The present lack of a stable method to compare persistent homology groups with torsion is a relevant problem in current research about Persistent Homology and its applications in Pattern Recognition. In this paper we introduce a pseudo-distance d_T that represents a possible solution to this problem. Indeed, d_T is a pseudo-distance between multidimensional persistent homology groups with coefficients in an Abelian group, hence possibly having torsion. Our main theorem proves the stability of the new pseudo-distance with respect to the change of the filtering function, expressed both with respect to the max-norm and to the natural pseudo-distance between topological spaces endowed with vector-valued filtering functions. Furthermore, we prove a result showing the relationship between d_T and the matching distance in the 1-dimensional case, when the homology coefficients are taken in a field and hence the comparison can be made.
According to a result of Ehresmann, the torsions of integral homology of real Grassmannian are all of order $2$. In this note, We compute the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-dimensions of torsions in the integral homology and cohomology of real Grassmannian.
A multifiltration is a functor indexed by $\mathbb{N}^r$ that maps any morphism to a monomorphism. The goal of this paper is to describe in an explicit and combinatorial way the natural $\mathbb{N}^r$-graded $R[x_1,\ldots, x_r]$-module structure on the homology of a multifiltration of simplicial complexes. To do that we study multifiltrations of sets and vector spaces. We prove in particular that the $\mathbb{N}^r$-graded $R[x_1,\ldots, x_r]$-modules that can occur as $R$-spans of multifiltrations of sets are the direct sums of monomial ideals.
We show that Lupercio-Uribe-Xicoténcatl's orbifold loop product and coproduct can be described by a group cohomology class in some cases. By computing this cohomology class, we show that in some cases the orbifold loop product is trivial.
We use ku-cohomology to determine lower bounds for the topological complexity of 2-torsion lens spaces. In the process, we give an almost-complete description of the tensor product of two copies of the ku-homology of infinite mod 2^e lens space, proving a conjecture of Gonzalez about the annihilator ideal of the bottom class. Our proof involves an elaborate row reduction of presentation matrices of arbitrary size.
In this paper, we classify the congruence classes of $\mathbf{F}^5_{n(2)}$-polyhedra, i.e. $(n-1)$-connected, at most $(n+5)$-dimensional polyhedra with 2-torsion free homology. The proof relies on the matrix problem technique which was developed in the classification of representations of algebras and applied to homotopy theory by Baues and Drozd.
We study the integral torsion of the values of strict polynomial functors defined over the integers. We interpret some classical homological invariants as values of strict polynomial functors and therefore obtain estimates of the integral torsion of these invariants, including cancellation results.
An exact computation of the persistent Betti numbers of a submanifold $X$ of a Euclidean space is possible only in a theoretical setting. In practical situations, only a finite sample of $X$ is available. We show that, under suitable density conditions, it is possible to estimate the multidimensional persistent Betti numbers of $X$ from the ones of a union of balls centered on the sample points; this even yields the exact value in restricted areas of the domain. Using these inequalities we improve a previous lower bound for the natural pseudodistance to assess dissimilarity between the shapes …
We prove that every $\mathbb{Z}_2$H-thin link has no $2^k$-torsion for $k>1$ in its Khovanov homology. Together with previous results by Eun Soo Lee and the author, this implies that integer Khovanov homology of non-split alternating links is completely determined by the Jones polynomial and signature. Our proof is based on establishing an algebraic relation between Bockstein and Turner differentials on Khovanov homology over $\mathbb{Z}_2$. We conjecture that a similar relation exists between the corresponding spectral sequences.
In this paper, we study the stable homotopy types of $\mathbf{F}^4_{n(2)}$-polyhedra, i.e., $(n-1)$-connected, at most $(n+4)$-dimensional polyhedra with 2-torsion free homologies. We are able to classify the indecomposable $\mathbf{F}^4_{n(2)}$-polyhedra. The proof relies on the matrix problem technique which was developed in the classification of representaions of algebras and applied to homotopy theory by Baues and Drozd.
Suppose an amenable group $G$ is acting freely on a simply connected simplicial complex $\tilde X$ with compact quotient $X$. Fix $n \geq 1$, assume $H_n(\tilde X, \mathbb{Z})=0$ and let $(H_i)$ be a Farber chain in $G$. We prove that the torsion of the integral homology in dimension $n$ of $\tilde{X}/H_i$ grows subexponentially in $[G:H_i]$. By way of contrast, if $X$ is not compact, there are solvable groups of derived length 3 for which torsion in homology can grow faster than any given function.
