the improved Blume-Capel model and the Ising model on the simple cubic lattice. First we …
We consider the classical O(N)-symmetric models confined in a d-dimensional slab-like geometry and subject to periodic boundary conditions. Applying the one-particle-irreducible variant of functional renormalization group (RG) we compute the critical Casimir forces acting between the slab boundaries. The applied truncation of the exact functional RG flow equation retains interaction vertices of arbitrary order. We evaluate the critical Casimir amplitudes Δ_f(d,N) for continuously varying dimensionality between two and three and N = 1,2. Our findings are in very good agreement with exact result…
We study the thermodynamic Casimir force for films with various types of boundary conditions and the bulk universality class of the three-dimensional Ising model. To this end we perform Monte Carlo simulations of the improved Blume-Capel model on the simple cubic lattice. In particular, we employ the exchange or geometric cluster cluster algorithm [J.R. Heringa and H. W. J. Blöte, Phys. Rev. E 57, 4976 (1998)]. In a previous work we demonstrated that this algorithm allows to compute the thermodynamic Casimir force for the plate-sphere geometry efficiently. It turns out that also for the film g…
In confined systems near a continuous phase transition the long-ranged fluctuations of the corresponding order parameter are subject to boundary conditions. These constraints result in so-called critical Casimir forces acting as effective forces on the confining surfaces. For systems belonging to the Ising bulk universality class corresponding to a scalar order parameter the critical Casimir force is studied for the film geometry in the crossover regime characterized by different surface fields at the two surfaces. The scaling function of the critical Casimir force is calculated within mean fi…
The spatial suppression of order parameter fluctuations in a critical media produces Critical Casimir forces acting on confining surfaces. This scenario is realized in a critical binary mixture near the demixing transition point that corresponds to the second order phase transition of the Ising universality class. Due to these critical interactions similar colloids, immersed in a critical binary mixture near the consolute point, exhibit attraction. The numerical method for computation of the interaction potential between two spherical particles using Monte Carlo simulations for the Ising model…
The confinement of long-ranged critical fluctuations in the vicinity of second-order phase transitions in fluids generates critical Casimir forces acting on confining surfaces or among particles immersed in a critical solvent. This is realized in binary liquid mixtures close to their consolute point $T_{c}$ which belong to the universality class of the Ising model. The deviation of the difference of the chemical potentials of the two species of the mixture from its value at criticality corresponds to the bulk magnetic filed of the Ising model. By using Monte Carlo simulations for this latter r…
The exact critical Casimir amplitude is derived for anisotropic systems within the $d=2$ Ising universality class by combining conformal field theory (CFT) with anisotropic $φ^4$ theory. Explicit results are presented for the general anisotropic scalar $φ^4$ model and for the fully anisotropic triangular-lattice Ising model in finite rectangular and infinite strip geometries with periodic boundary conditions (PBC). These results demonstrate the validity of multiparameter universality for confined anisotropic systems and the nonuniversality of the critical Casimir amplitude. We find an unexpect…
We show that critical Casimir effects can be accessed through direct simulation of a model binary fluid passing through the demixing transition. We work in the semi grand canonical ensemble, in slab geometry, in which the Casimir force appears as the excess of the generalized pressure, $P_{\bot}-nμ$. The excesses of the perpendicular pressure, $P_{\bot}$, and of $nμ$, are individually of much larger amplitude. A critical pressure anisotropy is observed between forces parallel and perpendicular to the confinement direction, which collapses onto a universal scaling function closely related to th…
We study the crossover between thermodynamic Casimir forces arising from long-range fluctuations due to Goldstone modes and those arising from critical fluctuations. Both types of forces exist in the low-temperature phase of O$(n)$ symmetric systems for $n>1$ in a $d$-dimensional ${L_\parallel^{d-1} \times L}$ slab geometry with a finite aspect ratio $ρ= L/L_\parallel$. Our finite-size renormalization-group treatment for periodic boundary conditions describes the entire crossover from the Goldstone regime with a nonvanishing constant tail of the finite-size scaling function far below $T_c$ up …
We study the Casimir effect in the vicinity of a quantum critical point. As a prototypical system we analyze the $d$-dimensional imperfect (mean-field) Bose gas enclosed in a slab of extension $L^{d-1}\times D$ and subject to periodic boundary conditions. The thermodynamic state is adjusted so that $L\ggλ\gg D\ggł_{mic}$, where $λ\sim T^{-1/2}$ is the thermal de Broglie length, and $l_{mic}$ denotes microscopic lengthscales. Our exact analysis indicates that the Casimir force in the above specified regime is generically repulsive and decays either algebraically or exponentially, with a non-uni…
The confinement of critical fluctuations in soft media induces critical Casimir forces acting on the confining surfaces. The temperature and geometry dependences of such forces are characterized by universal scaling functions. A novel approach is presented to determine them for films via Monte Carlo simulations of lattice models. The method is based on an integration scheme of free energy differences. Our results for the Ising and the XY universality class compare favourably with corresponding experimental results for wetting layers of classical binary liquid mixtures and of 4He, respectively.
