It is found that a strong inhomogeneous distribution of oxygen in single crystal La_{2}CuO_{4+δ} can lead to the formation of isolated superconducting inclusions, the average hole concentration being no more than 0.0024 per Cu atom. The behavior of the conductivity in the magnetic field below T=20 K is consistent with possible existence of a insulating low-temperature magnetic phase (spin density waves), which is typical of cuprates with excess oxygen.
The atomic pair distribution functions (PDF) of four powder samples of YBa2Cu3O6+x (x=0.25, 0.45, 0.65, 0.94) at 15 K have been measured by means of pulsed neutron diffraction. The PDF is modelled using a full-profile fitting approach to yield structural parameters. In contrast to earlier XAFS work we find no evidence of a split apical oxygen site. However, a slightly improved fit over the average crystallographic model results when the planar Cu(2) site is split along the z-direction. This is interpreted in terms of charge inhomogeneities in the CuO2 planes.
The resistive measurements were made to study the magnetic field-induced antiferromagnetic (AF) - weak ferromagnetic (WF) transition in La$_2$CuO$_4$ single-crystal. The magnetic field (DC or pulsed) was applied normally to the CuO$_2$ layers. The transition manifested itself in a drastic decrease of the resistance in critical fields of ~5-7 T. The study is the first to display the effect of the AF -WF transition on the conductivity of the La$_2$CuO$_4$ single-crystal in the parallel - to - CuO$_2$ layers direction. The results provide support for the 3-dimensional nature of the hopping conduc…
In contrast to the "Pr-issue" that neither PrBa2Cu3O7 (Pr123) nor PrBa2Cu4O8 (Pr124) shows superconductivity (SC), we have observed 100%-fraction of SC in an oxygen-reduced Pr2Ba4Cu7O(15-delta) (Pr247) which has a hybrid structure that Pr247 = Pr123 + Pr124. It is found that Cu nuclear-spin signals from the CuO2 planes observed at 300K are completely wiped out down at 2K. Instead, plane signals at 2K are observed at higher frequencies. This indicates that, despite the bulk SC, the CuO2 planes in Pr247 are found to be in an insulating and antiferromagnetically ordered state.
We present local structural evidence supporting the presence of charge inhomogeneities in the CuO2 planes of underdoped La2-xSrxCuO4. High-resolution atomic pair distribution functions have been obtained from neutron powder diffraction data over the range of doping 0 < x < 0.30 at 10 K. Despite the average structure getting less orthorhombic we see a broadening of the in-plane Cu-O bond distribution as a function of doping up to optimal doping. Thereafter the peak abruptly sharpens. Complementary evidence is also evident from the observation of octahedral tilt disorder in the PDF at higher ato…
We have obtained mid-infrared optical absorption spectra of the S=1/2 quasi one-dimensional CuO using polarized transmission measurement and interpreted the spectra in terms of phonon assisted magnetic excitations. When the electric field is parallel to the main antiferromagnetic direction a Delta shaped peak is observed with the maximum at 0.23eV which is attributed to spinons along Cu-O chains. At low temperatures in the antiferromagnetic phase another peak appears at 0.16eV which is attributed to two-magnon absorption but the spinon peak remains. This behavior is interpreted as due to a dim…
Antiferromagnetic correlations have been argued to be the cause of the d-wave superconductivity and the pseudogap phenomena exhibited by the cuprates. Although the antiferromagnetic response in the pseudogap state has been reported for a number of compounds, there exists no information for structurally simple HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$. Here we report neutron scattering results for HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (superconducting transition temperature T$_c$ $\sim$ 71 K, pseudogap temperature T* $\sim$ 305 K) that demonstrate the absence of the two most prominent features of the magnetic excitation spectrum of t…
Generally strong charge and magnetic inhomogeneities are observed in NQR/NMR experiments on underdoped cuprates. It is not the case for the underdoped HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$, the most symmetric and highest T$_c$ single layer cuprate, whose magnetic inhomogeneity is strongly suppressed. Also neutron scattering experiments reveal a unique pair of weakly dispersive magnetic modes in this material. We propose that these special properties stem from the symmetric positioning of the O-dopants between adjacent CuO$_2$ layers that lead to a strong superexchange interaction between a pair of hole spins. I…
We make use of the strong spin-charge coupling in the electron-doped cuprate $\mathrm{Nd}_{2-x}\mathrm{Ce}_x\mathrm{CuO}_4$ to probe changes in its spin system via magnetotransport measurements. We present a detailed study of the out-of-plane magnetoresistance in underdoped single crystals of this compound, including the nonsuperconducting, $0.05\,\leq x\,\leq 0.115$, and superconducting, $0.12\,\leq x\,\leq 0.13$, compositions. Special focus is put on the dependence of the magnetoresistance on the field orientation in the plane of the CuO$_2$ layers. In addition to the kink at the field-induc…
