We have performed temperature dependent tunneling spectroscopy on an impurity-free surface area of a LiFeAs single crystal. Our data reveal a highly unusual temperature evolution of superconductivity: at $T_c^*=18$~K a partial superconducting gap opens, as is evidenced by subtle, yet clear features in the tunneling spectra, i.e. particle-hole symmetric coherence peaks, and a dip-hump structure which signals strong-coupling superconductivity. At $T_c=16$~K, these features substantiate dramatically and become characteristic of full superconductivity. Remarkably, this is accompanied by an almost jump-like increase of the gap energy at $T_c$ to about 87\% of its low-temperature gap value. The energy of the bosonic mode as measured by the distance between the coherence peak and the higher-energy dip remains practically constant in the whole temperature regime $T\leq T_c^*$. The comparison of these findings with established experimental and theoretical results lead us to suggest that the bosonic mode is not directly related to incommensurate spin fluctuations that have previously been observed in inelastic neutron scattering.
A new iron arsenide superconducting system LiFeAs was found that crystallizes into a tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm. The superconductivity with Tc up to 18 K was observed in the compounds. This simple 111 type layered iron arsenide superconductor can be viewed as an analogue of the infinite layer structure of copper oxides.
The lithium ions in Lithium iron arsenide phases with compositions close to LiFeAs have been located using powder neutron diffraction. These phases exhibit superconductivity at temperatures at least as high as 16 K demonstrating that superconductivity in compounds with [FeAs]- anti-PbO-type anionic layers occurs in compounds with at least three different structure types and occurs for a wide range of As-Fe-As bond angles.
We measured the optical conductivity of superconducting LiFeAs. In the superconducting state, the formation of the condensate leads to a spectral-weight loss and yields a penetration depth of 225 nm. No sharp signature of the superconducting gap is observed. This suggests that the system is likely in the clean limit. A Drude-Lorentz parametrization of the data in the normal state reveals a quasiparticle scattering rate supportive of spin fluctuations and proximity to a quantum critical point.
A combined density functional theory and functional renormalization group method is introduced which takes into account orbital-dependent interaction parameters to derive the effective low-energy theory of weakly to intermediately correlated Fermi systems. As an application, the competing fluctuations in LiFeAs are investigated, which is the main representative of the 111 class of iron pnictides displaying no magnetic order, but superconductivity, for the parent compound. The superconducting order parameter is found to be of s+- type driven by collinear antiferromagnetic fluctuations. They eve…
If strong electron-electron interactions between neighboring Fe atoms mediate the Cooper pairing in iron-pnictide superconductors, then specific and distinct anisotropic superconducting energy gaps Δ_i(k) should appear on the different electronic bands i. Here we introduce intra-band Bogoliubov quasiparticle scattering interference (QPI) techniques for determination of Δ_i(k) in such materials, focusing on LiFeAs. We identify the three hole-like bands assigned previously as γ, α_2 and α_1, and we determine the anisotropy, magnitude and relative orientations of their Δ_i(k). These measurements …
We report fully momentum dependent, self-consistent calculations of the gap symmetry, Fermi surface (FS) anisotropy and Tc of superconducting (SC) LiFeAs using the experimental band structure and a realistic small-q electron phonon interaction within the framework of Migdal-Eliashberg theory. In the stoichiometric regime, we find the exact s++ gap as reported by ARPES. For slight deviations from stoichiometry towards electron doping, we find that a chiral triplet p_x+ip_y state stabilizes near Tc and that at lower temperatures a transition from the triplet to singlet s+- SC takes place. Furthe…
The relationship between unconventional superconductivity, antiferromagnetism and nematic order in iron-based superconductors (FeSCs) is still highly debated. In many FeSCs superconductivity is in proximity of a nematically and magnetically ordered state. LiFeAs is an exceptional stoichiometric FeSC becoming superconducting below 18 K, without undergoing a structural or magnetic transition. However, some recent experimental studies suggested the existence of finite nematic fluctuations and even a nematic superconducting state. In this study, we employ elastoresistance as a measure of nematic f…
In this letter, we reported the results of NMR study on LiFeAs single crystals. We find a strong evidence of the low temperature spin fluctuations; by changing sample preparation conditions, the system can be tuned toward an spin-density-wave (SDW) quantum-critical point. The detection of an interstitial Li(2) ion, possibly locating in the tetrahedral hole, suggests that the off-stoichiometry and/or lattice defect can probably account for the absence of the SDW ordering in LiFeAs. These facts show that LiFeAs is a strongly correlated system and the superconductivity is likely originated from t…
The nonadiabatic Heisenberg model predicts a structural distortion in LiFeAs below a temperature higher than (or at least equal to) the superconducting transition temperature. Within this group-theoretical model, the reduction of the symmetry caused by the distortion is a prerequisite for the superconducting state in this compound and can be realized by a mere displacement of the iron atoms from their positions in the space group P4/nmm.
