We study initial-boundary value problems for the Lagrangian averaged alpha models for the equations of motion for the corotational Maxwell and inviscid fluids in 2D and 3D. We show existence of (global in time) dissipative solutions to these problems. We also discuss the idea of dissipative solution in an abstract Hilbert space framework.
A basic model for describing plasma dynamics is given by the Euler-Maxwell system, in which compressible ion and electron fluids interact with their own self-consistent electromagnetic field. In this paper we consider the "one-fluid" Euler--Maxwell model for electrons, in 2 spatial dimensions, and prove global stability of a constant neutral background.
The fundamental "two-fluid" model for describing plasma dynamics is given by the Euler-Maxwell system, in which compressible ion and electron fluids interact with their own self-consistent electromagnetic field. We prove global stability of a constant neutral background, in the sense that irrotational, smooth and localized perturbations of a constant background with small amplitude lead to global smooth solutions in three space dimensions for the Euler-Maxwell system. Our construction applies equally well to other plasma models such as the Euler-Poisson system for two-fluids and a relativistic…
The non-isentropic compressible Euler-Maxwell system is investigated in $R^3$ in the present paper, and the $L^q$ time decay rate for the global smooth solution is established. It is shown that the density and temperature of electron converge to the equilibrium states at the same rate $(1+t)^{-11/4}$ in $L^q$ norm.
In this paper, we consider the compressible Euler-Maxwell equations arising in semiconductor physics, which take the form of Euler equations for the conservation laws of mass density and current density for electrons, coupled to Maxwell's equations for self-consistent electromagnetic field. We study the global well-posedness in critical spaces and the limit to zero of some physical parameters in the scaled Euler-Maxwell equations. More precisely, using high- and low-frequency decomposition methods, we first construct uniform (global) classical solutions (around constant equilibrium) to the Cau…
The aim of this manuscript is to study the influence of the vorticity on the existence time in fluid systems for which global smoothness and decay is known in the case of small irrotational data. We focus on two examples: the Euler-Korteweg system and the two-fluid Euler Maxwell system. We prove that the lower bound of the lifespan of these systems is no less than the inverse of the $H^s$ $(s>5/2)$ norm of the rotational part of the initial velocity. Our approach is based on energy estimates and the fast time decay results of global solutions to these systems with small irrotational initial da…
In this paper we investigate the zero dielectric constant limit to the non-isentropic compressible Euler-Maxwell system. We justify this singular limit rigorously in the framework of smooth solutions and obtain the non-isentropic compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations as the dielectric constant tends to zero.
The bipolar non-isentropic compressible Euler-Maxwell system is investigated in $R^3$ in the present paper, and the $L^q$ time decay rate for the global smooth solution is established. It is shown that the total densities, total temperatures and magnetic field of two carriers converge to the equilibrium states at the same rate $(1+t)^{-3/2+3q/2}$ in $L^q$ norm. But, both the difference of densities and the difference of temperatures of two carriers decay at the rate $(1+t)^{-2-\frac{1}{q}}$, and the velocity and electric field decay at the rate $(1+t)^{-3/2+\frac{1}{2q}}$. This phenomenon on t…
We prove long-term regularity of solutions of the one-fluid Euler-Maxwell system in 3 spatial dimensions, in the case of small initial data with nontrivial vorticity.
The Euler-Maxwell system describes the evolution of a plasma when the collisions are important enough that each species is in a hydrodynamic equilibrium. In this paper we prove global existence of small solutions to this system set in the whole three-dimensional space, by combining the space-time resonance method, dispersive estimates, localization estimates and energy estimates. An important novelty is that we can prove a very slow growth of high derivatives even with a nonintegrable decay by reiterating the energy estimate.

We consider the periodic problem for two-fluid non-isentropic Euler-Maxwell systems in plasmas. By means of suitable choices of symmetrizers and an induction argument on the order of the time-space derivatives of solutions in energy estimates, the global smooth solution with small amplitude is established near a non-constant equilibrium solution with asymptotic stability properties. This improves the results obtained in \cite{LWF16a} for models with temperature diffusion terms by using the pressure functions $p^ν$ in place of the unknown variables densities $n^ν$.
