The convergence of solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations set in a domain with boundary to solutions of the Euler equations in the large Reynolds number limit is a challenging open problem both in 2 and 3 space dimensions. In particular it is distinct from the question of existence in the large of a smooth solution of the initial-boundary value problem for the Euler equations. The present paper proposes three results in that direction. First, if the solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations satisfy a slip boundary condition with vanishing slip coefficient in the large Reynolds number limit, we show by an energy method that they converge to the classical solution of the Euler equations on its time interval of existence. Next we show that the incompressible Navier-Stokes limit of the Boltzmann equation with Maxwell's accommodation condition at the boundary is governed by the Navier-Stokes equations with slip boundary condition, and we express the slip coefficient at the fluid level in terms of the accommodation parameter at the kinetic level. This second result is formal, in the style of [Bardos-Golse-Levermore, J. Stat. Phys. 63 (1991), 323-344]. Finally, we establish the incompressible Euler limit of the Boltzmann equation set in a domain with boundary with Maxwell's accommodation condition assuming that the accommodation parameter is small enough in terms of the Knudsen number. Our proof uses the relative entropy method following closely the analysis in [L. Saint-Raymond, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 166 (2003), 47-80] in the case of the 3-torus, except for the boundary terms, which require special treatment.
The Boltzmann equation is a fundamental kinetic equation that describes the dynamics of dilute gas. In this paper we study the local well-posedness of the Boltzmann equation in bounded domain with the Cercignani-Lampis boundary condition, which describes the intermediate reflection law between diffuse reflection and specular reflection via two accommodation coefficients. We prove the local-in-time well-posedness of the equation by establishing an $L^\infty$ estimate. In particular, for the $L^\infty$ bound we develop a new decomposition on the boundary term combining with repeated interaction …
The Boltzmann equation is a fundamental kinetic equation that describes the dynamics of dilute gas. In this paper we study the regularity of both dynamical and steady Boltzmann equation in strictly convex domain with the Cercignani-Lampis (C-L) boundary condition. The C-L boundary condition describes the intermediate reflection law between diffuse reflection and specular reflection via two accommodation coefficients. We construct local weighted $C^1$ dynamical solution using repeated interaction through the characteristic. When we assume small fluctuation to the wall temperature and accommodat…
In a general $C^1$ domain, we study the perturbative Cauchy theory for the Boltzmann equation with Maxwell boundary conditions with an accommodation coefficient $α$ in $(\sqrt{2/3},1]$, and discuss this threshold. We consider polynomial or stretched exponential weights $m(v)$ and prove existence, uniqueness and exponential trend to equilibrium around a global Maxwellian in $L^\infty_{x,v}(m)$. Of important note is the fact that the methods do not involve contradiction arguments.
We study the Boltzmann equation with external forces, not necessarily deriving from a potential, in the incompressible Navier-Stokes perturbative regime. On the torus, we establish local-in-time, for any time, Cauchy theories that are independent of the Knudsen number in Sobolev spaces. The existence is proved around a time-dependent Maxwellian that behaves like the global equilibrium both as time grows and as the Knudsen number decreases. We combine hypocoercive properties of linearized Boltzmann operators with linearization around a time-dependent Maxwellian that catches the fluctuations of …
We study the Boltzmann equation on the $d$-dimensional torus in a perturbative setting around a global equilibrium under the Navier-Stokes linearisation. We use a recent functional analysis breakthrough to prove that the linear part of the equation generates a $C^0$-semigroup with exponential decay in Lebesgue and Sobolev spaces with polynomial weight, independently on the Knudsen number. Finally we show a Cauchy theory and an exponential decay for the perturbed Boltzmann equation, uniformly in the Knudsen number, in Sobolev spaces with polynomial weight. The polynomial weight is almost optima…
The present paper proves that all limit points of sequences of renormalized solutions of the Boltzmann equation in the limit of small, asymptotically equivalent Mach and Knudsen numbers are governed by Leray solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. This convergence result holds for hard cutoff potentials in the sense of H. Grad, and therefore completes earlier results by the same authors [Invent. Math. 155, 81-161(2004)] for Maxwell molecules.