Given a finite group G, a G-covering of closed Riemannian manifolds, and a so-called G-relation, a construction of Sunada produces a pair of manifolds M_1 and M_2 that are strongly isospectral. Such manifolds have the same dimension and the same volume, and their rational homology groups are isomorphic. We investigate the relationship between their integral homology. The Cheeger-Mueller Theorem implies that a certain product of orders of torsion homology and of regulators for M_1 agrees with that for M_2. We exhibit a connection between the torsion in the integral homology of M_1 and M_2 on th…
Characterizing the dynamics of time-evolving data within the framework of topological data analysis (TDA) has been attracting increasingly more attention. Popular instances of time-evolving data include flocking/swarming behaviors in animals and social networks in the human sphere. A natural mathematical model for such collective behaviors is a dynamic point cloud, or more generally a dynamic metric space (DMS). In this paper we extend the Rips filtration stability result for (static) metric spaces to the setting of DMSs. We do this by devising a certain three-parameter "spatiotemporal" filtra…
Comparison between multidimensional persistent Betti numbers is often based on the multidimensional matching distance. While this metric is rather simple to define and compute by considering a suitable family of filtering functions associated with lines having a positive slope, it has two main drawbacks. First, it forgets the natural link between the homological properties of filtrations associated with lines that are close to each other. As a consequence, part of the interesting homological information is lost. Second, its intrinsically discontinuous definition makes it difficult to study its…
We provide a calculational method for rational stable equivariant homotopy theory for a torus G based on the homology of the Borel construction on fixed points. More precisely we define an abelian torsion model, A_t(G) of finite injective dimension, a homology theory \piAt_* taking values in A_t(G) based on the homology of the Borel construction, and a finite Adams spectral sequence Ext_{A_t(G)}^{*,*}(\piAt_*(X), \piAt_*(Y)) ==> [X,Y]^G_* for rational G-spectra X and Y.
We study torsion in homology of the random $d$-complex $Y \sim Y_d(n,p)$ experimentally. Our experiments suggest that there is almost always a moment in the process where there is an enormous burst of torsion in homology $H_{d-1}(Y)$. This moment seems to coincide with the phase transition studied in \cite{AL,LP,LP3} , where cycles in $H_d(Y)$ first appear with high probability. Our main study is the limiting distribution on the $q$-part of the torsion subgroup of $H_{d-1}(Y)$ for small primes $q$. We find strong evidence for a limiting Cohen--Lenstra distribution, where the probability that t…
In this note we describe the role of the Schur multiplier in the structure of the $p$-torsion of discrete groups. More concretely, we show how the knowledge of $H_2G$ allows to approximate many groups by colimits of copies of finite $p$-groups. Our examples include interesting families of non-commutative infinite groups, including Burnside groups, certain solvable examples and the first Grigorchuk group. We also provide a counterexample for a conjecture of E. Farjoun.
We prove that the mod $2$ Betti numbers of double coverings of a complex hyperplane arrangement complement are combinatorially determined. The proof is based on a relation between the mod $2$ Aomoto complex and the transfer long exact sequence. Applying the above result to the icosidodecahedral arrangement ($16$ planes in the three dimensional space related to the icosidodecahedron), we conclude that the first homology of the Milnor fiber has non-trivial $2$-torsion.
