We study the thermal Casimir effect between two thick slabs composed of plane-parallel layers of random dielectric materials interacting across an intervening homogeneous dielectric. It is found that the effective interaction at long distances is self averaging and its value is given by a that between non-random media with the effective dielectric tensor of the corresponding random media. The behavior at short distances becomes random (sample dependent) and is dominated by the local values of the dielectric constants proximal to each other across the homogeneous slab. These results are extended to the regime of intermediate slab separations by using perturbation theory for weak disorder and also by extensive numerical simulations for a number of systems where the dielectric function has a log-normal distribution.
Fluctuations of the thermal or classical component of the van der Waals force between two dielectric slabs, modelled as an ensemble of polarizable dipoles which interact via the usual electrostatic dipole-dipole interaction, are evaluated. In the model the instantaneous force is a deterministic function of the dipole configurations in the slabs and its fluctuations are purely due to dipole fluctuations (no background thermal fluctuations of the electromagnetic field are considered). The average of the force and its variance are computed. The fluctuations of the force exhibit normal thermodynam…
We study the behavior of the critical Casimir force and its interplay with the van der Waals force acting between two parallel slabs separated at a distance $L$ from each other confining a non-polar simple fluid or a binary liquid mixture. The surfaces of the slabs are coated by thin layers exerting strong preference to the liquid phase of the fluid, or one of the components of the mixture. The slabs influence the fluid by long-range competing dispersion potentials. Under such conditions one usually expects {\it attractive} Casimir force governed by universal scaling function to which the disp…
We study systems in which both long-ranged van der Waals and critical Casimir interactions are present. We study the interplay between these forces, as well as the {\it total} force (TF) between a spherical colloid particle and a thick planar slab, and between two spherical colloid particles. We do that using general scaling arguments and mean-field type calculations utilizing the Derjaguin and the surface integration approaches. They both are based on data of the forces between two parallel slabs separated at a distance $L$ from each other, confining the fluctuating fluid medium characterized…
We investigate the effective interaction between two randomly charged but otherwise net-neutral, planar dielectric slabs immersed in an asymmetric Coulomb fluid containing a mixture of mobile monovalent and multivalent ions. The presence of charge disorder on the apposed bounding surfaces of the slabs leads to substantial qualitative changes in the way they interact, as compared with the standard picture provided by the van der Waals and image-induced, ion-depletion interactions. While, the latter predict purely attractive interactions between strictly neutral slabs, we show that the combined …
We study critical point finite-size effects in the case of the susceptibility of a film in which interactions are characterized by a van der Waals-type power law tail. The geometry is appropriate to a slab-like system with two bounding surfaces. Boundary conditions are consistent with surfaces that both prefer the same phase in the low temperature, or broken symmetry, state. We take into account both interactions within the system and interactions between the constituents of the system and the material surrounding it. Specific predictions are made with respect to the behavior of a $^3$He and $…
We consider systems confined to a $d$-dimensional slab of macroscopic lateral extension and finite thickness $L$ that undergo a continuous bulk phase transition in the limit $L\to\infty$ and are describable by an O(n) symmetrical Hamiltonian. Periodic boundary conditions are applied across the slab. We study the effects of long-range pair interactions whose potential decays as $b x^{-(d+σ)}$ as $x\to\infty$, with $2<σ<4$ and $2<d+σ\leq 6$, on the Casimir effect at and near the bulk critical temperature $T_{c,\infty}$, for $2<d<4$. For the scaled reduced Casimir force per unit cross-sectional a…
Monopolar charge disorder effects are studied in the context of fluctuation-induced interactions between neutral dielectric slabs. It is shown that quenched bulk charge disorder gives rise to an additive contribution to the net interaction force which decays as the inverse distance between the slabs and may thus completely mask the standard Casimir--van der Waals force at large separations. By contrast, annealed (bulk or surface) charge disorder leads to a net interaction force whose large-distance behavior coincides with the universal Casimir force between perfect conductors, which scales as …
We extend the Van der Waals equation of state to a universal form and find that the van der Waals equation of state is a special condition of this form. Then a good form of the equation of state for a balanced liquid-gas coexistence canonical argon-like system is given. The localization of this universal form concludes the paper.
The van-der-Waals version of the second virial coefficient is not far from being exact if the model parameters are appropriately chosen. It is shown how the van-der-Waals resemblance originates from the interplay of thermal averaging and superposition of scattering phase shift contributions. The derivation of the two parameters from the quantum virial coefficient reveals a fermion-boson symmetry in non-ideal quantum gases. Numerical details are worked out for the Helium quantum gases.
