We consider the Bose gas on a $d$-dimensional anisotropic lattice employing the imperfect (mean-field) gas as a prototype example. We study the dimensional crossover arising as a result of varying the dispersion relation at finite temperature $T$. We analyze in particular situations where one of the relevant effective dimensionalities is located at or below the lower critical dimension, so that the Bose-Einstein condensate becomes expelled from the system by anisotropically modifying the lattice parameters controlling the kinetic term in the Hamiltonian. We clarify the mechanism governing this phenomenon. Subsequently we study the thermodynamic Casimir effect occurring in this system. We compute the exact profile of the scaling function for the Casimir energy. As an effect of strongly anisotropic scale invariance, the Casimir force below or at the critical temperature $T_c$ may be repulsive even for periodic boundary conditions. The corresponding Casimir amplitude is universal only in a restricted sense, and the power law governing the decay of the Casimir interaction becomes modified. We also demonstrate that, under certain circumstances, the scaling function is constant for suffciently large values of the scaling variable, and in consequence is not an analytical function. At $T > T_c$ the Casimir-like interactions reflect the structure of the correlation function, and, for certain orientations of the confining walls, show exponentially damped oscillatory behavior so that the corresponding force is attractive or repulsive depending on the distance.
We have presented an analytic theory for the Casimir force on a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) which is confined between two parallel plates. We have considered Dirichlet boundary conditions for the condensate wave function as well as for the phonon field. We have shown that, the condensate wave function (which obeys the Gross-Pitaevskii equation) is responsible for the mean field part of Casimir force, which usually dominates over the quantum (fluctuations) part of the Casimir force.
We present a study of the Casimir effect in an imperfect (mean-field) Bose gas contained between two infinite parallel plane walls. The derivation of the Casimir force follows from the calculation of the excess grand canonical free energy density under periodic, Dirichlet, and Neumann boundary conditions with the use of the steepest descent method. In the one-phase region the force decays exponentially fast when distance $D$ between the walls tends to infinity. When Bose-Einstein condensation point is approached the decay length in the exponential law diverges with critical exponent $ν_{IMP}=1…
The relation between the bulk correlation length and the decay length of thermodynamic Casimir forces is investigated microscopically in two three-dimensional systems undergoing Bose-Einstein condensation: the perfect Bose gas and the imperfect mean-field Bose gas. For each of these systems, both lengths diverge upon approaching the corresponding condensation point from the one-phase side, and are proportional to each other. We determine the proportionality factors and discuss their dependence on the boundary conditions. The values of the corresponding critical exponents for the decay length a…
Recently it has been suggested that relativistic Bose gas of some type can be playing role in issues like dark matter, dark energy, and in some cosmological problems. In the current article we investigate one known exactly solvable model of three-dimensional statistical-mechanical model of relativistic Bose gas that takes into account the existence of both particles and antiparticles. We derive exact expressions for the behavior of the Casimir force for the system subjected to film geometry under periodic boundary conditions. We show that the Casimir force between the plates is attractive, mon…
We analyze the thermodynamic Casimir effect occurring in a gas of non-interacting bosons confined by two parallel walls with a strongly anisotropic dispersion inherited from an underlying lattice. In the direction perpendicular to the confining walls the standard quadratic dispersion is replaced by the term $|{\bf p}|^α$ with $α\geq 2$ treated as a parameter. We derive a closed, analytical expression for the Casimir force depending on the dimensionality $d$ and the exponent $α$, and analyze it for thermodynamic states in which the Bose-Einstein condensate is present. For $α\in\{4,6,8,\dots\}$ …
We study the Casimir effect for a 3-d system of ideal Bose gas in a slab geometry with Dirichlet boundary condition. We calculate the temperature($T$) dependence of the Casimir force below and above the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature($T_c$). At $T\le T_c$ the Casimir force vanishes as $[\frac{T}{T_c}]^{3/2}$. For $T\gtrsim T_c$ it weakly depends on temperature. For $T\gg T_c$ it vanishes exponentially. At finite temperatures this force for thermalized photons in between two plates has a classical expression which is independent of $\hbar$. At finite temperatures the Casimir force for o…
We study the Bose-Einstein condensation for a 3-d system of ideal Bose gas which is harmonically trapped along two perpendicular directions and is confined in between two slabs along the other perpendicular direction. We calculate the Casimir force between the two slabs for this system of trapped Bose gas. At finite temperatures this force for thermalized photons in between two plates has a classical expression which is independent of $\hbar$. At finite temperatures the Casimir force for our system depends on $\hbar$. For the calculation of Casimir force we consider only the Dirichlet boundary…
The Casimir effect of an ideal Bose gas trapped in a generic power-law potential and confined between two slabs with Dirichlet, Neumann, and periodic boundary conditions is investigated systematically, based on the grand potential of the ideal Bose gas, the Casimir potential and force are calculated. The scaling function is obtained and discussed. The special cases of free and harmonic potentials are also discussed. It is found that when T<Tc (where Tc is the critical temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation), the Casimir force is a power-law decay function; when T>Tc, the Casimir force is an…
In a recent letter, Martin and Zagrebnov [Europhys. Lett., 73 (2006) 1] discussed the thermodynamic Casimir effect for the ideal Bose gas confined in a thin film. We point out that their findings can be expressed in terms of previous general results for the Casimir effect induced by confined critical fluctuations. This highlights the links between the Casimir effect in the contexts of critical phenomena and Bose-Einstein condensation.
