Thin films of $α$-MoGe show progressively reduced $T_{c}$'s as the thickness is decreased below 30 nm and the sheet resistance exceeds 100 $Ω/\Box$. We have performed far-infrared transmission and reflection measurements for a set of $α$-MoGe films to characterize this weakened superconducting state. Our results show the presence of an energy gap with ratio $2Δ_0/k_BT_{c} = 3.8 \pm 0.1$ in all films studied, slightly higher than the BCS value, even though the transition temperatures decrease significantly as film thickness is reduced. The material properties follow BCS-Eliashberg theory with a large residual scattering rate except that the coherence peak seen in the optical scattering rate is found to be strongly smeared out in the thinner superconducting samples. A peak in the optical mass renormalization at $2Δ_0$ is predicted and observed for the first time.
We studied the effect of magnetic doping with Gd atoms on the superconducting properties of amorphous Mo70Ge30 films. We observed that in uniform films deposited on amorphous Ge, the pair-breaking strength per impurity strongly decreases with film thickness initially and saturates at a finite value in films with thickness below the spin-orbit scattering length. The variation is likely caused by surface induced magnetic anisotropy and is consistent with the fermionic mechanism of superconductivity suppression. In thin films deposited on SiN the pair-breaking strength becomes zero. Possible reas…
Superconductivity in $\textit{a}$-MoGe thin films: effect of phase fluctuations with decreasing thickness and study of vortex dynamics in presence of low-frequency ac excitation
Properties of one-dimensional superconducting wires depend on physical processes with different characteristic lengths. To identify the process dominant in the critical regime we have studied trans- port properties of very narrow (9-20 nm) MoGe wires fabricated by advanced electron-beam lithography in wide range of lengths, 1-25 microns. We observed that the wires undergo a superconductor -insulator transition that is controlled by cross sectional area of a wire and possibly also by the thickness-to-width ratio. Mean-field critical temperature decreases exponentially with the inverse of the wi…
We investigate the evolution of superconductivity with decreasing film thickness in ultrathin amorphous MoGe (a-MoGe) films using a combination of sub-Kelvin scanning tunneling spectroscopy, magnetic penetration depth measurements and magneto-transport measurements. We observe that superconductivity is strongly affected by quantum and classical phase fluctuations for thickness below 5 nm. The superfluid density is strongly suppressed by quantum phase fluctuations at low temperatures and evolves towards a linear-T dependence at higher temperatures. This is associated with a rapid decrease in th…
In a sandwich consisting of two superconducting films, one weakly pinning and one strongly pinning, the vortex positions in both films are determined by the strongly pinning material and the vortex lattice is disordered in both films. We used (strongly pinning) NbN and (weakly pinning) MoGe and studied, by directly imaging the vortex core positions with a scanning tunnelling microscope, how this disorder is restored with increasing thickness of MoGe layer or when the interface is made insulating. For clean interfaces we find that the first reordering of the vortex lattice is found at a layer t…
In a Type II superconductor, the vortex core behaves like a normal metal. Consequently, the single-particle density of states in the vortex core of a conventional Type II superconductor remains either flat or (for very clean single crystals) exhibits a peak at zero bias due to the formation of Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon bound state inside the core. Here we report an unusual observation from scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements in a weakly pinned thin film of the conventional s-wave superconductor a-MoGe, namely, that a soft gap in the local density of states continues to exist even at t…
The work reported in my doctoral thesis is an experimental study of vortex dynamics and phase transitions in thin films of type II superconductors using scanning tunneling spectroscopy, low frequency ac susceptibility measurements and complimentary transport measurements. Chapter I and II cover basics of superconductivity and methodologies used in the thesis. Chapter III discusses the effect of periodic pinning centers on the geometry and dynamics of vortex lattice in NbN thin films. Consequent study of dynamic transition of vortex Mott-like to vortex metal-like state is described. In Chapter …