On the example of the spherical model we study, as a function of the temperature $T$, the behavior of the Casimir force in O(n) systems with a diffuse interface and slab geometry $\infty^{d-1}\times L$, where $2<d<4$ is the dimensionality of the system. We consider a system with nearest-neighbor anisotropic interaction constants $J_\parallel$ parallel to the film and $J_\perp$ across it. The model represents the $n\to\infty$ limit of O(n) models with antiperiodic boundary conditions applied across the finite dimension $L$ of the film. We observe that the Casimir amplitude $Δ_{\rm Casimir}(d|J_…
We study the crossover from low- to high-temperature fluctuations including critical fluctuations in confined isotropic O$(n)$-symmetric systems on the basis of a finite-size renormalization-group approach at fixed dimension $d$ introduced previously [V. Dohm, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 110}, 107207 (2013)]. Our theory is formulated within the $φ^4$ lattice model in a $d$-dimensional block geometry with periodic boundary conditions. We derive the finite-size scaling functions $F^{\text ex}$ and $X$ of the excess free energy density and of the thermodynamic Casimir force, respectively, for $1\leq n …
To study the critical Casimir force between chemically structured boundaries immersed in a binary mixture at its demixing transition, we consider a strip of Ising spins subject to alternating fixed spin boundary conditions. The system exhibits a boundary induced phase transition as function of the relative amount of up and down boundary spins. This transition is associated with a sign change of the asymptotic force and a diverging correlation length that sets the scale for the crossover between different universal force amplitudes. Using conformal field theory and a mapping to Majorana fermion…
Using exact calculations, we elucidate the significance of the surface (bound) states for the thermal Casimir interactions for an Ising strip with a finite width. The surface state arises whenever an imaginary wavenumber mode appears in the spectrum of the transfer matrix, taken in the direction parallel to the edges of the strip. Depending on the boundary conditions, the imaginary modes emerge below or above the bulk critical temperature, or below the wetting temperature of a single surface with surface magnetic field. The bound states are responsible for the strong asymmetry of the Casimir f…
We consider the three-dimensional Ising model in a $L_\perp \times L_\parallel \times L_\parallel$ cuboid geometry with finite aspect ratio $ρ= L_\perp/L_\parallel$ and periodic boundary conditions along all directions. For this model the finite-size scaling functions of the excess free energy and thermodynamic Casimir force are evaluated numerically by means of Monte Carlo simulations. The Monte Carlo results compare well with recent field theoretical results for the Ising universality class at temperatures above and slightly below the bulk critical temperature $T_\mathrm{c}$. Furthermore, th…
We study the thermodynamic Casimir force for films in the three-dimensional Ising universality class with symmetry breaking boundary conditions. To this end we simulate the improved Blume-Capel model on the simple cubic lattice. We study the two cases ++, where all spins at the boundary are fixed to +1 and +-, where the spins at one boundary are fixed to +1 while those at the other boundary are fixed to -1. An important issue in analyzing Monte Carlo and experimental data are corrections to scaling. Since we simulate an improved model, leading corrections to scaling, which are proportional to …
We present a systematic method to calculate the universal scaling functions for the critical Casimir force and the according potential of the two-dimensional Ising model with various boundary conditions. Therefore we start with the dimer representation of the corresponding partition function $Z$ on an $L\times M$ square lattice, wrapped around a torus with aspect ratio $ρ=L/M$. By assuming periodic boundary conditions and translational invariance in at least one direction, we systematically reduce the problem to a $2\times2$ transfer matrix representation. For the torus we first reproduce the …
