Applying newly developed dynamical density matrix renormalization group techniques at zero and finite temperatures to a Hubbard-Holstein model at half-filling, we examine the optical conductivity of a typical one-dimensional Mott insulator Sr_2CuO_3. We find a set of parameters in the Hubbard-Holstein model, which can describe optical conductivity for both Mott-gap excitation in the high-energy region and phonon-assisted spin excitation in the low-energy region. We also find that electron-phonon interaction gives additional broadening in the temperature dependence of the Mott-gap excitation.
Mott gap excitations in the high-Tc superconductor of the optimal doped YBa2Cu3O7-d (Tc = 93 K) have been studied by the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering method. Anisotropic spectra in the ab-plane are observed in a twin-free crystal. The excitation from the one-dimensional CuO chain is enhanced at 2 eV near the zone boundary of the b* direction, while the excitation from the CuO2 plane is broad at 1.5-4 eV and almost independent of the momentum transfer. Theoretical calculation based on the one-dimensional and two-dimensional Hubbard model reproduces the observed spectra by taking the diff…
The heat carriers responsible for the unexpectedly large thermal Hall conductivity of the cuprate Mott insulator La$_2$CuO$_4$ were recently shown to be phonons. However, the mechanism by which phonons in cuprates acquire chirality in a magnetic field is still unknown. Here, we report a similar thermal Hall conductivity in two cuprate Mott insulators with significantly different crystal structures and magnetic orders - Nd$_2$CuO$_4$ and Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ - and show that two potential mechanisms can be excluded - the scattering of phonons by rare-earth impurities and by structural domains. Ou…
High critical temperature cuprate superconducting materials are composed of copper oxide layers and interlayer charge reservoirs. When not doped, these cuprates are antiferromagnetic insulators. We propose to design new materials by combining alternating layers of parents of hole-doped and electron-doped of these cuprates and modifications thereof. Our goal is to find undoped cuprates that can be either an antiferromagnetic insulator or a quantum metal. The term quantum metal means a metal characterized by long range antiferromagnetic order or only strong antiferromagnetic correlations, i.e., …
We report measurements of the specific heat and the thermal conductivity of the model Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain cuprate Sr$_{2}$CuO$_{3}$ at low temperatures. In addition to a nearly isotropic phonon heat transport, we find a quasi one-dimensional excess thermal conductivity along the chain direction, most likely associated with spin excitations (spinons). The spinon energy current is limited mainly by scattering on defects and phonons. Analyzing the specific heat data, the intrachain magnetic exchange $J/k_{B}$ is estimated to be 2650 K.
The spectral properties of a one-dimensional (1D) single-chain Mott insulator Sr$_2$CuO$_{3}$ have been studied in angle-resolved photoemission and optical spectroscopy, at half filling and with small concentrations of extra charge doped into the chains via high oxygen pressure growth. The single- particle gap is reduced with oxygen doping, but the metallic state is not reached. The bandwidth of the charge-transfer band increases with doping, while the state becomes narrower, allowing unambiguous observation of separated spinon and holon branches in the doped system. The optical gap is not cha…
The electronic states near the Fermi level of recently discovered superconductor Ba$_2$CuO$_{4-δ}$ consist primarily of the Cu $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbitals. We investigate the electronic correlation effect and the orbital polarization of an effective two-orbital Hubbard model mimicking the low-energy physics of Ba$_2$CuO$_{4-δ}$ in the hole-rich regime by utilizing the dynamical mean-field theory with the Lanczos method as the impurity solver. We find that the hole-overdoped Ba$_2$CuO$_{4-δ}$ with $3d^8$ (Cu$^{3+}$) is in the orbital-selective Mott phase (OSMP) at half-filling, an…
Identifying the essence of doped Mott insulators is one of the major outstanding problems in condensed matter physics and the key to understanding the high-temperature superconductivity in cuprates. We report real space visualization of Mott transition in Sr1-xLaxCuO2+y cuprate films that cover the entire electron- and hole-doped regimes. Tunneling conductance measurements directly on the cooper-oxide (CuO2) planes reveal a systematic shift in the Fermi level, while the fundamental Mott-Hubbard band structure remains unchanged. This is further demonstrated by exploring atomic-scale electronic …
We investigate the temperature and doping dependence of the optical conductivity $σ(ω)$ of Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ in terms of magnetic/lattice polaron formation. We employ dynamical mean-field theory in the context of the Holstein-t-J model where an exact analytical solution is available in the limit of infinite connectivity. We show that the pseudogap features in the optical conductivity of this compound can be associated to the formation of lattice polarons assisted by the magnetic interaction.