We report magneto-transport measurements on a superconducting molybdenum-germanium (MoGe) film of thickness $d$=50 nm in parallel magnetic fields and show evidence of a transition from a Meissner state to a resistive state of spontaneous perpendicular vortices generated by thermal fluctuations above a certain temperature $T>T_v(B)$. Here $T_v$ appears to match the vortex core explosion condition $d\approx 4.4ξ(T_v)$, where $ξ$ is the coherence length. For $T>T_v$, we observed that a nonlinear current-voltage ($IV$) response (Ohmic at low currents and the power law $V\propto I^β$ at higher $I$)…
NaAlSi is a quasi-two-dimensional semimetal with superconductivity below Tc = 6.8 K and a band structure characterized by nodal lines near the Fermi level and potential topological surface states. Electrical resistivity measurements on its superconducting transitions in magnetic fields were made using plate-like single crystals. In the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram, we observed a substantial reduction in resistivity in a pre-transitional zone above the bulk superconducting regime only when the magnetic fields were perpendicular to the plane, rather than parallel to it. Significant s…
It is well known that superconductivity in thin films is generally suppressed with decreasing thickness. This suppression is normally governed by either disorder-induced localization of Cooper pairs, weakening of Coulomb screening, or generation and unbinding of vortex-antivortex pairs as described by the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) theory. Defying general expectations, few-layer NbSe2 - an archetypal example of ultrathin superconductors - has been found to remain superconducting down to monolayer thickness. Here we report measurements of both the superconducting energy gap and criti…
The films of FeSe on substrates have attracted attention because of their unusually high-temperature (Tc) superconducting properties whose origins continue to be debated. To disentangle the competing effects of the substrate and interlayer and intralayer processes, we present here results of density functional theory (DFT)-based analysis of the electronic structure of unsupported FeSe films consisting of 1 to 5 layers (1L-5L). Furthermore, by solving the Bardeen-Schrieffer-Cooper (BCS) equation with spin-wave exchange attraction derived from the Hubbard model, we find the superconducting criti…
In this paper I show how to calculate the effect of a nearby Pearl vortex or antivortex upon the critical current $I_c(B)$ when a perpendicular magnetic induction $B$ is applied to a planar Josephson junction in a long, thin superconducting strip of width $W$ much less than the Pearl length $Λ= 2λ^2/d$, where $λ$ is the London penetration depth and $d$ is the thickness ($d < λ$). The theoretical results provide a qualitative explanation of unusual features recently observed experimentally by Golod {\it et al.}\cite{Golod10} in a device with a similar geometry.
We demonstrate that films of unconventional (d-wave) superconductor at temperatures $T\lesssim 0.43 T_c$ can exhibit unusual superconducting phases. The new ground states beside the broken gauge and the point group symmetries can spontaneously break (i) continuous translational symmetry and form periodic order parameter structures in the plane of the film, or (ii) time-reversal symmetry and develop supercurrent flowing along the film. These states are result of the strong transverse inhomogeniety present in films with thickness of several coherence lengths. We show a natural similarity between…
Proximity-induced superconductivity in a ferromagnet can induce Cooper pairs with a finite center-of-mass momentum. The resultant spatially modulated superconducting order parameter is able to stabilize Josephson junctions (JJs) with pi phase difference in superconductor-ferromagnet heterostructures and realize 'quiet' phase qubits. The emergence of two-dimensional (2D) layered superconducting and magnetic materials promises a new platform for realizing pi JJs with atomically sharp interfaces by van der Waals stacking. Here we demonstrate a thickness-driven 0-pi transition in JJs made of NbSe2…
Unusual transport properties of superconducting (SC) materials, such as the under doped cuprates, low dimensional superconductors in strong magnetic fields, and insulating films near the Insulator Superconductor Transition (IST), have been attributed to the formation of inhomogeneous phases. Difficulty correlating the behaviors with observations of the inhomogeneities make these connections uncertain. Of primary interest here are proposals that insulating films near the IST, which show an activated resistance and giant positive magnetoresistance, contain islands of Cooper Pairs (CPs). Here we …