In confined systems near a continuous phase transition the long-ranged fluctuations of the corresponding order parameter are subject to boundary conditions. These constraints result in so-called critical Casimir forces acting as effective forces on the confining surfaces. For systems belonging to the Ising bulk universality class corresponding to a scalar order parameter the critical Casimir force is studied for the film geometry in the crossover regime characterized by different surface fields at the two surfaces. The scaling function of the critical Casimir force is calculated within mean fi…
We study the Casimir effect for the perfect Bose-gase in the slab geometry for various boundary conditions. We show that the grand canonical potential per unit area at the bulk critical chemical potential $μ=0$ has the standard asymptotic form with universal Casimir terms.
We explore Casimir effect on an interacting Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) inside a cylindrical tube. The Casimir force for the confined BEC comprises of (i) a mean-field part arising from the spatial inhomogeneity of the condensate order parameter, and (ii) a quantum fluctuation part arising from the confinement of Bogoliubov excitations in the condensate. Our analytical result predicts Casimir force on a cylindrical shallow of $^4$He well below the $λ$-point, and can be tested experimentally.
We study the crossover between thermodynamic Casimir forces arising from long-range fluctuations due to Goldstone modes and those arising from critical fluctuations. Both types of forces exist in the low-temperature phase of O$(n)$ symmetric systems for $n>1$ in a $d$-dimensional ${L_\parallel^{d-1} \times L}$ slab geometry with a finite aspect ratio $ρ= L/L_\parallel$. Our finite-size renormalization-group treatment for periodic boundary conditions describes the entire crossover from the Goldstone regime with a nonvanishing constant tail of the finite-size scaling function far below $T_c$ up …
In this study, we have derived close form of the Casimir force for the non-interacting ideal Bose gas between two slabs in harmonic-optical lattice potential by using Ketterle and van Druten approximation. We find that Bose-Einstein condensation temperature $T_{c}$ is a critical point for different physical behavior of the Casimir force. We have shown that Casimir force of confined Bose gas in the presence of the harmonic-optical potential decays with inversely proportional to $d^{5}$ when $T\leq T_{c}$. However, in the case of $T>T_{c}$, it decays exponentially depends on separation $d$ of th…
Some properties of an ideal gas of massive bosons in a mean field potential and, confined between two infinite parallel slabs in a d-dimensional configuration space are investigated systematically. Here, one particle density of states approach is employed to study the critical temperature, shift of density, Casimir effects and critical exponents, starting from the evaluation of the grand canonical free energy in d-dimension. We have found that, the shift of density, Casimir force and the critical temperature depend on the space dimensionality. But the Casimir force decays as an inverse power l…
In this study, we consider motion of the massive and charged Bose gas trapped in electric and magnetic fields between two parallel plates in the $x-y$ plane that are separated by a distance $d$ in the $z$ direction. We derive analytical expression of the grand canonical potential of the quantum particles by using of Ketterle and van Druten approximation. By evaluating canonical potential, we obtain Casimir potential and force at the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature $T_{c}$. We also show that Casimir force oscillates depends on distance $d$ for fixed parameters.