The in-plane and out-of-plane magnetoresistance (MR) of single crystals of La_2CuO_4, lightly doped (x=0.03) with either Sr (La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4) or Li (La_2Cu_{1-x}Li_xO_4), have been measured in the fields applied parallel and perpendicular to the CuO_2 planes. Both La_{1.97}Sr_{0.03}CuO_4 and La_2Cu_{0.97}Li_{0.03}O_4 exhibit the emergence of a positive MR at temperatures (T) well below the spin glass (SG) transition temperature T_{sg}, where charge dynamics is also glassy. This positive MR grows as T->0 and shows hysteresis and memory. In this regime, the in-plane resistance R_{ab}(T,B) is d…
The AC and DC conductivity anisotropies in the low temperature orthorhombic phase of lightly doped La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) are ascribed to the rotational symmetry broken, localized impurity states resulting from the trapping of doped holes by Sr ions. The two lowest-energy p-wave-like states are split by orthorhombicity and partially filled with holes. This leaves a unique imprint in AC conductivity, which shows two distinct infrared continuum absorption energies. Furthermore, the existence of two independent channels for hopping conductivity, associated to the two orthorhombic directions, explains…
We have studied the thermal conductivity $κ$ on single crystalline samples of the antiferromagnetic monolayer cuprates R$_2$CuO$_4$ with R = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, and Gd. For a heat current within the CuO$_2$ planes, i.e. for $κ_{ab}$ we find high-temperature anomalies around 250 K in all samples. In contrast, the thermal conductivity $κ_c$ perpendicular to the CuO$_2$ planes, which we measured for R = La, Pr, and Gd, shows a conventional temperature dependence as expected for a purely phononic thermal conductivity. This qualitative anisotropy of $κ_i$ and the anomalous temperature dependence of…
We calculate the optical conductivity of one-dimensional Mott insulators at low energies using a field theory description. The square root singularity at the optical gap, characteristic of band insulators, is generally absent and appears only at the Luther-Emery point. We also show that only few particle processes contribute significantly to the optical conductivity over a wide range of frequencies and that the bare perturbative regime is recovered only at very large energies. We discuss possible applications of our results to quasi one-dimensional organic conductors.
The anisotropy in the microwave conductivity of the ortho-II YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.50}$ is studied within the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism. The ortho-II YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.50}$ is characterized by a periodic alternative of filled and empty $\hat{b}$-axis CuO chains. By considering the CuO chain induced extended anisotropy impurity scattering, the main features of the anisotropy in the microwave conductivity of the ortho-II YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.50}$ are reproduced based on the nodal approximation of the quasiparticle excitations and scattering processes, including the intensity an…
The transition temperature $T_\textrm{c}$ of unconventional superconductivity is often tunable. For a monolayer of FeSe, for example, the sweet spot is uniquely bound to titanium-oxide substrates. By contrast for La$_{2-\mathrm{x}}$Sr$_\mathrm{x}$CuO$_4$ thin films, such substrates are sub-optimal and the highest $T_\textrm{c}$ is instead obtained using LaSrAlO$_4$. An outstanding challenge is thus to understand the optimal conditions for superconductivity in thin films: which microscopic parameters drive the change in $T_\mathrm{c}$ and how can we tune them? Here we demonstrate, by a combinat…
In this Comment, we show that the experimental data reported by Li {\it et al.} (Phys. Rev. B {\bf 77}, 134501 (2008)) do not support the phonon specular reflection at low temperatures for high-T_c cuprates, because the phonon mean free path \ell calculated from their thermal conductivity data is much smaller than the averaged sample width above \sim 100 mK for both Nd_{2}CuO_{4} and YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.0} single crystals.
