This work concerns the global existence of the weak solutions to a system of partial differential equations modeling the evolution of particles in the fluid. That system is given by a coupling between the standard isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations for the macroscopic description of a gas fluid flow, and a Vlasov-Boltzmann type equation governing the evolution of spray droplets modeled as particles with varying radius.
We establish the existence of global weak solutions with finite energy, whose density of gas satisfies the renormalized mass equation.
The proof, is partially motivated by the work of Feireisl- Novotny-Petzeltov on the weak solutions of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled to the kinetic problem for the spray droplets extending the techniques of Legger and Vasseur developed for the incompressible fluid-kinetic system.
A fluid-particle model is investigated in the present paper, which consists of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the Vlasov equation though a nonlinear drag force. We consider the initial value problem for the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes-Vlasov system and establish the global existence and uniqueness of the weak solution for general initial data in either spatial periodic domain or spatial real line, which is shown to be a classical solution for regular initial data.
We study a hydrodynamic limit of a system of coupled kinetic and fluid equations under a strong local alignment force and a strong Brownian motion. More precisely, we consider the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck type equation and compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a density-dependent viscosity. Based on a relative entropy argument, by assuming the existence of weak solutions to that kinetic-fluid system, we rigorously derive a two-phase fluid model consisting of isothermal Euler equations and compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a density-dependent viscosity.
Sprays are complex flows constituted of dispersed particles in an underlying gas. In this paper, we are interested in the equations for moderately thick sprays consisting of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations and Boltzmann BGK equation. Here the coupling of two equations is through a friction (or drag) force which depends on the density of compressible fluid and the relative velocity between particles and fluid. For the Navier-Stokes-BGK system, we establish the existence and uniqueness of solutions in Sobolev spaces with exponential weight.
We establish the large-time behavior for the coupled kinetic-fluid equations. More precisely, we consider the Vlasov equation coupled to the compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations through a drag forcing term. For this system, the large-time behavior shows the exponential alignment between particles and fluid velocities as time evolves. This improves the previous result by Bae-Choi-Ha-Kang[Disc. Cont. Dyn. Sys. A, 34, (2014), 4419--4458] in which they considered the Vlasov/Navier-Stokes equations with nonlocal velocity alignment forces for particles. Employing a new Lyapunov functional…
A moderately thick spray can be described by a coupled system of equations consisting of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and the Vlasov-Boltzmann equation. We investigate this kind of mathematical model in this paper. In particular, we study the initial value problem for the Navier-Stokes-Vlasov-Boltzmann equations. The existence of global weak solutions is established by a weak convergence method. The interesting point of our main result is to handle the model with some breakup effects while the velocity of particles is in the whole space.
A kinetic-fluid model describing the evolutions of disperse two-phase flows is considered. The model consists of the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation for the particles (disperse phase) coupled with the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for the fluid (fluid phase) through the friction force. The friction force depends on the density, which is different from many previous studies on kinetic-fluid models and is more physical in modeling but significantly more difficult in analysis. New approach and techniques are introduced to deal with the strong coupling of the fluid and the particles. The glob…
In this paper, we prove the local in time well-posedness of thick spray equations in Sobolev spaces, for initial data satisfying a Penrose-type stability condition. This system is a coupling between particles described by a kinetic equation and a surrounding fluid governed by compressible Navier-Stokes equations. In the thick spray regime, the volume fraction of the dispersed phase is not negligible compared to that of the fluid. We identify a suitable stability condition bearing on the initial conditions that provides estimates without loss, ensuring that the system is well-posed. It coincide…
This paper deals with the finite-time blow-up phenomena of classical solutions for Vlasov/Navier-Stokes equations under suitable assumptions on the initial configurations. We show that a solution to the coupled kinetic-fluid system may be initially smooth, however, it can become singular in a finite period of time. We provide a simple idea of showing the finite time blow up of classical solutions to the coupled system which has not been studied so far. We also obtain analogous results for related systems, such as isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations, two-phase fluid equations consis…
In this short paper, we formally derive the thin spray equation for a steady Stokes gas, i.e. the equation consists in a coupling between a kinetic (Vlasov type) equation for the dispersed phase and a (steady) Stokes equation for the gas. Our starting point is a system of Boltzmann equations for a binary gas mixture. The derivation follows the procedure already outlined in [Bernard-Desvillettes-Golse-Ricci, arXiv:1608.00422 [math.AP]] where the evolution of the gas is governed by the Navier-Stokes equation.