Let $G$ be a compact connected Lie group, and let $\mathrm{Hom}(\mathbb{Z}^m,G)$ be the space of pairwise commuting $m$-tuples in $G$. We study the problem of which primes $p$ $\mathrm{Hom}(\mathbb{Z}^m,G)_1$, the connected component of $\mathrm{Hom}(\mathbb{Z}^m,G)$ containing the element $(1,\ldots,1)$, has $p$-torsion in homology. We will prove that $\mathrm{Hom}(\mathbb{Z}^m,G)_1$ for $m\ge 2$ has $p$-torsion in homology if and only if $p$ divides the order of the Weyl group of $G$ for $G=SU(n)$ and some exceptional groups. We will also compute the top homology of $\mathrm{Hom}(\mathbb{Z}^…
For $d \geq 2$ and $G$ a finite abelian group, define $T_d(G)$ to be the minimum number of vertices $n$ so that there exists a simplicial complex $X$ on $n$ vertices which has the torsion part of $H_{d - 1}(X)$ isomorphic to $G$. Here we establish an upper bound on $T_d(G)$ which matches the known lower bound up to a constant factor. That is, we prove that for every $d \geq 2$ there exist constants $c_d$ and $C_d$ so that for any finite abelian group $c_d(\log |G|)^{1/d} \leq T_d(G) \leq C_d(\log |G|)^{1/d}.$
Linear upper bounds are provided for the size of the torsion homology of negatively curved manifolds of finite volume in all dimensions $d\ne 3$. This extends a classical theorem by Gromov. In dimension $3$, as opposed to the Betti numbers, the size of torsion homology is unbounded in terms of the volume. Moreover, there is a sequence of $3$-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds that converges to $\mathbb{H}^3$ in the Benjamini--Schramm topology while its normalized torsion in the first homology is dense in $[0,\infty]$. In dimension $d\geq 4$ a somewhat precise estimate is given for the number of …
We will provide bounds on both the Betti numbers and the torsion part of the homology of hyperbolic orbifolds. These bounds are linear in the volume and are a direct consequence of an efficient simplicial model of the thick part, which we will construct as well. The homology statements complement previous work of Bader, Gelander and Sauer (torsion homology of manifolds), Samet (Betti numbers of orbifolds) and a classical theorem of Gromov (Betti numbers of manifolds). For arithmetic, non-compact hyperbolic orbifolds -- i.e. in the case of arithmetic, non-uniform lattices in $\operatorname{Isom…
We prove new vanishing results on the growth of higher torsion homologies for suitable arithmetic lattices, Artin groups and mapping class groups. The growth is understood along Farber sequences, in particular, along residual chains. For principal congruence subgroups, we also obtain strong asymptotic bounds for the torsion growth. As a central tool, we introduce a quantitative homotopical method called effective rebuilding. This constructs small classifying spaces of finite index subgroups, at the same time controlling the complexity of the homotopy. The method easily applies to free abelian …
We provide a bottom up construction of torsion generators for weighted homology of a weighted complex over a discrete valuation ring $R=\mathbb{F}[[π]]$. This is achieved by starting from a basis for classical homology of the $n$-th skeleton for the underlying complex with coefficients in the residue field $\mathbb{F}$ and then lifting it to a basis for the weighted homology with coefficients in the ring $R$. Using the latter, a bijection is established between $n+1$ and $n$ dimensional simplices whose weight ratios provide the exponents of the $π$-monomials that generate each torsion summand …
We investigate the (co)homological properties of two classes of Lie algebras that are constructed from any finite poset: the solvable class $\frak{gl}^\preceq$ and the nilpotent class $\frak{gl}^\prec$. We confirm the conjecture of Jollenbeck that says: every prime power $p^r\!\leq\!n\!-\!2$ appears as torsion in $H_\ast(\frak{nil}_n;\mathbb{Z})$, and every prime power $p^r\!\leq\!n\!-\!1$ appears as torsion in $H_\ast(\frak{sol}_n;\mathbb{Z})$. If $\preceq$ is a bounded poset, then the (co)homology of $\frak{gl}^\preceq$ is \emph{torsion-convex}, i.e. if it contains $p$-torsion, then it also …

Multiparameter persistent homology has been largely neglected as an input to machine learning algorithms. We consider the use of lattice-based convolutional neural network layers as a tool for the analysis of features arising from multiparameter persistence modules. We find that these show promise as an alternative to convolutions for the classification of multidimensional persistence modules.
We compute the equivariant $K$-homology of the classifying space for proper actions, for compact 3-dimensional hyperbolic reflection groups. This coincides with the topological $K$-theory of the reduced $C^\ast$-algebra associated to the group, via the Baum-Connes conjecture. We show that, for any such reflection group, the associated $K$-theory groups are torsion-free. As a result we can promote previous rational computations to integral compu- tations. Our proof relies on a new efficient algebraic criterion for checking torsion-freeness of K-theory groups, which could be applied to many othe…