The shift of density of Bose gas due to the mean field potential (MFP) and the Casimir effect is systematically investigated in the $d$-dimensional configuration space from the point of thermodynamic consideration. We show that, for $d=3$, the shift of density arises completely due to the Casimir effect and, the MFP remains totally ineffective regardless of the state, condensate or non-condensate. But for dimension $d>3$ the MFP plays an active role in shifting the density of Bose gas along with the Casimir interaction. The sign of density shift becomes positive in the present case. So, the co…
We consider an ideal Bose gas enclosed in a $d$-dimensional slab of thickness $D$. Using the grand canonical ensemble we calculate the variance of the thermal Casimir force acting on the slab's walls. The variance evaluated per unit wall area is shown to decay like $ Δ_{var}/D$ for large $D$. The amplitude $ Δ_{var}$ is a non-universal function of two scaling variables $λ/ ξ$ and $D/ ξ$, where $λ$ is the thermal de Broglie wavelength and $ξ$ is the bulk correlation length. It can be expressed via the bulk pressure, the Casimir force per unit wall area, and its derivative with respect to chemic…
We consider the d-dimensional imperfect (mean-field) Bose gas confined in a slit-like geometry and subject to periodic boundary conditions. Within an exact analytical treatment we first extract the bulk critical properties of the system at Bose-Einstein condensation and identify the bulk universality class to be the one of the classical d-dimensional spherical model. Subsequently we consider finite slit width D and analyze the excess surface free energy and the related Casimir force acting between the slit boundaries. Above the bulk condensation temperature (T>T_c) the Casimir force decays exp…
We analyze the Casimir forces for an ideal Bose gas enclosed between two infinite parallel walls separated by the distance D. The walls are characterized by the Dirichlet boundary conditions. We show that if the thermodynamic state with Bose-Einstein condensate present is correctly approached along the path pertinent to the Dirichlet b.c. then the leading term describing the large-distance decay of thermal Casimir force between the walls is 1/D^2 with a non-universal amplitude. The next order correction is lnD/D^3. These observations remain in contrast with the decay law for both the periodic …
We study the Casimir effect for a three dimensional system of ideal free massive Bose gas in a slab geometry with Zaremba and anti-periodic boundary conditions. It is found that for these type of boundary conditions the resulting Casimir force is repulsive in nature, in contrast with usual periodic, Dirichlet or Neumann boundary condition where the Casimir force is attractive (Martin P. A. and Zagrebnov V. A., Europhys. Lett., 73 (2006) 15.). Casimir forces in these boundary conditions also maintain a power law decay function below condensation temperature and exponential decay function above …
The Casimir force due to {\it thermal} fluctuations (or pseudo-Casimir force) was previously calculated for the perfect Bose gas in the slab geometry for various boundary conditions. The Casimir pressure due to {\it quantum} fluctuations in a weakly-interacting dilute Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) confined to a parallel plate geometry was recently calculated for Dirichlet boundary conditions. In this paper we calculate the Casimir energy and pressure due to quantum fluctuations in a zero-temperature homogeneous weakly-interacting dilute BEC confined to a parallel plate geometry with periodic …
Systems described by an O(n) symmetrical $ϕ^4$ Hamiltonian are considered in a $d$-dimensional film geometry at their bulk critical points. The critical Casimir forces between the film's boundary planes $\mathfrak{B}_j, j=1,2$, are investigated as functions of film thickness $L$ for generic symmetry-preserving boundary conditions $\partial_n\bmϕ=\mathring{c}_j\bmϕ$. The $L$-dependent part of the reduced excess free energy per cross-sectional area takes the scaling form $f_{\text{res}}\approx D(c_1L^{Φ/ν},c_2L^{Φ/ν})/L^{d-1}$ when $d<4$, where $c_i$ are scaling fields associated with the variab…
We calculate a force due to zero-temperature quantum fluctuations on a stationary object in a moving superfluid flow. We model the object by a localized potential varying only in the flow direction and model the flow by a three-dimensional weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate at zero temperature. We show that this force exists for any arbitrarily small flow velocity and discuss the implications for the stability of superfluid flow.
