In this note, a class of error-correcting codes is associated to a toric variety associated to a fan defined over a finite field $\fff_q$, analogous to the class of Goppa codes associated to a curve. For such a ``toric code'' satisfying certain additional conditions, we present an efficient decoding algorithm for the dual of a Goppa code. Many examples are given. For small $q$, many of these codes have parameters beating the Gilbert-Varshamov bound. In fact, using toric codes, we construct a $(n,k,d)=(49,11,28)$ code over $\fff_8$, which is better than any other known code listed in Brouwer's on-line tables for that $n$ and $k$.
A theory for constructing quantum error correcting codes from Toric surfaces by the Calderbank-Shor-Steane method is presented. In particular we study the method on toric Hirzebruch surfaces. The results are obtained by constructing a dualizing differential form for the toric surface and by using the cohomology and the intersection theory of toric varieties. In earlier work the author developed methods to construct linear error correcting codes from toric varieties and derive the code parameters using the cohomology and the intersection theory on toric varieties. This method is generalized in …
In this paper we give lower bounds for the minimum distance of evaluation codes constructed from complete intersections in toric varieties. This generalizes the results of Gold-Little-Schenck and Ballico-Fontanari who considered evaluation codes on complete intersections in the projective space.
Long linear codes constructed from toric varieties over finite fields, their multiplicative structure and decoding. The main theme is the inherent multiplicative structure on toric codes. The multiplicative structure allows for \emph{decoding}, resembling the decoding of Reed-Solomon codes and aligns with decoding by error correcting pairs. We have used the multiplicative structure on toric codes to construct linear secret sharing schemes with \emph{strong multiplication} via Massey's construction generalizing the Shamir Linear secret sharing shemes constructed from Reed-Solomon codes. We have…
In this paper we study duality for evaluation codes on intersections of d hypersurfaces with given d-dimensional Newton polytopes, so called toric complete intersection codes. In particular, we give a condition for such a code to be quasi-self-dual. In the case of d=2 it reduces to a combinatorial condition on the Newton polygons. This allows us to give an explicit construction of dual and quasi-self-dual toric complete intersection codes. We provide a list of examples over the field of 16 elements.
This note presents some new information on how the minimum distance of the generalized toric code corresponding to a fixed set of integer lattice points S in R^2 varies with the base field. The main results show that in some cases, over sufficiently large fields, the minimum distance of the code corresponding to a set S will be the same as that of the code corresponding to the convex hull of S. In an example, we will also discuss a [49,12,28] generalized toric code over GF(8), better than any previously known code according to M. Grassl's online tables, as of July 2011.
This paper is concerned with the minimum distance computation for higher dimensional toric codes defined by lattice polytopes. We show that the minimum distance is multiplicative with respect to taking the product of polytopes, and behaves in a simple way when one builds a k-dilate of a pyramid over a polytope. This allows us to construct a large class of examples of higher dimensional toric codes where we can compute the minimum distance explicitly.
Toric codes are a class of $m$-dimensional cyclic codes introduced recently by J. Hansen. They may be defined as evaluation codes obtained from monomials corresponding to integer lattice points in an integral convex polytope $P \subseteq \R^m$. As such, they are in a sense a natural extension of Reed-Solomon codes. Several authors have used intersection theory on toric surfaces to derive bounds on the minimum distance of some toric codes with $m = 2$. In this paper, we will provide a more elementary approach that applies equally well to many toric codes for all $m \ge 2$. Our methods are based…
Any integral convex polytope $P$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$ provides a $N$-dimensional toric variety $X_P$ and an ample divisor $D_P$ on this variety. This paper gives an explicit construction of the algebraic geometric error-correcting code on $X_P$ , obtained by evaluating global section of $\mathcal{L}(D_P)$ on every rational point of $X_P$. This work presents an extension of toric codes analogous to the one of Reed-Muller codes into projective ones, by evaluating on the whole variety instead of considering only points with non-zero coordinates. The dimension of the code is given in terms of the num…
Toric varieties and their associated toric codes, as well as determination of their parameters with intersection theory, are presented in the two dimensional case. Linear Secret Sharing Schemes with strong multiplication are constructed from toric varieties and codes by the J. L. Massey construction. Asymmetric Quantum Codes are obtained from toric codes by the A.R. Calderbank, P.W. Shor and A.M. Steane construction of stabilizer codes from linear codes containing their dual codes. Decoding of a class of toric codes is presented.
