We study the list-decoding problem of alternant codes, with the notable case of classical Goppa codes. The major consideration here is to take into account the size of the alphabet, which shows great influence on the list-decoding radius. This amounts to compare the \emph{generic} Johnson bound to the \emph{$q$-ary} Johnson bound. This difference is important when $q$ is very small. Essentially, the most favourable case is $q=2$, for which the decoding radius is greatly improved, notably when the relative minimum distance gets close to 1/2. Even though the announced result, which is the list-decoding radius of binary Goppa codes, is new, it can be rather easily made up from previous sources (V. Guruswami, R. M. Roth and I. Tal, R .M. Roth), which may be a little bit unknown, and in which the case of binary Goppa codes has apparently not been thought at. Only D. J. Bernstein treats the case of binary Goppa codes in a preprint. References are given in the introduction. We propose an autonomous treatment and also a complexity analysis of the studied algorithm, which is quadratic in the blocklength $n$, when decoding at some distance of the relative maximum decoding radius, and in $O(n^7)$ when reaching the maximum radius.
In this paper, a code-based public-key cryptosystem based on interleaved Goppa codes is presented. The scheme is based on encrypting several ciphertexts with the same Goppa code and adding a burst error to them. Possible attacks are outlined and the key size of several choices of parameters is compared to those of known schemes for the same security level. For example, for security level 128 bits, we obtain a key size of 696 Kbits whereas the classical McEliece scheme based on Goppa codes using list decoding requires a key size of 1935 Kbits.
Let $p$ be a prime number and $s> 0$ an integer. In this short note, we investigate one-point geometric Goppa codes associated with an elementary abelian $p$-extension of $\mathbb{F}_{p^{s}}(x)$. We determine their dimension and the exact minimum distance in a few cases. These codes are a special case of weak Castle codes. We also list the exact values of the second generalized Hamming weight of these codes in a few cases. Simple criteria for the self-duality and the quasi-self-duality of these codes are also provided. Furthermore, we construct examples of quantum codes, convolutional codes, a…
Understanding the limits of list-decoding and list-recovery of Reed-Solomon (RS) codes is of prime interest in coding theory and has attracted a lot of attention in recent decades. However, the best possible parameters for these problems are still unknown, and in this paper, we take a step in this direction. We show the existence of RS codes that are list-decodable or list-recoverable beyond the Johnson radius for \emph{any} rate, with a polynomial field size in the block length. In particular, we show that for any $ε\in (0,1)$ there exist RS codes that are list-decodable from radius $1-ε$ and…
We investigate the list decodability of symbol-pair codes in the present paper. Firstly, we show that list decodability of every symbol-pair code does not exceed the Gilbert-Varshamov bound. On the other hand, we are able to prove that with high probability, a random symbol-pair code can be list decoded up to the Gilbert-Varshamov bound. Our second result of this paper is to derive the Johnson-type bound, i.e., a lower bound on list decoding radius in terms of minimum distance. Finally, we present a list decoding algorithm of Reed-Solomon codes beyond the Johnson-type bound.
List-decoding of Reed-Solomon (RS) codes beyond the so called Johnson radius has been one of the main open questions since the work of Guruswami and Sudan. It is now known by the work of Rudra and Wootters, using techniques from high dimensional probability, that over large enough alphabets most RS codes are indeed list-decodable beyond this radius. In this paper we take a more combinatorial approach which allows us to determine the precise relation (up to the exact constant) between the decoding radius and the list size. We prove a generalized Singleton bound for a given list size, and conjec…
In this work, we study the problem of list decoding of insertions and deletions. We present a Johnson-type upper bound on the maximum list size. The bound is meaningful only when insertions occur. Our bound implies that there are binary codes of rate $Ω(1)$ that are list-decodable from a $0.707$-fraction of insertions. For any $τ_\mathsf{I} \geq 0$ and $τ_\mathsf{D} \in [0,1)$, there exist $q$-ary codes of rate $Ω(1)$ that are list-decodable from a $τ_\mathsf{I}$-fraction of insertions and $τ_\mathsf{D}$-fraction of deletions, where $q$ depends only on $τ_\mathsf{I}$ and $τ_\mathsf{D}$. We als…
We show that a random puncturing of a code with good distance is list recoverable beyond the Johnson bound. In particular, this implies that there are Reed-Solomon codes that are list recoverable beyond the Johnson bound. It was previously known that there are Reed-Solomon codes that do not have this property. As an immediate corollary to our main theorem, we obtain better degree bounds on unbalanced expanders that come from Reed-Solomon codes.