We compute the absorption spectrum for multimagnon excitations assisted by phonons in insulating layered cuprates using exact diagonalization in clusters of up to 32 sites. The resulting line shape is very sensitive to the underlying magnetic Hamiltonian describing the spin dynamics. For the usual Heisenberg description of undoped Cu-O planes we find, in accordance with experiment, a two-magnon peak followed by high energy side bands. However the relative weight of the side bands is too small to reproduce the experiment. An extended Heisenberg model including a sizable four-site cyclic exchang…
Strong correlation between field-induced antiferromagnetic (AF) order and superconductivity is demonstrated for an electron-doped cuprate superconductor, Pr$_{1-x}$LaCe$_{x}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ (PLCCO). In addition to the specimen with $x=0.11$ (which is close to the AF phase boundary, $x\simeq0.10$), we show that the one with $x=0.15$ ($T_c\simeq16$ K at zero field) also exhibits the field-induced AF order with a reduced magnitude of the induced moment. The uniform muon Knight shift at a low magnetic field ($\sim10^2$ Oe) indicates that the AF order is not localized within the cores of flux lines, wh…
Magnetic excitations in the energy range up to 100 meV are studied for over-doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ with $x=0.25$ and 0.30, using time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy. Comparison of spectra integrated over the width of an antiferromagnetic Brillouin zone demonstrates that the magnetic scattering at intermediate energies, $20 \lesssim ω\lesssim 100$ meV, progressively decreases with over-doping. This strongly suggests that the magnetism is not related to Fermi surface nesting, but rather is associated with a decreasing volume fraction of (probably fluctuating) antiferromagnetic bubbles…
We study the destruction of the antiferromagnetic order in the high-Tc superconductors La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) and YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6+x) in the framework of the CP1-nonlinear sigma model formulation of the 2D quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The dopants are introduced as independent fermions with appropriate dispersion relations determined by the shape of the Fermi surface. The energy of skyrmion topological defects, which are shown to be introduced by doping, is used as an order parameter for antiferromagnetic order. We obtain analytic expressions for this as a function of doping which allow us to …
Detailed behavior of the magnetoresistance (MR) is studied in lightly doped antiferromagnetic La_{1.99}Sr_{0.01}CuO_{4}, where, thanks to the weak ferromagnetic moment due to spin canting, the antiferromagnetic (AF) domain structure can be manipulated by the magnetic field. The MR behavior demonstrates that CuO_2 planes indeed contain anti-phase AF domain boundaries in which charges are confined, forming anti-phase stripes. The data suggest that a high magnetic field turns the anti-phase stripes into in-phase stripes, and the latter appear to give better conduction than the former, which chall…
We investigated the in-plane angular magnetoresistivity (AMR) of $% T^{^{\prime}}$-phase La$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (LCCO) thin films ($% x=0.06-0.15$) fabricated by a pulsed laser deposition technique. The in-plane AMR with $\mathbf{H}\parallel ab$ shows a twofold symmetry instead of the fourfold behavior found in other electron-doped cuprates such as Pr$% _{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ and Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$. The twofold AMR disappears above a certain temperature, $T_{D}$. The $T_{D}(x)$ is well above $T_{c}(x)$ for $x=0.06$ ($\sim 110$ K), and decreases with increasing doping, until it …
We show how an accurate first-principles treatment of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state of La$_2$CuO$_4$ can be obtained without invoking any free parameters such as the Hubbard $U$. The magnitude and orientation of our theoretically predicted magnetic moment of $0.495 μ_{B}$ on Cu-sites along the (100) direction are in excellent accord with experimental results. The computed values of the band gap (1.00 eV) and the exchange-coupling (-138 meV) match the corresponding experimental values. We identify interesting band splittings below the Fermi energy, including an appreciable Hund's spl…
We used femtosecond optical pump-probe spectroscopy to study the photoinduced change in reflectivity of thin films of the electron-doped cuprate La$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ (LCCO) with dopings of x$=$0.08 (underdoped) and x$=$0.11 (optimally doped). Above T$_c$, we observe fluence-dependent relaxation rates which onset at a similar temperature that transport measurements first see signatures of antiferromagnetic correlations. Upon suppressing superconductivity with a magnetic field, it is found that the fluence and temperature dependence of relaxation rates is consistent with bimolecular recombina…
We propose a mechanism for high critical temperature (T_c) in the coexistent phase of superconducting- (SC) and antiferromagnetic (AF) CuO_2 planes in multilayered cuprates. The Josephson coupling between the SC planes separated by an AF insulator (Mott insulator) is calculated perturbatively up to the fourth order in terms of the hopping integral between adjacent CuO_2 planes. It is shown that the AF exchange splitting in the AF plane suppresses the so-called pi-Josephson coupling, and the long-ranged 0-Josephson coupling leads to coexistence with a rather high value of T_c.
