The in- and out-of-plane lower critical fields and magnetic penetration depths for LiFeAs were examined. The anisotropy ratio $γ_{H_{c1}}(0)$ is smaller than the expected theoretical value, and increased slightly with increasing temperature from 0.6$T_c$ to $T_c$. This small degree of anisotropy was numerically confirmed by considering electron correlation effect. The temperature dependence of the penetration depths followed a power law($\sim$$T^n$) below 0.3$T_c$, with $n$$>$3.5 for both $λ_{ab}$ and $λ_c$. Based on theoretical studies of iron-based superconductors, these results suggest that the superconductivity of LiFeAs can be represented by an extended $s_\pm$-wave due to weak impurity scattering effect. And the magnitudes of the two gaps were also evaluted by fitting the superfluid density for both the in- and out-of-plane to the two-gap model. The estimated values for the two gaps are consistent with the results of angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy and specific heat experiments.
The magnetic properties of LiFeAs, as single crystalline and polycrystalline samples, were investigated. The lower critical field deduced from the vortex penetration of two single crystals appears to be almost isotropic with a temperature dependence closer to that of two-gap superconductors. The parameters extracted from the reversible magnetizations of sintered polycrystalline samples are in good agreement with those from the single crystal data.
Miniature Hall-probe arrays were used to measure the critical current densities for the three main directions of vortex motion in the stoichiometric LiFeAs superconductor. These correspond to vortices oriented along the c-axis moving parallel to the ab-plane, and to vortices in the ab-plane moving perpendicular to, and within the plane, respectively. The measurements were carried out in the low-field regime of strong vortex pinning, in which the critical current anisotropy is solely determined by the coherence length anisotropy parameter, ε_ξ. This allows extraction of ε_ξ at magnetic fields f…
We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on Fe-based superconductor LiFeAs (Tc = 18 K). We reveal multiple nodeless superconducting (SC) gaps with 2D/kBTc ratios varying from 2.8 to 6.4, depending on the Fermi surface (FS). We also succeeded in directly observing a gap anisotropy along the FS with magnitude up to ~30 %. The anisotropy is four-fold symmetric with an antiphase between the hole and electron FSs, suggesting complex anisotropic interactions for the SC pairing. The observed momentum dependence of the SC gap offers an excellent opportunity to invest…
The longitudinal in-plane magnetoresistance (LMR) has been measured in different Ba(Fe_(1-x)Co_x)2As2 single crystals and in LiFeAs. For all these compounds, we find a negative LMR in the paramagnetic phase whose magnitude increases as H^2. We show that this negative LMR can be readily explained in terms of suppression of the spin fluctuations by the magnetic field. In the Co-doped samples, the absolute value of the LMR coefficient is found to decrease with doping content in the paramagnetic phase. The analysis of its T dependence in an itinerant nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquid model evi…
The upper critical field $μ_0H_{c2}(T_c)$ of LiFeAs single crystals has been determined by measuring the electrical resistivity using the facilities of pulsed magnetic field at Los Alamos. We found that $μ_0H_{c2}(T_c)$ of LiFeAs shows a moderate anisotropy among the layered iron-based superconductors; its anisotropic parameter $γ$ monotonically decreases with decreasing temperature and approaches $γ\simeq 1.5$ as $T\rightarrow 0$. The upper critical field reaches 15T ($H\parallel c$) and 24.2T ($H\parallel ab$) at $T=$1.4K, which value is much smaller than other iron-based high $T_c$ supercon…
We report on the upper critical field B_c2 of a superconducting LiFeAs single crystal with T_c~16 K, determined from magnetic torque measurements in dc-magnetic fields up to 35 T and at temperatures down to 0.3 K. B_c2 at 0.3 K is obtained to be 26.4 T and 15.5 T for the applied field B_a||ab and B_a||c, respectively. The anisotropy parameter $Γ$=$B_c2^ab / B_c2^c$ is ~ 3 at T_c and decreases to 1.7 as $T \rightarrow 0$, showing rather isotropic superconductivity. While B_c2 is orbitally-limited for B_a||c, the spin-paramagnetic effect is evident in the temperature dependence of B_c2 for B_a||…