The charge dynamics of spin-liquid states described by U(1) gauge theory coupling to fermionic spinons is discussed in this paper. We find that the gapless spinons give rise to a power law optical conductivity inside the charge gap. The theory is applied to explain the unusual optical conductivity observed recently in the organic compound $κ-(BEDT-TTF)_2Cu_2(CN)_3$. We also propose an optical experiment to search for the in-gap excitations in the Kagome spin liquid insulator.
We calculate the optical conductivity of the CuO double chains of PrBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ by the mean-field approximation for the coupled two-chain Hubbard model around quarter filling. We show that the $\sim$40 meV peak structure, spectral shape, and small Drude weight observed in experiment are reproduced well by the present calculation provided that the stripe-type charge ordering presents. We argue that the observed anomalous optical response may be due to the presence of stripe-type fluctuations of charge carriers in the CuO double chains; the fast time scale of the optical measurement should…
We study the optical response of a strongly correlated electron system near the metal-insulator transition using a mapping to the sine-Gordon model. With semiclassical quantization, the spectral weight is distributed between a Drude peak and absorption lines due to breathers. We calculate the Drude weight, the optical gap, and the lineshape of breather absorption.
In-plane and out-of-plane thermal conductivities (κ_{ab} and κ_{c}) are measured on single crystals of pure, 1%-hole-doped, and 1%-Zn-doped La_{2}CuO_{4}. The roles of magnons and the spin stripes in the heat transport in these samples are discussed. Comparison with the heat transport in CuGeO_{3}, which shows similar κ(T) behavior as that of La_{2}CuO_{4}, gives us a lesson of how the heat transport can probe the difference in the spin ground state.
It is found that a strong inhomogeneous distribution of oxygen in single crystal La_{2}CuO_{4+δ} can lead to the formation of isolated superconducting inclusions, the average hole concentration being no more than 0.0024 per Cu atom. The behavior of the conductivity in the magnetic field below T=20 K is consistent with possible existence of a insulating low-temperature magnetic phase (spin density waves), which is typical of cuprates with excess oxygen.
Raman and Infrared (IR) spectra of an underdoped La_{1.90}Sr_{0.10}CuO_{4} single crystal have been measured as a function of temperature. Both techniques provide unconventional low-energy spectra. The IR conductivity exhibits features peaked at finite frequencies which do not have a counterpart in the Raman response. Below approximately 100 K a transfer of both Raman and IR spectral weight towards lower energies is found and a new component in the Raman response builds up being characterized by a very long lifetime of electrons propagating along the Cu-O bonds.
The influence of external magnetic field $h$ on a static conductivity of Mott-Hubbard material which is described by model with correlated hopping of electrons has been investigated. By means of canonical transformation the effective Hamiltonian which takes into account strong intra-site Coulomb repulsion and correlated hopping is obtained. Using a variant of generalized Hartree-Fock approximation the single-electron Green function and quasiparticle energy spectrum of the model have been calculated. The static conductivity $σ$ has been calculated as a function of $h$, electron concentration $n…
We investigate the low-temperature electrical and thermal transport properties in atomically precise metallic heterostructures involving strongly-correlated electron systems. The model of the Mott-insulator/ band-insulator superlattice was discussed in the framework of the slave-boson mean-field approximation and transport quantities were derived by use of the Boltzmann transport equation in the relaxation-time approximation. The results for the optical conductivity are in good agreement with recently published experimental data on (LaTiO$_3)_N$/(SrTiO$_3)_M$ superlattices and allow us to esti…
In their comment \cite{Sun} on our study of phonon heat transport in Nd$_2$CuO$_4$ \cite{Li}, Sun and Ando estimate that the phonon mean free path at low temperature is roughly half the width of the single crystal used in our study, from which they argue that phonon scattering cannot be dominated by sample boundaries. Here we show that their use of specific heat data on Nd$_2$CuO$_4$, which contains a large magnetic contribution at low temperature that is difficult to reliably extract, leads to an underestimate of the mean free path by a factor two compared to an estimate based on the specific…
We report a study of the microwave conductivity of electron-doped Pr$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ superconducting thin films using a cavity perturbation technique. The relative frequency shifts obtained for the samples placed at a maximum electric field location in the cavity are treated using the high conductivity limit presented recently by Peligrad $\textit{et}$ $\textit{al.}$ Using two resonance modes, TE$_{102}$ (16.5 GHz) and TE$_{101}$ (13 GHz) of the same cavity, only one adjustable parameter $Γ$ is needed to link the frequency shifts of an empty cavity to the ones of a cavity loaded…