High-transition-temperature (high-Tc) superconductivity develops near antiferromagnetic phases, and it is possible that magnetic excitations contribute to the superconducting pairing mechanism. To assess the role of antiferromagnetism, it is essential to understand the doping and temperature dependence of the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin correlations. The phase diagram is asymmetric with respect to electron and hole doping, and for the comparatively less-studied electron-doped materials, the antiferromagnetic phase extends much further with doping [1, 2] and appears to overlap with t…
The origin of differences in the magnetic responses of Pr$_{1-x}$LaCe$_x$CuO$_4$ with $x=0.11-0.12$ and moderately doped $p$-type cuprates is investigated using the t-J model, the Mori projection operator technique and dispersions of charge carriers derived from photoemission experiments. These differences are related to the proximity of the former crystal to the boundary of the antiferromagnetic phase and to the remoteness of $p$-type compounds from it. This leads to different nesting vectors of the low-frequency equi-energy contours of carrier dispersions in these crystals. The strong nestin…
For electron-doped cuprates, the strong suppression of antiferromagnetic spin correlation by efficient reduction annealing by the "protect-annealing" method leads to superconductivity not only with lower Ce concentrations but also with higher transition temperatures. To reveal the nature of this superconducting state, we have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of protect-annealed electron-doped superconductors Pr$_{1.3-x}$La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ and directly investigated the superconducting gap. The gap was found to be consistent with $d$-wave symmetry, sugges…
We have succeeded in growing large-size single-crystals of Ca$_{2+x}$Y$_{2-x}$Cu$_5$O$_{10}$ with $0 \le x \le 1.67$ and measured the magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and magnetization curve, in order to study the magnetic ground state in the edge-sharing CuO$_2$ chain as a function of hole concentration and magnetic field. In $0 \le x \le 1.3$, it has been found that an antiferromagnetically ordered phase with the magnetic easy axis along the b-axis is stabilized and that a spin-flop transition occurs by the application of magnetic fields parallel to the b-axis. The antiferromagnetic tr…
Inelastic neutron scattering for Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4+δ}$ near optimal doping ($x \approx 0.155$, $T_{c} = 25 \mathrm{K}$) reveals that the dynamic magnetic susceptibility at the antiferromagnetic zone center exhibits two characteristic energies in the superconducting state: $ω_1 \approx 6.4 \mathrm{meV}$ and $ω_2 \approx 4.5 \mathrm{meV}$. These two magnetic energies agree $quantitatively$ with the $B_{1g}$ / $B_{2g}$ and $A_{1g}$ features previously observed in electronic Raman scattering, where the former is believed to indicate the maximum electronic gap and the origin of the smaller $A…
We systematically investigate charge-ordering phases by means of a restricted and unrestricted Gutzwiller approximation to the single-band Hubbard model with nearest ($t$) and next-nearest neighbor hopping ($t'$). When $|t'/t|$ is small, as appropriate for ${\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4}$, stripes are found, whereas in compounds with larger $|t'/t|$ (such as ${\rm Ca_{2-x}Na_x CuO_2Cl_2}$ and ${\rm Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}}$) checkerboard structures are favored. In contrast to the linear doping dependence found for stripes the charge periodicity of checkerboard textures is locked to 4 unit cells over a …
Although La(2)Cu(1-x)Li(x)O(4) [Li-LCO] differs from La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) [Sr-LCO] in many ways (e.g., the absence of metallic transport, high-Tc superconductivity, and incommensurate antiferromagnetic correlations), it has been known that certain magnetic properties are remarkably similar. The present work establishes the detailed bulk magnetic phase diagram of Li-LCO (0 <= x <= 0.07), which is found to be nearly identical to that of lightly-doped Sr-LCO, and therefore extends the universality of the phase diagram to hole-doped but nonsuperconducting cuprates.