In this paper, we are concerned with the compressible Euler-Maxwell equations with a nonconstant background density (e.g. of ions) in three dimensional space. There exist stationary solutions when the background density is a small perturbation of a positive constant state. We first show the asymptotic stability of solutions to the Cauchy problem near the stationary state provided that the initial perturbation is sufficiently small. Moreover the convergence rates are obtained by combining the $L^p$-$L^q$ estimates for the linearized equations with time-weighted estimate.
We show that space-time resonances induce high-frequency Raman instabilities in the two-fluid Euler-Maxwell system describing laser-plasma interactions. A consequence is that the Zakharov WKB approximation to Euler-Maxwell is unstable for non-zero group velocities. A key step in the proof is the reformulation of the set of resonant frequencies as the locus of weak hyperbolicity for linearized equations around the WKB solution. We analyze those linearized equations with the symbolic flow method. Due to large transverse variations in the WKB profile, the equation satisfied by the symbolic flow a…
Dissipative hyperbolic systems of \textit{regularity-loss} have been recently received increasing attention. Usually, extra higher regularity is assumed to obtain the optimal decay estimates, in comparison with that for the global-in-time existence of solutions. In this paper, we develop a new frequency-localization time-decay property, which enables us to overcome the technical difficulty and improve the minimal decay-regularity for dissipative systems. As an application, it is shown that the optimal decay rate of $L^1(\mathbb{R}^3)$-$L^2(\mathbb{R}^3)$ is available for Euler-Maxwell equation…
We present an alpha-regularization of the Birkhoff-Rott equation, induced by the two-dimensional Euler-alpha equations, for the vortex sheet dynamics. We show that initially smooth self-avoiding vortex sheet remains smooth for all times under the alpha-regularized dynamics, provided the initial density of vorticity is an integrable function over the curve with respect to the arc-length measure.
An explicit expression is obtained for the sectional curvature in the plane spanned by two stationary flows, cos(k, x) and cos(l, x). It is shown that for certain values of the wave vectors k and l the curvature becomes positive for alpha > alpha_0, where 0 < alpha_0 < 1 is of the order 1/k. This suggests that the flow corresponding to such geodesics becomes more stable as one goes from usual Eulerian description to the Euler-alpha model.
We present an alpha-regularization of the Birkhoff-Rott equation, induced by the two-dimensional Euler-alpha equations, for the vortex sheet dynamics. We show the convergence of the solutions of Euler-alpha equations to a weak solution of the Euler equations for initial vorticity being a finite Radon measure of fixed sign, which includes the vortex sheets case. We also show that, provided the initial density of vorticity is an integrable function over the curve with respect to the arc-length measure, (i) an initially Lipschitz chord arc vortex sheet (curve), evolving under the BR-alpha equatio…
The Euler-Maxwell system as a hydrodynamic model for plasma physics to describe the dynamics of the compressible electrons in a constant charged non-moving ion background is studied. The global smooth flow with small amplitude is constructed in three space dimensions when the electron velocity relaxation is present. The speed of the electrons flow trending to uniform equilibrium is obtained. The pointwise behavior of solutions to the linearized homogeneous system in the frequency space is also investigated in detail.
In this paper, we study the well-posedness in critical Besov spaces for two-fluid Euler-Maxwell equations, which is different from the one fluid case. We need to deal with the difficulties mainly caused by the nonlinear coupling and cancelation between two carriers. Precisely, we first obtain the local existence and blow-up criterion of classical solutions to the Cauchy problem and periodic problem pertaining to data in Besov spaces with critical regularity. Furthermore, we construct the global existence of classical solutions with aid of a different energy estimate (in comparison with the one…
We study the large time behavior of solutions near a constant equilibrium to the compressible Euler-Maxwell system in $\r3$. We first refine a global existence theorem by assuming that the $H^3$ norm of the initial data is small, but the higher order derivatives can be arbitrarily large. If the initial data belongs to $\Dot{H}^{-s}$ ($0\le s<3/2$) or $\dot{B}_{2,\infty}^{-s}$ ($0<s\le3/2$), by a regularity interpolation trick, we obtain the various decay rates of the solution and its higher order derivatives. As an immediate byproduct, the usual $L^p$--$L^2$ $(1\le p\le 2)$ type of the decay r…
We first construct the global unique solution by assuming that the initial data is small in the $H^3$ norm but the higher order derivatives could be large. If further the initial data belongs to $\Dot{H}^{-s}$ ($0\le s<3/2$) or $\dot{B}_{2,\infty}^{-s}$ ($0< s\le3/2$), we obtain the various decay rates of the solution and its higher order derivatives. In particular, the decay rates of the density and temperature of electron could reach to $(1+t)^{-13/4}$ in $L^2$ norm.