A rigorous derivation of the incompressible Euler equations with the no-penetration boundary condition from the Boltzmann equation with the diffuse reflection boundary condition has been a challenging open problem. We settle this open question in the affirmative when the initial data of fluid are well-prepared in a real analytic space, in 3D half space. As a key of this advance we capture the Navier-Stokes equations of $$\textit{viscosity} \sim \frac{\textit{Knudsen number}}{\textit{Mach number}}$$ satisfying the no-slip boundary condition, as an $\textit{intermediary}$ approximation of the Eu…
We investigate the Boltzmann equation, depending on the Knudsen number, in the Navier-Stokes perturbative setting on the torus. Using hypocoercivity, we derive a new proof of existence and exponential decay for solutions close to a global equilibrium, with explicit regularity bounds and rates of convergence. These results are uniform in the Knudsen number and thus allow us to obtain a strong derivation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations as the Knudsen number tends to $0$. Moreover, our method is also used to deal with other kinetic models. Finally, we show that the study of the hydr…
The global classical solution to the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier equation with small initial data in the whole space is constructed through a zero Knudsen number limit from the solutions to the Boltzmann equation with general collision kernels. The key point is the uniform estimate of the Sobolev norm on the global solutions to the Boltzmann equation.
We study Boltzmann-Fermi-Dirac equation when quantum effects are taken into account in dilute gas dynamics. By employing new estimates on trilinear terms of collision kernels, we prove the global existence of the classical solution to Boltzmann-Fermi-Dirac equation near equilibrium. Furthermore, the limit from Boltzmann-Fermi-Dirac equation to incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations is justified rigorously. The corresponding formal analysis was given in the thesis of Zakrevskiy \cite{Zakrevskiy}
We are interested in the hydrodynamic limit of the Boltzmann equation for a gas of fermions in the incompressible Euler regime. We use the relative entropy method as improved by Saint-Raymond. Our result is analogous to what is obtained in the classical case, but the treatment is slightly complicated by the cubic nonlinearity of the collision operator.

The incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with viscous heating was first derived from the Boltzmann equation in the form of the diffusive scaling by Bardos-Levermore-Ukai-Yang (2008). The purpose of this paper is to justify such an incompressible hydrodynamic approximation to the Boltzmann equation in $L^2\cap L^\infty$ setting in a periodic box. Based on an odd-even expansion of the solution with respect to the microscopic velocity, the diffusive coefficients are determined by the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with viscous heating and the super Burnett functions. More impo…
The hydrodynamic limit of the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann equations is considered for weak solutions. Using relative entropy estimate about an absolute Maxwellian, an incompressible Electron-Magnetohydrodynamics-Fourier limit for solutions of the Vlasov-Maxwell-Blotzmann equations over any periodic spatial domain in $\R^3$ is studied. It is shown that any properly scaled sequence of renormalized solutions of the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann equations has fluctuations that (in the weak $L^1$ topology) converge to an infinitesimal Maxwellian with fluid variables that satisfy the incompressibility and B…
In this paper, we justify the convergence from the two-species Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (in briefly,VPB) system to the two-fluid incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Poisson (in briefly, NSFP) system with Ohm's law in the context of classical solutions. We prove the uniform estimates with respect to the Knudsen number $\varepsilon$ for the solutions to the two-species VPB system near equilibrium by treating the strong interspecies interactions. Consequently, we prove the convergence to the two-fluid incompressible NSFP as $\varepsilon$ go to 0.
For the one-species Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (VPB) system in the scaling under which the moments of the fluctuations formally converge to the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Poisson (NSFP) system, we prove the uniform estimates with respect to the Knudsen number $ε$ for the fluctuations. As a consequence, the existence of the global-in-time classical solutions of VPB with all $ε\in (0,1]$ is established in whole space under small size of initial data, and the convergence to incompressible NSFP as $ε$ go to 0 is rigorously justified.