We have revisited the magnetic penetration depth data on the electron-doped cuprates Pr(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4-y) and La(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4-y). It is proposed that the transition between the nodal-gap-like and nodeless-gap-like behaviors upon electron-doping [see, e.g., M. Kim et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 87001 (2003)] can be due to a scattering of the quasiparticles in the d-wave superconducting state by an incipient or weak antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave. This conjecture is supported by the inelastic neutron scattering and angle-resolved photoemission experiments on some closely related electron-do…
An increase of the acoustic absorption is found in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} (x = 0.019, 0.03 and 0.06) close to the temperatures at which freezing of the spin fluctuations in antiferromagnetic-correlated clusters is expected to occur. The acoustic absorption is attributed to changes of the sizes of the quasi-frozen clusters induced by the vibration stress through magnetoelastic coupling.
Inelastic neutron-scattering experiments on the high-temperature superconductor La$_{1.855}$Sr$_{0.145}$CuO$_{4}$ reveal a magnetic excitation gap $Δ$ that decreases continuously upon application of a magnetic field perpendicular to the CuO$_2$ planes. The gap vanishes at the critical field required to induce long-range incommensurate antiferromagnetic order, providing compelling evidence for a field-induced soft-mode driven quantum phase transition.
We describe two different nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) based techniques, designed to measure the local asymmetry of the internal electric field gradient, and the tilt angle of the main NQR principal axis z from the crystallographic axis c. These techniques use the dependence of the NQR signal on the duration of the radio frequency (rf) pulse and on the direction of the rf field H1 with respect to the crystal axis. The techniques are applied to oriented powder of YBa$_{2}$Cu$%_{3}$O$_{y}$ fully enriched with 63Cu. Measurements were performed at different frequencies, corresponding to diff…
An intact CuO$_2$ plane is widely believed to be a prerequisite for the high-$T_c$ superconductivity in cuprate superconductors. However, an exception may exist in the superconducting Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+δ}$ materials where CuO chains play a more important role. From first-principles density functional theory calculations, we have studied the electronic and magnetic structures of Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+δ}$. The stoichiometric Ba$_2$CuO$_3$ and Ba$_2$CuO$_4$ contain quasi-one-dimensional CuO chains and intact two-dimensional CuO$_2$ planes, respectively. In comparison with the nonmagnetic metal Ba$_2$CuO$_4$,…
We present local structural evidence for the existence of charge inhomogeneities at low temperature in underdoped and optimally doped La_2-xSr_xCuO_4. The inhomogeneities disappear for x > 0.2. The evidence for the charge inhomogeneities comes from an anomalous increase in the in-plane Cu-O bond length distribution in the underdoped samples as well as evidence for CuO_6 octahedral tilt inhomogeneities in the intermediate range structure. Preliminary analysis of the temperature dependence of this phenomenon indicates that the inhomogeneities set in at temperatures in the range 60 K < Tco < 130 …
We report electronic Raman scattering experiments on a superconducting ${\rm La_{1.88}Sr_{0.12}CuO_{4}}$ single crystal in a magnetic field. At low temperatures, the spectral weight of the high-energy two-magnon peak increases linearly with field and is amplified by a factor of more than two at 14 T. The effect disappears at elevated temperatures and is not present in undoped ${\rm La_{2}CuO_{4}}$. This observation is discussed in terms of an electronically inhomogeneous state in which the field enhances the volume fraction of a phase with local antiferromagnetic order at the expense of the su…
By numerically solving models with competing superconducting and antiferromagnetic orders, we study the magnetic field dependence of the antiferromagnetic moment in both the weak and strong field regimes. Through a omparison with the neutron scattering results of Kang et al and Matsuura et al.on $Nd_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_4$, we conclude that this system is close to a SO(5) symmetric critical point. We also make a quantitative prediction on increasing the upper critical field $B_{c2}$ and the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ by applying an in-plane magnetic field.