We study the crossover from the ordinary to the normal surface universality class in the three-dimensional Ising universality class. This crossover is relevant for the behavior of films of binary mixtures near the demixing point and a weak adsorption at one or both surfaces. We perform Monte Carlo simulations of the improved Blume-Capel model on the simple cubic lattice. We consider systems with film geometry, where various boundary conditions are applied. We discuss corrections to scaling that are caused by the surfaces and their relation with the so called extrapolation length. To this end w…
To study the critical Casimir force between chemically structured boundaries immersed in a binary mixture at its demixing transition, we consider a strip of Ising spins subject to alternating fixed spin boundary conditions. The system exhibits a boundary induced phase transition as function of the relative amount of up and down boundary spins. This transition is associated with a sign change of the asymptotic force and a diverging correlation length that sets the scale for the crossover between different universal force amplitudes. Using conformal field theory and a mapping to Majorana fermion…
The finite-size renormalization-group approach for isotropic O$(n)$-symmetric systems introduced previously [V. Dohm, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 110}, 107207 (2013)] is extended to weakly anisotropic O$(n)$-symmetric systems. Our theory is formulated within the $φ^4$ model with lattice anisotropy in a $d$-dimensional block geometry with periodic boundary conditions. It describes the crossover from low- to high-temperature fluctuations including Goldstone-dominated and critical fluctuations for $1\leq n \leq \infty$ in $2<d<4$ dimensions. An exact representation is derived for the large-distance beh…
We calculate the effect of the interaction between an optically active material and a Bose-Einstein condensate on the collective oscillations of the condensate. We provide explicit expressions for the frequency shift of the center of mass oscillation in terms of the potential generated by the substrate and of the density profile of the gas. The form of the potential is discussed in details and various regimes (van der Waals-London, Casimir-Polder and thermal regimes) are identified as a function of the distance of atoms from the surface. Numerical results for the frequency shifts are given for…
We show that in an atomic Fermi gas near a Feshbach resonance the crossover between a Bose-Einstein condensate of diatomic molecules and a Bose-Einstein condensate of Cooper pairs occurs at positive detuning, i.e., when the molecular energy level lies in the two-atom continuum. We determine the crossover temperature as a function of the applied magnetic field and find excellent agreement with the experiment of Regal et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 040403 (2004)] that has recently observed this crossover temperature.
We study the Casimir effect in the vicinity of a quantum critical point. As a prototypical system we analyze the $d$-dimensional imperfect (mean-field) Bose gas enclosed in a slab of extension $L^{d-1}\times D$ and subject to periodic boundary conditions. The thermodynamic state is adjusted so that $L\ggλ\gg D\ggł_{mic}$, where $λ\sim T^{-1/2}$ is the thermal de Broglie length, and $l_{mic}$ denotes microscopic lengthscales. Our exact analysis indicates that the Casimir force in the above specified regime is generically repulsive and decays either algebraically or exponentially, with a non-uni…
We develop a simple analytical model based on a variational method to explain the properties of trapped cylindrically symmetric Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) of varying degrees of anisotropy well into regimes of effective one dimension (1D) and effective two dimension (2D). Our results are accurate in regimes where the Thomas-Fermi approximation breaks down and they are shown to be in agreement with recent experimental data.
We discuss the transition from a fully decoherent to a (quasi-)condensate regime in a harmonically trapped weakly interacting 1D Bose gas. By using analytic approaches and verifying them against exact numerical solutions, we find a characteristic crossover temperature and crossover atom number that depend on the interaction strength and the trap frequency. We then identify the conditions for observing either an interaction-induced crossover scenario or else a finite-size Bose-Einstein condensation phenomenon characteristic of an \textit{ideal} trapped 1D gas.
We study the crossover from low- to high-temperature fluctuations including critical fluctuations in confined isotropic O$(n)$-symmetric systems on the basis of a finite-size renormalization-group approach at fixed dimension $d$ introduced previously [V. Dohm, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 110}, 107207 (2013)]. Our theory is formulated within the $φ^4$ lattice model in a $d$-dimensional block geometry with periodic boundary conditions. We derive the finite-size scaling functions $F^{\text ex}$ and $X$ of the excess free energy density and of the thermodynamic Casimir force, respectively, for $1\leq n …
The properties of a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a prolate cylindrically symmetric trap are explored both analytically and numerically. As the rotation frequency increases, an ever greater number of vortices are energetically favored. Though the cloud anisotropy and moment of inertia approach those of a classical fluid at high frequencies, the observed vortex density is consistently lower than the solid-body estimate. Furthermore, the vortices are found to arrange themselves in highly regular triangular arrays, with little distortion even near the condensate surface. These res…
We study an ideal Bose gas of N atoms contained in a box formed by two identical planar and parallel surfaces S, enclosed by a mantle of height a perpendicular to them. Calling r0 the mean atomic distance, we assume S >> r0^2 while a may be comparable to r0. In the bidimensional limit (a/r0 << 1) we find a macroscopic number of atoms in the condensate at temperatures T ~1/log(N); therefore, condensation cannot be described in terms of intensive quantities; in addition, it occurs at temperatures not too low in comparison to the tridimensional case. When condensation is present we also find a ma…