We report a study of the Ce doping effect on the thermal conductivity (κ) of Nd_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4} (NCCO) at low temperatures down to 0.3 K and in magnetic fields up to 14 T. It is found that with Ce doping, the electronic thermal conductivity increases; at the same time, the a-axis field induced changes in κ(H), associated with the spin flop and spin polarization of Nd^{3+} sublattice, and the spin flop of Cu^{2+} sublattice, gradually disappear. These are clearly due to the electron doping and the destruction of the antiferromagnetic orders. In the superconducting NCCO with x = 0.14 and 0.18…
The optical conductivity (OC) of cuprates is studied theoretically in the low density limit of the t-t'-J-Holstein model. By developing a limited phonon basis exact diagonalization (LPBED) method capable of treating the lattice of largest size 4x4 ever considered, we are able to discern fine features of the mid-infrared (MIR) part of the OC revealing three-peak structure. The two lowest peaks are observed in experiments and the highest one is tacitly resolved in moderately doped cuprates. Comparison of OC with the results of semianalytic approaches and detailed analysis of the calculated isoto…
The infrared transmission measurement was performed for a two-dimensional spin-orbit coupling induced Mott insulator Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$ with a layered-perovskite structure. A phonon-assisted magnon mode was observed at around 1870 cm$^{-1}$ in the absorption spectrum below 180 K. The nearest-neighbor superexchange interaction $J$ was estimated to be 57 meV, which is about a half of the $J$ value of a copper oxide La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$. Our results indicate the possibility that nontrivial properties such as superconductivity are realized at rather high temperature in iridium oxides.
Temperature dependences of the optical spectra of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ with $x$=0.12 and 0.15 were carefully examined for a polarization parallel to the CuO$_2$-plane over a wide frequency range down to 8 cm$^{-1}$. Selection of well-characterized crystals enabled us to measure purely in-plane polarized spectra without any additional peak. The weight of superconducting (SC) condensate estimated from the missing area in $σ_1(ω$) well agrees with the estimate from the slope of $σ_2(ω$) vs 1/$ω$ plot, showing no evidence that the Ferrell-Glover-Tinkham sum-rule is violated in the optical spect…
The parent compounds of the high-temperature cuprate superconductors are Mott insulators. It has been generally agreed that understanding the physics of the doped Mott insulators is essential to understanding the mechanism of high temperature superconductivity. A natural starting point is to elucidate the basic electronic structure of the parent compound. Here we report comprehensive high resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on Ca$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$, a Mott insulator and a prototypical parent compound of the cuprates. Multiple underlying Fermi surface sheets are revealed for the …
Superconducting Pr$_2$CuO$_x$, $x\simeq 4$ films with $T^\prime$ structure and a $T_c$ of 27 K have been investigated by millimeter-wave transmission and broadband (infrared-to-ultraviolet) reflectivity measurements in the normal and superconducting state. The results obtained by both experimental methods show a consistent picture of the superconducting condensate formation below $T_c$. An Eliashberg analysis of the data proves $d$-wave superconductivity and unitary-limit impurity scattering of the charge carriers below $T_{c}$. The derived electron-exchange boson interaction spectral function…
Electrostatic doping into an $n$-type Mott insulator Sm$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$ has been successfully achieved with use of the heterojunction with an $n$-type band semiconductor Nb-doped SrTiO$_{3}$. The junction exhibits rectifying current-voltage characteristics due to the interface band discontinuity and the formation of depleted region. The application of reverse bias electric field on this junction enables the field-effect electron doping (presumably up to 6% per Cu atom) to the Mott insulator. The electro-modulation absorption spectroscopy could clearly show a large modification of the Mott-gap s…
We report conductivity measurements of Cr-doped V2O3 using a variable pressure technique. The critical behavior of the conductivity near the Mott-insulator to metal critical endpoint is investigated in detail as a function of pressure and temperature. The critical exponents are determined, as well as the scaling function associated with the equation of state. The universal properties of a liquid-gas transition are found. This is potentially a generic description of the Mott critical endpoint in correlated electron materials.