Between the different families of pnictide multiband superconductors, LiFeAs is probably one of the less understood. Indeed, despite the large amount of experiments performed in the last few years on this material, no consensus has been reached yet on the possible pairing mechanism at play in this system. Here we focus on the precursor effects of superconductivity visible in the transport experiments performed above Tc. By analyzing the superconducting fluctuations in a layered multiband model appropriate for this material, we argue that the strong two-dimensional character of the paraconducti…
A LiFeAs single crystal with $T_c^{onset}$$\sim$19.7 K was grown successfully in a sealed tungsten crucible using the Bridgeman method. The electrical resistivity experiments revealed a ratio of room temperature to residual resistivity (RRR) of approximately 46 and 18 for the in-plane and out-of plane directions. The estimated anisotropic resistivity, $γ_ρ$=$ρ_c$ / $ρ_{ab}$, was approximately 3.3 at $T_c^{onset}$. The upper critical fields had large $H_{c2} ^{\shortparallel ab}$ and $H_{c2}^{\shortparallel c}$ values of 83.4 T and 72.5 T, respectively, and an anisotropy ratio is $γ_H$=$H_{c2}^…
The superconducting state of LiFeAs single crystals with the maximum critical temperature $T_c\,\approx\,17\,K$ in the 111 family has been studied in detail by multiple Andreev reflections (MAR) spectroscopy implemented by the break-junction technique. The three superconducting gaps, $Δ_Γ\,= (5.1-6.5)\,meV$, $Δ_L\,= (3.8-4.8)\,meV$, and $Δ_S\,= (0.9-1.9)\,meV$ (at $T\,<<\,T_c$), as well as their temperature dependences, have been directly determined in a tunneling experiment with these samples. The anisotropy degrees of the order parameters in the k-space have been estimated as $<\,8$%, $\appr…
The zero-field specific heat of LiFeAs was measured on several single crystals selected from a bulk sample. A sharp Delta Cp/Tc anomaly of approximately 20 mJ/(mole x K^2) was observed. The value appears to be between those of SmFeAs(O0.9F0.1) and (Ba0.6K0.4)Fe2As2, but bears no clear correlation with their Sommerfeld coefficients. The electronic specific heat below Tc further reveals a two-gap structure with the narrower one only on the order of 0.7 meV. While the results are in rough agreement with the Hc1(T) previously reported on both LiFeAs and (Ba0.6K0.4)Fe2As2, they are different from t…
We have synthesized two iron-pnictide/chalcogenide materials, CuFeTe2 and Fe2As, which share crystallographic features with known iron-based superconductors, and carried out high-pressure electrical resistivity measurements on these materials to pressures in excess of 30 GPa. Both compounds crystallize in the Cu2Sb-type crystal structure that is characteristic of LiFeAs (with CuFeTe2 exhibiting a disordered variant). At ambient pressure, CuFeTe2 is a semiconductor and has been suggested to exhibit a spin-density-wave transition, while Fe2As is a metallic antiferromagnet. The electrical resisti…
We investigate the fishtail effect, critical current density ($J_c$) and vortex dynamics in LiFeAs single crystals. The sample exhibits a second peak (SP) in the magnetization loop only with the field $||$ c-axis. We calculate a reasonably high $J_c$, however, values are lower than in 'Ba-122' and '1111'-type FeAs-compounds. Magnetic relaxation data imply a strong pinning which appears not to be due to conventional defects. Instead, its behavior is similar to that of the triplet superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. Our data suggest that the origin of the SP may be related to a vortex lattice phase tr…
We report results of microwave surface impedance measurements of LiFeAs single crystals. The in-plane penetration depth depends on temperature exponentially at low temperatures, which strongly suggests that this material has the nodeless superconducting gap. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density indicates that LiFeAs is a multi-gap superconductor with at least two isotropic gaps. In addtion, the real part of the microwave conductivity exhibits a large enhancement below $T_\mathrm{c}$, indicating that the quasi-particle relaxation time, $τ$, increases rapidly below $T_\mathrm{c}$…