The evidence for a quantum phase transition under the superconducting dome in the high-$T_c$ cuprates has been controversial. We report low temperature normal state thermopower(S) measurements in electron-doped Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ as a function of doping (x from 0.11 to 0.19). We find that at 2K both S and S/T increase dramatically from x=0.11 to 0.16 and then saturate in the overdoped region. This behavior has a remarkable similarity to previous Hall effect results in Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ . Our results are further evidence for an antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic quantum ph…
We theoretically investigate inhomogeneity effects on the charges, electric field gradients and site-projected densities of states in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$. We find pronounced differences in the doping-induced number of holes at different atomic sites. The contributions of these sites to the density of states in the vicinity of the Fermi level are peaked at the same energy, but vary in magnitude by up to 70 percent and have different energy dependence. Due to this energy dependence the role of the intrinsic inhomogeneities for superconductivity strongly depends on the energy and character of the…
We report a neutron and Raman scattering study of a single-crystal of La(2)CuO(4.05) prepared by high temperature electrochemical oxidation. Elastic neutron scattering measurements show the presence of two phases, corresponding to the two edges of the first miscibility gap, all the way up to 300 K. An additional oxygen redistribution, driven by electronic energies, is identified at 250 K in Raman scattering (RS) experiments by the simultaneous onset of two-phonon and two-magnon scattering, which are fingerprints of the insulating phase. Elastic neutron scattering measurements show directly an …
The magnetic susceptibility of the optimally doped Pr$_{1-x}$LaCe$_x$CuO$_4$ in the superconducting state is calculated using the t-J model of Cu-O planes, Mori's projection operator technique and the dispersion of electron bands derived from photoemission experiments. The electron band folding across the antiferromagnetic Brillouin zone border, which is inherent in the crystal, leads to a commensurate low-frequency response. The same band folding causes the appearance of a supplementary spin-excitation branch. The coexistence of the two spin-excitation branches explains two maxima observed in…
The role of antiferromagnetic spin correlations in high-temperature superconductors remains a matter of debate. We present inelastic neutron scattering evidence that gapless spin fluctuations coexist with superconductivity in La$_{1.905}$Ba$_{0.095}$CuO$_4$. Furthermore, we observe that both the low-energy magnetic spectral weight and the spin incommensurability are enhanced by the onset of superconducting correlations. We propose that the coexistence occurs through intertwining of spatial modulations of the pair wave function and the antiferromagnetic correlations. This proposal is also direc…
We report a detailed inelastic neutron scattering study of the collective magnetic excitations of overdoped superconducting La1.78Sr0.22CuO4 for the energy range 0-160 meV. Our measurements show that overdoping suppresses the strong response present for optimally doped La2-xSrxCuO4 which is peaked near 50 meV. The remaining response is peaked at incommensurate wavevectors for all energies investigated. We observe a strong high-frequency magnetic response for E >= 80 meV suggesting that significant antiferromagnetic exchange couplings persist well into the overdoped part of the cuprate phase di…
We have studied anisotropic magnetoresistance (MR) and magnetization with rotating magnetic field (B) within $CuO_2$ plane in lightly doped AF $Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_{4}$. \emph{A giant anisotropy} in MR is observed at low temperature below 5 K. The c-axis resistivity can be tuned about one order of magnitude just by changing B direction within $CuO_2$ plane and a scaling behavior between out-of-plane and in-plane MR is found. A "Spin valve" effect is proposed to understand the giant anisotropy of out-of-plane MR and the evolution of scaling parameters with the external field. It is found that the f…
We present results of magnetic neutron diffraction experiments on the co-doped super-oxygenated La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4+y) (LSCO+O) system with x=0.09. The spin-density wave has been studied and we find long-range incommensurate antiferromagnetic order below T_N coinciding with the superconducting ordering temperature T_c=40 K. The incommensurability value is consistent with a hole-doping of n_h~1/8, but in contrast to non-superoxygenated La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) with hole-doping close to n_h ~ 1/8 the magnetic order parameter is not field-dependent. We attribute this to the magnetic order being fully dev…