While the traditional local-density approximation (LDA) cannot describe Mott insulators, {\it ab-initio} determination of the Hubbard $U$, for example, limits LDA-plus dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) approaches. Here, we attempt to overcome these bottlenecks by achieving fusion of the quantum chemistry (QC) approach with DMFT. QC+DMFT supplants the LDA bandstructure by its QC counterpart as an input to DMFT. Using QC+DMFT, we show that undoped $La_{2}CuO_{4}$ is a $d$-Mott insulator, and qualitatively discuss the circulating current- and incoherent metal phase, at small but finite hole dopi…
We have measured the thermal conductivity in the $ab$-plane of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ ($x =$ 0.10, 0.115, 0.13) in magnetic fields up to 14 T parallel to the c-axis and also parallel to the $ab$-plane. By the application of magnetic fields parallel to the c-axis, the thermal conductivity has been found to be suppressed at low temperatures below the temperature $T_κ$ which is located above the superconducting transition temperature and is almost independent of the magnitude of the magnetic field. The suppression is marked in $x =$ 0.10 and 0.13, while it is small in $x =$ 0.115. Furthermore, n…
The real part of optical conductivity $\text{Re}σ(ω)$ of the Mott insulators has a large amount of information on how spin and charge degrees of freedom interact with each other. By using the time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group, we study $\text{Re}σ(ω)$ of the two-dimensional Hubbard model on a square lattice at half filling. We find an excitonic peak at the Mott-gap edge of $\text{Re}σ(ω)$ not only for the two-dimensional square lattice but also for two- and four-leg ladders. For the square lattice, however, we do not clearly find a gap between an excitonic peak and continuum …
Pressure dependence of the conductivity and thermoelectric power is measured through the Mott transition in the layer organic conductor EtMe3P[Pd(dmit)2]2. The critical behavior of the thermoelectric effect provides a clear and objective determination of the Mott-Hubbard transition during the isothermal pressure sweep. Above the critical end point, the metal-insulator crossing, determined by the thermoelectric effect minimum value, is not found to coincide with the maximum of the derivative of the conductivity as a function of pressure. We show that the critical exponents of the Mott-Hubbard t…
We develop a method for extracting the steady nonequilibrium current from studies of driven isolated systems, applying it to the model of one-dimensional Mott insulator at high temperatures. While in the nonintegrable model the nonequilibrium conditions can be accounted by internal heating, the integrability leads to a strongly nonlinear dc response with vanishingly small dc conductivity in the linear--response regime. The finding is consistent with equilibrium results for dc limit of the optical conductivity determined in the presence of a weak and decreasing perturbation.
We calculate the optical and DC conductivity for half-filled disordered Hubbard model near the Mott metal-insulator transition. As in the clean case, large metallic resistivity is driven by a strong inelastic scattering, and Drude-like peak in the optical conductivity persists even at temperatures when the resistivity is well beyond the semiclassical Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit. Local random potential does not introduce new charge carriers, but it induces effective local carrier doping and broadens the bandwidth. This makes the system more metallic, in agreement with the recent experiments on X-ray…
High temperature copper-oxide-based superconductivity is obtained by adding carriers to insulating "parent compounds". It is widely believed the parent compounds are "Mott" insulators, in which the lack of conduction arises from anomalously strong electron-electron repulsion, and that the unusual properties of Mott insulators are responsible for high temperature superconductivity. This paper presents a comparison of optical conductivity measurements and theoretical calculations which challenges this belief. The analysis indicates that the correlation strength in the cuprates is not as strong a…

We investigated excitation spectra of the one-dimensional chain compound Sr$_{2}$CuO$_{3}$. The small peak at 2.3 eV in the loss function was turned to correspond to the strong charge transfer transition at 1.8 eV in conductivity. It has the excitonic character expected in one dimensional extended Hubbard model of the transition from the lower Hubberd band to the Zhang-Rice singlet state. The strongest peak at 2.7 eV in the loss function is attributed to the continuum excitation of the excitonic charge transfer transition. The spectral weight sum rule is satisfied within these transitions.