We report on the emergence of two disconnected superconducting domes in alkali-metal potassium (K)-doped FeSe ultra-thin films grown on graphitized SiC(0001). The superconductivity exhibits hypersensitivity to K dosage in the lower-Tc dome, whereas in the heavily electron-doped higher-Tc dome it becomes spatially homogeneous and robust against disorder, supportive of a conventional Cooper-pairing mechanism. Furthermore, the heavily K-doped multilayer FeSe films all reveal a large superconducting gap of ~ 14 meV, irrespective of film thickness, verifying the higher-Tc superconductivity only in …
In the quest for exotic superconducting pairing states, the Rashba effect, which lifts the electron-spin degeneracy as a consequence of strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI) under broken inversion symmetry, has attracted considerable interest. Here, to introduce the Rashba effect into two-dimensional (2D) strongly correlated electron systems, we fabricate non-centrosymmetric (tricolor) superlattices composed of three kinds of $f$-electron compounds with atomic thickness; $d$-wave heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$ sandwiched by two different nonmagnetic metals, YbCoIn$_5$ and YbRhIn$_5$. We…
Superconductivity (SC) is one of the most intriguing physical phenomena in nature. Nucleation of SC has long been considered highly unfavorable if not impossible near ferromagnetism, in low dimensionality and, above all, out of non-superconductor. Here we report observation of SC with TC near 4 K in Ni/Bi bilayers that defies all known paradigms of superconductivity, where neither ferromagnetic Ni film nor rhombohedra Bi film is superconducting in isolation. This highly unusual SC is independent of the growth order (Ni/Bi or Bi/Ni), but highly sensitive to the constituent layer thicknesses. Mo…
We report enhanced superconductivity in bilayer thin films consisting of superconducting La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ with 0.06 $\leq x<$ 0.20 and metallic but non-superconducting La$_{1.55}$Sr$_{0.45}$CuO$_{4}$. These bilayers show a maximum increase in superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) of more than 200% for $x$ = 0.06 while no change in $T_c$ is observed for the bilayers with $x\geq$ 0.20. The analysis of the critical current and kinetic inductance data suggests 2-3 unit cells thick interfacial layer electronically perturbed to have a higher $T_c$. A simple charge tra…
We study the critical charge dynamics of the superconducting to the normal-state transition for LSCO thin films with a wide range of the Sr concentration, by measuring the frequency-dependent excess parts of the complex microwave conductivity, which is induced by the superconducting fluctuations. We present a dynamic scaling analysis of the complex fluctuation conductivity, which includes the information on the universality class and the dimensionality of the critical charge dynamics as a function of the Sr concentration, the film thickness and the magnetic field. In our previous study (H. Kit…
The distinctive features of equilibrium vortex structures in thin films of anisotropic superconductors in tilted magnetic fields are studied for the limits of moderate and strong anisotropy. The energetically favorable shape of isolated vortex lines is found in the framework of two particular models describing these limiting cases: London theory with an anisotropic mass tensor and London-type model for a stack of Josephson--decoupled superconducting layers. The increase of the field tilting is shown to result in qualitative changes in the vortex--vortex interaction potential: the balance betwe…
We report an {\it in-situ} scanning tunneling microscopy study of atomically thin films of CeCoIn$_5$, a $d$-wave heavy-fermion superconductor. Both hybridization and superconducting gaps are observed even in monolayer CeCoIn$_5$, providing direct evidence of superconductivity of heavy quasiparticles mediated by purely two-dimensional bosonic excitations. In these atomically thin films, $T_c$ is suppressed to nearly half of the bulk, but is similar to CeCoIn$_5$/YbCoIn$_5$ superlattices containing CeCoIn$_5$ layers with the same thickness as the thin films. Remarkably, the out-of-plane upper c…
A topological insulator (TI) interfaced with an s-wave superconductor has been predicted to host an unusual form of superconductivity known as topological superconductivity (TSC). Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) has been the primary approach in the scalable synthesis of the TI/superconductor heterostructures. Although the growth of epitaxial TI films on s-wave superconductors has been achieved, it remains an outstanding challenge for synthesizing atomically thin TI/superconductor heterostructures, which are critical for engineering the TSC phase. Here, we used MBE to grow Bi2Se3 films with the co…