Superconducting pnictides are widely found to feature spin-singlet pairing in the vicinity of an antiferromagnetic phase, for which nesting between electron and hole Fermi surfaces is crucial. LiFeAs differs from the other pnictides by (i) poor nesting properties and (ii) unusually shallow hole pockets. Investigating magnetic and pairing instabilities in an electronic model that incorporates these differences, we find antiferromagnetic order to be absent. Instead we observe almost ferromagnetic fluctuations which drive an instability toward spin-triplet p-wave superconductivity.
We use neutron scattering to study vanadium (hole)-doped LiFe$_{1-x}$V$_x$As. In the undoped state, LiFeAs exhibits superconductivity at $T_c=18$ K and transverse incommensurate spin excitations similar to electron overdoped iron pnictides. Upon vanadium-doping to form LiFe$_{0.955}$V$_{0.045}$, the transverse incommensurate spin excitations in LiFeAs transform into longitudinally elongated in a similar fashion as that of potassium (hole) doped Ba$_{0.7}$K$_{0.3}$Fe$_2$As$_2$, but with dramatically enhanced magnetic scattering and elimination of superconductivity. This is different from the su…
Nodal superconductivity is observed in LiFeP while its counterpart LiFeAs with similar topology and orbital content of the Fermi surfaces is a nodeless superconductor. We explain this difference by solving, in the two-Fe Brillouin zone, the frequency-dependent Eliashberg equations with spin-fluctuation mediated pairing interaction. Because of Fermi surface topology details, in LiFeAs all the Fe-$t_{2g}$ orbitals favor a common pairing symmetry. By contrast, in LiFeP the $d_{xy}$ orbital favors a pairing symmetry different from $d_{xz/yz}$ and their competition determines the pairing symmetry a…
The optical properties of LiFeAs with $T_c \simeq$ 18 K have been determined in the normal and superconducting states. The superposition of two Drude components yields a good description of the low-frequency optical response in the normal state. Below $T_c$, the optical conductivity reveals two isotropic superconducting gaps with $Δ_{1} \simeq 2.9$ $\pm$ 0.2 meV and $Δ_{2} \simeq 5.5$ $\pm$ 0.4 meV. A comparison between the superconducting-state Mattis-Bardeen and the normal-state Drude components, in combination with a spectral weight analysis, indicates that the spectral weight associated wi…
The resistivity, Hall effect and transverse magnetoresistance (MR) have been measured in low residual resistivity single crystals of LiFeAs. A comparison with angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy and quantum oscillation data implies that four carrier bands unevenly contribute to the transport. However the scattering rates of the carriers all display the T^2 behavior expected for a Fermi liquid. Near Tc low field deviations of the MR with respect to a H^2 variation permit us to extract the superconducting fluctuation contribution to the conductivity. Though below Tc the anisotropy of super…
The particular shape of the Fermi surface can give rise to a number of collective quantum phenomena in solids, such as density wave orderings or even superconductivity. In many new iron superconductors this shape, the 'nested' Fermi surface, is indeed observed, but its role in the formation of spin-density waves or superconductivity is not clear. We have studied the electronic structure of the non-magnetic LiFeAs (Tc~18K) superconductor using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We find a notable absence of the Fermi surface nesting, strong renormalization of the conduction bands by a fa…
The variations of in- and inter- plane London penetration depths, $Δλ(T)$, were measured using a tunnel diode resonator in single crystals of the intrinsic pnictide superconductor LiFeAs. This compound appears to be in the clean limit with a residual resistivity of 4 ($T\to0$) to 8 ($T_c$) $μΩ\cdot$cm and $RRR$ of 65 to 35, respectively. The superfluid density, $ρ_s(T)=λ^2(0)/λ^2(T)$, is well described by the self-consistent two-gap $γ-$model. Together with the previous data, our results support the universal evolution of the superconducting gap from nodeless to nodal upon departure from optim…