Starting from the local-in-time classical solution to the compressible Euler system with impermeable boundary condition in half-space, by employing the coupled weak viscous layers (governed by linearized compressible Prandtl equations with Robin boundary condition) and linear kinetic boundary layers, and the analytical tools in \cite{Guo-Jang-Jiang-2010-CPAM} and some new boundary estimates both for Prandtl and Knudsen layers, we proved the local-in-time existence of Hilbert expansion type classical solutions to the scaled Boltzmann equation with Maxwell reflection boundary condition with acco…
We consider the $α$-Euler equations on a bounded three-dimensional domain with frictionless Navier boundary conditions. Our main result is the existence of a strong solution on a positive time interval, uniform in $α$, for $α$ sufficiently small. Combined with the convergence result in a previous article by the same authors, this implies convergence of solutions of the $α$-Euler equations to solutions of the incompressible Euler equations when $α\to 0$. In addition, we obtain a new result on local existence of strong solutions for the incompressible Euler equations on bounded three-dimensional…
Due to the dissipative structure of \textit{regularity-loss}, extra higher regularity than that for the global-in-time existence is usually imposed to obtain the optimal decay rates of classical solutions to dissipative systems. The aim of this paper is to seek the lowest regularity index for the optimal decay rate of $L^{1}(\mathbb{R}^n)$-$L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$. Consequently, a notion of minimal decay regularity for dissipative systems of regularity-loss is firstly proposed. To do this, we develop a new time-decay estimate of $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$-$L^{q}(\mathbb{R}^n)$-$L^{r}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ type b…
We first construct the global unique solution by assuming that the initial data is small in the H^3 norm but its higher order derivatives could be large. If further the initial data belongs to \Dot{H}^{-s} (0\le s<3/2) or \dot{B}_{2,\infty}^{-s} (0< s\le3/2), we obtain the various decay rates of the solution and its higher order derivatives. As an immediate byproduct, the L^p-L^2 (1\le p\le 2) type of the decay rates follow without requiring the smallness for L^p norm of initial data. In particular, the decay rate for the difference of densities could reach to (1+t)^{-13/4} in L^2 norm.
In this article we consider weak solutions of the Euler-$α$ equations in the full plane. We take, as initial unfiltered vorticity, an arbitrary nonnegative, compactly supported, bounded Radon measure. Global well-posedness for the corresponding initial value problem is due M. Oliver and S. Shkoller. We show that, for all time, the support of the unfiltered vorticity is contained in a disk whose radius grows no faster than $\mathcal{O}((t\log t)^{1/4})$. This result is an adaptation of the corresponding result for the incompressible 2D Euler equations with initial vorticity compactly supported,…
We prove the existence of global in time, finite energy, weak solutions to a quantum magnetohydrodynamic system (QMHD) with large data, modeling a charged quantum fluid interacting with a self-generated electromagnetic field. The analysis of QMHD relies upon the use of Madelung transformations. The rigorous derivation requires non-trivial smoothing estimates, which are obtained by assuming slightly higher regularity for the electromagnetic potential. These assumptions are motivated by the nonlinear dependence of the hydrodynamic system in terms of the underlying wave function dynamics, which i…
By using a set of scaling limits, the authors in \cite{ADFL,SS} proposed a framework of deriving the Hall-MHD equations from the two-fluids Euler-Maxwell equations for electrons and ions. In this paper, we derive the Hall-MHD equations from the Navier-Stokes-Maxwell equations with generalized Ohm's law in a mathematically rigorous way via the spectral analysis and energy methods.
