We address the question of understanding the production of $J/ψ$ particles regarding the global underlying event in proton-proton collisions. To do so, we propose to look at a new observable: the $J/ψ$ production as a function of the charged particles multiplicity of the event. We demonstrate the interest for an experimental measurement by varying the model of multiple interactions in the PYTHIA generator.
This paper presents multiplicity measurements that have been performed with ALICE based on minimum-bias data at 0.9 and 2.36 TeV. Results are shown of the pseudorapidity density and the multiplicity distribution in different phase space windows. The analysis and correction procedures are discussed and the results are compared to previous measurements and to model predictions.
Measurements of differential cross sections are presented for the production of a Z boson and at least one hadronic jet in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, recorded by the CMS detector, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 inverse femtobarns. The jet multiplicity distribution is measured for up to six jets. The differential cross sections are measured as a function of jet transverse momentum and pseudorapidity for the four highest transverse momentum jets. The distribution of the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta is also measured as a function of …
Proton-Proton ($pp$) collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are simulated in order to study events with a high local density of charged particles produced in narrow pseudorapidty windows of $Δη$ = 0.1, 0.2, and 0.5. The $pp$ collisions are generated at center of mass energies of $\sqrt{s} = 2.36$, $7$, $8$, and $13$ TeV, i.e. the energies at which the LHC has operated so far, using PYTHIA and HERWIG event generators. We have also studied the average of the maximum charged-particle density versus the event multiplicity for all events, using the different pseudorapidity windows. This stud…
The pseudorapidity density and multiplicity distribution of charged particles produced in proton-proton collisions at the LHC, at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV, were measured in the central pseudorapidity region |$η$| < 1. Comparisons are made with previous measurements at $\sqrt{s}$ = 0.9 TeV and 2.36 TeV. At $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV, for events with at least one charged particle in |$η$| < 1, we obtain dNch/deta = 6.01 $\pm$ 0.01 (stat.) $^{+0.20}_{-0.12}$ (syst.). This corresponds to an increase of 57.6% $\pm$ 0.4% (stat.) $^{+3.6}_{-1.8}$% (syst.) relative to collisions at 0.9 TeV, …
The study of the sphericity of primary charged particles in minimum bias proton-proton collisions at 0.9, 2.76 and 7 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC is presented. The mean sphericity as a function of multiplicity is reported for events with different hardness. The ALICE results show a growing transverse sphericity with multiplicity for all collision energies, with a steeper rise at low multiplicity. The tendency of the MC generators is opposite at high multiplicity.
The average total energy as well as its hadronic and electromagnetic components are measured with the CMS detector at pseudorapidities $-$6.6 $<$ $η$ $<-$5.2 in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV. The results are presented as a function of the charged particle multiplicity in the region $|η|$ $<$ 2. This measurement is sensitive to correlations induced by the underlying event structure over a very wide pseudorapidity region. The predictions of Monte Carlo event generators commonly used in collider experiments and ultra-high energy cosmic ray physics are com…
Characteristics of multi-particle production in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV are studied as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity, N[ch]. The produced particles are separated into two classes: those belonging to jets and those belonging to the underlying event. Charged particles are measured with pseudorapidity abs(eta) < 2.4 and transverse momentum pt > 0.25 GeV. Jets are reconstructed from charged-particles only and required to have pt > 5 GeV. The distributions of jet pt, average pt of charged particles belonging to the underlying event or to jets, jet rates, and je…
The multiplicity (N_ch) and pseudorapidity distribution (dN_ch/dη) of primary charged particles in p+p collisions at Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies of \sqrt(s) = 10 and 14 TeV are obtained from extrapolation of existing measurements at lower \sqrt(s). These distributions are then compared to calculations from PYTHIA and PHOJET models. The existing \sqrt(s) measurements are unable to distinguish between a logarithmic and power law dependence of the average charged particle multiplicity (<N_ch>) on \sqrt(s), and their extrapolation to energies accessible at LHC give very different values. …
A search for new phenomena in final states characterized by high jet multiplicity, an isolated lepton (electron or muon) and either zero or at least three $b$-tagged jets is presented. The search uses 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider in 2015 and 2016. The dominant sources of background are estimated using parameterized extrapolations, based on observables at medium jet multiplicity, to predict the $b$-tagged jet multiplicity distribution at the higher jet multiplicities used in the search. No signi…
This paper briefly reviews the striking experimental observation of a ridge-like dihadron correlation structure in high multiplicity proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Recent progress of both experimental and theoretical efforts on understanding the physical origin of the novel effect is reviewed. Outlook on future direction of possible new studies is discussed.