We report neutron inelastic scattering measurements on the stoichiometric iron-based superconductor LiFeAs. We find evidence for (i) magnetic scattering consistent with strong antiferromagnetic fluctuations, and (ii) an increase in intensity in the superconducting state at low energies, similar to the resonant magnetic excitation observed in other iron-based superconductors. The results do not support a recent theoretical prediction of spin-triplet p-wave superconductivity in LiFeAs, and instead suggest that the mechanism of superconductivity is similar to that in the other iron-based supercon…
Precise gap structure in LiFeAs (Tc = 18 K) given by ARPES studies offers us significant information to understand the pairing mechanism in iron-based superconductors. The most remarkable characteristics in LiFeAs gap structure would be that "the largest gap emerges on the tiny hole-pockets around Z point". This result had been naturally explained in terms of the orbital-fluctuation scenario (T. Saito et al., Phys. Rev. B 90, 035104 (2014)), whereas an opposite result is obtained by the spin-fluctuation scenario. In this paper, we study the gap structure in LiFeAs by taking the spin-orbit inte…
In conventional s-wave superconductors, only magnetic impurities exhibit impurity bound states, whereas for an s+- order parameter they can occur for both magnetic and non-magnetic impurities. Impurity bound states in superconductors can thus provide important insight into the order parameter. Here, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study of native and engineered iron-site defects in LiFeAs. Detailed comparison of tunneling spectra measured on impurities with spin fluctuation theory reveals a continuous evolution from negligible impurity bound state features for weaker scatter…
Amongst the iron-based superconductors, LiFeAs is unrivalled in the simplicity of its crystal structure and phase diagram. However, our understanding of this canonical compound suffers from conflict between mutually incompatible descriptions of the material's electronic structure, as derived from contradictory interpretations of the photoemission record. Here, we explore the challenge of interpretation in such experiments. By combining comprehensive photon energy- and polarization- dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements with numerical simulations, we establish…
Detailed tunneling spectroscopy of vortex core states can provide important insight to the momentum structure of the superconducting order parameter. We present a theoretical study of vortex bound states in iron-based superconductors by use of a realistic five-band model relevant to these systems, and superconductivity stabilized by spin-fluctuation generated pairing vertices yielding an $s\pm$ gap structure. The computed local density of states agrees remarkably well with both the bias dependence of the local conductance and the spatial structure of the low-bias conductance as obtained by sca…
We report the successful growth of high quality single crystals of LiFeAs with lateral sizes up to 5 x 5 mm2 by the Sn-flux method. Electrical resistivity studies reveal that the superconducting onset temperature is 18.2 K with a transition width less than 1.1 K and the ratio of room temperature to residual resistivity is about 24. Bulk superconductivity is supported by perfect shielding in the magnetic susceptibility and a clear jump in the specific heat Cp, resulting in deltaCp/T ~ 20.0 mJ/mol*K2. Upper critical field slopes of dHc2c/dT ~ -1.39 and dHc2ab/dT ~ -2.99 T/K near Tc predict zero …
The effect of hydrostatic pressure on the superconductivity in LiFeAs is investigated up to 1.8 GPa. The superconducting transition temperature, T_c, decreases linearly with pressure at a rate of 1.5 K/GPa. The negative pressure coefficient of T_c and the high ambient pressure T_c indicate that LiFeAs is the high-pressure analogue of the isoelectronic SrFe_2As_2 and BaFe_2As_2.