A short review of the problems which arise in the generalization of the Lifshitz theory of van der Waals force in the case of forces inside dielectric media is presented, together with some historical remarks. General properties of the stress tensor of equilibrium electromagnetic field in media are discussed, and the importance of the conditions of mechanical equilibrium is stressed. The physical meaning of the repulsive van der Waals interaction between bodies immersed in a liquid is discussed.
There has been many studies on gases which obeys Van der Waal's equation of state. However there is no specific and direct studies of Van der Waal's gas which undergoes adiabatic processes are available in the undergraduate text books and also in literature. In an adiabatic process there is no heat energy exchange between the system and its surroundings. In this article, we find that the Van der Waal's equation for the adiabatic process as $\left(P+\frac{n^2a}{V^2}\right) \left(V-nb\right)^Γ=\mbox{constant}$, where $P$ is the pressure, $V$ is the volume, $n$ is the number of moles of the Van d…
We consider thermodynamics of the van der Waals fluid of quantum systems. We derive general relations of thermodynamic functions and parameters of any ideal gas and the corresponding van der Waals fluid. This provides unambiguous generalization of the classical van der Waals theory to quantum statistical systems. As an example, we apply the van der Waals fluid with fermi statistics to characterize the liquid-gas critical point in nuclear matter. We also introduce the Bose-Einstein condensation in the relativistic van der Waals boson gas, and argue, that it exhibits two-phase structure separate…
The equation of state is investigated for an Ising-like model in the framework of collective variables method. The peculiar feature of the theory is that a non-classical van der Waals loop is extracted. The results are compared with the ones of a trigonometric parametric model in terms of normalized magnetization, \tilde{M}, and field, \tilde{H}.
We present a new type of the Hamiltonian replica-exchange method, in which not temperatures but the van der Waals radius parameter is exchanged. By decreasing the van der Waals radii that control spatial sizes of atoms, this Hamiltonian replica-exchange method overcomes the steric restrictions and energy barriers. Furthermore, the simulation based on this method escapes from the local-minimum free-energy states and realizes effective sampling in the conformational space. We applied this method to an alanine dipeptide in aqueous solution and showed the effectiveness of the method by comparing t…
Working at the Lifshitz level, we investigate the van der Waals interactions across a series of layers with a periodic motif. We derive the complete form of the van der Waals interaction as an explicit function of the number of periodic layers. We then compare our result with an approximation based on an anisotropic-continuum representation of the stratified medium. Satisfactory agreement between discrete-layer and continuum models is reached only for thicknesses of ten or more layers.
We derive a first--principles method of determining the van der Waals or Casimir pressure in a dissipative and dispersive planar multilayered system by calculating the Maxwell stress tensor in a fictitious layer of vacuum, that is eventually made to vanish, introduced in the structure. This is illustrated by calculating the van der Waals pressure in a thin film with dissipative properties embedded between two semi--infinite media.
A version of the Green's functions theory of the Van der Waals forces which can be conveniently used in the presence of spatial dispersion is presented. The theory is based on the fluctuation-dissipation theorem and is valid for interacting bodies, separated by vacuum. Objections against theories acounting for the spatial dispersion are discussed.
In our study we investigate the behaviour of the net force (NF) emerging between an ellipsoidal particle and a thick plate (slab), when the interaction takes place in a near critical fluid medium with account for the omnipresent van der Waals forces (vdWF). Here we consider the case of complete wetting of the objects surfaces by the medium, due to strong adsorbing local surface potentials, exerted by thin solid coating films. The influence of the bulk inner regions of the particle and the slab on the constituents of the fluid results in long-ranged competing dispersion potentials. As a consequ…
The equations for Widom lines for the supercritical van der Waals fluid were considered in the paper J. Chem. Phys. 135, 084503 (2011). But the equations for the speed of sound and its special Widom line were incorrect. The correct equations are obtained.
We show that in anisotropic or layered superconductors impurities induce a van der Waals attraction between flux lines. This attraction together with the disorder induced repulsion may change the low B - low T phase diagram significantly from that of the pure thermal case considered recently by Blatter and Geshkenbein [Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 4958 (1996)].
We study the van der Waals frictional drag force induced by liquid flow in low-dimensional systems (2D and 1D electron systems, and 2D and 1D channels with liquid). We find that for both 1D and 2D systems, the frictional drag force induced by liquid flow may be several orders of magnitude larger than the frictional drag induced by electronic current.
In systems composed of water and hydrocarbons Van der Waals-interactions are dominated by the non-retarded, classical (Keesom) part of the Lifshitz-interaction; the interaction is screened by salt and extends over mesoscopic distances of the order of the size of the (micellar) constituents of complex fluids. We show that these interactions are included intrinsically in a recently introduced local Monte Carlo algorithm for simulating electrostatic interactions between charges in the presence of non-homogeneous dielectric media.