Multiplicity distributions of charged particles for pp collisions at LHC Run 1 energies, from $\sqrt{s}=$ 0.9 to 8 TeV are measured over a wide pseudorapidity range ($-3.4<η<5.0$) for the first time. The results are obtained using the Forward Multiplicity Detector and the Silicon Pixel Detector within ALICE. The results are compared to Monte Carlo simulations, and to the IP-Glasma model.
A dedicated search is presented for new phenomena in inclusive eight- and ten-jet final states with low missing transverse momentum, with and without identification of jets originating from b quarks. The analysis is based on data from proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.6 inverse femtobarns collected with the CMS detector at the LHC at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV. The dominant multijet background expectations are obtained from low jet multiplicity control samples. Data agree well with the standard model background predictions, and limits are set in several benchmark mo…
The $t\bar{t}$ production cross-section dependence on jet multiplicity and jet transverse momentum is reported for proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV in the single-lepton channel. The data were collected with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and comprise the full 2011 data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb$^{-1}$. Differential cross-sections are presented as a function of the jet multiplicity for up to eight jets using jet transverse momentum thresholds of 25, 40, 60, and 80 GeV, and as a function of jet transverse momentu…
Charged-particle production was studied in proton-proton collisions collected at the LHC with the ALICE detector at centre-of-mass energies 0.9 TeV and 2.36 TeV in the pseudorapidity range |$η$| < 1.4. In the central region (|$η$| < 0.5), at 0.9 TeV, we measure charged-particle pseudorapidity density dNch/deta = 3.02 $\pm$ 0.01 (stat.) $^{+0.08}_{-0.05}$ (syst.) for inelastic interactions, and dNch/deta = 3.58 $\pm$ 0.01 (stat.) $^{+0.12}_{-0.12}$ (syst.) for non-single-diffractive interactions. At 2.36 TeV, we find dNch/deta = 3.77 $\pm$ 0.01 (stat.) $^{+0.25}_{-0.12}$ (syst.) for inelastic, …
Recent measurements performed in high-multiplicity proton-proton (pp) and proton-lead (p-Pb) collisions have shown features that are reminiscent of those observed in lead-lead (Pb-Pb) collisions. These observations warrant a comprehensive measurement of the production of identified particles. We report on the production of \allparts at mid-rapidity measured as a function of multiplicity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV with the ALICE experiment. Spectral shapes studied both for individual particles and via particle ratios such as ($Λ/K^{0}_{S}$) as a function of $p_{T}$ exhibit an evolut…
A search for new physics in energetic, high-multiplicity final states has been performed using proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 inverse femtobarns. The standard model background, dominated by multijet production, is determined exclusively from control regions in data. No statistically significant excess of events is observed. Model-independent limits on the product of the cross section and the acceptance of a new physics signal in these final states are set and further interpre…
The pseudorapidity density and multiplicity distributions of charged particles have been the first measurements carried out with the ALICE detector at the LHC. After an introduction on the experiment and some details on the subdetectors relevant for these measurements, results from minimum bias proton-proton collisions at 0.9, 2.36 and 7 TeV are presented. Comparisons with other measurements and model predictions are also discussed.
The completion of Run 1 of the CERN Large Hadron Collider has seen the discovery of the Higgs boson and an unprecedented number of precise measurements of the Standard Model, while Run 2 operation has just started to provide first data at higher energy. Upgrades of the LHC to high luminosity (HL-LHC) and the experiments (ATLAS, CMS, ALICE and LHCb) will exploit the full potential of the collider to discover and explore new physics beyond the Standard Model. In this article, the experimental challenges and the physics opportunities in proton-proton collisions at the HL-LHC are reviewed.