In this letter, we reported the results of NMR study on LiFeAs single crystals. We find a strong evidence of the low temperature spin fluctuations; by changing sample preparation conditions, the system can be tuned toward an spin-density-wave (SDW) quantum-critical point. The detection of an interstitial Li(2) ion, possibly locating in the tetrahedral hole, suggests that the off-stoichiometry and/or lattice defect can probably account for the absence of the SDW ordering in LiFeAs. These facts show that LiFeAs is a strongly correlated system and the superconductivity is likely originated from t…
LiFeAs is one of the iron-based superconductors having multiple gaps with the possible sign reversal. To clarify how those novel natures affect the energy dissipation of magnetic vortices, we investigated the microwave surface impedance of LiFeAs single crystals under finite magnetic fields. The flux-flow resistivity enhanced rapidly at low magnetic fields, which is similar to the case of MgB$_{2}$. This is probably the consequence of the multiple-gap nature and the gap anisotropy. This suggest that the sign-reversal is not important for the flux-flow even for multiple-gap superconductors. As …
We report the successful growth of high quality single crystals of LiFeAs with lateral sizes up to 5 x 5 mm2 by the Sn-flux method. Electrical resistivity studies reveal that the superconducting onset temperature is 18.2 K with a transition width less than 1.1 K and the ratio of room temperature to residual resistivity is about 24. Bulk superconductivity is supported by perfect shielding in the magnetic susceptibility and a clear jump in the specific heat Cp, resulting in deltaCp/T ~ 20.0 mJ/mol*K2. Upper critical field slopes of dHc2c/dT ~ -1.39 and dHc2ab/dT ~ -2.99 T/K near Tc predict zero …
The superconducting compound, LiFeAs, is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. A gap map of the unreconstructed surface indicates a high degree of homogeneity in this system. Spectra at 2 K show two nodeless superconducting gaps with $Δ_1=5.3\pm0.1$ meV and $Δ_2=2.5\pm0.2$ meV. The gaps close as the temperature is increased to the bulk $T_c$ indicating that the surface accurately represents the bulk. A dip-hump structure is observed below $T_c$ with an energy scale consistent with a magnetic resonance recently reported by inelastic neutron scattering.
We present an inelastic neutron scattering study on single-crystalline LiFeAs devoted to the characterization of the incommensurate antiferromagnetic fluctuations at $\mathbf{Q}=(0.5\pmδ, 0.5\mpδ, q_l)$. Time-of-flight measurements show the presence of these magnetic fluctuations up to an energy transfer of 60 meV, while polarized neutrons in combination with longitudinal polarization analysis on a triple-axis spectrometer prove the pure magnetic origin of this signal. The normalization of the magnetic scattering to an absolute scale yields that magnetic fluctuations in LiFeAs are by a factor …
Spectroscopy of vortex bound states can provide valuable information on the structure of the superconducting order parameter. Quasiparticle wavefunctions are expected to leak out in the directions of gap minima or nodes, if they exist, and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) on these low-energy states should probe the momentum dependence of the gap. Anisotropy can also arise from band structure effects, however. We perform a quasiclassical calculation of the density of states of a single vortex in an anisotropic superconductor, and show that if the gap itself is not highly anisotropic, the F…
We have measured the reflectivity spectra of the iron based superconductor LiFeAs (Tc = 17.6 K) in the temperature range from 4 to 300 K. In the superconducting state (T < Tc), the clear opening of the optical absorption gap was observed below 25 cm-1, indicating an isotropic full gap formation. In the normal state (T > Tc), the optical conductivity spectra display a typical metallic behavior with the Drude type spectra at low frequencies, but we found that the introduction of the two Drude components best fits the data, indicating the multiband nature of this superconductor. A theoretical ana…
We have fabricated c-axis point contact junctions between high-quality LiFeAs single crystals and Pb or Au tips in order to study the nature of the superconducting order parameter of LiFeAs, one of the few stoichiometric iron-based superconductors. The observation of the Josephson current in c-axis junctions with a conventional s-wave superconductor as the counterelectrode indicates that the pairing symmetry in LiFeAs is not pure d-wave or pure spin-triplet p-wave. A superconducting gap is clearly observed in point contact Andreev reflection measurements performed on both Pb/LiFeAs and Au/LiFe…
