An explicit expression is obtained for the sectional curvature in the plane spanned by two stationary flows, cos(k, x) and cos(l, x). It is shown that for certain values of the wave vectors k and l the curvature becomes positive for alpha > alpha_0, where 0 < alpha_0 < 1 is of the order 1/k. This suggests that the flow corresponding to such geodesics becomes more stable as one goes from usual Eulerian description to the Euler-alpha model.
We present an alpha-regularization of the Birkhoff-Rott equation, induced by the two-dimensional Euler-alpha equations, for the vortex sheet dynamics. We show that initially smooth self-avoiding vortex sheet remains smooth for all times under the alpha-regularized dynamics, provided the initial density of vorticity is an integrable function over the curve with respect to the arc-length measure.
We present an alpha-regularization of the Birkhoff-Rott equation, induced by the two-dimensional Euler-alpha equations, for the vortex sheet dynamics. We show the convergence of the solutions of Euler-alpha equations to a weak solution of the Euler equations for initial vorticity being a finite Radon measure of fixed sign, which includes the vortex sheets case. We also show that, provided the initial density of vorticity is an integrable function over the curve with respect to the arc-length measure, (i) an initially Lipschitz chord arc vortex sheet (curve), evolving under the BR-alpha equatio…
We study initial-boundary value problems for the Lagrangian averaged alpha models for the equations of motion for the corotational Maxwell and inviscid fluids in 2D and 3D. We show existence of (global in time) dissipative solutions to these problems. We also discuss the idea of dissipative solution in an abstract Hilbert space framework.
We consider the $α$-Euler equations on a bounded three-dimensional domain with frictionless Navier boundary conditions. Our main result is the existence of a strong solution on a positive time interval, uniform in $α$, for $α$ sufficiently small. Combined with the convergence result in a previous article by the same authors, this implies convergence of solutions of the $α$-Euler equations to solutions of the incompressible Euler equations when $α\to 0$. In addition, we obtain a new result on local existence of strong solutions for the incompressible Euler equations on bounded three-dimensional…
In this article we consider weak solutions of the Euler-$α$ equations in the full plane. We take, as initial unfiltered vorticity, an arbitrary nonnegative, compactly supported, bounded Radon measure. Global well-posedness for the corresponding initial value problem is due M. Oliver and S. Shkoller. We show that, for all time, the support of the unfiltered vorticity is contained in a disk whose radius grows no faster than $\mathcal{O}((t\log t)^{1/4})$. This result is an adaptation of the corresponding result for the incompressible 2D Euler equations with initial vorticity compactly supported,…
In this paper, we study one-dimensional nonhomogeneous isentropic compressible Euler equations with time-periodic boundary conditions. With the aid of the energy methods, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the time-periodic supersonic solutions after some certain time.
On any closed Riemannian 3-manifold which is not a torus bundle, every nonvanishing analytic solution of the stationary Euler equations has a periodic trajectory. This result is originally due to A. Rechtman (arXiv:0904.2719) and K. Cieliebak and E. Volkov (arXiv:1402.6484); here we present an alternative proof of it.
We prove the existence of time-quasi-periodic solutions of the incompressible Euler equation on the three-dimensional torus $\T^3$, with a small time-quasi-periodic external force. The solutions are perturbations of constant (Diophantine) vector fields, and they are constructed by means of normal forms and KAM techniques for reversible quasilinear PDEs.
In this paper we mainly investigate the initial value problem of the periodic Euler-Poincaré equations. We first present a new blow-up result to the system for a special class of smooth initial data by using the rotational invariant properties of the system. Then, we prove that the periodic Euler-Poincaré equations is ill-posed in critical Besov spaces by a contradiction argument. Finally, we verify the system possesses a class of peakon solutions in the sense of distributions.
In the present contribution, we first prove the existence of $\mathbf{m}$-fold simply-connected V-states close to the unit disc for Euler-$α$ equations. These solutions are implicitly obtained as bifurcation curves from the circular patches. We also prove the existence of quasi-periodic in time vortex patches close to the Rankine vortices provided that the scale parameter $α$ belongs to a suitable Cantor-like set of almost full Lebesgue measure. The techniques used to prove this result are borrowed from the Berti-Bolle theory in the context of KAM for PDEs.