In this paper we prove new lower bounds for the minimum distance of a toric surface code defined by a convex lattice polygon P. The bounds involve a geometric invariant L(P), called the full Minkowski length of P which can be easily computed for any given P.
A toric code is an error-correcting code determined by a toric variety or its associated integral convex polytope. We investigate $4$- and $5$-dimensional toric $3$-fold codes, which are codes arising from polytopes in $\mathbf{R}^3$ with four and five lattice points, respectively. By computing the minimum distances of each code, we fully classify the $4$-dimensional codes. We further present progress toward the same goal for dimension $5$ codes. In particular, we classify the $5$-dimensional toric $3$-fold codes arising from polytopes of width 1.
We define a statistical measure of the typical size of short words in a linear code over a finite field. We prove that the dual toric codes coming from polytopes of degree one are characterized, among all dual toric codes, by being extremal with respect to this measure. We also give a geometric interpretation of the minimum distance of dual toric codes and characterize its extremal values. Finally, we obtain formulas for the parameters of both primal and dual toric codes associated to polytopes of degree one.
Toric surface codes are a class of error-correcting codes coming from a lattice polytope defining a two-dimensional toric variety. Previous authors have mostly completed classifications of these toric surface codes with dimension up to $k = 7.$ In this note, we correct an error in the classification of the $k=7$ case started in \cite{HLYZZ}, and disprove one of their conjectures.
Asymmetric quantum error-correcting codes are quantum codes defined over biased quantum channels: qubit-flip and phase-shift errors may have equal or different probabilities. The code construction is the Calderbank-Shor-Steane construction based on two linear codes. We present families of toric surfaces, toric codes and associated asymmetric quantum error-correcting codes.
Let $X$ be a complete simplicial toric variety over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ with homogeneous coordinate ring $S=\mathbb{F}_q[x_1,\dots,x_r]$ and split torus $T_X\cong (\mathbb{F}^*_q)^n$. We prove that vanishing ideal of a subset $Y$ of the torus $T_X$ is a lattice ideal if and only if $Y$ is a subgroup. We show that these subgroups are exactly those subsets that are parameterized by Laurents monomials. We give an algorithm for determining this parametrization if the subgroup is the zero locus of a lattice ideal in the torus. We also show that vanishing ideals of subgroups of $T_X$ are r…
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the nonsingular projective toric variety associated to a finite simple graph to be Fano or weak Fano in terms of the graph.
Let $X$ be a complete $n$-dimensional simplicial toric variety with homogeneous coordinate ring $S$. We study the multigraded Hilbert function $H_Y$ of reduced $0$-dimensional subschemes $Y$ in $X$. We provide explicit formulas and prove non-decreasing and stabilization properties of $H_Y$ when $Y$ is a $0$-dimensional complete intersection in $X$. We apply our results to computing the dimension of some evaluation codes on $0$-dimensional complete intersection in simplicial toric varieties.
We show how the theory of affine geometries over the ring ${\mathbb Z}/\langle q - 1\rangle$ can be used to understand the properties of toric and generalized toric codes over ${\mathbb F}_q$. The minimum distance of these codes is strongly tied to the collections of lines in the finite geometry that contain subsets of the exponent vectors of the monomials that are evaluated to produce the standard generator matrix for the code. We argue that this connection is, in fact, even more direct than the connection with the lattice geometry of those exponent vectors considered as elements of ${\mathbb…
Any toric Deligne-Mumford stack is a $μ$-gerbe over the underlying toric orbifold for a finite abelian group $μ$. In this paper we give a sufficient condition so that certain kinds of gerbes over a toric Deligne-Mumford stack are again toric Deligne-Mumford stacks.