For the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann equations with random uncertainties from the initial data or collision kernels, we proved the sensitivity analysis and energy estimates uniformly with respect to the Knudsen number in the diffusive scaling using hypocoercivity method. As a consequence, we also justified the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson limit with random inputs. In particular, for the first time, we obtain the precise convergence rate {\em without} employing any results based on Hilbert expansion. We not only generalized the previous deterministic Navier-Stokes-Poisson limits to random i…
We derive the incompressible Euler equations with heat convection with the no-penetration boundary condition from the Boltzmann equation with the diffuse boundary in the hydrodynamic limit for the scale of large Reynold number. Inspired by the recent framework in [30], we consider the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with no-slip boundary conditions as an intermediary approximation and develop a Hilbert-type expansion of the Boltzmann equation around the global Maxwellian that allows the nontrivial heat transfer by convection in the limit. To justify our expansion and the limit, a new direct estim…
We prove a global-in-time limit from the two-species Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system to the two-fluid incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Maxwell system with Ohm's law. Besides the techniques developed for the classical solutions to the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann equations in the past years, such as the nonlinear energy method and micro-macro decomposition are employed, key roles are played by the decay properties of both the electric field and the wave equation with linear damping of the divergence free magnetic field. This is a companion paper of [N. Jiang and Y.-L. Luo, \emph{Ann. PDE} 8 (20…

We establish the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier limit for solutions to the Boltzmann equation with a general cut-off collision kernel in a bounded domain. Appropriately scaled families of DiPerna-Lions-(Mischler) renormalized solutions with Maxwell reflection boundary conditions are shown to have fluctuations that converge as the Knudsen number goes to zero. Every limit point is a weak solution to the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with different types of boundary conditions depending on the ratio between the accommodation coefficient and the Knudsen number. The main new result of the pape…
Incompressible Navier-Stokes limit of non-bilinear kinetic equations and application to the BGK, nonlinear Fokker-Planck and Boltzmann-Fermi-Dirac equations
It is challenging to perform a multiscale analysis of mesoscopic systems exhibiting singularities at the macroscopic scale. In this paper, we study the hydrodynamic limit of the Boltzmann equations $$\mathrm{St} \partial_t F + v\cdot \nabla_x F = \frac{1}{\mathrm{Kn}} Q(F ,F ) $$ toward the singular solutions of 2D incompressible Euler equations whose vorticity is unbounded $$\partial_t u + u \cdot \nabla_x u + \nabla_x p = 0,\text{div }u =0.$$ We obtain a microscopic description of the singularity through the so-called kinetic vorticity and understand its behavior in the vicinity of the macro…
For the two-species Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann (VMB) system with the scaling under which the moments of the fluctuations to the global Maxwellians formally converge to the two-fluid incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Maxwell (NSFM) system with Ohm's law, we prove the uniform estimates with respect to Knudsen number $\eps$ for the fluctuations. As consequences, the existence of the global in time classical solutions of VMB with all $\eps \in (0,1]$ is established. Furthermore, the convergence of the fluctuations of the solutions of VMB to the classical solutions of NSFM with Ohm's law is rigoro…
The incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Maxwell system limits of the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system for soft potentials: the noncutoff cases and cutoff cases
We study the diffusive expansion for solutions around Maxwellian equilibrium and in a periodic box to the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system, the most fundamental model for an ensemble of charged particles. Such an expansion yields a set of dissipative new macroscopic PDE's, the incompressible Vlasov-Navier-Stokes-Fourier system and its higher order corrections for describing a charged fluid, where the self-consistent electromagnetic field is present. The uniform estimate on the remainders is established via a unified nonlinear energy method and it guarantees the global in time validity of such a…
In this paper, we provide the first rigorous derivation of hydrodynamic equations from the Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard spheres with small inelasticity. The hydrodynamic system that we obtain is an incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with self-consistent forcing terms and is thus the first hydrodynamic system that properly describes rapid granular flows. To do that, we write our Boltzmann equation in nondimensional form introducing the dimensionless Knudsen number which is intended to tend to 0. The difficulties are then manyfold, the first one coming from the fact that the or…
The fluid dynamic limit of the Boltzmann equation leading to the Euler equations for an incompressible fluid with constant density in the presence of material boundaries shares some important features with the better known inviscid limit of the Navier-Stokes equations. The present paper slightly extends recent results from [C. Bardos, F. Golse, L. Paillard, Comm. Math. Sci., 10 (2012), 159--190] to the case of boundary conditions for the Boltzmann equation more general than Maxwell's accomodation condition.