We construct Gaussian invariant measures for the two-dimensional Euler equation on the plane. We show the existence of solution with initial conditions in the support of the measures, namely $H^β_{loc}(\R^2)$ with $β<-1$. Uniqueness and continuity of the velocity flow are proved.
We consider the two-dimensional Euler equation with periodic boundary conditions. We construct time quasi-periodic solutions of this equation made of localized travelling profiles with compact support propagating over a stationary state depending on only one variable. The direction of propagation is orthogonal to this variable, and the support is concentrated on flat strips of the stationary state. The frequencies of the solution are given by the locally constant velocities associated with the stationary state.
In the field of differential equations, particularly fluid dynamics, many researchers have shown an interest in the behavior of time periodic solutions. In this paper, we study isentropic gas flow in a bounded interval and apply a time periodic outer force. This motion is described by the compressible Euler equation with the outer force. Our purpose in this paper is to prove the existence of a time periodic solutions. Unfortunately, little is known for the system of conservation laws until now. The problem seems to lie in fact that the equation does not possesses appropriate decay estimates.
In this paper, we study the initial-boundary value problem of one-dimensional isentropic compressible Euler equations with the source term $βρ|u|^αu$. By means of wave decomposition and the uniform a-priori estimates, we prove the global existence of smooth solutions under small perturbations around the supersonic Fanno flow. Then, by Gronwall's inequality, we get the smooth solution is time-periodic.
In this paper, we consider the one-dimensional isentropic compressible Euler equations with linear damping $β(t,x)ρu$ in a bounded domain, which can be used to describe the process of compressible flows through a porous medium.~And the model is imposed a dissipative subsonic time-periodic boundary condition.~Our main results reveal that the time-periodic boundary can trigger a unique subsonic time-periodic smooth solution which is stable under small perturbations on initial data. Moreover, the time-periodic solution possesses higher regularity and stability provided a higher regular boundary c…
We consider the smooth, compactly supported solutions of the steady 3D Euler equations of incompressible fluids constructed by Gavrilov in 2019, and we study the corresponding fluid particle dynamics. This is an ode analysis, which contributes to the description of Gavrilov's vector field.
In this paper, we study the global existence of steady subsonic Euler flows through infinitely long nozzles which are periodic in $x_1$ direction with the period $L$. It is shown that when the variation of Bernoulli function at some given section is small and mass flux is in a suitable regime, there exists a unique global subsonic flow in the nozzle. Furthermore, the flow is also periodic in $x_1$ direction with the period $L$. If, in particular, the Bernoulli function is a constant, we also get the existence of subsonic-sonic flows when the mass flux takes the critical value.
We are concerned with a time periodic supersonic flow through a bounded interval. This motion is described by the compressible Euler equation with a time periodic outer force. Our goal in this paper is to prove the existence of a time periodic solution. Although this is a fundamental problem for other equations, it has not been received much attention for the system of conservation laws until now.
Using the Mountain Pass Theorem, we establish the existence of periodic solution for Euler-Lagrange equation. Lagrangian consists of kinetic part (an anisotropic G-function), potential part $K-W$ and a forcing term. We consider two situations: $G$ satisfying $Δ_2\cap\nabla_2$ in infinity and globally. We give conditions on the growth of the potential near zero for both situations.
Building on the work of Crouseilles and Faou on the 2D case, we construct $C^\infty$ quasi-periodic solutions to the incompressible Euler equations with periodic boundary conditions in dimension 3 and in any even dimension. These solutions are genuinely high-dimensional, which is particularly interesting because there are extremely few examples of high-dimensional initial data for which global solutions are known to exist. These quasi-periodic solutions can be engineered so that they are dense on tori of arbitrary dimension embedded in the space of solenoidal vector fields. Furthermore, in the…
We study a basic plasma physics model--the one-fluid Euler--Poisson system on the square torus, in which a compressible electron fluid flows under its own electrostatic field. In this paper we prove long-term regularity of periodic solutions of this system in 2 spatial dimensions. Our main conclusion is that on a square torus of side length $R$, if the initial data is sufficiently close to a constant solution, then the solution is wellposed for a time at least $R/ε^2(\log R)^{O(1)}$, where $ε$ is the size of the initial data.