This paper continues the study of the validity of the Zakharov model describing Langmuir turbulence. We give an existence theorem for a class of singular quasilinear equations. This theorem is valid for well-prepared initial data. We apply this result to the Euler-Maxwell equations describing laser-plasma interactions, to obtain, in a high-frequency limit, an asymptotic estimate that describes solutions of the Euler-Maxwell equations in terms of WKB approximate solutions which leading terms are solutions of the Zakharov equations. Because of transparency properties of the Euler-Maxwell equatio…
This paper is concerned with the large-time behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem on the two-fluid Euler-Maxwell system with collisions when initial data are around a constant equilibrium state. The main goal is the rigorous justification of diffusion phenomena in fluid plasma at the linear level. Precisely, motivated by the classical Darcy's law for the nonconductive fluid, we first give a heuristic derivation of the asymptotic equations of the Euler-Maxwell system in large time. It turns out that both the density and the magnetic field tend time-asymptotically to the diffusion equation…
In this paper, we study the hydrodynamic limits of both the Landau equation and the Vlasov-Maxwell-Landau system in the whole space. Our main purpose is two-fold: the first one is to give a rigorous derivation of the compressible Euler equations from the Landau equation via the Hilbert expansion; while the second one is to prove, still in the setting of Hilbert expansion, that the unique classical solution of the Vlasov-Maxwell-Landau system converges, which is shown to be globally in time, to the resulting global smooth solution of the Euler-Maxwell system, as the Knudsen number goes to zero.…
We consider the Euler-Voigt equations and the Navier-Stokes-Voigt equations, which are obtained by an inviscid alpha-regularization from the corresponding equations. The main result we show is the structural stability of the system in term of the variations of both viscosity of regularization parameters.
Consider the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system describing the dynamics of an electron gas in the presence of a fixed ion background. Thanks to recent works \cite{Germain-Masmoudi-ASENS-2014, Guo-Ionescu-Pausader-JMP-2014} and \cite{Deng-Ionescu-Pausader-ARMA-2017}, we establish the global-in-time validity of its Hilbert expansion and derive the limiting relativistic Euler-Maxwell system as the mean free path goes to zero. Our method is based on the $L^2-L^{\infty}$ framework and the Glassey-Strauss Representation of the electromagnetic field, with auxiliary $H^1$ estimate and $W^{1,…
We derive the incompressible Euler equations with heat convection with the no-penetration boundary condition from the Boltzmann equation with the diffuse boundary in the hydrodynamic limit for the scale of large Reynold number. Inspired by the recent framework in [30], we consider the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with no-slip boundary conditions as an intermediary approximation and develop a Hilbert-type expansion of the Boltzmann equation around the global Maxwellian that allows the nontrivial heat transfer by convection in the limit. To justify our expansion and the limit, a new direct estim…
The fluid dynamic limit of the Boltzmann equation leading to the Euler equations for an incompressible fluid with constant density in the presence of material boundaries shares some important features with the better known inviscid limit of the Navier-Stokes equations. The present paper slightly extends recent results from [C. Bardos, F. Golse, L. Paillard, Comm. Math. Sci., 10 (2012), 159--190] to the case of boundary conditions for the Boltzmann equation more general than Maxwell's accomodation condition.
The convergence of solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations set in a domain with boundary to solutions of the Euler equations in the large Reynolds number limit is a challenging open problem both in 2 and 3 space dimensions. In particular it is distinct from the question of existence in the large of a smooth solution of the initial-boundary value problem for the Euler equations. The present paper proposes three results in that direction. First, if the solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations satisfy a slip boundary condition with vanishing slip coefficient in the large Reynolds …
We prove small data global existence and scattering for quasilinear systems of Klein-Gordon equations with different speeds, in dimension three. As an application, we obtain a robust global stability result for the Euler-Maxwell equations for electrons.