We report on the magnetic phase diagram of a hole-doped cuprate Ca$_{2-x}$Na$_{x}$CuO$_{2}$Cl$_{2}$, which is free from buckling of CuO$_2$ planes, determined by muon spin rotation and relaxation. It is characterized by a quasi-static spin glass-like phase over a range of sodium concentration ($0.05\leq x\leq 0.12$), which is held between long range antiferromagnetic (AF) phase ($x\leq 0.02$) and superconducting phase where the system is non-magnetic for $x\geq 0.15$. The obtained phase diagram qualitatively agrees well with that commonly found for hole-doped high-\tc cuprates, strongly sugges…
In a recent Letter (Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 036401 (2011)), Lau, et al. investigated the single hole problem in an effective model containing Cu $d$ and O $2p$ orbitals by exact diagonalization on clusters composed of 32 CuO$_2$ unit cells. With full quantum fluctuations due to the antiferromagnetic (AFM) backgroud, they found that spin-polaron solutions with spin 3/2 become lowest energy solutions in certain region of Brillouin zone (BZ), which they claimed no similiar solutions were obtained in other models or approximations before. In this Comment, we would like to point out that such high-sp…
We carry out a detailed numerical study of the three-band Hubbard model in the underdoped region both in the hole- as well as in the electron-doped case by means of the variational cluster approach. Both the phase diagram and the low-energy single-particle spectrum are very similar to recent results for the single-band Hubbard model with next-nearest-neighbor hoppings. In particular, we obtain a mixed antiferromagnetic+superconducting phase at low doping with a first-order transition to a pure superconducting phase accompanied by phase separation. In the single-particle spectrum a clear Zhang-…
High-$T_{\rm{c}}$ cuprate superconductors host spin, charge and lattice instabilities. In particular, in the antiferromagnetic glass phase, over a large doping range, lanthanum based cuprates display a glass-like spin freezing with antiferromagnetic correlations. Previously, sound velocity anomalies in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) for hole doping $p\geq 0.145$ were reported and interpreted as arising from a coupling of the lattice to the magnetic glass [Frachet, Vinograd et al., Nat. Phys. 16, 1064-1068 (2020)]. Here we report both sound velocity and attenuation in LSCO $p=0.12$, i.e. at a…
The temperature dependences of resistance, R(T), of two single-crystals La_{2}CuO_{4+δ} samples have been studied with the aim to detect a possible change in the R(T) behavior induced by paramagnetic-antiferromagnetic (PM-AFM) transition. One of the samples with δ\lesssim 0.01, was fairly homogeneous in oxygen distribution (not phase-separated) with Neel temperature T_{N}\approx 266 K. Conductivity of this sample has been determined by Mott's variable-range hopping below T_N. The other, far less resistive, sample with δ\approx 0.05, was inhomogeneous (phase-separated) showing both PM-AFM (T_N\…
We report on neutron-scattering results on the impact of a magnetic field on stripe order in the cuprate La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$. It is found that a 7 T magnetic field applied along the {\it c} axis causes a small but finite enhancement of the spin-order peak intensity and has no observable effect on the peak width. Inelastic neutron-scattering measurements indicate that the low-energy magnetic excitations are not affected by the field, within experimental error. In particular, the small energy gap that was recently reported is still present at low temperature in the applied field. In …
Exploring whether a spin density wave (SDW) is responsible for the charge excitations gap in the high-temperature superconducting cuprates is difficult, since the region of the phase diagram where the magnetic properties are clearly exposed is different from the region where the band dispersion is visible. On the one hand, long range magnetic order disappears as doping approaches 2% from below, hindering our ability to perform elastic neutron scattering (ENS). On the other hand, cuprates become insulating at low temperature when the doping approaches 2% from above, thus restricting angle-resol…
We report the local magnetic response of an electron-doped cuprate superconductor, Pr$_{0.89}$LaCe$_{0.11}$CuO$_{4}$ ($T_c\simeq26$ K), studied by muon spin rotation (\msr) over a field range from 200 Oe to 50 kOe. In the paramagnetic state, the muon Knight shift along the crystal c-axis ($K_μ^z$) is proportional to the in-plane susceptibility $χ_{ab}$. More surprisingly, $K_μ^z$ is strongly enhanced by the occurrence of superconductivity (below $\sim$40 kOe), changing its sign from positive to negative around $\sim1$ kOe with increasing field. This finding can be understood by considering the…