In this paper, we consider the one-dimensional isentropic compressible Euler equations with source term $β(t,x)ρ|u|^αu$ in a bounded domain, which can be used to describe gas transmission in a nozzle.~The model is imposed a subsonic time-periodic boundary condition.~Our main results reveal that the time-periodic boundary can trigger an unique subsonic time-periodic smooth solution and this unique periodic solution is stable under small perturbations on initial and boundary data.~To get the existence of subsonic time-periodic solution, we use the linear iterative skill and transfer the boundary…
We consider a modified Euler equation on $\mathbb R^2$. We prove existence of weak global solutions for bounded (and fast decreasing at infinity) initial conditions and construct Gibbs-type measures on function spaces which are quasi-invariant for the Euler flow. Almost everywhere with respect to such measures (and, in particular, for less regular initial conditions), the flow is shown to be also globally defined.
In this paper we use the new regularity and stability estimates for Alexandrov solutions to Monge-Ampere equations estabilished by G.De Philippis and A.Figalli to provide a global in time existence of distributional solutions to a semigeostrophic equation on the 2-dimensional torus, under very mild assumptions on the initial data. A link with Lagrangian solutions is also discussed.
We prove the existence of steady \emph{space quasi-periodic} stream functions, solutions for the Euler equation in vorticity-stream function formulation in the two dimensional channel ${\mathbb R}\times [-1,1]$. These solutions bifurcate from a prescribed shear equilibrium near the Couette flow, whose profile induces finitely many modes of oscillations in the horizontal direction for the linearized problem. Using a Nash-Moser implicit function iterative scheme, near such equilibrium we construct small amplitude, space reversible stream functions slightly deforming the linear solutions and reta…
In this note we show that the periodic b-equation can only be realized as an Euler equation on the Lie group Diff(S^1) of all smooth and orientiation preserving diffeomorphisms on the cirlce if b=2, i.e. for the Camassa-Holm equation. In this case the inertia operator generating the metric on Diff(S^1) is given by A=1-d^2/dx^2. In contrast, the Degasperis-Procesi equation, for which b=3, is not an Euler equation on Diff(S^1) for any inertia operator. Our result generalizes a recent result of B. Kolev.
This paper concerns the study of some special ordered structures in turbulent flows. In particular, a systematic and relevant methodology is proposed to construct non trivial and non radial rotating vortices with non necessarily uniform densities and with different $m$--fold symmetries, $m\ge 1$. In particular, a complete study is provided for the truncated quadratic density $(A|x|^2+B){\bf{1}}_{\mathbb{D}}(x)$, with $\mathbb{D}$ the unit disc. We exhibit different behaviors with respect to the coefficients $A$ and $B$ describing the rarefaction of bifurcating curves.
In this paper, we highlight the importance of the boundary effects on the construction of quasi-periodic vortex patches solutions close to Rankine vortices and whose existence is not known in the whole space due to the resonances of the linear frequencies. Availing of the lack of invariance by radial dilation of Euler equations in the unit disc and using a Nash-Moser implicit function iterative scheme we show the existence of such structures when the radius of the Rankine vortex belongs to a suitable massive Cantor-like set with almost full Lebesgue measure.
Compressible Euler-Poisson equations are the standard self-gravitating models for stellar dynamics in classical astrophysics. In this article, we construct periodic solutions to the isothermal ($γ=1$) Euler-Poisson equations in $R^{2}$ with possible applications to the formation of plate, spiral galaxies and the evolution of gas-rich, disk-like galaxies. The results complement Yuen's solutions without rotation (M.W. Yuen, Analytical Blowup Solutions to the 2-dimensional Isothermal Euler-Poisson Equations of Gaseous Stars, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 341(2008), 445--456.). Here, the periodic rotation …
We prove that several evolution equations arising as mathematical models for fluid motion cannot be realized as metric Euler equations on the Lie group of all smooth and orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms on the circle. These include the quasi-geostrophic model equation, the axisymmetric Euler flow in higher space dimensions, and De Gregorio's vorticity model equation.