The variations of in- and inter- plane London penetration depths, $Δλ(T)$, were measured using a tunnel diode resonator in single crystals of the intrinsic pnictide superconductor LiFeAs. This compound appears to be in the clean limit with a residual resistivity of 4 ($T\to0$) to 8 ($T_c$) $μΩ\cdot$cm and $RRR$ of 65 to 35, respectively. The superfluid density, $ρ_s(T)=λ^2(0)/λ^2(T)$, is well described by the self-consistent two-gap $γ-$model. Together with the previous data, our results support the universal evolution of the superconducting gap from nodeless to nodal upon departure from optim…
We have investigated the temperature-dependence of the upper critical field Hc2(T) in a LiFeAs single crystal by direct measurements of resistivity under static magnetic fields up to 36 T. We find in the case of a magnetic field H along the ab-plane that Hc2ab(0) = 30 T is clearly lower than the orbital limiting field Hc2orb,ab (0) = 39.6 T estimated by the |dHc2ab / dT|Tc, suggesting the presence of both Pauli- and orbital-limiting effects in the pair breaking process. The best fit of Hc2ab(T) to the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg formula results in the Maki parameter α = 0.9 and negligible spin…
We report specific heat capacity measurements on a LiFeAs single crystal at temperatures down to 400 mK and magnetic fields up to 9 Tesla. A small specific heat jump at Tc and finite residual density of states at T=0 K in the superconducting (SC) state indicate that there are strong unitary scatterers that lead to states within the SC gap. A sub-linear magnetic field dependence of the Sommerfeld coefficient γ(H) at T=0 K is equally well fitted by both a nodal d-wave gap as well as a sign changing multiband \pm s-wave gap. When impurity effects are taken into account, however, the linear temper…
We investigate vortices in LiFeAs using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy. Zero-field tunneling spectra show two superconducting gaps without detectable spectral weight near the Fermi energy, evidencing fully-gapped multi-band superconductivity. We image vortices in a wide field range from 0.1 T to 11 T by mapping the tunneling conductance at the Fermi energy. A quasi-hexagonal vortex lattice at low field contains domain boundaries which consist of alternating vortices with unusual coordination numbers of 5 and 7. With increasing field, the domain boundaries become ill-defined, result…
Measurements of the temperature and angular dependencies of the upper critical fields $H_{c2}$ of a stoichiometric single crystal LiFeAs in pulsed magnetic fields up to 50 T were performed using a tunnel diode resonator. Full $H^{\parallel c}_{c2}(T)$ and $H^{\bot c}_{c2}(T)$ curves with $H^{\parallel c}_{c2}(0)=17 \pm 1$ T, $H^{\bot c}_{c2}(0)=26 \pm 1$ T, and the anisotropy parameter ${γ_H}(T) \equiv H_{c2}^{\bot c}/H_{c2}^{\parallel c}$ decreasing from $\approx 2.5$ at $T_c$ to 1.5 at $T\ll T_c$ were observed. The results for both orientations are in excellent agreement with a theory of $H_…
We report fully momentum dependent, self-consistent calculations of the gap symmetry, Fermi surface (FS) anisotropy and Tc of superconducting (SC) LiFeAs using the experimental band structure and a realistic small-q electron phonon interaction within the framework of Migdal-Eliashberg theory. In the stoichiometric regime, we find the exact s++ gap as reported by ARPES. For slight deviations from stoichiometry towards electron doping, we find that a chiral triplet p_x+ip_y state stabilizes near Tc and that at lower temperatures a transition from the triplet to singlet s+- SC takes place. Furthe…
The lattice dynamics and the effect of pressure on superconducting LiFeAs in both nonmagnetic (NM) and striped antiferromagnetic (SAF) phases are investigated using the plane-wave pseudopotential, density-functional-based method. While the obtained electron-phonon coupling $λ$ is very small for the NM calculation, the softening of phonon in the SAF phase may lead to a large increase in $λ$. In the SAF phase, strong anisotropy of the phonon softening in the Fe plane is found to arise from different spin orders in the $x$ and $y$ directions, indicating that the phonon softening is of spin-phonon…