We show that locally repairable codes (LRCs) can be list decoded efficiently beyond the Johnson radius for a large range of parameters by utilizing the local error correction capabilities. The new decoding radius is derived and the asymptotic behavior is analyzed. We give a general list decoding algorithm for LRCs that achieves this radius along with an explicit realization for a class of LRCs based on Reed-Solomon codes (Tamo-Barg LRCs). Further, a probabilistic algorithm for unique decoding of low complexity is given and its success probability analyzed.
This paper is concerned with list decoding of $2$-interleaved binary alternant codes. The principle of the proposed algorithm is based on a combination of a list decoding algorithm for (interleaved) Reed-Solomon codes and an algorithm for (non-interleaved) alternant codes. A new upper bound on the decoding radius is derived and the list size is shown to scale polynomially in the code parameters. While it remains an open problem whether this upper bound is achievable, the provided simulation results show that a decoding radius exceeding the binary Johnson radius can be achieved with a high prob…
Linearized Reed-Solomon (LRS) codes are sum-rank metric codes that fulfill the Singleton bound with equality. In the two extreme cases of the sum-rank metric, they coincide with Reed-Solomon codes (Hamming metric) and Gabidulin codes (rank metric). List decoding in these extreme cases is well-studied, and the two code classes behave very differently in terms of list size, but nothing is known for the general case. In this paper, we derive a lower bound on the list size for LRS codes, which is, for a large class of LRS codes, exponential directly above the Johnson radius. Furthermore, we show t…
List decoding of insertions and deletions in the Levenshtein metric is considered. The Levenshtein distance between two sequences is the minimum number of insertions and deletions needed to turn one of the sequences into the other. In this paper, a Johnson-like upper bound on the maximum list size when list decoding in the Levenshtein metric is derived. This bound depends only on the length and minimum Levenshtein distance of the code, the length of the received word, and the alphabet size. It shows that polynomial-time list decoding beyond half the Levenshtein distance is possible for many pa…
The list-decodable code has been an active topic in theoretical computer science. There are general results about the list-decodability to the Johnson radius and the list-decoding capacity theorem. In this paper we show that rates, list-decodable radius and list sizes are closely related to the classical topic of covering codes. We prove new general simple but strong upper bounds for list-decodable codes in general finite metric spaces based on various covering codes. The general covering code upper bounds can be applied to the case that the volumes of the balls depend on the centers, not only …
In this work, we show new and improved error-correcting properties of folded Reed-Solomon codes and multiplicity codes. Both of these families of codes are based on polynomials over finite fields, and both have been the sources of recent advances in coding theory. Folded Reed-Solomon codes were the first explicit constructions of codes known to achieve list-decoding capacity; multivariate multiplicity codes were the first constructions of high-rate locally correctable codes; and univariate multiplicity codes are also known to achieve list-decoding capacity. However, previous analyses of the er…
In this work it is shown that locally repairable codes (LRCs) can be list-decoded efficiently beyond the Johnson radius for a large range of parameters by utilizing the local error-correction capabilities. The corresponding decoding radius is derived and the asymptotic behavior is analyzed. A general list-decoding algorithm for LRCs that achieves this radius is proposed along with an explicit realization for LRCs that are subcodes of Reed--Solomon codes (such as, e.g., Tamo--Barg LRCs). Further, a probabilistic algorithm of low complexity for unique decoding of LRCs is given and its success pr…
The multiplicity Schwartz-Zippel lemma bounds the total multiplicity of zeroes of a multivariate polynomial on a product set. This lemma motivates the multiplicity codes of Kopparty, Saraf and Yekhanin [J. ACM, 2014], who showed how to use this lemma to construct high-rate locally-decodable codes. However, the algorithmic results about these codes crucially rely on the fact that the polynomials are evaluated on a vector space and not an arbitrary product set. In this work, we show how to decode multivariate multiplicity codes of large multiplicities in polynomial time over finite product sets …
We give some natural sufficient conditions for balls in a metric space to have small intersection. Roughly speaking, this happens when the metric space is (i) expanding and (ii) well-spread, and (iii) a certain random variable on the boundary of a ball has a small tail. As applications, we show that the volume of intersection of balls in Hamming, Johnson spaces and symmetric groups decay exponentially as their centers drift apart. To verify condition (iii), we prove some large deviation inequalities `on a slice' for functions with Lipschitz conditions. We then use these estimates on intersecti…
We study the classical expander codes, introduced by Sipser and Spielman \cite{SS96}. Given any constants $0< α, \varepsilon < 1/2$, and an arbitrary bipartite graph with $N$ vertices on the left, $M < N$ vertices on the right, and left degree $D$ such that any left subset $S$ of size at most $αN$ has at least $(1-\varepsilon)|S|D$ neighbors, we show that the corresponding linear code given by parity checks on the right has distance at least roughly $\frac{αN}{2 \varepsilon }$. This is strictly better than the best known previous result of $2(1-\varepsilon ) αN$ \cite{Sudan2000note, Viderman13…