In this paper, we study the $μ$-variant of the periodic $b$-equation and show that this equation can be realized as a metric Euler equation on the Lie group $\Diff^{\infty}(§)$ if and only if $b=2$ (for which it becomes the $μ$-Camassa-Holm equation). In this case, the inertia operator generating the metric on $\Diff^{\infty}(§)$ is given by $L=μ-\partial_x^2$. In contrast, the $μ$-Degasperis-Procesi equation (obtained for $b=3$) is not a metric Euler equation on $\Diff^{\infty}(§)$ for any regular inertia operator $A\in\mathcal L_{\text{is}}^{\text{sym}}(C^{\infty}(§))$. The paper generalizes…
We construct spherically symmetric solutions to the Einstein-Euler equations, which give models of gaseous stars in the framework of the general theory of relativity. We assume a realistic barotropic equation of state. Equilibria of the spherically symmetric Einstein-Euler equations are given by the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations, and time periodic solutions around the equilibrium of the linearized equations can be considered. Our aim is to find true solutions near these time-periodic approximations. Solutions satisfying so called physical boundary condition at the free boundary with the…
In this paper, we address for the 2D Euler equations the existence of rigid time periodic solutions close to stationary radial vortices of type $f_0(|x|){\bf 1}_{\mathbb{D}}(x)$, with $\mathbb{D}$ the unit disc and $f_0$ being a strictly monotonic profile with constant sign. We distinguish two scenarios according to the sign of the profile: defocusing and focusing. In the first regime, we have scarcity of the bifurcating curves associated with lower symmetry. However in the focusing case we get a countable family of bifurcating solutions associated with large symmetry. The approach developed i…
We consider the Euler-Korteweg system with space periodic boundary conditions $ x \in \mathbb T^d $. We prove a local in time existence result of classical solutions for irrotational velocity fields requiring natural minimal regularity assumptions on the initial data.
The paper studies the issue of stability of solutions to the Navier-Stokes and damped Euler systems in periodic boxes. We show that under action of fast oscillating-in- time external forces all two dimensional regular solutions converge to a time periodic flow. Unexpectedly, effects of stabilization can be also obtained for systems with stationary forces with large total momentum (average of the velocity). Thanks to the Galilean transformation and space boundary conditions, the stationary force changes into one with time oscillations. In the three dimensional case we show an analogical result …
We consider spherically symmetric motions of inviscid compressible gas surrounding a solid ball under the gravity of the core. Equilibria touch the vacuum with finite radii, and the linearized equation around one of the equilibria has time-periodic solutions. To justify the linearization, we should construct true solutions for which this time-periodic solution plus the equilibrium is the first approximation. But this leads us to difficulty caused by singularities at the free boundary touching the vacuum. We solve this problem by the Nash-Moser theorem.
For any θ<1/10 we construct periodic weak solutions of the incompressible Euler equations which dissipate the total kinetic energy and are Hölder-continuous with exponent θ. A famous conjecture of Onsager states the existence of such dissipative solutions with any Hölder exponent θ<1/3. Our theorem is the first result in this direction.
We study spherically symmetric motions of a gaseous star governed by the Euler-Poisson equations. Equilibria are given as solutions of the Lane-Emden equations, and the linearized equation around one of these equilibria admits time-periodic solutions. To justify the linearization, we should construct true solutions of the nonlinear evolution equation for which this time-periodic solutions plus the equilibrium is the first approximation. To do so, we apply the Nash-Moser theory. We presents a partial result under some assumptions on the adiabatic exponent of the gas, and propose an open problem…
Using a recent result of C. De Lellis and L. Székelyhidi Jr. we show that, in the case of periodic boundary conditions and for dimension greater or equal 2, there exist infinitely many global weak solutions to the incompressible Euler equations with initial data $v_0$, where $v_0$ may be any solenoidal $L^2$-vectorfield. In addition, the energy of these solutions is bounded in time.
Even in two dimensions, the spectrum of the linearized Euler operator is notoriously hard to compute. In this paper we give a new geometric calculation of the essential spectrum for 2D flows. This generalizes existing results---which are only available when the flow has arbitrarily long periodic orbits---and clarifies the role of individual streamlines in generating essential spectra.