We present the carrier transport properties in the vicinity of a doping-driven Mott transition observed at a field-effect transistor (FET) channel using a single crystal of the typical two-dimensional organic Mott insulator $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$CuN(CN)$_2$Cl ($κ$-Cl).The FET shows a continuous metal$-$insulator transition (MIT) as electrostatic doping proceeds. The phase transition appears to involve two-step crossovers, one in Hall measurement and the other in conductivity measurement. The crossover in conductivity occurs around the conductance quantum $e^2/h$ , and hence is not associated with …
A key unexplained feature of cuprate superconductors is the upturn in their normal state electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$ seen at low temperature inside the pseudogap phase. We examined this issue via measurements of the thermal conductivity $κ(T)$ down to 50 mK and in fields up to 17 T on the cuprate La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ at dopings $p = 0.13$, 0.136, 0.143 and 0.18. At $p$ = 0.136, 0.143, and 0.18, we observe an initial increase of the electronic thermal conductivity $κ_0/T$ as a function of field, as expected in a $d$-wave superconductor. For $p$ = 0.136 and 0.143, further increasing the fie…
We present results of the thermal conductivity of $\rm La_2CuO_4$ and $\rm La_{1.8}Eu_{0.2}CuO_4$ single-crystals which represent model systems for the two-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice. We find large anisotropies of the thermal conductivity, which are explained in terms of two-dimensional heat conduction by magnons within the CuO$_2$ planes. Non-magnetic Zn substituted for Cu gradually suppresses this magnon thermal conductivity $κ_{\mathrm{mag}}$. A semiclassical analysis of $κ_{\mathrm{mag}}$ is shown to yield a magnon mean free path which scales linear…
We show that a metastable $η$--pairing superconducting phase can be induced by photodoping doublons and holes into a strongly repulsive fermionic Hubbard model. The doublon-hole condensate originates from an intrinsic doublon-hole exchange interaction and does not rely on the symmetry of the half-filled Hubbard model. It extends over a wide range of doublon densities and effective temperatures. Different non-equilibrium protocols to realize this state are proposed and numerically tested. We also study the optical conductivity in the superconducting phase, which exhibits ideal metallic behavior…
We have investigated the dispersion renormalization $Z_{disp}$ in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) over the wide doping range of $x=0.03-0.30$, for binding energies extending to several hundred meV's. Strong correlation effects conspire in such a way that the system exhibits an LDA-like dispersion which essentially `undresses' ($Z_{disp}\to 1$) as the Mott insulator is approached. Our finding that the Mott insulator contains `nascent' or `preformed' metallic states with a vanishing spectral weight offers a challenge to existing theoretical scenarios for cuprates.
The doping and temperature dependent conductivity of electron-doped cuprates is analysed. The variation of kinetic energy with doping is shown to imply that the materials are approximately as strongly correlated as the hole-doped materials. The optical spectrum is fit to a quasiparticle scattering model; while the model fits the optical data well, gross inconsistencies with photoemission data are found, implying the presence of a large, strongly doping dependent Landau parameter.
The thermal conductivity of the antiferromagnet Nd$_2$CuO$_4$ was measured down to 50 mK. Using the spin-flop transition to switch on and off the acoustic Nd magnons, we can reliably separate the magnon and phonon contributions to heat transport. We find that magnons travel ballistically below 0.5 K, with a thermal conductivity growing as $T^3$, from which we extract their velocity. We show that the rate of scattering of acoustic magnons by phonons grows as $T^3$, and the scattering of phonons by magnons peaks at twice the average Nd magnon frequency.