In our tunneling investigation using Andreev superconductor - normal metal - superconductor contacts on LiFeAs single crystals we observed two reproducible independent subharmonic gap structures at dynamic conductance characteristics. From these results, we can derive the energy of the large superconducting gap $Δ_L=(2.5 ÷3.4)$ meV and the small gap $Δ_L=(0.9 ÷1)$ meV at $T = 4.2$ K for the $T_C^{local} \approx (10.5 ÷14)$ K (the contact area critical temperature which deviation causes the variation of $Δ_L$). The BCS-ratio is found to be $2Δ_L/k_BT_C = (4.6 ÷5.6)$, whereas $2Δ_S/k_BT_C \ll 3.…
We investigate the electronic and other properties of the hypothetical compound LiFeSb in relation to superconducting LiFeAs and FeSe using density functional calculations. The results show that LiFeSb in the LiFeAs structure would be dynamically stable in the sense of having no unstable phonon modes, and would have very similar electronic and magnetic properties to the layered Fe based superconductors. Importantly, a very similar structure for the Fermi surface and a spin density wave related to but stronger than that in the corresponding As compound is found. These results are indicative of …
We present a microscopic investigation of frequently observed impurity-induced states in stoichiometric LiFeAs using low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS). Our data reveal seven distinct well defined defects which are discernible in topographic measurements. Depending on their local topographic symmetry, we are able to assign five defect types to specific lattice sites at the Li, Fe and As positions. The most prominent result is that two different defect types have a remarkably different impact on the superconducting state. A specific and quite abundant Fe-de…
Conventional Cooper pairing arises from attractive interaction of electrons in the metallic bands. Recent experiment on Co-doped LiFeAs shows superconductivity in the insulating valence band, which is evolved from a metallic hole band upon doping. Here we examine this phenomenon by studying superconductivity in a three-orbital Hamiltonian relevant to the doped LiFeAs. We show explicitly that Cooper pairing of the insulating hole band requires a finite pairing interaction strength. For strong coupling, the superconductivity in the hole band is robust against the sink of the hole band below the …
We revisit the issue of the gap symmetry in KFe2As2, which is an Fe-pnictide superconductor with only hole pockets. Previous theoretical studies mostly argued for a d-wave gap in KFe2As2 since transport and thermodynamic measurements point to the presence of the gap nodes. However, a d-wave gap is inconsistent with recent laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements. We propose the scenario for a nodal s-wave superconductivity induced by a non-magnetic intra-band and inter-band interactions between fermions near hole pockets. The superconducting gap changes sign between the hole pocke…
We investigate vortices in LiFeAs using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy. Zero-field tunneling spectra show two superconducting gaps without detectable spectral weight near the Fermi energy, evidencing fully-gapped multi-band superconductivity. We image vortices in a wide field range from 0.1 T to 11 T by mapping the tunneling conductance at the Fermi energy. A quasi-hexagonal vortex lattice at low field contains domain boundaries which consist of alternating vortices with unusual coordination numbers of 5 and 7. With increasing field, the domain boundaries become ill-defined, result…
The lack of nesting of the electron and hole Fermi-surface sheets in the Fe-based superconductor LiFeAs, with a critical temperature of 18 K, has led to questions as to whether the origin of superconductivity in this material might be different from other Fe-based superconductors. Both angle-resolved photoemission and quasiparticle interference experiments have reported fully gapped superconducting order parameters with significant anisotropy. The system is also of interest because relatively strong correlations seem to be responsible for significant renormalization of the hole bands. Here we …
Cooper pairing in the iron-based high-Tc superconductors is often conjectured to involve bosonic fluctuations. Among the candidates are antiferromagnetic spin-fluctuations and d-orbital fluctuations amplified by phonons. Any such electron-boson interaction should alter the electron's `self-energy', and then become detectable through consequent modifications in the energy dependence of the electron's momentum and lifetime. Here we introduce a theoretical/experimental approach aimed at identifying the relevant fluctuations of iron-based superconductors by measuring effects of their self-energy. …