We study the equilibrating effects of the boundary and intermolecular collision in the kinetic theory for rarefied gases. We consider the Maxwell-type boundary condition, which has weaker equilibrating effect than the commonly studied diffuse reflection boundary condition. The gas region is the spherical domain in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d=1,2$. First, without the equilibrating effect of collision, we obtain the algebraic convergence rates to the steady state of free molecular flow with variable boundary temperature. The convergence behavior has intricate dependence on the accommodation coefficient o…
Recently, the authors proved [2] that the Maxwell-Stefan system with an incompressibility-like condition on the total flux can be rigorously derived from the multi-species Boltzmann equation. Similar cross-diffusion models have been widely investigated, but the particular case of a perturbative incompressible setting around a non constant equilibrium state of the mixture (needed in [2]) seems absent of the literature. We thus establish a quantitative perturbative Cauchy theory in Sobolev spaces for it. More precisely, by reducing the analysis of the Maxwell-Stefan system to the study of a quas…
We investigate the diffusion asymptotics of the Boltzmann equation for gaseous mixtures, in the perturbative regime around a local Maxwellian vector whose fluid quantities solve a flux-incompressible Maxwell-Stefan system. Our framework is the torus and we consider hard-potential collision kernels with angular cutoff. As opposed to existing results about hydrodynamic limits in the mono-species case, the local Maxwellian we study here is not a local equilibrium of the mixture due to cross-interactions. By means of a hypocoercive formalism and introducing a suitable modified Sobolev norm, we bui…
Starting from the local-in-time classical solution to the compressible Euler system with impermeable boundary condition in half-space, by employing the coupled weak viscous layers (governed by linearized compressible Prandtl equations with Robin boundary condition) and linear kinetic boundary layers, and the analytical tools in \cite{Guo-Jang-Jiang-2010-CPAM} and some new boundary estimates both for Prandtl and Knudsen layers, we proved the local-in-time existence of Hilbert expansion type classical solutions to the scaled Boltzmann equation with Maxwell reflection boundary condition with acco…
In the present paper, we study the diffusion limit of the classical solution to the unipolar Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (VPB) system with initial data near a global Maxwellian. We prove the convergence and establish the convergence rate of the global strong solution to the unipolar VPB system towards the solution to an incompressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson-Fourier system based on the spectral analysis with precise estimation on the initial layer.
We consider the hydrodynamic limit of a stationary Boltzmann equation in a unit plate with in-flow boundary. We prove the solution can be approximated in $L^{\infty}$ by the sum of interior solution which satisfies steady incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system, and boundary layer with geometric correction. Also, we construct a counterexample to the classical theory which states the behavior of solution near boundary can be described by the Knudsen layer derived from the Milne problem.
A moderately thick spray can be described by a coupled system of equations consisting of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and the Vlasov-Boltzmann equation. We investigate this kind of mathematical model in this paper. In particular, we study the initial value problem for the Navier-Stokes-Vlasov-Boltzmann equations. The existence of global weak solutions is established by a weak convergence method. The interesting point of our main result is to handle the model with some breakup effects while the velocity of particles is in the whole space.
Diffusive limit of the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system with cutoff soft potentials $-3<γ<0$ in the perturbative framework around global Maxwellian still remains open. By introducing a new weighted $H_{x,v}^2$-$W_{x,v}^{2, \infty}$ approach with time decay, we solve this problem for the full range of cutoff potentials $-3<γ\leq 1$. The core of this approach lies in the interplay between the velocity weighted $H_{x,v}^2$ energy estimate with time decay and the time-velocity weighted $W_{x,v}^{2,\infty}$ estimate with time decay for the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system, which leads to the uniform …

We consider the Boltzmann equations with cutoff collision kernels in bounded domains. For the initial data with finite physical bounds, we prove the existence of global-in-time renormalized solutions in the sense of DiPerna-Lions endowed with incoming boundary condition. Moreover, we justify the limit as the Knudsen number $ε\rightarrow 0$ to Leray solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations with homogeneous Dirichlet conditions from renormalized solutions of the scaled Boltzmann equations when the incoming data are close to the global Maxwellian in the sense of the boundar…
We establish the convergence to the equilibrium for various linear collisional kinetic equations (including linearized Boltzmann and Landau equations) with physical local conservation laws in bounded domains with general Maxwell boundary condition. Our proof consists in establishing an hypocoercivity result for the associated operator, in other words, we exhibit a convenient Hilbert norm for which the associated operator is coercive in the orthogonal of the global conservation laws. Our approach allows us to treat general domains with all type of boundary conditions in a unified framework. In …
This work concerns the global existence of the weak solutions to a system of partial differential equations modeling the evolution of particles in the fluid. That system is given by a coupling between the standard isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations for the macroscopic description of a gas fluid flow, and a Vlasov-Boltzmann type equation governing the evolution of spray droplets modeled as particles with varying radius. We establish the existence of global weak solutions with finite energy, whose density of gas satisfies the renormalized mass equation. The proof, is partially motiv…