Identifying the uniqueness of FeP-based superconductors may shed new lights on the mechanism of superconductivity in iron-pnictides. Here, we report nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR) studies on LiFeP and LiFeAs which have the same crystal structure but different pnictogen atoms. The NMR spectrum is sensitive to inhomogeneous magnetic fields in the vortex state and can provide the information on the superconducting pairing symmetry through the temperature dependence of London penetration depth $λ_L$. We find that $λ_L$ saturates below $T \sim 0.2$ $T_c$ in LiFeAs, where $T_c$ is the superconducti…
We observe two types of superconducting states controlled by orientations of local wrinkles on the surface of LiFeAs. Using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, we find type-I wrinkles enlarge the superconducting gaps and enhance the transition temperature, whereas type-II wrinkles significantly suppress the superconducting gaps. The vortices on wrinkles show a C2 symmetry, indicating the strain effects on the wrinkles. A discontinuous switch of superconductivity occurs at the border between two different wrinkles. Our results demonstrate that the local strain effect could affect superc…
The thermal conductivity k of the iron-arsenide superconductor LiFeAs (Tc ~ 18K) was measured in single crystals at temperatures down to T~50mK and in magnetic fields up to H=17T, very close to the upper critical field Hc2~18T. For both directions of the heat current, parallel and perpendicular to the tetragonal c-axis, a negligible residual linear term k/T is found as T ->0, revealing that there are no zero-energy quasiparticles in the superconducting state. The increase in k with magnetic field is the same for both current directions and it follows closely the dependence expected for an isot…
We present specific heat, c_P, and ARPES data on single crystals of the stoichiometric superconductor LiFeAs. A pronounced anomaly is found in c_P at the superconducting transition. The electronic contribution can be described by two s-type energy gaps with magnitudes of approximately Delta1 = 1.2 meV and Delta2 = 2.6 meV and a normal-state gamma coefficient of 10 mJ/mol K^2. All these values are in remarkable agreement with ARPES results.
We utilize ultrafast optical measurement to study the quasiparticle relaxation in stoichiometric LiFeAs and nearly optimally doped (BaK)Fe2As2 crystals. According to our temperature-dependent studies of LiFeAs, we have observed pseudogap-like feature at onset temperature of ~ 55 K, which is above Tc = 15 K. In addition, the onset temperature of pseudogap ~90K was also observed in Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Tc = 36 K). Our findings seem implying that the pseudogap feature, which is due to antiferromagnetic fluctuations, is universal for the largely studied 11, 111, 122, and 1111 iron-based superconductor…
$^{75}$As NMR investigation of a single crystal of superconducting LiFeAs is presented. The Knight shift and the \textit{in situ} ac susceptibility measurements as a function of temperature and external field are indicative of two superconducting (SC) transition temperatures, each of which is associated with its own upper critical field. Strikingly, the Knight shift maintains its normal state value over a temperature range in the SC state before it drops abruptly being consistent with spin-singlet pairing. Together with our previous NMR study, the anomalous SC state featured by the constant Kn…
We utilize a combination of vector magnetic field and scanning tunneling microscopy to elucidate the 3D field-based electronic phase diagram of a correlated iron-based superconductor, LiFeAs. We observe, under a zero-field-cooled method, an ordered hexagonal vortex lattice ground-state in contrast to the disordered lattice observed under a field-cooled method. It transforms into a four-fold-symmetric state by increasing c-axis field and distorts elliptically upon tilting the field in-plane. The vortex lattice transformations correlate with the field dependent superconducting gap that character…