At LHC energies, the charged-particle multiplicity dependence of particle production is a topic of considerable interest in $pp$ collisions. It has been argued that multiple partonic interactions play an important role in particle production mechanisms, not only affecting the soft processes but also the hard processes. Recently, ALICE has measured $J/ψ$ production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity to study the correlation between soft and hard processes. In this contribution, we present the $J/ψ$ production versus multiplicity for $pp$ and $p-Pb$ collisions measured by ALICE. We c…
We present the first preliminary results on photon multiplicity measurements at LHC at forward pseudorapidity (2.3 $\textless$ $η$ $\textless$ 3.9) in proton-proton ($pp$) collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV. The multiplicity distribution is found to be reasonably well explained by a double Negative Binomial Distribution (NBD). The average photon multiplicity increases logarithmically with $\sqrt{s}$. It is found that none of the models we used (PYTHIA6D6T, PHOJET, and HERWIG) could explain the data.
We present the charged-particle multiplicity distributions over a wide pseudorapidity range ($-3.4<η<5.0$) for pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 0.9, 7, and 8 TeV at the LHC. Results are based on information from the Silicon Pixel Detector and the Forward Multiplicity Detector of ALICE, extending the pseudorapidity coverage of the earlier publications and the high-multiplicity reach. The measurements are compared to results from the CMS experiment and to PYTHIA, PHOJET and EPOS LHC event generators, as well as IP-Glasma calculations.
Measurements of the sphericity of primary charged particles in minimum bias proton--proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=0.9$, 2.76 and 7 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC are presented. The observable is linearized to be collinear safe and is measured in the plane perpendicular to the beam direction using primary charged tracks with $p_{\rm T}\geq0.5$ GeV/c in $|η|\leq0.8$. The mean sphericity as a function of the charged particle multiplicity at mid-rapidity ($N_{\rm ch}$) is reported for events with different $p_{\rm T}$ scales ("soft" and "hard") defined by the transverse momentum of the le…
It is argued that the multiplicity distribution in proton-proton ($pp$) collisions, which is often parameterized by the negative binomial distribution, may result from the multiplicity distribution measured in electron-positron ($e^{+}e^{-}$) collisions, once the fluctuating energy carried by two leading protons in $pp$ is taken into account.
We investigate properties of jets in proton-proton collisions using two-particle angular correlations. By choosing an analysis approach based on two-particle angular correlations, also the properties of low-energetic jets can be accessed. Observing the strength of the correlation as a function of the charged particle multiplicity reveals jet fragmentation properties as well as the contribution of jets to the overall charged particle multiplicity. Furthermore, the analysis discloses information on the underlying multiple parton interactions. We present results from proton-proton collisions at t…
We analyze the structure of the high multiplicity events observed by the CMS collaboration at the LHC. We argue that the bulk of the observed correlations is due to the production of a pair of jets with p_t > 15 GeV/c. We also suggest that high multiplicity events are due to a combination of three effects: high underlying multiplicity for collisions at small impact parameters, upward fluctuations of the gluon density in the colliding protons, and production of hadrons in the fragmentation of dijets. The data analysis is suggested which may clarify the underlying dynamics of the high multiplici…
This article summarizes and critically reviews measurements of charged-particle multiplicity distributions and pseudorapidity densities in p+p(pbar) collisions between sqrt(s) = 23.6 GeV and sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. Related theoretical concepts are briefly introduced. Moments of multiplicity distributions are presented as a function of sqrt(s). Feynman scaling, KNO scaling, as well as the description of multiplicity distributions with a single negative binomial distribution and with combinations of two or more negative binomial distributions are discussed. Moreover, similarities between the energy d…
The production rates and the transverse momentum distribution of strange hadrons at mid-rapidity ($\ |y\ | < 0.5$) are measured in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV as a function of the charged particle multiplicity, using the ALICE detector at the LHC. The production rates of $\rm{K}^{0}_{S}$, $Λ$, $Ξ$, and $Ω$ increase with the multiplicity faster than what is reported for inclusive charged particles. The increase is found to be more pronounced for hadrons with a larger strangeness content. Possible auto-correlations between the charged particles and the strange hadrons are eva…