We consider the compressible Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck-Navier-Stokes system in a three dimensional bounded domain with nonhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. The system describes the evolution of charged particles ensemble dispersed in an isentropic fluid. For the adiabatic coefficient $γ>3/2$, we establish the global existence of weak solutions to this system with arbitrary large initial and boundary data.
We study an asymptotic analysis of a coupled system of kinetic and fluid equations. More precisely, we deal with the nonlinear Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation coupled with the compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes system through a drag force in a bounded domain with the specular reflection boundary condition for the kinetic equation and homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition for the fluid system. We establish a rigorous hydrodynamic limit corresponding to strong noise and local alignment force. The limiting system is a type of two-phase fluid model consisting of the isothermal Euler system and…
We analyze the Vlasov equation coupled with the compressible Navier--Stokes equations with degenerate viscosities and vacuum. These two equations are coupled through the drag force which depends on the fluid density and the relative velocity between particle and fluid. We first establish the existence and uniqueness of local-in-time regular solutions with arbitrarily large initial data and a vacuum. We then present sufficient conditions on the initial data leading to the finite-time blowup of regular solutions. In particular, our study makes the result on the finite-time singularity formation …
This article proposes a derivation of the Vlasov-Navier-Stokes system for spray/aerosol flows. The distribution function of the dispersed phase is governed by a Vlasov-equation, while the velocity field of the propellant satisfies the Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible fluids. The dynamics of the dispersed phase and of the propellant are coupled through the drag force exerted by the propellant on the dispersed phase. We present a formal derivation of this model from a multiphase Boltzmann system for a binary gaseous mixture, involving the droplets/dust particles in the dispersed phase …
We consider in this paper a spray constituted of an incompressible viscous gas and of small droplets which can breakup. This spray is modeled by the coupling (through a drag force term) of the incom- pressible Navier-Stokes equation and of the Vlasov-Boltzmann equation, together with a fragmentation kernel. We first show at the formal level that if the droplets are very small after the breakup, then the solutions of this system converge towards the solution of a simplified system in which the small droplets produced by the breakup are treated as part of the fluid. Then, existence of global wea…

In this paper, we are concerned with the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (VPB) system in three-dimensional spatial space without angular cutoff in a rectangular duct with or without physical boundary conditions. Near a local Maxwellian with macroscopic quantities given by rarefaction wave solution of one-dimensional compressible Euler equations, we establish the time-asymptotic stability of planar rarefaction wave solutions for the Cauchy problem to VPB system with periodic or specular-reflection boundary condition. In particular, we successfully introduce physical boundaries, namely, specular-reflec…
We consider the Dirichlet problem for a compressible two-fluid model in three dimensions, and obtain the global existence of weak solution with large initial data and independent adiabatic constants Γ,γ>=9/5. The pressure functions are of two components solving the continuity equations. Two typical cases for the pressure are considered, which are motivated by the compressible two-fluid model with possibly unequal velocities [3] and by a limiting system from the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck/compressible Navier-Stokes system [27] (see also some other relevant models like compressible MHD system for two-…
In this paper, we consider a two-phase flow model consisting of the compressible Navier-Stokes systems with degenerate viscosity coupled with the compressible Navier-Stokes systems with constant viscosities via a drag force, which can be derived from Chapman-Enskog expansion for the compressible Navier-Stokes-Vlasov-Fokker-Planck system. For general initial data, we establish the global existence of weak solutions with finite energy to the initial value problem in the three-dimensional periodic domain, and prove the convergence of global weak solutions to its equilibrium state as the time tend…

We present a new hydrodynamic model consisting of the pressureless Euler equations and the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations where the coupling of two systems is through the drag force. This coupled system can be derived, in the hydrodynamic limit, from the particle-fluid equations that are frequently used to study the medical sprays, aerosols and sedimentation problems. For the proposed system, we first construct the local-in-time classical solutions in an appropriate $L^2$ Sobolev space. We also establish the \emph{a priori} large-time behavior estimate by constructing a Lyapun…