In this communication we consider the doping dependence of the strong antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the cuprate superconductors. We investigate the effect of an incommensurate magnetic response, as recently observed in inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments on several YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x} compounds, on the spin-lattice and spin-echo relaxation rates measured in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments. We conclude that a consistent theoretical description of INS and NMR can be reached if one assumes spatially inhomogeneous but locally commensurate spin correlations and that NM…
The pseudogap state is widely regarded as a precursor to high-temperature superconductivity yet remains poorly understood. Using high field (30 T) NMR, we report two electronically distinct oxygen sites within the copper-oxygen (Cu-O) planes of an underdoped cuprate in the pseudogap state. At temperatures well above the bulk superconducting transition, roughly 25% of the oxygen sites evidence superconducting pair formation, the remaining evidence antiferromagnetic ordering on the nearest neighbor Cu sites. Any superconducting fluctuations are slower than the microsecond timescales of the NMR p…
We report a Cu K- and L$_3$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of charge and spin excitations of bulk Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$, with focus on post-growth annealing effects. For the parent compound Nd$_2$CuO$_4$ ($x = 0$), a clear charge-transfer gap is observed in the as-grown state, whereas the charge excitation spectra indicate that electrons are doped in the annealed state. This is consistent with the observation that annealed thin-film and polycrystalline samples of RE$_2$CuO$_4$ (RE = rare earth) can become metallic and superconducting at sufficiently high electron concentratio…
The electron-doped cuprate Pr(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4) is investigated using infrared magneto-optical measurements. The optical Hall conductivity sigma_{xy} shows a strong doping, frequency and temperature dependence consistent with the presence of a temperature and doping-dependent coherent backscattering amplitude which doubles the electronic unit cell. The data suggest that the coherent backscattering vanishes at a quantum critical point inside the superconducting dome and is associated with the commensurate antiferromagnetic order observed by other workers. Using a spectral weight analysis we have …
By in-situ change of polarization a small splitting of the Zhang-Rice singlet state band near the Fermi level has been resolved for optimum doped (x=0.4) Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_{x}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ at the (pi,0)-point (R.Manzke et al. PRB 63, R100504 (2001). Here we treat the momentum dependence and lineshape of the split band by photoemission in the EDC-mode with very high angular and energy resolution. The splitting into two destinct emissions could also be observed over a large portion of the major symmetry line $Γ$M, giving the dispersion for the individual contributions. Since bi-layer effects …
The hole concentration dependence of the magnetic correlations is studied in very lightly-doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ ($x<$0.02), which shows coexistence of a three-dimensional antiferromagnetic (AF) long-range ordered phase and a spin-glass phase at low temperatures. It is found that the spin-glass phase in the coexistence region also shows a diagonal spin modulation as in the pure spin-glass phase in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (0.02$\le x\le$0.055). Below $x\sim$0.02 the diagonal stripe structure is the same as that in $x\sim$0.02 with a volume fraction almost proportional to hole concentrati…
Anelastic relaxation and $^{139}$La NQR relaxation measurements in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ for Sr content x around 2 and 3 percent, are presented and discussed in terms of spin and lattice excitations and ordering processes. It is discussed how the phase diagram of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ at the boundary between the antiferromagnetic (AF) and the spin-glass phase (x = 0.02) could be more complicate than previous thought, with a transition to a quasi-long range ordered state at T = 150 K, as indicated by recent neutron scattering data. On the other hand, the $^{139}$La NQR spectra are compatibl…
The in-plane normal-state resistivity of Zn-doped YBa2Cu3O7-d single crystals is measured down to low temperatures by suppressing superconductivity with magnetic fields up to 18 T. Substitution of Cu with Zn in the CuO2 planes is found to induce carrier localization at low temperatures in "clean" samples with kF l > 5, where the mean free path l is larger than the electron wave length and thus localization is not normally expected. The destruction of the local antiferromagnetic correlation among Cu spins by Zn is discussed to be the possible origin of this unusual charge localization.