We study LiFeP, LiFeAs and NaFeAs in their paramagnetic metallic phase including dynamical electronic correlations within a density functional theory + slave-spin mean-field framework. The three compounds are found to lie next to the crossover between a normal and a Hund's metal, where a region of enhanced electronic compressibility that may boost superconductivity is systematically present in this type of systems. We find that LiFeP lies in the normal metallic regime, LiFeAs at the crossover, and NaFeAs is in the Hund's metal regime, which possibly explains the different experimental trends f…
We analyze the structure of the pairing interaction and superconducting gap in LiFeAs by decomposing the pairing interaction for various kz cuts into s- and d-wave components and by studying the leading superconducting instabilities. We use the ten orbital tight-binding model, derived from ab-initio LDA calculations with hopping parameters extracted from the fit to ARPES experiments. We find that the pairing interaction almost decouples between two subsets, one consists of the outer hole pocket and two electron pockets, which are quasi-2D and are made largely out of dxy orbital, and the other …
In many high temperature superconductors, small orthorhombic distortions of the lattice structure result in surprisingly large symmetry breaking of the electronic states and macroscopic properties, an effect often referred to as nematicity. To directly study the impact of symmetry-breaking lattice distortions on the electronic states, using low-temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy we image at the atomic scale the influence of strain-tuned lattice distortions on the correlated electronic states in the iron-based superconductor LiFeAs, a material which in its ground state is tetragonal, wi…
We report on the upper critical field B_c2 of a superconducting LiFeAs single crystal with T_c~16 K, determined from magnetic torque measurements in dc-magnetic fields up to 35 T and at temperatures down to 0.3 K. B_c2 at 0.3 K is obtained to be 26.4 T and 15.5 T for the applied field B_a||ab and B_a||c, respectively. The anisotropy parameter $Γ$=$B_c2^ab / B_c2^c$ is ~ 3 at T_c and decreases to 1.7 as $T \rightarrow 0$, showing rather isotropic superconductivity. While B_c2 is orbitally-limited for B_a||c, the spin-paramagnetic effect is evident in the temperature dependence of B_c2 for B_a||…
The in- and out-of-plane lower critical fields and magnetic penetration depths for LiFeAs were examined. The anisotropy ratio $γ_{H_{c1}}(0)$ is smaller than the expected theoretical value, and increased slightly with increasing temperature from 0.6$T_c$ to $T_c$. This small degree of anisotropy was numerically confirmed by considering electron correlation effect. The temperature dependence of the penetration depths followed a power law($\sim$$T^n$) below 0.3$T_c$, with $n$$>$3.5 for both $λ_{ab}$ and $λ_c$. Based on theoretical studies of iron-based superconductors, these results suggest that…
Identifying the uniqueness of FeP-based superconductors may shed new lights on the mechanism of superconductivity in iron-pnictides. Here, we report nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR) studies on LiFeP and LiFeAs which have the same crystal structure but different pnictogen atoms. The NMR spectrum is sensitive to inhomogeneous magnetic fields in the vortex state and can provide the information on the superconducting pairing symmetry through the temperature dependence of London penetration depth $λ_L$. We find that $λ_L$ saturates below $T \sim 0.2$ $T_c$ in LiFeAs, where $T_c$ is the superconducti…
The absence of nesting between electron and hole-pockets in LiFeAs with $T_c = 18$K attracts great attention, as an important hint to understand the pairing mechanism of Fe-based superconductors. Here, we study the five-orbital model of LiFeAs based on the recently-developed orbital-spin fluctuation theories. It is found that the experimentally observed gap structure of LiFeAs, which is a "fingerprint" of the pairing mechanism, is quantitatively reproduced in terms of the orbital-fluctuation-mediated $s_{++}$-wave state. Especially, the largest gap observed on the small two hole-pockets compos…
The behavior of electrical resistivity rho(T), temperature of superconducting transition Tc, and upper critical field Hc2(T) of polycrystalline YNi2B2C after irradiation with thermal neutron and subsequent high-temperature isochronous annealings in the temperature range Tann = 100 - 1000C has been studied.