The lack of nesting of the electron and hole Fermi-surface sheets in the Fe-based superconductor LiFeAs, with a critical temperature of 18 K, has led to questions as to whether the origin of superconductivity in this material might be different from other Fe-based superconductors. Both angle-resolved photoemission and quasiparticle interference experiments have reported fully gapped superconducting order parameters with significant anisotropy. The system is also of interest because relatively strong correlations seem to be responsible for significant renormalization of the hole bands. Here we …
In our tunneling investigation using Andreev superconductor - normal metal - superconductor contacts on LiFeAs single crystals we observed two reproducible independent subharmonic gap structures at dynamic conductance characteristics. From these results, we can derive the energy of the large superconducting gap $Δ_L=(2.5 ÷3.4)$ meV and the small gap $Δ_L=(0.9 ÷1)$ meV at $T = 4.2$ K for the $T_C^{local} \approx (10.5 ÷14)$ K (the contact area critical temperature which deviation causes the variation of $Δ_L$). The BCS-ratio is found to be $2Δ_L/k_BT_C = (4.6 ÷5.6)$, whereas $2Δ_S/k_BT_C \ll 3.…
A true critical current density, $j_{c}$, as opposite to commonly measured relaxed persistent (Bean) current, $j_{B}$, was extracted from the Campbell penetration depth, $λ_{C}(T,H)$ measured in single crystals of LiFeAs. The effective pinning potential is non-parabolic, which follows from the magnetic field - dependent Labusch parameter $α$. At the equilibrium (upon field - cooling), $α(H)$ is non-monotonic, but it is monotonic at a finite gradient of the vortex density. This behavior leads to a faster magnetic relaxation at the lower fields and provides a natural \emph{dynamic} explanation f…
We have performed temperature dependent tunneling spectroscopy on an impurity-free surface area of a LiFeAs single crystal. Our data reveal a highly unusual temperature evolution of superconductivity: at $T_c^*=18$~K a partial superconducting gap opens, as is evidenced by subtle, yet clear features in the tunneling spectra, i.e. particle-hole symmetric coherence peaks, and a dip-hump structure which signals strong-coupling superconductivity. At $T_c=16$~K, these features substantiate dramatically and become characteristic of full superconductivity. Remarkably, this is accompanied by an almost …
LiFeAs is unique among the arsenic based Fe-pnictide superconductors because it is the only nearly stoichiometric compound which does not exhibit magnetic order. This is at odds with electronic structure calculations which and a very stable magnetic state and predict cylindrical hole- and electron-like Fermi surface sheets whose geometry suggests spin uctuations and a possible instability toward long-range ordering at the nesting vector. In fact, a complex magnetic phase-diagram is indeed observed in the isostructural NaFeAs compound. Previous angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) experiments r…
Magnetometry measurements in high quality LiFeAs single-crystals reveal a change in the sign of the magnetic hysteresis in the vicinity of the upper critical field $H_{c2}$, from a clear diamagnetic response dominated by the pinning of vortices, to a considerably smaller net hysteretic response of opposite sign, which \emph{disappears} at $H_{c2}$. If the diamagnetic response at high fields results from pinned vortices and associated screening super-currents, this sign change must result from currents circulating in the opposite sense, which give rise to a small field-dependent magnetic moment…
LiFeAs is one of the new class of iron superconductors with a bulk onset Tc in the 15-17 K range. We report on the specific heat characterization of single crystal material prepared from self-flux growth techniques with significantly improved properties, including a much decreased residual gamma (proportional to C/T as T->0) in the superconducting state. Thus, in contrast to previous explanations of a finite residual gamma in LiFeAs being due to intrinsic states in the superconducting gap, the present work shows that such a finite residual gamma in LiFeAs is instead a function of sample qualit…
We report heat capacity measurements of the pnictide materials SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$, NdFeAsO, LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ and LiFeAs. For SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$, with x close to 0.1, we use 3 He measurements to demonstrate a transfer of entropy from the peak at TN to a previously unidentified ~2 K feature which grows with increasing doping. Our results on the Sm samples are compared with a similarly doped La sample to elucidate the crystal field levels of the Sm3+ ion at 0, 23, and 56 meV which lead to a Schottky-like anomaly, and also show that there is a significant increase in the Sommerfeld coeffic…