Toric codes are evaluation codes obtained from an integral convex polytope $P \subset \R^n$ and finite field $\F_q$. They are, in a sense, a natural extension of Reed-Solomon codes, and have been studied recently by J. Hansen and D. Joyner. In this paper, we obtain upper and lower bounds on the minimum distance of a toric code constructed from a polygon $P \subset \R^2$ by examining Minkowski sum decompositions of subpolygons of $P$. Our results give a simple and unifying explanation of bounds of Hansen and empirical results of Joyner; they also apply to previously unknown cases.
From a rational convex polytope of dimension $r\ge 2$ J.P. Hansen constructed an error correcting code of length $n=(q-1)^r$ over the finite field $\fq$. A rational convex polytope is the same datum as a normal toric variety and a Cartier divisor. The code is obtained evaluating rational functions of the toric variety defined by the polytope at the algebraic torus, and it is an evaluation code in the sense of Goppa. We compute the dimension of the code using cohomology. The minimum distance is estimated using intersection theory and mixed volumes, extending the methods of J.P. Hansen for plane…
In the article we construct low-rate non-split toric $q$-ary codes on some singular surfaces. More precisely, we consider non-split toric cubic and quartic del Pezzo surfaces, whose singular points are $\mathbb{F}_{\!q}$-conjugate. Our codes turn out to be BCH ones with sufficiently large minimum distance $d$. Indeed, we prove that $d - d^* \geqslant q - \lfloor 2\sqrt{q} \rfloor - 1$, where $d^*$ is the designed minimum distance. In other words, we significantly improve upon BCH bound. On the other hand, the defect of the Griesmer bound for the new codes is $\leqslant \lfloor 2\sqrt{q} \rfloo…
Let $X$ be a complete simplicial toric variety over a finite field with a split torus $T_X$. For any matrix $Q$, we are interested in the subgroup $Y_Q$ of $T_X$ parameterized by the columns of $Q$. We give an algorithm for obtaining a basis for the unique lattice $L$ whose lattice ideal $I_L$ is $I(Y_Q)$. We also give two direct algorithmic methods to compute the order of $Y_Q$, which is the length of the corresponding code ${\cC}_{å,Y_Q}$. We share procedures implementing them in \verb|Macaulay2|. Finally, we give a lower bound for the minimum distance of ${\cC}_{å,Y_Q}$, taking advantage of…
From a finite set in a lattice, we can define a toric variety embedded in a projective space. In this paper, we give a combinatorial description of the dual defect of the toric variety using the structure of the finite set as a Cayley sum with suitable conditions. We also interpret the description geometrically.
Let K be a finite field and let X be a subset of a projective space, over the field K, which is parameterized by monomials arising from the edges of a clutter. We show some estimates for the degree-complexity, with respect to the revlex order, of the vanishing ideal I(X) of X. If the clutter is uniform, we classify the complete intersection property of I(X) using linear algebra. We show an upper bound for the minimum distance of certain parameterized linear codes along with certain estimates for the algebraic invariants of I(X).
Let $R$ be the coordinate ring of an affine toric variety. We show that the endomorphism ring $End_R(\mathbb A),$ where $\mathbb A$ is the (finite) direct sum of all (isomorphism classes of) conic $R$-modules, has finite global dimension. Furthermore, we show that $End_R(\mathbb A)$ is a non-commutative crepant resolution if and only if the toric variety is simplicial. For toric varieties over a perfect field $k$ of prime characteristic, we show that the ring of differential operators $D_\mathsf{k}(R)$ has finite global dimension.
We show the finite generation of certain invariant graded algebras defined on toric weak log Fano fibrations. These are the toric version of FGA algebras, recently introduced by Shokurov in connections to the existence of flips.
We prove that the cohomology of the moduli space of morphisms of a fixed finite degree from a smooth projective curve $C$ of genus $g$ to a complete simplicial toric variety $\mathbb{P}(Σ)$, denoted by the rational polyhedral fan $Σ$, stabilizes. As an arithmetic consequence we obtain a resolution of the Batyrev-Manin conjecture for toric varieties over global function fields in all but finitely many characteristics.