We study the global existence of a unique strong solution and its large-time behavior of a two-phase fluid system consisting of the compressible isothermal Euler equations coupled with compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations through a drag forcing term. The coupled system can be derived as the hydrodynamic limit of the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck/isentropic Navier-Stokes equations with strong local alignment forces. When the initial data is sufficiently small and regular, we establish the unique existence of the global $H^s$-solutions in a perturbation framework. We also provide the large-tim…
As V. I. Arnold observed in the 1960s, the Euler equations of incompressible fluid flow correspond formally to geodesic equations in a group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms. Working in an Eulerian framework, we study incompressible flows of shapes as critical paths for action (kinetic energy) along transport paths constrained to have characteristic-function densities. The formal geodesic equations for this problem are Euler equations for incompressible, inviscid potential flow of fluid with zero pressure and surface tension on the free boundary. The problem of minimizing this action exhib…
In this paper, we study the hydrodynamic limits of both the Landau equation and the Vlasov-Maxwell-Landau system in the whole space. Our main purpose is two-fold: the first one is to give a rigorous derivation of the compressible Euler equations from the Landau equation via the Hilbert expansion; while the second one is to prove, still in the setting of Hilbert expansion, that the unique classical solution of the Vlasov-Maxwell-Landau system converges, which is shown to be globally in time, to the resulting global smooth solution of the Euler-Maxwell system, as the Knudsen number goes to zero.…
This paper is devoted to the study of the nonlinear stability of the rarefaction waves of the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system with slab symmetry in the case where the electron background density satisfies an analogue of the Boltzmann relation. We allows that the electric potential may take distinct constant states at both far-fields. The rarefaction wave whose strength is not necessarily small is constructed through the quasineutral Euler equations coming from the zero-order fluid dynamic approximation of the kinetic system. We prove that the local Maxwellian with macroscopic quantities determ…
In this paper, we study the three-dimensional non-isentropic compressible fluid-particle flows. The system involves coupling between the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation and the non-isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations through momentum and energy exchanges. For the initial data near the given equilibrium we prove the global well-posedness of strong solutions and obtain the optimal algebraic rate of convergence in the three-dimensional whole space. For the periodic domain the same global well-posedness result still holds while the convergence rate is exponential. %The proof is based on …
The main purpose of the present paper is to investigate the nonlinear stability of viscous shock waves and rarefaction wave for bipolar Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (VPB) system. To this end, motivated by the micro-macro decomposition to the Boltzmann equation in [21, 23], we first set up a new micro-macro decomposition around the local Maxwellian related to the bipolar VPB system and give a unified framework to study the nonlinear stability of the basic wave patterns to the system. Then, as the applications of this new decomposition, the time-asymptotic stability of the two typical nonlinear wave…
In the paper, we consider the Cauchy problem on the spatially one-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson-Landau system modelling the motion of ions under a generalized Boltzmann relation. Let the Knudsen number and the Debye length be given as $\varepsilon>0$ and $\varepsilon^{b}$ with $\frac{3}{5}\leq b\leq 1$, respectively. As $\varepsilon\to 0$ the formal Hilbert expansion gives the fluid limit to the quasineutral compressible Euler system. We start from the small-amplitude rarefaction wave of the Euler system that admits a smooth approximation with a parameter $δ\sim\varepsilon^{\frac{3}{5}-\frac{2}{5…
In this note we establish hypocoercivity and exponential relaxation to the Maxwellian for a class of kinetic Fokker-Planck-Alignment equations arising in the studies of collective behavior. Unlike previously known results in this direction that focus on convergence near Maxwellian, our result is global for hydrodynamically dense flocks, which has several consequences. In particular, if communication is long-range, the convergence is unconditional. If communication is local then all nearly aligned flocks quantified by smallness of the Fisher information relax to the Maxwellian. In the latter ca…