We present a study of the magnetic susceptibility in carefully detwinned La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_4 single crystals in the lightly-doped region (x=0-0.03), which demonstrates a remarkable in-plane anisotropy of the spin system. This anisotropy is found to persist after the long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) order is destroyed by hole doping, suggesting that doped holes break the AF order into domains in which the spin alignment is kept essentially intact. It turns out that the freezing of the spins taking place at low temperatures is also notably anisotropic, implying that the "spin-glass" feature is …
The parent phases of the Fe-arsenide superconductors harbor an antiferromagnetic ground state. Significantly, the Néel transition is either preceded or accompanied by a structural transition that breaks the four fold symmetry of the high-temperature lattice. Borrowing language from the field of soft condensed matter physics, this broken discrete rotational symmetry is widely referred to as an Ising nematic phase transition. Understanding the origin of this effect is a key component of a complete theoretical description of the occurrence of superconductivity in this family of compounds, motivat…
The results of a computer analysis of a simple 2D quantum mechanical tunnelling model are reported. These suggest that the spatial dependence of the superconducting energy gap observed by Scanning Tunnelling Spectroscopy (STS) studies of single crystals of the high Tc superconductor Bi:2212 is not necessarily caused by nanoscale inhomogeneity. Instead the spatial dependence of the STS data could arise from the momentum (k) dependence of the energy gap, which is a defining feature of a d-wave superconductor. It is possible that this viewpoint could be exploited to obtain k-dependent information…
We have revealed new features in the out-of-plane resistivity rho_c of heavily underdoped RBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x} (R=Tm,Lu) single crystals, which give evidence for two distinct mechanisms contributing the c-axis transport. We have observed a crossover towards "metal-like" (d rho_c/d T > 0) behavior at the temperature T_m which quickly increases with decreasing doping. The "metal-like" conductivity contribution dominates at T < T_m and provides a saturation of the resistivity anisotropy, rho_c / rho_{ab}. The antiferromagnetic ordering is found to block this "metal-like" part of the c-axis conductivi…
We examine the superconducting anisotropy $γ_c = (m_c / m_{ab})^{1/2}$ of a metallic high-$T_c$ superconductor MgB$_2$ by measuring the magnetic torque of a single crystal. The anisotropy $γ_c$ does not depend sensitively on the applied magnetic field at 10 K. We obtain the anisotropy parameter $γ_c = 4.31 \pm 0.14$. The torque curve shows the sharp hysteresis peak when the field is applied parallel to the boron layers. This comes from the intrinsic pinning and is experimental evidence for the occurrence of superconductivity in the boron layers.
In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. B 66, 012501 (2002)], torque data measured on a MgB2 single crystal in fields from 10 to 60 kOe at 10 K were presented. The authors obtained the anisotropy gamma by fitting a theoretical expression to the data and concluded that the anisotropy is field independent gamma \approx 4.3. They also reported the observation of "intrinsic pinning", which they take as experimental evidence for the occurence of superconductivity in the boron layers. In this comment, we discuss the range of validity of the theoretical expression used by the authors and show that the conclusi…
By means of contactless mechanical method of the measurement of energy losses in superconductors, the anisotropy of dissipation processes has been studied in single crystal high-temperature layered superconductors of Yba2Cu3O7-d system, being in mixed state. The observed anisotropy of energy losses indicates the possibility of the existence of the symmetry of order parameter of dx2-y2 type in these single crystals.