Heavy quarks (charm and beauty) are produced in hard-scattering processes and the study of their production in proton--proton (pp) collisions is an important test for calculations based on perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD). Heavy-flavor production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity provides insight into the processes occurring at the partonic level and the interplay between the hard and soft particle production mechanisms in pp collisions. In this contribution, measurements of open heavy-flavor production as a function of multiplicity, via the study of the $\mathrm{D}$-mes…
Prompt D meson and non-prompt J/$ψ$ yields are studied as a function of the multiplicity of charged particles produced in inelastic proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV. The results are reported as a ratio between yields in a given multiplicity interval normalised to the multiplicity-integrated ones (relative yields). They are shown as a function of the multiplicity of charged particles normalised to the average value for inelastic collisions (relative charged-particle multiplicity). D$^0$, D$^+$ and D$^{*+}$ mesons are measured in five $p_{\rm T}$ intervals …
The production of prompt $D^{0}$, $D^{+}_{\rm s}$, and $Λ_{\rm c}^{+}$ hadrons, and their ratios, $D^{+}_{\rm s}$/$D^{0}$ and $Λ_{\rm c}^{+}$/$D^{0}$, are measured in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV at midrapidity ($|y| <0.5$) with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The measurements are performed as a function of the charm-hadron transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) in intervals of charged-particle multiplicity, measured with two multiplicity estimators covering different pseudorapidity regions. While the strange to non-strange $D^{+}_{\rm s}$/$D^{0}$ ratio indicates no significant mu…
Two-particle pseudorapidity correlations are measured in $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 2.76 TeV Pb+Pb, $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV $p$+Pb, and $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV $pp$ collisions at the LHC, with total integrated luminosities of approximately 7 $μ\mathrm{b}^{-1}$, 28 $\mathrm{nb}^{-1}$, and 65 $\mathrm{nb}^{-1}$, respectively. The correlation function $C_{\rm N}(η_1,η_2)$ is measured as a function of event multiplicity using charged particles in the pseudorapidity range $|η|<2.4$. The correlation function contains a significant short-range component, which is estimated and subtracted. After remov…
The self-normalised $ψ(2S)$ yields as a function of charged-particle multiplicity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV and p--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$= 8.16 TeV, using the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC, are reported in these proceedings. This measurement represents one of the main tools to understand the role of multiparton interactions and their influence on charmonium production in small systems, i.e pp and pA collisions. The ratio of $ψ(2S)$-over-J/$ψ$ as a function of charged-particle multiplicity is also presented for both pp and p--Pb collisions. The comparison to th…
Results from the photon multiplicity measurements using a fine granularity preshower photon multiplicity detector (PMD) at CERN SPS are discussed. These include study of pseudo-rapidity distributions of photons, scaling of photon multiplicity with number of participating nucleons, centrality dependence of mean transverse momentum of photons, event-by-event fluctuations in photon multiplicity and localised charged-neutral fluctuations. Basic features of the PMD to be used in STAR experiment at RHIC and in ALICE experiment at LHC are also discussed.
The production of the $K_S^0$ meson in high multiplicity $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV is investigated considering the hybrid formalism and the solution of the running coupling Balitsky - Kovchegov equation. The associated cross section is estimated and compared with the experimental data for the transverse momentum spectrum. Moreover, we analyze the self-normalized yields of $K_S^0$ mesons as a function of the multiplicity of coproduced charged hadrons and demonstrate that a steep increasing is theoretically predicted. A comparison with the ALICE data is presented considering two dis…
At sufficiently high temperature and energy density, nuclear matter undergoes a transition to a phase in which quarks and gluons are not confined: the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) [1]. Such an extreme state of strongly-interacting QCD (Quantum Chromo-Dynamics) matter is produced in the laboratory with high-energy collisions of heavy nuclei, where an enhanced production of strange hadrons is observed [2-6]. Strangeness enhancement, originally proposed as a signature of QGP formation in nuclear collisions [7], is more pronounced for multi-strange baryons. Several effects typical of heavy-ion phenome…
These proceedings describe the charged-particle pseudorapidity densities and multiplicity distributions measured by the ALICE detector in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 0.9$ and 7 TeV in specific phase space regions. The pseudorapidity range $|η| < 0.8$, together with $p_{\rm T}$ cuts at 0.15, 0.5 and 1 GeV/$c$ is considered. The classes of events considered are those having at least one charged particle in the kinematical ranges just described. The results obtained by ALICE are compared to Monte Carlo predictions.