We study the Casimir effect for a three dimensional system of ideal free massive Bose gas in a slab geometry with Zaremba and anti-periodic boundary conditions. It is found that for these type of boundary conditions the resulting Casimir force is repulsive in nature, in contrast with usual periodic, Dirichlet or Neumann boundary condition where the Casimir force is attractive (Martin P. A. and Zagrebnov V. A., Europhys. Lett., 73 (2006) 15.). Casimir forces in these boundary conditions also maintain a power law decay function below condensation temperature and exponential decay function above …
We study the thermal Casimir effect between two thick slabs composed of plane-parallel layers of random dielectric materials interacting across an intervening homogeneous dielectric. It is found that the effective interaction at long distances is self averaging and its value is given by a that between non-random media with the effective dielectric tensor of the corresponding random media. The behavior at short distances becomes random (sample dependent) and is dominated by the local values of the dielectric constants proximal to each other across the homogeneous slab. These results are extende…
We study the crossover from the ordinary to the normal surface universality class in the three-dimensional Ising universality class. This crossover is relevant for the behavior of films of binary mixtures near the demixing point and a weak adsorption at one or both surfaces. We perform Monte Carlo simulations of the improved Blume-Capel model on the simple cubic lattice. We consider systems with film geometry, where various boundary conditions are applied. We discuss corrections to scaling that are caused by the surfaces and their relation with the so called extrapolation length. To this end w…
Thermodynamic Casimir forces of film systems in the O$(n)$ universality classes with Dirichlet boundary conditions are studied below bulk criticality. Substantial progress is achieved in resolving the long-standing problem of describing analytically the pronounced minimum of the scaling function observed experimentally in $^4$He films $(n=2)$ by R. Garcia and M.H.W. Chan, Phys. Rev. Lett. ${\bf 83}, 1187 \;(1999)$ and in Monte Carlo simulations for the three-dimensional Ising model ($n=1$) by O. Vasilyev et al., EPL ${\bf 80}, 60009 \;(2007)$. Based on the results published recently [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 50, 065201 (2017)], the universal finite-size contributions to the free energy of the square lattice Ising model on the $L\times M$ rectangle, with open boundary conditions in both directions, are calculated exactly in the finite-size scaling limit $L,M\to\infty$, $T\to T_\mathrm{c}$, with fixed temperature scaling variable $x\propto(T/T_\mathrm{c}-1)M$ and fixed aspect ratio $ρ\propto L/M$. We derive exponentially fast converging series for the related Casimir potential and Casimir force scaling functions. At the critical point…
We consider systems confined to a $d$-dimensional slab of macroscopic lateral extension and finite thickness $L$ that undergo a continuous bulk phase transition in the limit $L\to\infty$ and are describable by an O(n) symmetrical Hamiltonian. Periodic boundary conditions are applied across the slab. We study the effects of long-range pair interactions whose potential decays as $b x^{-(d+σ)}$ as $x\to\infty$, with $2<σ<4$ and $2<d+σ\leq 6$, on the Casimir effect at and near the bulk critical temperature $T_{c,\infty}$, for $2<d<4$. For the scaled reduced Casimir force per unit cross-sectional a…
When masless excitations are limited or modified by the presence of material bodies one observes a force atcing between them generally called Casimir force. Such excitations are present in any fluid system close to its true bulk critical point. We derive exact analytical results for both the temperature and external ordering field behavior of the thermodynamic Casimir force within the mean-field Ginzburg-Landau Ising type model of a simple fluid or binary liquid mixture. We investigate the case when under a film geometry the boundaries of the system exhibit strong adsorption onto one of the ph…