The upper critical field Hc2 anisotropy of Ca10(PtnAs8)(Fe2-xPtxAs2)5 (n = 3, 4) single crystals with long FeAs interlayer distance (d) was studied by angular dependent resistivity measurements. A scaling of the angular dependent resistivity was realized for both single crystals using the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau (AGL) approach with an appropriate anisotropy parameter γ. The AGL scaling parameter γ increases with decreasing temperature and reaches a value of about 10 at 0.8Tc for both single crystals. These values are much larger than those of other iron-based superconductors (FeSCs). Remar…
An overdoped YBa2Cu3O7 single crystal was studied by SQUID and torque magnetometry in order to investigate the temperature dependence of the anisotropy parameter close to the transition temperature T_c (0.87 T_c < T < T_c). Angle dependent torque measurements were performed and analyzed with the widely used Kogan model [Phys. Rev. B 38, 7049 (1988)] as well as with an extended model by Hao and Clem [Phys. Rev. Lett. 67, 2371 (1991)], taking into account the influence of the vortex cores on the magnetization. Both approaches yield similar results, with an out-of-plane anisotropy parameter aroun…
NbBiCh$_3$ (Ch = S, Se) misfit-layered superconducting single crystals were successfully grown using a CsCl/KCl flux for the first time. The obtained crystals had a well-developed habit parallel to the c-plane with a typical width of 1-2 mm and thickness of 10-40 um. The superconducting transition temperatures with zero resistivity of NbBiS$_3$ single crystals obtained from the nominal composition of Nb0.9Bi1.2S3 was 0.31 K, and that value of the NbBiSe$_3$ single crystals grown from the stoichiometry composition (NbBiSe$_3$) was 2.3 K. Sharp decreases in electric resistivity and magnetic susc…
The influence of low-level Pr substitution in Y1-xPrxBa2Cu3O(7-delta) single crystals on the anisotropy of the superconducting state parameters was investigated by torque magnetometry in magnetic fields of up to 9 T. An averaged anisotropy parameter, γ, of 7.4 was found and no influence of the Pr ion concentration on γwas observed up to a Pr content of 2.4%. A pronounced maximum at angles between 0.5 and 1 degree out of the ab-plane was observed in all crystals in the irreversible angular dependence of the torque. This maximum is attributed to intrinsic pinning associated with kinked vortices.…
We have studied the anisotropy of the London penetration depth, which was obtained from reversible magnetization measurements with the magnetic field both parallel and perpendicular to the c-axis. The anisotropy of the London penetration depth has a smaller magnitude than the anisotropy of the upper critical field and increases with temperature while that of the upper critical field decreases as reported earlier. This behavior is in sharp contrast with the behaviors of superconductors with one superconducting energy gap. The temperature dependence of the anisotropies of the London penetration …
Recently, two-fold symmetric in-plane anisotropy of the superconducting properties have been observed in a single crystal of BiCh2-based (Ch: S, Se) layered superconductor LaO0.5F0.5BiSSe having a tetragonal (four-fold-symmetric) in-plane structure; the phenomena are very similar to those observed in nematic superconductors. To explore the origin of the two-fold symmetric anisotropy in the BiCh2-based system, we have investigated the electron-doping dependence on the anisotropy by examining the in-plane anisotropy of the magnetoresistance in the superconducting states for a single crystal of L…
Quasi-single crystals (up to 2x2x1 mm3) of Na0.35CoO2.1.3H2O-superconductor have been grown. Magnetization M(H, T) and M(T, H) curves with magnetic field approximately parallel and perpendicular to c-axis indicates on large anisotropy, comparable with Bi-based high-temperature superconducting (HTS) phases.
The temperature dependent resistivity of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ (x = 0.23, 0.25, 0.28 and 0.4) single crystals and the angle dependent resistivity of superconducting Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals were measured in magnetic fields up to 9 T. The measurements of temperature dependent resistivity for samples with different doping levels revealed very high upper critical fields which increase with the transition temperature monotonously, and a very low superconducting anisotropy ratio $Γ=H_{c2}^{ab}/H_{c2}^c \approx$ 2. By scaling the resistivity in the frame of the anisotrop…
Single crystals of Rb{0.8}Fe2Se2 are successfully synthesized with the superconducting transition temperatures T_c{onset}= 31 K and T_c{zero}= 28 K. A clear anomaly of resistivity was observed in the normal state at about 150 K, as found in a similar system KxFe2Se2. The upper critical field has been determined with the magnetic field along ab-plane and c-axis, yielding an anisotropy of about 3.5. The angle dependent resistivity measured below T_c allow a perfect scaling feature based on the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau theory, leading to a consistent value of the anisotropy which decreases fro…