We study the competition between a random potential and a commensurate potential on interacting fermionic and bosonic systems using a variety of methods. We focus on one dimensional interacting fermionic systems but higher dimensional bosonic and fermionic extensions, as well as classical equivalents are also discussed. Our methods which include bosonization, replica variational method, functional renormalization group (RG) and perturbation around the atomic limit, go beyond conventional perturbative expansions around the Luttinger liquid in one dimension. All these methods agree on the predic…
The phase diagram of hole-doped copper oxides shows four different electronic phases existing at zero temperature. Familiar among these are the Mott insulator, high-transition-temperature superconductor and metallic phases. A fourth phase, ofunknown identity, occurs at light doping along the zero-temperature bound of the `pseudogap' regime. This regime is rich in peculiar electronic phenomena, prompting numerous proposals that it contains some form of hidden electronic order. Here we present low-temperature electronic structure imaging studies of a lightly hole-doped copper oxide: Ca_{2-x}Na_{…
We discuss a semiclassical calculation of low energy charge transport in one-dimensional (1d) insulators with a focus on Mott insulators, whose charge degrees of freedom are gapped due to the combination of short range interactions and a periodic lattice potential. Combining RG and instanton methods, we calculate the nonlinear ac conductivity and interpret the result in terms of multi-photon absorption. We compare the result of the semiclassical calculation for interacting systems to a perturbative, fully quantum mechanical calculation of multi-photon absorption in a 1d band insulator and find…
Using a combination of time-domain THz spectroscopy (TDTS) and mutual inductance measurements, we have investigated the low-energy electrodynamic response of overdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ films that have been exposed to ion irradiation. Films went through three rounds of irradiation (2, 4, and 6 $\times 10^{13}$ ions/cm$^2$) and mutual inductance and TDTS experiments were performed between each step. Together with the as-grown film, this gives four different levels of disorder. The transport scattering rate that is measured directly in the THz experiments is an approximately linear functio…
The transient optical conductivity of photoexcited 1T-TaS2 is determined over a three-order-of-magnitude frequency range. Prompt collapse and recovery of the Mott gap is observed. However, we find important differences between this transient metallic state and that seen across the thermally-driven insulator-metal transition. Suppressed low-frequency conductivity, Fano phonon lineshapes, and a mid-infrared absorption band point to polaronic transport. This is explained by noting that the photo-induced metallic state of 1T-TaS2 is one in which the Mott gap is melted but the lattice retains its l…
We study electric transport near the Mott metal-insulator transition in a triangular-lattice Hubbard model at half filling. We calculate optical conductivity $σ(ω)$ based on a cellular dynamical mean field theory including vertex corrections inside the cluster. Near the Mott critical end point, a Drude analysis in the metallic region suggests that the change in the Drude weight is important rather than that in the transport scattering rate for the Mott transition. In the insulating region, there emerges an "ingap" peak in $σ(ω)$ at low $ω$ near the Mott transition, and this smoothly connects t…
We elucidate the mechanism by which a Mott insulator transforms into a non-Fermi liquid metal upon increasing disorder at half filling. By correlating maps of the local density of states, the local magnetization and the local bond conductivity, we find a collapse of the Mott gap toward a V-shape pseudogapped density of states that occurs concomitantly with the decrease of magnetism around the highly disordered sites but an increase of bond conductivity. These metallic regions percolate to form an emergent non-Fermi liquid phase with a conductivity that increases with temperature. Bond conducti…
We performed optical-pump terahertz-probe measurements of a Mott insulator YTiO$_{3}$ and a band semiconductor Si using a laser diode (1.47 eV) and a femtosecond pulse laser (1.55 eV). Both samples possess long energy-relaxation times (1.5 ms for YTiO$_{3}$ and 15 $μ$s for Si); therefore, it is possible to extract terahertz complex conductivities of photoinduced carriers under equilibrium. We observed highly contrasting behavior - Drude conductivity in Si and localized conductivity possibly obeying the Jonscher law in YTiO$_{3}$. The carrier number at the highest carrier-concentration layer in…