Systems described by $n$-component $ϕ^4$ models in a $\infty^{d-1}\times L$ slab geometry of finite thickness $L$ are considered at and above their bulk critical temperature $T_{c,\infty}$. The renormalization-group improved perturbation theory commonly employed to investigate the fluctuation-induced forces (``thermodynamic Casimir effect'') in $d=4-ε$ bulk dimensions is re-examined. It is found to be ill-defined beyond two-loop order because of infrared singularities when the boundary conditions are such that the free propagator in slab geometry involves a zero-energy mode at bulk criticality…

We study the critical behavior of the free energy and the thermodynamic Casimir force in a $L_\parallel^{d-1} \times L$ block geometry in $2<d<4$ dimensions with aspect ratio $ρ=L/L_\parallel$ above, at, and below $T_c$ on the basis of the O$(n)$ symmetric $ϕ^4$ lattice model with periodic boundary conditions (b.c.). We consider a simple-cubic lattice with isotropic short-range interactions. Exact results are derived in the large - $n$ limit describing the geometric crossover from film ($ρ=0$) over cubic $ρ=1$ to cylindrical ($ρ= \infty$) geometries. For $n=1$, three perturbation approaches ar…
After a review of the standard calculation of the Casimir force between two metallic plates at zero and non-zero temperatures, we present the study of microscopic models to determine the large-distance asymptotic force in the high-temperature regime. Casimir's conducting plates are modelized by plasmas of interacting charges at temperature T. The charges are either classical, or quantum-mechanical and coupled to a (classical) radiation field. In these models, the force obtained is twice weaker than that arising from standard treatments neglecting the microscopic charge fluctutations inside the…
We consider the dynamics of an isolated quantum many-body system after a sudden change of one control parameter, focusing on the statistics of the work done. We establish a connection between the generating function of the distribution of the work and the partition function of a classical system in a film geometry. Using this connection, we first show that the scaling of the fidelity susceptibilities close to a quantum phase transition can be understood in terms of the critical behavior of the excess entropy and specific heat in the classical model. Remarkably, we show that the statistics of t…
The Casimir force due to {\it thermal} fluctuations (or pseudo-Casimir force) was previously calculated for the perfect Bose gas in the slab geometry for various boundary conditions. The Casimir pressure due to {\it quantum} fluctuations in a weakly-interacting dilute Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) confined to a parallel plate geometry was recently calculated for Dirichlet boundary conditions. In this paper we calculate the Casimir energy and pressure due to quantum fluctuations in a zero-temperature homogeneous weakly-interacting dilute BEC confined to a parallel plate geometry with periodic …
The partition function of the square lattice Ising model on the rectangle with open boundary conditions in both directions is calculated exactly for arbitrary system size $L\times M$ and temperature. We start with the dimer method of Kasteleyn, McCoy & Wu, construct a highly symmetric block transfer matrix and derive a factorization of the involved determinant, effectively decomposing the free energy of the system into two parts, $F(L,M)=F_\mathrm{strip}(L,M)+F_\mathrm{strip}^\mathrm{res}(L,M)$, where the residual part $F_\mathrm{strip}^\mathrm{res}(L,M)$ contains the nontrivial finite-$L$ con…
Finite-size effects are investigated in the Gaussian model with isotropic and anisotropic short-range interactions in film geometry with nonperiodic boundary conditions (b.c). We have obtained exact results for the free energy and the Casimir force for antiperiodic, Neumann, Dirichlet, and Neumann-Dirichlet mixed b.c. in 1<d<4 dimensions. For the Casimir force, finite-size scaling is found to be valid for all b.c.. For the free energy, finite-size scaling is valid in 1<d<3 and 3<d<4 dimensions for antiperiodic, Neumann, and Dirichlet b.c., but logarithmic deviations from finite-size scaling ex…