We demonstrate that the healing of two-band superconductivity near the surface of the system is governed by length scales which are drastically different from correlation lengths. Similar to the one-band case, one of the characteristic lengths diverges at critical temperature $T_c$, while another one shows unusual behaviour having singularity at $T_{c+}<T_c$. By moving away from the boundary, these scales approach coherence lengths in the bulk state, where the divergence at $T_{c+}$ is removed by arbitrary weak interband coupling. Such a boundary-driven modification in coherency affects proxim…
We use neutron scattering, to study magnetic excitations in crystals near the ideal superconducting composition of FeTe$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$. Two types of excitations are found, a resonance at (0.5, 0.5, 0) and incommensurate fluctuations on either side of this position. We show that the two sets of magnetic excitations behave differently with doping, with the resonance being fixed in position while the incommensurate excitations move as the doping is changed. These unusual results show that a common behavior of the low energy magnetic excitations is not necessary for pairing in these materials.
We present a detailed study of the temperature (T) and magnetic field (H) dependence of the electronic density of states (DOS) at the Fermi level, as deduced from specific heat and Knight shift measurements in underdoped YBa2Cu3Oy. We find that the DOS becomes field-independent above a characteristic field H_{DOS} and that the H_{DOS}(T) line displays an unusual inflection near the onset of the long range 3D charge-density wave order. The unusual S-shape of H_{DOS}(T) is suggestive of two mutually-exclusive orders that eventually establish a form of cooperation in order to coexist at low T. On…
Co-doped BaFe2As2 has been previously shown to have an unusually significant improvement of Tc (up to 2 K, or almost 10%) with annealing 1-2 weeks at 700 or 800 C, where such annealing conditions are insufficient to allow significant atomic diffusion. While confirming similar behavior in optimally Co-doped SrFe2As2 samples, the influence on Tc of strain induced by grinding to ~50 micron sized particles, followed by pressing the powder into a pellet using 10 kbar pressure, was found to increase the annealed transition width of 1.5 K by approximately a factor of ten. Also, the bulk discontinuity…
Applying an external pressure to indirectly electron-doped 122-type (Ba1-xLax)Fe2As2 epitaxial films enhances the superconducting critical temperature (Tc) up to 30.3 K. Different from the other family compounds, the Tc is enhanced not only in the under-doped region but also in the optimally doped and over-doped regions. Narrowing of the superconducting transition width and an increase in the carrier density take place simultaneously in the whole doping region, except at the heavily over-doped limit. This characteristic is unique to and observed only in (Ba1-xLax)Fe2As2, in which the La doping…
We report low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy studies of Ni-Bi films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Highly anisotropic and twofold symmetric superconducting gaps are revealed in two distinct composites, Bi-rich NiBi3 and near-equimolar NixBi, both sharing quasi-one-dimensional crystal structure. We further reveal axially elongated vortices in both phases, but Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon states solely within the vortex cores of NiBi3. Intriguingly, although the localized bound state splits energetically off at a finite distance ~10 nm away from a vortex center along t…
We have analysed optical reflectivity data for Ba_{1-x}K_xBiO_3 in the far-infrared region using Migdal-Eliashberg theory and found it inconsistent with standard electron-phonon coupling: Whereas the superconducting state data could be explained using moderate coupling, λ=0.7, the normal state properties indicate λ\le 0.2. We have found that such behaviour could be understood using a simple model consisting of weak standard electron-phonon coupling plus weak coupling to an unspecified high energy excitation near 0.4 eV. This model is found to be in general agreement with the reflectivity data,…
Thin films of $α$-MoGe show progressively reduced $T_{c}$'s as the thickness is decreased below 30 nm and the sheet resistance exceeds 100 $Ω/\Box$. We have performed far-infrared transmission and reflection measurements for a set of $α$-MoGe films to characterize this weakened superconducting state. Our results show the presence of an energy gap with ratio $2Δ_0/k_BT_{c} = 3.8 \pm 0.1$ in all films studied, slightly higher than the BCS value, even though the transition temperatures decrease significantly as film thickness is reduced. The material properties follow BCS-Eliashberg theory with a…