Universal aspects of the thermodynamic Casimir effect in wetting films of 3He-4He mixtures near their bulk tricritical point are studied within suitable models serving as representatives of the corresponding universality class. The effective forces between the boundaries of such films arising from the confinement are calculated along isotherms at several fixed concentrations of 3He. Nonsymmetric boundary conditions impose nontrivial concentration profiles leading to repulsive Casimir forces which exhibit a rich behavior of the crossover between the tricritical point and the line of critical po…
We study the ground state of the attractive one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model, and in particular the nature of the crossover between the weak interaction and strong interaction regimes for finite system sizes. Indicator properties like the gap between the ground and first excited energy levels, and the incremental ground-state wavefunction overlaps are used to locate different regimes. Using mean-field theory we predict that there are two distinct crossovers connected to spontaneous symmetry breaking of the ground state. The first crossover arises in an analysis valid for large L with finite …
We reconcile a long-standing controversy regarding the transition temperature of the Bose-Einstein condensation in a dilute interacting Bose gas, by showing that there is a crossover between ideal gas and interacting gas. The former corresponds to a Knudsen (or collisionless) regime, in which the mean-free-path is much larger than the system dimension, while the latter corresponds to the opposite hydrodynamic regime. The deviation of the transition temperature from that of the non-interacting gas is proportional to the square root of a in the Knudsen regime, and to a in the hydrodynamic regime…
We discuss a force arising from zero-temperature quantum fluctuations in a weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). We argue that there is a drag force on an object moving at speeds well below Landau's critical velocity, and motivate our argument by an analogy to the Casimir force in an electromagnetic vacuum. We sketch the calculation of this force for an object described by a general potential. We comment about the relevance of our results to the stability of superfluid flow, arguing that this effect is consistent with the observation of persistent currents and that this effect int…
Recent exact $n\to\infty$ results for critical Casimir forces of the $O(n)$ $ϕ^4$ model on a three-dimensional strip bounded by two planar free surfaces at a distance $L$ are surveyed. This model has long-range order below the bulk critical temperature $T_c$ if $L=\infty$, but remains disordered for all $T>0$ when $L<\infty$. A proper analysis of its scaling behavior near $T_c$ is quite challenging: Besides with bulk, boundary, and finite-size critical behaviors, one must deal with a nontrivial dimensional crossover. The model can be solved exactly in the limit $n\to\infty$ in terms of the eig…
We discuss an integrable model of interacting Fermions in one dimension, that allows an exact description of the crossover from a BCS- to a Bose-like superfluid. This model bridges the Gaudin-Yang model of attractive spin 1/2 Fermions to the Lieb-Liniger model of repulsive Bosons. Using a geometric resonance in the one-dimensional scattering length, the inverse coupling constant varies from minus infinity to plus infinity while the system evolves from a BCS-like state through a Tonks gas to a weakly interacting Bose gas of dimers. We study the ground state energy, the elementary density and sp…
We study the geometry dependence of the Casimir energy for deformed metal plates by a path integral quantization of the electromagnetic field. For the first time, we give a complete analytical result for the deformation induced change in Casimir energy δ\cal E in an experimentally testable, nontrivial geometry, consisting of a flat and a corrugated plate. Our results show an interesting crossover for δ\cal E as a function of the ratio of the mean plate distance H, to the corrugation length λ: For λ\ll H we find a {\em slower} decay \sim H^{-4}, compared to the H^{-5} behavior predicted by the …
We investigate the Bose-Einstein condensation of Fermionic pairs in a uniform two-component Fermi gas obtaining an explicit formula for the condensate density as a function of the chemical potential and the energy gap. We analyze the condensate fraction in the crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) state of weakly-interacting Cooper pairs to the Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) of molecular dimers. By using the local density approximation we study confined Fermi vapors of alkali-metal atoms for which there is experimental evidence of condensation also on the BCS side of the Feshbach …
We study the critical Casimir force for a film geometry in the Ising universality class. We employ a homogeneous adsorption preference on one of the confining surfaces, while the opposing surface exhibits quenched random disorder, leading to a random local adsorption preference. Disorder is characterized by a parameter p, which measures, on average, the portion of the surface that prefers one component, so that p=0, 1 correspond to homogeneous adsorption preference. By means of Monte Carlo simulations of an improved Hamiltonian and finite-size scaling analysis, we determine the critical Casimi…
Systems described by an O(n) symmetrical $ϕ^4$ Hamiltonian are considered in a $d$-dimensional film geometry at their bulk critical points. A detailed renormalization-group (RG) study of the critical Casimir forces induced between the film's boundary planes by thermal fluctuations is presented for the case where the O(n) symmetry remains unbroken by the surfaces. The boundary planes are assumed to cause short-ranged disturbances of the interactions that can be modelled by standard surface contributions $\propto \bmϕ^2$ corresponding to subcritical or critical enhancement of the surface interac…