Multiplicity dependencies of midrapidity transverse momentum distributions of identified charged particles in inelastic proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), measured by ALICE Collaboration, have been analyzed. The full abstract with important results on the established effective temperature versus energy density dependence, estimated critical energy densities for probable deconfinement phase transition in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energy of 7 and 13 TeV and other results is given in the manuscript file.
Experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have measured multiplicity distributions in proton-proton collisions at a new domain of center-of-mass energy ($\sqrt {s}$) in limited pseudorapidity intervals. We analyze multiplicity distribution data of proton-proton collisions at LHC energies as measured by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment in terms of characteristic parameters of the Negative Binomial Distribution (NBD) function that has played a significant role in describing multiplicity distribution data of particle production in high energy physics experiments, in the pre-LHC ene…
We discuss the production of $D$-mesons and $J/ψ$ in high multiplicity proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions within the Color-Glass-Condensate (CGC) framework. We demonstrate that the modification of the LHC data on $D$ and $J/ψ$ yields in high multiplicity events relative to minimum bias events arise from a significant enhancement of the gluon saturation scales of the corresponding rare parton configurations in the colliding protons and nuclei. For a given event multiplicity, we predict these relative yields to be energy independent from $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV at RHIC to the highest LHC ene…
Potential of the charm quark as a probe to study the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) is best harnessed when its production mechanisms are disentangled from its propagation through the QGP. Proton-proton (pp) collisions help us to study charmed hadron production mechanisms. The measurement of D-meson yields in pp collisions as a function of the multiplicity of produced particles allows one to gain some insight into the processes occurring in the collision at a microscopic level. Here, the preliminary results are presented from this measurement at \sqrt{s} = 7 TeV. The analysis strategy, the applied co…
Proton-proton collisions at new high energies ($\sqrt {s}=$2.36 and 7 TeV) at LHC resulted into a greater mean multiplicities ($<e n >$) of charged particles in the mid-rapidity region than estimated $< n >$s by different models and event generators. Another significant observation in multiplicity data is a change in slope in the distribution of primary charged hadrons in pseudorapidity intervals $|η|<2.4$ at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV. These new observations merit further studies. We consider a two-component model of particle production to analyze the multiplicity distributions of charged hadrons fro…
We demonstrate that the recent measurement of azimuthally collimated, long range rapidity ("ridge") correlations in $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV proton-proton (p+p) collisions by the ATLAS collaboration at the LHC are in agreement with expectations from the color glass condensate effective theory of high energy QCD. The observation that the integrated near side yield as a function of multiplicity is independent of collision energy is a natural consequence of the fact that multiparticle production is driven by a single semi-hard saturation scale in the color glass condensate framework. We argue further th…
Prevalent models of multi-particle production in relativistic pp collisions at pre-LHC energies, fail to provide convincing explanations to certain significant features of the final-state charged particles in high-multiplicity pp events at the LHC. This article presents a study, contrasting those features, usually interpreted as collective behaviour of particle production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, in the framework of hydrodynamic EPOS3 model, emphasizing quantitative comparison between the data and the model-based simulation in the same kinematic ranges, for better cognizance of th…
Small system collectivity observed at the LHC energies along with enhancement of strangeness makes high-multiplicity proton+proton (pp) collisions very interesting in order to look for QGP-like features, usually found in heavy-ion collisions. It may be interesting to perform a double differential study of different observables in pp collisions in terms of charged particle multiplicity and event shape in order to understand the new dimensions in high-multiplicity pp physics. We study the correlation between the number of multi-partonic interactions (nMPI), event shape (transverse spherocity) an…