We report the detection of unusual superconductivity up to 49 K in single crystalline CaFe2As2 via electron-doping by partial replacement of Ca by rare-earth. The superconducting transition observed suggests the possible existence of two phases: one starting at ~ 49 K, which has a low critical field ~ 4 Oe, and the other at ~ 21 K, with a much higher critical field > 5 T. Our observations are in strong contrast to previous reports of doping or pressurizing layered compounds AeFe2As2 (or Ae122), where Ae = Ca, Sr or Ba. In Ae122, hole-doping has been previously observed to generate superconduct…
NaAlSi is a quasi-two-dimensional semimetal with superconductivity below Tc = 6.8 K and a band structure characterized by nodal lines near the Fermi level and potential topological surface states. Electrical resistivity measurements on its superconducting transitions in magnetic fields were made using plate-like single crystals. In the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram, we observed a substantial reduction in resistivity in a pre-transitional zone above the bulk superconducting regime only when the magnetic fields were perpendicular to the plane, rather than parallel to it. Significant s…
Based on the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we have investigated the mechanism of high $T_c$ superconductivity in stoichiometric LiFeAs. The calculated spectrum is in excellent agreement with the observed ARPES measurement. The Fermi surface (FS) nesting, which is predicted in the conventional density functional theory method, is suppressed due to the orbital-dependent correlation effect with the DMFT method. We have shown that such marginal breakdown of the FS nesting is an essential condition to the spin-fluctuation mediated supercon…
We report an unusual persistence of superconductivity against high magnetic fields in the iron chalcogenide film FeTe:O$_{x}$ below ~ 2.5 K. Instead of saturating like a mean-field behavior with a single order parameter, the measured low-temperature upper critical field increases progressively, suggesting a large supply of superconducting states accessible via magnetic field or low-energy thermal fluctuations. We demonstrate that superconducting states of finite momenta can be realized within the conventional theory, despite its questionable applicability. Our findings reveal a fundamental cha…
We present an analysis of the normal-state Hall effect and magnetoresistance in the heavy fermion superconductor CeIrIn${_5}$. It is demonstrated that the modified Kohler's scaling--which relates the magnetoresistance to the Hall angle--breaks down prior to the onset of superconductivity due to the presence of a precursor state to superconductivity in this system. A model-independent, single-parameter scaling of the Hall angle governed solely by this precursor state is observed. Neither the Hall coefficient nor the resistivity exhibit this scaling implying that this precursor state preferentia…
To understand the amazing variety of the superconducting states of Fe-based superconductors, we analyze the multiorbital Hubbard models for LaFeAsO and LiFeAs going beyond the random-phase approximation (RPA), by calculating the vertex correction (VC) and self-energy correction. Due to the spin+orbital mode coupling described by the VC, both orbital and spin fluctuations mutually develop, consistently with the experimental phase diagram with the orbital and magnetic orders. Due to both fluctuations, the s-wave gap function with sign-reversal ($s_{\pm}$-wave), without sign-reversal ($s_{++}$-wa…
Traces of superconductivity (SC) at elevated temperatures (up to 65 K) were observed by magnetic measurements in three different inhomogeneous sulfur doped amorphous carbon (a-C) systems: (a) in commercial and (b) synthesized powders and (c) in a-C thin films. (a) Studies performed on commercial (a-C) powder which contains 0.21% of sulfur, revealed traces of non-percolated superconducting phases below Tc = 65 K. The SC volume fraction is enhanced by the sulfur doping. (b) a-C powder obtained by pyrolytic decomposition of sucrose did not show any sign for SC above 5 K. This powder was mixed wit…
The observation of non-bulk superconductivity with an unexpectedly high onset transition temperature Tc up to ~ 49 K in non-superconducting single crystalline CaFe2As2 upon rare-earth doping has raised interesting questions concerning its origin. Several possibilities including interfacial mechanism have been proposed to account for the unusual observation. In an attempt to differentiate such propositions, we have carried out a systematic compositional and magnetic study on single crystals of nominal (Ca1-xPrx)Fe2As2 with 0 <= x <= 0.13 throughout the solubility range of Pr, which covers both …
The hybridization of magnetism and superconductivity has been an intriguing playground for correlated electron systems, hosting various novel physical phenomena. Usually, localized d- or f-electrons are central to magnetism. In this study, by placing a PTCDA (3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic dianhydride) molecular monolayer on ultra-thin Pb films, we built a hybrid magnetism/superconductivity (M/SC) system consisting of only sp electronic levels. The magnetic moments reside in the unpaired molecular orbital originating from interfacial charge-transfers. We reported distinctive tunneling spect…