We present the measurements of particle pair yields per trigger particle obtained from di-hadron azimuthal correlations in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 0.9$, $2.76$, and $7$ TeV recorded with the ALICE detector. The yields are studied as a function of the charged particle multiplicity. Taken together with the single particle yields the pair yields provide information about parton fragmentation at low transverse momenta, as well as on the contribution of multiple parton interactions to particle production. Data are compared to calculations using the PYTHIA6, PYTHIA8, and PHOJET event generators…
One of the key results of the LHC Run 1 was the observation of an enhanced production of strange particles in high multiplicity pp and p--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 7 and 5.02 TeV, respectively. The strangeness enhancement is investigated by measuring the evolution with multiplicity of single-strange and multi-strange baryon production relative to non-strange particles. A smooth increase of strange particle yields relative to the non-strange ones with event multiplicity has been observed in such systems. We report the latest results on multiplicity dependence of strange and mult…
Heavy quarks are produced in the early stages of ultra-relativistic hadron collisions via hard scatterings and are an important tool for studying different aspects of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) in hadronic collisions. Charged-particle multiplicity gives information on the global characteristics of the event and could be used to characterize particle production mechanisms. In hadronic collisions at Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies, there is a significant contribution of multi-parton interactions. The measurement of heavy-flavour yields as a function of charged-particle multiplicity gives …

Proton-proton collisions at new high energies ($\sqrt {s} =$ 2.36 and 7 TeV) at LHC resulted into greater mean multiplicities ($<n>$) of charged particles in the mid-rapidity region than estimated ones by different models and event generators. Another significant observation in multiplicity data is the change in slope in the distribution of primary charged hadrons in symmetric pseudorapidity interval $|η|<$2.4. The change is most prominent with data at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV. These new observations merit further studies. We consider a two-component model of particle production to analyze multiplic…
Due to the large masses of beauty and charm quarks, their production cross sections can be computed in the framework of perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics. The correlation of quarkonium and open heavy-flavour hadron yields with charged particles produced in proton-proton (pp) and proton-lead (p-Pb) collisions can shed light on the interplay between hard and soft mechanisms in particle production. In this proceeding the results from D-meson and J/$ψ$ yields as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity in pp and p-Pb collisions are presented. Comparisons to theoretical models are also dis…
Azimuthal correlation studies of heavy-flavour particles with charged particles in p--Pb collisions can give an insight into the cold nuclear matter effects \cite{Andronic:2015wma} on heavy-quark production and hadronization into heavy-flavour jets. Multiplicity-dependent measurements of angular correlations of heavy-flavour particles with charged hadrons allow us to investigate the collective behavior of the system and the initial state effects on heavy flavour hadron production. In addition, they can reveal possible modifications of the heavy-quark fragmentation and hadronization at differen…
We provide quantitative predictions for the rapidity, centrality and energy dependencies of inclusive charged-hadron productions for the forthcoming LHC measurements in nucleus-nucleus collisions based on the idea of gluon saturation in the color-glass condensate framework. Our formulation gives very good descriptions of the first data from the LHC for the inclusive charged-hadron production in proton-proton collisions, the deep inelastic scattering at HERA at small Bjorken-x, and the hadron multiplicities in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC.
Quarkonium production as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity could provide an insight into particle production processes at the partonic level in hadronic collisions. It is believed that multiple partonic interactions play an important role in particle production and affect both soft and hard processes. The study of correlations between quarkonia and charged-particle multiplicity may provide information about this. In this contribution, ALICE measurements of J$/ψ$ and $Υ$ production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity are presented for pp collisions at center-of-mass ene…
We construct a multiplicity distribution characterized by large factorial cumulants (integrated correlation functions) from a simple combination of two ordinary multiplicity distributions characterized by small factorial cumulants. We find that such a model, which could be interpreted as representing two event classes, reproduces the preliminary data for the proton cumulants measured by the STAR collaboration at $7.7$ GeV very well. This model then predicts very large values for the fifth and sixth order factorial cumulants, which can be tested in experiment.
